(this has probably been said before but I'm new to the fandom haha) Everytime I rewatch season 1 and I just refuse to belief that Malin and the other bodyguard don't know that Wille and Simon are a thing. Like, it's their job to be observant and Wille is just also so completely smitten, you really think they don't notice? And I also think it's funny she signed up to be the bodyguard to a Crown Prince but all she does is babysit this lovesick teenage boy and drive him to his boyfriend's house whenever he wants to visit xD

Glitter and Glass
A Malin POV oneshot about the aftermath of the snow globe incident
Malin watches in horror as the snow globe rolls and shatters on the floor. She'll never forget the look on Wilhelm’s face, shaken and heartbroken, trailing his hands through a mess of gold glitter and broken glass. A wave of guilt washes over her.
“I shouldn’t have pulled at him so hard,” Malin tells her wife, later.
“It wasn’t your fault,” Talia replies softly.

This idea hasn't left me alone all day. But I'm also not entirely satisfied with what I have written. But the idea is so intriguing and it won't leave me alone. I'm in a pickle. but here's a little bit
Willie sat outside his parents room and listened.
“I just… I don’t want to force him, Elanora. I don’t,” Malin said, “It should be his choice. But… I also know her. She won’t… she won’t take no for an option. And what choice do we have?”
“We always have a choice. He’s our-” she said.
“But do we?” Malin questioned, “He’ll always be ours. But he’s also theirs. They didn’t know. We didn’t know. What if you were in their position.”
“That’s not fair,” Elanora said. A silence fell over them. Willie moved to a crouch, ready to move if the conversation was over or one of them was headed out of the room.
Eventually he relaxed when their voices picked up again.
“I just… even you’ve said you couldn’t bring up a child in that environment. That it’s had lasting effects,” she said, her voice softer.
“He at least wouldn’t be the first born. Maybe there wouldn’t be as much put on him,” Malin said.
“We both know that wouldn’t be true,” Elanora snorted. Malin sighed.
“Maybe… maybe we can talk to the social worker or find a lawyer. See if we can find what our legal rights are,” Malin said.
“Really?” Elanora asked. Malin sighed.
“Really,” she agreed, “They… they’re my employers. And the situation is complicated without that. But, you’re my family and I’ll fight for that first.” After that, the silence grew and was only broken by soft murmurs. Willie finally stood up and made his way to the living room.
He didn’t know what to make of his parents' conversation. He knew he was missing some key information. But he couldn’t help but feel like it somehow had something to do with him. He just couldn’t figure out what or how he would have anything to do with the Royal Family. The only reason he had any kind of connection with them was because mamma worked for them, protecting the Crown Prince. He sighed and flicked on the TV. He was too tired to figure it out. But he also knew he wouldn’t be able to fall asleep. It would be another sleepless night, which meant he was due to trigger a migraine any day now.

So I wrote this post about being scared for Wille's revenge in s2 on October 12th. And I said that I was scared that he'd take it too far that Malin would have to intervene because "Malin’s first and most important role is to protect the crown" AND GUESS WHAT HAPPENED IN S2
Like bruhhhhhhhh
I also said that "Wille might tell himself that his revenge is for Simon (fan speculation), but I think a bigger part of him knows that his revenge is for himself too." And we were right about that too! A la piano room fight where Simon finds out that it was August

Malin has the best facial expressions.
The most enchanting thing about Malin and her facial expressions, though, is that Anna Peterson, who plays Malin, is not a professional actor. She’s ex-Swedish army, went into personal protection after leaving the army.
I.e. Malin the bodyguard is played by a real life professional bodyguard. So those facial expressions are probably Anna’s own.
The way Malin just goes 🤷

This scene gives me chills every time. Yeah, in 1.06, in the final scene, a song about revolution played while Wilhelm looked stonily into the camera. Yes, in 2.01 we saw Wilhelm publicly humiliate August, and have a panic attack while on speakerphone with his mother and her most senior advisors. We’ve seen him rebel already.
But in 2.02, the stakes escalate dramatically. Wilhelm has to put his body on the line, because the consequences of his phone call the previous episode include physical force.
This scene also shows how power corrupts. Malin is supposed to protect Wilhelm from physical danger, and instead she inflicts it. She’s following orders from Jan-Olof, not manhandling Wilhelm for kicks. And I suspect that offscreen, at some point before Jan-Olof’s arrival, the Queen spoke to her son’s bodyguards on the phone and told them to follow Jan-Olof’s instructions no matter what they were.
The queen and Jan-Olof were clearly anticipating the possibility that Wilhelm might resist physically. If they hadn’t, Jan-Olof would’ve needed to call Kristina and ask her what to do next when Wilhelm sat down at his desk and gripped on tight. Jan-Olof didn’t even pause, which means he and the queen had already made it clear to Malin and the male bodyguard in the hallway that the Crown Prince was to be taken back to Drottningholm even if he physically resisted.
Those are still illegal orders, even if they’re from the queen, but Malin does what she’s told. I don’t know that I blame her too much. If she told the Queen and the Marshal of the Realm that they were giving her an illegal order and she wouldn’t follow it, she’d just be immediately removed from the Crown Prince’s security detail and replaced with another bodyguard who would follow orders. Malin would be perceived as “not a team player”, and her career in law enforcement would be badly damaged.
And if she blew the whistle on being given illegal orders by the queen and the marshal of the realm, her law enforcement career would be over altogether. There’s a reason whistleblowers are rare: retaliation. So yeah, Malin shouldn’t have used physical force on the boy she’s supposed to take a bullet for. But in the real world, she’s unlikely to put her career on the line for a temperamental 16 year old.
Especially when she knows Jan-Olof would just find another bodyguard to carry out those illegal orders, Wilhelm would be transported to Drottningholm anyway, and she’d have torched her career for nothing. Judging by her friendly greeting to Wilhelm and willingness to do him a favour in 2.05, she probably feels kind of guilty about having followed orders to subdue him by force. But she still did it.
That said, clearly Jan-Olof, Malin, and Joakim (I think that’s the name of the burly male bodyguard who’s posted just outside Wille’s door) are not monsters, and neither is the queen. They weren’t expecting this MUCH physical resistance. They clearly also weren’t expecting the Crown Prince to go into a dissociative state on the floor after his physical struggle with Malin caused his snow globe to smash. If they were monsters, they would’ve taken advantage of him no longer physically resisting to bring out zip ties.
I think the scene works brilliantly as shown. Malin and Wilhelm struggle, the snow globe goes flying, then Wilhelm is transported into a flashback of the day Erik gave him the snow globe. By the time we hear “Crown Prince” from Jan-Olof and we’re back out of the flashback, Wille is on the floor of his bedroom, in shock, picking up the broken pieces of glass. Nobody is manhandling him any more.
But I will always wonder who lost their nerve first after the snow globe smashed and Wilhelm dissociated. Joakim was still outside the door, holding back the curious throng. So it must have been either Jan-Olof or Malin who looked at the distraught boy on the floor cradling a broken ornament, and said, “I don’t think this plan is going to work. We need to explain to the queen what’s happening.”
It could’ve also been practical reasons that they didn’t break out the zip ties when Wilhelm stopped struggling and started trying to put the broken snow globe back together. Yeah, they can restrain him, but there are 20 Hillerska students in the hallway outside his room, they all already heard a ruckus, and they all have camera phones. Joakim can tell them that.
And if Joakim starts confiscating phones on Jan-Olof’s orders, that will cause an even bigger uproar, and more students will arrive with THEIR phones. They’d need to lock down the entire student body, all the teachers, and all the staff, to make absolutely sure nobody filmed them dragging the Crown Prince out. They don’t have the manpower for that. And if they brought that kind of manpower to Hillerska, the locals would notice, and the media would start asking questions. Maybe even send helicopters.
If Malin and Joakim drag the Crown Prince out of Forest Ridge, either unconscious, or struggling in restraints, and put him in a waiting car, it’ll be all over Instagram Live within 5 minutes. It would be a massive scandal. Malin and Joakim would probably get fired, so would Jan-Olof, and the queen might be subject to a parliamentary inquiry into her possible abuse of power by giving illegal orders to police officers whose salaries are paid for by the Swedish taxpayers.
Malin would suddenly be a lot less willing to take the queen’s illegal orders, if it meant her face ending up all over the internet and the newspapers as part of a police brutality scandal. I still don’t know if it was her or Jan-Olof who first said they had to call the queen and say they needed a new plan, though. I doubt we’ll ever know.
Wilhelm put his body on the line for his rebellion, and it actually succeeded. It wouldn’t have succeeded against the KGB, for example, but the KGB didn’t have to worry about the internet, the free press, or grandstanding politicians the way Kristina and Jan-Olof do. But also, Kristina, Jan-Olof, and the bodyguards weren’t expecting him to really COMMIT to resisting physically.
They were probably all expecting him to make a huge fuss, but eventually give in. It’s not surprising that’s what they expected. In 1.01, Wille didn’t want to make the televised apology and claim he was enrolling at Hillerska of his own free will. But although he complained loudly and bitterly at first, once the cameras started rolling, he did what he was told. He hated every moment, but he backed down and said his lines.
In 1.06, he desperately didn’t want to do the interview with the journalist where he claimed it wasn’t him in the video and he was straight. He told Kristina flat out he wanted to say nothing at all, and just have a relationship with Simon. But eventually, reluctantly, he did what he was told yet again. A new set of lies for the media and the public, written by PR professionals for him to recite out loud like an actor.
In S1, we see Wilhelm repeatedly rebel against authority, and in the end, his rebellions always, inevitably fail. He second-guesses his own judgment, he allows his mother to convince him lying is the only way out, he always blinks first. And in 1.06, him losing his nerve and failing to follow through on a promised act of rebellion means he loses Simon’s trust, and Simon ends their relationship. So we get the song about revolution playing in the last few moments of S1, suggesting Wilhelm will fight harder next season, will stop giving in.
And the suggestion is right. In 2.02 he has yet another conflict with the royal court and his mother. But he resists, and for the first time, his resistance actually works out for him. A 16 year old gets into a battle of wills with the marshal of the realm, two two highly-trained law enforcement officers, and, by phone, his mother. And yet in that battle of wills, THEY blink first.
It’s probably less about him and more about the 20 Hillerska students outside his room with camera phones, but nevertheless, he defies their will, he defies physical force, he doesn’t lose his nerve and give in at the last minute, and he gets the outcome he wanted. His success in 2.02 in breaking free foreshadows the events of 2.06. In his jubilee speech, Wilhelm successfully defies his mother and the royal court again, stops obediently reading out lies written by a PR person, finds his own voice, and finally tells the truth.
But in the process of that first successful rebellion in 2.02, Wilhelm loses the the last gift his brother ever gave him. He also loses the illusion that his bodyguards are there to protect HIM. And he loses the illusion that his mother won’t have her staff use physical force on him if he doesn’t cooperate with what she wants. He probably needed to lose those illusions, in order to reach the point in 2.06 where he can successfully rebel again.
But it’s a painful scene anyway. He seizes control of the situation, he rebels successfully for the first time, but it all comes at a price.
