“Magical girl shows started with Sailor Moon” no it didn’t

Princess Knight (1953), a manga by the famous Osamu Tezuka, the man also responsible for series such as Mighty Atom/Astro Boy, Jungle Emperor/Kimba the White Lion and Dororo, and generally regarded as the ‘father’ of modern anime and manga. Although its status as a ‘magical girl’ series is debated, it’s one of the first plot-oriented shojo manga and thus deserves a mention due to the domino effect it caused - it also has heavy influence from the all-girl Takazura Revue theatre troupe, which several subsequent shojo manga share (including Sailor Moon itself and one of its core influences in Lady Oscar: The Rose of Versailles)

Himitsu no Akko-Chan (1962) and Sally the Witch (1966) (originally serialized as Sunny the Witch), the first manga and anime unambiguously considered part of the ‘magical girl’ genre respectively - the latter is explicitly influenced by the American TV series Bewitched (1964), which would therefore make that show the first magical girl TV series period.

Marvelous Melmo (1970) (originally serialized as Mamaa-chan), another series by Tezuka, this time unambiguously in the now-extant magical girl genre. This is the first series to have the now-staple ‘transformation sequence’ thanks to Melmo’s divine age-altering pills.

Cutie Honey (1973), the first magical girl series with tokusatsu influences (specifically The Seven Disguises of Kotohime) and a focus on action - it has also explicitly been stated as an influence on Naoko Takeuchi’s work, and even gets paid homage to in a chapter of Codename: Sailor V!

Hana no Ko Lunlun (1979), arguably the first Japanese magical girl show to get an official English-language release of any kind in the form of ‘Angel’ (if you don’t count the previously mentioned Princess Knight as part of the genre) - only a few episodes were ever dubbed, but the show was released in both the US and Canada!

Kiki’s Delivery Service (1985), the first magical girl series I’ve found to be written by a woman, Eiko Kadono (and yes it’s a series, there are 9 children’s novels in Japanese)

I began reading the manga version of Sally the Witch and I can't help but wonder if Toei decided to take inspiration from it began to write the beginning of Chappy.
Both have humans noticing the mysterious new house that suddenly appeared seemingly overnight as well as someone breaking into the house only to regret it thanks to the inhabitants in question being witches.
It wouldn't be out of pocket considering that Chappy was intentionally made to be as much like Sally as possible.

this week, I stumbled upon a YT: the opening theme of a beloved childhood show… I had completely forgotten about it, and rediscovering it felt like uncovering a hidden treasure✨💖 As it turns out, Sally the Witch was not only the first mahō shōjo anime series, but also one of the first ongoing anime productions.
the show's basic storyline has been influential in many later magical girl anime shows and manga, particularly the concept of a magical princess relocating to the human world… ✨It's wonderful to revisit a childhood favorite and appreciate its significance in the history of anime💖
my inner child is over the moon🌙💕
