“CUTI-CUTI MALAYSIA”
Malaysia was once ranked 9th in the world for tourist arrivals. The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017 ranks Malaysia 25th out of 141 countries overall.
In an effort to diversify the economy and make Malaysia's economy less dependent on exports, the government pushed to increase tourism in Malaysia. As a result, tourism has become Malaysia's third largest source of foreign exchange income, and accounted for 7% of Malaysia's economy as of 2005.
The government agency in charge of promoting tourism in Malaysia is Tourism Malaysia or the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB). On 20 May 1987, the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism (MOCAT) was established and TDC moved to this new ministry. TDC existed from 1972 to 1992, when it became the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB), through the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board Act, 1992.
In 1999, Malaysia launched a worldwide marketing campaign called "Malaysia, Truly Asia" which was largely successful and brought in over 7.4 million tourists. The extra revenue generated by tourism helped the country's economy during the economic crisis of 2008.
KELANTAN
Kota Bharu means ‘New City’ in Malay which is a bit of a misnomer as this is actually one of the most traditional places in all of Malaysia. Kota Bharu (which is sometimes also spelled Kota Baru) is the capital of the state of Kelantan on the east coast of peninsular Malaysia and many people simply visit it as part of a trip to the lush Perhentian Islands off the coast. Simply using Kota Bharu as an entry and exit point is a shame however, as there is plenty to enjoy here for a few days and you will get to see a completely different side of the country.
The east coast of Malaysia is known for being far more conservative than the west coast and the central region, but this allows you to get a glimpse of a fascinating culture here. This includes beautiful Islamic architecture in the form of graceful mosques and you can also enjoy traditional museums and a range of toothsome local dishes that are unique to the state of Kelantan.
Have breakfast at Restoran Capital
If you want to kick off a trip to Kota Bharu with one of the best breakfasts in the city then head to Restoran Capital where you can try a local favorite called Nasi Kerabu which includes blue rice and a number of delicious curries that you will only find in Kelantan.
A plate of Nasi Kerabu comes with hard boiled eggs and crunchy prawn crackers and you can also get coffee or tea here if you just fancy a drink. Bear in mind that this is more of a breakfast venue than anything and if you arrive after 9 am then the nasi kerabu may already be sold out. It’s that good.
Ride on the Jungle Railway
The Jungle Railway is one of the main reasons why many people travel to Kota Bharu in the first place. The railway runs along the east coast and through the center of Malaysia and passes through Kelantan where it stops at the city of Tumpat. When you travel on the railway, you can spend time enjoying the amazing jungle views and the train carriages hark back to another era when one of the only ways to travel here was by train.
Tour Istana Jahar
One of the best museums in Kota Bharu is Istana Jahar which dates from 1887. As such this is one of the prettiest buildings in the city in its own right and it contains an amazing display of craft objects from the state of Kelantan such as batik pieces which are weaved in the traditional style. The museum will also take you on a walk through a range of local ceremonies such as a circumcision ceremony using diagrams and photographs, and you can even learn about Kelantanese weddings and funerals. If you want to have a drink and look out onto the pretty Kelantan River then consider heading to Bike Station Cafe. Here you will find a number of dishes and drinks available including a range of local snack options like spring rolls called popiah. You can also simply relax with a fruit juice or an iced coffee, but if you are feeling active then there is also the opportunity to rent a bike here (hence the name of the cafe) and zoom up and down the main waterfront promenade.
Take a boat ride down the Galas River
The Galas River is one of the main rivers in Kelantan and is also a tributary of the main river artery in the state known as the Kelantan River. Many people come to Kelantan to take a boat ride down the river and this is one of the most magical experiences that you can have in this part of Malaysia. The river snakes through thick areas of jungle and you can choose different kinds of tours such as short jaunts up the river or longer trips that can take several days if you are game.
Walk along Pantai Cahaya Bulan
Pantai Cahaya Bulan means Moonlight Beach in Malay and is one of the premium beaches in the Kota Bharu area. Interestingly, it used to be known as Pantai Cinta Berahi which means the Beach of Passionate Love, and so the locals, perhaps fearful of visitors to the beach taking this literally, decided to change the name to something more chaste. Nowadays the beach is usually referred to as PCB and you will find a strip of sand here that backs on to some delightful little restaurants that sell local seafood dishes. This mostly consist of grilled fish called ‘ikan bakar’ so try and time your visit to coincide with lunch or dinner.
PERLIS
Perlis is the smallest state in Malaysia covering an area of around 800 sq km. It is also the northernmost state on the peninsular and is surrounded by Thailand on the northwest, north and northeast borders and by Kedah state on the south and east. Its full official name is Perlis Indera Kayangan. In the 2010 census it had a population of just 225,000 which was the least populated in Malaysia apart from the Federal Territories of Labuan and Putrajaya. The capital city of Perlis is Kangar and the royal capital, where the Raja has his residence, is Arau. Perlis is the only state where the ruler has the title Raja. There are not a huge number of tourist attractions in the state but Perlis does have a certain rustic charm with green rice fields, quaint kampungs and the unspoilt beauty of its forested border with Thailand.I must admit I have only visited Perlis once so far. Based on my visit, here are my suggestions of what to see and things to do in Perlis.
Interesting places to visit in Perlis
GUA KELAM
One of the most distinctive caves in Malaysia with a 370-metre long limestone cave near the small town of Kaki Bukit (literally 'foot hill') and known as the Cave of Darkness. Gua Kelam Recreational Park is popular for its enchanting 'cave walk' where you can enter from one end of the cave and come out at a different location.
Hutan Lipur Bukit Air
This recreational park is located real near the Perlis snake farm where visitors can experience the sight and sounds of a tropical rainforest or dip their toes in cool streams that goes through the forest.
Kota Kayang Museum
A museum that traces back to the history of the Kedah’s Sultanate which had something to do with how Perlis for formed. Things that can be found here include money, artifacts, weapons and some ornaments.
Kuala Perlis
A quint little town that hold one of the entrance to Langkawi Island. Immerse and explore the life that goes on in this small fishing village and its range of amazing seafood.
KEDAH
Kedah is a state in the Peninsular Malaysia and together with Perlis, Perak and Kelantan, they all share a common border with their neighbouring country, Thailand. Kedah is known as the “Rice Bowl of Malaysia” where its rice plains produce more than half of the country’s home grown supply. Kedah’s early history can be traced from the prehistoric period to the archeological site of Bujang Valley, the early Maritime trade of India, Persia, Arabs to the written works of the early Chinese pilgrims and early Chinese records, the Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa or known as the Kedah Annals to the Al-Tarikh Salasilah Negeri Kedah. Kedah was also known as Kedaram, Kidaram, Kalagam and Kataha by the Tamils and Kalah or Kalaha by the Persians.
In the 7th and 8th centuries, the region was dominated by Sri Vijaya. It followed by the Siamese until the 15th century, when the Malay sultanate of Melaka came to power. During this period, the Melakan influences were introduced while the dominant aspects of Kedah’s ancient civilisation began to wane. In the 17th century, Kedah was attacked by the Portuguese when it conquered various parts of Malaysia. In 1821, Kedah fell into the hands of the Siamese and remained under their control until British took over when the Anglo-Siamese Treaty was signed in 1909. Kedah established independence along with the rest of Malaysia in 1957.
Bujang Valley
Enchanting Bujang Valley in Kedah has ancient ruins and artefacts from a lost Hindu-Buddhist civilisation. This archaeological area was the site of an ancient Hindu-Buddhist kingdom that ruled the region from the 4th century AD. Over 50 Hindu and Buddhist temples or chandis (or candi) have been excavated from various sites in the valley. Artefacts and relics found at various sites, dating back to the 4th century, includes pottery shards, stone statues of Hindu icons, inscribed stone tablets, metal tools, Song and Ming Dynasties ceramic wares, ornaments, beads and semi-precious stones.
Kuala Kedah Fort
(Kota Kuala Kedah or Kota Kuala Bahang) is sited at the mouth of Sungai Kedah facing Malacca Strait. The fort, surrounded by a moat, is the site of numerous battles that marked Kedah’s struggle against foreign domination and control.
Bukit Hijau Forest Recreation Park - The Bukit Hijau waterfall is familiar to many in Kedah but less known to tourists from outside the state. This park, located in the Gunong Inas Forest Reserve, boasts some beautiful waterfalls along Sungai Mempelam (Mempelam River). The recreational park spreads over 2,100 hectares, with seven waterfalls and natural pools at each fall.
PERAK
It is not easy to pick the top Perak attractions because there is so much to see and do here. Perak is one of the largest states in Peninsular Malaysia with an area of over 21,000 sq. km. stretching from just north of Selangor all the way of the Thai border. Its scenery includes the hills of the Titiwangsa range along its Eastern edge, the unusual limestone karst towers outside Ipoh, some spectacular caves, the huge Temenggor Lake, excellent beaches and the popular resort island of Pangkor.
The historic towns of Ipoh (Perak's capital), Taiping and Batu Gajah contain some fine heritage buildings and places of interest while the Royal town of Kuala Kangsar has some interesting palaces, museums and mosques to admire. Perak was one of Malaysia's main tin mining areas and the country's only surviving tin dredge is a piece of industrial heritage that can still be visited. Add in the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan, the former colonial hill station of Maxwell Hill, Kellie's Castle and for families, The Lost World of Tambun, and you can see that Perak has much to offer. Located in Kampung China, which is the Chinatown area of Kuala Terengganu, is the Ho Ann Kiong Buddhist Temple which is one of the most visited spots in the city. Negeri Sembilan
What are the top Negeri Sembilan attractions?
Negeri Sembilan is one of the smallest states in Malaysia and it is not particularly well known as a tourist area. However there is a lot for the visitor to see and it is well worth taking time to look around. Being located close to the Klang Valley, it means that many of the top Negeri Sembilan attractions can be easily reached on a day trip from Kuala Lumpur. The name Negeri Sembilan means 'Land of the Nine States' after the nine districts, each with their own chieftain, which used to make up the state.
Borders have shifted over the centuries and districts re-organised so that today there are seven districts in Negeri Sembilan, namely Seremban (formerly Sungai Ujong), Port Dickson, Rembau, Jelebu, Kuala Pilah, Jempol and Tampin.
The state is home to Malaysia's Minangkabau culture, a community originally from West Sumatra who settled here in the 15th Century.
The Minangkabau are famous for their unique and elegant architecture with curving, ornate rooflines whose points are said to resemble buffalo horns.
Their society is traditionally matrilineal, meaning that wealth and surnames pass down the female line, although this community, numbering around 300,000, is nowadays fully integrated with the rest of the Malay population.
The ruler of Negeri Sembilan is known as the Yang di Pertuan Besar (He Who Is Greatest) instead of Sultan as in other Malaysian states.
Negeri Sembilan Attractions
The Sumatran influence on the architecture is found in many distinctive and attractive villages in the state with an idyllic rural feel. This makes driving the byways a pleasure. Negeri Sembilan contains some modest sized mountains to hike. It is home to the nation's most popular beach resort and there are plenty of historic sites, museums, parks and more to enjoy.
Royal Museum Seri Menanti
The Royal Museum Seri Menanti is housed in the unique Old Palace building (Istana Seri Menanti) in the small town of Seri Menanti in the Kuala Pilah district of Negeri Sembilan. Seri Menanti is the royal capital of Negri Sembilan state. Negri Sembilan translates as ‘nine states’ referring to the nine territories which made up the confederation from 1773 onwards. The rulers of this state are of Minangkabau origin having migrated from western Sumatra about six centuries ago bringing their distinctive customs and architectural style with them.
This building was constructed between 1902 and 1908 as a royal palace to replace an earlier one which was destroyed by the British in 1875. It was built by two highly skilled local craftsmen, aided by technical drawings provided by the British head of the Public Works Department. This four storey wooden structure was made without the use of nails from chengal, a durable and termite-resistant tropical hardwood, and with ironwood roof tiles. Although the palace incorporates a sloping roofline, which is characteristic of Minangkabau architecture, the design is actually unique to Negeri Sembilan, perhaps with an element of colonial influence thrown in. It served as a palace and official residence of the Negri Sembilan ruling family until a newer brick palace was built nearby in 1932. The whole structure is elevated on stilts and the lowest floor was used as a hall for official audiences, while the second floor housed chambers for the royal family. Above that was the Yang Dipertuan Besar’s private apartment.
The Old Palace
The palace was converted into a museum of royal regalia in 1992 and contains displays of costumes, weapons, furniture and other paraphernalia.
As well as the building itself there are a couple of exhibits in the grounds:
Batu Kasur. This stone slab is a replica of an original in Minangkabau, West Sumatra. It was used to test a royal prince. Before becoming ruler he had to sleep on this stone for a few days while covered with jelatong leaves which irritate the skin. Only Raja Melawar is believed to have passed this test
Batu Bertikam. This is another replica of an original stone in West Sumatra. This one relates to customs of the Chaniago tribe.
Pantai Bagan Pinang. One of the better beaches. At the northern end a river discharges into the sea. The river was not too grubby but no doubt that varies with the weather. Better to avoid that end for swimming although the fishermen seemed to like it. The sand quality was good and clean. A group of happy girls were being towed around the bay on a banana boat. There is plenty of parking here. There are toilets and showers and a shop to rent windsurfers, kayaks, beach volleyball, and life jackets. There is a restaurant and picnic tables.
Pantai Saujana. Fine, white sand and calm, clean water with no rocks hidden under the surface. Jet-skis, speed boats, banana boats for hire. Good parking. Food stalls, toilet and shower available. Trees for shade.
Pantai Nelayan. This beach was a shocker! People were camping up one end but it was filthy with litter further along
Pantai Cahaya Negeri. One of the hotels on this beach, Bayu Beach Resort, claims this is Port Dickson's best beach and I think I would agree. It has a broad expanse of fine white sand and the sea water looks clean. The beach is a bit lacking in eating outlets and facilities unless you are staying in one of the resort hotels lining the beach but there is a food court opposite the Bayu Beach Resort.
Teluk Kemang/Sri Purnama. I have linked these beaches together because it is not clear where one starts and the other one finishes. Teluk Kemang is the busiest and most popular of Port Dickson's beaches partly because of the street market atmosphere in the stalls in front of the beach and the wide variety of food stalls and restaurants. The beach itself has orange sand and the sea water quality is not bad. There are plenty of water sports vendors here. There is a big carpark but it gets very busy at weekends.
MELAKA
A quaint city with an abundance of breathtaking sights and rich heritage, Malacca is easy to get around on foot or trishaw to explore the many places that make it unique. As the unofficial historic capital of Malaysia, Malacca’s most prominent contribution to the Malaysian cultural landscape is the Baba-Nyonya or Peranakan culture.
Possessing an eclectic blend of customs, traditions, food and lifestyle, the Peranakan still thrives in Malacca with a mix of old and new with historical buildings standing side by side with ultra modern shopping centres. From Ayer Keroh’s lush greenery to the Malacca City’s urban landscape, we have found our top ten places in Malacca that no visitor should leave out on their travel itinerary.
A’Famosa is more than just quick photo stop opportunity for tourists. Built in 1511, the settlement used to sprawl across a whole hillside but now only a lone gate (Porta de Santiago) remains. One of the oldest surviving European architectural remains in Asia; it is set beside the Istana ke Sultanan on Jalan Kota.
A’Famosa is perhaps Malacca’s best known sightseeing spot. Originally constructed by Alfonso de Albuquerque (who led the Portuguese invasion on the Malacca Sultanate), the remains of the fort is now a crumbling whitewashed gatehouse and is located downhill from St. Paul’s Church.
Structure of A'Famosa
In the 16th century A’Famosa housed the entire Portuguese administration, including its hospitals, five churches, elongated stockades and four key towers. One tower was a four-storey keep; the others were an ammunition storage room, captain’s residence and an officer’s quarters. The rest of the bastion comprised of townhouses clustered inside the fortress walls. The fort was expanded in 1586 to accommodate Malacca’s growing population.
JONKER STREET
Jonker Street is a small street in Chinatown in the city centre. Along Jonker Street there aren’t a lot of sightseeing opportunities unless you count the noisy Chinese New Year song-and-dance show that takes place this time of year. In fact the only attraction worth getting a quick glimpse of is the historic mausoleum of Hang Jebat – named after the second most skilful of a band of five warriors. The exact age of this grave is unknown but its Acehnese design shows that Jebat was given a warrior’s burial despite his murderous rampage and inglorious death at the palace.
Christ Church Information
Christ Church is located near to Malacca’s Chinatown centre. Across the bridge from the Jonker Street, it is one of the most popular sightseeing attractions in the Stadthuys area. A lot of colourful trishaws (You can pay to ride it) and directly opposite is the Historical Museum and Ethnographical Museum.
The area is stepped in Baba Nyonya culture with opulent ‘Baba merchants’ houses and elegantly-conserved Nyonya restaurants that line the constricted roads. Christ Church is small – once inside, right beside the front doors there is a long table with brochures and religious paraphernalia for sale set up. There are about ten rows of pews before the main altar and the whole place has old light fixtures and plenty of worn-but-well-kept tiles.
Besides its commemorative purpose, Christ Church was constructed due to the fact that when the Dutch first conquered Malacca, they had no place of worship other than St. Paul’s Church, a small chapel built on St. Paul Hill.
Later on, when the British took over Malacca they added a weathercock and bell to Christ Church and transformed it from a Protestant church into an Anglican one. Entrance into the basilica is free; it is not a big building and the interior is dark yet cosy, with dark polished wooden pews that face the altar and large timber crucifixes that hang on the walls. Meanwhile, outside the church is a beautiful collection of potted plants and a colourful group of trishaws lined up for tourists.
ST PAUL CHURCH
The ruins of St. Paul’s Church are at the summit of St. Paul's Hill. Built on the site of the last Malaccan sultan’s istana (palace), it was constructed by Portuguese fidalgo (nobleman) captain, Duarte Coelho, in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for saving his life during a storm at sea.
TAMING SARI
Melaka Menara Taming Sari (Taming Sari Tower) officially opened for business on the 18th of April 2008, Menara Taming Sari is the first and only gyro tower in Malaysia so far. Measuring 110 metres in height, its revolving structure offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Malacca town and beyond.
Located in the popular district of Bandar Hilir on Jalan Merdeka, only 3 minutes’ walk from Mahkota Parade Shopping Complex and Dataran Pahlawan Megamall, the tower is named after the Taming Sari keris, a mythical weapon said to possess mystical powers belonging to the legendary Malay warrior, Hang Tuah. Even the structure’s design follows the shape of the keris, with the peak of the tower resembling the its hilt.
Built using advanced Swiss technology, the tower’s structure is reportedly tough enough to withstand earthquakes measuring up to 10 on the Richter scale. Able to accommodate 80 people per viewing session, which lasts about 7 minutes, the glass cabin hypnotically revolves as it rises from the ground to the top of the tower.
Once it reaches the top, a breathtaking, sprawling view of Malacca as far as the eye can see, up to the Straits of Malacca, is clearly visible, especially in good weather, with the Melaka River running through the grand panorama below.

Travel guide To Visit Tourist Attractions In Alor Setar,Malaysia
Alor Setar of Malaysia is a splendid city with blooming economic prosperity. It is a tourist hub for entertainment, art, and, of course, mouth-filling eateries. The explorers get ample opportunities to explore the culture, from ancient structures to ancient methods of cultivating paddy. While in Alor Setar, you don’t have to worry about the travel guide as the entire city itself is an attraction to soak in, and finding a marvel is as easy as availing yourself of a Malaysia visa.
So, for an in-depth guide, here is a list of top attractions and the best things to do in Alor Setar, Malaysia
Zahir Mosque
The Zahir Mosque on Dataran Alor Setar is one of the best architectural masterpieces in Malaysia. It is also listed among the ten most beautiful mosques in the world. The five-doomed Morish structure exhibits the intricacies and decorations covering its white façade. While the blue mosaics sit above the entrance, Arabic calligraphy fills the walls.
The Clock Tower
The Big Clock Tower, or Menara Jam Besar, stands next to the Zahir Mosque. This magnificent structure dates back to almost the same time as the mosque. In the 1900s, the muezzin of the mosque rang the bells to call for prayer. Today, this clock still shows the time with the same beautiful legacy that stood for almost one hundred years ago.
Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Gallery
The Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Gallery, alias the Sultan Museum, offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of the former ruler of Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim. It includes everything from the late Sultan’s processions, official documents, and photographs to his luxury cars and watches collections. It is one of the most interesting places to visit in Malaysia.
Nobat Tower
The Octagonal Nobat Tower is listed among the true architectural gems of Malaysia. It is often confused with the big clock tower due to its similar structure. This three-tiered tower, which was once used by the Sultan to store his royal instruments, today, is one of the best places to visit in Alor Setar.
Balai Besar
Nestled in the heart of Alor Setar, Balai Besar is a traditional kampong-style building which once hosted state events like royal weddings and coronations. It was meticulously refurbished after its destruction by the invaders in the early 19th century. You can witness the triangular-shaped roof and two winding staircases connecting the open-air ground floor with the upper levels.
Istana Kuning
Istana Kuning, or the Yellow Palace, holds the title of being the official house of the Sultan of Kedah almost one hundred years ago. Once you enter the palace, you will see four buildings constructed within the palace compound in a bright royal yellow colour.
Alor Setar Tower
Located in the city centre, Alor Setar Tower is the second-largest telecommunication tower in Malaysia. This astonishing tower is a must-visit Alor Setar tourist attraction, offering scenic views of the gleaming skyline. There is an observation deck, souvenir shops, revolving restaurants, and even an amphitheatre to keep you entertained.
Alor Setar’s Chinatown

Yes, even Alor Setor has its own Chinatown, bustling with numerous restaurants, vibrant souvenir shops, and local retail shops. It is the best place to visit in Alor Setar if you are craving some authentic noodle dishes and dumplings to fill your tummies. Chinatown represents the Chinese culture in the city and offers a perfect opportunity to learn more about their traditions and customs.
Kedah State Art Gallery

The Kedah State Art Gallery, residing within the building built in the late 1800s, represents the rich heritage of Kedah culture. The house exhibits and galleries display antique weapons, jewellery, Chinese porcelain and furniture collections. You can also see paintings, calligraphy exhibits, woodcarving exhibits, photographs and more.
Kedah Paddy Museum
The Kedah Paddy Museum is a fascinating museum devoted to the growth and culture of Kedah’s paddy cultivation. It is also the fourth paddy museum in the world and features galleries, murals, and exhibits showcasing ancient techniques and modern methods of rice cultivation. You can also attend seminars and talks to learn more about the paddy history of Kedah.
The capital of Kedah, Alor Setar, has a lot more to offer. So, be sure to visit them all!

A Personal Observation
How The Winning Portraits Were Selected for KLPA – Fly-on-the-wall Feedback
The Kuala Lumpur International Photoawards (KLPA) exhibition for 2018 is currently open from 8th to 17th September at White Box, Publika. For those of you who are going to visit the exhibition, you may be wondering how the winners and finalists portraits were chosen by the judges. You may be curious to know perhaps because you may find that some of the photos are not generally what would be considered ‘beautiful’. Or you may be interested in submitting your photos for next year’s contest (which is typically around February to April). Knowing something about the judging process and what the judges are looking for would be advantageous if you intend to join the contest.
A few months ago, I was fortunate to be chosen to be the only independent observer at the judging session for this year’s contest by being selected via a lucky draw. As a fly-on-the-wall attending the judging session held over two days over the weekend of 19-20 May, I had the opportunity to see how the judges came to their decision in selecting the finalists and winners that are now being exhibited.
This is the tenth year of the KLPA and every year there are five judges. These were Silke Schmickl from Germany who is a curator at the National Gallery Singapore; Julia Durkin who is a photo festival director for the Auckland Festival of Photography in New Zealand; Ihiro Hayami, director of Tokyo Institute of Photography in Japan; Gwen Lee, co-founder of the Singapore International Photography Festival, and Fadhil Kamarudin, a lecturer at the Faculty of Art & Design, UiTM Malaysia. As in past years, the judges were a mix of local and foreign nationals but all with strong credentials.
It was an enlightening experience to spend two full days at KL Journal Hotel listening to the discussions and sometimes enthusiastic exchanges as the judges defended their favorite photos. Apart from the five judges gathered around a table with a 27-inch iMac monitor in the darkened meeting room, there were also three KLPA organisers including founder Steven Lee and Nurul Munira ‘Moon’ Rohaizan who I must thank for giving me this unique opportunity.
For the KLPA contest submissions, in previous years there were occasionally theme-specific categories, such as Stillness and Distance for 2016 and Defining Family for 2017, together with an Open category but this being the tenth anniversary, there was no specific theme this year so the scope was wide open. There was no chief judge so every judge had equal say although of course as in any group discussion there were a few who are more vocal than others but ultimately consensus prevailed.
There were 925 single photo submissions. Initial judging was by a process of elimination with the photos being projected and tagged in Lightroom as Yes, No or Maybe. The single images were quite quickly reduced to around 100 images as the judges were unanimous in rejecting the obvious ones that did not make the grade. After that began the more serious discussions about the quality of the selected images to whittle it down to 30 images. The description of the images was also delved into if an image was interesting enough to warrant further study but the first impression of an image in terms of subject and technical quality was of paramount importance. There were times an image was interesting enough but the judges quickly lost interest if the image didn’t say anything beyond being a good portrait.
A similar process was conducted for judging the photo stories of which there were 120 submissions. A photo story for KLPA submission should be between 5 to 12 images. The difference in judging was that the titles and descriptions were much more critical compared to judging the single images. The stories behind the photos had to add real meaning to the photos. This was where a well-written description made a significant difference in getting the attention of the judges. Who, what, when, where, why and how should be sufficiently described the photo. A catchy or insightful title also helps instead of one that only describes what the viewer can already see. After the first round of elimination, about 40 photo stories made the cut.
Then on the second day, the finalists and winners were chosen. After deciding on the finalists, there were more heated debates as judges first came up with their own short list of at least 5 images. A few strong images readily stood out as contenders by being the common choice among many of the judges. Finally, the most difficult part was for the judges to defend their choices and find a common ground to arrive at the winners as well for the ranking for both the singles images and photo stories.
I understand that many photographers who have seen the photos of the KLPA finalists and winners over the years would immediately be struck by what seems like odd choices being selected and may be puzzled why some of the photos were chosen. I would say that this could be primarily due to the fact that salon photography, which has been widely practiced in Malaysia for a long time, tends to promote the beautiful as well as compositionally and technically excellent images as the main benchmark for what makes for a great image and the main criteria for selection for local contests and exhibitions. However, the photos selected for KLPA tends toward photography that is more representative of what is being exhibited in photo exhibitions in art galleries internationally. The background of the judges, who are familiar with curation for international exhibitions, is an indication of the type of images that they tend to favor. These are not photos that are merely eye candy, beautiful for the sake for showing beauty, but photos that represent something deeper, making a personal statement, highlight something newsworthy or depicting a different angle to a common subject.
In the first elimination round, images would be reviewed quickly so it is the impactful, unusual or quirky images that tended to attract attention but then again images that were too weird to the point of not making sense were also rejected. Striking the right balance means that images should be intriguing enough to pique the judges curiosity so that they want to know more about the subject.
Judges were also quick to discard images that were considered glamorous or too commercial, looking like fashion shots or staged purely for its aesthetics. Wedding photos and studio shots, especially with plain backgrounds, were also quickly out of contention. Of course, compositionally weak images, not correctly framed, with distracting backgrounds would be dismissed even if the actual portrait itself was good.
Processing of the images that was overdone was another feature that the judges were quite opposed to. However, it is not that post-processing was not allowed but it should suit the images and not be too obvious that it overshadows the subject. That being said, the judges can sometimes excuse a slight lack of technical quality in preferring a powerful and meaningful image over one that is purely technically excellent.
Photos that are too clichéd or have recurring themes also tend to be rejected as being too repetitive. An observation was made that there were many submissions of photos of hair as a prominent subject. Just because photos of people with unique hair featured in previous winners’ photos, submitting similar photos isn’t always the best strategy when others are thinking the same. Being unique stands a much better chance of being selected.
Lighting and posing the subject well is very important and slight nuances of facial expression conveying emotion can make or break an image. In terms of the presentation of the facial expression, the tendency has been toward the deadpan aesthetic which seems to be popular internationally. I suppose smiling for no apparent reason makes it look like a holiday shot. Staging is not frowned upon as long as there is a purpose to it and relates to the backstory of the photograph and not merely to compose a beautiful image purely for that in mind.
KLPA is a portraiture photo contest but the definition of portraiture accepted by the judges is quite wide and is open to interpretation so it is not just the classic close-up or three-quarter shot of a person facing the camera. More often it would be an environmental portrait shot which creates a story together with the accompanying title and description. In terms of definition, the images could overlap with what would be considered photojournalistic, travel, street, conceptual or even landscape photography as long as there is an element conveying a sense of people in the images with the environment playing a supporting role and does not overwhelm the portrait of the person depicted in the photo.
However, for the photo stories category, there is some liberty as to how the photos can qualify as a portraiture series since although not every single photo needs to have a prominent portrait of a person, the photos overall should give the viewer a deeper sense about the person, their situation and the place they inhabit. It’s a fine balance because including too few portraits in the series will also get the photo story rejected.
Submission for the photo stories is more difficult than the single images since it is not just the selection of photos that are important but sequencing of the images is key. A simple linear sequence would not usually be the best choice. A strong establishing image, pacing the sequence by giving the stronger images a break and a suitable concluding image makes for a more interesting story. Alternatively, a typological sequence, for example, something supposedly as simple as passport photographs, is another type of photo story that the judges liked but it must be accompanied with a really strong backstory.
Although the maximum number of photos for the photo story is 12, sometimes fewer images can make for a stronger story. A series sometimes failed to be selected just because it included photos which were not as compelling or did not tie in well with the overall story. Had the story been 7 images instead of 10, the judges would have liked it better. In this case, less is more.
Please note that the above comments are merely my personal observations and what I gathered as I witnessed the judging process this year with these particular judges. It obviously would be somewhat different from year to year with different judges but having followed KLPA since its inception 10 years ago and seen the photos of the finalists and winners over the years, I hope the points I have noted would be beneficially for all of us in seeking to tailor our photography towards the types of photos suitable for submission for KLPA. For those who are keen on submitting your photos next year, you would well be advised to download and study the past years’ exhibition catalogues which are all available online at https://www.klphotoawards.com/past-winners. Good luck!

Those that have married in to the Royal Families since 1800
Norway
Sonja Haraldsen born on 4th July 1937
Sonja was born in 4 July 1937 at Red Cross Clinic in Oslo, the daughter of clothing merchant Karl August Haraldsen and Dagny Ulrichsen
Her siblings were Haakon Haraldsen (1921–2016), Gry Henriksen (1924–1971) and Karl Herman Haraldsen (1929–1936, who died in a boating accident).
She grew up at Tuengen Allé 1B in the district of Vinderen in Oslo and completed her lower secondary schooling in 1954. She received a diploma in dressmaking and tailoring at the Oslo Vocational School, and a diploma from École Professionnelle des Jeunes Filles (a finishing school) in Lausanne, Switzerland. There, she studied accounting, fashion design, and social science. She returned to Norway for further studies and received an undergraduate degree (French, English and Art History) from the University of Oslo.
Sonja became engaged to then Crown Prince Harald in March 1968. They had been dating for nine years, although their relationship had been kept secret because she was a commoner. The Crown Prince made it clear to his father, King Olav V, that he would remain unmarried for life unless he could marry her. This would in effect have put an end to the rule of his family, and likely to the monarchy in Norway, as Harald was the sole heir to the throne.
Faced with having to choose one of his relatives from the Danish Royal Family, the Dukes of Schleswig-Holstein or even the Grand Dukes of Oldenburg as his new heir in place of his son, Olav V consulted the government for advice and, as a result, the couple was wed on 29 August 1968, at Oslo Domkirke in Oslo. She thus acquired the style of Royal Highness and the title of Crown Princess of Norway.
As crown princess she represented the royal family at various engagements and travelled extensively in Norway and abroad.
In 1972 she was involved in establishing Princess Märtha Louise’s Fund, which provides assistance to disabled children in Norway.
She has taken active part in large-scale initiatives to raise funds for international refugees and spent time in the 1970s visiting Vietnamese boat refugees in Malaysia. From 1987 to 1990, Crown Princess Sonja served as Vice President of the Norwegian Red Cross. She was responsible for the organisation’s international activities. She took part in a Red Cross delegation to Botswana and Zimbabwe in 1989.
Queen Sonja’s School Award was established in 2006 and is awarded to schools who have "demonstrated excellence in its efforts to promote inclusion and equality
Sonja established the Queen Sonja International Music Competition in 1988. It was originally for pianists, but in 1995 the competition became only for singers. The jury consists of diverse authoritative figures in opera and the winners receive a cash amount and prestigious engagements at Norwegian music institutions.
She is a longtime avid photographer and has a keen interest in art. She is a printmaker, and held exhibitions with artists Kjell Nupen and Ørnulf Opdahl in 2011 and 2013.
The Queen Sonja Nordic Art Award was established in 2011 with Tiina Kivinen from Finland being the first recipient in 2012. The prize will be awarded every other year.
In 2017, The Queen Sonja Art Stable was opened, a venue which will function as a scene for arts and culture.
Following the death of King Olav V on 17 January 1991, Sonja became Norway's first queen consort in 53 years. Queen Sonja accompanied King Harald V when he swore his oath to uphold the Constitution in the Storting on 21 January 1991. It was the first time in 69 years that a Norwegian queen had been present in the Storting.
Since his accession, Queen Sonja has accompanied the King to the formal opening of the autumn session of the Storting and the reading of the Speech from the Throne. In accordance with their own wishes, the King and Queen were consecrated in Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim on 23 June 1991. Following the consecration, the King and Queen conducted a 10-day tour of Southern Norway. In 1992, the entire Royal Family conducted a 22-day tour of Norway’s four northernmost counties.
The Queen accompanies the King on official state visits abroad. She acts as the hostess when foreign heads of state officially visit Norway. In 2005, Queen Sonja became the first queen ever to visit Antarctica. The Queen was there to open the Norwegian Troll research station in the country's Antarctic dependency, Queen Maud Land. The Queen flew in on one of the Royal Norwegian Air Force's C-130H Hercules transport aircraft, landing at Troll Airfield.
The Queen is appointed a Rear Admiral in the Royal Norwegian Navy and a Brigadier in the Norwegian army. She has undergone a basic officer training course and has participated in exercises

Melissa is a perfectionist, both at work, in life and in planning her wedding. But fate had a different stroke of luck installed for this lovely couple despite them being 110% prepared. Alvin fell ill the morning of the wedding, resulting in a 2-hour delay in the morning ceremony as he had to detour to the hospital. After a stressful morning, the wedding reception was almost cancelled when Alvin had to go back again to the hospital in the afternoon. Just an hour before the guests were scheduled to arrive, a ‘hazardous’ thunderstorm flooded the stage and if that wasn’t bad enough, a stroke of lightning killed one of the projector systems, leaving the wedding coordinators and waiters in frantic ‘rescue’ mode.
The evening however, ended on a totally different note.
Looking back, all the stress was well worth the result especially for such a loving couple. Ultimately, Alvin and Melissa realised all these were immaterial and what mattered is the love they have for each other and the family and friends who were there. The Chinese have a figure of speech – that the rain and thunderstorm will help one better understand how infinitely rich and beautiful life is. It will help you see clarity, washing away things you once worry about, which are now of no importance compared to the ones that truly do.. something like that. Well, Alvin and Melissa went through that, literally… on their wedding day!
We always love the grooms who don’t shy away from getting their hands dirty in the arts and craft department. Alvin is one of those grooms and we love him to bits for being with the bride every step throughout the entire journey of preparing for their wedding including hand-tying, crafting and cutting all their wedding favours and otherwedding decoration items. We drew inspiration from Melissa’s pixie tattoo for the place cards and seating indicators. The wedding card was designed by one of Melissa’s bridesmaids, Foo Anne. Do you notice just how detailed Melissa is? Even the card’s caricature of the couple and car looked exactly like the Morris Minor they had for their pre-wedding photo shoot.
As avid collectors of lomo cameras and ‘happy things’, it was only natural that they had a fun photobooth at their wedding reception. Most people feel the need to spend a lot of money decorating their photobooth corner, but only the wise knows that what makes a photobooth interesting is when you have crazy, cool and fun-going people at your wedding, led by an awesome pair of host and hostess.
Grace, the wedding photographer probably summed up the wedding perfectly which resonated with how the rest of the bridal party and vendors felt. “What a totally memorable wedding this was for us and for Alvin & Melissa. It was at this wedding that I am reminded, at the end of the day, what matters is the marriage, not the wedding event itself. It is at weddings like these where I confirm my conviction… that being a photographer is one of the best jobs one could have. Capturing love between two individuals, helping them remember the day, how they felt… it makes me truly happy. I am overjoyed.”
After the thunderstorm subsided, the place transformed into an intimate, enchanting space.

What Is Event Photography?
Event-photography is an extremely lucrative business and one that has been steadily growing over the past number of years. If you adored this article and you simply would like to be given more info regarding event planning company malaysia nicely visit the web page. There are numerous photographers who specialise in events photography, and the aim of this article is to provide you with information on event photographers itself and how to become an events photographer. What Is Event-Photography? Event-photography is exactly what it sounds like; it is where a photographer photographs events. These can be anything from their best friend's wedding to photographing a child's birthday party. It is extremely popular, and more and more people are choosing to hire event photographer(s) for their functions. Event(s) photography can also include sporting events such as equestrian sports, horse shows, show jumping, motor sports, martial arts, football, water sports, cricket games, rugby games, and much more. Other events can include student events such as graduations and balls, and corporate events such as black tie dinners, seminars, conferences, and Christmas parties. Social events such as wedding receptions, school reunions, and engagement parties can also be covered under event(s) photographyer(s). What-Do-Event-Photographers-Offer? E-photography has become very popular, and many companies offer great products for you to choose from. One such product is called Greenscreen. This is where you can have yourself and your guests photographed and then superimposed onto various different themed backgrounds. So whether you want to see yourself on a yacht on the open sea, or standing in front of a famous statue or building, Greenscreen can do this for you. Event photos can also make you a little extra money too especially if you are receiving a commission for every photograph that is sold. This is great for parties, reunions, etc. Event photo's has really progressed over the last number of years, and all event photographers now use up to the minute equipment that allows them to print off your photographs during your event. Many event photographers will also attend your function free of charge, which means that all you and your guests have to pay for is the photographs that they want. Top-Tips-For-Event-Photography If you enjoy taking photographs and would like to get into eventphotography, here are some great tips to ensure that you successfully cover an event each and every time. When deciding on a camera to use for the event, you should consider purchasing a camera that allows for continuous shooting. This will allow you to capture all the great moments of any event especially sporting events. Most new cameras will have this feature, so you won't have to purchase a really expensive camera when starting out. Make sure that you know all the features on your camera and how to use each one of them before photographing any event. Practice taking different types of photographs well before the event. If you are serious about event photography, then knowing everything about your camera is essential. When doing event photography at Christmas parties or other celebrations, make sure that you change the focus of your photographs as you go along. Try to take some photographs from different angles to get a different look. In event photography, just like any other photography, different lighting will require a different approach. Al lot of event photography takes place at night time, so make sure that you practice taking pictures and familiarising yourself with the different light settings on your camera. You should try to avoid using the flash all the time. Sports events can be quite tricky to cover, and the top tip here for event photography is to push the shutter on your camera nearly all the way down just before you plan to take your photograph. This can help overcome shutter lag, which can be quite common on digital cameras. You should try to become as familiar as you can with the sport, so you know when the action is going to take place. If you are at a private event or in a public building, make sure that you get permission before taking any photographs. Most companies will have rules and regulations in relation to photographs, so be sure to check these out first. If you have been booked for event photography, you should always try to familiarise yourself with the layout of the venue beforehand. Try to visit the venue if you can, as this will give you the chance to get the feel of the place and see where the best spots are for getting the best pictures. The last thing to say about event photography is, relax and enjoy yourself. Even if you are the official photographer for the event, it doesn't mean that you can't enjoy yourself too. The more you relax and enjoy yourself, the more it will show in your photographs. Finding A Wedding Videographer Prices of production studios vary by region. Metro rates are often higher than suburban rates. Prices also change depending on the complexity of the job, the amount of equipment and personnel needed, and the studio time spent to edit and finish the video. The biggest factor in pricing among videographers is their experience. Not all videographers can claim they have enough experience in creating wedding videos. They may be great in producing videos of other genres, but they may not have the savvy needed to get the wedding video done according to your requirements. You also have to remember that bigger video production companies are not necessarily better than smaller studios. In fact, smaller studios can give you a better client experience by allowing you to be more involved with the project. Consider your wedding video as an investment. Once you get old and mellow, you can go back and watch a great product, because you spent more time, effort, and money on it. Memories are all that we have in the long run; that is why it is a must to preserve them through videos.

The Elusive Miss Trinket
Haymitch Abernathy was pulled out of his self-imposed retirement by the Trinkets with a request of utmost urgency. [Hayffie AU]
The Elusive Miss Trinket: Chapter 6
Haymitch decided that the weather here was fickle. It started pouring rather heavily the moment they entered the car and not ten minutes later, it stopped only for the sun to shine as ferociously as ever.
He pulled the flask from his pocket only to put it back, thinking it might not be appropriate to do so in someone else’s car.
“I'm from Helen, Georgia,” he told her, having stalled long enough. “There’s nothing much to me, nothin’ interesting. Used to own a business with a friend, Chaff, and uh, thought that was over until recently. I thought I was out… got pulled back in,” he threw that reference at her and she nodded with a knowing smile. “I’ve got geese back home to fill my time.”
“Such a peculiar choice of pet,” she commented. “This business that you thought you were out of, is that the reason you’re here?”
“Yeah,” he nodded.
“That reference makes me think what you’re doing might have a dangerous edge to it. Is it? I cannot imagine why anyone would risk it here. Are you involved in something drug related? Because if you are then I have to warn you that that carries the death penalty and I would like to cease all contact with you right now. I’ve built a life for myself here and you will not disrupt it,” she added.
Her question certainly drew a dirty look from their driver.
Haymitch chuckled.
“Nothing like that, sweetheart. Calm you overactive imagination. What I do ain’t dangerous, at least not anymore, especially not this one. Doesn't seem dangerous to me," he gave her a once over but she didn't seem to catch his meaning. "This job is the first that I had to fly out of the States for.”
“Isn't that a good experience to have?" she offered him a smile.
“What’s your story, sweetheart? How'd you end up here?"
XxX
The humidity that encased the city-island after the rain was almost unbearable. Within minutes of stepping out from the car, he had already begun to perspire. Effie, he noticed, came prepared with a handheld fan and an umbrella.
"What exactly are you looking for?"
"An outdoor wedding venue, as I've told you," she informed him. "I do have a place in mind that I want to recommend my clients. So right now I am more interested in scouting for places where my clients might be able to have an outdoor photoshoot."
Haymitch snorted derisively.
"I thought you're a boutique. That means only wedding clothes, yeah?"
"I started out as such but I have since moved on to bigger things. I now provide a comprehensive wedding package. Wedding is a stressful time - "
"Wouldn't know," he muttered.
" - so what I aim to do is to take that stress off from the bride and groom which would leave all the planning to me – venue, photography, wedding invitation cars and cake, door gifts. Everything. "
"You could just say wedding planner," he retorted.
"When I started, I focused more on customising and tailoring wedding clothes. I didn't dare do more because... Well, the culture for one! I had to watch and learn. Slowly, I ventured out when I began to get an idea of how things are done. For example, do you know that for some here, there is a henna night two days before the wedding?"
Her voice had taken on a slightly higher pitch in excitement.
"No, don't know anything 'bout that."
It was a mistake because she seemed eager to share the knowledge with him and he quickly realised that Effie Trinket could talk without stopping for breath.
"I have been to one quite recently. What an experience, truly," she exclaimed. "It is a pre-wedding celebration so a henna artist will be called to decorate on the hands and feet of the bride to be. Purely aesthetic, I should think. The bride’s female friends and relatives are invited too for the henna to be done on their hands. I do not provide that service, of course, but what I quickly realised was that I could send photographers and videographers down for the event. It is the same with the Chinese wedding tea ceremony. That is how I get into the business - I do what I can where I can. I have to play it smart. I have contracts with different wedding vendors and together, I provide a comprehensive package."
Haymitch nodded where appropriate as he walked next to her. They had just passed a row of shop houses and restaurants with an outdoor setting, which was currently empty because of the heat, when a call for prayer rang out in the vicinity.
Without missing a beat, she switched from talking about her wedding services to an unofficial appointed tour guide and gestured to a general direction behind him.
"Sultan Mosque is over there. It is considered one of the most important mosque here and a national monument," she explained. "That's the one with the gold dome, the crescent moon and star. Now come along, we have a schedule to keep to."
She led the way, walking along foot paths and crossing roads before they finally emerged on a one-way lane.
Haji Lane, he read the green street sign.
The stark contrast between the roads he just left behind and the long, narrow alley he just stepped into was glaring. Where there were the usual clean and empty painted walls, the walls here were decorated top to bottom with art and graffiti. Even the walls of the shophouses were painted in varying different colours. It made the stretch of lane popped out and it was eye-catching.
"One of my clients requested something... hipster," Effie explained. "What do you think?"
"Uh... Looks trendy enough to fit the bill," he muttered, not all expecting her to ask for his opinion on the matter.
"I certainly thought so," she beamed. "Take a look at that letterbox... How vintage. The area and background makes for a nice place to have a pre-wedding photoshoot. It is unlike the rest of modern Singapore. The architecture is inherently different."
He could see that without her having to point it out.
"Oh, but on second thought, you can find the same type of shophouses at Chinatown and Little India too but as I've told you, the 'trendy' factor... This place has it."
"Right."
"I noticed your flask while we were in the car," she commented out of the blue. "If you enjoy your drinks and if you're one for a night life, there are plenty of bars around this stretch of road. Wouldn't that be a good opportunity for you to meet other people – tourists and locals alike?"
"Not interested," he waved the suggestion away. "You come here often?"
“Only when I crave for Mexican food,” she answered and it was only when he saw the twinkle in her eyes that he understood that she was teasing. “They do have Mexican food just around the corner. I came across it about six months after I came to Singapore. If you’re feeling adventurous, by the main road, there is a restaurant that allows you to dine in complete darkness.”
“Why would I do that?”
“To enhance your other four senses, of course,” she deadpanned. “Your olfactory senses when you get a whiff of the food, your sense of touch,” she went on and rested her hand on the skin of his arm. “Your hearing…”
“I get the point,” he interrupted and moved his hand away.
"This place attracts the young like a moth to a flame. There are numerous café that sprouted here and these youngsters are often café-hopping. You will also meet fashionista here looking for exotic products with a little taste of eccentricity. Not truly my style."
He eyed her skeptically.
"You know a lot about this place," he commented.
"I did my research once and I observe," she threw him an indulgent smile. "By that junction there, if you walk further down, you’ll be in Arab Street. That is where I purchase the textiles and fabrics necessary for my wedding gowns. There are all types of textiles that you can find here that are imported from Thailand, India, Europe, just to name a few. I was even told that some members of the royal family from Malaysia and Brunei would drop by to get theirs from the very same shop that I bought mine. Imagine that!" she trilled and laughed quietly, covering her mouth with her hand. "But that could also be dear Mr. Ahmed bragging. Would you like to take a look at the shop sometime?"
Not really, he wanted to say but he merely shrugged in response.
She deemed his answer satisfactory enough because she did not press him on it. Instead, she wandered off to one of the graffiti walls. Haymitch took the chance while she was busy surveying the area and making notes on her tablet to snap a photo of her, under the pretense of taking a photo of the scenery, of course, just in case she caught him in the act.
He sent that photo of her to her parents as proof more than anything else, that he had found and met her. He sent the same to Chaff and Beetee too, for their record.
Then he snapped photos of the sceneries, for real this time, and texted it to the kids back home.
It was then that his phone chimed with an incoming text message.
Let me speak to my daughter – LT.
Can’t - will blow my cover.
Just as he responded, another came in from Effie's father.
You've done well, Mr. Abernathy. Now that Lysandra and I have sufficient proof that you are indeed with her, we shall arrange for young Prim to meet her tutor – ST.
He could only stare at the screen in disbelief. That man had a lot of nerve and Haymitch was quickly growing annoyed.
That wasn’t the deal. She’s supposed to have a tutor already.
He was not aware that they were withholding Prim's education based on his progress with their daughter.
"Haymitch..." she touched his arm gently. "Is everything alright? You are glaring at your phone as if it had personally offended you."
“Just somethin’ back home,” he grumbled. "You done here?"
If she was taken aback by his abrupt dismissive tone, she did not show it.
"I have to admit, I do find you curious," she lamented.
"That's not the sort of thing you tell people, yeah?"
"I tend to speak my mind,” she admitted the through.
Her fingers grazed his upper arm fleetingly to guide him down Baghdad Street, passed the rows of white tents which she told him would be for the night market in a few hours before they emerged down the same lane where he first saw the mosque.
“I believe you are the kind of man to appreciate honesty, are you not, Haymitch?"
He could only describe that as a playful grin when her lips curled upwards and she turned slightly to look back at him over her shoulder.
Haymitch realised he was staring but the way she carried herself with confidence, the way she acted, the things that came out of her mouth fascinated him and she found him curious? That comment about honesty made something in him twinge painfully, as if she was trying to hint at something deeper.
Perhaps she knew.
Or perhaps, it was his guilt twisting her words. He was playing her right now and at some point, he would have to tell her the truth about who he is and what he was sent to do.
"You never answered my question," Haymitch pointed out when he caught up with her.
“What was it?” she asked politely.
“What’s your story? Why'd you decided to set up shop here?”
“That corner shop sells very good tea or so I’ve heard,” Effie pointed, evading the topic.
That didn't interest him.
“Got somethin’ to hide, sweetheart?” he pressed. "Now you're makin' me curious."
Let me know what you think! What are your thoughts on Stefan Trinket slyly handling Haymitch through Prim? What do you think of Haymitch's and Effie's unplanned outing? I hope you like the chapter and thanks for reading!
Funfact: The 'Sultan' in Sultan Mosque means king in the Malay language (which is my mother tongue). Also that bit about the members of the royal family buying fabric from a shop in Arab Street was something my grandparents told me when I was young. I don't know if it's true but everything there is expensive so it could be. The tea stall exist and sells the best teh sarbat, imo.
I’ll attach photos of the places I mention at the end of the post from now on. I wrote this chapter last week and as it so happen, my friends asked me out for dinner at Haji Lane yesterday, so I took the photos of it myself (which means the quality sucks and the photos doesn’t turn out nice but you can google too :)))
This was my cousin’s henna night last year, prior to her wedding. Two of those are my hands!
One of the buildings at Haji Lane.
Another one.
After 6 pm, the street of Haji Lane & Baghdad Street will be closed to vehicles so you can leisurely stroll down w/o worrying.
Sultan Mosque. Sorry, the photos just won’t rotate properly on here???
I have no photos of Arab St or Baghdad St! Theses three places are often crowded with tourists and locals. I hope the visual help. :)
