No actually in all honesty I feel like last time I went to India at 12 I had a tiny bit of impostor syndrome but was mostly very comfortable there, whereas in the ensuing 10+ years, I've somehow gotten really bad impostor syndrome about being Indian at all and have managed to gaslight myself into thinking that I have no knowledge of anything to do with being Malayalee, which is....truly fascinating, to say the least. Anyways needless to say that the second I got off the plane is Trivandrum I was immediately cured of that notion :')
#like yeah okay i am not malayalee in the way that so-and-so is or i'm not indian like so-and-so else but that's irrelevant#my mom is american i am also american but that doesn't preclude me from also being malayalee#doesn't mean that i need to feel like a stranger in kerala and in fact i did not feel like a stranger at all#before this trip i was reading darius the great is not okay (which i just sort of picked up at the library by chance)#but i was reading it and was like hmm this is a good pre-going-to-parent's-home-country-mixed-race-kid-experience read#but also i wanted to bop him on the head and be like you fool you belong#and lo and behold what should happen in kerala was me getting bopped on the head and told you fool you belong#perce rambles#i'll post some pictures and stuff here and on my main once i get my life together a bit more

Ka Bodyscapes (2016, dir. Jayan Cherian)
#still not entirely sure what my thoughts are on this film#interesting watching experience though. much to think about#i feel like sometimes the political message was a little too heavy-handed in a way that felt counter-productive#but it was also a movie that set out to make a political statement so it does have to be judged within that frame#really really liked the actress who played sia and her character she was interesting#vishnu i feel like i didn't get a good grasp on. and idk that part was definitely more of a commentary on india than on kerala imo#and while it was an interesting critique i don't think kerala was the right place to set it. but also what do i know i don't live there#on the one hand i was glad it wasn't all about that but on the other hand i would have liked to see vishnu and haris interact more#very beautifullly filmed and framed movie though. and it did a lot of stuff really well i wasn't expecting it to be that good#yay for independent malayalee cinema :D#perce rambles#ka bodyscapes#also it's deeply embarrassing how few words i could pick up with english subtitles included. it was like ശരി and മനസ്സിലലോ
