The Swell Season – Radio City Music Hall – August 12, 2023

A pair of singing multi-instrumentalists, one Czech and one Irish — Markéta Irglová and Glen Hansard, respectively — teamed up nearly two decades ago to form the folk duo the Swell Season. They put out a pair of highly regarded albums and became known across the world when their song “Falling Slowly,” featured in the movie Once, won the Oscar for Best Original Song. The two eventually went their own way to do solo work but got back together in 2022 for several Swell Seasons shows to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Once, and things went so well that this year, they booked an August tour that brought them to Radio City Music Hall on Saturday night.

Renjuns presence is the epitome of comfort. His voice is so warm and his smile has healing properties. He never fails to be by your side. He’s the rock you always lean on and has been an irreplaceable part of your life. You try to reciprocate what he does for you in your own ways. Cooking him meals because he’s often too busy to make anything, little words/messages of encouragement when you can’t see him very often, etc.

You never want to pressure him into taking a break because he’s doing what he loves but when comes to your place looking drained, you knew he needed you.

Without saying a word you pull him into the warmth of your home and immediately drag him to your kitchen. No words are exchanged as you go to brew him some of his favorite tea before bringing him to your room. Not a single word is exchanged between the two of you as you lay there. The tea was soon finished and you both settled into each other’s embrace in the comfort of your bed.

The only sound in the room being your breathes as you lay with his head buried in your neck as your stroke his hair. It’s moments like these when you’re thankful for the bond you have. The warmth you feel from each other feels enough to warm you for an eternity, as if everything would be right in the world if you two stayed in this position.

You know you’d always be there for each other and you’d drop anything if he came running for you.

Jake had suffered enough. Stolen glances go unnoticed, light touches set him ablaze but seemingly no longer have any effect on her. He remembers the promises they whispered in the dark but always broken by the rising sun. Ironically that's when he felt the darkest.

The falling happened slowly, or he was slow to realize. It’s been too long, but he hopes there’s still time. He’s warred with himself long enough, and it’s time he won.

The room is crowded, but the eyes that know him better than anyone entice him closer. Her head shakes subtly, but he sees it—a silent request for him to keep his distance. 

His hope sinks, and he realizes he’s been too slow again. He’s been a fool. The handsome man beside her kisses her temple tenderly and takes her hand, holding it out to show their friends the diamond on her finger.

He can't go back, but to her, he's been erased.
