Thousands of doctors across major cities in India, including the capital, New Delhi, on Tuesday, joined in on protests sparked by the alleged rape and murder of a trainee last week.
A 31-year-old female medical trainee was found dead at one of the largest government hospitals in the eastern city of Kolkata on Friday. Her body sustained multiple injuries and an autopsy report described evidence of sexual violence.
After the incident, doctors walked off their jobs at government hospitals, demanding better security and safety measures for health workers. The chief of the institution involved, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, resigned on Monday.
Protests flare as doctors demand better safety
Protests picked up across government-run facilities in the eastern state of West Bengal, home to Kolkata, on Monday — with doctors saying they would suspend emergency services as well until at least Tuesday.
"As resident doctors, we are on the frontline and deal with lots of patients, which makes us quite vulnerable to these attacks," Doctor Rajat Sharma, vice president of India's Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA), told DW.
"It's a scary situation which we see working on a daily basis. Doctors in West Bengal are protesting for their rights. We want to have better security for our resident doctors."
Around 75% of doctors in India have faced some form of violence, according to a survey by the Indian Medical Association.
Sharma's FORDA colleague Sarvesh Pandey told Indian media that doctors' demands included a specialized law protecting healthcare workers from violence on the job.
"There should be stringent security measures in hospitals and CCTV cameras should be installed," he said.
Students at universities in Kolkata also joined in on protests, demanding better safety measures for women in particular.
Sexual violence against women is a big problem in India.
The National Crimes Records Bureau reported that in 2021, an average of 86 rape cases were registered every day and 49 cases of crime against women lodged every single hour.
Protests spread to major cities, some services hampered
The incident has struck a nerve in the medical community who have repeatedly said they face threats from angry family members, especially in the case of bad news involving medical issues.
In the western Maharashtra state, home to financial capital Mumbai, around 8,000 doctors at government hospitals walked off their jobs on Tuesday.
In New Delhi, junior doctors wearing white coats held banners that read "Doctors are not punching bags" as they sat outside a big government hospital to demand an investigation into the incident.
Protests hampered medical services in the city of Lucknow in the most populous state of Uttar Pradesh, as well as in the popular tourist state of Goa.
How have Indian authorities responded?
The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered the case to be transferred over to a federal agency, meaning that Kolkata police will have to submit all case documents to the agency.
Kolkata police initially set up a special investigative team and arrested a man in connection with the case.
City police chief Vineet Kumar Goyal told reporters a case had been registered against the suspect under provisions of the law relating to rape and murder.
The National Human Rights Commission on Tuesday sent notices to the director general of police and the chief secretary of West Bengal state, asking for a detailed report within two weeks.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met the family of the victim on Monday, telling reporters later that police were "giving utmost importance to the investigation."

Nabanna protest: Bengal minster Shashi Panja questions protesters asks do they look like students?
West Bengal Minister Shashi Panja criticised Tuesday’s march towards West Bengal secretariat Nabanna, questioning whether the protests were even led by students. Speaking with India Today TV about the protests, Shashi Panja said, “These should have been peaceful protests from the very beginning, and peaceful protests are more than welcome. But the agenda itself was nefarious, which was evident. The protesting junior doctors had already distanced themselves from that so-called banner of Chhatra Samaj.” “If you look at the visuals that are emerging, do these people look like students? Are they really seeking justice? Or were they trying to promote their own political agenda? Look at the vandalism,” she added. The ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ call was given by an unregistered student body ‘Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj’ and a dissident state government employees’ platform ‘Sangrami Joutha Mancha’ who demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the alleged rape-murder of a medic at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The protest march, however, turned violent as protestors took to incessant pelting of stones and glass bottles on the police at several spots. In response, the police resorted to lathi-charge, unleashed water cannons and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the aggressive crowd. Shashi Panja, who is the Minister of Women and Child Development in the state government, alleged that the opposition BJP was behind the protests. “You saw what videos emerged yesterday, which have now become viral. These BJP karyakartas were already saying that there should be dead bodies tomorrow… Everybody knows it was done at their behest,” she said. Shashi Panja said despite the aggression shown by protesters, the police showed “tremendous resilience, restraint and patience”. “You have seen that the police were attacked today and the police were not with any weapons. The least that they carried was a lathi and of course there were water cannons and tear gas,” she said. “Why were they (protesters) pelting stones? They were breaking the barricades too,” the minister added. Meanwhile, the BJP has called for a 12-hour general strike in West Bengal on Wednesday, from 6 am to 6 pm, to protest the police action against demonstrators who marched to the state secretariat, Nabanna. Silent Allies, Loud Slander: Is Hinduism Under Political Siege From I.N.D.I.A Bloc? - 12/9/2023
Navika Kumar leads a compelling debate centered on the incendiary comments made by DMK Leader A Raja, who not only likened Sanatan Dharma to stigmatized diseases like leprosy and HIV but also declared Hinduism a 'menace.' These remarks have ignited a political firestorm, with allegations that the I.N.D.I.A. Bloc may be harboring an agenda against Hinduism.
Gaurav Bhatia representing the BJP, alongside panelists Vivek Srivastava, Lokesh Jindal, and Pandit Satish Sharma, scrutinizes the implications of Raja's statements.
Meanwhile, the conspicuous silence of leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, and Nitish Kumar adds intrigue to the discussion. As alliances shift and condemnations remain muted, the program delves into the heart of a contentious issue.

261 Dead, 900 Injured After Horrific Three-Train Crash In Odisha
Coromandel Express Accident: The train was going from Howrah to Chennai, rammed into the derailed coaches of the other train, which was going from Bengaluru to Kolkata
Tumblr media
New Delhi: At least 261 people were killed and around 900 were injured in a horrific three-train collision in Odisha's Balasore, officials said Saturday, the country's deadliest rail accident in more than 20 years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the train accident site and meet with injured people at hospitals in Cuttack, his office tweeted.
The crash involved the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, and a goods train.
The accident saw one train ram so hard into another that carriages were lifted high into the air, twisting and then smashing off the tracks. Another carriage had been tossed entirely onto its roof, crushing the passenger section.
"Everything was shaking and we could feel the coach toppling," Sanjay Mukhia, a daily wage worker travelling to Chennai on the Coromandel-Shalimar Express, told NDTV, showing his injuries.
According to another survivor, severed limbs were scattered over the ripped metal wreckage.
"I was sleeping when the train derailed. Some 10-15 people fell over me. When I came out of the coach, I saw limbs scattered all around, a leg here, a hand there...someone's face was disfigured," the survivor said.
"The rescue operation has been completed and now the focus is on restoration work," Railways Spokesperson Amitabh Sharma said.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said a high-level committee will be set up to investigate the train crash.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has declared one-day state mourning in view of the horrific train crash.
Mr Vaishnaw has announced compensation of ₹ 10 lakh for the families of those who have died, ₹ 2 lakh for those seriously injured and ₹ 50,000 for those who sustained minor injuries in the accident.
PM Modi too expressed his distress over the accident, and announced a compensation of ₹ 2 lakh for the family of the dead and ₹ 50,000 for the injured from the PM's National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted she is monitoring the situation continually personally with the Chief Secretary and other senior officers.
48 trains have been cancelled, 39 diverted and 10 trains have been short terminated due to the accident, which happened on the Howrah-Chennai main line in the Kharagpur division of the South Eastern Railway.
