या देवी सर्वभू‍तेषु माँ महागौरी रूपेण संस्थिता ।

नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नम: ॥

सोलह साल की उम्र में देवी शैलपुत्री अत्यंत सुंदर थीं। अपने अत्यधिक गौर रंग के कारण देवी महागौरी की तुलना शंख, चंद्रमा और कुंद के सफेद फूल से की जाती है। अपने इन गौर आभा के कारण उन्हें देवी महागौरी के नाम से जाना जाता है। माँ महागौरी केवल सफेद वस्त्र धारण करतीं है उसी के कारण उन्हें श्वेताम्बरधरा के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।

तिथि: आश्विन शुक्ल अष्टमी

सवारी: वृष

अत्र-शस्त्र: चार हाथ - त्रिशूल, अभय मुद्रा, डमरू, वरदा मुद्रा।

"దేవీ మహాగౌరీ" ధ్యాన శ్లోకం

శ్లో𝕝𝕝 శ్వేతే వృషే సమారూఢా శ్వేతాంబరధరా శుచిః | మహాగౌరీ శుభం దద్యాన్మహాదేవప్రమోదదా ||

అష్టవర్షా భవేద్గౌరీ - "మహాగౌరి" అష్టవర్ష ప్రాయము గలది. ఈమె గౌర వర్ణ శోభలు మల్లెపూవులను, శంఖమును, చంద్రుని తలపింపజేయును. ఈమె ధరించు వస్త్రములును, ఆభరణములును ధవళ కాంతులను వెదజల్లుచుండును. ఈమె చతుర్భుజ, వృషభవాహన. తన కుడిచేతులలో ఒకదానియందు అభయముద్రను, మఱియొకదానియందు త్రిశూలమును వహించియుండును. అట్లే ఎడమచేతులలో ఒకదానియందు డమరుకమును, వేఱొకదానియందు వరముద్రను కలిగియుండును. ఈమె దర్శనము ప్రశాంతము.

పార్వతి యవతారమున పరమశివుని పతిగా పొందుటకు కఠోరమైన తపస్సు చేయగా ఈమె శరీరము పూర్తిగా నలుపెక్కెను. ప్రసన్నుడైన శివుడు గంగాజలముతో అభిషేకించగా ఈమె శ్వేత వర్ణశోభితయై విద్యుత్కాంతులను విరజిమ్ముచు "మహాగౌరి" యని వాసిగాంచెను. ఈమె శక్తి అమోఘము. సద్యఃఫలదాయకము. ఈమెను ఉపాసించిన భక్తుల కల్మషములన్నియును ప్రక్షాళితమగును. వారి పూర్వ సంచిత పాపములును పూర్తిగా నశించును. భవిష్యత్తులో గూడ పాపతాపములుగాని, దైన్య దుఃఖములుగాని వారిని దరిజేరవు. వారు సర్వవిధముల పునీతులై, ఆక్షయముగా పుణ్యఫలములను పొందుదురు. ఈ దేవి పాదారవిందములను సేవించుటవలన కష్టములు మటుమాయమగును. ఈమె యుపాసన ప్రభావమున అసంభవములైన కార్యముల సైతము సంభవములే యగును.

The word Mahagauri translates to 'extremely fair' symbolising the goddess' radiant and fair appearance. The legend goes that Goddess Parvati underwent intense penance to win Lord Shiva's affection. Pleased with her devotion, Lord Shiva accepted her as his consort, and subsequently married her. However, due to her prolonged sadhana, her body colour turned dark. Parvati decided to perform severe penance to Brahma to get back her complexion.

Brahma asked Parvati to slay demons Shumbha and Nishumbha and asked her to take a bath in the Ganga river in Himalaya. After taking the bath, Parvati emerges from the river with a golden complexion, wearing white garments and came to be called Mahagauri.

Due to her fair complexion Goddess Mahagauri is compared with the conch, the moon and the white flower of Kunda. She adorns white clothes only and due to that She is also known as Shwetambardhara.
