#119 Once Were Warriors (1994)
Director: Lee Tamahori
New Zealand
I went back and re-watched this film. I had seen it some years ago, and the impression of it had always stayed with me. The lasting impression was one of violence, but I think the violence in Once Were Warriors is conditional and symptomatic.
In my opinion, the baseline struggle in this film has to do with Maori culture and identity. The film, from the opening shot to the end, provides an oppressive and depressing setting in which the characters have to sort through the clutter of contemporary society to establish some value to their lives. If anything, Once Were Warriors is a call to return to traditional Maori culture and values; to return to some honesty rediscovered from the lost wisdom and integrity of the past. We see through most of the film scenario after scenario of a character having to confront their own demons. Sometimes these are in the form of cultural / political obstacles, sometimes they are in form of very personal struggles.
The violence that takes place in the story has a deep and important value to the characters, and each responds differently. The father, Jake Heke (Temuera Morrison) drinks a ton, ruthlessly beats his wife, and in general wreaks havoc over the entire family with his uncontrolled rage. His wife Beth (Rena Owen) puts up with his volatile rage, until she is finally beaten so badly she decides to take the kids, leave for good, and return to her home. To stay is to go nowhere, or worse to die. Escape is imperative, and this is pretty much the earnest desire of the whole family, especially the kids. But Beth, and the other women of the film, in their drunken stupors, have decided it’s the woman’s place to quietly suffer the abuse, and hold out for those rare days when everyone is civil. It’s a shallow hope, and in the end it doesn’t work.
Each character reaches an emotional tipping point, they either run into trouble with the legal system, get put out of a job, drink too much, or suffer yet more pain and humiliation from their own people. Uncle Bully (Cliff Curtis) rapes his 14 year old niece. In short order, the young girl Grace (Mamaengaroa Kerr Bell) resorts to hanging herself in the back yard. This is the beginning of the end for the father, Jake the Muss. The pain of the unraveling of the family, the death of his daughter, and his wife leaving him cannot be resolved by more alcohol or continual violence toward his family. Somewhere along the way, Jake has turned his back on Maori heritage; but returning to it is something that two of his sons have decided to embrace. And this is why I say that Jake’s violence is symptomatic. He lashes out because he belongs to nothing but his own anger, and he cannot accept that his wife and children no longer will conform their lives to his brutality. He learns they do not love him as much as they fear his retaliations. They no longer respect him, and put little stock in his approval. He is seen only as a liar, a person of false promises, because he cannot be honest with himself. He sees others mainly as products of weakness. Physical strength is his only method, but it is emotional strength he lacks. And this is where his wife Beth get the better of him. She knows all Jake can do is lash out, he will never move beyond violence as his only response to conflict. Violence is the core of his identity, and it lays in wait like a raw exposed nerve.
The title of the film comes from a culminating confrontation between Beth and Jake. She understands that it is better to leave Jake, rather than continue living the lie that all is well. To leave for “home”, is to discard the ugly present situation of their lives, and reconnect with the past as a way forward, a way toward pride and truth. And really this is what culture is supposed to offer: a direction, a purpose, a ritual to adhere to, a belief that can impose some tradition or meaning upon the formation of our lives. Modernization went a long way toward destroying relationships. Whether between people, the earth, our own cultures and societies, and with this bargain came the modern condition of the loss of meaning, what Carl Jung referred to as “modern man in search of a soul”.
In my mind this is really what this film is about. The violence that is done to ourselves, our cultures, and our lives when meaning has been lost. Each of the characters in Once Were Warriors is on this path of rediscovering who they are. All except one, Jake.
Jake is left screaming, “You’ll fucking be back!” as the family drives away. This is as far as Jake’s violence will take him. He’s running out of people to assault, and he is seething at the failures of his own life. The broader statement of the film is that the Maori as a people need to come to terms with these same conflicts and conditions. How they survive, adapt or escape from a modern world that has all but obliterated ancient wisdom in favor of material / commercial progress. It’s a slash and burn cultural war waged at the level of individual identity. And sometimes, wisdom is not found by running blindly into the future; no sense of purpose or meaning can be instilled until one has reconnected with the wisdom offered by the past.

ONCE WERE WARRIORS (1994) Grade: B
It's a powerful family drama. Intense and might not be for everyone. It’s a recommended drama film. I’d had liked to some of the sub-plots of the son’s get a little more screen time but that’s nip-picking.

Once Were Warriors (1994)
Rewatch.
The story of a Maori family struggling with poverty, alcohol, domestic abuse, gangs, crime and cultural heritage. What a movie. This movie hits harder than Jake the Muss. I remember sitting down to enjoy this and having my blood turn cold.... more than once.
Shocking, funny, sweet and violent with fantastic performances from all involved. Just an absolutely compelling movie. I cannot recommend this highly enough and I wont be leaving it as long until my next rewatch.
Superb.
"I was right... too much weights, not enough speedwork. Useless prick".
"Cook the man some fucking eggs!".
"Our people once were warriors. But unlike you, Jake, they were people with mana, pride; people with spirit"
