"I see us giving love to each other in a time of quiet between storms. It's what we were meant to do."

“Prove to me you are worth something.” 

A slap across the face. Then another.

Walburga grabbed Regulus’ jaw and forced him to look at her after she’d struck him to the floor. Regulus felt tears burning in his eyes and he glared back into his mother’s face. He couldn’t let himself cry just yet.

“I will not have another failure of a son.” Another smack from her ringed hand. Another swear. Another curse. Another cut that wouldn’t stop bleeding.

Regulus let his tears fall freely. They streamed down his face, seemingly never-ending. His sobs wracked his lungs as he shoved his palms into his eyes to stop the tears. He shouldn’t cry.

He startled when he felt warm hands gently move his own away from his eyes. Regulus came face to face with James Potter, gazing down at him like he was God.

James cupped Regulus’ jaw and wiped away a tear on his cheek with a calloused thumb.

“Don’t cry, Reg, please,” James pleaded. “You are worth more than the world to me.” He put his forehead against Regulus’.

Regulus closed his eyes, unable to handle everything he felt. Afraid to look into James’ eyes and see the truth that inevitably lay there.

“Please look at me,” James whispered. Regulus obeyed. The look in James’ broke his heart. “You’re beautiful, did you know that?”

Regulus choked out a mixture of a laugh and a cough. He bit back a shy smile.

“I love you, Regulus.”

“I love you too, James.”

Instead of the usual "Lohengrin," four jubilant Harlemites swung up the aisle to the tune of "Nagasaki" when the were married at the Golden Gate Ballroom on March 1, 1940. The Rev. Ward Nichols performed the ceremony uniting Eddie West and Pauline McDurfee and Oliver Sparks and Sara Jackson, in center.
