Sleepy Hollow NY - Philips Manor Halloween 03
flickr
Sleepy Hollow NY - Philips Manor Halloween 03 by Daniel Mennerich Via Flickr: Visited the old Philipsburg Manor and step back in time. It's 1750, and Philipsburg Manor is a farming, milling, and trading center owned by the Philipses, a family of Anglo-Dutch merchants in the village of Sleepy Hollow. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow the home of the headless horseman, a novel by Washington Irving.

Harps Across America Episode 21 On the way back home from a fantastic show is Connecticut we stopped by Sleepy Hollow, NY. It was a little early in the day for a headless horseman sighting but we did see some of his haunts. Including the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and the Philipsburg Manor House. Before leaving the state we made one last stop to the house where “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” was written, Washington Irving’s Sunnyside. While we didn’t have time for a tour of the actual house we did wander around the grounds and peer in some of the house windows. The estate itself is beautiful with views of the Hudson River and lovely gardens. Visitors are allowed to wonder the property, after purchasing a ticket, and you’re welcome to take as much time as you like. I always fine it inspiring to walk around property or homes of other creatives. I grew up having some of Irving stories read to me and/or watching them on the TV Show “Wishbone” including “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle”. Getting to see where he lived brought the stories alive just a little bit more for me.

Washington Irving
(Apr. 3rd 1783 - Nov. 28th 1859)
Brief Bio:
Washington Irving was one of America's first internationally acclaimed authors.  He grew up in New York, but spent a good portion of his adult life abroad.  He wrote under various pseudonyms, served in the War of 1812, and after many years of travel was appointed Minister to Spain.  As a writer he was acclaimed by Sir Walter Scott and James Fenimore Cooper, and gave advice to aspiring writers including Poe, Melville, Hawthorne, and Longfellow.  He retired at his historic house on the Hudson, where he lived out his last days writing short stories and biographies.
Notable Works:
Knickerbocker's History of New York (1809)
Rip Van Winkle (1820)
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1820)
The Life of George Washington (1855-1859)
The Grave:
Sleepy Hollow Cemetery is an enormous graveyard.  It covers several hills, houses many historical figures, and borders the original Sleepy Hollow forest.  While you could park at the Cemetery's main office, where maps are available, this is about a quarter mile's walk from Irving's grave. It's far easier to park at the southernmost tip of the graveyard, by the Old Dutch Church.  The gates close at 4pm, but there's still room to park out front.  Walk past the Church's doors into the Old Dutch Burial Ground, and take the main path up the hill and into the cemetery.  The Irving plot is entirely enclosed, with a little black gate by the road.  Washington Irving himself is buried next to an enormous tree, surrounded by his family.
Sleepy Hollow Cemetery
540 N. Broadway
Sleepy Hollow, NY 10591
Surrounding Area:
Sleepy Hollow is a small town that draws a lot of tourism, particularly around Halloween.  Though primarily known for its association with Irving's legend, there are many other tourist attractions, such as the Philipsburg Manor, Kykuit, and Lyndhurst, each of which have their own unique history.  Irving's historic house, Sunnyside, is further south in Irvington.  A nearby recreational spot is Kingsland Point Park, located right on the shore of the Hudson, with the Tappan Zee Bridge in full view.  It's a great place to let your dog off the leash or have a picnic.  The entrance is just south of the Philipse Manor train station.
