Also new to my life since I stopped using this blog is my love for Glen Hansard. In particular, his "Song of Good Hope" has helped me a lot through the more uncertain parts of the last 2-3 years of life.

I was just going back to February of 2022 (The Earthlings at Auditorium Theater, Chicago, IL) to find some up-close pictures of Eddie that I took, and I found the above video of Glen opening for The Earthlings.

This song is one that always stops me and grounds me. So much can happen in life and so much is out of my control. It helps to hear him sing:

"Take your time, babe. It's not as bad as it seems, you'll be fine, babe. There's just some rivers and streams in between you and where you want to be."

He makes it sound so simple, but when I listen to the song I believe it, you know?

The crazy thing was, after this song entered my life, Eddie and Glen started performing it together at Pearl Jam shows! Hearing Eddie sing those words made the song all the more powerful and healing (sort of like when Eddie sings that one lyric in "Falling Slowly", you know the one?).

The idea that Song of Good Hope meant a lot to both Eddie and myself was pretty cool on its own, but I never thought I'd get to know exactly what the song meant to Eddie and exactly when in his life he needed to listen to it.

Then Eddie shared this story at the Philly show, and I'll never forget it:

It’s amusing, really. Here I am, figuring out how to finish my Italian citizenship, so I can live in Ireland. I imagine my Irish and Italian ancestors, wherever they are, having a good, spirited tussle over it. In my 30s, I’ll spend my mornings with poetry and coffee, strong and clear. My afternoons, walking, searching for fairies and leprechauns, the myth, the magic of it all. And my evenings, slowly with whiskey, listening to the honest pitter-patter of rain out my window.
