Nina Ricci (birth name Maria Adélaide Nielli) was born on January 14,1883 in Turin, Italy. She was an Italian-born French fashion designer.
Nina Ricci moved with her family to France in 1895 aged 12. When Ricci was 13 she began an apprenticeship with a dressmaker.
Throughout her teenage years, Nina continued to chase her love for the fashion world. Along the way, she married Luigi Ricci, a composer and jewelry designer in 1904. The couple had a son named Robert. Four years after her marriage, in 1908 she joined Raffin, a fashion house, as a designer and worked there for next two decades. Soon she became a partner of Raffin and in 1932 became capable of establishing her own design company. At the time, Nina was forty-nine years old and was curious to create designs herself under her name. She designed the dresses while her son managed the finances and business on the whole. In order to make sure that the fabrics fitted together in the right way, she worked on the mannequin directly. Shortly, all her design collections became popular for their feminine, romantic and refined feel.
All through the thirties, the Nina Ricci House expanded rapidly and the one room place became three buildings with eleven floors each. The business operations, by the second world war, developed and included trendy accessories and leather commodities.
After the war, in 1945, designers tried to revive women’s infatuation with haute couture like before and at the same time attempted to raise money for relief funds. With the help of Lucien Lelong, Chambre de Commerce, Robert Ricci put his idea into action. An exhibition was held at Louvre, where more than 145 mannequins from 40 fashion designers in Paris, including Grès and Balenciaga were dressed in the best designs by the labels. After succeeding with this plan in one city, the exhibit toured most parts of Europe and then USA.
In 1935, Nina described the way she desired to design dresses: they should be light weighted, flowy and perfect for dancing; elegance and detail of the dress should attract clients and become their favorite; and lastly they need to be sober and appealing to young fashion minds.
Nina Ricci sketched out her ideas on paper, with colors and placing the model in a setting. She was highly proficient in using fabrics and other materials. Whenever she found a fabric she liked, it was used in the most effective manner. For example, once she saw black floral bordered silk and she cut a dress pattern that fitted flowers on the bust and the rest of the gown was plain black.
She dedicated most of her life to this field and loved dressing women. The geographical locations of her birth and youthful years, Italy and France, helped Nina to develop a strong aesthetic sense for quixotic, luxurious and distinguished clothing. Nina herself wore exclusive clothes and jewelry, designed by her husband, to parties.
In 1948, Nina’s label introduced L’Air du Temps, which was co-designed by her son and Marc Lalique. In the 1950s, when Nina was almost seventy years old, she gradually departed from design and chose to only direct the house. In 1954, Jules Francois Crahay became the head designer of the brand.
Nina Ricci  died in 1970 at the age of 87 and eighteen years later her son died too. The company they found is now being run by Robert’s son-in-law, Gilles Fuchs.

L'air du temps by Nina Ricci?
Classical, loverly, insouciant: adorable since 1948!
Nina Ricci, born Maria Nielli in Turin in 1883 (on the 14th January, day of Saint Nina), immigrated in France at age twelve, moving from town to town until she commenced her apprenticeship in Paris to become a seamstress. She didn’t know how to draw and made all her dresses directly on the mannequin, but she was talented, and in 1908 she was hired as a stylist by a fashion house of excellent repute, working her way to a position as an associate to the founder and main couturier, so that the name of the house became Raffin & Ricci—she had married Luigi Ricci in 1904, the son of a jeweller, and their son Robert was 3 when Nina entered Maison Raffin. However, in 1929, Monsieur Raffin died, and Nina Ricci closed the house for good, electing to retire. That is, until her son left his job as a publicist to open for his mother her own fashion house in 1932. Nina dealt with the couture part, Robert ran the business, but it was he also who launched the perfume collection—with Cœur joie, concocted by one of the very first female perfumers, the great, brave and bold Germaine Cellier—in December 1945.
L’Air du Temps was born three years later, in a time when fashion reflected a sort of general exhilaration amongst the recently-liberated population, even though the postwar period had its own hardships. France was destroyed just as much by Allied strategic bombing than by German ones and the country was being rebuilt, the industry modernised—Europe’s development was stalled by the two world wars, whilst the United States advanced steadily—and in France the temporary government led by General Charles de Gaulle imitated the American New Deal, nationalising a large part of the industry, implementing a planned economy, and thanks to powerful unions (Americans usually believe that they won WWII for everybody but in reality, the communists did quite a lot), other types of victories were won, such as the 1946 Social Security. In the midst of all that buzzing activity began a period referred to by later historians as ‘the Glorious Thirty’ (les Trente Glorieuses), and business went booming both for the French birth rate and for the fashion industry...
L’Air du Temps translates as ‘the air of the time’, part of a phrase that means one lives with one’s times; to ‘be in’ that air is to be fashionable. But that title conjures up also images of airy things, flight and freedom, as illustrated on the initial stopper, where Spanish sculptor Joan Rebull, who designed the first bottle, engraved a flying dove. In 1951, Marc Lalique (the son of prestigious crystal sculptor and jeweller René Lalique, a figure of the Art Nouveau period and a pioneer in designing beautiful perfume bottles), who had conceived the bottle for Cœur Joie, collaborated with Nina Ricci to redesign the bottle and created perhaps the most famous perfume flagon ever made, and certainly one of the most beautiful:
Tumblr media
L’Air du Temps too is beautiful. It is an absolutely luminous perfume, light and cheerful, elegant and sophisticated yet good-humoured, never superficial, friendly, a little bit daring, at the same time youthful and timeless, with a retro vibe that comes from the powdery orris root and the spicy carnation, adding warmth but also a little foxiness to the mix. It is a floral, a giant bouquet at that, but so well blended and so tastefully arranged that the rose, ylang and violet simply add their impressionistic touches but never overpower; the star of the juice remains the falsely-simple carnation, the spiciest of flowers—its natural scent is due for a large part to eugenol, the molecule responsible for the very peculiar smell of cloves. In perfumery, one typically recreates the scent of a carnation using lots of eugenol, balsamic notes (preferably cinnamaldehyde), rose, ylang, heliotropin (named after the ‘cherry pie’ notes found in heliotrope flowers, i.e. sunflowers), powdery iris (orris) root, maybe a little vanilla... You get the picture: L’Air du Temps is, indeed, a carnation scent.
The downside of this delightful recipe is that the ever-abominably frustrating IFRA, the International Fragrance Association, has greatly limited the use of eugenol in perfumery, down to 0.5% maximum (although toothpaste may contain up to 4.3%...), because of the potential risk of accrued skin sensitivity for people with allergies. A vastly overestimated risk, in reality, but there are very powerful lobbies in Brussels and the European Union, which has made the fabled precautionary principle statutory, doesn’t make a difference between perfumery, cosmetics and, say, life-threatening pesticides used in industrial agriculture. The E.U. therefore is terrified of oakmoss. To the detriment of all perfume lovers.
Still, L’Air du Temps managed, somewhat miraculously, to remain true to itself despite the imposed reformulations. It has lost in power indeed, in opulence perhaps, its staying power, predictably, has waned; but it still is just as loverly as it was in its youth. Most mirthful carnation ever! And especially exhilarating to me today because there aren’t that many carnations in contemporary perfumery—not just because of IFRA regulations, mind you, but because current women’s fashion is all about synthetic fruit with sticky praline notes and a hefty dose of tart patchouli, or transparent, nondescript florals. Carnation love peaked in the Interwar period, notably thanks to perfumer Ernest Daltroff, founder of house Caron (where men’s perfumery was invented, basically) who loved carnation and used it in several great perfumes of the Twenties, chiefly 1927 Bellodgia, but L’Air du Temps visibly inspired a few notable fragrances of the 60s–80s (including the wondrous Opium, in 1977). After that, it nearly vanished from perfumes altogether... until the 2010s, as a matter of fact, when Serge Lutens released Vitriol d’Œillet in 2011, the cloviest of carnations, and assumedly started carnation’s new career. It still isn’t fashionable, but it’s damn chic, and featured in remarkable fragrances, especially in niche perfumery.

Cada una de sus creaciones es muy poética y Nina Ricci es una marca con una historia extraordinaria.
¿Quién se esconde bajo el nombre de Nina Ricci?

THE 10 OLDEST FASHION HOUSES THAT ARE STILL IN OPERATION
Tumblr media
Many high end fashion brands have entered the market over the decades. And while a lot of them have left the stage, there are some fashion houses which have a long history, heritage and the keep growing and growing. We've listed down the 10 oldest fashion houses, that still make our hearts beat faster with every newly launched collection.
1837 - Hermès
Tumblr media
It might not come as a surprise to you that Hermès is the oldest fashion house that is still in business. It was founded by Thierry Hermès who originally produced saddles and other equestrian supplies. His son Charles designed the first unofficial Hermès bag, as an addition to their riding supplies, as it was for carrying saddles. The grandson of Thierry, Émile-Maurice, designed the first official handbag in 1922. Many bags followed, with the exclusive Kelly bag and Birkin bag as their most successful and famous designs. These elusive handbags are still highly sought after, all over the world.
1854 - Louis Vuitton
Tumblr media
Louis Vuitton's original profession was trunk maker and -packer. He started his own workshop in 1854, from where he served the French elite. At first he developed revolutionary trunks, made from canvas in the iconic monogram and damier print. Son Georges introduced the first Louis Vuitton bag, a big weekend bag for light travels, the Keepall. From one thing came another and soon enough a smaller version of the Keepall was released, the iconic Speedy. Many bags followed, such as the Alma, Noé and ofcourse the Neverfull.
1889 - Lanvin
Tumblr media
Jeanne Lanvin is the founder of fashion brand Lanvin. Originally she worked as a hatmaker and had her own atelier in Paris. She was an excellent seamstress and made the most beautiful clothes for her Daughter Marie-Blanche. No wonder these beautiful creations started to draw the attention of the French Elite and they requested copies for their own children. Soon enough, Lanvin produced dresses for mothers and daughters. After a while menswear, lingerie and fur were added to the collection. It was the first house where the entire family could shop their new garments. Iconic are their embroideries and beaded decorations.
1909 - Chanel
Tumblr media
The most popular brand in this list must be Chanel. Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel learnt the skill of sewing from the nuns in the orphanage, where she spent quite a while after the death of her mother. A skill that proves to be useful as she opens her first store in 1910, financed by one of her many beau's. At first she started off with hat making, but soon enough made comfortable clothing for women, a revolution for that time. All of Coco's designs were actually revolutionary and above all, timeless. Many items as the Chanel Classic Flap bag and the Chanel tweed jacket are sought after nowadays.
1913 - Prada
Tumblr media
Mario Prada founded the house of Prada in 1913, by selling leather goods. At first they sold English leather goods and after a while they started to produce their own leather goods, made from the iconic Saffiano material. Mostly trunks and other luggage were made for the Italian elite. In 1919, Prada became the supplier to the Italian Royal Household. Granddaughter Miuccia brought Prada to new heights in 1978, after the brand had a slow decline. Prada has been an iconic brand eversince, with pieces like the Saffiano Lux tote and the Nylon backpack.
1932 - Nina Ricci
Tumblr media
The Haute Couture house of Nina Ricci was founded in 1932, in Paris by Maria Nielli. Maria had always worked for the house of Raffin as a designer, but at her 49th she decided it was time for her own brand. She had a big design atelier and salons for all the fitting sessions. Her technique and materials we're very simplistic, yet very feminine, refined and romantic. She's a name most known for her very iconic perfumes, such as L'air du Temps.
1946 - Dior
Tumblr media
Iconic French designer Christian Dior founded the house of Dior in 1946. Christian was always interested in art, so he started out with opening his first art gallery, dealing artworks for many famous artists like Picasso and Dali. After working for designers Robert Piguet and Lucien Lelong, Christian created his own label. He made an unerasable impression with his first collection: the New Look. A very feminine line, with a narrow waist and knee-length skirts. The house of Dior is still a very big player in the high fashion industry, especially with their iconic handbags such as the Lady Dior.
1952 - Givenchy
Tumblr media
Hubert Givenchy started as the assistant of many big designers like Robert Piguet and Lucien Lelong, recommended by Christian Dior. In 1950 he became the assistant of Elsa Shiaparelli and was later promoted to creative director of the flagship store of Elsa's couture house. At the age of 24 he opened his own couture house: Givenchy. He focused on a wider audience than Shiaparelli and introduced blouses and light skirts with a cool and chic vibe. His first collection was an immediate success and many celebrities wanted to wear Givenchy. Not much has changed over the years as Givenchy still has a chic, but very cool vibe. The Bettina blouse is iconic, but the Nightingale bag, the Pandora bag, the Rottweiler print and the Antigona bag definitely made their impression too.
1960 - Valentino
Tumblr media
Italian fashion designer Valentino Garavani started working in the fashion industry at a very young age, as an apprentice at many small italian designers. When he got older he got a formal designing training in Paris at École des Beaux-Arts and the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture. He jump started his career at Guy Laroche. Valentino left Paris in 1959, to open his own fashion house in Rome, in 1960. He got inspired by the business models of the Parisian brands and did the same for his own fashion house. He quickly became known for his red dresses, in the shade that would become known as Valentino Red. He experienced his international debut in 1962 and his clientele included many famous artists and elite. Next to his red dresses, the Rockstud shoes and studded bags are more modern proofs of the strenght of this fashion house.
1961 - Yves Saint Laurent
Tumblr media
This designer might be last on the list, but is definitely not least. Yves Saint Laurent left for Paris at the age of 17, where he was able to show Michelde Brunhoff, director of French Vogue, his drawings and she published them directly. During his time at fashion school, he was introduced to Christian Dior and Yves worked at Dior for a long time. In 1961 he set up his own house and introduced his famous 'le Smoking' only five years later. Other iconic items are the sheer blouse and the jumpsuit. The house was recently renamed Saint Laurent with Hedi Slimane as creative director. In April 2016, Slimane was succeeded by Anthony Vaccarello.
