July 24th and 25th - Typhoon Gaemi
My cough still will not go away. Other than that, all is well. The last two days were quite eventful. We had our first typhoon experience (also probably my last). The typhoon was supposed to hit us dead on, but at the last minute it turned South and ended up hitting closer to Hualien. This was extremely lucky because the typhoon got very strong and had some disastrous consequences for the areas that got hit. We were supposed to travel to Hualien on the 25th, but due to the typhoon, we had to shelter in place, so we will not be able to do any of the scheduled activities we had for Yilan or Hualien. The typhoon did not have much of an impact on us. I thought it was going to be very scary and we would at least lose power, but it was just some heavy wind and rain. The power stayed on the whole time and we ended up having a “typhoon party.” We played uno with a bunch of the girls and then we tried to convince the guys to get us McDonald’s. We succeeded, but unfortunately when they walked all the way over there, the McDonald’s was closed. Other than that, it’s been pretty boring to be stuck in the hotel. I got caught up on some homework and sleep, but I’m ready to start the activities again. We officially have two weeks left in the trip and I’m excited to see what the end brings us.
Academic Reflection
Typhoon Gaemi was the most powerful storm to hit Taiwan in the last 8 years. With gusts of 150 mph, it was equivalent to a category 4 hurricane. News sources differ, but according to my research at least 2 people have died and 279 have been injured. 72 were injured in Kaohsiung, 43 in Tainan, 32 in Taichung, and 32 in Hualien. It also caused major flooding and landslides. The typhoon also shocked meteorologists by looping back around and hitting Taiwan’s east coast twice. This is because of Taiwan’s large mountain range that deflected the storm back towards the coast, which had terrible effects for the coastal towns that were in the path. One other disastrous consequence was the oil ship that capsized due to the Typhoon. The MT Terra Nova sank in the Manila Bay carrying 1.5 million liters of oil. This could be the worst oil spill in Philippines history if it is not contained. Not only will the oil spill be terrible for the marine life in the area, but the nine crew members on board still have not been located. This typhoon was a tragedy for the Philippines and Taiwan and we are very lucky that its path deviated before hitting us.

Where to Find the South Sea Pearl in Manila

Seda Manila Bay: Best Staycation Hotel In Parañaque City, Philippines
Hey, ka-TakeOff Buddies! It's Miyo here, and welcome to another exciting segment of Hotel Experience! This time, I had the pleasure of spending a relaxing weekend at Seda Manila Bay in Aseana City, Parañaque, and boy, did this hotel impress me. From its spacious infinity pool and brand-new fitness gym to the fun mini golf and cozy cabana beds, this staycation was just what I needed to recharge.
Tumblr media
Let me tell you all about my wonderful experience at Seda Manila Bay!
A Perfect Staycation Spot in Entertainment City
I’ve always been a fan of Seda Properties. Whether it’s Seda Makati, BGC, or Ayala Center Cebu, Seda has consistently been my go-to for out-of-town staycations. And Seda Manila Bay did not disappoint!
Tumblr media
Seda Manila Bay is a 4-star hotel featuring 350 rooms, including deluxe, premier, family suites, and club suites. What's great about Seda Hotels is their strategic locations.
This one is situated near Ayala Malls Manila Bay and only a 20-minute drive from NAIA, making it ideal for leisure, family, and business travel. The hotel beautifully combines both business and recreational facilities.
My Room with a City View
Our room was located on the 8th floor, and let me tell you, the city view was just perfect. The bed? Super comfy!
Tumblr media
It felt like the mattress was hugging me, and I didn't want to get up the next morning—so soft, you just sink right into it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Infinity Pool, Fitness Gym, and More Fun Activities
One of my favorite spots in the hotel was the Infinity Pool located on the 5th floor. It’s the biggest pool I’ve seen at any Seda property!
Tumblr media
You can take an early dip at 6 AM, and there are fun water activities for the kids. Huge shout-out to the lifeguards, who were actively making sure everyone was safe.
Tumblr media
The pool is 4.2 feet deep, so if you're planning a dive, better rethink it. But it's perfect for casual swimming and family fun.
Tumblr media
Next on the list? The Fitness Gym. The equipment is still new, and it's a great way to stay active during your staycation.
Tumblr media
For the little ones, there’s a Play Room, and for teens (or the young at heart), there’s a Game Room with indoor sports like PlayStation and Xbox, plus a computer station for browsing.
Unique Discovery: Mini Golf and Cabana Beds
Here’s a unique feature I didn’t expect—Mini Golf inside the hotel! Open 24/7, all you need to do is ask the receptionist for a golf club and ball, and you're set for some classy fun.
Tumblr media
After a round of golf, unwind at the Cabana Beds, perfect for early morning meditation or just relaxing in the stillness of the evening.
For Business Travelers
If you're traveling for business, Seda Manila Bay has you covered. The Club Lounge is the perfect space for meetings or a quiet spot to get some work done. It's ideal for a business trip or even casual work during your vacation.
Tumblr media
Misto Restaurant Review
The next morning, we had our complimentary breakfast at Misto, Seda’s all-day dining restaurant. The buffet offered a good mix of international dishes and local favorites, but if I had to rate it, I’d give it a 3 out of 5. The staff was super accommodating, but I think the menu could use a bit more variety and reinvention.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prime Location – Mall-Hopping Time!
What’s also great about Seda Manila Bay is its proximity to nearby malls:
Ayala Malls Manila Bay
Parqal Mall
SM Mall of Asia
So if you’re in the mood for some shopping, you won’t have to travel far!
As our staycation came to an end, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of emotions—sad that it was over but excited about closing the month with a wonderful partnership with Seda Manila Bay. This hotel truly lives up to its reputation of delivering excellent service and unforgettable experiences.
Like the hashtags say, #ThereIsNothingLikeSeda and #FilipinoHospitality are alive and well at #SedaManilaBay.
If you're planning your next staycation in Manila, I highly recommend checking out Seda Manila Bay. The room rates start at PHP 6,500, and you can visit their website to book your stay.
Until our next hotel experience, mga ka-TakeOff Buddies! ✨

BALITANG NASYONAL: 'BAN Toxics' calls Strict Regulations Against Unregistered Repellents amid crisis of Dengue in the Philippines
Tumblr media
MANDALUYONG, MANILA -- The rainy season approaches earlier than usual in the Philippines, so does the threat of dengue fever, more so than ever. With the Department of Health (DOH) citing a whopping 33% increase in dengue cases from January 1 to August 3, 2024; compared with the same period last year, somewhere in 2023, the need for effective measures of mosquito control couldn't be any more pressing. And while most Filipinos strive to combat these disease-infested pests, they might actually be exposing themselves to another pest that no one was talking about it. An unregistered mosquito coils and household insecticides contains harmful chemicals.
Mosquito coils are among the most utilized household items in many households across this said country. These products, made of a mixture of synthetic chemicals and plant-based materials, are to repel or kill mosquitoes at the time they are lit up using stove-top burner or pocket light, and start burning off. The coils are said to last for about 8 hours during the day or night, and are known to emit insecticides and particulate matter-containing smoke.
While they are a cheap remedy to prevent mosquito bites, the health risks associated with using mosquito coils are alarming. In repellent health, the non-government and environmental organization 'BAN Toxics' obtained the investigation to OneNETnews that a single mosquito coil burning can emit particulate matter equal to smoke of 75 to 137 cigarette sticks in the adult life, besides levels of formaldehyde from burning 51 cigarette sticks.
The health implications associated with using these products are enormous. Long-term exposure to fumes emanated by the smoke from mosquito coils has been related to a variety of acute and chronic health effects, such as respiratory problems, asthma, and even lung cancer, that may be considered as warning sign. In Taiwan, it has been established that fumes from mosquito coils are responsible for 50% of lung cancer cases. Meanwhile, the Food and Drug Administration and the DOH have advisories against the use of unregistered household urban pesticides that contain toxic and banned active ingredients, which may present imminent dangers to human health. Lion-Tiger and Baygon, in their legitimate registered products, will have nothing to fear there and they are subject to regulation checks by the Philippines' FDA.
This is compounded by a proliferation of unregistered products in the market. Most manufacturers declare less content of active ingredients in the package than what is actually contained, leading to a health risk, especially in children who are sensitive to toxic exposure. The FDA, therefore, in as much as it has been regulating the importation and exportation of mosquito coils, has been found to be a lesser effective body as far as protecting public health is concerned.
On account of these, BAN Toxics is recommending that people be more proactive in managing mosquito bites while, at the same time, trying to reduce their exposure to harmful chemicals by shifting to organic mosquito coils and to bioinsecticides from natural sources and are thus less likely to be hazardous to health. They advise that botanicals, specifically neem, citronella, papaya leaves, garlic and lemongrass, are a safer route towards keeping mosquitoes at bay.
The organization further raises awareness about the need to check whether a pesticide product is registered with the FDA before its use. Aside from that, they also raised awareness in a detailed manner with the public and post-market surveillance to ensure that harmful products do not reach the consumers bought in supermarkets, groceries, convenience stores or sari-sari stores. They urge local government units to conduct a recall of violative products and to prevent continued selling in the market.
As the projected dengue outbreak rises, notably Iloilo and among others, it is hoped Filipinos become aggressive not only with mosquito bites but also with their fight against them through products they put in their houses. The fight against dengue should not come in with the cost of introducing another health hazard.
It will be possible to protect ourselves and our families from hidden dangers, such as unregistered mosquito coils and insecticides, with informed choices and safer alternatives in use.

2035 7Aug24: Chapter 220
Rest before therapy.
Who am I kidding?!?!?!
I went for a two mile walk last night and then a two mile walk tonight. I am trying to make being active a priority again in my life. During the walk I see they are starting to do some construction at our pier in town. They are adding land into Manila Bay. I understand some reasoning for this, but I also heard rumors and those rumors are bad.
Rumors can and almost always are bad until truth comes out. The rumor is that the Mayor pushed for this project which will add land to the town of Orion. As well as provide stable jobs for some during the project as it will take quite a few people to achieve the mayor's goal. Now for the problem side I am seeing.
Adding land to water is always tricky as water will erode away the fresh dirt that was placed and it's just a matter of when. So if they go and do all this and then start building properties on there those houses may survive for a while but a big storm comes through we will have issues if the land is not placed properly. Now to take a dark twist... adding all this land is actually going to evict a bunch of basically squatters that built their shacks along the bay and make a living by being the local fishermen. The mayor doesn't like them there as some of them are right behind his house. Back I'm like 2016 there was a huge fire in Orion that displaced around 300 families... all basically squatters and the claim was that the fire was set by kids playing with fire.. I honestly think someone was paid to go start a fire because the officials didn't like them there... since they came back now all of a sudden we are adding land and adding this will cut these squatters from their access to the bay forcing them to move their houses.
Boom mayor wins.
Hmm crazy de ba?

Culture Fact File
Tumblr media
(A view of the Manila Bay)
Here are some fascinating facts about my Filipino culture, which is shaped by a blend of indigenous traditions, Spanish influences, and modern Western elements:
1. Bayanihan Spirit: The concept of bayanihan is deeply rooted in Filipino culture and represents a spirit of communal unity and cooperation. Traditionally, it refers to neighbors helping to physically move a house by carrying it on bamboo poles, symbolizing helping one another without expecting anything in return.
2. Fiestas and Festivals: Filipinos celebrate numerous fiestas (festivals) throughout the year to honor patron saints and celebrate local heritage. Some of the most popular ones include the Sinulog Festival in Cebu, the Ati-Atihan Festival in Aklan, and the Pahiyas Festival in Quezon, known for their vibrant parades, costumes, and street dances.
3. Catholic Influence: The Philippines is the only predominantly Catholic country in Asia, a legacy of Spanish colonization. About 80% of Filipinos identify as Catholic, and the faith plays a significant role in everyday life, including events like baptisms, fiestas, and processions.
4. Balikbayan Boxes: Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) often send balikbayan boxes filled with gifts, clothing, and food to their families back home. These boxes symbolize care and love from abroad and are eagerly awaited by Filipino families.
5. Pamamanhikan: In traditional Filipino culture, pamamanhikan is the custom where a man and his family formally ask for a woman’s hand in marriage. This is typically followed by a meal where both families discuss wedding arrangements and get to know each other.
6. Pasalubong: Pasalubong are small gifts or souvenirs brought home by travelers for friends and family. It’s a way to show thoughtfulness and share a part of one’s journey with loved ones.
7. Strong Family Ties: Family is the cornerstone of Filipino culture. It’s common for extended families to live together or nearby, with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins playing active roles in each other’s lives. Filipino families are known for their close-knit relationships and mutual support.
8. Love for Karaoke: Karaoke is a national pastime in the Philippines, with many Filipinos owning karaoke machines at home. Singing karaoke is a popular form of entertainment during family gatherings, parties, and even public events.
9. Filipino Hospitality: Filipinos are famous for their warm hospitality, often going out of their way to make guests feel comfortable. It’s common to be offered food, drinks, and even a place to stay if you’re visiting a Filipino home, with hosts often saying, “Feel at home.”
10. Respect for Nature and Spiritual Beliefs: Many Filipinos, especially in rural areas, hold animistic beliefs and respect nature spirits known as anitos. These beliefs are mixed with Catholic traditions, with some families still offering rituals or prayers to respect and appease nature.
Filipino culture is a beautiful blend of community spirit, respect for elders, religious devotion, and a love for family and hospitality.

US Marine Corps MQ-9A Reapers Begin Strategic Deployment to Philippines Amid Rising South China Sea Tensions
The U.S. Marine Corps has commenced the deployment of MQ-9A Reaper drones to the Philippines. Operating from Basa Air Base, these unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) mark a new phase in the cooperative defense efforts between the U.S. and the Philippines, particularly in the context of increasing Chinese assertiveness in the South China Sea. The deployment, confirmed by the I Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF), comes at the behest of Manila and serves to enhance intelligence-sharing operations under the auspices of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. USNI News reported that the Marine Corps will employ unarmed MQ-9As to provide reconnaissance and surveillance in support of the development of intelligence sharing between the U.S. and our Philippine allies and in accordance with Philippine national laws, rules, and regulations. While the MQ-9As are temporarily stationed in the Philippines, adhering to the country’s 1987 constitution that forbids permanent foreign military bases, the rotational deployment is allowed under the 2014 Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA). This agreement facilitates the ongoing presence of U.S. military assets on a rotational basis, enabling joint operations and infrastructure upgrades. The MQ-9A Reapers, initially stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, achieved initial operational capability last summer with Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 3 (VMU-3). This deployment to the Philippines represents their first overseas mission, highlighting their role in supporting maritime domain awareness and surveillance activities, especially in contested regions such as the South China Sea. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak #Philippine #usmc #marinecorps

Next Stop…The Mall of Southies
Located along the busy Alabang-Zapote Road in Las Piñas, SM Southmall, opened its doors in 1995. It's part of the SM Supermalls chain, which is one of the largest mall operators in the Philippines. SM Southmall currently ranks as the 7th largest SM mall in the country and it is the second mall to feature an ice-skating rink after SM Megamall. For over 29 years, it has been the go-to retail and lifestyle hub in the south. In fact, the mall was also the first SM Supermall in the southern part of Manila so there's a lot of history and stories associated with the establishment.
Over the years, SM Southmall has undergone expansions and renovations to meet the evolving needs and preferences of shoppers. Today, it stands as a prominent shopping destination in the south of Metro Manila, offering a wide range of retail, dining, and entertainment options.

It’s Community Friendly
SM Southmall's design was inspired by the concept of a tropical paradise, with lush landscaping, water features, and open spaces giving it a resort-like ambiance. Since its opening, SM Southmall has undergone several expansions to accommodate more stores and amenities, including the addition of a spacious food court and more parking spaces. Moreover, the mall is home to major anchor tenants that offer and satisfy our needs and wants. SM Southmall features SM Supermarket, SM Department Store, and other necessary and opulent stores to make shopping convenient for its devoted customers, whether they are searching for groceries or branded stores.
In addition, the mall often arranges concerts, community events, and other activities to interact with its customers and enhance the liveliness of the neighborhood. Its prime position in Las Piñas allows it to be conveniently accessed by major thoroughfares and public transportation, catering to the needs of both local and foreign consumers and visitors. Everyone is welcome!
The Fun Side
For those who seek exciting date ideas to cherish with their friends, families, or loved ones, SM Southmall's entertainment complex features a bowling alley, arcade, and cinemas. Another alternative is SM skating, which seeks to provide everyone with an enjoyable, leisurely time on the ice and avenues for training in ice sports (ice hockey, figure skating, speed skating, and other skating). If you like something uncommon and are looking for something new to try, SM skating is another possibility. Finally, some of the most memorable experiences of 2000s youth were also cherished by those who visited Storyland at SM Southmall. Storyland l is one giant liminal space full of nostalgic few grownups who had the opportunity to experience the famous roller coaster "Silver Streak" and had some amazing, joyous moments with the amazing track. The tragic closure of SM Storyland amusement park in May 2011 was a result of renovation. Nonetheless, a few of its rides and attractions have been moved to the Mall of Asia Complex's SM By the Bay Amusement Park.
With a wide variety of stores meeting every Southern’s  lifestyle needs, it's safe to say that SM Southmall has developed into the South's leading urban lifestyle center. SM Southmall has you covered, whether you're a foodie on the market for the newest dish or a weekend warrior searching for cutting-edge, high-performance gear especially if you're the kind of smart shopper who patiently waits for amazing discounts.
At SM Southmall, one of the recommended SM malls in the South, you can satisfy all of your lifestyle needs. Whatever you're in the mood for, this massive one-stop place has everything you need, with amazing prices to top it off. It got it all for you!

PHILIPPINES
DAY ONE
When traveling to the Philippines, you do not need to have a visa, unless you are staying for longer than 3 months. The most popular months that tourist visit is April, because May-October is the peak travelling season for Europe. There are 7,641 Islands comprising the Philippines, and stretches 300,000 square kilometers. The Philippines has a very tropical and maritime climate. The average temperature during the summer is 82 °F, and the average temperature in the winter is 71 °F. People recommend packing sunscreen, water, lightweight clothing, and Pepto-Bismol. People also recommend bringing a translation book because the official language is Filipino.
The place I chose to stay at in the Philippines is The Anahaw Cabin, located in Tanauan, an hour drive away from the capital of Manilla. The cabin costs $106 per night, but Philippines use the Philippines peso, making it ₱ 6121.71. I was only staying one night because I missed my home in America, so my total was ₱ 6121.71 before taxes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first thing I decided to do in the Philippines is visit Fort Santiago. Built by Spaniards in 1571, Fort Santiago has a perimeter of 2,030 feet and is located along the Pasig River in Manilla. The entrance fee is ₱ 75 ($1.30). Spain ruled over the Philippines from 1565 to 1821. Spain brought over their laws, literature, and religion into the Philippines, but Filipino people have been able to build up their own culture since Spain left. 79.5% of people in the Philippines are Roman Catholic, and another 9% belong to other branches of Christianity. This is one thing that had stayed from Spain's control.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After visiting Fort Santiago, I went to Manila Ocean Park. Admissions into the park are ₱ 680 ($11.77) and that gives you access to the entire place. Manila Ocean Park has many special events you can watch, they have an all star bird show, a sea lion show, and a penguin feeding. All of their events are at the same time, so you have to pick just one you would like to go to. I chose to do the penguin feeding because it seems the most fun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After ocean park, I decided to get something to eat. I got the unofficial national dish of the Philippines, adobo. Adobo is marinated meat, garlic, soy sauce, black pepper, and bay leaves on top of rice. People usually use chicken or pork for their adobo, but you can also get squid, fish, or vegetables. Adobo is a dish that comes from Portugal and Spain. I wanted to try the national drink of the Philippines to wash down my meal, but their national drink is San Miguel Beer, meaning I could not drink it. The legal drinking age in the Philippines is 18, but I am only 17. After my meal, I wanted to get dessert. The unofficial national dessert of the Philippines is halo-halo. Halo-halo is layers of shaved ice and condensed milk. It is like ice cream, meaning you can get it in many flavors. Halo-halo translates to “mix-mix” in Tagalog, a variety of Filipino dialect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
DAY TWO
Today I was leaving the Philippines after my very short visit. Even though I only stayed one day here, I feel as if I learned a ton about the history of the Philippines and what to expect when I travel here again in the future. I did enjoy the activities I went on, and the food was amazing. I liked the food more than the food in Mongolia.

Philstar: SMC urged to withdraw permit applications for PAREX, halt other expressway plans
Environmental, heritage and mobility advocates called on the San Miguel Corporation (SMC) to scrap its toll deal and environmental permit application for the planned Pasig River Expressway (PAREX) after the conglomerate’s chief announced the project is no longer pushing through.
The Ilog Pasiglahin movement welcomed the statement of SMC President and CEO Ramon Ang that his company is abandoning plans for the 19-kilometer elevated expressway.
Ang said that public opposition led the conglomerate to drop the project pitched as a solution to address the traffic congestion in Metro Manila.
To formally cancel the project, the Ilog Pasiglahin movement demanded the SMC to revoke the expressway’s Supplemental Toll Operation Agreement (STOA) with the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB).
It added that the conglomerate should withdraw their Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) application with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), and scrap their permit applications and resolutions with local governments.
Advocates pointed out that these proposed expressways [Southeast Metro Manila Expressway (SEMME) and Southern Access Link Expressway (SALEX)], if continued without modification, “will also bring the same disastrous impacts of PAREX” to the environment, heritage structures, and local communities.
“Whatever happens to the Pasig River also affects its connected bodies of water—Manila Bay, Laguna de Bay, Marikina River, San Juan River, Taguig River, and many others. And any destructive activity in those areas–reclamation, deforestation, and expressway construction–will also affect the Pasig River,” Ilog Pasiglahin said.
Ilog Pasiglahin also called on the government to issue policies disallowing river and coastal expressways as well as to review current projects such as the SALEX, SEMME, and the C5 Southlink Expressway, also known as the Marikina River Expressway.
