With the threat of the dormant serpent hanging over their heads, suddenly those lies didn't seem so harmless anymore. Or: Gwen is the primary keeper of the one (1) brain cell in Camelot, which she wields to great effect in missing-scenes-turned-canon-divergence in 4x06, "A Servant of Two Masters."

In the end, the character best served by Young Royals was Sara. This may be a hot take but, in my opinion, she was the character with the most fulfilling story arc overall, one that was fully fleshed out and had a beautiful open ending and/or beginning.

Sara went on a journey over the course of three seasons, and what a journey it was.  When we meet her she is someone who doesn't fit in anywhere including within her own family. She had suffered terrible bullying at her prior school and was suffering ostracization at her current one.  She wanted more out of life and for herself, and so she tried to change herself to fit a mold that she thought would make things better and allow her to escape. Then she begins to form true connections with others and makes a friend, and she does it by being completely honest and open. Yes, that honesty causes problems in the relationship, but she is able to mend them.  Then she falls in love and in the moment it feels wonderful but it is the start of her downfall. Sara makes a lot of very bad decisions and ends up betraying everyone she loves.

Then she put in the work to correct that, and it was messy and challenging and very realistic. Nothing she tried at first to make amends went right.  Going to the police, what she thought was the cure-all, only made things worse. Her attempt to appease Simon by following his directions and leaving only increased his resentment. Felice would barely look at her. 

Ultimately, she realizes that it's not grand gestures that matter but facing what she did and its consequences and just being there.  So she stops trying to fit into a mold and returns to being unflinchingly honest both to others and to herself. She does not try to force apologies from either Simon or Felice (unlike another character) but instead makes herself present and available to them every time, no matter what response she gets back.  Both relationships still need care and mending but it seemed clear that everyone was headed in the direction of full forgiveness. 

She faced her personal fears too. I can't imagine how hard it was for her to go to Micke for help and it demonstrated how desperate she felt. How wary and hesitant she was to trust her father because she kept expecting him to fail her again, and how devastated she was when the expected failure did indeed happen. But she realizes how so many of her actions were inspired by her terror that she would inevitably follow in her father's footsteps. But instead of that betrayal reaffirming her prior stance, everything she has gone through matures her and she understands that even if something may cause pain, that doesn't mean it isn't worth it.  She comes to understand what's actually important to her.

The best part was that Sara shared her hard-earned wisdom. She is able to give back to both Simon and Felice at a time when each is experiencing self-doubt and pain, assuring them that they were in the right. Her words were something Simon and Felice needed to hear in those moments.  And that's true of August too, who also needed to hear that the narrative he had constructed in his head was a false one, and that Sara was not here to save him from himself. Which leads to the most iconic line of all:     

Prior to S3, I had hoped that Sara would learn from her mistakes and gain some maturity and wisdom and engage in self reflection. And damn if that isn't exactly what she did. 

Sara is the one who is handed the keys to freedom (the car) and who has spent the season learning and earning the skills and experience to best use that freedom.  She has come back to herself and her roots, so we hear for the very first time, her speaking Spanish. And it's words of love to family. She is ready to move to a new town and start on a different path. She recognizes that Simon wants to protect her and instead of resenting that like she did in S1, she assures him it's not necessary. 

Sara says that she will be just fine. And I believe her.

Hate how some ppl are saying it shouldn’t have been a big deal for Simon to delete his accounts and lay low for Wille. Yeah sure that’s probably what’s expected for the crown prince’s partner, but wasn’t s3’s whole point ‘why should he have to? Why should Wilhelm have to?’ You want a queer king to revolutionise the monarchy but want that monarchy to operate exactly as it always has?

It’s not even that he hated all the attention! He loved being appreciated for his music, he was so happy that boy in bjarstad looked up to him, he thought that if Wille had to start a foundation, he could do some good for a cause he believed in. Yeah they’ll probably always still be in the public eye, but I think with time and support Simon could make peace with that, if he got to handle it in a way that fits his values and lets both him and Wille thrive (this is how pop star Simon can still win). IMO the issue was the royal court and Wille’s own issues leaving him out in the cold, with no idea how to deal with the hate except to “ignore it”

Honestly I’ve always felt that Simon and Wilhelm both have very “small” dreams. I actually kind of disagree with the pop star Simon agenda (but I also don’t fully disagree with it I think it can work depending on the context), but yeah he loved the positive attention 😭

I see a lot of people who keep saying that abdication wouldn’t solve all of Wilmon’s problems but they’re kind of missing the point?

Like yes Wilmon will always have to live with scrutiny and probably security, but they’ll be free to live how they choose. Wille can cut his hair how he likes, he can get tattoos, paint his nails, move out of the country, choose not to have children, get married however he likes - or not get married, dress how he likes, develop his own interests without wondering how the public is going to perceive him, etc. Simon can post on social media however he likes - they’ll have no reason to hide behind outdated ideas of respectability or tradition.

They’ll be free in all the ways that matter.

I also want to point out that the last thing Wilhelm says to his parents is that he loves them and the queen lets him go. It’s very much implied that Wille’s going to repair his relationship with his parents and it’s probably going to be a lot healthier now that he can be himself

Young Royals terms explained

One thing I noticed across all seasons, and in the official subtitles, and among fan discussions, is that everyone is throwing around the specific terms used to describe the workings of a monarchy a bit willy-nilly. The subtitles aren't always consistent in how they translate the Swedish terms, and the show never explains what the different ones mean.

In real life, we also use the terms a bit sloppy because it really doesn't matter that much, but I thought I'd take a stab at listing the terms, their best English translation, and what each term means to me.

Monarkin - The Monarchy

This is the political system, the form of government that Sweden, and a bunch of other countries around the world is using. It means that the office of Head of State is held by the head of a family, and is inherited according to whatever inheritance rules apply. The system also implies that you have an explicit class system, an upper class, and that your royals are the pinnacle of this class.

If you're a big fan of the system you're a royalist, and if you're a big fan of the opposite, a republic, you're a republican. Most people typically don't give a shit, though.

Kungahuset - ?

This is a term that the subtitles struggle a bit with, because there's no good English equivalent. It's sometimes translated as the monarchy, sometimes as the royal family, and sometimes as the royal court depending on context. In Swedish, it means the system and the people that inhabit the system. The official homepage of the Swedish royal family is https://www.kungahuset.se/

Kungafamiljen - The Royal Family

This term is used when talking about the royals as a family, it's about them as individuals, as people. In season 2 they mention the tv show "Året med kungafamiljen", which is a real show, and it has that name because it emphasises them as people. The purpose of the show is to make them relatable and human for PR reasons, to show off their quirky character or something.

Det Kungliga Huset - The Royal House

Never used in the show, but I thought I'd mention it anyway because you might be tempted to translate kungahuset like this, but that's a bit off. This term specifically means the monarch and the closest family members that are in the line of succession; it's everyone who is styled as a Royal Highness.

It can also mean the dynasty, the noble house that currently holds the title of king of Sweden. In the real world it's House Bernadotte, but in the show we never got to know the family name.

Slottet - The Royal Palace

The Royal Palace is the office of the monarch, the place where the work is done, it's where you would meet the royals for meetings, it's just like how a regular office is used for a regular business, it's their "HQ". The term is used pretty much how you would use "The White House" as both the building itself and the office of the president of the United States.

In the show, there's only one royal palace which serves as both residence and office. However, in the real Sweden, the royal family has two big palaces, the main one in the middle of Stockholm, and Drottningholm just outside. The main one is the office, where they work, and Drottningholm is their private residence, where they live most of the time.

Hovet - The Royal Court

In ye olden days, the court consisted of the king, his family, his servants, and the foremost nobles, advisors, and officials who hung around and essentially made up the executive branch of government. These days the court simply means the organisation that supports the royals in their official duties, it's all of their employees, and in the real Sweden the court has about 300 of them. Some of them still have funny titles like the Marshal of the Realm or Governor of the Royal Palaces, but think of those guys as the the vice presidents or directors or chiefs of staff of a normal company.

If you ever see something like "the court says", it means that the people working in the office of the monarch had a meeting and made a press release about something.

In the show there's a few named members of the court; Minou and Farima both appear to work for the PR department, while Jan-Olof is probably Marshal of the Court or something.

Kronan - The Crown

Just like in English, this term can mean the physical crown, the little golden hat with gems and stuff that is the symbol of the monarchy, but most often it means any legal entity that is the country itself, if that makes sense. For example, in Sweden, we think of the military, and all military equipment as "kronans egendom" - "property of the crown", and the single largest landowner in Sweden is technically a government-owned forestry company, but we think of their land as "kronans mark" - "crownlands".

The reason for this usage is that once upon a time all of these things were actually the personal property of the king, and inherited along with the office, but they've had to give it all up through consecutive political reforms. So, paradoxically, everything that is the property of the crown is actually owned by the people of Sweden through the government, while any personal belongings of the royal family isn't property of the crown.

Remember how we had that YR week back in spring? That was fun. At least *I* thought it was fun. And considering I have a little free time on my hands in the next few months... how would you guys feel about doing another little something?

Now! There's a few options of what we could do, so before we decide on anything I'd like to get your opinions and see what you're excited about and what not. And because Tumblr's poll option might be convenient but doesn't allow for much flexibility or nuance, I have made a Google Form.

The form is geared towards both writers and readers, you'll be able to choose on the first page which is most applicable to you. There's about five questions for each group, so it's super quick. I've tried to make the questions simple and straightforward, but if something's unclear, please don't hesitate to ask.

when i was younger i used to read so so much. it got to the point where reading was my entire personality and my mum had to take my books away because i literally wouldn't do anything else. but once i got older this passion fizzled out a bit because i didn't really have the attention span and already had to read enough for school or uni. but young royals fanfiction really has ignited that spark again. reading a fanfiction doesn't really seam intimidating, so that's what got me in the beginning, but now i just absolutely fell in love with so so many fics, it's absolutely incredible. the young royals fandom seriously has some of the best writers ever EVER and i'm beyond grateful. there are so so many fics in the fandom that in my opinion are even better than published books!! and i actually think this fandom has some AUs where the characters are so so in character, of course it's not the same as the series but i'm just constantly in awe thinking if the characters of the show were put in this situation they would exactly act and think like that. it's like the writers perfectly encapsulate their essence, absolutely INSANE. the thing i missed most about reading while i wasn't, was finding a text passage that is so so beautiful that reading it is not enough, that i want to ink the words into my brain. i missed the feeling so so much and thanks to the amazing fic writers in this fandom i've been able to experience it again and i just couldn't be more grateful. So thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the amazing fic writers in this fandom. Writing is incredibly scary and i'm proud of your courage and dedication to your work 💜💜💜💜💜

I really want to be able to handle reading more WIPs at once, I struggle to keep them all in my head and differentiated, and they start to blur together if I am not careful.

But on the other hand, I do enjoy the excitement of a new chapter dropping.

I am getting better at keeping them distinct in my head though, and I even keep notes on some of them. Maybe it’s since beginning to write longer stuff myself?

Thank you for the reminder of the value in it from the authors’ side, I will make more of an effort to read more WIPs. 💜

I have a love-hate relationship with people waiting for fics to be complete before starting them.

Don’t get me wrong, I fully understand why people do it. There’s nothing worse than getting invested and then having the author say they’re not going to complete it (no one look at me 💀). But at the same time, having active readers that comment each time there’s a new update is soooooo important to a lot of writers motivation for posting more. I know fic writing isn’t supposed to be about how much attention a fic gets, but it still definitely helps when a writer sits down and is trying to find inspiration to keep writing the next chapter. I remember posting summer of love and feeling sad when a chapter didn’t get as much engagement as I’d hoped, but then, when it was finished it finally got a lot of attention. Attention that would have been super and helpful and validating when I was actually writing it.

I don’t know, it’s a weird situation and I��m not entirely sure I know what I’m saying, but I think it’s important to remember that these writers are writing stuff for free, and yes, being able to binge a fic is awesome, but from a writer’s perspective it can be a bit discouraging while you’re writing. Knowing so many people won’t even give it the time of day until it’s marked as complete.

Young Royals: things that make me wonder

How much does Nils know about Wilhelm's promise to Simon re the video, and Simon's feelings about that promise being broken? Is he just guessing here about that being the source of tension between them? For that matter, how much does the rest of Hillerska know about it?

They would all have seen Wille's public statement and known he was lying, and would no doubt all consider this the appropriate action. They would also notice that Wille and Simon aren't behaving like a couple, although they do see them interact (they sit together in class several times, the rowing team see them run off together and talk together at training, etc).

But it's not till this scene that Wille admits to Nils that he told Simon he wouldn't make the statement, and that's why Simon is upset. So it seems that before being told that, Nils, and presumably the rest of Hillerska, assumes that Simon's pissed off because Wille didn't admit to being in the video, rather than that Simon is reacting to a betrayal of trust. Which adds another level of betrayal on top of the original one, because it's Simon's refusal to play the game, and not Wille's betrayal of him, that they see as the real problem.

Ultimate Young Royals Character Tournament: The Final Results Winners Crowned!

We're crowning some young royals today! Thirty Eight contestants came in but only a select number will win. Over the last nine days we voted down the top characters in Young Royals, and now it's time to crown the winners! Check out the previous poll results here. Also thanks again to @hillerskalibrary for hosting fan week, which inspired me to finally do this tournament which has lived rent free in my head for months.

In the final round Felice beat out Boris, winning with 67.% of the vote. Felice has been Crowned the ultimate young royals character and Princess Felice of fictional Sweden. She is wearing current real world Princess Estelle's crown for her coronation.

In a surprise finish they tied with less than a percent between their vote counts so:

It's been A Week for YR fans everywhere - which was, of course, the intention. Most everyone seemed to enjoy it (see also the tags above), although some people had missed the memo.

(It happens to the best of us!)

Fortunately though the creators had marked their calendars - and so we got art, we got a whole ass Character Tournament (which is not over yet! keep an eye out for the finale tomorrow!) and of course we got fic.

So. Much. FIC.

There are no less than 37 works in the AO3 collection, good for over 130 000 words. Yes, you read that correctly - YR writers collectively wrote a novel the size of Return of the King in just one week. And considering there's multiple WIPs in there, the fun is far from over!
