i struggle to read marcilles succubus as a sexual fantasy

i feel that chilchuck is the only one who gets a clear cut sex fantasy presented to him bc hes the only member of the party with the kind of sexual experience that would make him let his guard down that way. hes been married his entire adult life, was sexually active since he was a teenager, hes the only one who makes sex jokes (which dont land, see that extra on tentacles), and we know hes been faithful to the wife he has not seen in years. that is a very long time to be dry

while its certainly possible to read marcilles fantasy as a virgin maidens desired seduction, its also very chaste even for that. her knight is covered head to toe, and looks like an overdesigned fantasy character, with no sexual appeal. hes posed on a horse, but in such a way that specifically covers his groin. there isnt a physicality to him that kui uses often to draw the eyes to a sensual nature--compare that pose to how the winged lion poses (for laios, not marcille, he ALSO is posed less sexually when with marcille, though i could be forgetting a pose here or there) to highlight his seductive nature.

even in swinging down from his horse, theres just no carnality. hes stiff legged, body turned away from the camera.

its all very romantic in a courtly fashion. i.e. the fantasy is a lot more about this decorated man telling her shes a princess who belongs in a castle. its a 12yos dream boyfriend made real.

marcille isnt comfortable enough with herself as a potentially sexual being to get even close to what works on chilchuck--she seems almost afraid of recognizing peer-to-peer relationships, and that deeply impacts her ability to engage with sex. look back at how she engages with falins shows of intimacy in the bath scene and the bed scene after: when falin engages as an equal, as an adult, marcille panics, and pushes her back into a childs role. she starts lecturing falin when she tries to return mana, not listening to her say she has a well of it right now. when falin comments that shes grown tall and strong and may not fit in a single bed with marcille anymore, marcille dismisses her with "you'll always be a kid to me!"

while marcille is not a child, she straight up is not ready for sex yet bc of that resistance to having peer relationships

Isn't this post about the Winged Lion too?

We're getting there.

The Winged Lion's introduction is very subtle. At the start he looks like a random decor choice. Then in the Golden Country chapter we are told about his role as protector deity and that whoever unseals him will defeat the Dungeon Lord and become the next king. Laios has been apparently singled out for this.

Then nothing for a bit... then the succubus chapter. Yeah. Remember succubi? The monster/demon from Kabru's backstory?

The ones we meet are definitely the monster version.

We are told again: the demon succubi are legend. Tho Laios is right, it IS quite mysterious.

And then Laios drops the bomb:

His succubus fantasy started normal enough (for Laios), with a very silly and goofy fantasy of a monster Marcella turning everyone into a monster. But THEN, Laios finds himself conversing with a God, and as noted by various posts I would link to if I could, that's when the real seduction scene starts. Scylla Marcille was just for fun. The WL is the pro.

And, well, let me cut the chase here: we discover soon enough that the charming WL is, in fact, a demon. Who seduces mortals by granting their wishes, much like the succubus demon of legend... altho he doesn't use them as incubators for its children, but rather feeds on their desires and uses their minds to fuel the dungeon, that then acts as a honeypot to attract more humans.

But here's what's interesting to me:

The WL, much like Kabru, has been observing Laios for the chance to introduce himself.

The WL, much like Kabru, has singled out Laios as possible conqueror of the dungeon, and much like Kabru, is worried about his motivations.

In a story in which characters are often poised to be foils and mirrors of each other, i dont think that's a coincidence.

That seems like an asspull dude

IT SO ISNT

1) Kabru's backstory about being possibly the child of a succubus is an extra. The main meat of his story remains the same even if we cut it. We could just say his mom was, say, the widow of a dungeoneer.

Why introduce it at all, if not to introduce a parallelism with the WL?

2) game recognises game.

The WL recognises Kabru might be an obstacle in his plan to groom Laios into the perfect dungeon lord to execute his plan, and enacts a mini-sabotage:

We know at this point the WL is controlling Kensuke. Like three pages later hes speaking thru it. Why else would Kensuke show up at this time, if not to make sure Kabru can't lie his way thru his one and therefore drive a wedge between him and Laios?

Later on, this dialogue happens:

Again I wish I could link to the post that first made me realise that the WL's last line is meant for Kabru as much as Laios. In fact, giving that he's still answering Kabru's comment, it might be meant MORE for him. It sure irks Kabru the wrong way.

"I know what [the WL] is going to say..." Probably because it's similar to what KABRU would say. Again, game recognises game.

So, is Kabru like... an evil demon?

Nah. In fact, i think Kabru as a foil to the Winged Lion entirely exist to say: the desire to connect and understand other humans is great. Kabru is someone who Laios can connect with and feel understood by in the same way the WL made him feel, without the manipulation.

The WL consumes wishes. Kabru wants to understand why people do what they do. It's very similar. But. Consuming is necessarily a one-way action. There's a predator and a prey, a perpetrator and a victim. Understanding can, and should, be reciprocal.

We cannot know if Laios would have made all of the same choices had he not met Kabru. It's possible, Kabru definitely had an influence - we see his little face when Laios thinks back on imposing his wishes on everyone, for starters.

Crucially, however, what got Laios' ear in the end wasn't Kabru's experienced seduction. It was this:

Being a *friend* is different than being an object of seduction. It's reciprocal. Kabru comes clean with his desire to understand Laios, and in exchange, he reveals something of himself. In order to truly understand others, one must in the end submit to the mortifying ordeal of being understood, on an even level.

Ok, my long delayed post about Kabru and the Winged Lion. This does not end here, I'm adding more in a reblog.

Let's start here:

Two important takeaways here:

1) Kabru's hatred of monsters is caused not just by the Utaya catastrophe, but also from the fact that even before that, his unusual eye color was connected to monsters in local lore, and this led to ostracisation and, we can imagine, violence or at least the threat of violence towards him and his mother, serious enough that she escaped to Utaya, aka the place where the dungeon would kill her.

Kabru crucially does not place the fault for this on his father's family, but on himself for being born with 'monstrous eyes'. This is a normal way of reacting to ostracization in children, interiorising instead of projecting the trauma. It's much easier to imagine a world in which there's actually something wrong with you than one in which others might make you suffer for no reason. Monsters are also much more likely to be offered as an explanation by the adults than the actual more realistic explanations (infidelity or rape), which would not be considered appropriate.

This means that indirectly, child Kabru feels that his own 'monstrosity' is responsible for his mother moving to Utaya to protect him and ultimately dying.

2) in the Dungeon Meshi world there are specifically legends about *demon* succubi and incubi (real world lore says succubi prey on men and incubi on women and I assume that's what Laios is referring to with the distinction, but besides that lets assume theyre one and the same), distinct from the *actual monsters* succubi. The demons and monsters have a similar MO of using a person's desires to capture them, but while monster succubi suck a person's vital force, the demons supposedly use the men for their seed and the women for their womb to reproduce (again, completing dungeon meshi lore with bits of real world lore here). Laios, our local monster expert, thinks those demons are just legend. He tells us there are monsters that do use people as incubators for their eggs but I highly doubt that's Kabru's case, uncanny resemblance to a wasp notwithstanding (Laios...)

From here we go to:

Kabru's incredible rizz

This is where the tumblr search function spat in my face and ran away with the rest of my references while giggling. Oh well.

It's noted over and over in canon and extra material that Kabru is charming. More than that: Kabru *will do anything to get someone to like him*.

Worth noting that Daya and Holm *like* Kabru. This is not them disparaging an acquaintance, this is them levelling a criticism at a good friend, a criticism that seems to have been levelled at him before even ("it's no surprise...").

So, important takeaway: Kabru isn't just charming in general, he VERY SPECIFICALLY makes an effort to be charming. He needs people to like him, to trust him, and in order to obtain this, he's willing to lie and pretend.

Like with the Canaries: he needs them to trust him so they will keep him privy to their plans. So he plays up the poor innocent baby orphan angle:

And with Laios? The what (pretending to like monsters) we know, but why?

Kabru thinks Laios is the only one who can conquer the dungeon without the elves or the dwarves intervening and taking control. He is however very worried about his motivation. He wants to know why Laios is going so deep into the dungeon - beyond wanting to save his sister. What motivates him? Can he be trusted?

In the Toshiro chapters we find out that he has been trying to get in contact with him for weeks, possibly months, but this is the first time he has had a real possibility to meet him, and in order to make sure to leave a positive memory and possibly be an influence in the future, he pretends to be aligned with Laios' as much as possible, including hiding his hatred of monsters. I have written tons on this that has now been lost to tumblr like tears in the rain, but: I do not joke when I say that I think Kabru is flirting with Laios before and after the harpy egg incident. Let's be clear: Kabru's intentions are not romantic at this point. But he has noticed how lovestruck Laios was with Toshiro before their confrontation, and he's thinking, well, if I can get him to develop a similar crush on me, I can probably get him to listen to me more easily. Like I can mince words and put things in scary quotes but that's straight up what's happening. Kabru is trying to establish a close bond that wasn't there before: it might not be necessarily sexual, but it's definitely a type of seduction.

It kinda works.

For as long as I can remember, summer has been the unofficial box braid season. Obviously, the protective style is a year-round look that’s hardly confined to a specific type of weather. But when the weather warms up, I almost always see an uptick in braided styles in my neighborhood and amongst my fellow black girlfriends. And with that comes a desire to know how to style box braids beyond your basic down ‘do or top knot.

Though they do a good job of shielding your natural hair from the sun and making our morning routines a lot shorter, the combination of rising temps and hair flowing down our back results not only in sticky back sweat, but premature frizzing as well. Umberfield joined in the building boom by purchasing the block front of 105th Street between the newly-completed Riverside Drive and West End Avenue.  He commissioned the architectural firm of Janes & Leo to design a striking row of high-end residences that would stretch from No. 302 to 320.   The firm had just completed The Alimar around the corner at No. 925 West End Avenue, an exuberant high class apartment building in the Beaux Arts style.

For Umberfield’s string of homes, the firm would turn to the style again, creating a row of French-influenced mansions much more akin to their across-the-park cousins than their brick-and-stone West Side neighbors.  Construction began in 1899 and the row was completed a year later.  The homes were all highly similar, but discreetly individual.  The mansions were grouped in twos with each pair being nearly identical.  By arranging the row this way, the architects accomplished a harmonious flow and a sense of balance.

The row was designed as three pairs, No 312 being second from left.

The completed residences were offered for sale in 1900 for between $42,500 and $50,000--just over $1 million today.  Umberfield sold No. 312 to Charles de Cordova in April 1901.

Born in London in 1854, de Cordova was the sole proprietor of De Cordova Sons & Co., a tea brokerage company.  The Trade Journal's All About Tea called the firm a "leader in the American tea trade."

De Cordova was, indeed, a leader in his business.  In 1895 he had pushed for a "tea law" and was greatly credited for the passing of the 1897 Tea Importation Act which banned the importing of tea contaminated by pesticides, metals, and the like.  In 1918 his shipment of Japanese tea on the S. S. Tsushima Maru was the first tea shipment to pass through the Panama Canal.

A respected member of social and business clubs, De Cordova proved his novel decorating skills shortly after buying the 105th Street mansion.  The Virginia newspaper the Richmond Planet reported on June 1, 1901 "A new idea in table decorations was evolved by Charles De Cordova in a dinner given by the New York Athletic club to P. R. Todd, recently elected to a vice presidency of the New York, New Haven & Hartford railroad.  In the center of the table was a large bank of roses, around the edge of which was constructed a miniature railroad, on which a locomotive, baggage car and passenger coach, operated by electricity, whirled about the table at a speed of about 50 miles an hour."

Focus turned from business to social interests in the Spring of 1906.  The mansion was the scene of the wedding of de Cordovas' only child, Fanny, to Dr. John W. Sanborn of Boston.  The ceremony took place on April 18, 1906.

The family routinely summered in either Stockbridge, Massachusetts or Lakewood, New Jersey.  They took a break from the New York winter in 1907 by traveling to Kingston, Jamaica.   Their vacation amid palm trees and tropical breezes was horribly and tragically disrupted when a massive earthquake hit the island on the afternoon of Monday, January 14.  

Every building in Jamaica was damaged and, as had been the case less than a year earlier in San Francisco, fires erupted throughout the city.  An estimated 10,000 people died.  The Washington Times reported on January 17 "not less than $10,000,000 of her property [is] absolutely wiped out."  The newspaper listed among the injured Charles de Cordova and among the dead, his brother Edward.

Charles's wife, the former Ella Nichols, involved herself in several organizations, including the Women's Guild of St. Luke's Church and the School of Domestic Art and Sciences, of which she was treasurer.  

The couple left the West 105th Street house in 1925.  They moved into the Belnord apartments on West 86th Street.  The couple had been married 45 years at the time; but their domestic bliss was about to come to an end.  Throughout their marriage Charles had turned over his "surplus earnings" to Ella to use for living expenses and to invest.  While living on 105th Street his average income was about $245,000 by today's standards.

On August 22, 1929 the aging Charles sought an injunction against Ella, who was 72, to restrain her from disposing of their life savings.  Charles asserted in court that their son-in-law, Dr. Sanborn, had "maliciously influenced" Ella to move all the securities into her own name; presumably with the goal of getting control.  De Cordova lamented that Sanborn had destroyed the happiness of his home "and the comradeship of his wife for forty-eight years" and that he had "been stripped of all his savings of these years and is left, at the age of 75, with a broken home and less than $11,000 in securities which he happened to have in his own custody."  The ugly court battle continued for weeks.

In the meantime, Robert Davison Petty had purchased No. 312 from the de Cordovas in 1925 for $31,000, about $433,000 today.  Petty had been appointed dean of the New York Law School the year before; prompting his resignation as Assistant District Attorney.  Born on a farm in Washington Township, New Jersey, it was a farming accident which resulted in his conspicuous change in career paths.

As a young man he was cutting down a field of corn when the scythe slipped and severely cut his knee cap.  The injury prevented any further physical labor.  While he convalesced he decided he would like to become an attorney.  In 1883 he graduated fifth in his class at Princeton University.  Two years later he graduated form the Columbia Law School and would later become that school's Professor of Law.

Petty's wife was the former Florence Service.  The couple had seven children--Alice, Robert, Mary, Elizabeth, John, Katharine, and Richard--four of whom lived in the West 105th Street house with their parents.

On the night of June 2, 1932 Petty personally awarded degrees to 124 graduates at the commencement ceremonies of the New York Law School.  Upon returning home the 72-year-old chatted with his son-in-law, Ray Bouton, about his youth and said he would like to go back to the farm some day to live out his remaining years.

The following morning he did not come down to breakfast at the normal time, but the family assumed that he overslept after the strenuous night.  At noon daughter Elizabeth went up to waken him.  She discovered he had died in his sleep.  His funeral was held in the house the following Monday.

On December 10, 1937 son Richard Servis Petty married Marcille Littlefield in the West End Presbyterian Church.  Richard had followed in his father's footsteps and was also a lawyer.  The marriage did not reduce the population of No. 312, but increased it.  The New York Times noted "Mr. and Mrs. Petty will live at 312 West 105th Street after a trip to Canada."

Daughter Katharine's wedding seven months later was held in the family home.  Katharine, like her siblings, had enjoyed a privileged upbringing.  She attended the Ethical Culture School, graduated from the Horace Mann School for Girls and Miss Hunter's School.  She married Alvah Howard Lance on July 16, 1938.

No. 312 West 105th Street sold was sold on August 20, 1945.  Florence would survive until February 8, 1960, having outlived not only her husband, but daughters Katharine and Elizabeth.

The house had became home to Jewish doctor from Hungary, Laci Klein and his wife, Ansci, who had recently escaped from almost certain death in his homeland.  Once here, according to Judy Cohen in her Song of the Silent Bell, as Klein's siblings escaped the Nazis regime, he provided them a place to live.  Ansci's family was tragically lost to the Holocaust.  In 1952, upon becoming naturalized citizens, the Kleins changed their surname to Kay.  They remained at No. 312 until early in 1956.

TV One's Upcoming Christmas Films Releasing in December 2017

     SILVER SPRING, MD - NOVEMBER 15, 2017  - TV One rings in the spirit of Christmas with the world premieres of two new holiday movies: Miss Me This Christmas, premiering  Sunday, December 3 at 7 p.m. ET and You Can't Fight Christmas, premiering  Sunday, December 10 at 7 p.m. ET. Both movies are set at the fictional Chesterton Hotel. A classic landmark, the Chesterton serves as the epicenter of a small town's annual Christmas celebration.

     Miss Me This Christmas , starring  Erica Ash   (Jean of the Joneses, Survivor's Remorse), Redaric Williams (The Quad, Young and the Restless),  Eva Marcille (Real Housewives of Atlanta, America's Next Top Model),  Allen Maldonado (Black-ish, Ringside)  and  Nathan Davis Jr. (Detroit), is the story of "perfect couple" Regina (Ash) and Franklin (Williams). The pair celebrated a fairytale Christmas wedding three years ago and seemed to have it all. Yet, now their marriage is on the rocks. When Franklin comes home at dawn after a night of partying with colleagues, Regina thinks he has cheated on her with his ex-girlfriend. Though Franklin denies it, the trust has been broken. The couple separates and the divorce is set to be finalized on their three-year anniversary.

     Depressed and ready to drink her way through the holidays, Regina's free-spirited best friend Trish McDonald (Marcille) intervenes. To cheer her up, the sneaker empire heiress drags Regina off to her place, a luxurious suite at The Chesterton. Franklin still loves Regina and wants to reconcile. But, when Regina accepts a hasty marriage proposal from millionaire tech entrepreneur Ulysses Danburg (Maldonado), Franklin fears he'll never win her back. Fortunately, there may be a happy ending after all. And just in time for Christmas.

             You Can't Fight Christmas stars Brély Evans (Being Mary Jane, Born Again Virgin), Andra Fuller (Here We Go Again, Black Jesus), Persia White   (Girlfriends), Richard Gant (The Mindy Project)  and  Marla Gibbs (227). The story begins with the annual holiday decorating of the Chesterton Hotel by interior design expert Leslie Major (Evans). She is hard at work managing the transformation when she meets and develops a crush on the hotel owner's handsome grandson, Edmund James (Fuller). Soon she discovers that Edmund and his uptight business partner, Millicent (White), have secret plans. They intend to completely revamp the hotel into an upscale business resort once Edmund inherits it from his grandfather. Scheming Millicent also has plans for Edmund that involve a wedding ring. Is he ready to take their partnership to the next level? Can Leslie save the hotel and its Christmas legacy? Will Edmund find his Christmas spirit? Viewers will have to tune in to find out.
