V. & Vineland, Thomas Pynchon

With a big ass pretentious Pynchon project percolatin’ on the back burner, I won't spend too much time discussing these novels here, neither of which I had read before. Maybe this will come up again in that project, but these two novels are interesting to compare because V. is emphatically "pre-feminist" Pynchon, with the women all serving merely opposite the men, femininity at times equated with the novel's bête noire "inanimacy," while Vineland seems to be explicitly engaged with feminism and feminine subjectivity. I wouldn't read Pynchon for his gender politics, though, even if I might defend him as a critic of phallocentricism and masculinity.

Dept. of Speculation, Jenny Offill

I was surprised by how expansive this slim novel (novella?) is. While not like, superb or totally mind-blowing, I think Dept. of Speculation does what the best autofiction is capable of doing, ie wring art from the banality of lived existence. There's real force and emotional sweep to the relationships depicted here, and Offill peppers her text with enough insights and bon mots to carry my bitchy ass through a tale of bourgeois anxieties. Sometimes I think I'm being hypocritical when I criticize a strain of literature concerned primarily with comfortable middle-class life, since 1) I live fairly comfortably middle class and 2) all artists are by definition bourgeois, but I refuse to believe that necessarily means Iowa-style fiction of the mundane is somehow the best we can hope for from our literature. Anyway, that's not really a complaint about this novel, which I quite liked.

“Manfred,” Lord Byron

Rereading this dramatic poem, I've come to agree with Ezra Pound who said that when reading a poem by Byron, you're liable to find at least seven serious flaws. Byron's work is important for the affect it expresses; his language is often prettily rendered but rarely very innovative. This poem does however contain these lines, which are imprinted onto my heart:

She was like me in lineaments -- her eyes, Her hair, her features, all, to the very tone Even of her voice, they said were like to mine; But soften'd all, and temper'd into beauty; She had the same lone thoughts and wanderings, The quest of hidden knowledge, and a mind To comprehend the universe: nor these Alone, but with them gentler powers than mine, Pity, and smiles, and tears -- which I had not; And tenderness -- but that I had for her; Humility -- and that I never had. Her faults were mine -- her virtues were her own-- I loved her, and destroy'd her!

The Lichtenberg Figures, Ben Lerner

I read this a few years ago and remembered enjoying it, so I spent an hour or so rereading these sonnets while at work. Again, I enjoyed it, and I think Lerner does some interesting things with form and repetition through the cycle that warrant attention, and I'm certain this is better than any of the novels he's written, which I have no interest in reading, but ultimately I already basically forgot what the poems say, which may honestly reflect more on my inability to retain information that on any flaw in the work. They're good, I suggest reading them, but maybe don't go out of your way.

Maldoror, Comte de Lautréamont

I quit reading this a little over halfway through because I felt like I "got" whatever I could get from reading this stream of amoral insanity translated from the French. Don't let me quitting on it reflect poorly on the work, I just didn't feel like I could get inside what's really happening in the text without reading it in French, because otherwise it's just an approximation of surreal images strung together in strangely constructed English. Probably should have kept reading until at least the famous scene where Maldoror kills a turtle by decorating its shell too extravagantly, but oh well there's too much to read, sorry Maldy.

ABC of Reading & Selected Poems, Ezra Pound

Ezra Pound was at least two things: the most important poet writing in English in the 20th century, and a latterly repentant fascist antisemite. The poems are unimpeachable: his antisemitism is less apparent in his work than Eliot's was in his (or even, for that matter, like, Hemingway's and Fitzgerald's), but people usually seem content to write him off because he was a vocal supporter of Mussolini. Pound says you know a bad critic when they spend their time talking about the writer and not the writing, and like with a lot of what Pound said, I mostly agree. My poor education requires me to defensively critique Pound's belief that you can't even learn to read if you only read English, but his extreme snobbishness and rigorous standards are often missing among the contemporary literati. I want to see more of it without it being saddled with the idiosyncratic fascism of an intensely bourgeois American.

There are three kinds of Pound poems: those written in idiomatic American English, a kind of modernist version of Emily Dickinson or Walt Whitman, or William Carlos Williams but cosmopolitan--these are my favorites of his, because I'm too stupid to really understand the second kind, the High Modernist lyrics historicizing and stuffed with multiple languages, Chinese ideograms and allusions that fly about 17 miles over my head. The third kind is his translations, which admittedly I skipped over for no real reason other than I felt like it. If I weren't already working through reading all of Pynchon this year, I'd dive into the Cantos soon. I might still, stay tuned.

Toni Morrison – Jazz

Eine ausgelassene Party in Harlem, 1926. Plötzlich wird die feiernde Schar von einem Schuss aufgeschreckt, der die junge Dorcas niederstreckt und tötet. Der Täter ist bekannt: Joe Spur, ihr 50-jähriger Geliebter. Dorcas wird beerdigt, dabei kommt es zum Eklat, als Violet, Joes Frau, den Gottesdienst stört. Gerechtigkeit gibt es nicht, Polizei will man nicht und Dorcas kann eh niemand wieder lebendig machen. Das Leben in Harlem geht weiter. Doch wie soll es weitergehen für Joe, der Dorcas noch immer liebt; für Violet, die man nun Violent nennt und die sich fragt, was Joe an dem Mädchen fand; für Dorcas‘ Tante Alice Manfred, die sie großgezogen hat und für ihre Freundin, die die sich anbahnende Liebelei beobachtete. Harlem Mitte der 1920er Jahre folgt seinen eigenen Gesetzen und die führen die Menschen bisweilen auf ungeahnte Wege.

 „Jazz“ ist Toni Morrisons zweiter Roman der sogenannten „Beloved“ Trilogie, für den ersten Band hatte sie 1988 den Pulitzer Preis gewonnen. Wie sich unschwer am Titel erkennen lässt, spielt die Handlung im schwarze Harlem der Jazz-Ära, jedoch erschafft Morrison eine ganz andere Atmosphäre als die der Roaring Twenties, wie sie von weißen Autoren wie F. Scott Fitzgerald oder Edith Wharton beschrieben werden. Es ist nicht die Zeit des ausgelassenen Feierns mit Frauen in exquisiten Kleidern, sondern der alltägliche Kampf ums Überleben:

 „Jede Woche seit Dorcas' Tod, den ganzen Januar und Februar hindurch, legte irgendeine Zeitung die Knochen einer gebrochenen Frau frei. Mann tötet Frau. Acht der Vergewaltigung angeklagte Männer freigesprochen. Frau und Mädchen Opfer von. Frau begeht Selbstmord. Weiße Angreifer angeklagt. Fünf Frauen festgehalten. Frau sagt, Ehemann prügelt sie. In eifersüchtiger Wut hat ein Mann. Wehrlos wie Federvieh, dachte sie. Oder doch nicht?”

 Morrison schildert aus abwechselnden Perspektiven die Vorgänge in der Lenox Avenue. Die großen Hoffnungen, die Violet und Joe einst in die Stadt geführt haben, wo das Leben so viel einfacher sein sollte als das Dasein als Sklave auf den Feldern der Plantagenbesitzer. Die Enttäuschungen darüber, auch in New York als Schwarze nur Menschen zweiter Klasse zu sein. Die feinen Unterschiede, die durch die Nuancen der Hautfarbe bedingt sind – es ist eine eigene Welt, die nach ihren eigenen Regeln funktioniert.

 „Als wir von der 140th Street in eine größere Wohnung in der Lenox zogen, da haben die hellhäutigeren Mieter versucht, uns draußen zu halten. Ich und Violet haben gegen sie gekämpft, als wenn es Weiße gewesen wären. Und wir blieben Sieger. Es waren schlechte Zeiten, und weiße wie schwarze Vermieter haben sich um die Farbigen geschlagen wegen den hohen Mieten, die für uns in Ordnung waren (...)“

 Morrison legt den Finger in die Wunde und riss mit ihrem historischen Roman Anfang der 1990er Jahre nochmal vieles auf, was noch lange nicht überwunden war und heute, mehr als 50 Jahre nach dem Civil Rights Movement und dem formalen Ende der Segregation, wieder infrage gestellt wird. Neben der brisanten Thematik besticht der Roman vor allem durch die Atmosphäre und die klare, geradezu nüchterne Sprache, mit der sie grausamste Situationen zu schildern weiß. Ein Roman, der wieder mehr ins Bewusstsein gerückt werden sollte, trotz oder vielleicht gerade wegen seines Alters von nunmehr fast 30 Jahren. Einziger Kritikpunkt ist eine Übersetzungsunsitte: die Namen wurden für die deutsche Ausgabe „angepasst“, was ich nicht nur überflüssig, sondern ärgerlich finde. Die Anspielung hätte durch eine Fußnote einfach gelöst werden können.

Challenges as Europe’s top jobs are filled

Ireland must do all it can to prevent being caught in Europe’s political slow lane as the leading contenders line up to run the EU and European Cental Bank, writes Kyran Fitzgerald.

Europe’s leaders have finally come up with the names of the people they would like to see filling the top jobs across the union for the next few years.

As far as Ireland is concerned, three of those jobs really matter: the presidency of the European Commission; the presidency of the Council of Ministers; and last but certainly not least, the presidency of the ECB.

It was clear for some time that the frontrunner for the commission job, the centre-right German MEP Manfred Weber had failed to gain sufficient traction. The baton for a while appeared to pass to the Dutch socialist Frans Timmermans, a straight-talking politician.

However, he was knocked off course by an alliance of rightist east European leaders and western European politicians from the centre-right European People’s Party, which includes Fine Gael.

Mr Timmermans had led the charge against the Hungarians and Poles over clampdowns on the opposition by their governments. Genesis G70 Will Debut September 15

Genesis is gearing up to launch what might be its most important vehicle to date: the G70. The compact sedan will serve as the new entry-level model in the Genesis lineup and will compete against the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. New teaser videos reveal the G70 will debut in Olympic Park in Seoul, South Korea, on September 15. “Normally you would go to an international motor show to do this, but we chose deliberately Seoul, as this is our place of origin,” Genesis chief Manfred Fitzgerald says in one of the videos. The sedan goes on sale here in the U.S. in early 2018.   The G70 is expected to share components with the rear-wheel-drive Kia Stinger. Right now, Genesis only has two vehicles in its stable. The larger G80 is based off the previous Hyundai Genesis while the G90 is the successor to the old Hyundai Equus. By the end of 2021, Genesis will have launched three sedans, three SUVs, a sports coupe, and a dedicated electric vehicle. The GV70 crossover will be based off the same platform as the G70 sedan.
