What is the difference between Mahamaya, Yogmaya, and Maya?
Maya is a general term, which is also known as Vishnu Maya, as it is cast by Lord Vishnu alone. It has two features: Yogamaya and Mahamaya.
Vedic scriptures, depending on the context, may employ the term Maya interchangeably, either referring to Mahamaya or Yogamaya. Most of the time, Maya simply refers to Mahamaya, unless the context implies otherwise.
The principal potency is Yogamaya. This refers to the internal or superior potency of the Lord, which is also known as Svarupa Shakti of the Lord. The expansion of this internal potency is Mahamaya, which refers to the external or inferior potency of the Lord. The difference between the two has been clearly explained in Śrī Nārada Pañcarātra, in the conversation between Sruti and Vidya. It is as follows
jānāty ekā parā-kāntaṁ saiva durgā tad-ātmikā | yā parā paramā śaktir mahā-viṣṇu-svarūpiṇī ||
yasyā vijñāna-mātreṇa parāṇāṁ paramātmanaḥ | muhūrtād eva devasya prāptir bhavati nānyathā ||
ekeyaṁ prema-sarvasva-svabhāvā śrī-kuleśvarī | anayā sulabho jñeya ādi devokhileśvaraḥ ||
asyā āvarikā śaktir mahā-māyākhileśvarī | yayā mugdhaṁ jagat sarvaṁ sarva-dehābhimānataḥ ||
Yoga-māyā is the svarupa sakti of Lord Visnu. She is completely surrendered and unswerving in devotion to the Lord. Her nature is prema and she rules over Gokula like a queen. One immediately attains the Lord by her mercy.
Her āvaraṇikā-śakti is mahamaya, the controller of the material realm. Through her influence, all jivas identify with their bodies and become bewildered. Maha-māyā is also called Durga, Eka or Ekanamsa.
-Śrī Nārada Pañcarātra, quoted in Sarartha Darshini commentary to Srimad Bhagavatam 10.1.25
In this regard, Srila Prabhupada explains
Yogamaya means the mercy of the Supreme Lord which connects a devotee in the transcendental loving service of the Lord (in dāsya-rasa, sakhya-rasa, vātsalya-rasa, or mādhurya-rasa)
Mahamaya means the external potency of the Lord which puts a conditioned soul into the illusion that he will be happy by material adjustment.
-Letter to Aniruddha, Nov. 14, 1968
The Lord’s potency, viṣṇu-māyā, has two features: āvaraṇikā (covering potency that influences non-devotees) and unmukha (potency that influences pure devotees).
When the Lord appeared, His potency came with Him and acted in different ways. She acted as Yoga-māyā with Yaśodā, Devakī and other intimate relations of the Lord, and she acted in a different way (as a Maha-māyā) with Kaṁsa, Śālva and other asuras.
-Purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 10.2.6
Although the original potency or the energy of the Lord is undividedly one, based on their multifarious functions, they are classified differently. This has been beautifully explained by Srila Prabhupada as follows
Parāsya śaktir vividhaiva śrūyate (Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad 6.8). In the Vedas, it is said that the potencies of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are called by different names, such as yoga-māyā and mahā-māyā. Ultimately, however, the Lord’s potency is one, exactly as electric potency is one although it can act both to cool and to heat.
The Lord’s potency acts in both the spiritual and material worlds. In the spiritual world, the Lord’s potency works as yoga-māyā, and in the material world, the same potency works as mahā-māyā, exactly as electricity works in both a heater and a cooler.
In the material world, this potency, working as mahā-māyā, acts upon the conditioned souls to deprive them more and more of devotional service. It is said, yayā sammohito jīva ātmānaṁ tri-guṇātmakam. In the material world, the conditioned soul thinks of himself as a product of tri-guṇa, the three modes of material nature. This is the bodily conception of life.
Because of associating with the three guṇas of material potency, everyone identifies himself with his body. Someone is thinking he is a brāhmaṇa, someone a kṣatriya, and someone a vaiśya or śūdra. Actually, however, one is neither a brāhmaṇa, a kṣatriya, a vaiśya nor a śūdra; one is part and parcel of the Supreme Lord (mamaivāṁśaḥ), but because of being covered by the material energy, mahā-māyā, one identifies himself in these different ways.
When the conditioned soul becomes liberated, however, he thinks himself an eternal servant of Kṛṣṇa. Jīvera ‘svarūpa’ haya-kṛṣṇera ‘nitya-dāsa.’ When he comes to that position, the same potency, acting as yoga-māyā, increasingly helps him become purified and devote his energy to the service of the Lord.
-Purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 10.1.25
Example of Yoga-māyā
Let us see a couple of examples of Yoga-māyā employed in relation to protecting the devotees, helping devotees relish the taste of Bhakti Rasa through transcendental bewilderment, and revealing and concealing the transcendental form of the Lord. This Yoga-māyā has also been known as ātma-māyā or daivī prakṛti in Bhagavad Gita. It is basically an expression of Krishna’s knowledge potency (chit shakti). Few examples are as follows
bhagavān api viśvātmā viditvā kaṁsajaṁ bhayam yadūnāṁ nija-nāthānāṁ yoga-māyāṁ samādiśat
To protect the Yadus, His personal devotees, from Kaṁsa’s attack, the Personality of Godhead, Viśvātmā, the Supreme Soul of everyone, ordered Yoga-māyā.- Srimad Bhagavatam 10.2.6
bhagavān api tā rātṛīḥ śāradotphulla-mallikāḥ vīkṣya rantuṁ manaś cakre yoga-māyām upāśritaḥ
Śrī Bādarāyaṇi said: Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, full in all opulences, yet upon seeing those autumn nights scented with blossoming jasmine flowers, He turned His mind toward loving affairs (with the gopīs). To fulfil His purposes, He took shelter of His Yoga-māyā potency - Srimad Bhagavatam 10.29.1
ajo ’pi sann avyayātmā bhūtānām īśvaro ’pi san prakṛtiṁ svām adhiṣṭhāya sambhavāmy ātma-māyayā
Although My form is unborn and indestructible, and although I am the Lord of all living entities, still, I appear through My yoga-māya potency in My original form of eternality, cognizance and bliss.- Bhagavad Gita 4.6
mahātmānas tu māṁ pārtha daivīṁ prakṛtim āśritāḥ bhajanty ananya-manaso jñātvā bhūtādim avyayam
O son of Pṛthā, those who are not deluded, the great souls, are under the protection of the divine nature (yoga-māya or internal superior potency). They are fully engaged in devotional service because they know Me as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, original and inexhaustible.- Bhagavad Gita 9.13
nāhaṁ prakāśaḥ sarvasya yoga-māyā-samāvṛtaḥ mūḍho ’yaṁ nābhijānāti loko mām ajam avyayam
I am never manifest to the foolish and unintelligent. For them, I am covered by My yoga-māyā (internal potency), and therefore they do not know that I am unborn and infallible.- Bhagavad Gita 7.25
Yogamaya came to the prison when Kṛṣṇa was born, transferred the seventh child from Devaki’s womb, and put Yasoda into a deep sleep to exchange the two children. These are activities of yogamaya, not mahamaya. Mahamaya does not have the power to transfer her master Balarama to another womb.
Yasoda’s sleep is not the work of mahamaya because the scriptures say that beyond the fourth state of consciousness is the fifth state of prema. The dreaming of Kṛṣṇa’s eternal associates occurs in the state of prema. Their sleep and dreaming are not caused by the modes of nature (gunas). Mahamaya cannot exert any influence over the eternal associates of the Lord.
-Sarartha Darshini commentary to Srimad Bhagavatam 10.1.25
Example of Maha-māyā
The form of Devaki’s daughter that Kamsa tried to kill was Mahamaya, not Yogamaya. Yogamaya does not involve herself with such sinful people.
Mahamaya slipped from Kamsa’s hands, rose up in the sky, and then settled in many places with different names (such as Durgā, Bhadrakālī, Vijayā, Vaiṣṇavī, Kumudā, Caṇḍikā, Kṛṣṇā, Mādhavī, Kanyakā, Māyā, Nārāyaṇī, Īśānī, Śāradā and Ambikā)
The bewilderment of the demons is the action of Mahamaya, and the bewilderment of the devotees is the action of Yogamaya.
-Sarartha Darshini commentary to Srimad Bhagavatam 10.1.25
vilajjamānayā yasya sthātum īkṣā-pathe ’muyā vimohitā vikatthante mamāham iti durdhiyaḥ
The external illusory energy (Maha-māyā) of Kṛṣṇa, known as māyā, is always ashamed to stand in front of Kṛṣṇa, just as darkness is ashamed to remain before the sunshine. However, that māyā bewilders unfortunate people who have no intelligence. Thus they simply boast that this material world is theirs and that they are its enjoyers.- Srimad Bhagavatam 2.5.13
daivī hy eṣā guṇa-mayī mama māyā duratyayā mām eva ye prapadyante māyām etāṁ taranti te
This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it.- Bhagavad Gita 7.14
Mahamaya, which controls three gunas, has no jurisdiction over the intimate devotees of Lord Krishna, for the devotees are nirguna (beyond the modes). Those bewildered by mahamaya are all opposed to the Lord. Whereas transcendental bewilderment of the gopis, mother Yashoda, etc are the actions of yoga-Maya, which oversees actions on the nirguna platform.
Those who take shelter of mahamaya cannot cross the samsara, for the job of mahamaya is to present unreal things as real. Only by taking the shelter of yogamaya, one can cross the samsara. Whatever is arranged by yogamaya is all real. This fact has been explained by Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita 7.14 (mama māyā duratyayā- Maha-maya binds us in samsara) and Bhagavad Gita 9.13 (mahātmānas tu māṁ pārtha daivīṁ prakṛtim āśritāḥ- Yoga-maya liberates us from samsara)
Finally, before concluding my answer, let me quote the following statement of Srila Prabhupada
Both yogamaya and mahamaya are equally important to Krishna as much as any government department is equally important for functioning of the government. The police department may be horrible for the criminals, but to the government it is a department as good as university department. Similarly, mahamaya is horrible to the conditioned soul, but to the liberated soul, there is no fear of mahamaya, because he is protected by yogamaya.

This material world (1/4 of the Spiritual Sky) is made up of unlimited massive Brahmanda material universes, all coming from Maha-Visnu’s Bodily Form, from His breathing and the pores of His skin. Srila Prabhupada says, “in the early morning hours (known as brahma-muhurta) one should get up” The brahma-muhurta is generally accepted as the most auspicious time of the day to perform spiritual practices. During this time of day the world is peaceful and the influence of the modes of passion and ignorance are less thus enabling us to focus more on our spiritual practices. The brahma-muhurta begins approximately one and a half hours before sunrise. Although this may be difficult for some devotees, due to pressures of work etc., rising early and regulation are beneficial for the development of spiritual life. If you cannot rise this early it is still good to rise as early as possible and at the same time everyday. In the Bhagavad-gita Lord Krsna says, yuktāhāra-vihārasya yukta-ceṣṭasya karmasu yukta-svapnāvabodhasya yogo bhavati duḥkha-hā He who is regulated in his habits of eating, sleeping, recreation and work can mitigate all material pains by practicing the yoga system.BG 6.17 Leading a regulated life helps us to overcome the influence of the modes of material nature and thus be situated in a position more conducive to developing transcendental consciousness. Concerning pratah-smrti, remembrance of the Lord in the morning, in the early morning hours (known as brahma-muhurta) one should get up and immediately chant the Hare Krsna mantra, or at least ‘Krsna, Krsna, Krsna’. In this way, one should remember Krsna. Some slokas or prayers should also be chanted. By chanting, one immediately becomes auspicious and transcendental to the infection of material qualities. Actually one has to chant and remember Lord Krsna twenty-four hours daily, or as much as possible When you wake up in the morning, you should chant the name of the Lord. This helps to clear the consciousness of the influences of sleep or any bad dreams you may have experienced during the night. You can chant the names of the deities you are worshiping or the Hare Krsna maha-mantra. In the purport to Caitanya-caritamrta, Madhya 24.331 Srila Prabhupada says, smartavyah satatam visnur vismartavyo na jatucit sarve vidhi-nisedhah syur etayor eva kinkarah Krsna is the origin of Lord Visnu. He should always be remembered and never forgotten at any time. All the rules and prohibitions mentioned in the sastras should be the servants of these two principles. [Padma Purana, from the portion called Brhat-sahasra-nama-stotra.]

Powerful Narasimha Mantras – Meaning – For Protection
Narasimha who is one of the most powerful avatars of Lord Vishnu, (the protector in the Hindu Triad) is known to be fierce to fight and remove all that is evil and as a result protect all his devotees from every negative aspect of life. He is regarded as the embodiment of victory of good over evil.
Vishnu assumed this fierce form on top of Himvat mountain (Harivamsa). He is believed to have taken the avatar to destroy the demon king Hiranyakashipu.
Lord Narasimha is said to have half human and half lion appearance where the torso and the lower body is that of human while the face and claws are that of a ferocious lion. In conjunction with the bodily appearances, Lord Narasimha is described in various forms and is said to have about more than 74 forms with respect to different postures and weapons that he holds in his hands. The 9 main ones are collectively known as Nava-narasiṁha and as follows :
Ugra-narasiṁha
Kroddha-narasiṁha
Vīra-narasiṁha
Vilamba-narasiṁha
Kopa-narasiṁha
Yoga-narasiṁha
Aghora-narasiṁha
Sudarśana-narasiṁha
Lakṣmī-narasiṁha
Out of these forms, the Lakṣmī-narasiṁha is the form where Goddess Lakshmi is sitting on His lap and the Lord is calmer than the other forms.
Due to the nature of Narasiṁha’s form (divine anger), it is essential that worship be given with a very high level of attention compared to other deities.
Narasimha Mantra
In many temples only lifelong celibates (Brahmācārya) are able to have the chance to serve as priests to perform the daily puja. Forms where Narasiṁha appears sitting in a yogic posture, or with the Goddess Lakṣmī are the exception to this rule, as Narasiṁha is taken as being more relaxed.
The form and outlook of Lord Narasimha teach us that evil does not triumph over good. Those who support malevolence would be annihilated by God as He is everywhere. A number of Mantras in Sanskrit herald, praise and pray to Lord Narasimha and chanting any chosen Narasimha Mantra with due reverence, diligence and devotion can remove fears and bestow all good on the devotees. A collection of simple, but profound Narasimha Mantras that can confer multifarious benefits are as given below.
Narasimha Mantra
Narasimha Maha Mantra
“Om hrim ksaumugram viram mahavivnumjvalantam sarvatomukham।
Nrsimham bhisanam bhadrammrtyormrtyum namamyaham ॥”
Meaning: ‘Oh Angry and brave Maha-Visnu, your heat and fire permeate everywhere. O Lord Narasimha, you are everywhere. You are the death of death and I surrender to You.’
Benefit: Reciting this Mantra with utmost devotion results in the gain of the armour of Narasimha which protects everything that is blessed and destroys all problems of the chanter.
Narasimha Pranama Prayer
“Namaste narasimhaya, prahladahlada-dayine, hiranyakasipor vaksah, sila-tanka nakhalaye |“
Ito nrsimhah parato nrsimho, yato yato yami tato nrsimhah, bahir nrsimho hrdaye nrsimho, nrsimham adim saranam prapadye ||”
Meaning: ‘I offer my obeisances to Lord Narasimha, who gives joy to Prahlada Maharaja and whose nails are like chisels on the stone like chest of the demon Hiranyakasipu.
Lord Narasimha is here and also there. Wherever I go Lord Narasimha is there. He is in the heart and is outside as well. I surrender to Lord Narasimha, the origin of all things and the supreme refuge.’
Benefit : This is a powerful mantra that when recited regularly will relieve people of their debts and insolvency however severe and acute and give protection against any further problematic situations.
Dasavatara Stotra
“Tava kara-kamala-vare nakham adbhuta-srngam,
dalita-hiranyakasipu-tanu-bhrngam,
kesava dhrta-narahari-rupa jaya jagadisa hare ||”
Meaning: O Kesava! O Lord of the universe! O Hari, who have assumed the form of half-man and half-lion, all glories to You! Just as one can easily crush a wasp between one’s fingernails, so in the same way the body of the wasp-like demon Hiranyakasipu has been ripped apart by the wonderful pointed nails on your beautiful lotus hands.’
Kamasikashtakam
“Tvayi raksati raksakaih kimanyaih,
tvayi caraksati raksakaih kimanyaih iiti niscita dhih srayami nityam,
nrhare vegavati taṭasrayam tvam॥”
Meaning: ‘O Kamasikha Narasimha! You are sarva sakthan. When you are resolved to protect some one, where is the need to seek the protection of anyone else? When you are resolved not to protect some one, which other person is capable of protecting us? There is no one. Knowing this fundamental truth, I have resolved to offer my saraṇagati at your lotus feet alone that rest at the banks of Vegavati river.’
Divya Prabandham
“Adi adi agam karaindhu isaipadip padik kannir malgi engumnadi nadi narasinga endru, vadi vaduum ivval nuthale ||”
Meaning: ‘I will dance and melt for you, within my heart, to see you, I will sing in praise of you with tears of joy, I will search for Narasiṁha and I am a householder who still searches to reach you (to attain Salvation).’
Narasimha Gayatri Mantra
“Om Nrisimhaye vidmahe vajranakhaya dhimahi tan no simhah Prachodayat |
Vajra nakhaya vidmahe tikshna damstraya dhimahi tan no narasimhah Prachodayat ||”
Meaning: ‘Om! Let us be well aware of Nrisimha, the lightning-nailed. May the Lion promote our thought and actions. Let us meditate on He who is known as the possessor of nails as hard as thunderbolts and sharp teeth. Let us all be enthused by Lord Narasimhadeva.”
Sri Narasimha Maha Mantra
It is stated in Shastra that this mantra is the essence of all kavacha mantras, or mantras meant for wearing in a kavacha (capsule). The mantra is often written on a small piece of bark, such as from the botch tree. Then it is sealed in the capsule with a tulasi (Holy Basil) leaf or even flower petals that have been offered to the deity of Lord Narasimha. After worshipping the deity of Lord Narasimha with sixteen upacharas or items of worship, the pujari or priest performs a ritual called prana-pratistha: he calls the Lord to reside in the kavacha. He then worships the kavacha. Then it has full protective power. Men can wear the kavacha around the neck or on the upper right arm, while women wear it around the neck or on the upper left arm. The Kavacha may be worn in all circumstances, at any time, or in any place.
“Ugram viram maha-vishnum jvalantam sarvato mukham |
nrisimham bhishanam bhadram mrityur mrityum namamy aham ||”
Meaning : ‘I bow down to Lord Narasimha who is ferocious and heroic like Lord Vishnu. He is burning from every side. He is terrific, auspicious and the death of death personified.’
Narasimha Prapatti
“Mata narasimha, pita narasimha
Bratha narasimha, sakha narasimha
Vidyaa narasimha, dravinam narasimha
Swami narasimha, sakalam narasimha
Itho narasimha, paratho narasimha
Yatho yatho yahihi, tatho narasimha
Narasimha devaath paro na kaschit
Tasmaan narasimha sharanam prapadye ||”
Meaning: ‘Mother is Narasimha; Father is Narasimha
Brother is Narasimha; Friend is Narasimha
Knowledge is Narasimha; Wealth is Narasimha
My Lord is Narasimha; Everything is Narasimha.
Narasimha is in this world, Narasimha is everywhere (Omnipresent)
Wherever I go, there is Narasimha
Narasimha is the Supreme Lord, there is none other than HIM
So, I humbly seek refuge in you, Shri Narasimha.’
Benefit: A simple sloka that acts as a ‘great protective shield’ at all times.

Narasimha Mantra Benefits
Narasimha Mantras, also known as Kavacha mantras have the power of protecting those who chant it. The literal meaning of Kavacha is armor or breast plate that the soldiers wear during wars to protect their bodies from the deadly weapons. In the same manner, the Kavacha mantras act as protective shields to safeguard the welfare of the devotees. If so, then imagine how powerful Narasimha Mantra could be when the sole purpose behind the incarnation of Lord Naraismha is to save his devotee.
Narasimha Mantra - For Protection
Lord Narasimha is highly benign and merciful though he might appear ferocious. He came to being in response to the answer given by Prahlad to his angry father. When Hiranyakasipu, the demon king was torturing his son Prahlad since he was devoted to Lord Vishnu, the difficulties and dangers endured by Prahlad came to a saturation point. However, he was bearing all the troubles with patience and smile with a sense of total faith and surrender. At a point, Hiranyakashipu grew weary with the unchanging attitude of his son and asked him where Lord Vishnu was and whether Prahlad could show him. To this, Prahlad said he resides in every atom of the universe. Hearing this, Hiranyakashipu struck a pillar in the palace with his mace and asked whether Lord Vishnu was there in the pillar. When Prahlad smiled in confirmation, Lord Vishnu assumed the Narasimha form and emanated from the pillar only to kill the vicious demon Hiranyakashipu with his finger nails. Prahlad witnessed the divine incarnation and wondered at the majestic appearance of the Lord. The Lord blessed Prahlad and returned to his divine abode.
Chanting Narasimha Mantra can, therefore, remove all sufferings and alleviate the troubles of people. It can bestow the state of fearlessness, peace, prosperity and tranquility.
To have Lord Narasimha in one’s favour and get the best of results from chanting His mantras, one must keep in mind the following things :
One should start chanting from a Thursday facing north.
Yellow clothes should be worn for this purpose.
A ghee lamp should be lit in front of Lord Narasimha and he should be offered with incense & flowers.
Thus, worshipping Lord Narasimha is the way to attain the ultimate salvation in life and get rid of everything evil and harmful. Chanting His mantras makes one’s life fall into sync and his mental peace is known to stay undisturbed.
