A 1999 classic.
Going in, I knew to expect: Aamir Khan, Sonali Bendre, Naseeruddin Shah, 'Jo Haal Dil Ka,' 'Hoshwalon Ko Khabar,' 'Zindagi Maut Na Ban Jaye,' and 'Is Deewane Ladke Ko.'
What I wasn't expecting: Mukesh Rishi making it through the whole film as a good guy; Manoj Joshi, in his first movie!; Nawazzudin Siddiqui, also in his first movie!; multiple baddies meeting their end by being stabbed in the throat; Upasana Singh; an ending that almost promised a sequel, well before sequels were a thing (especially in Bollywood)... a sequel that we never got, leaving Govind Namdeo's character unresolved and free to roam; learning that after Sarfarosh, the director's next 2 (and only) directorial ventures have been Shikhar (2005 movie with Ajay Devgn and Shahid Kapoor) and A New Love Ishtory (with Himesh Reshammiya). How that happened, I don't know - you'd think after starting with something like this, he'd have been able to churn out something else excellent.
Because this movie is fucking excellent. Mukesh Rishi is brilliant, and his character is great - and even better, they don't feel the need to kill him (or Manoj Joshi's character, either). Aamir Khan is awesome, even for someone who has his leg broken once, then almost broken again, and then immediately after decides to jump off the roof of a building to chase a bad guy (I guess being awesome doesn't necessarily mean you have common sense). Naseeruddin Shah is also brilliant, in a good/bad role that sorta mimics his go in Mohra 5 years prior (without the fake blindness and with a lot more poetry, though he still gets to play an instrument).
There's no 'surprise twist' of some high-level cop or something being in cahoots with the baddies, or some unnecessary death of a side character for some drama/motivation for our hero (the very early death of his brother is enough motivation). Sure the movie is intercut with some songs (some great songs, too, at that), but it steers clear of a lot of the typicalities of 90s/00s Bollywood, letting the story provide the drama (well, and the Naseeruddin 'twist,' if you want to call it that, but that seemed like a given, and they didn't exactly hide it till the end either) and letting the strength of our actors and characters carry the movie. Also, no tried/forced comedy - I mean, there was bits with Sonali Bendre, and that one street guy who was one of Rishi's contacts, but nothing over-the-top annoying, like you frequently feel when you go back and watch other movies from that time now (Soldier and Ajnabee, as relatively recent re-watches, come to mind).
That Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam won Filmfare 'best film' and won SLB 'best director;' that Anil Kapoor won 'best supporting actor' for Taal - absolutely ridiculous, given this movie and given Mukesh Rishi's amazing role/acting (I haven't seen Vaastav, so I can't say anything about Sanjay Dutt winning over Aamir Khan) - and yes, I know the awards are heavily biased towards the same people over-and-over again, but that doesn't change the fact that it is really fucking stupid. The only 1999 movie I enjoyed more than Sarfarosh, and this may at least partially be influenced by the happy memories of watching this movie with family (and also partially by the fact that there is less throat impalement), is the Ajay Devgn/Saif Ali Khan-starrer Kachche Dhaage.
This is just a plain, damn good, excellent movie.

Movie Review| Samrat Prithviraj: An expansive, though dreary, historical epic
Was Prithviraj Chauhan, in the late 12th century, abducted by Ghazni, blinded in both eyes, placed in chains, and made to battle three live lions in a medieval amphitheatre? I don’t know. Indeed, if the historical accuracy of the above sequence is of any consequence to you, you’re probably not the intended audience for Samrat Prithviraj. The film states up front that it’s based on ‘folklore’ and ‘literary’ sources, mainly the epic poem Prithviraj Raso. Also, the poem’s writer, Chand Bardai, is present in most scenes. So, it’s never quite clear if what’s unfolding on screen is for real, or a figment of an imaginative mind. Reverence, not accuracy, is of immediate concern to writer-director Chandraprakash Dwivedi.
A poster of Samrat Prithviraj had described the venerated warrior king as India’s last Hindu emperor. The title song, Hari Har, written by Varun Grover, compares him to ‘Mohan’, ‘Arjun’ and, most stunningly, ‘Dashanan’ (another name for the devout, ten-headed Ravana). As played by Akshay Kumar, this pious and valiant king doesn’t disappoint in person. He is goodness incarnate. When Mir Hussain, the brother of Ghurid dynasty ruler Muhammad Ghori, comes seeking refuge in his court, Prithviraj happily assents. That’s not all. After defeating the brutish Ghori in the First Battle of Tarain, he spares his enemy’s life, urging him to show bravery next time, not cowardice.
Prithviraj’s virtues are inextricably linked to his religion. The king and his samants—led by the figure of Kaka Kanha (Sanjay Dutt)—are of a martial caste (unnamed). They wear saffron headgear and accouterments, and frequently reference their ‘dharma’. What’s interesting, amid the imagery, is how Dwivedi recasts this religiosity in somewhat progressive terms. “It’s my dharm to give asylum to the needy,” Prithviraj retorts, when questioned on granting Mir Hussain refuge. His goodness transcends orthodoxy and communal divides. At the same time, though, there’s a niggling suspicion that this very warmth, this kingly generosity, will be repaid in harm. This happens when Ghori (Manav Vij) returns for a second attack, and takes Prithviraj prisoner via stealthy (read ‘deceitful’) means.
Between the two battle sequences, both sumptuously choreographed and shot, the film dwindles in pace. A bulk of the narrative is occupied by the petty domestic skirmishes sparked off by Prithviraj’s union with Kannauj princess Sanyogita. Manushi Chhillar, in her Bollywood debut, spends the first hour expectantly waiting for her ‘king’, and then bats for women’s rights in the Ajmer court. Her clashes with an in-house sarpanch recall a similar plot device in Jodha Akbar (2008), though, unlike that film, there’s no palpable chemistry between the leads. Towards the end, when news arrives the Rajput side has been ambushed and captured, Sanyogita, with fiery self-assurance, leads several women into Jauhar (self-immolation). So much for equal rights.
Akshay plays Prithviraj with the same relaxed nobility of his social-issue films. There is better camaraderie between Sanjay Dutt and the other warriors than when Prithviraj is around. Sonu Sood, his eyes getting redder by the scene, is never dull. And whoever thought of casting Manoj Joshi as a scheming go-between deserves praise. The production design and set extensions are impressive, though DOP Manush Nandan’s same compositions and angles have a stultifying effect. At one point, briefly, the action shifts to Kannauj (in present-day UP), and the difference in architecture and clothing is hard to tell. In the final scene, as Prithviraj’s body is carried away in an orange robe, the spectators in the Afghan amphitheatre start chanting his name, shouting ‘Zindabad’. Exhibit A. Then, a title card appears on a black screen, informing that Prithviraj’s slaying by Ghori banished 755 years of Hindu rule in North India. Exhibit B. Combine both exhibits, and you get Yash Raj Studios trying to survive in the polarised climate of 2022.

Before we start - a big *FUCK YOU* to the story of giving us a "full length, uninterrupted flashback" pretty much from the start right up until the ending, very final twist (which you knew was going to come, because there has to be something at the end of the flashback).
The movie won't win any awards, probably (or, well, didn't I guess, since it came out 4 years ago), but it isn't as bad as the hero-happy critics claim it is (of course they'd be disappointed - this movie lacks the traditional star power in all aspects).
It's not perfect, of course - the first half drags, what with them focusing on trying to get two love stories set up (one in the traditional, meet/greet with song; the other, over the course of a single song); the court scenes can't decide if they're supposed to be serious (which I think they should've been) or funny (I mean, you've hired Manoj Joshi, Akhilendra Mishra, and Manoj Pahwa as the main actors for these scenes - and Joshi and Pahwa, at least, as much more of guys you usually bring around for some comic relief), and as a result, we're kinda left in limbo where a bunch of serious stuff is inter-cut by (probably intentional, but unnecessary) comedy - the scene with the paan, some of the 'objections,' etc. Plus, that fucking annoying Bollywood favorite of "start the movie at the ending and then tell essentially the entire story in flashback" - a completely pathetic way to tell pretty much any story, especially when you're giving away the ending (well, maybe not the final twist, but by that point, you're just so annoyed by the story-telling method that you know one more twist has to come, and there isn't many possibilities for that).
The story, though, goes pretty well once you get past the initial stagnation and get into the actual mystery. It maybe has some shades of Shutter Island/Vodka Diaries, but more, once you know the ending, it sort of feels like it got some inspiration from the pretty much known 2007 'skin flick' Red Swastik - not necessarily in the how/why, but in the basic premise of the story at least. And I can't complain about that, because even when I saw Red Swastik, in my mind (and whatever blog I had at that time), I'm pretty sure I said something to the effect of "if they focused more on the story and less on the 'skin show' (which was all the rage back then, because it was new), this could be a hell of a story."
It sorta feels the same way here - I know that they had to give some effort to introduce our characters and create a sort of relationship between them, but it somehow both dragged on way too long and didn't really feel very authentic.
But, towards the end, when those twists come - and when you're finally there, they come in quick, quick succession - they're pretty well done. Maybe not entirely out of the blue, but it's still well played. And then you think back and realize that aside from him, and her, you never see anyone actually interacting with them. Any of them. So kudos for whomever came up with the story and saw the execution through.
Them, deciding to use him and being completely heartless about it because he might have a condition - that's very heartless. Their celebrating at the end seems a bit in poor taste. Which, I mean, they concocted this whole scheme so maybe 'poor taste' isn't shocking for them, but still ... yikes. And her, thinking that after admitting everything, this man - who we've seen over and over again lose his temper, violently, at the drop of a hate - would just be like "it's all good" suggests that even while participating in everything, she was completely blind to everything happening around her. Driven blind by revenge, or whatever.
If she's decided she's going to use him, which she clearly did, then she needed to make a clean break after the fact. Going back - that was a mistake. Of course, using him in the first place to carry out your mission was also completely evil. Poor guy was living his life unassumingly and then you came and robbed him of it all.
His anger issues - trust me, I have anger issues and I understand, but ... yikes. How quickly he turns to physical violence is insane - of course, that's probably part of the reason she figured he was the right man for the job. She needed someone who would act first, ask questions later.
It's not an excellent movie - it has plenty of flaws: see above, and also most of the songs. But the acting is pretty good; the story (well, the crux of it, if you skim off the pointless stuff around the edges and the stupid 'everything in flashback' storytelling method) is well-done, albeit very slow, especially initially; and they do a pretty good job of trying to build up the suspense.
It'll (mostly) do.

Review: Parents are always expected to work hard to present a better or a comfortable life to their children. But how acceptable is when children take up the responsibility to better the lives of their parents? Such an unusual yet interesting question is explored in Sudesh Manjrekar’s Kutumb. The characters and some of the events surely succeed in moving the audience but due to the writing and execution (in some parts), the film turns out to be just a one-time watch.
During the initial moments, the writers and the director use the visual medium very intelligently. The nature of the four characters, the love between them, their problems and their everyday life is described without much use of dialogues. And once Siddharth Jadhav’s character is introduced, the proceedings get a booster. But there was no need to include two songs without any gap to prove the dancing skills of the two kids. Despite that, the first half manages to lay a decent foundation.
Kutumb Marathi Movie 2006 Watch
The events that follow are appealing alright. But now the film starts treading on predictable lines. An over-emotional scene (not possible to reveal more), involving one of the main characters, appears silly. But what hurts the most is how the audience is made to watch a dance reality show for a long duration later on. The pre-climax and the climax should have been framed in a way that it gets the audience rooting for the kids.
A very interesting fact is observed in a number of Mahesh Manjrekar’s films including Kutumb. The main protagonist receives tremendous help from a supporting character who is Muslim by religion. Apart from Kutumb (where Jadhav plays Joshi’s friend), this is seen in his earlier films Kurukshetra, Viruddh, Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi!, Mee Shivajiraje Bhosale Boltoy and Shikshanachya Aaicha Gho. Co-incidentally, in three of the six films mentioned, Jadhav has played the concerned character.
Technical aspects like cinematography (Ajith Reddy) and background score can be included in the plus points. The editing is fine but it should have been tighter during the dance reality show scenes. Ajit-Sameer and Abhijit Kawthalkar’s music suits the film. Dialogues (Pravin Tarde) are effective and moving.
The performance area is the biggest plus point. Jitendra Joshi is brilliant as he pours his heart out while playing a caring father and husband. He is on a roll this year. Vena Janmkar too gets into the skin of her character with perfection and presents a realistic act. Gauri Ingawale and Mihir Soni deserve huge applause for not only giving mature performances but also showing some terrific dancing skills.
Siddharth Jadhav presents a lovable act. Manasi Naik is likable too. Vaibhav Mangale plays the bad guy well while Bhalchandra Kadam, his sidekick, is not bad either.
Overall, Kutumb can be seen once if you prefer emotional family dramas. The film will need positive word-of-mouth to succeed at the box-office. It will face opposition from next week’s awaited No Entry Pudhe Dhoka Aahey.
