Spring Water Collector
Each week or so i look forward to visiting a local spring, where water flows out of an old pipe in the side of a hill, under a road, into a stone basin and out down into the fields. There are many springs in the Malvern Hills area, some flowing fast and clean, some barely dripping, presumably due to not being looked after over the years. But this one is a favourite as it's surrounded by trees that tower over you while collecting water. At night, when there are very few cars it is really quiet and I am often serenaded by owls hooting.
Tumblr media
The benefits of local spring water in this area are well documented going back through the years, and i can see why - the taste is clean and pure with no additives. Today i decided to bring along my binaural microphone rig to sit alongside the spring and take in the sounds while i collected water.

Quote
I now realised this woman was livid with anger. Not the sort that suddenly hits you, then drains away. No, this woman, I could tell, had been in a kind of white heat for some time. It’s the sort of anger that arrives and stays put, at a constant level, like a bad headache, never quite peaking and refusing to find a proper outlet.

Roman Coin Hoard From Reign of Nero Found in U.K.
A hoard of gold and silver Roman coins dating back to the reign of Emperor Nero have been found during building works in Worcestershire.
The treasure, consisting of 1,368 Iron Age and Roman coins, includes the largest collection from the emperor's reign ever found.
Worcestershire Heritage, Art & Museums said the hoard was discovered in the Leigh and Bransford area, west of Worcester, in late 2023.
It is expected to be valued at more than £100,000.
Experts from the charity said the find was "one of the most important archaeological discoveries in Worcestershire in the last 100 years".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most of the coins are silver denarii, minted in Rome and dating from the time of the Roman Republic in 157 BC up to Nero's reign between AD 54–68.
The sole gold coin is an Iron Age stater, which was minted for the local British tribe, the Dobunni, who were in the area now known as Worcestershire and neighbouring counties to the south and west in AD 20–45.
Dr Murray Andrews, lecturer in British archaeology at University College London, said the discovery was "remarkable".
"It's the most miraculous thing I've seen over the last 100 years," he said. "It's an important piece of archaeology.
"It tells us about what was happening here 2000 years ago, when the Malvern hills were maybe the boundary of the Roman Empire."
One expert theory is that the hoard represents the savings of a wealthy local farmer, who made his money by supplying the Roman army with grain and livestock.
The sheer number of coins meant that the hoard would have represented a "very considerable sum of cash" at the time it was buried, the expert said.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is likely that the pot containing the coins was made at one of the pottery kilns based at the foot of the Malvern Hills.
After the hoard was declared as treasure by a Worcestershire coroner in June 2024, Worcestershire Heritage, Art & Museums said it was aiming to help raise funds to buy the hoard so that it can go on public display.
It aims to raise £6,000, and hopes the remainder of the cost will be met through grant-funding applications.
If the money cannot be raised, the hoard will be returned to its finders or the landowner and may not ever go on public display.
Chair of Worcestershire County Council's joint museums committee, Karen May, said: “What a fantastic find and so important for anyone wishing to understand more about the county’s heritage.
"This is real Worcestershire treasure, and it needs to be seen and enjoyed by Worcestershire residents for generations to come.”
The hoard is the third to have been found in the area in the past 25 years.
In 1999, 434 silver coins and 38 shards of pottery were found near Chaddesley Corbett.
In a much larger find, two detectorists from Redditch found a clay pot full of 3,784 coins on Bredon Hill in 2011.

Mrs. Walsh at her home in Malvern Hills, 1938.
Tumblr media
Rebecca Isabella Walsh (Nee. Kingsley) was the only child born to Mr. Kingsley, an attorney, and Mrs. Kingsley in the small country town of Newcrest. Growing up, the Kingsleys were very close to the Walsh family as her father and Edwin Walsh were partners in their law firm. Rebecca and Mr. Walsh's son Peter became very good friends until she went off to finishing school, and the pair lost touch. Rebecca and Peter reconnected while the latter was in university, and the pair fell in love over exchanging letters.
The couple began engaged in 1887 and married that July due to Mr. Walsh and Peter's younger brother David being deathly ill with typhoid fever, both dying later that summer. After Peter passed the bar in 1888, Rebecca quickly acclimated to being the wife of an attorney and the couple had four children: twins Edeline and Alexander in 1892, Byron in 1895, and Giselle in 1900.
Initially, Rebecca and the teenage Edeline clashed against one another due to her more conservative views, but she eventually let her daughter be the first woman in their family to attend university, where she met her husband Montgomery, marrying in 1915. The outbreak of the Great War would take her eldest son's life, devastating her family, and Peter never fully recovered from it. After losing Edeline and the love of her life Peter to the Spanish Flu, Rebecca became very clingy to her younger children, especially to Byron, who looked the most like Peter. However, after witnessing her son's choices in both of his marriages and the realization her daughter is a homosexual, she withdrew.
After the Crash, Rebecca lost all of her money, so she went to live with her son Byron until she learned of his sexuality and "affair" with Montgomery MacGregor, disowning him and her daughter, moving to her father's hometown in Malvern Hills. However, when she started dying, Rebecca had a change of heart toward her living children, asking for forgiveness which Byron happily gave but not Giselle, though they made some amends. She died surrounded by her two younger children and their families.
Rebecca was kind and loved her children more than anything, though like Peter, Alexander was the object of her favoritism. As she got older, however, she became more cynical and judgemental, standing strongly in her convictions, which led to the estrangement of Giselle and Byron. She greatly enjoyed being a grandmother and while flawed and misguided, Rebecca truly believed she was trying to do what was right for children until her death.
Rebecca is survived by her son Byron, daughter Giselle, daughter-in-laws Eleora and Francesca, and grandchildren Simon-Elliot and Amalia.

Rebecca was the longest-lasting character in my legacy so far. Even though she lowkey was a mega homophobic bitch and had A LOT of internalized misogyny, I did really enjoy writing her, and part of me wishes I could go back to the 1880s and 1890s to write more about her, but I am satisfied with her story, it feels very appropriate for a woman of her age and time. Fare thee well Rebecca!
and now to be more sad, here's photos of her since 1880s :(

Hereford, Dynedor and the Malvern Hills, from the Haywood Lodge, Harvest Scene, Afternoon
Artist: George Robert Lewis (English, 1782–1871)
Date: 1815
Medium: Oil paint on canvas
Collection: Tate Britain, London, United Kingdom
Description
During Britain’s long war with France (1793–1815) it was almost impossible to travel to Europe. Consequently, artists and writers focused on the native landscape with a new intensity. Like Constable, Lewis explored the possibility of working directly from nature, outdoors. This is one of a group of pictures of Herefordshire subjects which Lewis described as having been ‘Painted on the Spot’. However, it is clear that he must have reworked the composition. The passage of time has caused changes to the painting, which have revealed traces of a harvester to the right of the main group of figures.
