Many COVID-19 variants have come and gone since the pandemic began, but some get more buzz than others. Now, there’s another new variant getting attention from the infectious disease community. It’s called XEC, and it’s currently spreading in Europe.

XEC is an Omicron variant that descended from subvariants KS.1.1 and FLiRT variant KP.3.3, according to Scripps Research’s Outbreak.info. XEC has several spike mutations, which is what the virus uses to infect you—and it might be more infectious that previous strains because of it.

So, will the new variant hit the U.S.? What symptoms should be on your radar? Here’s the deal.

Meet the experts: Amy Edwards, MD, associate professor at Case Western Reserve University and director of the Pediatric COVID Recovery Clinic at UH Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital; Mark Cameron, PhD, an associate professor in the Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Emily Smith, ScD, MPH, is an epidemiologist and an assistant professor at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health.

What symptoms should I watch for? XEC is a pretty new variant and, with that, there isn’t a ton of information right now on symptoms people have experienced with it. However, early reports don’t suggest that it causes dramatically different symptoms from other strains of COVID-19.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms may include:

Fever or chills

Cough

Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

Sore throat

Congestion or runny nose

New loss of taste or smell

Fatigue

Muscle or body aches

Headache

Nausea or vomiting

Diarrhea

When will the new variant hit the U.S.? While the XEC variant is getting a lot of attention in Europe, it’s already hit the U.S. As of Sept. 3, data show that there have been 23 cases of COVID-19 caused by the XEC variant in the U.S., with three happening in California.

The virus was first detected here on July 14, but hasn’t been detected since Aug. 16. That doesn’t mean it’s no longer here, though. Because so many people do home tests (or don’t test at all) when they have symptoms of COVID-19, it can be tricky to get information on different strains of COVID-19.

Will it become the dominant COVID variant? That’s not clear. As of this second, XEC isn’t even a blip on the CDC’s radar. The CDC’s variant surveillance system shows that KP.3.1.1 is the dominant strain in the U.S., followed by KP.2.3, and LB.1. XEC isn’t even listed on the surveillance.

That doesn’t mean it won’t spread, though.

“Just like JN.1 emerged from BA.2.86 late last year to drive new COVID infections through last fall and winter, XEC may have similar potential,” says Mark Cameron, PhD, an associate professor in the Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. “But we need to know more about the XEC variant and perhaps those still to come.”

But lately we’ve seen several variants circulate heavily at the same time, points out Amy Edwards, MD, associate professor at Case Western Reserve University and director of the Pediatric COVID Recovery Clinic at UH Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. “Dominant is a strong word,” she says. “With so many very contagious variants, I think the days of having one dominant variant is gone.”

How can I protect myself? The CDC currently recommends that everyone aged 6 months and up get the updated COVID-19 vaccine, making that a good place to start. “As yet another Omicron family member, being up to date on the latest COVID-19 booster is a protective measure we can take right now,” Cameron says.

"The main thing we can do to slow a new variant or new wave is to get our booster shots this fall," says Emily Smith, ScD, MPH, an epidemiologist and an assistant professor at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health. "Generally, we find the boosters give us broad protection, even against new variants."

It’s also a good idea to wear a mask in crowded indoor areas when levels of COVID-19 are high in your area, especially if you’re consider high risk for complications of the virus. And, of course, if you develop symptoms of the virus, it’s a good idea to test yourself to see if you have the virus so you can lower the odds you’ll spread it to others.

If you do, in fact, have COVID-19 and are considered high risk for serious complications from the virus, you may want to contact your primary care physician about taking an antiviral medication like Paxlovid.

I’m not an old player in FR by any means (joined in 2017), but I hate how passive aggressive people get on the onsite forums when you say that the “economy” shouldn’t cater to the 1% of FR players that have Light Sprites and the ones who can afford them. They call you all sorts of things, like being lazy, greedy, and childish.

Like, sorry? I have a life outside of this dragon pixel game, and spending my limited time on this earth grinding out for a familiar is apparently worth it because some jerk thought it’d be funny to mark it up to 190k gems was funny, is not my thing.

Personally I wish the staff would just buck up and rerelease everything that was retired. Yes, I do mean everything. Making money on the site was never hard, and the people hoarding Light Sprites, Imp Scrolls, etc. do not matter more than the rest of the players.

Oh, yeah. The passive aggressive behavior is atrocious, but I prefer it greatly to what happened to me otherwise. I'd rather someone just call me greedy or entitled to my face than to go out of their way to make Flight Rising unplayable for me.

The thing that gets me is that back then, even though I wasn't always as polite as I could have been, I was always trying to make room for the argument against crashing the market...but these days I actively don't even care. After 2 years of harassment and watching those prices continue to inflate, I'm firmly in the camp of "Fuck it, nuke that part of the economy".

I can still understand not releasing the KS stuff, even if I disagree, but any of the Festival stuff? Nope. Give it out. Put all the Sprites in a Galore delivery. Fuck it. FUCK IT. Fun gameplay over protecting an inaccessible section of the "economy", always and forever.

Tried something different with my style- the shading leaves much to be desired but it's not the worst thing in the world, so I'll take it

First off - YES, he does have mandibles. I just didn't feel like drawing them.

Second, YES, he does have the front fins (the leg looking thingies) - they are on his hips. Again, I didn't feel like drawing them.

So, reaper leviathan. A notoriously horrifying and deadly creature in Subnautica. The destroy all vehicles, they destroy you, and don't hesitate to fight any surrounding fish.

Why the fuck ks Jeremy one when he's

A) Not a fighter

B) Passive

C) Too scared to actually fight anyone

The answer is simple:

His dad is a reaper. His dad is, in canon, a very fucked up individual. I don't want to spoil all of my canon lore just yet, but trust me when I say his dad is fucked.

In my mind (amd my friend's), Reapers are super introverted creatures. They mate every once in a while, usually a different partner, and one parent raises the kid. When the kid's an adult, they have to fight their parent for freedom to prove they're strong enough to survive on their own. This results in many injuries and, sometimes, death.

However.

Jeremy did not win that fight. He was even sustained permanent injuries and scars. He is, as you may guess, blind.

(In my canon, since Jeremy is usually depicted without eyes and just a question mark, I thought it'd be interesting if he was blind. This comes up a LOT in canon.)

At some point he escapes the Mountains, having been shamed for losing against his father and wanting to "start over" - see, even if Reapers are a reclusive species, they're still a community.

Now he chills by himself in the Dunes, away from most other fish and sustaining for himself.

Don't underestimate him just because he's blind and more passive than your average reaper. He can very much destroy any of your vehicles, attack large fish, and can navigate much better than you'd think a blind reaper could. He can hear especially well, and echolocation does have a role in it.

Jeremy is also , uh... Big. Like. Very big. Mostly long - but he's bigger than all of the human crew and Vincent (who is a lovely Warper, but that's for another time).

DAWN’S BETA IS OUT!

I’ve been writing and refining this for at least 3 years now, and I intend for this to be the final major update before releasing the game in full. I’ve got a ton of things to say about this update but if you just want a link to the game it'll be below.

For those who know nothing about it: DAWN is a Battle Shonen (a subgenre of anime and manga) inspired tactical TTRPG that I’ve been developing since I started my last major release (Star And City 2E).

I consider it the result of everything I’ve learned with writing and game design, it has the most collaborators I’ve had on any project, and it’s a product I’m incredibly proud of. Also, its precursor, Advent Dawn, was the first game I ever posted on Itch.

I want to note that this version is in no way complete, and should be read as such. There's the obvious missing art and text to start (which I’ve marked with a WIP image).

This version will likely have issues, as this is the first time this version has been shown publicly. Despite this, I’ve done as much as I can with my limited testing, I feel the book is a presentable and enjoyable product for any who’re interested in it.

I’ve also started a Itch funding tracker that’ll be active for the first 2 weeks because this update is a big deal to me and I want to see how much support I can get for the final release. I appreciate any support you give because of it, but don’t feel pressured to.

You may know I already ran a Kickstarter campaign for DAWN, this is why I haven’t set up any rewards for this itch funding, as I feel it would devalue the support I got on that initial KS, I just like to see numbers go up.
