It's just a matter of time until one of them starts talking. Their heads are full and Matt's mouth is loose. Some silence is very much appreciated sometimes.

Additional information:

A recent incident (a Taiwanese actress, Barbie Hsu, passed away in Japan while traveling there) reminded me that in Japan, if someone stays in the country temporarily and passes away, they would almost certainly be cremated in the country.

Cremation is the standard practice in Japan and is nearly mandatory, even for foreigners.

Therefore, L, Mello, and Matt, passed away in Japan, their bodies would be cremated, and only their ashes would be taken back to England (or wherever they were meant to be buried).

So......it would be like:

For L, he would be buried in Japan since the Task Force buried him without knowing any personal information of his. They would likely bury his ashes in a public graveyard. If Wammy’s House sent someone to retrieve his ashes, they would have to unearth it (dig him up!)

As for Mello and Matt, I imagine Near would send someone to retrieve their bodies, have them cremated, and take their ashes back to England. (I silently wish someone could write a fanfic oneshot of this, so angsty so much emotions)

fifteen years ago Matt and Mello were killed.

if you go to wammy's residential cemetery, you will see a small headstone that marks where their ashes are buried. it was decided that Matt would be cremated. Mello didn't really have a choice.

like the other three graves, there's nothing notable about the memorial to the two of them. it is newer, but as the years have gone by, nature has reclaimed the stone, ivy crawling up the surface like a blossoming green crack against the greying facade.

Near found it difficult to visit for the first few years, unable to leave his room during the funeral service. he kept putting off his visits, primarily justifying it as being too busy to return to the House. but he knew it was that particular grave he had been neglecting, and so he finally decided to go pay his respects.

the first occasion he stood and stared at it, noting how small it is. it does not feel like an appropriate tribute in that regard. Roger had made it clear that it was nothing personal — L's grave is even more inconspicuous, a small plaque that had long since been buried amongst the tall grass — but Near had never met L, and he had known Matt and Mello all too well.

the next time, he brought offerings. he sat down beside the grave and lay a bar of chocolate and a packet of cigarettes on top of the headstone. he knew that neither would last very long, what with the tendency of the wammy's children to steal and hoard the very few items they found for themselves. Near certainly didn't think Matt would mind if he contributed to a child's imminent nicotine addiction, but he imagined Mello would be slightly bothered to think of anyone enjoying chocolate on his behalf.

he sat down and talked to them. it was ridiculous, he knew, but he detailed the case he was working on, explained his strategy for dealing with the evidence he had gathered, and how he intended to capture the suspect. he could hear their responses as he spoke, hardly encouraging, but rather familiar nonetheless. he wondered if they were proud of him, but let go of such musings as soon as he was aware of them. it didn't matter. not really.

today is the last time Near will visit their grave. it is raining heavily in winchester and Halle insisted on joining him with an umbrella, which she holds over his head as he settles down into a seated position. his pyjamas will be dirty, but he doesn't care about that right now.

Near explains that he is stepping down from being L, that he has chosen his next successor and that they will be taking over the position effective immediately. he has not yet told this to Roger, but will do so in a few hours. he is the first resident at the House to live long enough to retire, and he doesn't know what that will mean for his ability to visit the orphanage. he just knows that he will be leaving, while Mello and Matt will forever remain on the grounds of their childhood home. they had both dreamt of a future far greater than themselves, a life that the world they grew up in would never allow. they were forever nineteen and twenty, and Near does feel guilty about that. he always had done.

Halle asks if he is ready to speak to Roger, and Near nods, standing up. he reaches out and touches the grave, the stone wet and rough against his fingers. he says goodbye.

Losing my mind every time I rewatch Matt's death scene because yeah they shot him 13 times and he died. But we also see 27 bullets that missed, the car gets shot at least 9 times (and probably more) and we see 5 or 6 bullets fly right past him and not land with the rest.

Takada's guards have the nerve to look SO proud after a 76% miss rate (at best) on a mf who was standing still. I'd quit tbh 😭

Finally finished the semester and something overtook me and I was not able to stop until this was done . Fun fact historically when I was younger I’d aaaalways draw these two for new years. That lasted about 3 years and then I stopped LOL but it’s my 10 year death note anniversary so I figured this would be fun

this has probably been talked about before but damnit i want to see more of the death note characters struggle.

i want to see light flinching at fireworks and his father's touch after the faked execution. i want to see him habitually turning to an empty chair, picking up a tennis racket, absentmindedly making tooth-rotting coffee before he realises L isn't there anymore.

i want to see misa installing multiple locks on her door after her parents' murders, making multiple trips at night just to check the doors are locked. after she gets married to light, i want her to complain to the empty air, to say a hasty goodnight before realising that no-one is there to listen any longer.

i want to see kid L staying up late alone, face lit by a computer screen. i want to see him before his death: i want to see his last moments with the man who raised him, his last night with the only one who understood him, him knowing that death's finally starting to catch up.

i want to see near trying to live up to the title of L. i want to see him staying up more at night, dropping sugar cubes in his tea even though he knows it's stupid.

i want to see mello digging his nails into his skin, chugging energy drinks, just to stay up and study for a little while longer. i want to see him doing anything to win and regretting it later on when he's alone. i want to see him keeping matt's goggles in his pocket after his death.

i want to see matt blaming himself after he sees mello spiral, maybe even blaming L and purposely scoring lower on his tests so he won't become the next L. i want to see matt choosing to follow mello out of the orphanage anyway and them having a big argument about it because mello didn't want matt to have to sacrifice everything he'd known for him.

i want to see kid sayu trying her best to live up to her brother's image, trying to be 'the smart one' because that's what light was and so she figures that's what she has to be, too.

i want to see sachiko, after her son's and husband's death, make a portion large enough for four, set a table for four and leave the door open every day at nine until she realises no-one is going to come home.

okay so i know that death note is an action-centered anime and having things like these would slow down the plot and maybe bore the readers. but i also think that all these show their humanity and also is part of the problem that light and L both show the readers: sometimes you get so caught up in the game, in the thrill of it all, that you forget the pawns you're playing with are not plastic pieces but real, living human beings.
