i don't think western leftists know or even care but vijay prashad is actually persona non grata on large parts of the indian left for being a party mouthpiece for the cpm. the party that fought and killed agricultural workers, farmers and activists for refusing to be displaced from their land to build a car factory for india's oldest capitalists - the tatas in singur. good place to start. he also lives in the west. assigning him authority to talk about a whole country is very dangerous.
tw: rape, political violence, murder under the cut
tapasi malik was an 18 year old woman who was raped and murdered by cpm cadre in singur. vijay prashad pointed to his own party newspaper as proof she was murdered by her father while the high court successfully convicted cpm people for the crime
#honestly i think there should be some kind of checklist before you claim familiarity with india#bhagat singh to dange to nandigram and singur and maruti and bastar.#vijay prashad#cw: rape#left discourse

finished up at the socialism conference - brain on fire thanks to ruthie wilson gilmore, tracy rosenthal & leo vilchis, the idea that we have to act our way into thinking, that praxis informs theory, that abolition is the rehearsal of communism - also got to chat about being a new york liberty hater with hanif fucking abdurraqib (!!!!!!!!!!) - but now I must speak
the american left (and I do NOT mean only caucasian americans, the american left is black and brown and queer as fuck, good, but my puzzlement stands) is so freaking weird about the global south and interacting w global south people. relax. I am literally from India, you didn't make a faux pas by asking where I'm from. like just relax. also stop silver bullet-izing kerala, an extant example of communists seizing and holding onto electoral power IS exciting, it is very very exciting I am with you, but that doesn't absolve you from doing the slightest bit more research, you need to go beyond "mass provision of public goods" for the love of God, and you need to treat apologists of sindur-nandigram like vijay prashad a little more critically. it is like the self-recrimination but also titillation of being Main Character that is really really annoying

Anger On Kolkata Streets, Cops Use Water Cannons, Tear Gas On Protesters
Chaotic scenes are being witnessed on the streets of Kolkata as police intercepted a protest march to state secretariat Nabanna over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor in the city’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Riot police are using teargas shells and water cannons to stop the protesters from proceedings towards the state secretariat. Some of the protesters are throwing stones towards the cops.
No permission was given for the protest march and the ruling Trinamool Congress yesterday alleged a conspiracy to create unrest throw violence during the rally. Kolkata Police virtually turned Nabanna into a fortress and as many as 6,000 police personnel were deployed to stop the protesters from advancing the secretariat from any route. Drones were also used to keep a watch on the protesters. Barricades have been welded into the ground and greased to prevent the protesters from scaling them.
This morning, a group of protesters gathered at College Square and marched towards Nabanna. They raised slogans demanding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation over the horrific rape and murder case. Several student organisations and citizen forums have joined the protest. Visuals showed the protesters shaking the barricades in their way.
While the ruling Trinamool alleges this is a BJP-backed protest, the organisers have said it is a march planned by student organisations. Many of the outfits part of today’s protest are not registered organisations. Most known student outfits, including those affiliated to political parties, have distanced themselves from the protest.
This morning, Leader of the Opposition in Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, said four student activists part of the protest plan went missing after midnight.
“The following Student Activists who were distributing food to the volunteers, who were arriving at Howrah Station, suddenly went missing after midnight :- Subhojit Ghosh, Pulokesh Pandit, Goutam Senapati, Pritam Sarkar. Neither they can be traced nor are they answering their phones.
We apprehend that they may have been arrested/detained by the Mamata Police. If something happens to them Mamata Police will be held accountable,” Mr Adhikari said in a post on X.
Bengal police responded that the students were planning to orchestrate large-scale violence during today’s march “and were involved in a conspiracy of murder and attempted murder”. “They have been arrested in the Interest of public safety and security, and their families have been informed,” they said. Mr Adhikari then said that the families of the four students have approached the Calcutta High Court.
One of organisers, Shubankar Halder, has said he used to be an ABVP member at one point, but is not linked to the organisation anymore. He said this protest is an apolitical protest.
The Trinamool has said this march is an attempt to create chaos in the name of students’ protest. State minister Chandrima Bhattacharya told the media yesterday, “This is a BJP-ABVP plot to create disturbance. This is a plot to open fire by criminals in police uniform. Tomorrow there are exams. Can students do this? They are doing vulture politics.”
The Trinamool released two videos to stress that there is a plot to create unrest. In the videos, the authenticity of which NDTV has not verified, several men are heard saying, “we need bodies”. Trinamool leader Jayprakash Majumdar alleged, “The BJP leadership has been told that unless a Nandigram-type incident happens and there are dead bodies, the tide will not turn in BJP’s favour.”

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee: The Reformist Politician Who Tried to Transform the Left
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the last Left Chief Minister of West Bengal, passed away in Kolkata at the age of 80, closing a chapter on his tumultuous and influential political career. Known for his ambitious reforms and the struggle to modernize the state, Bhattacharjee’s legacy is one of both significant achievements and stark failures.
A Promising Start
Bhattacharjee's rise to prominence came in 2000 when he succeeded the legendary Jyoti Basu as Chief Minister of West Bengal. His tenure was marked by an aggressive push towards industrialization, with grand plans that included the Nano car project in Singur and several other development initiatives.
Despite winning overwhelming support in the 2001 and 2006 Assembly elections, Bhattacharjee faced growing challenges. His efforts to attract industry, including major investments in IT and steel, were met with resistance, especially from farmers affected by land acquisitions.
The Turning Point
The land acquisition controversy over the Nano plant in Singur and the SEZ in Nandigram sparked massive protests. The situation escalated, leading to the tragic deaths of 14 protesters in Nandigram in March 2007. This unrest was a significant blow to Bhattacharjee’s government and marked the beginning of the end for the Left Front’s dominance in Bengal.
The failure of these projects and the ensuing political fallout paved the way for Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) to rise in power. In the 2011 Assembly elections, the TMC ended the Left’s 34-year rule, and Bhattacharjee lost his seat in Jadavpur to TMC’s Manish Gupta.
Reflections and Regrets
In a 2013 interview, Bhattacharjee defended his push for industrialization, arguing that it was essential for the future of Bengal’s youth. He expressed regret over the violence during the Nandigram protests, acknowledging the difficult choices faced by the government at the time.
Political and Cultural Contributions
Bhattacharjee’s political journey began in 1966 as a primary member of the CPI(M), where he quickly rose through the ranks. He served as Information and Public Relations Minister, Home Minister, and Deputy Chief Minister before becoming Chief Minister. Despite his political achievements, he remained connected to his cultural roots, engaging with Bengali literary figures and contributing to literature himself.
After his political career waned, Bhattacharjee retreated from the limelight due to health issues. He stepped down from his roles in the CPI(M) Politburo and Central Committee in 2015, and by 2018, he had largely withdrawn from active politics.
Legacy and Final Years
In his later years, Bhattacharjee’s public appearances were rare, and he declined the Padma Bhushan award in 2022, citing a lack of information about it. The CPI(M) even used an AI-generated avatar of Bhattacharjee in a last-ditch effort to rally support during the Lok Sabha elections.
Bhattacharjee’s life and career reflect a complex legacy—one marked by bold reforms and equally notable setbacks. While his efforts to modernize West Bengal were met with significant opposition, his impact on the state’s political landscape and his contributions to its cultural life remain significant.
Conclusion
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s passing marks the end of an era for West Bengal's Left politics. His journey from a reformist leader with ambitious goals to a figure overshadowed by controversy and defeat highlights the challenges of political transformation and the delicate balance between development and social justice.

Kerala is not an autonomous region of India? It is a state like Uttar Pradesh or Bihar or West Bengal. It is ofc continously marginalised by the BJP led govt at the centre in terms of tax revenue bc its an opposition governed state. The LDF has no organised armed wings, unless you count gangs of young men who beat people up during election season, in which case every single party from the left to the far right has them.
They're not affiliated with the Naxals who are actually waging an armed insurgency against India, because those guys identify as Maoists and are deemed ultra left adventurists and revisionists by the CPI(Marxist). They're also in an entirely different region of India with a base of mostly tribal and peasant organising in Bastar. CPI(Marxist) is not meaningfully communist except in name to anyone who pays attention to politics in India, especially after the shitshow of Nandigram.
Hmm 🤔 Imagine finding out your actions have consequences 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️

hi there! i have an ask i think u might either have an answer for or know someone who does. im looking for texts about the history of the naxal movement in india or also wider leftist history in the indian subcontinent. i feel like i have a very biased understanding of it since my grandparents were involved in the naxalite movement and growing up in the US, that was sort of the only thing i ever heard about indian leftism. i'd love to read more, especially about the wider context at the start of the uprising in 1967, but im not sure what sources are best.
cool grandparents!
The Story of an Aborted Revolution: Communist Insurgency in Post independence West Bengal, 1948–50 by Sekhar Bandyopadhyay, The Naxalite Movement in Central Bihar by Bela Bhatia, The Dalit and Naxalite Movements in AP by Ajay Gudavarthy are all short pieces for you to get started with some more interesting pieces of context.
I have also been recommended, but not read India’s Simmering Revolution: The Naxalite Uprising by Sumanta Banerjee and The Burning Forest by Nandini Sundar as broad overview books.
On the broader leftist movement itself: Reinventing Revolution: New Social Movements in India by Gail Omvedt should give you a good overview of leftist history in India that isn't just Naxalism. I have contentions with her representation of Ambedkarites but her broad analysis is correct. On other pivotal moments, I think you should read Unclaimed Harvest: An Oral History of the Tebhaga Women's Movement by Kavita Panjabi and The Long Haul: The Bombay Textile Workers Strike of 1982-83 by Rajni Bakshi.
This is not a reading you necessarily need I think. But on modern politics esp for people unfamiliar with India's left, Singur/Nandigram is key to getting why the parliamentary left in this country is a dead end. Maitreesh Ghatak's academic work is useful in this vein. The book reviews on EPW are a good place to start if that's too much.
All of these are all available online at the usual places but in case you can't find them feel free to DM me.
