⏰ 🚨 attention please🙏🚨
Dear friends and compassionate supporters,
This is Eman Zaqout, from Occupied Gaza, Palestine. I am a Biotechnologist ,🩸💉 and scientific researcher contacting you at a really desperate moment.
I am seeking your assistance to raise funds for saving our lives, facing the starvation in Gaza and help me achieve my doctoral degree dream after being awarded OWSD PhD Fellowship for inspirational women🍉👩🎓
just like any motivated and loving life woman, and for years, I poured my heart and soul into my work at Al-Shifa Hospital and Turkish Palestinian Friendship Hospital, as Biotechnology Specialist serving cancer patients with compassion and skill.
photos of Turkish Palestinian Friendship Hospital before and after the IDF destruction
photos of Al-Shifa Hospital before and after the IDF destruction
I also gave medical lectures to students at different universities and training centers in Gaza👇☑
As a result of my outstanding grades in my study and the excellent performance in my job, I have been a holder of different scholarship and I am active participant in many research visits and scientific missions. 💪The last scholarship as at McGill University in Canada three months ago before the starting of the genocide in Gaza.😫
However,😥
My life changed dramatically when Israeli military launched a sweeping war against Gaza. My home and our neighborhood in the North have been destroyed along with our belongings and precious memories early in this crisis.😢💔
My job and my husband's job are gone. Israeli military forced us to evacuate from the north Gaza to the south where they claimed it would be the safe zone but it is not at all. Our sweet home and neighborhood have been destroyed 😥😭💔
Forced to flee with nothing but the clothes on our backs, today, we find ourselves sheltering in a displacement camp lacking access to sanitation, medical supplies, food and drinkable water. I will not talk a lot about the dire and unbearable life we have to go through, as no word can express it fairly 🥺😣
The good news in the midst of this tragedy, that I am one of the 22 women from the developing world who have been awarded OWSD- PhD fellowship to pursue my PhD study in Malaysia🍉💪. But now I am stuck in Gaza unable to achieve my dream because Israeli army has occupied and closed all the border crossings 😭💔
Meet 22 fellows awarded OWSD PhD fellowship
This genocide has been 11 months of hell and horror. We have reached a point where there is no hope left for us here in Gaza, where we are unfortunately just waiting for our turn to die.
Nevertheless,
I refuse to succumb to despair, holding on to the belief that brighter days lie ahead.
With your kindness and generosity🥺, I hope to survive the genocide and reclaim the path to achieving my doctorate 💉🩸
Your compassionate aid would mean the world to me and my family.🥺🙏❤🇵🇸✌

Monument vs Shrine
In "Replica, Aura, and Late Nationalist Imaginings", the political scientist Benedict Anderson (most famous for his Southeast Asia scholarship and that definitive critique of nationalism, Imagined Communities) muses on the Lincoln memorial:
Within a temple explicitly mimicking "the religious edifices of a safely pagan Greece";
Mazda Corp floodlights designed "to ward off unnatural, indifferent sunlight";
The abstract enshrinements of "Lincoln's memory" in the "hearts of the people", while neither Lincoln's actual remains or any rites for people to perform are present;
The sense that ultimately the most reverential thing to do there is to take photographs.
+
The Lincoln Memorial; the Jefferson memorial next to it; both figures repeated again on Mt Rushmore; both figures repeated ad nauseum on dollar bills.
These monuments are designed to proliferate. Not only must they create a sober, stately experience for the visitor---but they must also do so consistently, because they are built for visitors: the mass audience of the national population.
Otherwise they must be physically replicable: a memorial to a particular national hero, erected in every city.
The very format of monument-building get copied:
Post-colonial countries, in need of new myths, choose to manufacture national cenotaphs of their own, in imitation of Western models.
Malaysia has Putrajaya, a federal capital sprung ex nihilo from palm-oil agricultural land, its buildings all arches and onion domes and imitation arc de triomphes in inhuman scale, its avenues broad and utterly unwalkable in the tropical heat.
+
At such monuments the citizen is cast as tourist.
Of this state-sanctioned object of devotion you are encouraged to take photographs, sell merchandise---ie: continue the process of replication. With every copy nationalism is reified.
God forbid you tweak the official monument with your own meanings, though! While writing this post, I found the following story, from December 2023:
"Lincoln Memorial temporarily closed after being vandalized with 'Free Gaza' graffiti"
+
Anderson's essay cites instances where the personal and irreproducible sneak back into, or leak out from, or vandalise, national monuments:
"Early in the 1910s,"---in Manila's Cementerio del Norte, a municipal cemetery planned by an American urban designer---"a small pantheon was constructed for the interment of Filipino national heroes."
This monument was to emulate the Pantheon in Paris, where "great Frenchmen" of the national canon are memorialised.
But the Filipino version failed.
"Today, hardly anyone in the Philippines is aware of this dilapidated pantheon's existence ... What has happened is that the Filipino Voltaire and Rousseau have managed to escape, summoning devoted, often familial bodysnatchers, to convey them to home-town shrines."
+
Not that the municipal cemetery itself is deserted. Custodians and their families live in the very mausoleums they care for.
Further, Anderson describes All Saints' Eve in the Cementerio del Norte, when thousands pour into its precincts.
But these multitudes adjourn to their own myriad family graves and small ancestral shrines: spending the day with immediate loved ones, "drinking, praying, gambling, making offerings ..."
Most of the Philippines' presidents have mausoleums in Norte, "but no one pays attention to them ... and only their separate descendants come to attend them."
"There is something exhilarating here that one rarely sees in national celebrations, maybe because the structure of the ceremonial is not serial, but entirely cellular."
+
Hometowns re-exerting themselves within the nation; ordinary people scrawling meaning onto the edifices of the uppercase-P People. A multitude of the singular, instead of a single mass.
Despite nationalism's efforts to centralise and clone a national identity, still we mutate, still we bootleg, still we graffiti, becoming once again ourselves.
And---particular to post-colonial societies---in doing so we casually continue the work of liberation, sneaking the idea of freedom away from our own architects and elites and prime ministers, who would seek to seize its meaning for their own purposes.
The churches or mosques or temples to demos that the federal government builds are ours to transform. To take from. To ignore.
"No need. We've got our own shrines at home."
+
National heroes become local saints and slip out of national control.
Does the Filipino government really control the various Rizalista sects? Karpal Singh is now a datuk kong, without his political dynasty's consent.
Across Melaka and Negeri Sembilan there once existed shrines dedicated to Hang Tuah, Malay folk hero, now a powerful figurehead of Malay-Muslim ethno-nationalism.
One such shrine existed at Tanjung Tuan:
With a plain altar---more a porch, really---of poured cement, for folk to leave food offerings;
Sunlight mottled from the surrounding forest, and fluorescent lights from a nearby gazebo;
A large rock, with an indent on its crown, said to be Hang Tuah's actual footprint;
The idea that this was a sacred space, where you could come to ask the spirits of the place for love or children.
The shrine that existed was sited in a forest reserve. It was swept clean of leaves by locals; its adherents belonged to all faiths and ethnicities; following the transactional logic of folk religion, those who had received its blessing would've paid for its maintenance.
+
"Existed".
Because the Religious Department of the State of Melaka destroyed the Hang Tuah shrine sometime in 2022, for the crime of idolatry.
A double heresy. An affront to both orthodox Sunni Islam---
But also to the Malaysian state, that sanctions Sunni Islam as its official religion; whose nationalism requires its mythic hero to have only the attributes and magics the state ulama and historians say he must have---and no others.
Local shrines are destroyed, because the nation-state intuits them to be threats to its exclusive franchise.

explaining characters in hetalia badly: family member archtype edition
an incomplete list for funsies
just imagine they're all at a big family reunion lol
Germany: The closeted cousin who still hasn't figured it out.
Prussia: The cool older cousin who's jacked up on the remnants of the energy drinks he chugged during finals week trying to study for his med school exams. Probably specialized in kids medicine, but he's too jittery to confirm.
Italy V: The cousin who's a cousin because someone married someone a couple months ago and has no idea about all the ettiquette rules ye and what not to discuss in front of Great Aunt Sarah.
China: Great Aunt Sarah
Italy R: The cousin who's just hit his highschool years, and has decided MHA and Valorant is his whole personality.
England: The one manning the grill.
France: The one actually manning the grill.
America: The guy who's young enough to be your older brother but old enough that he's a dad. Don't worry, he's cool- he won't make you babysit, but he's gonna show up with those kids in biker jackets and they'll do a fun dance to entertain everyone halfway through dinner.
Russia: The uncle that apparently is a war vet. Definitely saw things he shouldn't have seen and you don't leave your kids with him. Tells the wildest stories over dinner though.
Canada: The cousin who you forget exists because he's actually normal. Actuality has probably spiked something.
Japan: The one hiding in a room playing video games. He might share if you ask nicely.
Lithuania: Someone's spouse. Not sure whose, but he made a nice caserole.
Sweden: That one distant relative who you almost forgot to invite.
Finland: The guy who showed up and you're not sure where he came from, but he's kinda fun so no one questions it.
Norway: The one who was forced to tag along with the rest of the family.
Iceland: The one who pretends he doesn't want to be there but he'd show up even if he wasn't invited because the food is kinda good.
Denmark: The one bringing the alcohol and manning the bar you didn't kow you had.
Latvia: The one trying to sneak underage drinks.
Estonia: The one pretending to be a normal person with his "honor student" and "full ride scholarship next year" but is secretly helping Latvia sneak a drink.
Spain: The uncle who's been married ten times.
Switzerland: The one who only showed up because he was begged to. Either ends up in the corner watching the game or in the middle of the table retelling some grand tale.
Liechtenstein: The one bringing all the delicious deserts and a fruit tray and forced Switzerland to socialize.
Austria: The one insisting on putting on the radio the moment the "go ahead" for the food is said. Might have even called up everyone to remind them to bring their instruments.
Hungary: The one who gets everyone dancing the moment Austria whips out the fiddle tunes.
Seychelles: The one who innocently suggested a board game after the dance-off winds down.
Hong Kong: The cousin who sticks around long enough to say hello to the aunts and uncles and grandparents and get some food before hiding in the room with Japan.
Belarus: The cousin who's a movie-cutter highschool "popular girl" and spends the whole time on her phone texting her boyfriend.
Ukraine: The aunt that break up the board game fights and bans it from future events.
Luxenberg: You don't know what he does for a living, but he brings cool stuff for everyone.
Netherlands: The globetrotting uncle who you're pretty sure knows everyone and everything.
Belgium: The cool aunt who's single and living life.
Phillipines and Thailand: The fresh-out-of-collegers cousin who keeps taking photos of everything.
Malaysia: The fresh-out-of-colleger cousin also taking photos but only aesthetic ones.
Taiwan: The aunt that starts making smoothies unprompted.
Monaco: The cousin who brings a book to read in the corenr.
Cameron: The uncle you don't want to get into an argument about sports with. Switzerland does not head this warning.
Greece: The uncle who drove all day and night to get here with a full car, and is now knocked out on the couch.
Turkey: The funny wine grandpa.
Cyprus: The college dropout who now works at a seven-eleven.
Egypt: The cousin who's studying history and is pretty average except you have photographic evidence that he sat next to a pond and talked to ducks for half an hour and was very serious about it.

Pre-med Results
It has obviously been a hot minute since A level results have been out. However, I thought writing in general about my O level results, A level results and other exam results would be the best way to start this little blog of mine. I will also take this opportunity to introduce myself a little.
During o levels, i wasn't exactly hard working. I had gotten burnt at some point during grade 8 and a personal experience in graded 9 pushed me further away from my studies. I do intend to go into those details some time in the future. For now, I will stick to my study methods and the results this gave me. Despite my lack of interest in studies during this time, I always paid attention in class. I was that girl who would maintain eye contact with the teacher, mostly because it helped me stay present. I did not have many friends and that definitely aided me in staying focused. I did have a few crushes on boys but this did not really affect my studies as I did not talk to them. I might go into more detail about this later. The memories are pretty funny when I look back. Anyways, luckily I did not do too bad on my exams. I got A*s in Chemistry, Biology, Math, Computer Science, English and Physics IGCSEs. I got As in Dhivehi and Islam SSCs.
My grades during O Levels were not perfect. I had not reached my goals. I had thought that that was to be expected as I had not tried as hard as other people my age, and promised myself to try harder in the following years.
My A levels started off to a good start. I was implementing methods which worked for me as well as avoiding methods I had tried and found not to work. In hindsight, some of my goals were pretty unrealistic and I believe that played a key role in my diminishing motivation and discipline. However, I remember feeling embarrassed when people would see me working hard and studying. Other people did not seem to be working as hard and this made me feel insecure. Gradually, I stopped studying completely and lost track of all my assignments. Talk about peer pressure huh. This also happened to be a point in time where I was dealing with a huge identity crisis and this only added to my stress. In the end, I got pretty good grades, but far from what I had hoped for. I got As in Chemistry and Biology A levels and a B in Math A level. I also got 2 As in Dhivehi and Islam HSCs. This was really unfortunate for me as in my country those who got all As received a full government scholarship to study in quite literally wherever they chose. Regardless, the B in math was deserved, I would say, as I had been a careless student.
After many tears, I decided not to dwell too much on the past. My parents and I went to a higher education fair where we spoke to a few medical schools in Malaysia. Namely, NUMed, Cyberjaya and MSU. I ended up really loving NUMed and MSU was a close 2nd. I was advised by all of them to take the IELTS and so I did, and recently received my results. I got an overall 8.0. (Listening: 8.5, Reading: 8.5, Writing: 7.0, and speaking 8.5)
I will be writing about my experience applying to medical schools as well as more soon so make sure to follow me!

Pop's Diner (Part 2)
Malaysia: So, you wanted to talk to me about something important? Andrei: Yeah. Uh….well, after this season, I’ll be eligible for the SFL draft. Malaysia: You’re gonna enter? Andrei: Idk, Lay. That’s why I wanted to talk with you about it before anybody else. It’s a big decision. If I do enter the draft, I'll have to leave college early and give up my scholarship. And there's no guarantee that I'll get picked by a good team or get a good contract. Malaysia: Yeah, that's true, but you’re one of the top athletes in the country so I have no doubt you’ll get a good contract. Andrei: I know, but the multiple injuries and less play time has brought my stock down. Then I have all this pressure on me for my return game next week. I don’t even know if I’m starting. Malaysia: Why wouldn’t you start? You're the best player on your team. Andrei: They got this freshman putting up numbers similar to mine. People saying he’s the “new Jaguar” 'baby Jag".
Jaguar/Jag is the nickname Andrei’s coaches, team, and most people from the sports world refer to him as.
Andrei: Since I’ve been out, he’s taken my starting position. Then I heard these sports analysts talking about how he's a faster, younger Jaguar.

This is Eman a Biotechnologist from Gaza. Asking for help is not easy. It's not easy at all. You have no idea how mentally and emotionally tiring this is. But when thinking that the price is my family's life, getting out of here safely and achieve my doctoral degree dream, it just pushes me more and more to do this until we reach our goal. I'm here as I try to reach out to more people asking for their help to support our family's campaign so we can survive while all you have to do is literally donating even by just the price of your morning coffee or maybe a simple breakfast, So I think I'm not asking for so much. We're really tired of living under these catastrophic conditions for a whole 10 months. Your generosity will not only change our lives but also remind us that even in our darkest hour, we are not alone. https://gofund.me/d597b8e2
since I'm currently dirt broke at this time (and also 15 without a job), I can't donate myself, but I can spread awareness on my platform. it's basic human decency and sympathy to help someone in need.
Eman Zaqout works at Al-Shifa Hospital and Turkish Palestinian Friendship Hospital (TPFH) as a biotechnology specialist, serving cancer patients with compassion, care and skill. along with being a medical professional, Eman is also in the scientific field, conducting research in and out of the Gaza Strip. as a result of her hard work she has been awarded numerous scholarships, one of which is to attend a research project at McGill University in Canada. Eman returned to her home a month before the genocide began in the Gaza Strip.
while also pouring her entire being into her career, Eman is also a mother and wife. she's married to Mahmoud Zaqout, who with she has a 12 year-old son, Rakan, and a 10 year-old daughter, Seba. she used to live in her sweet neighborhood in the north.
this is Eman's neighborhood and family before the genocide...
... and this is what the IDF did to her home. Eman's family was forced out of their home and into unsanitary and undersupplied camps, where they are forced to live in displacement camps along with thousands upon thousands of other Palestinian families who were all subject to the same destruction and malice.
Eman's neighborhood, livelihood and happiness have been shattered, but not her resolve and determination. "The loss of my job, my home, and the comforting presence of my loved ones weighs heavily on my heart," Eman says on her GoFundMe page. "Nevertheless, I refuse to surrender to despair, clinging to the belief that brighter days lie ahead."
in the midst of destruction and despair, Eman is one of 22 women in the developing world who has been awarded an OWSD-PhD fellowship in order to pursue her PhD study in Malaysia. due to the Israeli forces occupying and closing the Rafah borders, however, she is stuck in Gaza and unable to achieve her dream.
she's determined to get her family out and back to safety as well as achieve her dreams, and you can help. with a $40,000 dollar goal, over $14,000 has already been raised to help evacuate Eman and her family.
"Your generosity is not just a donation; it is a beacon of hope in the face of adversity, a lifeline for not only my family but also other displaced families at our camp torn apart by conflict. Your support, whether big or small, will make a significant difference during this challenging time as we lost everything we have, and not just observe from the outside."
let's get Eman's family out of Gaza and help her achieve her dreams!!

July 17 - Fulbright Center and Aboriginal Museum
(You can click on the pictures to enlarge them and see the whole image)
I decided today to go to a local bakery for breakfast instead of breakfast at the hotel. I wanted to try the pineapple cake that is known in Taiwan. I also got a croissant, red bean and matcha pastry, and chocolate mochi. My favorite thing was the chocolate mochi. Then we headed out to our first excursion, which was the Fulbright Center. The Fulbright program is funded by the US government, and its aim is to give scholarships to students or professors to go to different countries, whether to learn/teach a language or even just to do research or go to school somewhere else. We were given presentations from different people there, and then they gave us snacks, drinks, and lunch. The Taiwanese snacks were pretty good, but the asparagus juice was a little challenging. After lunch, we met up with Peter and went to the Shung Ye Museum of Formosan Aborigines. Before the Chinese immigrated to Taiwan, and before other settlers came here (Dutch, Spanish, Japanese), there were native aboriginals here for thousands of years. I got to see many indigenous artifacts and learn more about their ways. After we left the museum, Peter decided to take us to a popular boba tea chain and buy all of us tea. I got sweet oolong tea with boba and coconut jelly, and it tasted very good. Finally, some of us in the group went on a bar crawl in the evening. There were some other people in our bar crawl group. I talked to guys from London, Manchester, Chicago, and Auckland.
Academic Reflection:
The first presenter at the Fulbright Center taught us that the program was signed into law by Harry Truman. I had no idea that we had a program like this for that long. He also said that the scholarship covers airfare, health insurance, etc. and you receive a stipend. I found it really interesting and important that the board of the program in Taiwan has equal representation from Americans and Taiwanese. I was surprised at the whole list of programs they had for English only undergraduates. The new semi-conductor one sounded cool.
Something from the reading that Peter also taught us right when we got to the museum was that the indigenous languages are from the Austronesian family, which also includes the Philippines, Malaysia, Madagascar, New Zealand, and Hawaii. This knowledge gave me a better understanding of who these people were as I perused the museum. The reading also said that for thousands of years, Taiwan wasn’t known much by ancient imperial China. This is shocking to me, given how close Taiwan is to China and that it is now called the Republic of China. But seeing everything in the museum affirmed this idea that the indigenous people were undiscovered and left alone for a long time.

My Scholarship Journey
Alhamdulillah berhasil submit beberapa hari sebelum deadline. Sekarang lagi nunggu pengumuman.
Jadi, sekarang lagi menunggu dua pengumuman beasiswa. Bahkan ga sampai 10 persen. Nantinya, jika lolos MIS masih harus melewati satu tahap lagi yaitu wawancara baru jika lolos kembali akan dinyatakan sebagai penerima beasiswa MIS. So, yeah, bismillah saja :)
Kalau LPDP? Tahap pertama, seleksi administrasi. Another bismillah.
If I could choose between MIS and LPDP, I am not sure what I would choose. It's really tough. But, maybe, I don't know. I love Malaysia very much. I'm so excited to live and study in another country. But, Jakarta, there is someone who will be there. It means, if I am there, I will be that close to that one person. Caaa :')
They planned, but Allah also planned. And Allah is the best of planners.
I will be updating it in the next few months. Bye for now :)
