England Return To Winning Ways In Helsinki
We look at this afternoon's UEFA Nations League game between Finland and England from the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki #NationsLeague #England #ThreeLions #FINENG
Goals from Jack Grealish, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Declan Rice saw England defeat Finland in the UEFA Nations League B at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki this afternoon despite Arttu Hoskonen’s goal in the final few minutes. Finland is buzzing following comments made by a foreign policy specialist about the need for reservists to be "physically and mentally fit."
Charly Salonius-Pasternak, a senior researcher at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs (FIIA), made the comments on Monday in regard to how a second Donald Trump presidency could change Russia's attitude towards Finland.
The Finnish Reservists' Association (FRA) told Helsingin Sanomat that their phone started ringing shortly after these comments, with people curious to decipher Salonius-Pasternak's message.
Salonius-Pasternak, however, said he did not consider it likely that Finland will face a military threat, just that it was possible.
Minna Nenonen, who heads the FRA, said keeping fit is always good idea.
"Moving more is not bad advice for anyone…I wouldn't be concerned at this point about Salonius-Pasternak's comment, as we all know from Trump's previous presidential term that unexpected things can happen," she said, noting that a second Trump presidency wouldn't necessarily be "too positive from a European or Finnish perspective."
Drinking the “Green Poison”
Grocery store chain, the S-group, has strengthened its number one market position in the grocery trade, leaving competitor K-market further behind.
Heikki Peltola, who compiled the Kaupan huiput 2022 (roughly translated as 'top shops') review, told Kauppalehti, "the S–group has had continued growth for a long time and last year was a historically good year."
The S-group is a customer-owned Finnish network of companies, comprising S-markets and Prisma in the food sector.
Back in 2000, K-Citymarkets, K-Supermarkets and K-Markets were the clear market leader, but S-stores have overtaken K-group stores, primarily due to Prisma's strong sales. In 2022, the S-markets and Prisma grabbed a total of 39.4 percent of market share, while the K-group saw 34.8 percent.
Historian Anitra Komulainen suggested the S-group's success is due to the bonuses offered to customers.
"The S card, which K-traders call green poison, attracted large families, who concentrate their purchases in cooperative stores in the hope of large bonuses."
The two chains, K and S, control around 80 percent of the Finnish grocery sector.
All I want for Christmas
Will this be another festive season of sticking a swab up your nose before sitting down to dinner? Ilta-Sanomat says no.
Markku Broas, an infectious diseases specialist at the Lapland hospital district, told the paper that it was not necessary to pre-emptively test unless getting together with unvaccinated elderly family members.
"If symptoms occur, testing is certainly recommended," he added, noting that Covid cases are especially hitting the elderly now, with the median age for Covid deaths being 85 in Finland.
"You can celebrate Christmas at home with your family, even if you have contracted an infection. But if there are unvaccinated individuals who are high-risk, then it's not sensible to be in the same household," Broas told IS.

to find the real phase I’d have to search 2.168,2 km away from here
back then-me really thought 2024 sarah will transform into siouxsie & vibe to falco, hell no, I’m sitting here listening to a local finnish theatre crew repeating the german translation of kaikki on hyvin for a thousand times including poor parody of aborigines sounds & the japanese noh theatre made by markku peltola
I predict miserable phases coming into my life in 2024 😶🌫️-

Bonus Features: The Match Factory Girl (1990)
Our current Movie of the Month, Aki Kaurismäki’s low-key revenge-thriller The Match Factory Girl, is whimsically bleak, a seemingly self-contradictory descriptor that’s somewhat unique to Finnish cinema. It’s patient, largely dialogue-free, and understated in its vintage beauty – like watching a Polaroid in motion. And yet, it’s often laugh-out-loud funny, specifically tuned in to the absurdist…

My fave film from Finland
Jadesoturi, eng. Jade Warrior (2006)
“Tao minulle Sampo niin saat rakkaasi takaisin.” eng. Forge me the Sampo and I’ll give you your loved one back
Jadesoturi is a film that binds together both elements of the Finnish national epic Kalevala and classic Chinese Wuxia-stories, being the first cinematic collaboration between the two countries. Kai is a heart-broken, lovelorn blacksmith living in a smithery in the solitude of a swamp with pictures of his ex-lover Ronja on the walls. Memories from a life he lived a thousand years ago in China re-appear promising to reunite the lovers if he makes the Sampo - the source of all riches and happiness created by the blacksmith Ilmarinen in Finnish folklore.
Languages: Finnish & Mandarine Chinese
Directed by: Antti-Jussi Annila
Main cast: Tommi Eronen (as Kai/Sintai), Markku Peltola (as Berg), Krista Kosonen (as Ronja) and Zhang Jingchu (as Pin Yu)
Music by: Samuli Kosminen (a percussionist) & Kimmo Pohjonen, who is a Finnish experimental avant garde accordionist. Pohjonen also worked on the theme song “Fate” with Finnish band Bleak and Swedish singer Ana Johnsson.
Awards: 2007 Jussi Awards [Finnish Oscars] for Best Costume Design to Anna Vilppunen and Best Cinematic Music to Kosminen & Pohjonen. “Fate” was also chosen as the best song of the Nordic countries 2007.
If you know Kalevala, you’ll get a lot more out of the symbolism in the movie (+the more times you watch it…). Even though the film didn’t get good reviews from Chinese audiences, the martial arts coreographies and cinematography are beautiful and the cast has a variety of well-known actors - some internationally and some domestically. Especially Markku Peltola (known from Aki Kaurismäki movie “Mies vailla menneisyyttä/A man without a past”) inspired Taiseng Cheng, a renowned wuxia actor and luckily also a Aki Kaurismäki-fan, to join the cast as well. Nowadays Krista Kosonen is a name every Finn knows and her work is largely admired. I don’t know what happened to Tommi Eronen but I just love him, his hair and him dipping his head into duck crap for the movie anyways. 💖🦆
In short, it’s a film unlike any other, at least I am yet to find to another even resemling it.

Since this is a fantasy project I'd like to see the entire cast of Jadesoturi reprise their roles in reverse, complete with Markku Peltola* as the Grumpy, Taciturn, Wise Old Master who nearly chases Hao Dang off his swampy porch into the woods when he comes begging guidance. Jingchu is the beautiful, put-together ex who broke his heart by not putting up with his wallowing forever. Krista is the woman who takes his muddy arse in from the freezing ditch and gets him on his feet and re-read meets him as a demigod later. Tommi becomes his Doofy Best Friend. There is a lot of singing. I love it.
(those of you moved to see the film I'm pulling this from, as of June 18, 2019, it appears to be free on a couple of legal ad-supported services per my cursory Google search above, it's a Chinese-Finnish fantasy collaboration based on the Kalevala and some essentially Chinese-Buddhist philosophy, it's beautiful on a micro-budget and dear to my heart, do go watch. *Markku Peltola -sadly now gone from this world - is a walking force of charisma and a glory.)
I keep thinking about that post about the whole genre of movies about a white guy getting into an asian philosophy, matrial art etc and then proceeding to surpass his teacher and be the best ever at it, and I started thinking about the opposite of it.
I want a movie about a chinese dude who comes to Finland, downs an entire bottle of Koskenkorva, tries to fight a nearby cow and ends up lying face down in a ditch while sobbing about his ex wife and having like 5 finnish dudes staring at him in awe like
“That’s him. That’s the chosen one.”
