#Marowak

is it really true that all cubone wear the bones of their dead mother? do marowak just have an insanely high maternal mortality rate??? that can't be good for the survival of a species, can it?

it's more that, for a long time, we had some misunderstandings about marowak behavior. marowak are highly secretive about their birthing dens, so it's only been recently that we've learned what goes on postpartum in the wild!

marowak have very little role in raising their young, which become independent very quickly. a mother marowak will wean her cubones after about four days! after that, she leaves them to figure things out on their own. prior to whelping, she gathers up skulls from prey pokemon and lines her den with them. once she leaves her cubones, they wriggle their heads into the skulls for protection.

without being able to follow the birthing process, it was easy to assume that the mother was dying and the offspring were wearing her bones; this was further "confirmed" by cubone's plaintive cries. now we know that this is a way for cubone to communicate long-distance with each other, and that marowak generally survive the birthing process, but just aren't very active parents!
