"I've been looking everywhere for you," his voice was harsher than he intended as Steve crawled through the hole in the metal fence that night at the long-abandoned city pool. The water had been drained years ago, and was now filled with graffiti, frequented by skateboarders and often teens guzzling MD 20/20.

But right then, it was just you, sitting on the ledge, legs dangling into the open abyss. Just you, the night birds, and a few mosquitos dead set on feasting on your plasma like little bug ghouls.

"Did you hear me?"

"Yeah, I heard you. Why are you shouting?"

"Because I miss you," he closed the distance, shoving hands in the front pockets of his jeans, sunglasses pushed up into his hair.

You'd heard his motorcycle rumble by several times in the past hour, and wondered how long it would take him to pinpoint your location. With his stubborn tenacity, you knew he'd always find you eventually, no matter where in the world you went.

"I don't feel like talking right now," you mumbled, tucking your chin.

"That's okay," he dropped down onto the porcelain ledge beside you, bracing his hands on either side of his hips as if he were about to jump down into the concrete cavern. "I'll just stay here and protect you, in silence."

"I don't need---" you were about to protest the offered protection, but then his hand was on your thigh, giving it a gentle squeeze.

"Shhh, I know, alright?" He wet his lips, watching your mouth, craving a kiss, but sensing it was the wrong time. "Just let me....be here with you."

He laced his fingers behind his head and lay back on the concrete with a sigh, as if it were a mattress, ready to stay there all night if he had to.

"I see the big dipper," he chimed. You had to stifle a laugh, being that you knew he couldn't stay silent for more than a few seconds.

The sky was clear that night, the stars plentiful and bright. Eventually, you gave in, shifting back to lay with him.

"Here," he shifted up with a grunt to take his Coffin Kings leather off to offer it to you as a pillow, and you accepted. He made a move as if to put an arm around you, but then awkwardly shifted it away, sliding his hands behind his head again.

Adjusting yourself, you heard something crunch, like paper, and twisted to see there was something white sticking out of the pocket of his vest, poking into your jaw, just under his "TAZ" insignia.

"What's this?" You asked as you pulled it out, settling back to unfold it above you so it blocked your view of the sky.

"It's a photo," he cleared his throat. "Of you."

"Of me?" You asked softly, grinning when you realized it was, indeed, a photograph he'd taken of you a while back. You hadn't expected him to have a disposable camera in his hands that day when he shouted for you to turn and look at him, so your expression was a mix of distraction and shock.

You lowered the photograph to your chest and turned to look at him, but his gaze was fixed on the sky.

"I keep it next to my heart."

KITCHEN — MAISIE x HENRY

K ─ Kissing. How important are kisses in their relationship ?  Any favourite kind of kisses ?  Do they have any rituals involving kissing ( never leaving for work without kissing the other, always sharing a kiss goodnight, etc… ) ?

Kissing is very important in Maisie and Henry’s relationship. They love to give each other kisses and it’s one of the many ways they show affection towards one another. Maisie especially loves it when Henry mindlessly kisses the top of her head when they’re snuggled on the couch watching a movie.

I ─ Infidelity. Has any of them ever cheated on their partner ?  Whom have they cheated with ?  If not, is it something they could do ?  If yes, have they told them or has the other found out ?  Could they forgive and forget ?

Maisie is pretty boy obsessed and gets crushes easily but cheating is something that she’d never do. She would absolutely break if anyone ever cheated on her and she doesn’t want to be that person for anyone else. Henry is literally the love of her life and the mere thought of cheating on him makes Maisie physically sick. She would reject Aiden Jeon over and over again for Henry.

T ─ Turn ons & offs. What do they do to turn each other on ?  Is there something the other does that turns them off ?  Have they told them about it ?

Henry’s dirty talk French edition is something that will always turn Maisie on. She thinks he sounds incredibly sexy and it’ll always make her want to jump him on the spot. Seeing Henry with messy hair while wearing his glasses is also another turn on. There have been many instances where Henry’s been a little late to work because Maisie couldn’t keep her hands to herself.

C ─ Condoms. Do they use them ?  Do they have a preference ( color, flavour, etc… ) ? Have they ever had an accident ?  Would they continue anyway, if they’ve forgotten/run out of them ?

It was common for Maisie and Henry to use condoms when they first started dating but they don’t use them as often anymore. Maisie hasn’t been the same ever since she first had sex with Henry without a condom. She much prefers skin on skin contact and loves it whenever Henry finishes inside her.

H ─ Humour. Are they the kind to share a laugh during sex ?  Has something funny already happened to them ( breaking the bed, one of them falling off the couch, funny noises, etc… ) ?

Maisie is the one who tends to giggle during sex. There isn’t much humour going on between Henry and Maisie but sometimes, Maisie will let out a giggle because she’s so hopelessly in love with Henry. He’ll often ask her why she’s suddenly giggling and she’ll just say something stupid like ‘I can’t believe you’re actually my boyfriend’.

E ─ Experimenting. Are they willing to experiment new things ?  Is there something they’d like to try with their partner, but haven’t had the chance yet ?  Any experiments gone wrong ?

Maisie and Henry aren’t the kinkiest people out there, but they’re always willing to try new things if something piques their curiosity. Maisie’s still a little bit shy when it comes to suggesting ideas so it’ll take her time before she’ll tell Henry about it. Most of the time, their experimenting usually comes during the heat of the moment where one of them discovers something that makes the other feel good.

N ─ Nudes. Do they send them to each other ?  Do they save them on their phones ?  Do they keep them to themselves, or do they show them to their friends ?  Have they ever sent one to a wrong number ? 

Maisie likes to tease Henry by sending him spicy photos of herself. It took her a long time to do this because she was really shy and nervous about it. Most of the time, she isn’t fully nude. She likes to take mirror selfies whenever she’s wearing low-cut tops because she knows it’ll drive Henry insane. Maisie also tends to send Henry photos of herself wearing newly bought lingerie. She’ll send him the photos and casually ask him if he likes it or not.

I just finished the audio book of Our Hideous Progeny and it’s just as delightful of a story as it was when I first read it last year. I absolutely adore Mary as a character! Women can and should be little beasties. My gay little heart must know though, does Mary ever kiss Maisie and get a chance heal that part of her from when she had kissed Catharine as children and thought she was broken and wrong?

PS: I think about “perhaps, perhaps, perhaps!” A lot and it makes me smile

I hemmed and hawed for ages over whether to have Mary and Maisie actually kiss in that final scene; but no matter which way I looked at it, I simply didn’t feel they were ready yet. Mary, as you mentioned, is still very much wounded from her experience with Catherine, and I really couldn’t see her making the first move (or doing it so soon, at least) – and Maisie, I think, is still labouring under a huge amount of compulsory heterosexuality. They’ll figure it out eventually, but in my mind what follows canon is a 120k slowburn hurt/comfort romantic comedy of errors, in which Mary pines halfway across Europe and Maisie realizes that it is not, actually, a truth universally acknowledged that women are prettier than men and everyone wants to kiss their best friends with tongue, culminating in the two of them confessing their true feelings to each other on a candlelit balcony above the streets of Paris, returning home to live with Mr & Mrs Jamsetjee, and adopting a very small dog named Creature.

J — JEALOUSY : does your muse get jealous in a relationship?

maisie gets jealous very easily. it's gotten a lot better now that she's actually dating henry and she knows how he feels towards her, but it used to be a lot worse when she was still crushing on him. maisie would get really jealous whenever henry would talk about his ballroom partner back in france. she'd try to hide her feelings as best as she could, but the thought would literally occupy her brain for days on end. whenever someone would bring up the topic, she'd try her best to change the subject just because she didn't want to hear about his ballroom partner again. maisie also gets really defensive whenever someone asks if she's jealous.

O — ODE : does your muse have a way with words?

maisie isn't the most articulate person when it comes to expressing her feelings. she has no trouble coming up with words whenever she's talking about her interests, especially when it comes down to films, but she has a harder time trying to convey the way she feels. maisie honestly wishes that she could communicate with people using brain waves because she thinks it would be so much easier but unfortunately that's not possible. part of the reason why it took her so long to confess her feelings towards henry was because she just didn't know how to say it.

X — XOXO : does your muse use/ like pet names?

maisie loves being on the giving and receiving end of pet names. most of the time, maisie uses nicknames on the people closest to her and the names usually originate from inside jokes and aren't traditional nicknames at all. henry is obviously 'ratatouille', jacob gets called 'satan spawn', and she usually calls jude 'brother in law' or 'bestie' more than she calls him by his real name. these names are just a way she shows affection to those she cares about. maisie really likes being called by pet names too, especially from henry. he doesn't use them often, but maisie literally dies whenever henry uses french pet names on her. she'll sit there and giggle and blush and twirl her hair before she'll start kissing him all over.

I am desperate for you to know this was the best book I've ever read. It was such a real and honest experience of being a woman, Mary was so genuine and interesting, she never felt forced. It felt so well researched and intriguing. I kept having to put the book down to scream and growl and pant before I could bare to pick it back up. I was so invested. I couldn't look the book in the eye. I haven't cried like that in ages. I will probably never stop thinking about Mary and Maisie holding hands. You tore open my body, took out all my guts and bones one by one to expose my core before putting me back together and stitching me up. Nonbinary slay.
