"Sit down!"

She said he looked very nice on TV, "but your sister"-Timothée's date-"your sister looked gorgeous! I told your mother, more beautiful than all those movie stars! The second season of television super-producer Ryan Murphy’s social-politics-minded true crime anthology series is neither as spectacularly star-studded or thematically wide-ranging as the first season, the Emmy-winning The People vs. O.J. Simpson. But The Assassination of Gianni Versace, written entirely by Tom Rob Smith (Maggie Cohn has a co-writer credit on the penultimate episode) with a premiere episode directed by Murphy, is a more focused and reflectively dichotomous work. Becoming ever-more intensely about the fascinatingly troubled young man who killed the famed Italian fashion designer in Miami in 1997 (and at least four other men as well), this American Crime Story is an absorbing, shocking, and nuanced meditation on the social and psychological costs of closeted homosexuality and the nature of capitalist success, on the image we wear like a mask and project to the world and the true, less presentable self that we can never really disguise.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace opens with its titular murder and tracks back to explore the path that led killer Andrew Cunanan (played by Darren Criss, in the season’s star-turn standout performance) to take the life of Versace (Édgar Ramírez), It also considers key moments in that life (often employed as sharply mirroring contrasts to Cunanan’s degenerating life and choices), as well as the grief-stricken tug-of-war over his memory and legacy after his death between his sister and design partner Donatella (Penélope Cruz) and his lover and life partner Antonio D’Amico (Ricky Martin; yes, that Ricky Martin, and he’s good, too). For a viewer unfamiliar with the details of Versace’s life and of the background of his killer, the narrative is full of surprises and revelations, illustrating details and remarkable visual metaphors. It will also work quite hard in its lesser moments to make you care about and believe in fashion design as a vibrant and meaningful art form. Unless you’re already of such a mind, you will leave unconvinced.

But after an establishing episode or two (the manhunt for Versace’s killer is teased in the opening episode and then deferred until the closing hour), the show really becomes The Disturbing Adventures of Andrew Cunanan. The central serial killer is a charming and fairly open homosexual, a sociopathic, self-aggrandizing pathological liar, and given more defined psychological contours as his narrative arc fills in innovatively backwards. He is forever making ambitious plans that he does not work hard enough to achieve, lavishly spending money he has not earned, seeking to impress others with fancifully exaggerated tales about his connections to wealth and fame, and bouncing between secretly-gay wealthy sugar daddies and potential younger paramours. A cossetted golden child of his Fillipino father (Jon Jon Briones), who flees the United States ahead of federal charges of embezzlement and leaves his abused wife (Joanna P. Adler) and the spoiled Andrew to fend for themselves, Andrew runs in gay community circles in his native San Diego and San Francisco, eventually drifts towards drug abuse and prostitution, and is exposed and rejected by several friends and lovers in quick succession, triggering the murder spree that ends with Versace.

Cunanan’s fractured, manipulative, sociopathic psyche is repeatedly contrasted with the varied group of gay men whom he meets, befriends, and, in many cases, kills, through whom The Assassination of Gianni Versace provides a notably multifaceted view of the experience of being gay in America in the still-unaccepting 1990s. Versace himself came out publically in an interview with The Advocate in 1995, despite the concerns of his sister; after his death, the deep grief of his partner D’Amico (Martin himself came out a few years ago, at age 39) is exacerbated by being denied any acknowledgement of their relationship or compensation for the loss by the Versace family and business, a common experience for same-sex partners without legal union rights.

Cunanan’s other lovers, acquaintances, and victims reflect other facets of the homosexual experience: Lee Miglin (Mike Farrell) is a Chicago real estate developer with a public marriage to infomercial perfume hawker Marilyn Miglin (a formidable Judith Light) and private secrets; Norman Blachford (Michael Nouri) is another wealthy older man who takes on Cunanan as a live-in lover/style consultant/assistant, but sees more readily through his web of lies; David Madson (Cody Fern) is a small-town Midwesterner who comes out to his traditionally conservative father in a scene that doesn’t entirely follow any predictable script; and the perspective of Jeff Trail (Finn Wittrock), a closeted Navy officer, provides a sharply political commentary on homophobia in the U.S. military and the contemporaneous bureaucratic injustice of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (which was only actually suspended in 2011).

But Andrew Cunanan himself, as characterized in Criss’s tremendous performance, is the key carrier of The Assassination of Gianni Versace‘s thematic meanings concerning the fraught performativity of identity in American capitalism. Andrew is not closeted like most of those other gay men, but he is nonetheless hiding his true self and projecting a falsified, grandiose image for the world. His father taught him to perform success at all times, even if it actually eludes him. Once he begins killing, Cunanan of course hides his murderous, monstrous nature from the world to remain at large. But he is always wearing a mask even before that, playing the role of a charming, worldly, confidently interesting young man with illustrious connections and swaths of wealth and privilege when the real Andrew Cunanan, at his core, is financially precarious, increasingly desperate, and inherently insecure, forever seeking love from others but cripplingly incapable of feeling it in return. Like all confidence men, there is a confidence-shaped hole at his centre.

Ever in contrast to the daring, visionary designer Gianni Versace, who poured his sensibility into his clothing, Andrew Cunanan dons outfits with handsome swagger but never can inhabit them, never seems at home in his own skin. The Assassination of Gianni Versace‘s brilliant leap is to delve more deeply and even encourage a perverse identification with the serial killer Cunanan rather than its titular figure, and to suggest that his obsession with surface appearance and his related disconnect from the truths of his own existence constitutes a typically American quagmire of identity formation, reflecting the dilemmas of our own time as well as of those of 20 years ago.

How MacArthur ‘genius’ Lynda Barry is exploring brain creativity with true artists: Preschoolers

As an associate professor of interdisciplinary creativity at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Barry is pushing the envelope on understanding how the brain creates and responds to words and pictures — a scholarly envelope that, in her mind, should be positively covered with illuminating doodles.

As part of her mission, Barry thinks preschoolers hold many secrets to creativity, before education and social expectations have trained their natural artistry out of them. Now, buoyed by the MacArthur windfall, Barry can plunge into this subject area more deeply.

“That’s something I’d like to do — to get literally on the floor with these 4-year-olds and spend a year at least just figuring out: What happens before writing and drawing split, and why did we split those things — and what happens when we do split them?” Barry said by phone while on tour for her new educational graphical book “Making Comics.” The book shares creativity exercises from her popular classes and workshops, which span campuses to prisons.

“The arts has a critical function for kids,” writes Barry, noting that we draw and act and sing and build things before anyone teaches us how to do so. “Everything we have come to call the arts,” she adds, “seems to be in almost every 3-year-old.”

Barry, who has already spent time observing pre-K classes on her Madison campus, isn’t looking to teach toddlers, but rather she thinks that researching their creative integration can benefit adults, who easily become too rigid, stratified and self-critical in their thinking. And one path back to unguarded creativity is making images without judgment or fear.

“The educational system really sees these things — words and pictures — as different,” Barry said. “And then the sad part is that writing becomes typing rather than using your hand.”

In “Making Comics,” Barry shares such classroom-tested exercises as “tandem drawing,” in which two people must each simultaneously draw one half of a picture, or closed-eye drawing, in which you have one minute to draw breakfast, or perhaps a mermaid, with only visualization sparking the mind. “They open their eyes a minute later and they’re always really happy. It’s not that the drawings are always that great, but something happened there,” Barry said. “They closed their eyes and saw something.”

Barry’s techniques — some of which she shared in a previous book, “Syllabus” — have helped non-artists and acclaimed cartoonists alike in becoming creatively unstuck and inspired.

“Most people stop drawing when they reach the age of 8 or so, because they couldn’t draw a nose or hands,” said Barry, 63. “The beautiful thing is that their drawing style is intact from that time. Those people, if you can get them past being freaked out, have the most interesting lines — and have a faster trajectory to making really original comics than people who have been drawing for a long, long time.”

Barry’s image-making exercises helped spur one of her graduate students, Ebony Flowers, to pursue art. Flowers recently published her first graphic novel, “Hot Comb.”

Together, Flowers and Barry are also working on a program called Drawbridge that pairs up grad students and preschoolers as “co-researchers.” Flowers said she is moved by Barry’s approach to teaching.

“Lynda has a knack for creating learning opportunities that push the boundaries of experimentation,” Flowers said. “This is why she participates in many different imaginative spaces and contributes valuably to what happens there. She works alongside leading scientists, facilitates lively workshops about art and literacy, and loves to draw with preschoolers.”

“I’ve collaborated with her during these and other projects,” the young artist continued, “and it’s always amazing to witness her profound and authentic curiosity.”

Barry created alt-weekly comics for decades, including the long-running strip “Ernie Pook’s Comeek,” before deciding to pursue a teaching career in a formal setting. What she learned while attending the Evergreen State College in Washington in the ’70s, especially from one teacher, Marilyn Frasca, continues to fuel her educational curiosity today about the power of image-making — a well of inspiration that never runs dry.

Barry combines such intellectual questing with an infectious spirit and lively sense of humor. One of her Evergreen classmates and longtime friends, “Simpsons” creator Matt Groening, was drawn to her unique presence from Day 1.

“Lynda can take the unlikeliest situation and amp it for everyone around her,” said Groening, who did a public talk with her in Los Angeles during the current tour. “I’ve seen her bring a stodgy outdoor wedding to life by getting the whole party, including the cranky sourpusses in the corner, to join a 50-yard-long conga line. I’ve seen her get a standing ovation in a crowded theater by singing with her mouth closed. And I’ve seen her belt out a song so sexily at a Japanese bar that they unplugged the karaoke machine.”

In Groening’s eyes, “Lynda is a joy to behold, and she makes it safe for anyone to join in her happiness — except the manager of the Japanese restaurant.”

Barry had a hard blue-collar upbringing in Seattle, and her parents, of Irish, Filipino and Norwegian descent, divorced during her middle-school years. She was drawn to warm comics that depicted family stability, such as “Family Circus,” as well as the kinetic line quality of some underground “comix” artists.

Barry herself creates comics and graphic novels, such as “One! Hundred! Demons!,” that contain brutally honest autobiographical elements. And her busy lines — once criticized as looking unschooled, she has said — now win major awards, including an Eisner Hall of Fame induction, for their idiosyncratic greatness.

And that pursuit of the most “alive” line — what she sees in the organic work of small children — infuses most everything she draws, teaches and tries to instill in others as they make their own creative discoveries.

“If you have fond memories of that one special teacher who noticed something promising about you, who encouraged you to take chances and be yourself, who took exuberant delight in your creativity, you can have that experience again with Lynda Barry,” Groening said.

And now, armed with the MacArthur money while on sabbatical, Barry is free to pursue so much educationally without distraction. “It is really overwhelming, just beautiful, like somebody handing you five years of life and saying: ‘Look here, what do you want to do?’ ” she said.

So now she can sit with the kids and, right beside the grad students, try to understand the brain on creativity.

“I know that there’s something big there,” Barry said with a laugh. “And to be able to have time to really research it makes me so happy.”

Sanctions on Iran: International Court of Justice rules against US

Siding with Tehran, it said exports of "humanitarian" goods, such as food and medicines, should be allowed.

The US argued the court had no jurisdiction in the case as it concerned its national security.

The rulings of the ICJ - which is based in The Hague - are binding but the court has no power to enforce them.

Refugees, Immigration, Cultural Diversity and the fact-free forty-five

As the United States spirals into disarray, isolationism and intolerance and 45 refuses to denounce white supremacy and antisemitism, some without the proper protections are beating it to the nearest border to get out before an unknown and arbitrary ax falls. The unpredictability and turbulent orders of 45 and his cohort are creating chaos in people’s lives. Forty five and co. have stooped so low as to espouse easily disprovable falsehoods, citing terrorist acts that are pure fictions, as they simultaneously wage a war of words against the media. All this to defend policies that have no foundation in the real world. Refugees are not responsible for terrorism or crime, neither in the US nor in Canada. Some public intellectuals read this egregious assault on civil rights - communities attacked in the wee hours of the morning by a militarized ICE - as evidence of the emergence of a new totalitarianism - from Arun Gupta to Chris Hedges, Noam Chomsky and Naomi Klein. This author views it as the war brought home.

Forty-five bases his new immigration policy on ill-conceived notions of Judeo-Christian and white supremacy, citing a degeneration of American capitalist culture caused by a surplus of “illegal immigrants” in the territorial US - rather than the neoliberal and neoconservative ideologies and political practices of the last three decades. By scapegoating immigrants, he deflects self-conscious national introspection that could possibly lead to a real political revolution of the kind advocated by political thinkers like Michael Moore and Bernie Sanders. And in so doing, 45 willfully diminishes the contributions of Latin Americans and Muslims to the US economy, not to mention their contributions to the fabric of its material, culinary and artistic cultures.

This author believes that that a peaceful and equitable intersectionality of cultures produces history’s most vibrant flourishing of creativity, scientific advancement and economic growth. Exchanges of ideas, products and cultural practices enrich rather than threaten the integrity of cultures, so long as there exists a “constant engineering, vigilance and active participation” of members of the differing cultural groups. Peaceful coexistence and cultural flourishing are not absent from the historical record. Tenth century Spain enjoyed prodigious scientific, intellectual and cultural advancement as a multicultural society under the stewardship of Muslim leader, Abd al-Rahman, III and Jewish vizier, Hasdai ibn Shaprut. Together they created an unprecedented collaboration in the creation of an educational infrastructure and scholarly exchange that would later become the foundation of the European Renaissance. “Abd al-Rahman III based his rule on the collaboration of various national/ethnic/religious groups within his kingdom: Arabs, Berbers, Jews, and Christian descendents of the Iberio-Hispanic population. In ninth century Bagdad, intellectual, scientific and mathematical evolution flourished under the rule of Prince Ma'mūn, who oversaw a pluralistic society of Muslims, Christians, Persians and Jews. His devotion to learning and cultural pluralism was passionate. He sought to accumulate the largest collection of books in the Islamic empire under one roof, the House of Wisdom, and of having the all the books translated into Arabic - including ancient Greek texts by Plato, Socrates and Aristotle that had been lost to Europeans during the dark ages. Perhaps these periods were anomalies in history, but what stands out as common elements are the convivial features of these societies: the openness, tolerance, underwriting of intellectual pursuits and, most notably, the absence of war. This is perhaps the most important lesson that history can teach us.

In today’s world, the war-waging of Britain, the US and Russia (among others) in the Middle East and Asia Minor has led to the desperate human migrations we have witnessed recently. One would hope that the US and Britain would own what they have helped to create/destroy and grant safe haven for those fleeing war and terror. Instead it is Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan who have taken in the vast majority of asylum seekers (4.5 million). Under President Obama, the US took in over 150 thousand refugees in 2015-2016. Germany accepted over 500 thousand while Great Britain accepted only 43 thousand. Canada accepted 40 thousand, of which fourteen thousand were sponsored by private citizens.

But 45 has brought down an edict to halt the flow of refugees into the US from the middle East and Asia Minor that hail from the very countries upon which it wages its endless wars, while simultaneously rounding up “illegal” Latin American immigrants for deportation. These are not new policies, but the haste and intensity with which they have been amped up is terrifying. “White genocide”, the fictitious narrative of the far-right, is the thinly veiled rational behind these policies. Progressives will have to dig in their heels for the long struggle ahead as it appears that the far right is immune to truth, accountability, rule of law or any semblance of democratic principles.
