🍿 Wilderness survives largely thanks to a mesmerising performance from Jenna Coleman - Basic Review 🍿
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
Creator (Platform): Marnie Dickens - based on the novel of the same name by B.E. Jones (Prime Video)
Publisher (Release): Amazon Studios (2023)
I'm just gonna kick off with Jenna Coleman deserves all the credit here. Wilderness (based on a book I didn't know about because I try not to unduly influence my opinion through prior research and am now giving up on the whole read-the-book-first mantra) is a haphazard collection of tropes that would've sunk the series if not for Coleman's exemplary performance as Liv Taylor.
So, what are these tropes? Well, there are a few, but primarily it's the source of the show that provides the most glaring: a hysterical woman makes hysterical choices after her one-dimensional husband cheats. The ensuing chaos is...underwhelming, with tension only really coming into play in the show's last two episodes. The road there likes to repeat itself and the consequence is a story that only sizzles and never pops.
However, Coleman inextricably pulls all the dangerously frail threads into a believable and riveting character arc. The cast does fine, but there's no real development set aside for them, so it's up to our main actress to do the heavy lifting and do the lifting she most definitely does. Able to sell any emotion, Coleman showcases the gentle's descent into madness, turning what could've been an overlong trudge into a trial of fire that births a psychologically complex character.

Writer: B.E. Jones (Novel), Marnie Dickens Director: So Yong Kim Stars: Jenna Coleman, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Ashley Benson, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Jake Anton. I’ve rarely seen a song representing a movie or a series as much as this one does. It’s a double-edged sword because on the one hand the song gives a clear idea of what the series is about but on the other it seems like a bit of a…

Staffel 1: (08/10) 2023-09-19, TV Amazon Prime Video

A great new interview with writer Marnie Dickens, director So Yong Kim, and executive producer Elizabeth Kilgariff about Wilderness!
“The way Jenna works, her process is to take you to the truth of what she’s thinking. She has to play multiple things at one time. People know different things, and that only gets more complicated as the series goes on. The aim of the show is to be heightened but with an emotional gut punch.”
Coleman was the “natural choice” to play Liv, Kilgarriff continues, describing her as an actor who can hold numerous layers of her character together at once – a trait viewers of The Cry will remember.
“I do think that is her genius,” the exec says. “She makes it look very easy – and she’s in nearly every scene in the show. We took her on a mad ride, she embraced it and is so good. I’m excited for the audience to see her in this role. We needed someone who is going to take the audience with her, to fall in love with her, and Oliver is brilliant as well. The two of them have fantastic chemistry on screen, which is really important for the story to work.”
“Jenna is amazing, she’s a master,” adds director So Yong Kim (Dr Death, In Between Days). “There were days, especially later in the schedule, when we’d be covering all six episodes, and she knew exactly where she was in episode four compared with episode two. It was so incredible. I don’t know how she kept track of that. Throughout 75 days of production, she only had one day when she was not needed. But even though it was so demanding for her, she could still be creative and allow her talent to come through.”

EXCLUSIVE: Jenna Coleman (The Serpent) and Oliver Jackson-Cohen (The Invisible Man) have been cast as co-leads of Amazon Original drama series, Wilderness, from Firebird Pictures. Filming begins this month in the U.S., Canada and UK, with the series launching on Prime Video next year in over 240 countries and territories.
Written and created by Marnie Dickens based on B.E. Jones’ novel of the same name, Wilderness revolves around British couple Liv (Coleman) and Will (Jackson-Cohen) who seem to have it all: a rock-solid marriage; a glamorous new life in New York thousands of miles from their provincial hometown; and still young enough to feel that their whole lives are ahead of them. Until Liv learns about Will’s affair. Heartbreak is swiftly followed by another emotion: fury. Revenge is her only option, and when Will proposes a trip around America’s epic National Parks to give their relationship a fresh start, Liv knows just how to get it…Wilderness is a twisted love story, where a dream holiday and a supposedly “happily-ever-after” quickly turns into a living nightmare.
Wilderness is directed and executive produced by So Yong Kim (Lovesong) and executive produced by Elizabeth Kilgarriff and Dickens and produced by Firebird Pictures.
“I’m very much looking forward to getting on the road, into the wilderness and the depths beyond,” said Coleman. “Working alongside Oliver, we will be exploring the boundaries of a relationship that is tested in unimaginable ways and in the hands of the wonderful So Yong Kim, Marnie Dickens and Liz Kilgarriff at Firebird Pictures. I know this is going to make for an extraordinary trip.”

so now we know why oliver and jenna followed each other a couple of weeks ago. it looks like they've already started working on it since that's a picture from set!
i've had a few people in my inbox guessing what project might've had ashley benson and eric balfour also following oliver and jenna, and oliver following them both in the last week. according to their instagrams, ashley and eric also are in canada working on something that also started shooting this week . . . it's too random so my best guess is that they are also in wilderness.
either way yay! more ollie content coming in the next year!
