The Congress has completed a review of its preparation for the Maharashtra assembly elections in 172 seats and will finish the process for all the 288 seats by September 25, AICC General Secretary Ramesh Chennithala said here on Friday.

He exuded confidence that there is “an atmosphere of change in the state” which is favourable for the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance of Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (SP)-Shiv Sena (UBT) this time.

In a blow to former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, his brother-in-law and BJP leader Bhaskarrao Patil Khatgaonkar joined the Congress on Friday ahead of the Maharashtra elections. Recently, the Congress MP from Nanded, Vasant Chavan, passed away, leaving the Lok Sabha seat vacant. Apart from former Nanded MP Khatgaonkar, his daughter-in-law Dr Meena Khatgaonkar, and former MLA Omprakash Pokarna also jumped the ship to join the Congress. Khatgaonkar had formed a co-operative, Godavari Manar Sahkari Karkhana, in Nanded through which many farmers in the constituency got employment, and it made Khatgaonkar popular among the masses. Recently, Ashok Chavan had indirectly threatened Khatgaonkar not to leave the BJP, saying “those who stay with us will be safe”. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Nana Patole, in an apparent dig at Chavan, said “Khatgaonkar joining the Congress has strengthened the party in Nanded. He has not joined for an election ticket. Those threatening Khatgaonkar should check first if they are safe”. Khatgaonkar is the brother-in-law of former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, who joined the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2024. Meena Khatgaonkar is likely to contest Nanded’s Naigaon Assembly seat. “I believe in Mohabbat ki dukaan slogan of Rahul Gandhi, hence I have joined the Congress. Ashok Chavan is my relative, so I will not say much about him. Looking forward to working for the Congress in the upcoming elections”, she said after joining the grand old party. Notably, Bhaskarrao Patil Khatgaonkar had joined the Congress from the BJP in 2021. In 2024, he rejoined the BJP along with Ashok Chavan. India to buy soybeans to help farmers reeling from losses NEW DELHI, Sept 11 (Reuters) - India will buy soybeans from farmers of the central state of Madhya Pradesh at state-set support prices to help growers reeling from a crash in domestic rates for the oilseed, a government statement said on Wednesday. India uses soybeans to manufacture soyoil, which helps the country cut its hefty edible oil imports, while the by-product soymeal is used for animal feed and exported mainly to Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Farmers plant soybeans during the monsoon season in June and July and harvest the main summer oilseed crop from October. Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan accepted a request from Madhya Pradesh to buy soybeans at the government-mandated support price, the statement said. Prices of soybeans have dropped well below the government-set support price of 4,892 rupees ($58.27) per 100 kg, angering farmers. Earlier, the government agreed to buy soybeans from growers of the western state of Maharashtra. Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh together account for nearly 70% of India's total soybean output. The government would also buy soybeans in the southern state of Karnataka. Millions of farmers are seen as an influential voting bloc in India, the world's leading producer of an array of crops such as rice, wheat, cane and cotton. A spate of export curbs imposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has already fuelled anger among farmers. After Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party suffered losses in rural constituencies in this year's general election, the government is keen to placate farmers ahead of state assembly elections in states such as Haryana and Maharashtra, political commentators say. Hailing from a prominent political family, her brother Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of independent India, her niece Indira Gandhi the first female Prime Minister of India and her grand-nephew Rajiv Gandhi was the sixth Prime Minister of India. Pandit was sent to London as India's most important diplomat after serving as Nehru's envoy to the Soviet Union, the United States and the United Nations. Her time in London offers insights into the wider context of changes in Indo–British relations. Her High-Commissionership was a microcosm of inter-governmental relations.
