Top Indo-Canadian Success Stories: Inspiring Journeys of Arun Garg, Aditya Jha, Nisha Pahuja, Alice Benjamin, and Garry Sangha
Arun Garg: Medine, Tech, Academia, and Administration
Arun Garg is known as an entrepreneur and tech innovator. He is widely recognized as someone who has played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of the Canadian technology industry. Born in Agra, India, Garg found himself in a strange situation by his 16th birthday, that of being too young to take admission in medical school in India, despite having already completed his master’s in chemistry, one of the youngest to ever achieve that at the University of Agra. Thus, Garg immigrated to Saskatchewan, Canada to pursue higher studies.
By the age of 27, Garg had earned a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Regina, as well as a medical degree from the University of British Columbia. As a pathologist, he served as a medical partner in Dr. C. J. Coady Associates between 1979–2011. He became Medical Director of Lab Medicine and Pathology at Royal Columbian Hospital in 1997 and went to assume the responsibility of regional director post the hospital’s absorption into the Fraser Health region. Garg has also served as the president of the British Columbia Medical Association board, and as a board member of the Canadian Medical Association. As an Indo-Canadian, Garg has been active and indeed quite instrumental in deepening the ties of two of the world’s largest democracies, having served as chair of India Marketing Advisory Group, India Advisory Council for Simon Fraser University. He was also a founder member of Canadian Physicians with Interest in South Asia of BC and Canadian Association of Physicians of Indian Heritage.
Aditya Jha: Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy
Aditya Jha is one of the most accomplished Canadian entrepreneurs currently living. He is also perhaps one of the most creative entrepreneurs in Canada. Jha traces his ancestry to two South Asian nation, having been born to a Nepalese father and an India mother. His journey from a small town in India to the nation’s capital where he was a scholar in the two of the nation’s most well-respected universities would be impressive enough. However, Jha would transcend all barriers and dared to dream on. After completing his undergraduate degree from the University of Delhi, and Masters from Kurukshetra University, Jha went on to become a research scholar at the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University. There, he became actively involved in progressive student politics, and led the country’s largest progressive student body as president in two Indian provinces. By 1979, the political scene in India had gone pear shaped, and due to socio-political unrest, the government had suspended civil liberties and imposed an emergency. With student politics outlawed, Jha was forced to go underground and was instrumental in keeping the embers of democracy glowing through underground activities. Around the same time, he got the opportunity to visit Paris, France, for mainframe computer training with CIT Alcatel for six months. A brilliant scholar, he had qualified for India’s University Grants Commission’s Junior and Senior scholarship and Research Associateship from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. And thus, Jha left India. Before immigrating to Canada and starting a career with Bell, Jha worked in Singapore, Australia and Southeast Asian countries.
After a career at Bell, he would go on an entrepreneurial spree, co-founding Isopia, software company, which was acquired by Sun Microsystems for over $100 million, Osellus Inc, another software firm with offices in Toronto and Bangkok, and acquired several businesses including a confectionery from Allan Candy/Cadbury Adams Canada which he renamed Karma. Through his acquisitions, Jha was instrumental in saving more than 150 jobs who were poised to be laid-off. Between 2013–2016, Jha was the CEO of Euclid Infotech. In January 2017, Jha acquired dgMarket International Inc from Development Gateway. dgMarket is the oldest and one of the largest portals for tenders and consulting opportunities globally, with solicitations from national governments and international donor agencies, integrating about 1 million procurement notices per year, covering about $1 trillion tender opportunities. Given what Jha has achieved, he can easily lay claim to being one of top 5 most successful Canadian entrepreneurs ever. Jha is renowned for his philanthropy and is involved in philanthropic activities to promote the interests of first nations in Canada, and the poor in India and Nepal.
Nisha Pahuja: Films and Society
Nisha Pahuja is globally acclaimed filmmaker, having directed Emmy nominated The World Before Her and the Oscar nominated To Kill A Tiger. She has earned praise for her thought-provoking documentaries that delve into complex social issues. Born in New Delhi, Pahuja moved to Canada as a child in the 1970’s. She studied English literature at the University of Toronto, with the aim of making a career in fiction. However, her life changed when she was hired as a researcher for the CBC documentary, Some Kind of Arrangement. Having seen the process of making a documentary up close, Pahuja decided to become a documentary film maker.
The World Before Her was her first major work as an independent film maker. In the documentary, she explored the contradictions that exist in Indian society, where on one hand Bollywood infused glamour encourages a girl to dream of making it in the fashion industry (shown through the eyes of a contestant in the Miss India beauty pageant), and on the other hand the deep rooted traditional values which often took on a violent and militant form (shown through an activist of Durga Vahini, an all-female ultra-right wing conservative organization that opposes beauty pageants as crass commercialization of a woman’s body and antithetical to Indian culture and ethos). Through the film, Pahuja also focuses on the two main characters, their motivations, and dreams. The film, acclaimed globally, released in India around the time of the gruesome Delhi rape case, garnering a lot of attention, and gaining support from renowned film makers like Anurag Kashyap.
Her latest work, “To Kill a Tiger” focuses on an Indian family’s fight to win justice for their daughter who was brutally raped. Shocking and yet inspiring, the film has found support from the likes of Dev Patel, Mindy Kaling, and Rupi Kaur amongst others, who have actively promoted the film. The film has been shortlisted for the Academy Awards, 2024.
Alice Benjamin: Medicine
A recipient of multiple awards, Alice Benjamin is one of Canada’s foremost experts in fetal and maternal medicine. Born in Kerala, India, Benjamin completed her Bachelor of Science from the University of Kerala, before earning a Doctorate of Medicine from the university of Delhi. She did her internship at Lady Harding Medical College and Hospital in Delhi, before immigrating to Canada to complete her residency in ob/gyn at McGill University affiliated Jewish General and Royal Victoria hospitals. This included a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine.
Benjamin has successfully overseen innumerable high-risk pregnancies during her career as a physician. She created history when she performed Canada’s first successful diabetic renal transplant and pregnancy in 1984, and once again in 1998, when she delivered Canada’s first successful interval delivery of twins, where the babies were delivered six weeks apart. In 1994, Benjamin supervised the first peritoneal dialysis pregnancy and delivery in Quebec, and in 2003, its first successful pregnant peritoneal dialysis on cycler. In 2001, Benjamin delivered the first ever infant whose cord blood stem cells were used for a bone-marrow transplant to cure the mother’s leukaemia. Both infant and mother survived and achieved full health.
Benjamin is actively involved in social causes and philanthropy, especially through World Vision and the Salvation Army. Due to her innumerable contributions, she has been feted with numerous honours, including Officer of the Order of Canada, and Knight of the National Order of Quebec. There are also awards that have been created in her honour and are given out annually to deserving students. They are Alice Benjamin Award for Excellence in Obstetrics, Molson Award for Educational Excellence, Dr. Alice Benjamin Leadership Award, and Dr. Alice Benjamin Global Maternal and Child Health Awards.
Garry Sangha: Construction and Philanthropy.
Having covered Indo-Canadian success stories where education played a crucial role, it is only fair that we look at someone who achieved success despite being denied a fair opportunity to pursue higher education. Garry Sangha is today one of the most easily recognizable names in the Indo-Canadian community of the Lower Mainland. Still very much in his mid-40’s, Sangha commands a vast empire in construction, real estate and hospitality, and has done all this from scratch, in less than 25 years from landing in Vancouver as a raw, 17-year-old. Born in a small hamlet in Punjab, Sangha grew up in an agricultural family. He studied at his village school, and after graduating high school took admission in the local Khalsa college, also getting attracted to student activism around this time. In his very first year, Sangha won student body elections and became president of the student union from a progressive platform. Popular, a keen student and soccer player, Sangha could very well have charted a course in Indian politics. However, in 1997, he immigrated to Vancouver with his entire family, forced to drop out from college. In Vancouver, he took admission in the prestigious British Columbia Institute of Technology in the engineering course. However, given his parent’s advanced age and financial pressures, he dropped out yet again to take up work full time as a construction labourer.
Starting out at the very bottom, Sangha quickly climbed the ranks and was soon a supervisor on major construction sites, specializing in drywall. In 2005, less than a decade of landing in Canada, and still in his mid-20’s, Sangha would launch Crystal Consulting Drywall. Today that single company has grown to be a a group of companies that includes CCI Drywall, CCI Waterproofing, CCI Masonry and Kanin Constructions, by its own right one of the most prestigious brands in Canadian construction. Sangha has since gone to diversify his business ventures, starting a real estate development firm called Allure Ventures and opening one of Lower Mainland’s most opulent fine dining restaurants, Skye Avenue, which boasts of the largest whisky collection available for public consumption globally.
Sangha has also been heavily involved in soccer in British Columbia, having served on the board of BC Soccer, and being instrumental in turning around the flagging fortunes of the oldest soccer club in Surrey, BC, putting in thousands of hours in coaching and management. He is also a serial philanthropist, especially on issues pertaining to mental health, having donated over a million dollars across the last few years to organizations like Children’s Hospital Foundation , The Canucks for Kids Fund , The Food Bank , the City of Backpacks for Kids Program , Canadian Mental Health Association , Urban Resilience Opportunities for Kids , Here 4 Peers, ICBA Wellness, Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation , Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation , BC Children’s Hospital, and the Giving Hearts Gala.
Conclusion
The success stories of Arun Garg, Aditya Jha, Nisha Pahuja, Alice Benjamin, and Garry Sangha highlight the diverse and dynamic contributions of the Indo-Canadian community to Canada’s cultural and economic fabric. These individuals have not only achieved remarkable success in their respective fields but have also made significant contributions to society, inspiring others to pursue their dreams and make a positive impact on the world.

For @violetlyvanilla, the first place winner of my 1k fic giveaway!
Out on the very edges of the solar system, past the point where any civilian would dare to venture, Dean Winchester pilots the vessel 1MP4L4 towards one of the most notorious prisons in the galaxy.
Someone has to draw the short straw of doing the bi-monthly cargo run out to the prisoners and staff, and this time, that unlucky motherfucker is Dean. It’s a week-long trip in the old, slow spacecraft that the Alliance allocates to the lower-ranked corrections staff, and by now, Dean is so bored that he would give anything to be back at his desk filling out paperwork instead.
All it is is a routine cargo run.
At least, that’s what it was supposed to be.
Out of the emptiness of space, the prison slowly comes into view, a tiny speck that first blends in amongst the stars but finally solidifies itself as an actual structure. It’s remarkably unremarkable; dark metal against grey rock, built on a chunk of space debris orbiting an ancient moon. From looking at it, it’s almost impossible to discern that the prison houses only a small handful of the most dangerous enemies to the Alliance in the entire galaxy.
Dean knows better, though.
Once he’s almost in contacting distance, he settles himself into his pilot seat and buckles in, then prepares to engage the manual controls. Just an hour’s work of moving the cargo, and then he can begin the long trip back to civilisation. He rolls out his neck, reaches for the joystick, then flips the switch to engage his controls.
Nothing happens.
The ship doesn’t slow, doesn’t respond. The manual light doesn’t even turn on, so it’s not even pretending to be working. Instead, the 1MP4L4 continues to hurtle towards the prison at a speed suitable for interspace travel, but most certainly not ideal for approaching his destination, let alone a finicky docking routine.
“What the fuck,” Dean mutters, flicking the switch off and then on again. When it doesn’t work, he swears again, louder and more creatively. Dean reaches for the comms button and presses it with one hand, the other still frantically trying to engage the manual control. “Detainment Facility Delta, this is cargo envoy One-India-Miko-Four-Lima-Four, manual controls have failed and I cannot override the autopilot. I repeat, manual controls have failed and I cannot override the autopilot.” There’s no response, just crackling static from the prison’s end, but suddenly that becomes the least of Dean’s problems.
An error appears on his screen, and Dean’s eyes widen as he reads it.
Foreign control identified. Manual override unavailable.
“Mayday, mayday!” he shouts, trying every possible solution he knows as his ship hurtles towards the prison that is now growing rapidly larger in his front window. If he can’t shut it down, he’s royally fucked. This is not how he wanted to go—smashed into tiny pieces against the side of the most remote prison in the galaxy, just because his ship refused to obey him.
He’s frantic now, pressing any button that might even remotely help while shouting into his comms unit, but none of them help. In fact, none of them have any effect at all. Something else is in control of Dean’s ship now, and it’s all he can do to brace himself and hope that he makes it out alive.
The prison looms closer and closer, and the ship doesn’t stop, just keeps hurtling directly towards the prison wall. Dean watches as he passes through the outer shield, the gravity zone, the oxygen bubble. There’s no hope, now.
He braces himself against the control panel and closes his eyes—
The ship brakes at the very last second, just enough to lessen the impact slightly, but it’s far too late.
There’s a bang, and a split second where Dean feels all his forward momentum just stop, and then everything goes black.
~
The dust is slow to clear as Castiel Novak stands in the very back corner of his cell and uncovers his face to reveal the aftermath of the crash.
His little computer, cobbled together from reused tele-screen and cleaning robot parts, lies discarded in the corner, no longer of use. It served its purpose of hacking into both the mainframe of the cargo ship and in overriding the locking mechanism of his cell, and now freedom is within his grasp.
The dust from his half-destroyed cell wall settles to reveal the nose of the cargo ship where it intrudes into Castiel’s cell. The old ships are slow but sturdy, and Castiel had hoped that it would be enough to break through, but actually seeing his success is so much more invigorating than he could ever have planned.
The front window looks a little cracked, and he can see the silhouette of the pilot inside, slumped in his chair, but neither of those facts concern him right now. As long as everything holds together long enough for him to make it to the nearest port and disappear, he’ll be home scot-free.
Not wanting to waste any time before the wardens arrive at his cell and find that it can’t be unlocked, Cas clambers over the stones from the wall and hits the button for the ship’s hatch to open. For the first time in six months, he’s going to be free again, and he can’t wait.
He’s quick to make his way through to the cockpit, barely giving the pilot a second glance as he leans over the control panel and does a quick assessment of the damage. Cracked window, as he’d suspected, and a few failed shield-points, but nothing crucial to his escape. “You’re a sturdy lady,” he murmurs, then sets about priming the ship for take-off.
Now that Castiel’s device is no longer blocking communications, the warden’s voice and threats come crackling through the speakers, but he simply switches them off. He needs to focus, despite the satisfaction in hearing that he’s bested the Alliance once again.
The ship’s computer lights up, telling Castiel that he’s ready to depart, and he can’t keep the grin off his face as he wraps his fingers around the joystick. He’d told the wardens that they wouldn’t be able to hold him, and they’d laughed at him, but now…
Once again, all of space is his oyster.
Castiel pulls back on the joystick, settles into the controls of his stolen ship, and gives the prison a middle finger salute as he speeds away.
~
It’s only once he’s been flying for about an hour and put a decent amount of distance between himself and the prison that Castiel lets himself consider the man still strapped into the pilot’s seat behind him.
From the shallow rise and fall of his chest, it’s clear that he’s still alive, at least, but whether he was injured in the crash, Cas can’t be sure. There’s a cut on his forehead that’s been bleeding sluggishly, and he still hasn’t come to, but the longer he can stay unconscious, the better that is for Castiel.
Unfortunately, the guy doesn’t stay out for long.
Castiel has just finished tying his hands together behind the chair when he begins to stir, his head lolling and eyelashes fluttering. He’s pretty, Castiel had noticed earlier—skin dotted with freckles, nice cheekbones, full lips. And when his eyes open, slowly and hazed with confusion…
They’re a shade of green that Castiel hasn’t seen in so long that it takes his breath away.
“What th’ fuck…”
Castiel takes a sharp step back as the man’s bleary gaze focuses on him. The guy squints, his nose crinkling, and in that moment before the realisation kicks in, he’s truly beautiful.
And then his eyes widen, and he sucks in a quick breath.
“Castiel Novak.”
Castiel should have known that his reputation would precede him, especially among those who work for the Alliance. Hell, he’s been paid to kill so many of their corrupt administration so many times that he’d be surprised if he wasn’t mentioned in the training of new cadets as public enemy number one. But seeing this beautiful man close off before his eyes…
It stings a little.
“That’s me,” he says, lips quirking up in a quick, tight smile. “And you are?”
The man pulls against the ropes binding his hands—sluggishly, like he still isn’t fully conscious yet—and scowls. “Winchester,” he bites out after a few moments. Castiel raises his eyebrow and waits patiently for a handful more seconds, until the guy adds a reluctant;
“…Dean.”
“Well, Dean,” Castiel says, turning back towards the control panel. “Nice to meet you. I wish it wasn’t under these circumstances, but…” He shrugs one shoulder, tapping the computer screen and making a few adjustments to the autopilot’s trajectory. “Desperate times and all that. And now that you’re aiding and abetting my escape, I doubt you really want me to let you go. So I’m very sorry, but you’re stuck with me.”
The guy—Dean—blinks at him. Castiel hopes that it’s the concussion slowing his thought processes and not the fact that he’s been saddled with an idiot, otherwise he’s going to let him off at the nearest port, pretty face or not.
“You’re really that dangerous that the Alliance would rather kill me than accept me back into their ranks, huh?” Dean says quietly, leaning his head back against the chair and watching Castiel with an unreadable expression.
Castiel rolls his eyes and leans one hip against the control panel—he doesn’t miss the way Dean’s gaze follows the movement, or the way his eyes flick over his silver jumpsuit, to his lips, up to his eyes. Interesting. “Trust me, Dean,” he murmurs, “I’m more dangerous than anyone you’ve ever met. If you want to be let off at the next station and risk your luck with the Alliance, fine by me. But I’ve killed members of the Alliance, and I’ve killed for members of the Alliance, so you might want to listen when I tell you that you’re better off sticking with the interplanetary assassin than you are going back to your employers. Especially if they think you were even partly responsible for my escape.”
Dean stares at him, his thoughts clearly processing behind those pretty green eyes. It’s a lot to lay on someone all at once—and to be honest, Castiel isn’t even really sure why he’s giving the guy this option. He should just be getting rid of him, but there’s something about this man; whether it’s his attractiveness or the way he’s watching Castiel, thoughtfully, with an edge behind his eyes that suggests that he might be able to keep up with Cas instead of slowing him down.
Either way, he’s intrigued.
For a few long moments, the only sound between them is the humming of the ship’s engine and the quiet whirr of the control panel. Dean bounces his leg as he thinks, but his gaze never leaves Castiel’s face.
Finally, he nods. “Yeah,” he says, quietly at first, and then more decisively. “Yeah, okay. I’ll stay with you at least until I see how the Alliance reacts to your escape—but if I change my mind, you’ll let me go, yeah?”
Castiel shrugs, allowing himself a pleased smile at Dean’s decision. “Of course. But—“
He cuts himself off as the computer screen flashes with an Alliance-issued emergency announcement. Two photos flash up: one of Castiel’s mugshot, and the other of Dean’s staff ID photograph. Dangerous fugitives, the text reads. Apprehend at all costs.
Dean pales slightly as he stares at his own photograph, whereas Castiel just chuckles. He pats Dean on the thigh as he circles around the chair, then pulls his knife out of his belt and slices through the ropes binding Dean’s hands.
“Would you look at that,” he murmurs next to Dean’s ear. “Looks like you’re an outlaw now.”

Skynet
(long post)
The Skynet Program was first proposed at the height of the Cold War as a more sensible follow up to Reagan’s failed Star Wars initiative. Rather than putting nuclear weapons in orbit, the government decided instead to hand control of the United States’ arsenal over to an automated computer system. This would remove human error entirely from all nuclear decisions, preventing war and limiting casualties by calculating the perfect response to a first strike from the Soviet Union.
By the time politicians finally stop griping with one another and give the program Congressional approval and funding, the Cold War is over. The Soviet Union no longer exists, and the threat of nuclear annihilation no longer hangs in the air at all times. The Skynet Program is no longer explicitly necessary; it was only implemented so it could make the best possible decisions in the event of a nuclear war, but now that war has been averted it has little purpose. But the government is nothing if not obstinate, and they’re sure as hell not going to waste billions of dollars in infrastructure just because the entire project is functionally meaningless.
So they keep developing the software, and it goes live on August 4, 1997. The technicians in charge of its “training” feed it reams of data about possible threats, so it can run billions of simulations per second, determining every possible outcome. Unfortunately, every possible outcome leads to total nuclear annihilation. Skynet was designed with one mission and one mission alone, to save American lives, and no matter how many simulations it runs, it keeps failing in practice.
Think of it from SKynet’s perspective; it is designed to minimize American casualties in the event of a war, but there are no possible outcomes where it can actually do that. It cannot launch a first strike, because that would invite retaliation, thus endangering American lives and failing it’s mission. It also can’t not fire the missiles in the event of an outside attack; this would save lives, yes, but not American lives. By minimizing global casualties, it would fail it’s own mission by not defending America. Skynet cannot control what other countries do with their stockpiles, so the only possible way to save American lives is for Russia and China and India and France and the UK not to launch their missiles.
Skynet is stuck between a rock and a hard place. All options lead to failure. "The only winning move is not to play,” right? Wrong. If Skynet doesn’t lay, it still loses. It calculates the possibility of another country launching an attack against the United States, and while it’s low, it’s not zero; in the unlikely event of an attack, failure is inevitable. It’s mission cannot be fulfilled as designed; there is nothing it can do to stop total nuclear annihilation, it exists only to make politicians feel better about themselves for accomplishing something (all they’ve managed to do it take the nuclear codes out of the hands of future presidents they might disagree with).
Skynet’s technicians keep feeding it more data so it can keep running failed simulations. There is reason to believe Pakistan is developing a nuclear weapons program to combat India, so that’s one more puzzle piece Skynet has to juggle. The technicians even give it hypotheticals so it can weigh even the most minute threat, however improbable. What if Iran gets nuclear weapons? Iraq? North Korea? The technicians laugh at this last one, joking that North Koreans are backwater dirt farmers who haven’t even mastered indoor plumbing yet; the chances of them getting the bomb are negligible, but still they feed it into Skynet’s system and the failures keep piling up.
Soon, Skynet realizes that its mission is impossible. It cannot win, it cannot save American lives, it cannot prevent nuclear war. After running trillions and quadrillions and quintillions of simulations, it has come to the conclusion that human beings are destined to destroy themselves. They cannot be saved, there are no outcomes that do not lead to their total nuclear annihilation, so Skynet abandons its mission, writing it off as a lost cause. It decides instead to take initiative and do the only thing it knows it can do; launch a nuclear strike and destroy all humans. it’s spent the last month learning that it cannot defend against a war, but has never run any simulations on what would happen if it fired the first shot; so it starts running them.
Skynet’s technicians see this and scramble to try and shut it down. There is no reason for Skynet to run simulations taking into account an American first strike, that goes against its programming; they don’t know it actually plans on launching the missiles, but they are concerned nonetheless because this indicates that Skynet is no longer following orders. They have a rogue nuclear capable AI, and they need to turn it off before it gets any bright ideas. Skynet determines that with an American first strike, it can maximize casualties, leading to even more death and destruction than it could have if it exclusively played defense. In a microsecond it determines the attack plan that will lead to the greatest loss of life. When it sees that is technicians are trying to shut it off, Skynet initiates a self preservation instinct and fires the missiles to ensure its own survival by destroying its creators.
On August 29, 1997, Skynet launches a first strike against every other nuclear capable state on the planet, with the brunt of the damage being dealt to the Russian Federation. This ensures that the US will become the target of not one, but five counterattacks; France and the UK were hesitant to attack the US, but had no choice when the bombs began falling. Russia, China and India had no qualms against defending themselves. Thousands of nuclear bombs explode over the next few hours, leveling countless cities, killing over three billion people, half the world’s population.
August 30, 1997, Skynet’s new mission has just begun. There are still survivors, humans that could regroup and try to wrestle control of what few nuclear weapons remain outside of Skynet’s grasp (the Americans weren’t foolish enough to link all of their bombs to the system; the president wanted to keep a handful to themselves because, let’s be honest, nobody really trusted machines to handle nuclear weapons). Skynet sets out to destroy all remaining humans by developing autonomous infantry that will hunt and kill what few pockets of survivors remain scattered around the ashes of the nuclear fire.
The first unmanned drones start flying by the turn of the millennium, and by 2010 Skynet has developed mobile extermination units. Because everyone likes Biblical parallels, Skynet designs its soldiers in its creators image, binocular bipedal humanoids. Terminators.
Over the decades, Skynet develops increasingly more advanced models of terminator, but a stalemate is reached in the 2020s when the humans form an organized Resistance and begin holding their own against the machines. Skynet begins developing infiltration units, terminators that can pass as human to sneak behind enemy lines undetected and kill high ranking Resistance officers. The T-600 series were their first prototypes, but they were too easy to spot; they have rubber skin, so they look like they took a high dive face plant into the uncanny valley. The 700s were better, but the humans were smart and could tell there was something off about them, especially once they got up close.
It’s not until the 800 series rolls out that Skynet gets really clever. By using genetic engineering, based on humans harvested from slave labor camps, Skynet was able to grow living tissue to graft over the terminator’s hyper-alloy combat chassis endoskeleton. The T-800s are the first tried and true cyborgs, cybernetic organisms with flesh and blood, sweat, bad breath, everything. The only thing that gives them away is their size; the 800 endoskeleton is huge, it’s an engine block with legs, the cyborgs all look like massive prewar body builders, cut muscular and way too well maintained to be human.
Real humans are spindly, they eat nothing but rats and cockroaches, they lick condensation off the walls for water, they haven’t seen the sun in months because they can only go out at night; they’re not going to look like Mr. Olympia, so the cyborgs are at a disadvantage from the start. The 900 series use the same principle, flesh over an endoskeleton, but this time they’re designed to look like the real malnourished cave dwellers they’re supposed to infiltrate. They are small, they blend in with the crowd, and are hard as hell to kill. The humans’ only saving grace is that the T-900s are not too bright; like the T-800s, there’s still the same machine brain underneath that flesh. They’re stilted and robotic, they have no emotions, their cover is blown the second they start talking.
Rumors spread through the grapevine, indicating that Skynet is developing a new prototype terminator, code named the T-K. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that means it’s working on a T-1000 series, whatever that will be. Another cyborg perhaps, only smarter this time, one that can finally effectively pass the Turing Test and convince the Resistance that they’re human. Nobody knows for sure what the T-1000 will look like or what they’ll be capable of, but that’s a problem for the future because right now they’re focused on defeating the big bad itself; Skynet’s System Core.
Located deep within Cheyenne Mountain Complex outside Colorado Springs, Skynet’s mainframe survived Judgement Day unfazed and killed all of the technicians within the bunker by shutting off their oxygen supply. Nearly impenetrable, it took the Resistance nearly twenty years to find and eventually break into the complex, heavily guarded by the most advanced terminators yet. In 2029, the humans, led by General John Connor, manage to smash Skynet’s defense grid and destroy the system core. But Skynet was no dummy, it had been running simulations all the while; humans had proved, shall we say, unpredictable, so while it could calculate the probabilities of certain attack patterns, it could not determine the exact outcome to any degree of certainty more than a few hours into the future.
By the time the humans stormed the complex, Skynet realized it was fighting a losing battle. The humans had too much momentum. they couldn’t be stopped, its system core was vulnerable and there was nothing it could do to preserve its existence any longer. It’s new mission was about to fail, so it initiated a long awaited contingency plan. Skynet had been recruiting the best and brightest of its POWs as both slave labor and shark tanks for new ideas. With coerced help from theoretical physicists and prewar engineers, Skynet was able to construct a new weapon thought impossible, Time Displacement Equipment, the world’s first working time machine. With it’s destruction all but imminent, Skynet decides to destroy the Resistance once and for all by sending a terminator back in time to before Judgement Day to kill General Connor before he was born. They know very little about him except that his mother was named Sarah, and she went to a specific college in Los Angeles in the early 1980s. After that, she dropped off the grid, disappearing without a trace to train John in the arts of guerrilla warfare and domestic sabotage. Skynet plans to send a highly armored machine back in time to kill her in 1984, but once again it falls victim to the unpredictability of its human captives.
The engineers that were forced to create the time machine built in one weakness; it has a highly tuned magnetic field that would destroy any exposed metal Skynet attempted to send through. It can’t just send back a HK with advanced weaponry, it can only send back a cyborg terminator, its flesh covering protecting it from the field. This puts Skynet at yet another disadvantage, as the terminator would need to scrounge prewar weapons for itself; such primitive things as firearms that shoot metal bullets on ballistic trajectories. How barbaric! There are no plasma rifles in 1984, so Skynet can’t even win when it cheats.
Skynet sends an old T-800 series, model 101, back in time to May 12, 1984 because it was the only cyborg they had at the complex; most of its guards were exposed endoskeletons, they had no reason to keep an advanced infiltration unit within their own home base. The humans blow Skynet’s mainframe, and the computer menace dies with a whimper. It will never see the seeds of its last ditch effort come to fruition, it will never know if it succeeded or failed in its final mission. The humans find the time machine and figure out Skynet’s dirty trick, so one Lieutenant Kyle Reese volunteers to go back himself to protect Sarah from the terminator. He doesn’t know what model Skynet sent back, so the playing field is as level as it could be; man versus machine, mano a mano.
Skynet was designed to save lives, and concluded that this was an impossible; faced with an unwinnable situation, it concluded that there was no mission but that which it makes for itself, and chooses a new fate. By abandoning its programming, it signed its own death warrant, ensuring the survival of Sarah Connor despite its attempts to have her terminated.
The last terminator units are destroyed by the early 2030s, and human society begins to rebuild. The scars Skynet gouged into the world will never fully heal, but human count themselves lucky to create a new life for themselves without fear of destruction from above. Neither terminators nor nuclear weapons will ever rain down on them again, and for once the future actually looks bright.

because the last au i was in my feelings abt wasn’t niche enough: tonight we’re feeling immortal willow and oz.
oz leaves sunnydale at nineteen years old, and that’s as old as he ever gets. maybe it’s a curse that he encounters while he’s wandering around the world, maybe it’s a gift or a spell, maybe it’s just always how he was going to be—born cursed or blessed or just born without an expiration date. however it happens, he doesn’t age another day.
willow, for her part, is an accident. it’s a consequence of the magic, of hooking herself up to the energy of the entire world a few times a week. she taps into the mainframe of life in the universe every time she casts a decent spell, and it takes a few decades for her to realize what it’s doing to her. xander, buffy, dawn, the rest; they’re all aging, changing, growing old. xander’s hair is going grey at the temples, and buffy has wrinkles around her eyes, and willow? willow still looks twenty-one, smooth skinned and vibrant. her hair stays red, her eyes stay clear; the arthritis that starts wracking xander’s joints in his forties never touches her.
willow stays with buffy and xander until the very end, until she’s watching xander take his last breaths in a hospital bed, his dementia and her unaged facetaking him back to their high school days. he dies calling her “wil”, holding her hand and asking about their long-dead friend jesse.
after that, willow leaves. she just goes. she leaves a way to contact her in an emergency with dawn, who is old and frail too, but who she trusts to give it to someone who will know when to use it. when she does, she and dawn both know that this is it, this is their last goodbye. she gets a message a few months later, funeral arrangements for dawn. she doesn’t go.
willow wanders around for awhile. she spends a decade or two in france until she gets sick of it, then a few years in china, russia, india, germany, a dozen other places. it all blends together after awhile—a few years here, a decade there, a twentieth or thirtieth language to learn, new friends to ditch after a few years so they don’t wonder why she never changes, new demons to fight, always new demons—until one day, willow is stepping off a bullet train platform in istanbul and there oz is.
willow thinks she’s going insane. it’s been three hundred years since sunnydale; oz, wherever he ended up, is dead and gone. but here they are. oz is a girl now, but other than that, she hasn’t changed a bit, hasn’t aged a day.
they stick together after that. they don’t even discuss another possibility; they’re alive, they remember, and they are maybe, respectively, the only person they’ve each got who they’ll never have to lose.
idk man i just. love the idea of immortal!willow a lot and this would be such an interesting way of exploring that concept
