I like to imagine that in this AU, Maria just went onto the Bullet Train, got the suitcase, peeled off the sticker and then fell asleep all the way to Morioka. Nanao starts worrying, follows her, gets on the Komachi instead of the Hayate and ends up wrapped into some complete new nonsense. When they arrive at the final destination, she is fine and well rested while he is completely beaten up and at his wits end.
