« [H]aving a voter who stays home or votes for a third party is really the same thing as losing a vote to Trump because the person who gets a plurality of votes in states is the one who wins all the electors. That's our system. It's not a popular vote system. »
— Mara Liasson at NPR's All Tinings Considered.
There's a tremendous amount of civics illiteracy in the United States.
In 2024, the only way to prevent a far right takeover by Trump or some other anti-abortion or homophobic extremist is to vote Democratic. Inaction or a half-witted "protest vote" for an impotent third party candidate has the same practical effect as voting for Trump or a Trump clone.
Contrary to what Ralph Nader supporters were saying in 2000 when they tanked climate activist Al Gore in favor of George W. Bush who put Samuel Alito on the Supreme Court, you do not make things better by making them worse.
To use a cliché, progress is a marathon rather than a sprint. Republicans know this and worked for 49 years trying to overturn Roe v. Wade. To achieve a better country and planet, we need to be in it for the long haul and not get distracted by the political equivalent of "one hit wonders" dangling shiny objects in front of us.

NPR's Mara Liasson To Deliver Feigenbaum Lecture On "America At The Crossroads" In Pittsfield
Joe Biden is largely campaigning from his basement and Donald Trump is accepting GOP’s nomination far from the convention floor in one of the strangest elections in memory. Covering it all is Mara Liasson, who is heard daily on WAMC as NPR’s national political correspondent, where she has worked for 35 years. She also appears regularly on FOX News.

“The Georgia law and the Colorado voting rules are not equivalent,” Liasson said before Domenech interrupted NPR’s political correspondent as she began to perpetuate misinformation.
“No, that’s not true Mara and you can’t get away with saying that, that is not true,” Domenech said. “They are very close in terms of proximity and you cannot get away with saying that
When you look at this Georgia law, it is extremely reasonable. There is no case that can be reasonably be made that it represents Jim Crow in the south.”

"For the past few months, some analysts have speculated that if Republicans win control of the House in 2022, they could elect [t]rump as House speaker — something that would be perfectly allowed by the Constitution, which doesn't require the speaker to actually be an elected member of the House of Representatives. This would bring [t]rump back into political power two years earlier than running for president, as well as put him in the line of presidential succession.
"But on Monday, NPR suggested that the mere rumors of this idea could be a drag on Republicans in House races next year.
"'Democrats would want to force every Republican House candidate to answer the question: If [t]rump wants the job, would they vote for him?' reported Mara Liasson. 'Saying no would anger their MAGA base, but saying yes would risk turning off swing voters who are exhausted with [trump].'"

Quote
NPR’s Mara Liasson yesterday said “the Left will simply have to be patient and take what it can.” Corporatists don’t just suppress campaigns; they create narratives & expect the rest of us to buy into them. The Left isn’t some errant child; it’s the biggest grown-up in the room.

Veteran journalist Cokie Roberts, who joined an upstart NPR in 1978 and left an indelible imprint on the growing network with her coverage of Washington politics before later going to ABC News, has died. She was 75.
Roberts died Tuesday due to complications from breast cancer, according to a family statement.
A bestselling author and Emmy Award winner, Roberts was one of NPR's most recognizable voices and is considered one of a handful of pioneering female journalists — along with Nina Totenberg, Linda Wertheimer and Susan Stamberg — who helped shape the public broadcaster's sound and culture at a time when few women held prominent roles in journalism.
Having so many female voices at a national broadcaster was nothing short of revolutionary in the 1970s, NPR national political correspondent Mara Liasson recalled in an interview with The Daily Princetonian earlier this year.
"[W]e called them the Founding Mothers of NPR, or sometimes we called them the Fallopian Club," she said.
Liasson said it wasn't so much that NPR had a mission for gender equality, but that the network's pay, which was well below the commercial networks of the day, resulted in "a lot of really great women who were in prominent positions there and who helped other women."
By the time Roberts joined ABC News in 1988 — while retaining a part-time role as a political commentator at NPR that she maintained until her death — women were increasingly commonplace at broadcast networks and newspapers.

The Ford-Kavanaugh hearings were both a moment the country watched together but also one that seemingly drove us further apart. We’ll cover reactions to the hearings throughout the show today. President Trump yesterday, before heading to a rally in West Virginia, expressed only support for Brett Kavanaugh as the FBI investigates

Trump to send 'surge' of hundreds of federal agents to cities
Mara Liasson at NPR reminded listeners what this is really about:
[T]his situation has been happening for this 3 1/2 years that the president has been in office.
[ ... ]
So I think the bottom line is the president is behind in the polls. He thinks a law-and-order message is effective for his base and maybe even beyond it.
Trump certainly doesn’t seem to be bothered much by crimes by white Republicans. Look at his clemency for convicted felons Joe Arpaio and Roger Stone.
Trump has largely given up the fight against COVID-19. He thinks voters won’t notice his enormous pandemic failure if he sends federal agents into American cities.
