We're talking all things Steven Universe on You Are What You Love!
Tumblr media
Mei Rothschild (@speremint), creator of the Webtoon original "Brimstones and Roses," joins You Are What You Love to discus the animated classic, Steven Universe.
We talk about how the show took steps for diversity on screen, how Steven's exploration of his own heritage represented a diasporic experience, and how the show broke ground in both style and subject matter. Tangents include how diverse media is held to an almost impossible standard, why adults aren't allowed to enjoy things for the sake of enjoying them, and the constant embarrassment of being alive.
Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts!

hi hello me and a 3x Emmy nominated writer spent two hours talking about this
here are some highlights:
Edward Cullen can be read as a version of female rage, and is more representative of the teenage girl experience than Bella. For us, that might be why we romanticized him
Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were in fact incredible actors: they were doing exactly what was on the page.
The lack of sex was sex in itself, and was an important first step in understanding sexuality (first, you understand longing and lust and why you're having those feelings, and it's a step a lot of teen media skipped at that time, which made it hard to relate to shows like Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill)
We talked about this and so much more if you want to give it a listen!
Part 1 on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and all podcast players.

In the first episode of You Are What You Love Marissa Tandon and Lauren Grace Thompson explain that the reason young women love Dean Winchester is because they identify not with the successful, emotionally intelligent women they see in media, but with the emotionally challenged fuckups represented in media, who are generally men.
To complete the fandom cycle:
I, who falls into almost the exact same demographic as Kat from That Vampire Show (created by Marissa as an exploration of fandom), find Warren to be a more interesting character.
Why? Because Kat’s angst hits too close to home. I can’t enjoy angst about college applications and parental expectations, because I’m neck deep in that hellhole IRL. But Warren? A guy who at his best sucks, who’s ruined his best relationships for his career, and who is probably about to commit copyright offences on AO3. That has nothing to do with me. That’s angst that feels good to consume.
I’m feeling brave, so @tandonshows, bracing for impact, and I hope this goes down better than Kat’s attempt at communicating with the creator of her favourite media.

Meet Harrison Banks, our resident intern / super-obsessed blogger. Her super power? Never knowing how to shut her mouth. Our character designer brought so much personality out of Harrison, but my favorite detail is her small Semicolon Project tattoo on her ankle. The semicolon project highlights the idea that an author could have ended a sentence, but chose to continue. Harrison, to me, is that audience entry point to something big. She digs into Anika’s story so much because of her own anxiety, and this feeling that someone that struggles with panic attacks, someone like her, could have insane super powers. Harrison’s obsession with Anika’s story is, in part, an obsession with her own. You can meet Harrison by listening to all three seasons of our show now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or at superordinarypod.com

For the second week in a row, we saw Max Verstappen take pole, Checo take second, and a Ferrari on third. But the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix brought the second appendicitis in recent F1 history, and a new hero to the grid: 18 year old Ollie Bearman. Join me and fellow motorsports content creator James Coker (@thisjamescoker) as we break down the good, the bad, and the ugly from the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix on Grid Chat!

That Vampire Show, our fiction podcast about fandom, turned 1 year old this week!
Hey Everyone! Our fiction podcast, That Vampire Show, turned one this week. Season 1 follows Kat Wright, a high school senior who is obsessed with the hit TV show, “Bloodlines.” After winning a fan fiction writing contest for the show, Kat is given the chance to visit set and meet the cast and crew. When the trip doesn’t go as planned — and she and the creator of the show, Warren Young, have a major fight — Kat’s life and the future of “Bloodlines” both spiral out of control.
Season 1 was 10 full length episodes, and 8 mini episodes that explored the world of "Bloodlines," the vampire hunter teen TV show within our podcast. Season 1 was written by me (Marissa Tandon @marissakumari, creator of Super Ordinary and The Sword & The Stoner), Gabriel Urbina (Wolf359), Alex Whisenhunt (His Royal Fakin' Highness, Life on Pause) and Cassidy Lu Jones. Season 2 is heading into production this month (we're currently casting for a few new roles) and a new writer, Berklie Novak-Stolz (who you may know here as @icaruspendragon) joined us for the writers room.
That Vampire Show is a love letter to fandom and creatives alike, and we had such a fun time making the show, and are so excited to bring season 2 to everyone!
If you're new to us and into the power point kind of thing, here's our quick starter guide to the show:

You can listen to the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts (podlink here for all platform links!) Or, press play / follow on the embed of the first episode below. If you're into it, let us know with a reblog/ask/review, and subscribe for season 2!

Hey! If you're looking for queer podcasts from black creators - a great place to start is Tandon productions. Marissa Tandon is a black woman who's made a bunch of shows - in particular Super Ordinary, which I'm pretty sure has a couple of queer characters. Also check out Jordan Cobb's work - she's a black woman who made Here Be Dragons, which has a bunch of queer characters. (1/2)
sOther audio dramas made by black people and featuring majority black casts include Fan Wars by Shenee Howard, Sumeria by Mark Luckie, Vega by Ivuoma Okoro, Deadbeats Inc by Aisha Casey, Bronzeville and Harlem Queen - though I'm not sure about queer rep. Shows made by mixed crews with black queer characters include Unwell (Lily is a queer black woman), Forest 404, The Lavender Ladies podcast, Kalila Stormfire and Masala Jones (2/2 - but sorry, there's more)
Punishment Island is made in Uganda and stars a queer black woman. The Van is engineered by Rye Dorsey, who is a black person, and features a bunch of queer characters. When Angels Visit Armadillo is made by a mixed crew and features a black lesbian character. Ok, I think that's everything I know!! Radio Elusia also has a mixed crew and black director, but I don't know if it'll feature queer characters (3/3)
Thanks so much! This is a great bunch to look at. Fan Wars can confirm no queer rep but it’s a very fun story. If you’re Star Wars Fan and have spent time in fanspheres it’s really worth a listen.
@mistah-aluminum and @cactusjuicepod also suggested the list put out by the folks at Death By Dying which isn’t exclusively queer but has some really good ones and overlaps with @lesetoilesfous suggestions. Find that here.
@bi-blue suggested Caravan, which has a creator of colour as the lead writer/director/producer and a whole cast of indigenous, black, people of colour working on the project. I love Caravan it’s a really fun story. A queer Western meets Dante’s inferno.
In a reblog on the original post @chekhovs-harpoon had some really good suggestions too I’m gonna add here as well:
Have you heard of the RedWing Audio Drama? I can best describe it as queer black batman. Main character is a queer black man, by day he’s an uber rich philantropist, by night he’s a masked superhero. This podcast is fun cuz it’s got all the wish fulfillment/power fantasy tropes that’s usually aimed at a white cishet able bodied men, but this one’s aimed at the more marginalized people, queer people of color especially.
I can also recommend the Fuck Humans Podcast. Which is about a post-apocalyptic sci-fi fantasy world where humans and monsters live, and any relations between them are forbidden by law. And the story is about how love overcomes hatred and prejudice (and also hot monster fucker porn with plot and  feelings. be aware that this is an erotica podcast so the sex scenes are very graphic and that’s the selling point)
I also really love The Glass Appeal. It’s the future but many people are dying from diseases we’ve already cured because of capitalism. So a rogue group of cyberneticists are going around trying to start the solarpunk revolution by teaching people how to take care of themselves. but they’ve been framed by the big companies for bioterrorism and our main character was sent to jail and it’s up to his husband to prove his innocence. Despite the harsh conditions, this show feels really hopeful and the married couple dynamic of the main characters is the sweetest thing
Those are the shows i’d recommend at the top my head, but i’ve got more i just can’t remember them rn cuz i’m subscribed to literally 300 shows at this point. my dms are always open for talking about and recommending podcasts!”
Thank you so much to everyone who made suggestions. All over these sound so cool. I hope that helps out @marvel-magnet1! I know I have a whole lot of new stuff on my own to listen list.

Here’s the thing: your existence is no more miraculous than that of anyone you’ve ever met. You are the same combination of late night bad decisions and one too many drinks as the kid who tortured you in middle school. Sure, there’s a few people out there that will accomplish greatness, but for there to be any measure of extraordinary, most everybody has to be ordinary. It’s something no one ever gets: statistically, you’re doomed to be an anonymous part of the majority, so that the world may measure excellence by the sheer fact that it is more than you have accomplished.
And yet, we’re a species obsessed with the notion that we came from stardust. We seem to forget that if I’m stardust, then so are you, and the guy next to you, and the guy next to him. And if we’re all stardust, what makes my twinkle any brighter than yours?
Think about it: you grow up hearing, “you’re going to do something special, and we’re going to be so proud of you.” And every day, your head hits the pillow, and you haven’t managed much of anything. So you think, are they proud of me? Are they proud that I managed a B, or do they think I’m not living up to my potential? I could have married someone else, I could have gone to a better college. But my kids will do well, and they’ll be extraordinary. Because I couldn’t be.
It’s this vicious cycle that could be broken if we’d just tell kids the truth: the world doesn’t give a shit about you. You were probably born to be ordinary. No one is waiting on you. What lays ahead is a dead end desk job where you’ll meet a nice man or woman, give up your ambitions to settle down. You’ll marry, pop out 2.5 kids and you’ll fight about money and divorce will always be on the horizon. You will not do anything groundbreaking, you will not change the world, you will not leave your mark. And that’s a lot easier to live up to.

thinking a LOT about Dean Winchester and how hard it is for him to talk about his feelings (fears included) after I spent an hour and a half with Lauren talking about how much Supernatural affected us growing up on You Are What You Love.
We talked about so much, but one thing we dug into is why teenage girls connect to characters like Dean Winchester. Both myself and Lauren found ourselves connecting with the emotionally unavailable male characters, rather than the emotionally intelligent female characters. We thought it had something to do with how Dean in particular expresses (or rather, doesn't express) himself. Lauren brought up the idea that it's more than just not wanting to talk about your feelings -- it's this character who seems almost embarrassed and ashamed to have feelings at all.
When you're a teenage girl -- or heck, still now in our twenties -- we talked about how that feels way more relatable than being able to confidently walk into a room and express ourselves. There's something about wanting to go to such extreme lengths (say like, hunting demons with your baby brother) to avoid talking about how you're feeling -- feeling like you operate in a world where everything else is more important than what's going on with you, that felt more relatable growing up.
We also dug into the older sibling syndrome, and what connects Supernatural, Doctor Who, and Sherlock (do we dare say the compound fandom word that still haunts all our nightmares?), and how much we miss fandom existing when shows were on the bubble and aired weekly. You can dig into the whole conversation by listening here.
