Animation Night 157: Hungary
Jó estét mindenkinek! Eljött az Animációs Éjszaka ideje.
Good evening everyone! It’s time for Animation Night.
Hungary!
Tonight I’m going to continue the grand tradition of ‘copying Aniobsessive-senpai’s homework’, and take us to visit the ‘Hungarian school of animation’, aka magyar rajzfilmiskola. They were a bunch of experimental weirdos from the period when Hungary was ruled Much like the Zagreb School from across the border in Croatia (AN 136), who were a biiiig influence, they launched away from the midcentury UPA style and experiments like Yellow Submarine to make something unique.
The best known Hungarian animated film is Son of the White Mare (1981) directed by Marcell Jankovics. Lemme quote Aniobsessive:
[White Mare] is hard to compare to other animated features. Marcell Jankovics and his team used Hungarian folk art and folk tales as the basis for a huge, mind-expanding, psychedelic adventure movie. It tells an accessible story in an art-house style — 90 minutes of searing colors and spellbinding patterns, with each character in a state of constant transformation.
This film was wildly influential, reaching people like Genndy Tarkovsky to form a big part of the DNA of Samurai Jack. But White Mare didn’t spring out of nowhere.
The 20th century for Hungary was, to put it mildly, a rough time. Here’s a really really brief version. In World War I, Hungary was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which lost the war hard and basically collapsed. In the resulting power vacuum the country was separated from Austria and went through a brief communist revolution which fell to a monarchist counterrevolution; the monarchists surrendered to the Entente in 1920 and gave up most of the country’s land. In the new peace, the new monarchy set about their agenda of ‘doing antisemitism’, which predictably got a great deal worse in the 30s following the great depression and the rise of Hitler nearby.
So in WWII, Hungary sided with the Axis. They joined Hitler in invading the USSR, and got pretty much crushed. The Hungarians started negotiations to break from the Axis and surrender, but Hitler noticed and quickly ordered his soldiers to occupy, appointing a Nazi governor; at this point the Holocaust in Hungary kicked up a gear and the Nazi-backed Hungarian government deported hundreds of thousands of Jewish people to the death camps. To brush over a messy story, within a year the Soviets counter-invaded and destroyed the fascist government, establishing Hungary as in the Soviet sphere of influence in the aftermath of the war. The Hungarian communist party, which had existed despite its ban during the war, joined forces with communists from Moscow... uneasily.
After briefly playing with elections, the Soviets reorganised Hungary as a single-party Leninist state. The new government set about the whole show-trials-and-purges-and-statues-of-the-leader routine, attacking his rivals as spies in the pocket of the Americans, or maybe Big Trotsky. A lot of messy intra-party politics took place while the country struggled economically, attempting to copy Stalin in dismantling the peasants and building heavy industry. In the 50s, a certain prime minister Imre Nagy won popularity by relaxing some of the state control and closing labour camps and so forth, but this put him at odds with Moscow, and he was attacked as a right-deviationist and driven out of politics. But not for long...
(Did you think that was an end to the antisemitism btw? Lmao no of course not. In 1953 the government tried to frame three random Jews for the abduction of Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish industrialist who saved thousands of people during the Holocaust, who in reality died in a Soviet prison. That whole affair abruptly stopped when Stalin died.)
In 1956 it all came to a head with the ‘Hungarian Revolution’, started by students, which like all such uprisings was messy but broadly was pro-Nagy and anti-Soviet. Nagy, who had only recently been returned from political exile in the wake of the ‘Khruschev Thaw’, took control of the party with his allies. He went so far as to announce that Hungary might even withdraw from the Warsaw Pact. ‘Excuse me?’ said Khruschev, and sent in the Red Army tanks to remove Nagy and his supporters, killing about 20,000 people in the process. This is one of the two incidents that led to the coinage of the word ‘tankie’, originally meaning someone who defended Khruschev’s intervention.
The next guy, János Kádár, started out by attacking the participants in the 1956 uprising, but changed his tune and declared an amnesty in the 60s, establishing a relatively relaxed set of policies nicknamed ‘Goulash Communism’ which encouraged foreign trade and consumerism. As such, it’s this period where Hungary started making a bunch of animated films.
Because yeah this is a post about cartoons actually!
In the 60s, Hungarian animators - funded by the state - were following in the footsteps of the Zagreb School, with its unique approach to timing and design philosophy. But eager ot put their own spin on it, they started introducing bright colours and textures to the UPA style, in films like Duel (1960) and Ball with White Dots (1961).
youtube
In 1968, Sándor Reisenbüchler, a colleage of Jankovics at Pannonia Film Studio with a wildly improvisational method, released his first short film The Kidnapping of the Sun and Moon, created with the assistance of his wife. The film is an absolute riot of shapes and colours, all relating a story of a many-headed dragon which devours all the stars until a hero comes to slay it. For Reisenbüchler it’s an anti-war metaphor. Despite being controversial back home, the government eagerly started spreading it abroad in Russia and US alike as a symbol of cool shit being made in Hungary.
youtube
Reisenbüchler would go on to make many more films, such as The Year of 1812 (Az 1812-es év) in 1972, but he’d still hold a special place in his heart for Kidnapping.
The British film Yellow Submarine dropped in 1968, and sent major waves into both Hungary and Yugoslavia. For Hungarian artists like Jankovics, it was the inspiration they needed to find a third pole of animation, distinct from both the Disney tradition and the UPA style. He appreciated the space it offered for inconsistency - character designs would no longer need to be identical in every shot, the messiness could be part of the style.
In 1973, Jankovics directed the first feature-length Hungarian animated film, titled Johnny Corncob (János Vitéz). Based on an 1845 epic poem, it tells the story of the worldwide adventures of a young soldier separated from his over, completed over a period of 22 months at Pannonia. The film was a huge undertaking, and its style is unlike pretty much anything before or since, with something of a Western flavour, and uniquely Hungarian outfits...
youtube
The next year, Jankovics released a much smaller project, the two-minute long Sisyphus. Jankovics was determined to constantly reinvent his style, lest his films get lost in the shadow of the ones before.
youtube
In contrast to the bright colours and textures, Sisyphus, completed in just six weeks, keeps things about as simple as possible: pure black and white silhouettes with a brush texture. Most of the 1800 drawings were by Jankovics himself, and much of the rest by Edit Szalay, who would soon become a key part of White Mare. Into the myth of Sisyphus, Jankovics channeled his own struggles with the nigh impossible task of creating the country’s first animated film. And this film proved wildly popular, running around the world from Yugoslavia to Iran. It threatened to overshadow everything else Jankovics did, and so he changed his style up completely for White Mare.
As the 70s went on, the films just got more experimental. Honeymation (Mézes-táncos) in 1975, directed Ferenc Varsáyani, decided to do a stop motion film entirely with gingerbread people. It was photographed by Gábor Csupó, who would later leave Hungary to America and co-create the Rugrats series. Eventually he would reunite with Varasáyani who would come to work on Rugrats too...
vimeo
The 70s also saw the wildly popular TV series Rabbit with Checkered Ears, dir. Zsolt Richly and written by Veronika Marék. The two became friends while writing for a childrens’ magazine, and that magazine style would adapt perfectly to depict the clumsy, floppy rabbit. In a big cabin in the yard of Pannonia, Zsolt Richly oversaw the creation of the series for years. You can read more about the story here.
And of course this whole thing was a massive success in both Hungary and pretty much everywhere else, launching both into animation. The floppy plush main character reminds me a little of Marumi from Paranoia Agent, but this one isn’t so sinister. It’s just a very cute bunny in an appealing style. All the episodes are entirely wordless, relying on the expressive movement and music to convey the story. This person seems to have uploaded the full series on Youtube, albeit not really organised into a playlist, so check it out ^^
As then we enter the 80s, Jankovics got the studio working on their biggest project, Son of the White Mare, bringing all these threads together into one massive project, the magnum opus of the Hungarian school at large. So that’s what we’re going to watch tonight! A whirlwind tour of Hungarian animation’s important short films, and Son of the White Mare. (I would show Johnny Corncob as well, but it’s late and it’s proving slow to download, so another week.)
Eventually of course the Soviet Union fell, and Hungary’s Leninist state apparently transitioned to a regular capitalist one relatively gently. Pannonia continued to function, making films up to around 2011 with the final film of Jankovics, The Tragedy of Man, but ultimately closed its doors in 2015. Jankovics himself passed away in 2021. I would love to investigate some of this later Hungarian animation, but I’ll have to save that for another day...
And so! Animation Night 157 will go live in just a minute at twitch.tv/canmom, and I plan to begin showing films on the hour (22:00 UK time)! I’d love to see you there!! Let’s check out a corner of animation history that is far too unknown, and watch a film that’s said (by someone somewhere) to be one of the best animated films of all time...
#animation night#hungarian animation#very much 'writing about what i have sources for' here - don't take this for a complete overview by any means

Viktor Orban is playing poker in Brussels these days. By blocking decision-making on important issues such as European Union enlargement, Sweden’s proposed membership in NATO, and the European budget, the Hungarian prime minister has been exasperating colleagues from other EU member states. This week, 27 national leaders have to travel to a summit in Brussels for one main reason: Orban’s continued refusal to agree to a 50 billion euro ($54.2 billion) financial aid package for Ukraine.
Orban’s tactics, however, are not very surprising when seen in historic perspective. The use of blackmail has been part of the Hungarian political playbook for centuries. In the Habsburg Empire, which Hungary belonged to until its collapse at the end of the First World War in 1918, it behaved in a similar way—and this included taking the common budget hostage.
For those wondering how the EU should deal with Orban in the future and whether he will ever stop being so difficult, this historical parallel is particularly instructive.
(Spoiler: He will not stop being difficult.)
Hungarians were a stubborn people in Habsburg times, too. Of all the nations and languages and religious groups within the multinational empire, they were easily the most demanding. They knew that Emperor Franz Joseph (1830-1916) wanted to prevent the empire from falling apart at almost all cost and would go far to accommodate them.
In the mid-19th century, when Hungary was the empire’s largest grain producer, the Hungarians even stopped food production to the rest of the empire for several years, producing just enough flour to be able to feed themselves. In what was called the Passive Resistance movement, Hungarians also stopped paying taxes and boycotted public offices.
This was their reaction to the harsh way that Vienna had squashed their political rebellion during Europe’s revolutionary years in 1848-1849. Their main demand was far-reaching autonomy. And sure enough, in the end, their civil disobedience was effective: In 1867, the empire was transformed into the so-called Dual Monarchy, a kind of alliance of two sovereign states, Austria and Hungary, each with far-reaching powers within the empire. From then on, the Hungarians were allowed practical self-rule on matters such as education and health care in their half of the empire (which also included present-day Croatia, Slovakia, and Romania). Foreign policy and defense, however, remained federal. There, the kaiser was firmly in charge.
Many historians agree that the Hungarians got the best deal of all constituent parts in the empire because of their stubbornness and tough negotiating tactics. In the Double Monarchy, Hungary prospered. Yet it was never satisfied and always pushed—or rather squeezed—the emperor for more.
In one instance, just like today, Hungary took part of the Habsburg budget hostage in order to get what it wanted: the dismantling of the federal army, which the Hungarians considered a thorn in their side. “Hungary’s integration in the EU has not effaced [Habsburg] memories that often come up and are hardly understood by West-Europeans,” French historian Catherine Horel writes in her 2021 book Histoire de la Nation Hongroise; des premiers Magyars à Viktor Orbán (or History of the Hungarian Nation: From the First Hungarians to Viktor Orban).
The Hungarians saw the imperial army as an occupational force. They wanted to have their own army. Because the emperor refused their demand, they tried to undo some of the army’s crucial underpinnings instead. For instance, they detested the federal language law that stipulated that officers and soldiers (Czechs, Slovenes, etc.) could speak their mother tongues while on duty. At the time of the Dual Monarchy, no fewer than 13 languages were spoken in the empire.
To the emperor, who spoke many of those languages more or less fluently, multilingualism was the spirit of the multinational empire. Among themselves, soldiers often spoke German, but this was by no means compulsory. Hungary detested this practice, too. In its half of the empire, only 40 percent of the people spoke Hungarian, or Magyar. But immediately after the Ausgleich of 1867—the compromise that established the Dual Monarchy—the Hungarians introduced a law forcing everyone to use Hungarian.
Non-Hungarian schools, for instance, were closed. While the Austrian half of the empire became more liberal and decentralized over time, Hungary did the opposite in its half: Everything was centralized and Magyarized. “There were hardly any representatives of the national minorities in the Hungarian Parliament (where the language was, of course, Magyar),” Habsburg expert Steven Beller writes in his book The Habsburg Monarchy, 1815-1918.
In 1903, the Hungarian parliament launched an attack on the imperial language law by refusing to approve the military budget. Just like in today’s EU, Hungary had a veto over the budget.
The emperor was furious. At that time, France, tsarist Russia, Germany, and the Ottoman Empire—the powers surrounding the Habsburg Empire—were conducting an arms race. They were spending 3 percent to 4 percent of their gross domestic product on defense. This worried the emperor a great deal. Habsburg weaponry was outdated. If war came, his empire could soon be outgunned. So, Franz Joseph implored Hungary, which had tens of thousands of soldiers in the imperial army, to behave more responsibly in the face of these serious international threats.
But the Hungarians did what they often do when everyone puts pressure on them—dig in. This is exactly how they behave nowadays in Brussels: The more that collective pressure piles up on Orban, the more the Hungarian self-image seems to confirm that they are on their own.
“We always tend to go against the rest of the world,” Hungarian ambassador Anna Siko explained a few years ago in a lively discussion on the parallels between the Habsburg Empire and the EU. “We always create tension and make other people’s lives difficult, because we need to prove every day who we are.” The reason, according to her, is that the Hungarian “allergy to others telling us what to do … makes us wild and very undiplomatic.”
Diplomats and analysts in Brussels say they are not sure what Orban is really after. His goal posts seem to shift all the time. One of the things that Orban certainly wants is to get European subsidies that Brussels currently withholds—approximately 20 billion euros ($21.7 billion)—because of Hungary’s rampant corruption and its violations of the rule of law. In order to get those funds, he blocks everything that comes along: Swedish NATO membership, the financial and military aid package for Ukraine, or the reappointment of the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen. The more vital the issue for other member states, the better.
In 1903, the emperor managed to break Hungary’s blockade with an unusual bluff: He suddenly presented a new, surprisingly liberal electoral law that gave minorities considerably more voting rights. This law, Franz Joseph announced, was to take effect in the entire empire. Budapest, hating enhanced minority rights even more than the imperial army’s language law, promptly approved the budget that it had previously blocked. Soon enough, of course, the emperor’s electoral law with enhanced minorities rights was taken off the table, too.
Following this analogy, could other 26 EU member states perhaps break the standoff with Hungary on the budget by proposing something that Orban hates more than sending 50 billion euros to Ukraine?
There is probably only one thing that would displease Hungary’s prime minister more than missing out on EU subsidies: being deprived of his voting rights in the EU Council (a procedure contained in Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union). According to diplomats who spoke with Politico, this nuclear option is currently being discussed among the other member states. However, chances that it will be used seem slim. Some national leaders apparently fear that if it is used against Orban now, it could be used against them tomorrow.
And so the 26 member states seem condemned to muddling through with Hungary. This explains why Orban, while lambasting the European Union every day, does not want an exit from the EU: He is far more powerful inside the EU than he would be outside it. He uses membership as leverage.
This is exactly what the Hungarians did in the Habsburg Empire: By being obnoxious, they obtained the best deals of all. But can you guess who left last, when the empire collapsed and all the nations had departed one by one? Exactly: It was Hungary.

Man City valuable
Man City named world's most valuable football club brand Man City has been named the most valuable football club brand in the world after topping the Brand Finance Football 50 report for the first time
Five other English clubs appear in the top 10: Man Utd (fourth), Liverpool (fifth), Arsenal (eighth), Tottenham (ninth), Chelsea (10th).
It is the first time an English club has topped the list in six years and comes after a 34 per cent growth in the club's brand since the Covid-19 pandemic.
Hugo Hensley, associate director at Brand Finance, said: "Premier League brands make up 45 per cent of the value of the top 50, and the league has the highest number of brands (18) represented; the seven from London is more than Serie A or Ligue 1 in total.
"This is most obviously due to the financial power Premier League teams possess thanks to huge broadcasting contracts, however, this is merely a reflection of the attractiveness of the league and its clubs to fans and sponsors around the world.
"Brand Finance market research shows that the league is seen as the most competitive and exciting league to watch, and is perceived as having more world-class players and clubs than any other league, while Manchester United and Liverpool were rated first and third respectively for the metric.

"Relatively equal distribution of broadcasting revenue, and the league’s reach allowing even smaller or newly promoted clubs to secure significant sponsorships, perpetuates the competitiveness that keeps the league exciting.
"Manchester City’s recent dominance could be considered a threat to the competitive nature, winning the title five times in the past six years, and echoing a problem is seen in Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and less recently in Serie A."
Twelve other British clubs made the list, too:
West Ham (16th), Newcastle (17th), Aston Villa (20th), Everton (23rd), Brighton (26th), Leicester (27th), Crystal Palace (29th), Wolves (32nd), Leeds (33rd), Celtic (42nd), Brentford (43rd), Fulham (49th).

A Newsies history lesson: Joseph Pulitzer
I haven’t done a Newsies history lesson in a while, so I thought I’d do another one about arguably one of the most interesting people in the story: Joseph Pulitzer, The World publisher and antagonist of the musical.
Buckle up, y’all, because this is a long one (but his life is worth the read, I’d say).
---
Early Life
Joseph Pulitzer was born on April 10, 1847, in Mako, Hungary to a wealthy Magyar-Jewish family. His father was a grain merchant who retired in Budapest, where Pulitzer grew up and attended school.
In 1864, when he was seventeen-years-old, Pulitzer tried enlist in the Austrian Army, Napoleon’s Foreign Legion, and the British Army, but he was rejected because of his poor eyesight and bad health.
Pulitzer still wanted to become a soldier, however, so he enlisted as a substitute for a draftee after meeting a bounty recruiter for the U.S. Union Army. Pulitzer enlisted for a year in the Lincoln Calvary, which worked for him because there were many German soldiers in the unit. Pulitzer was fluent in German and French; however, he spoke very little English.
After a year in the Lincoln Calvary, Pulitzer left for St. Louis, where he worked odd jobs as a muleteer, baggage handler, and waiter, among others.
While in St. Louis, Pulitzer studied English and the law at Mercantile Library, and it was here, actually, that his journalism career began.
The Start of Pulitzer’s Journalism Career
Pulitzer met two editors of the leading German language daily, Westliche Post, while observing and critiquing their chess game, and they offered him a job after engaging him in conversation and finding him rather impressive.
In 1872, four years after beginning work for the Westliche Post, Pulitzer had already built a reputation as a journalist. He became a publisher for the paper at age 25, and by 1878, he had bought and become owner of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, another St. Louis-based newspaper. Pulitzer was already making his mark on the world of journalism.
Pulitzer worked tirelessly to improve and change the St. Louis Post-Dispatch into a spectacular newspaper. His specialties were investigative articles and editorials exposing corruption, tax-dodgers, and gamblers, and he did it incredibly well. This type of dramatic news was popular with the public, and the St. Louis Dispatch became very popular.
The World
In 1883, Pulitzer met with Jay Gould, the financier, and bought The New York World, a newspaper close to bankruptcy. He immersed himself in The World, changing everything from its editorial policy to its format, and used some of the techniques that had helped the St. Louis Post-Dispatch prosper to build back up The World’s circulation.
“He crusaded against public and private corruption, filled the news columns with a spate of sensationalized features, made the first extensive use of illustrations, and staged news stunts,” a biographical article by Seymour Topping on the Pulitzer Prize website reads. “In one of the most successful promotions, The World raised public subscriptions for the building of a pedestal at the entrance to the New York harbor so that the Statue of Liberty, which was stranded in France awaiting shipment, could be emplaced.”
These techniques proved very successful, and over the next ten years, The World’s circulation increased to more than 600,000, and it became the largest circulating newspaper in the United States.
However, all this success came with a price that had only been building since the beginning of Pulitzer’s journalism career: both his health and his eyesight were rapidly failing, and there were many factors that only exacerbated the problems. One was Pulitzer’s unrelenting dedication to his work, and the other was a slanderous campaign against him by Charles Anderson Dana, publisher of The Sun, a competing newspaper.
Dana was frustrated by The World’s success, so he took matters into his own hands by attacking Pulitzer and his Jewish ancestry, writing him as “the Jew who had denied his race and religion”, and seeking to “alienate New York’s Jewish community from The World” (Topping).
This attack caused further stress on Pulitzer and caused his health to deteriorate to the point that he was virtually blind by 1890, when he then withdrew from the editorship of The World and was unable to return to its newsroom. Pulitzer also had severe depression, which was the partial cause of an illness that left him extremely sensitive to noise. Because of this, Pulitzer spent a great deal of the next portion of his life in soundproofed “vaults”, as he called them, “ aboard his yacht, Liberty, in the "Tower of Silence" at his vacation retreat in Bar Harbor, Maine, and at his New York mansion” (Topping).
Despite the fact that he was constantly travelling, trying in vain to find a cure for his illnesses, Pulitzer still kept a close eye on his newspapers and was very much involved in their editorial and business direction. He was so intent on keeping his communications with the newspapers secret that he actually kept a code book of approximately 20,000 names and terms.
The War, The Journal, and Yellow Journalism
1896 to 1898, Pulitzer found himself engaging in what has been described as a “bitter circulation battle” against William Randolph Hearst, who ran The New York Journal, during the years of Cuba’s rebellion against Spanish rule. The headlines and stories in both newspapers became increasingly sensationalized and inaccurate, coming to a head when the U.S. battleship Maine blew up and sank in Havana in February of 1898, and both The World and The Journal called for war against Spain.
After the Spanish-American War, Pulitzer withdrew from the battle with Hearst and what had become known as “yellow journalism” - the act of using sensationalized news, headlines, and cartoons to attract readers and increase circulation.
The Newsboys Strike of 1899
During the war, 200 publishers raised the price of a one-hundred paper bundle from 50 cents to 60 cents, which worked well for a time because so many newspapers were being sold due to the exciting headlines. Once the war ended, most papers brought their prices back down, but some--most notably The World and The Journal--did down, much to the anger of the newsboys who distributed those papers. The newsboys and girls (both groups referred to as newsies for the sake of consistency) declared a strike against the newspaper companies.
There were rallies in the name of the strike that drew more than 5,000 newsies from all over the city. Below is an excerpt from strike leader Kid Blink’s speech, quoted in an article by The New York Tribune:
“Friens and feller workers. Dis is a time which tries de hearts of men. Dis is de time when we’se got to stick together like glue…. We know wot we wants and we’ll git it even if we is blind.”
After two weeks, the newspapers and the newsies came to a compromise: the price of the papers would not decrease, but the newspaper companies would buy back any papers the newsies did not sell.
Columbia University
In 1903, Pulitzer donated $2,000,000 to Columbia University to help create the Columbia University School of Journalism. According to the State Historical Society of Missouri, “the school oversees the Pulitzer Prize, an award given to those who excel in journalism, literature, and music. The prize began with a donation from Pulitzer and was first awarded in 1917.”
“In May 1904, writing in The North American Review in support of his proposal for the founding of a school of journalism, Pulitzer summarized his credo: ‘Our Republic and its press will rise or fall together. An able, disinterested, public-spirited press, with trained intelligence to know the right and courage to do it, can preserve that public virtue without which popular government is a sham and a mockery. A cynical, mercenary, demagogic press will produce in time a people as base as itself. The power to mould the future of the Republic will be in the hands of the journalists of future generations’“ (Topping).
Political Views
Pulitzer was active in politics in his twenties, and was elected to the Missouri state legislature in 1869. From 1871 to 1872, he helped to organize the Liberal Republican Party in Missouri, which nominated Horace Greeley to run for President in 1872. Greeley lost the election, the party collapsed, and Pulitzer became and remained a Democrat for the rest of his life.
According to the United States History website, “Pulitzer supported organized labor, attacked trusts and monopolies, and exposed political corruption. He was committed to raising the standards of the journalism profession.”
Joseph Pulitzer and Theodore Roosevelt
There isn’t much on what Pulitzer wrote about Roosevelt before the latter was elected governor (at least not where I have easy access to it), but there is still controversy an event in 1909, when The World exposed a fraudulent payment of $40 million by the US to the French Panama Canal Company. Roosevelt then accused Pulitzer of spreading false information, and the federal government indicted Pulitzer for criminally libeling Roosevelt and the banker J.P. Morgan, as quoted in an article in The Herald and News (quotes by Roosevelt):
“The real offender is Mr. Joseph Pulitzer, editor and proprietor of the World. While the criminal offence of which Mr. Pulitzer has been guilty is in the form of a libel upon individuals, the great injury done is in blackening the good name of the American people. It should not be left to a private citizen to sue Mr. Pulitzer for libel. He should be prosecuted for libel by the government authorities.
“In point of encouragement of iniquity, in point of infamy, of wrongdoing, there is nothing to choose between a public servant who betrays his trust, a public servant who is guilty of blackmail or theft or financial dishonesty or any kind, and a man guilty as Mr. Jos[sic] Pulitzer has been guilty in this instance. It is, therefore, a high national duty to bring to justice this villifier of the American people, this man who wantonly and wickedly and without one shadow of justification seeks to blackmail the character of reputable private citizens and to convict the government of his own country in the eyes of the civilized world of wrong doing of the basest and foulest kind, when he has not one shadow of justification of any sort or description for the charge he has made. The attorney general has under consideration the form in which the proceedings against Mr. Pulitzer shall be brought.”
However, the courts ultimately dismissed the indictments against Pulitzer, and he won an important journalistic victory concerning freedom of the press.
Death
Joseph Pulitzer died on October 29, 1911, aboard his yacht. The following is an excerpt from his obituary in the New York Times:
“CHARLESTON, S.C., Oct. 29.--Joseph Pulitzer, proprietor of The New York World and St. Louis Post-Dispatch, died aboard his yacht, the Liberty, in Charleston Harbor at 1:40 o'clock this afternoon. The immediate cause of Mr. Pulitzer's death was heart disease. Although he had been in poor health for some time, there was no suspicion on the part of those accompanying him that his condition was serious.
The change for the worse came at about 2 o'clock this morning, when he suffered an attack of severe pain. By daylight he appeared to be better and fell asleep soon after 10:30. He awoke at 1 o'clock and complained of pain in his heart. Soon he fell into a faint and expired at 1:40 o'clock.
Mrs. Pulitzer, who had been sent for, arrived from New York today, and reached the yacht shortly before her husband died. At his bedside also when the end came was his youngest son, Herbert, who has been cruising with his father.
Mr. Pulitzer's body will be taken north at 4:30 tomorrow afternoon on a special Pullman car. The funeral will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery in New York probably toward the end of this week.
Mr. Pulitzer's son, Joseph, Jr., is now on his way from St. Louis with his wife, and one of his daughters will come from Florida. Ralph Pulitzer, the eldest son, is on the way to Charleston, and will meet the train en route.
Up to an hour and a half before his death Mr. Pulitzer's mind remained perfectly clear. His German secretary had been reading to him an account of the reign of Louis the Eleventh of France, in whose career Mr. Pulitzer had always taken the liveliest interest. As the secretary neared the end of his chapter and came to the death of the French King, Mr. Pulitzer said to him:
‘Leise, ganz leise, ganz leise.’ (softly, quite softly.)
These were the last words he spoke.”
Joseph Pulitzer may have been the antagonist in Newsies, but he also definitely led a very interesting life, and it is safe to say that he and his newspaper had a great impact on journalism, and will continue to for years to come.

1) white peach – mélyebb bowl-ban jégbe fagyott egész fahéj rudak tetején, hidegen gőzölgő – nem tudom rá a szakszót- fagyasztott (valószínűleg folyékony nitrogénben) barackos pillecukor, japán yuzu géllel a tetején. 3) lick it up: foie gras, mango – az egyik szakács prezentálta, a Kiss- Lick It Up c. dal kíséretében. A curry szerintem hidegen infúzionált, a kagyló nyers. Top 3 – szépen lezárta a főételeket. 22) rose of tonka beans – egyforma ízű vörös-fehér rózsák jellegzetes tonka bab ízzel – csak ennyi maradt meg. 23) flower power lychee – indiai hagyományos virágot (nevére sajnos nem emlékszem) formájú tart, alulról parféval, tetején géllel; mindegyik alkotó elem intenzív lychee ízű, kellemesen édes. 24) dark side of the moon – Pink Floyd tribute, étcsokoládé ’kosár’ alulról gél, és különböző gyümölcs mártások körben- dinnye, áfonya, mango.... 25) yin & yang, saffron & pistachio – jég hideg olvadós keksz és parfait, szezámmagra tálalva, markáns ízekkel.

The Stone, Dying Wish
The Stone, Dying Wish - https://metalindex.hu/2022/06/15/the-stone-dying-wish/ -
A második a Thrash Mosh Clubhoz köthető, ahol a Landler Művelődési Házban, az Undertaking előzenekaraként a kor kemény zenét játszó alakulatai mutatkozhattak be komolyabb létszámú közönség előtt.
The Stone: Visitor in the Paradise (2000/2002)
Ők öten jegyzik a The Stone 1999-es, mindössze 50 példányban kiadott demóját, a The Groving One-t, amelyet aztán a csapat egyetlen nagylemeze, a 2000-ben kazettán, két évvel később pedig CD-n is megjelenő Visitor in the Paradise követett.
A The Stone még a CD megjelenésének évében feloszlott.
Dying Wish: Never-Ending Road (2001)
Életemben először 1992-ben, Püspökladányban ültem lovon, négy évvel később pedig ezen a településen alakult meg a Dying Wish. A két eseménynek – a helyszínt leszámítva – nyilván semmi köze egymáshoz, viszont első találkozásunkkor „régi ismerősként” üdvözöltem a zenekart, tudva, milyen miliőből érkeztek a színtérre. A ma már magyar nyelven előadott, melodikus death metalt játszó csapat a debütalbum megjelenésének idején még szimfonikus heavy/powerben utazott, a tiszta énekre csak bizonyos nótákban válaszoltak az alapító gitáros, Papp Lajos reszelős torokhangjai.
Az első demón (The Night Embraces Me – 1999) egy személyben Lajos volt a banda frontembere, ezt követően vették be – hatodik tagként – Monori Györgyöt énekesnek. Az együttes első három anyagán Árva Péter gitározott, a Never-Ending…-re érkezett Ács Sándor, aki a mai napig a DW tagja.
Ezen anyag kapcsán is van egy erős „made in Hungary”-érzésem. Ennek oka nyilván a történelmileg adott, hard rockos gyökerekben, plusz a túlzottan előtérbe tolt, szöveg-centrikus, jellegzetesen intonált, tisztán formált énekben keresendő.
Akárcsak a The Stone bemutatkozó nagylemeze, ez az album is billentyűs intróval nyit (Never and Forever…). A hörgős ének először a harmadikként felhangzó Land of Sorrow-ban kap teret, majd még néhány másik dalban is előkerül (Struggle Inside, The Wanderer of the Sky). Az anyag legnagyobb slágere egyértelműen a Fragments of the Past, amelynek refrénje ennyi év kihagyás után is megmaradt bennem. Egyes dalokat ízlésesen díszítenek szintis girlandokkal, a legizgalmasabb riffelésért pedig a The Last Journey-nek ítélek meg magamban pluszpontot.

SAIL 2017 - World’s youth attracted by the timeless challenge of the Finn - 2017
22 agosto 2017 - of the largest Finn Silver Cups on record is about to begin on the largest lake in Central Europe. Nearly 50 young Finn sailors from 21 countries and four continents are gathering at Balatonfüred, a popular resort town on Lake Balaton’s northern shore. The list of entrants could read like a who’s who for the 2020, or 2024 Olympic Games, including both those who have experienced Olympic competition, and those who are taking their first steps on the long, personal and physically challenging journey towards that quadrennial pinnacle. The host club is the MVM Hungarian Power Companies Sport Club (Magyar Villamos Művek Sportegyesület- MVM SE). The sailing club of MVM SE has an idyllic location overlooking the race area with lawns and tree lined boat parks leading down to the water. The sailors are all being made to feel very welcome as the build up continues for the first races on Tuesday. Within the impressive line-up, three sailors have won the title before and one has gone to the Olympics already. The defending champion is Phillip Kasüske from Germany. He hasn’t put as much time in the boat as he would have liked, having just returned from the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, where he was the wing trimmer on SVB Team Germany. “This year I'm trying to defend the title, but not having sailed the Finn as much as the others during the season it is going to be a very hard task.” Last year in Aarhus, Kasüske took the title off Ondrej Teply, from the Czech Republic. Teply is optimistic about his chances of a second title. “I am feeling good. I had a bit slower beginning of the season, but after some training in summer I am starting to feel better in the boat, so I hope I will be able to show it in the Silver cup. Balaton can be a light and tricky place, and with the number boats here it could be an interesting regatta. Anyway, my goals are to be around top three like for every junior worlds, and let’s see what happens.” His strongest opposition could come from the new U23 European Champion, Henry Wetherell, from Britain. Wetherell won the title convincingly in May in Marseille while also placing sixth in the senior fleet. Having only joined the Finn fleet last year he feels he is making good progress. “I feel like I'm constantly progressing and making gains. At the last Silver Cup I had only sailed the boat for a couple of weeks, so compared to last year I am 100 times more comfortable with the boat, the setup and my fitness. I have a great group to train with so we are always pushing each other to improve.” He says he was not too surprised at clinching his first Finn title earlier this year. “I had a great year training with the team and I literally felt as though I was going faster and faster each session. Over the past couple of events before the Europeans I had still been learning the boat. Obviously the format helped me jump up a few spots in the end but over the week I felt I was going well.” He has set his goals high this week. “My goal for the event is to win. I know the venue is quite light and tricky and there are some really good light wind sailors in the fleet so it will be a tough event. But it's easier saying it than doing it so we will have to wait and see who is the best on the day.” The third former champion present in Balatonfüred is Arkadiy Kistanov, from Russia, who won on home waters in 2011. This year will be his final attempt as he will be too old in 2018. “It was pretty tricky for me to take part in the Silver Cups. Every year I expected something, but every year someone stronger came. I really think the level of top 10 sailors at the Silver Cup should be very high this year.” “I have three competitions in one month, so I will try to get a good result but I’m not focused only on this aim. This last Silver Cup for me is something special. I want to have some nice, tricky races. I expect light winds and will push; the conditions are good for me and I cannot wait to start racing.” There are lots of other stories to tell this week. Here are a few more: Facundo Olezza is he only sailor here with Olympic experience. He placed third in last year’s Silver Cup, just before he went to Rio for the Olympics, where he placed ninth after winning two races. One sailor who could surprise this week is Lars Johan Brodtkorb. He still splits his time between the Europe dinghy and Finn sailing and is too heavy for one and not really heavy enough for the other. A double Europe World Champion, a few weeks back he jumped straight into an OK Dinghy and won the European title after just four days in the boat. This should give him extra confidence as he approaches what could turn into a light wind decider later in the week. Last year Jan Orel turned to Finn sailing to turn his life around. This year his younger brother Liam has also begun to sail the Finn. A top Slovenian Optimist sailor in his younger days, he later turned to the Laser and windsurfing, before ending up in the Finn. He’s only done a few months training so far so, but his brother rates him highly for such little time spent in the boat. Another newcomer is Taavi Valter Taveter. His father Imre sailed two Olympics in the Finn and is in Balatonfüred this week coaching his son. Sailing since the age of six, he was successful in the Optimist class and won several Laser Radial national titles before turning to cross country skiing, for which, now at 190 cm and 97 kg, he feels he is too big. Then, “the old love (sailing) was in his heart, so he decided to start sailing Finn.” His first international Finn regatta was this year’s Kiel Week, where he finished 25th. Later we went to Warnemünder Week and he finished with good second place behind Jan Kurfeld, the 2007 Silver Cup winner. Luke Muller, from the USA, is sailing in his second Finn Silver Cup. Last year he took part in the Europeans and was Caleb Paine’s training partner in Rio [Paine went on to twin the bronze medal], before focussing on school. He said he also gained a lot from training alongside Paine. “It was great because it was by first time using really good equipment. I was fast tracked onto Caleb's Olympic kit and that was very helpful to see what the boat should feel like. Training and doing practice races with the Olympic fleet was extremely motivating and forced to train at my very best.” He feels the progress he had made so far has been positive. “I feel that I have made many strides working with Luther [Carpenter] as my coach. I am identifying opportunities on the race course much faster and my knowledge of sail trim is tenfold what it was last year. The only issues I am having now have been due to a lack of training volume, but focus on those weaknesses has helped mitigate them.” He is very excited to be sailing the Silver Cup this year. “It is where the best youth Finn sailors come together to compete. My goal is to just sail with a clear head and practice the things I have been working on recently. I think there will be a few guys gunning for the win and I hope to be one of those, but we will see, as Balaton will present a unique challenge.” The practice race takes place Monday afternoon. While the sailors who arrived early have been enjoying the fresh to strong winds over the past few days the breeze is forecast to fall away gradually over the coming week. Thirteen races are scheduled from Tuesday to Sunday to decide the 2017 U23 Finn World Champion.

What Makes Hungary The Top R&D Talent Hotspot In Eastern Europe
“Land of Magyars” or Hungary as the rest of the world know it, is Central European land-locked country. Nestled in the Carpathian Basin, Hungary is unique not only for speaking a Uralic language that is not related to any other major European language but also for its skilled IT and R&D talent pool. A combination of factors such as geographical accessibility, the world’s third-fastest 4G network speed, an innovation-oriented mindset, a strong focus on higher education through dedicated public universities, and a vibrant technology start-up ecosystem has made Hungary an attractive location in Eastern Europe for setting up global delivery centers.
Hungary’s unique attributes have already drawn several large organizations to build their presence in the country. The Land of Magyars is already home to many organizations across varied verticals like engineering, technology, FMCG, manufacturing, medical devices, healthcare, and automotive, to name a few.
Hungary Rising
With a population of ~10Mn, of which nearly 4.5Mn is working, Hungary is the fifth most populous country in Central and Eastern Europe. Budapest, with its 1.8Mn inhabitants, is not just the capital city, but also the hotspot where the majority of R&D centers are concentrated in. Debrecen, Szeged, and Miskolc are the other cities that are slowly emerging as technology talent hubs in Hungary besides Budapest. In fact, Debrecen is emerging as a key destination for mechanical and software talent. Low operational and functional costs in the city is attracting MNCs to set up their businesses in Debrecen.
Hungary has a diverse technology ecosystem with software development being one of the most dynamic sectors. The sector contributes as much as 6% to the country’s economy. The Information Technology vertical on the other hand is contributing ~15% y-o-y. Besides these, Hungary’s technology ecosystem is a hotbed of technology talent, thanks to the various ecosystem players such as universities, technology start-ups, and the existing R&D, delivery centers, and shares services centers across functions like finance, accounting, HR, customer services, and IT tech support.
6 Factors propelling Hungary to the top of the Globalization chart
1. Geography
Budapest is strategically located in central Hungary, at the crossroads of three main pan-European transportation corridors. Hungary has 6 international airports, of which 2 are in Budapest. From most places in Europe, Budapest is a mere two-hour flight ride away. Additionally, Hungary boasts of more than 1400 kilometers of motorways according to the State Motorway Management Plc. The Hungarian motorway network is comprised of 13 motorways, 13 expressways, and some fast roads. Thus, Hungary’s strategic location makes it an attractive location for organizations to consider it to set up their global centers in.
2.Communication Network
Hungary has the highest rate of broadband penetration among the V4 countries. V4 is a political and cultural alliance between 4 Eastern European nations – the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary. Further, thanks to the presence of five of the major global network and telecommunications companies located in Hungary, the country has the third-fastest 4G network speed in the world. This not only helps in faster communication, but also helps large organizations and tech start-ups working on cutting-edge technology products and services.
3. Innovation Mindset
Hungary has notably improved its position in the overall ranking in the Global Innovation Index, jumping up six positions since 2017 to reach 33 in 2018. Also, Hungary improved its ranking in the Tholons Services Globalization Country Index that ranks the top 50 Digital Nations, jumping up to 22 in 2019. Hungary has made considerable efforts in areas such as talent, skill and quality, cost and infrastructure, innovation/digital, business catalyst, etc., to leap 7 places in one year.
The top technology start-ups of Hungary have a high focus on building cybersecurity solutions, developer platforms, AI/ML and Big Data platforms. Hungary is home to ~300 technology start-ups, some of which have raised significant amounts of funding. Almotive is a case in point. Almotive is a provider of camera-first, AI-powered, Level 5 self-driving technology that is engineered to answer all the challenges of autonomous mobility. Till date, the start-up has raised USD 47.5Mn in funding and employs 100+ technology talent. Technology organizations need to have Hungary on their radar when exploring Eastern Europe for possible R&D center setup.
4. Universities
Hungary houses more than 40 colleges and universities, with 6 of these making it to the respected QS World University Rankings 2019. Across all courses offered in these institutions, there are over 300,000 graduates, of which 3,000+ are enrolled in software and technology-related courses.
The three largest universities in the country are the University of Szeged, Eötvös Loránd University, and the University of Debrecen, offer technological courses. The University of Debrecen is one of the oldest continuously operating institutions of higher education focused on Engineering and Technology-related programs. The 40+ universities offer numerous undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in engineering and technology-related subjects, helping boost the technology talent pool year on year.
5. R&D Tax Rate
The Hungarian government offers an R&D tax relief through a tax allowance for R&D centers, allowing them a full exemption from social security contributions. The corporate tax rate in Hungary stands at 9%, a record-low since it peaked to 50% in 1989. Further, Hungary ranks fifth among OECD and other major economies, in terms of the total volume of government support for business R&D, equivalent to 0.31% of GDP. In fact, tax incentives account for nearly 50% of the total public support for business R&D in Hungary.
6. Installed Engineering and Technology Talent Pool
We analyzed the Hungarian installed talent pool by leveraging DRAUP’s proprietary Talent Module. Of the total 4.5Mn working population, 4K+ is installed fresh STEM talent pool and an additional 2.5K+ is start-up talent pool. Further, there is a total of 26,000 installed engineering and technology talent pool.
The vertical-wise split of the installed technology talent pool illustrated below indicates a skewed number towards computer software and IT, making Hungary an attractive destination for organizations to set up their global R&D centers in.
Hungary hungry for Globalization?
Hungary’s geographical advantage, the high-speed communication network, a dynamic tech start-up ecosystem, the skilled technology talent, and the university ecosystem have all driven Hungary to be one of the favored destinations for large organizations to set up centers. The innovation mindset and dedicated government efforts to attract foreign companies to set up shop don’t hurt Hungary’s cause either. Any organization looking to globalize should have Hungary on their radar.

Asustor AS4004T NAS Review
Every month we see a greater demand for faster file sharing devices that can support higher capacities. Let’s face it, 1Gbps connectivity inside of your house is slowly dying. The next step up from 1Gbps speeds is 10Gbps. I remember a few years ago 10Gbe networking wasn’t affordable for your average household and only enterprise companies were able to afford them. Today we can buy a 10Gbps switch for just a few hundred bucks and if you already have a 10Gbps network ready then you probably looking for a new NAS device. NAS manufacturers acknowledge the change in the small offices and household and so they release newer devices with 10Gbps capabilities. My test subject comes from Asustor, AS4004T. AS4004T is a four-bay Network Attached Storage device that is 10Gbps ready and backward compatible with 1Gbps networks. This NAS is powered by Marvel Armada 7K Dual-Core Processor and has 2GB of DDR4 RAM by Toshiba. Review Sample Provided by: ASUSTOR Product Name: AS4004T Price at time of review: $ 359.00 USD MSRP Product was given in exchange for work done to produce this review. Packaging The sample arrived in a plain shipping box however actual product packaging is similar to other Assistor’s NAS products. Asustor signature packaging is mostly white with blue images and detailed descriptions. Check out our other Asustor reviews if you are curious. Inside of the shipping box AS4004T is securely packaged in the protective foam and actual device has a plastic bag around it to prevent any accidental scratches.

Closer Look at the ASUSTOR AS4004T AS4004T is a 4-bay device that has ABS plastic shell with an aluminum frame on the inside. The color of the entire shell is black however the frame is painted silver. On the front of the device, there are two buttons, one for power and one for copying to the NAS from an external source. AS4004T also has a set of front-facing LEDs which show the hard drive and network activities. In addition to buttons and LEDs, there is a single USB 3.0 connection in the front for any external devices you may want to use. There are no ventilation holes on either side of the device. AS4004T is not completely square as it has a stylish pop-up design on both sides of the device. To gain access to the hard drives you would need to remove the front bezel which is magnetically attached to the case. To keep AS4004T on the flat surfaces Asustor glues four rubber pads on the bottom of the enclosure. At the bottom of the device there are air intake slots. AS4004T is actively cooled by a 120mm fan. On the back of the device, there is one USB 3.0 Connector, one 10GbE jack, 2 1Gbe jacks, a power connector, and a Kensington security port. To remove hard drive sleds, you need to operate a small lever in the front of the drive and pull it out. The drive sleds do not require any tools or screws to install drives in them. Hard drives are being held by a pair of clips.
AS4004T is very well packaged and grounded. As you can see from the pictures the entire shell is grounded in multiple places. I don’t think I have ever seen this much grounding tape on a device like this. The motherboard is extremely clean and has no over fluxing spots or excess of soldering on the components. The CPU and 10GbE controllers are passively cooled by a pair of aluminum heatsinks. On the back of the board, I found a metal cage that is soldered on. Daughter board which connected the drives to the motherboard is extremely clean as well. Here are some of the chips I found on in AS4004T.
The CPU of this device is by Marvell, Armada 7K Dual-core ARMv8 Cortex-A72 Embedded Processor (88F7020-A2).
The 10GbE controller is also by Marvell, Alaska Single 10GBase-T/NBase-T Ethernet Controller (88x3310-BUS4).
AS4004T has 2 GB of RAM by Samsung, DDR4 Ram Modules (K4A8G16 5WB BCRC). These are soldered on and cannot be upgraded.
Marvell USB 3.0 Controller (RTS5412) supports the two USB 3.0 connectors in AS4004T.
The 1Gbps connection is supported by (2x) Marvell Energy Efficient Ethernet Controllers (88E1512-NNP2).
The Disk On Module (DOM) is supported by Toshiba Memory (QA3554).
The Disk On Module controller is by SiliconMotion, USB 2.0 Dual Channel Flash Controller (SM3252q BB). ASUSTOR Software ASUSTOR Start-up Wizard could be found in the previous review of AS1002Tv2 as it is identical. The detailed information on the Startup Wizard could be found here. ASUSTOR Data Master Overview also could be found in my previous review of AS1002Tv2 which could be found here. ADM 3.2.7 RRE3 offers some small improvements and bug fixes. A list of all of the changes could be found here. SFP-10G-T-S (10GbE) adapter was used for all 10GbE benchmarks. Network Layout For all tests, the NAS was configured to use a single network interface. Network cards were used to test 1Gbps (copper) and 10 Gbps (SFP+) connections. For 1Gbps connection one CAT 6 cable was connected to the MikroTik CRS317-1G-16S+RM from the NAS and one CAT 6 cable was connected to the workstation from the switch. Testing was done on the PC with only 1 network card active. For 10Gbps connection one Cat 6 cable was connected to MikroTik CRS317-1G-16S+RM from the NAS and one Fiber 10Gb cable was connected to the workstation from the switch. The switch was cleared of any configuration. Jumbo frames were used (9000 MTU) on the workstation, NAS and the switch. Network drivers used on the workstation are 5.50.14643.1 by Mellanox Technologies. (Driver Date 8/26/2018) (10GbE adapter) and 9.15.11.0 by Intel (Driver Date 10/14/2011) Software All testing is done based off a single client accessing the NAS. Both of the software were installed on the RAM Drive by ImDisk Virtual Disk Driver. Crystal Disk Mark is an old favorite disk benchmarking software which we have used for many years. It provides us with useful information on read and write speeds of the targets. You can get your own free copy right here. ATTO Disk Benchmark gives a good insights on the read and write speeds of the drive. In our tests, we used it against the "share" on the NAS. ATTO Disk Benchmark could be download right here. All tests were run a total of three times then averaged to get the final result. RAID 0,5 and 10 were tested for 1GbE and 10GbE connections. Tests were run after all the RAID arrays were fully synchronized. RAID Information
Images courtesy of Wikipedia JOBD or Just a Bunch Of Disks is exactly what the name describes. The hard drives have no actual raid functionality and are spanned at random data is written at random. RAID 0 is a stripe set and data is written across the disks evenly. The advantage of RAID 0 is speed and increased capacity. With RAID 0 there is no redundancy and data loss is very possible. RAID 1 is a mirrored set and data is mirrored from one drive to another. The advantage of RAID 1 is data redundancy as each piece of data is written to both disks. The disadvantage of RAID 1 is write speed is decreased as compared to RAID 0 due to the write operation is performed on both disks. RAID 1 capacity is that of the smallest disk. RAID 10 combines the 1st two raid levels and is a mirror of a stripe set. This allows for better speed of a RAID 0 array but the data integrity of a RAID 1 array. RAID 5 is a stripe set with parity. RAID 5 requires at least 3 disks. Data is striped across each disk, and each disk has a parity block. RAID 5 allows the loss of one drive without losing data. The advantage to RAID 5 is read speeds increase as the number of drives increase but the disadvantage is write speeds are slower as the number of drives is increased. There is overhead with RAID 5 as the parity bit needs to be calculated and with software
RAID 5 there is more of a performance hit. RAID 6 expands on RAID 5 by adding an additional parity block to the array that is distributed across all the disks. Since there are two parity blocks in the array more overhead is used with a RAID 6 array. For a full breakdown of RAID levels, take a look at the Wikipedia article here. RAID configurations are a highly debated topic. RAID has been around for a very long time. Hard drives have changed, but the technology behind RAID really hasn’t. So what may have been considered ideal a few years ago may not be ideal today. If you are solely relying on multiple hard drives as a safety measure to prevent data loss, you are in for a disaster. Ideally, you will use a multi-drive array for an increase in speed and lower access times and have a backup of your data elsewhere. I have seen arrays with hot spares that had multiple drives fail and the data was gone. Following Benchmarks were performed via 1GbE connectivity. Raid 0 1Gbps Raid 10 1Gbps Raid 5 1Gbps Following Benchmarks were performed via 10GbE connectivity. Raid 0 10Gbps Raid 10 10Gbps Raid 5 10Gbps Conclusion and Final Thoughts There is a lot to Asustor AS4004T than just a pretty outer shell. When we review hardware here at Modders-Inc we really get down into performance and statistics of a device and AS4004T treatment was no different. For the short time that I had with AS4004T, I have tested and used this device as I would any other NAS on my network. Moving large files and installing software from Asustor App Central was easy and straight forward. I have experience with ADM so it was easy for me to navigate. ADM is easy to work with as everything is intuitive and straight forward. Asustor AS4004T is powered by Marvell Armada 7K Dual Core Embedded processor and while using the device I have noticed CPU activity times in upper 70-80% while transferring large files across the network. Based on the benchmarks and the data they have produced AS4004T should be able to push data much faster while using 10GbE connectivity. At times it felt like the Armada 7K CPU had a difficult time keeping up with the Alaska 10GbE controller. Working with 1Gbps connection I saw no issues lag or choking.
ADM software which drives AS4004T is powerful and flexible and comes with App Central plugin through which you can install and manage a decent number of applications. Most of the applications are open sourced however, some are not such as Surveillance Center for your home IP Cam Security. Right now, Asustor AS4004T retails for about $ 360 USD and I think that is a fair price considering similar units sell for about the same. Asustor also has a two-bay unit, AS4002T for about $ 250 USD. So, if you are looking for a 10GbE NAS, AS4004T is a pretty good and affordable device to have around for your daily file sharing activities. While not quite as fast as other 10-gigabit NAS devices we've tested, it certainly gets the job done. And with the 3-year warranty how can you go wrong? Read the full article

50 days of Eurovision: Day 10
youtube
Good morning, folks! It’s day 10 of eurovisionfanblog’s 50 days of Eurovision challenge, and the task today is to share one’s favourite non-English ESC song ever. For me, this would be pretty difficult to do - given that 90% of my favourites at the Eurovision are non-English songs - were it not for the fact that I have a clear and dear favourite ESC song ever that happens to be in a foreign language. For a second day running, I must salute the Magyars, as that song is their 1994 début, Kinek mondjam el vétkeimet.
This is an example of Eurovision meant to me - a simple performance of a heartfelt song whose sincerity and beauty transcended language barriers. It’s an extraordinary song - gentle but powerful, needing little more than guitar and a voice. No ostentations or gimmicks here, just pure emotion and some of the most intriguing and darkly poëtic lyrics sent to the contest. As much as I love the winning song of ‘94, I really wish Europe voted as the Nordics and Ireland did and gave Hungary the victory.

Például amikor valaki valakinek a valakije, ott gyakran 4-5 féle vezetéknév is felvehető, mindenhez szigorú nyelvtani szabályok társulnak persze.
