Nomura Design Path
Apologises for the slight delay on this, health issues cannot be helped. Storyboards from Just Add Water will be crossposted tomorrow.
While there is a solitary addition in the artbook where her human form has swepy bangs instead of a fringe and wearing gloves, we're fairly lucky in that there's a fair amount of Nomura's concepts are online! This one by Headless Studios is the earliest so it's unknown if she was a hit the ground running after being redesigned from The Crooked Man or there was anything else prior.
Her weapon choice being swords seemed to settle fairly early though and were basic katana at the time. Her hair style, limbs, belt and horns appear to have been the biggest back and forth until settling on a combination.

We also have this beefy slide that appeared at the 2016 Annie Awards, where Trollhunters won best Character Design, that contains two additional expressions too.

And one extra from the official instagram for luck.

In addition thanks to Rustam Hasanov, Trollhunters' Art Director, we have a maquette of her! This is a video with a turnaround.

But wait you might be thinking, she has the khopesh already here so where did those come from? Well thanks to Brent Noll we can answer that one! Below shows Headless Studios with the updated Nomura design holding one of her fabled weapons. From this he created a full break down including angles, perfect for evil perspective needs.

In addition to that, Jessica Bulinski has both a Nomura paint over of the changeling herself, a good look at her weaponry and a full process of how exactly it lights up. Because the eye glow is an effect it's not shown here meaning you can see the base colour easier.

Enjoy the chaotic gremlin/Curator Troll! All previous design threads now have titles too to make them easier to spot, debating making a specific tag.

"La saga des frères Erainn" de mon amie Thalie Perrot à lire sans modération! Une jolie idée de cadeaux pour Noël.
https://bigbellesmag.blogspot.com/.../la-saga-des-freres...
Je tiens à souligner que Thalie est en auto édition depuis juillet.
Elle réalise tout, à refait les maquettes des livres elle-même, et s'occupe de tout! Je trouve ça vraiment courageux et c'est bien d'aider les auteurs.

Maquette painting update
Tumblr media
During this class I focused on balancing the tones relative to each other. Using the top of the O as a reference for the lightest light, I made the background lighter to make the face of the other letters seem darker. Fixing the halo issue and crisping up the edges helped a lot to create the form of the letters and give the illusion of 3d form. I still struggle with dry brushing and it’s evident in the uneven background but I feel myself improving.

Week 15 (FINAL WEEK!!)
Updated Tumblr
Tumblr media
This is my final maquette painting. I would say this was the most challenging and my least favorite painting. It was the most challenging for me because I just couldn't figure out how to make the words look 3D, as well as trying to make sure they look exactly like the original maquette. It was also hard because once we put the glaze down there was no turning back, especially if there was any mistakes with the acrylic. Also, waiting for the glazes to dry too much longer than I expected. Now the reason it was my least favorite was the lack of experimenting and creativity to it. I would say, in comparison, the collage was my absolute favorite because I was able to be a little more creative and use colors to make certain parts pop. Which leads me to my final collage painting.
Tumblr media
This is my final collage painting. I found this painting to be so fun, creative, and easy. First, I was able to photoshop two random things and put them together, which was so fun. And I absolutely loved that I was able to experiment and use warm/cool colors to reflect the mood I wanted in the painting. For the mood I wanted it to be electric jellyfish, energetic and fun, while floating in space, which is calm and quiet. And I think the colors really helped create that vibe. The dark/lighter blue helped create that calming effect, allowing the jellyfish to float. While the orange and yellow, used as highlights on the jellyfish, helped give it that electric effect. I really enjoyed painting this piece!!
Other works for resubmission:
Color wheel (the second part!!)

And my entire Tumblr is up to date!!

Kaiju Week in Review - Lighting Recap (April 16-May 13, 2023)
Some indie studio called Legendary Pictures released an entire video to reveal the title of its next film. Looks interesting, I guess.
Press notes and a teaser trailer are out for Ultraman Blazar. It's going to have Kiyotaka Taguchi back as the main director, a host who's also the leader of the defense team, a new mecha, and a simuldub... in other words, it's going to drag me back to the Ultra Series. The Ultraseven short that Tsuburaya has cued up for the 55th anniversary is looking good too.
Godzilla Rivals: Biollante Vs. Destoroyah was a fun capper to the series, with incredible attention to geographical detail. Or... is it the end? There's a "next issue" image at the end showing SpaceGodzilla rampaging through an alien world; that one's going to mark Matt Frank's triumphant return to writing/interior art duties on an IDW Godzilla comic. Also, the Monsters & Protectors series is ending with a double-sized issue called Summer Smash. Expect Mothra, Jet Jaguar, and Mecha-King Ghidorah in that one.
Zigra's been revealed as one of Gamera's foes in Gamera: Rebirth.
The new Godzilla Battle Line units are Mechagodzilla (1974) and... Chibi Godzilla?!?
Speaking of Chibi Godzilla, please do not sleep on Chibi Godzilla Raids Again. You can get all caught up with it in about 22 minutes.
Keizo Murase's Brush of the God has wrapped production, per Kickstarter updates. They're aiming to have the film done by October.
The Movie Monster Series onslaught continues this summer with Monster X and Fire Rodan. There's also going to be a very cool figure based on a maquette used during production of the original Godzilla... unfortunately, it's an event exclusive, so expect ridiculous aftermarket prices.
Finally, a reminder to check out @lsdjellyfishu's translation of Gamera vs. Barugon, an action-packed manga set between Gamera 2 and 3!

Lord Huron on the menu
Those World Enders - always with their antennae raised for signals from way out there - Lord Huron vibes . Some are more abstract than others.
LH fan Melissa Holmquist recently came upon one that just about grabbed her by the collar. She posted this photo on the World Enders web site, along with a note:
"Had a couple of drinks at a local hotel bar last night. They updated their cocktail menu and look what I found on the back."
The bar is in the Landmark Inn, in Maquette, Michigan.

Austin Lee
Using both analog and digital processes, Austin Lee blends abstraction and figuration, humor and pathos, in exuberant paintings and sculptures that evoke the early internet. He initially mocks up many of his canvases using virtual reality modeling software (an update from Photoshop, which he used earlier in his career) and 3D prints many of his sculptures in bronze and plastic. Lee then recreates a distinctly digital aesthetic with airbrush and paintbrush. Working at small and large scales, the artist saturates his work with glowing, electric hues. Humans, animals, and hybrid creatures are frequent motifs, and Lee understands his compositions and hand-painted structures as animated representations of his own feelings.
One of the very first artists to explore and adopt digital technologies in his practice, Austin Lee creates his paintings and sculptures in VR, using Oculus Rift’s ‘Medium’ as his initial paintbrush, working in a purely virtual space he has described as being “like a blue void that feels infinite.”
The whimsical, often tragi-comic figures and compositions that emerge from this imaginary studio nod to the legacy of Surrealism, Colour Field painting, Pop Art and the history of animation, as much as to the emojis and digital idioms that have become part of our daily visual vocabulary. His process however retains a classically painterly approach. He re-creates these image-ideas by hand, with an airbrush, acrylic and spray paint on canvas, on the surface of his sculptures and in his animated short films, which he builds up painstakingly using a combination of early animation techniques and current animation technology. Virtual reality is just that for him – it is an enabler of, but does not substitute, his painterly methodology.
“3D modelling has helped me explore light in the paintings – I used to be really into the flatness of Photoshop and digital drawing, but that’s slowly been changing for me over the years. 3D modelling makes it easy to simulate light and that has been super exciting to me as a painter. It helps me visualize space and light on unreal things. Kind of like making a maquette or clay sculpture or sketch to work out an idea. I am really interested in the overlap between digital and physical objects and it’s exciting to make translations back and forth between mediums with a specific work.” Austin Lee.
His art-historically loaded motifs – the dove, the horse, the flower, the young girl, mother and child, the old man, the painter – are depicted in deceptively simple form and in flattened spatial depth. His subjects appear to weightlessly float in a hallucinatory bath of colour, morphing out of the picture plane to become whole in sculptural and animated form. The relationship between his virtual drawing, his animation, his painting and his sculpture is constantly evolving, as he pushes the possibilities of each medium.

Maquetteing - Flapping mech pt.2
Tumblr media
[updated CAD design including more space between the baseplate and the brackets, and including stopper points]
I altered the CAD to add in points for stoppers, as well as widening the brackets to allow space for washers.
[video of the working wing flap mechanism]
I tested out the elastic to allow the wings to move down after they were pulled up with a string. It worked a lot better than I expected, however, the elastic that I used was far too strong. I have ordered some 2mm elastic that I think will be a better strength so that you aren't fighting the mechanism to make it work.
For now, I am happy with how this part of the mechanism works and am going to move on to the feather design. I think this could be the hardest part of the 3 mechanisms so am going to give myself more time to experiment.

An Yves Saint Laurent Loulou bag reimagined in Mira Atom shower mixer fitting and SQ Professional storage container cardboard. The cardboard picked up in Brixton market several weeks ago comes together in stylish tones of black, silver and copper. Containers for bread, tea, coffee and sugar mixed with cascading water what more could one want. The Loulou is really defined by its quilted pattern which I have managed to recreate in a maquette but not in a reimagined final version. This bags identity is determined more by its shape. INTRO TO THE MAKING OF: CHARACTER DESIGN
Tumblr media
On the Friday before last, my class attended a session for our new lesson; Introduction to 'making of. We were first given a QR code that sent a link to watch the health and safety video of the uni fabrication lab.
After watching this, we were given an exercise to design a character on the spot. first, we were given 2 minutes for sketching a design, another 2 minutes to sculpt a plasticine maquette and another 2 minutes to sketch out turn-around poses based on the sketches and use our maquettes as reference.
Tumblr media
I started by quickly sketching an idea for a character in my sketchbook. For some reason, I had unicorns and other horse-like creatures on my mind that day, and so I drew a character that evoked a similar serene and magical aura that a unicorn would. I decided to make this character a biped with a cloak as I felt this would be easier to sculpt than a biped like a horselike unicorn. I also wanted most of the weight to be lower down on the body such as in the hands and feet so that when I go to sculpt a maquette, the sculpture would have the structural integrity to stand on its own. Ultimately, while I hadn't initially thought about this character's backstory, from some of the details I gave them like their cloak, their elegant posture, and their previously mentioned unicorn influences, I decided they were some kind of powerful magic user. A guardian of some mystical plain of sorts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, after sculpting the roughly 2 or 3-inch maquette, I used it as a ruler to draw turn-around poses one from the front and one from the side. I ran out of time before I could finish the turnaround and make a third pose from a 3/4 angle.
Once we were done with this exercise, we were given a homework task to create a character design based on one of four prompts to choose from:
ninja cat
independent robot
emotional demon
insect warrior
Out of these four options, the one I was most drawn to was the insect warrior prompt. I started on the design in the class by sketching out a few different insect heads and body types. I will continue to work on this at home and post updates here.
Tumblr media
Before going home, however, I wanted somewhere to safely store my plasticine Maquette. When I asked about this, the teacher running the fabrication lab suggested displaying it in the glass cabinet just outside of the fabrication lab. So I agreed to house it there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I learned a lot during this session about character design and the use of maquettes. I hope I can expand on this knowledge as I work on the new briefs given to me in the intro to the 'Making of' class.

Maquette update
Tumblr media
#Maquette update how to
This interest reached a height with MMORPGs like Asheron’s Call 2, Star Wars Galaxies, and World of Warcraft, on which William spent considerable time up until college. William’s first console was the NES, but when he was eight, it was The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening on Game Boy that fully cemented his interest in the format. All the while, William’s passion for games remained. Upon graduating from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, William entered the realm of fine arts administration, assisting curators, artists, and fine art professionals with the realization of contemporary art exhibitions.

To exploit the range of functions that comes from the freedom to bind a variety of redox cofactors within a single maquette framework, this c-type cytochrome maquette is designed with a second, non-heme C, tetrapyrrole binding site, enabling the construction of an elementary electron transport chain, and when the heme C iron is replaced with zinc to create a Zn porphyrin, a light-activatable artificial redox protein. Furthermore, this c-type cytochrome maquette is designed with a displaceable histidine heme ligand that opens to allow functional oxygen binding, the primary event in more sophisticated functions ranging from oxygen storage and transport to catalytic hydroxylation. Nevertheless, we show here that we can efficiently interface with the natural cellular machinery that covalently incorporates heme into natural cytochromes c to produce in vivo an artificial c-type cytochrome maquette. Proteins made by the maquette method integrate sophisticated oxidoreductase function into evolutionarily naive, non-computationally designed protein constructs with sequences that are entirely unrelated to any natural protein. The successful use of man-made proteins to advance synthetic biology requires both the fabrication of functional artificial proteins in a living environment, and the ability of these proteins to interact productively with other proteins and substrates in that environment.

Week 14
Update!!!
Tumblr media
For this week, I had allowed the original glazing to dry and started adding the shadows that went underneath the words and inside each letter. I did that to really help add that 3D effect to the words, however, I realized that I wanted to add more white highlights to the top of the letters. I also wanted to make the shadows a little more dark and more purple then red, because within the original maquette, the shadows have shades of blue and purple peaking through. But I had to wait a couple days to let it dry and then continue.
(Started painting the collage but didn't take a progress pic!!)
Post about another students work:
Tumblr media
The paintings colors work well together to help reflect the moods that Hayko was trying to paint. I would like to think that the red represents anger, while the blue represents the worry of escaping. I also think that the line in the middle between the two images is really cool because it allows for a moment, for the two images to come together, like it's two separate worlds. For things I've learned, I saw the way he started his painting by planning ahead in how big and where he wanted the parts of his collage to go. And so, I followed those steps to help proportion my painting of the collage to the canvas.
