United Keep Dump

Despite a bounce-back season under new boss Erik ten Hag that saw them finish third in the Premier League, win the Carabao Cup and reach the Europa League semifinals, Manchester United face several challenges this season.

First and foremost, this team is still in "build mode," as many of the pieces aren't natural fits for the style of football Ten Hag wants to play. (It's also the style that got him the job.) Second, there remains uncertainty over whether the club will be sold or whether it'll take on new investment (or whether the Glazer family will simply maintain the status quo). As a result, budgets remain relatively tight (by United standards anyway).

United have budgeted for a summer net spend of roughly £120 million ($153m,) plus whatever they can raise from outgoing players. They've already spent nearly half of that on signing Mason Mount from Chelsea, and they'll probably want to bring in a striker, a goalkeeper and possibly help in midfield as well. That will require some careful moves in the summer.

David DE GEA (32 years old, contract expired in 2023) OGDEN: "United had the option to extend his contract by one year, but they chose not to because he was on massive wages -- only Cristiano Ronaldo earned more in the past few seasons -- and instead tried to get him to agree to a short-term extension, albeit on less money. That didn't work out, so now he's gone and I think it's time to move on.

"I don't care how many Golden Gloves he wins. He makes a ton of mistakes, and he's not suited to Ten Hag."

MARCOTTI: "I think you need to turn this into a positive. Let De Gea test the waters. If it's true that they wanted him to take a 50% pay cut to stay and he turned them down … well, that's around £8m a year. Very few teams in Europe can afford to pay a keeper that, and those who can aren't looking for a keeper, let alone De Gea.

"Use this time to look for a No. 1, and if it doesn't work out, I think you can always go back to him. … Unless he goes to Saudi Arabia, he won't find a club that will pay him that sort of money."

Dean HENDERSON (26, 2025) OGDEN: "He wants to play regularly and Nottingham Forest are willing to sign him, so if you get a No. 1, whether De Gea or somebody else, you can let Henderson leave and maybe make £30m or so in transfer fees. If not, you have to keep him."

MARCOTTI: "I don't think it would be a tragedy if you transfer him and then bring back De Gea or even someone like Yann Sommer, maybe even on loan if it means giving you another £30m to spend on fees for the centre-forward you need. You're not going to fix every position in one window anyway. And if you end up keeping him, you'll probably need to extend him as well."

Tom HEATON (37, 2024) OGDEN: "Heaton is a good reserve keeper, but at his age, he wants to play. He had an offer from Luton Town and was tempted, but United are blocking it because they may need him if they let Henderson go and they don't reach a new deal with De Gea.

"Ideally you'd let him go; I don't see how you can until you've sorted this out."

MARCOTTI: "I don't see what the big deal is here frankly. The man is 37, he was their No. 3, he hasn't played a minute of league football since 2020. Just let him go. You can always find a backup keeper on loan, like they did last year with Jack Butland."

Nathan BISHOP (23, 2024) MARCOTTI: "I'm a fan of having a young player as your third keeper. He's got league experience at Southend and at Mansfield Town in League Two, so keep him around.

"Like many United players, he has a club option extension that you can trigger if he suddenly looks good and you want to offer him a deal. There's no point loaning him or trying to sell him at this stage."

Lisandro MARTINEZ (25 years old, contract expires in 2027)

Raphael VARANE (30, 2025) OGDEN: "He has a patchy fitness record, so I wouldn't extend his deal, not least because United have the option of a one-year extension. You can wait and make a decision on that."

Harry MAGUIRE (30, 2025) OGDEN: "You have to move him on. I don't know where, and it might have to be on loan because of his wages and his remaining contract, but you have to move on. He is Man United's fourth choice at centre-back and Gareth Southgate has made it clear that he needs to play if he is to be considered for England's Euros squad next summer."

MARCOTTI: "We've been here before. You're going to have a huge problem finding a club that might want to take him on a permanent basis. I think you have to be open to a loan, maybe even paying a part of his wages, not least because you probably don't want to loan him to a top-six club with whom you're competing."

Victor LINDELOF (28, 2024) OGDEN: "I'm not a massive fan, though he did very well when he came in for Lisandro Martinez after his injury and when he's not playing alongside Harry Maguire. He's a solid squad player. I don't think you need to extend his contract; you can just trigger the one-year option in January if needed."

Phil JONES (31, 2023) MARCOTTI: "He started four league games in the last four years and became the butt of many a cruel joke. It's not surprising that the club let him go as a free agent. You just hope that he finds some serenity, whether in football or elsewhere."

Eric BAILLY (29, 2024) MARCOTTI: "You won't get much for him in terms of transfer fees, not least because he had a difficult season at Marseille last year, making just five league starts, getting injured and then not getting back into the team. Ivory Coast are hosting the Africa Cup of Nations in January so he'll want to get match fit, which means he presumably will be open to a move."

eden MENGI (21, 2024) OGDEN: "He didn't play last year, so loan him out. If he does well and proves he's fit and can contribute, you can always trigger the one-year option and then look to extend him."

Luke SHAW (27, 2027)

Tyrell MALACIA (23, 2026)

Alex TELLES (30, 2024) OGDEN: "You have to find him a new club and recoup what you can. He did well enough at Sevilla last year, but he can't defend and there's no need for United to carry three left-backs."

MARCOTTI: "Telles may be more of a natural wing-back, but I don't think he's a bad player at all. If the club is determined to go with Malacia and Shaw, fine, but then loan him out and, if he does well, trigger the one-year extension.

"Who knows what's going to happen? It's insurance against Luke Shaw having to play centre-back and being stuck with Malacia as your starter."

Brandon WILLIAMS (22, 2024) OGDEN: "He's had a ton of injuries and only played six minutes of football last year in the Carabao Cup. He played regularly when on loan at Norwich the year before, so I'd look to find him a new club and get what I can."

MARCOTTI: "Again, if you have that one-year club option situation, why not use it? See if he can go on loan somewhere and relaunch his career. Letting him leave on a permanent deal right now makes no sense: nobody is going to give you money for a guy who played six minutes of football in the previous 12 months. Plus, he can offer cover for both full-back positions."

Alvaro FERNANDEZ (20, 2024) OGDEN: "He played a lot at Preston in the Championship last year and he's yet another left-back. Keep him around as a squad player. If you like what you see you can always trigger the one-year extension or give him a whole new deal."

Diogo DALOT (24, 2028) OGDEN: "I can't believe they gave him a five-year deal. He's average. This is Manchester United's fatal flaw: sure, extend his contract, but why give him five years when he'll take three?"

Aaron WAN BISSAKA (25, 2024) OGDEN: "He's not my ideal right-back, but he buckled down and did very well last season and you've got to reward that."

MARCOTTI: "I'd defer to Ten Hag on this one. On paper, he's not a Ten Hag full-back at all. Sure, he worked hard, but he is what he is. I certainly wouldn't extend him in the summer. You can always trigger the one-year extension if you're scared that suddenly Real Madrid will come in for him or whatever."

Transfer Man United

The summer transfer window is now open in Europe, and there's plenty of gossip swirling around. Transfer Talk brings you all the latest buzz on rumours, comings, goings and, of course, done deals!

Manchester United are readying a bid for Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund, reports the Telegraph. The 20-year-old from Denmark is now a priority for the Red Devils this transfer window and is preferred to Eintracht Frankfurt frontman Randal Kolo Muani.

The club is also operating under a strict budget due to financial fair play considerations and will look to sign the striker for a transfer fee of around £50m.

Hojlund had a breakout season in Serie A, scoring nine goals and providing two assists in 32 appearances for La Dea. He has also scored six goals in six games for his national side after making his senior debut in September.

It has been reported that United might face delays in completing the transfer due to increasing uncertainty surrounding a potential takeover of the club.

The Premier League side has already secured the £60m signing of Mason Mount from rivals Chelsea, and United are now looking to finalise deals for Erik ten Hag's remaining two key positional targets, specifically a goalkeeper and a striker. United are exploring the possibility of offloading players such as Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho, Fred, Scott McTominay, Anthony Martial, Alex Telles, Anthony Elanga and Eric Bailly in order to raise the financial resources necessary to pursue their desired transfer targets this summer.

Chelsea are refusing to meet Brighton & Hove Albion's demands of a £100m transfer fee in order to sign midfielder Moises Caicedo, the Guardian reports. The 21-year-old Ecuador international is a top priority for the Blues as new manager Mauricio Pochettino looks to reinforce the midfield, and they are hoping to get their man for a fee of around £80m. However, the Seagulls see Declan Rice's anticipated £105m move from West Ham United to Arsenal as a benchmark.

Free agent Willian could be set for another season at Fulham after receiving an improved contract offer, according to the Athletic. The Cottagers' first offer to the 34-year-old winger mirrored the terms of his contract from last season, which included wages exceeding £50,000 per week, and was subsequently rejected. They have now presented a £100,000-a-week contract to the former Brazil international, as Marco Silva is prioritising efforts to retain him this transfer window.

Southampton are confident of securing a £50m transfer fee for midfielder Romeo Lavia amid interest from Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool, Sky Sports reports. The 19-year-old Belgium international looks set to depart St. Mary's just 12 months after joining from Manchester City, and if he does, City will receive 20% of any fee.

Internazionale are lining up Shakhtar Donetsk goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin as a potential replacement for Andre Onana, according to Fabrizio Romano. The 21-year-old Ukraine international has one year remaining on his contract and is one of the Nerazzurri's top choices should Onana leave the San Siro for Manchester United this summer.

Athletico Paranaense have given Barcelona an ultimatum in their quest to sign striker Vitor Roque, Mundo Deportivo reports. The Brazilian club has told Barca that they have 24 hours to send signed contracts and finalise the deal for the 18-year-old once-capped Brazil international. If the cash-strapped Catalan club fails to do so, it could open the door to interested sides like Man United, Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur to sign one of the most gifted teenagers in world football.

With Mason Mount's arrival from Chelsea confirmed, Manchester United's focus turned to filling the other two major gaps in the squad.

Mount was announced as a Red on Wednesday, penning a five-year deal after a fee potentially rising to £60million was agreed with Chelsea. The 24-year-old will join up with his new teammates for testing this week and could feature in next week's friendly against Leeds United in Oslo.

A new goalkeeper remains high on Ten Hag's summer wish list, with the future of David de Gea uncertain after his contract expired last weekend. Andre Onana is the Dutchman's prime target, and United have returned with a second bid worth a reported £43m after seeing their opening offer knocked back by Inter Milan last week.

Further forward, Ten Hag looks to have set sights on Rasmus Hojlund after moving on from the likes of Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen. Reports suggest United will go up to £50m for the 20-year-old, with hope that they can find middle ground with Atalanta.

Elsewhere, many of United's current crop returned to Carrington for the first day of full training on Thursday including Amad, who will hope to use the next couple of months to impress Ten Hag and break into the first-team.

United are 'increasingly confident' of signing Andre Onana this summer after submitting a £43m bid for the goalkeeper, according tothe Times.

Talks have been ongoing for weeks between United and Inter, with the two sides coming closer together in their valuations.

Inter still value the 27-year-old at €60m (£51.3m) but the report suggests there is growing optimism that an agreement can be found.

United will make an offer for Rasmus Hojlund after wrapping up a deal for Mason Mount, according to the Telegraph.

Ten Hag is said to have made Hojlund his top target to fill the No.9 void after moving away from the likes of Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen.

The Dutchman will hope to land a double-swoop of Serie A talent, with a second bid for Andre Onana reportedly tabled earlier today.

Remaking Chelsea

After a spend approaching $750 million over the previous two transfer windows, Chelsea's priorities in this transfer window were pretty clear. In order to remain compliant with financial sustainability rules -- those of both the Premier League and UEFA (when they next qualify for European football) -- they needed to cut the wage bill and generate funds from sales. And they needed to reduce a bloated squad that, including loans, had ballooned to around 40 players (a figure higher than they needed, given the lack of European football this season).

All this while giving Mauricio Pochettino a squad competitive enough to get them back into Europe -- ideally the Champions League, but at a minimum the Europa League. They got to work straight away and Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, the co-sporting directors, have been aggressive and efficient in that regard. They have made two signings thus far -- Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson -- and we expect them to bring in two to three more players: another forward and one or two central midfielders. But that may take some time as it will depend on which players they can move out.

Goalkeepers Edouard Mendy (31 years old, contract expired in 2025) -- transferred to Al Ahli for €18.5 million MARCOTTI: They had to make a choice between Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga and they opted to shift the former. It's not a big fee for a guy who led them to a Champions League crown three years ago, but then again, he lost his starting spot last season. With his deal expiring in 2025, his valuation was only going to fall.

Kepa Arrizabalaga (28, 2025) OGDEN: He's on big wages and hasn't exactly pulled up trees, so there's no need to extend. Maybe he'll blossom under Pochettino and then you can assess what you want to do. But for now, I'd ride out.

Gabriel Slonina (19, 2028) MARCOTTI: He was on loan in Major League Soccer last season and started for the United States at the Under-20 World Cup. I don't see the point in keeping him as a third keeper; he needs to play. So find some place for him to go on loan. You've still got Bettinelli as a backup.

Marcus Bettinelli, 31, 2026 OGDEN: There's a lighter workload with no European football and he can probably do a job as a No. 2. Though if Kepa gets injured, Chelsea may want to move for a keeper in January.

Kalidou Koulibaly (32, 2026) -- transferred to Al Hilal for €23m MARCOTTI: They ended up selling him for almost half the €40m they paid to sign him a year ago, but needs must. He didn't have a great season, he's now 32, he was on a huge wage and it's not like they were going to get much more for him.

Trevoh Chalobah (23, 2028) OGDEN: They have a ton of central defenders and it was going to come down to him or Koulibaly for depth. It makes sense to keep him; he's younger and cheaper and showed he can do a job in that role.

Thiago Silva (38, 2024) MARCOTTI: I don't know how much he's going to play at his age, but I guess they value his leadership and it's only a one-year extension they gave him.

Marc Cucurella (24, 2028) OGDEN: Unless Pochettino decides he loves him, he's probably their fifth option at centre-back and their third option, after Ben Chilwell and Lewis Hall, at left-back, so he's the sort of player you want to move on. Problem is, with the sort of season he had last year, that's difficult to do. They paid a lot of money for him and he's on significant wages. So sell if you can, but you may need to keep him.

Ben Chilwell (26, 2027)

Levi Colwill (20, 2025) MARCOTTI: I think he's a phenomenal talent. He was on loan at Brighton last year and they, no doubt, want to keep him, but I think you have to extend his contract and resist the urge to let him go as part of a package for Moises Caicedo or whomever. If the Caicedo fee is too high, maybe you can include Cucurella in some form or let them have Colwill on loan for another season, but only after he extends with Chelsea. Simply keeping him around makes little sense to me; he needs to play.

Reece James (23, 2028)

Malang Sarr (24, 2025) MARCOTTI: He didn't play much at Monaco last year, making just eight league starts, but he'll likely play even less if he stays. I don't know what Chelsea can get for him because he's had little impact over the past three years for three different clubs, so you may need to simply loan him out. If not, take whatever is offered.

Baba Rahman (28, 2024) -- released OGDEN: It's remarkable to think he joined Chelsea eight years ago and spent the past seven seasons on loan. They may have taken a hit in terminating his contract, but it was worth it."\

Ethan Ampadu (22, 2024) OGDEN: He's not going to play and his contract is winding down. Move him on.

MARCOTTI: He was a highly touted youngster and, at 22, he already has 44 caps for Wales. Maybe he'll never live up to the hype, but he showed in loan spells at Sheffield United and then in Serie A the past two years that he can contribute. Yes, you can sell him now and get something -- not much -- for him, but I think it makes more sense to extend his contract by a year or two and either loan him out or maybe keep him around for his versatility. He can also play in defensive midfielder, and that's a role where Chelsea have a big hole right now, so he may be useful as a squad player.

Ian Maatsen (21, 2024) MARCOTTI: I think you need to think of him and Lewis Hall jointly. You can carry one of the two as a back up to Chilwell. Whichever one you keep, you'll need to extend. He had a great year on loan at Burnley, starting almost every game, helping them to promotion and being named in the team of the season. Chelsea seem intent on selling him and Burnley have had a £15m bid knocked back. If you can get the right price I guess you sell, but he looks a special player and if Pochettino is on board with it, I'd look to extend his contract and have him back up Chilwell.

Lewis Hall (18, 2025) OGDEN: I like Hall. I think he has talent and the ability to become the first-choice left back. I'd extend his deal and keep him at the club, giving him the chance to dislodge Chilwell. He could be Pochettino's project: a homegrown kid with the opportunity to become a club stalwart.

Cesar Azpilicueta (33, 2024) -- released, joined Atletico Madrid MARCOTTI: He's been a great servant for the club, but I think they made the right decision to write off the last year of his contract and let him move to Atletico. It cuts the wage bill and opens the door for younger players.

Malo Gusto (20, 2030) MARCOTTI: He's had two years as a regular at Lyon, so you feel he's ready to back up Reece James down the right flank. Only question here is playing time if James stays injury-free, but you can possibly look at that later. For now it makes sense to let Pochettino assess him close up.

Midfielders Cesare Casadei (21 years old, contract expires in 2028) OGDEN: He had a good year in the Championship and was top scorer at the Under-20 World Cup. Now he needs to kick on, so I'd look to loan him to a top-division club, ideally playing in Europe.

Faustino Anjorin (21, 2028) MARCOTTI: He's a very gifted player, but he's had major injury problems and hasn't played since September when he was on loan at Huddersfield. I think all you can do is try to get him fit again and then see if you can loan him.

Andrey Santos (20, 2030) MARCOTTI: Now that he has his work permit, I think this one depends on how many defensive midfielders Pochettino thinks he needs and how many he can get. Ideally, a loan somewhere in Europe might make more sense to smooth the transition from Brazil. But if they're short in the middle of the park, they may not have that option.

Tiemoue Bakayoko (28, 2024) -- released OGDEN: Another one where they decided to cut their losses. It's incredible to think they paid €45m for him six years ago, but he hasn't been able to make it work in any of his loan spells.

Enzo Fernandez (22, 2031) Verdict: Keep

N'Golo Kante (32, 2023) -- signed for Al Ittihad on free transfer MARCOTTI: He was a great player and a popular and likeable one too, but the combination of age, wages and injuries meant it made little sense to give him a new deal. They had to let him go.

Mateo Kovacic (29, 2024) Signed for Manchester City for £25m MARCOTTI: Selling him fits the broader plan of what they want to do: get younger and lower the wage bill. With a year left on his contract, they had little leverage in terms of fee. Maybe they could have got a little more, but I'm OK with £25 million.

Conor Gallagher (23, 2025) OGDEN: I don't think he's Chelsea-level, so I wouldn't extend him. Ideally, I'd look to sell, but they're simply short on bodies in the middle of the park. Plus, I think you need some guys with Premier League experience.

Verdict: Keep but do not extend

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (27, 2024) -- transferred to AC Milan for €16m MARCOTTI: Another massive prospect as a teenager, it's wild to think that he's 27 and never started more than 21 league games in a season (and that was while on loan at Crystal Palace and Fulham). He has an unusual skill set and showed glimpses, but it was time to move on. With a year left and big wages, you weren't going to get much more than what they got.

Carney Chukwuemeka (19, 2028) OGDEN: I think you let Pochettino make the call here. He's still so young and has started only four top flight games. If Pochettino thinks there's room for him to get some playing time and grow then you keep him. If not, send him out on loan where he can play. That will depend on who they bring in.

Mason Mount (24, 2024) -- joined Manchester United for £60m OGDEN: The relationship with the club fell apart, and once it became obvious he wasn't going to extend, they had to sell. I think that's a very good fee for Chelsea.

Mykhailo Mudryk (23, 2031) MARCOTTI: He struggled in his first six months but you made a long-term commitment to him, so you need to give him another shot and hope that he can settle.

Raheem Sterling (28, 2027) OGDEN: I'd look to move him on if you can find someone who will take him, maybe in England or overseas, even on loan. Even with all the attacking players who are leaving, you've added Nico Jackson and Christopher Nkunku and you'll want to give them playing time. You also still have Mudryk, Noni Madueke, Broja coming back from injury, plus whatever new striker we think they're going to sign and no European football.

Christian Pulisic (24, 2024) MARCOTTI: He's on big wages and he's a year away from free agency. It would be silly to keep him and lose him for nothing when he wants a move, you can get a fee for him and you're not going to give him a new deal. With AC Milan submitting a new bid worth over €20m for the forward, a deal could be on the horizon for the forward.

Hakim Ziyech (30, 2025) OGDEN: They had a deal to sell him to Al Nassr lined up, but he failed his medical. It might be tough to sell him, but maybe they can loan him somewhere.

Philadelphia shooting

A 40-year-old suspect is in custody after a shooting in southwestern Philadelphia left four people dead and two others injured Monday evening, police said.

The latest: Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said at a news conference late Monday the suspect was armed with a semiautomatic rifle and that the two wounded victims were boys, ages 2 and 13.

The big picture: The shooting happened about 8:30pm in the Kingsessing neighborhood of Philadelphia. Police initially said eight people were shot.

Outlaw said police pursued the suspect on foot while he was shooting and when he surrendered in an alley he was "wearing a bulletproof vest with multiple magazines in the vest." He had a handgun in addition to the "AR-style rifle" and a police scanner, per Outlaw. Another person whom Outlaw said picked up a firearm and returned fire was also taken into custody. All of the victims were male and three of those killed were 20, 22 and 59 years old, Outlaw said. The age of the fourth person killed was not immediately confirmed but he was believed to be aged between 16 and 21, according to Outlaw. What we're watching: Police were still trying to determine a motive for the shooting.

What they're saying: "Horrified by the reports of a shooting in Southwest Philadelphia," Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney tweeted.

"My heart is with the loved ones and families of everyone involved, and I send my prayers to the victims," he added. "This devastating violence must stop." The big picture: At least 339 mass shootings have occurred in the U.S. so far this year, per the Gun Violence Archive. It defines a mass shooting as a situation in which at least four people are shot and either injured or killed, not including the shooter.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A gunman wearing a bulletproof vest opened fire on the streets of Philadelphia on Monday night, killing four people and wounding two boys in the latest outbreak of gun violence in the United States, police said. The victims were apparently random, with no connection immediately known between them and the shooter.

The shootings took place over several city blocks in the southwestern neighborhood of Kingsessing. Responding officers chased the suspect as he continued to fire, and he was arrested in an alley after surrendering, Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said at a news conference.

"At this point all we know is that this person decided to leave their home and target individuals,” Outlaw said.

He had a bulletproof vest, an “AR-type rifle,” multiple magazines, a handgun and a police scanner, she said.

Officers were flagged down at about 8:30 p.m., and multiple calls of shots fired came in from Kingsessing. Police found some gunshot victims, and as they were attending to them, they heard more gunfire, Outlaw said.

The suspected shooter was identified as a 40-year-old man. A second person was also taken into custody who may have returned fire at the suspect, but police did not know whether there was a connection between the two people, Outlaw said.

The chief described the scene as covering an area of two by four blocks and said dozens of shell casings were found.

“You can see there are several scenes out here,” Outlaw said. “We’re canvassing the area to get as much as we can, to identify witnesses, to identify where cameras are located and to do everything to figure out the why,” Outlaw said.

Three of the dead ranged in age from 20 to 59, while the fourth, who had not yet been identified, was estimated to be between 16 and 21. All were male. The two hospitalized victims are boys, ages 2 and 13. They were in stable condition, Outlaw said.

The shooting occurred a day after gunfire erupted at a holiday weekend block party in Baltimore, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) to the southwest, killing two people and wounding 28 others. The wounded in that shooting ranged in age from 13 to 32, with more than half of them minors, according to officials.

The Philadelphia violence marks the country’s 29th mass killing in 2023, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University.

So far this year, the nation has witnessed the highest number on record of mass killings and deaths to this point in a single year.

There have been more than 550 mass killings since 2006, according to the database, in which at least 2,900 people have died and at least 2,000 people have been injured.

TOP STORY: Barcelona pick Romeu as Busquets replacement Barcelona want Girona defensive midfielder Oriol Romeu to replace Sergio Busquets, as has been reported by Diario Sport.

After coming through La Masia, Busquets became an ever-present figure in the Blaugrana's midfield but is now heading to MLS side Inter Miami, leaving a void to fill in the midfield. Now, it seems that Barcelona have now turned to another La Masia graduate, giving Romeu the opportunity to return after leaving to join Chelsea in 2011.

This comes just one season after 31-year-old Romeu moved from Southampton to Girona, and he has impressed by making 33 appearances and even chipping in with two goals.

After making the move back to his homeland in Spain, Romeu had paid close attention to his physicality and specifically maintaining his own levels after competing in the Premier League. It is that very trait that has attracted the attention of Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez, who now sees Romeu potentially playing a role in his midfield.

Despite the interest from both sides, a deal is not expected to be immediate as there are issues to be resolved if a move is to materialise.

Fortunately for Barcelona, Romeu is reportedly in no hurry and is willing to wait the days or weeks that it will take as he wants a return to Barcelona.

Next week, Chelsea will continue talks with Brighton & Hove Albion regarding their potential move for Moises Caicedo, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Blues are hoping to find a solution soon as the 21-year-old midfielder wants to move to Stamford Bridge, meaning that personal terms are not expected to be an issue.

AC Milan are set to officially make a move to sign Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze in the next 24 to 48 hours, according to Calciomercato, who add that the 24-year-old will not be pushing for a move but would be happy for a transfer to happen. Milan will make an offer of €20m plus bonuses, although Villarreal aren't under financial pressures after Pau Torres' €30m move to Aston Villa.

Napoli, Juventus and Internazionale are among the Serie A giants actively trying to sign Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners, reports Foot Mercato, who add that the Bergamo club want at least €35m for the 25-year-old. There is also competition from the Premier League, with Brighton & Hove Albion and Aston Villa both keen on the Dutchman, while Liverpool are monitoring the situation.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have turned down Napoli's offer of €35m for centre-back Max Kilman, reports The Athletic, with the Serie A giants looking to replace Kim Min-Jae, who has been heavily linked with Bayern Munich. Wolves will not accept anything under €40m and are not being put under pressure by Kilman, who is happy to stay put and has a contract that runs until 2026 and includes the option for a further year.

Tottenham Hotspur have reached a verbal agreement with Manor Solomon and have medical tests scheduled, reports Fabrizio Romano, who states that the forward will join as a free agent if all goes to plan with Shakhtar Donetsk and FIFA rules. Romano also adds that Solomon will sign a five-year contract, having spent last season on loan at Fulham.

Once again, in spite of a global financial crisis, the men's soccer clubs around Europe spent an incredible amount of money to sign players in January, and this summer may not be any different.

Indeed, clubs spent a record $1.57 billion (£1.27bn) on transfers in the January transfer window, according to FIFA, with the Premier League doing most of the heavy lifting themselves at 57.3% of the total. But with two giants of the game in Cristiano Ronaldo (Al Nassr) and Lionel Messi (Inter Miami) now taking their careers outside of Europe, who will step up?

Already there have been some big deals agreed to ahead of the various transfer windows opening. Here are grades for all the major summer transfers in the men's game, with each listed in order of highest fee.

When the MLS secondary window opens on July 5, Messi will be an Inter Miami player. It seems incredible, but the 35-year-old GOAT made it clear why he didn't want to return to Barcelona or head to Saudi Arabia after leaving PSG this summer. America is a new challenge and one he will relish. It was a complex deal to pull off, but David Beckham-owned Miami did it with a little help!

Not content with just signing Messi, the MLS side also bagged his former Barcelona teammate Busquets, 34. He negotiated with Saudi sides Al Nassr and Al Hilal but had always wanted to play in the United States. A rare breed of midfielder, Miami won't see the best of him at his age, but he should still show his class.

Leipzig continue to own the transfer market as they signed Szoboszlai for €20m in 2020 and have made a huge profit. They will miss him, but you get the feeling that they have another youngster ready to step in.

Liverpool paid the Hungary captain's release clause and it is a lot of money. But he's capable of playing in a number of positions across the forward line, is 22 years old, and is a set-piece specialist. If he can steer clear of injury then he will improve the side a lot.

OK, Dortmund signed him for €30m and have made a huge profit in three years as he has become one of the best midfielders around. But the fee still seems on the small side for a 19-year-old with such potential. A 30% add-on clause makes the total outlay only €134m, which puts him fifth in the all-time list. Dortmund surely could have got at least a baseline fee of around €120m, with add-ons up to €150m.

A wonderful deal for Madrid, who beat out Man City, Liverpool and every other top club in Europe. Their midfield is set up for the next decade, and they've landed a generational talent who will surely become a world star in LaLiga.

Leipzig did what they do best: sign a player for a cheap fee and move them on for a huge profit. Nkunku reportedly had a release clause in his contract, so that's the fee Leipzig got. But they signed him for a mere €13m from PSG in 2019 and turned him into a superstar.

Nkunku is not the No. 9 striker that Chelsea sorely need, but he is a fine operator up front who can fill a number of positions. His 23 goals in 36 games last season show he can hit the back of the net and he's a more than capable replacement for Kai Havertz if he departs for Arsenal. Though this deal was agreed on as early as last September.

Rice's hunt was led by Arsenal who stole the start for this transfer.

Mikel Arteta's team has submitted an offer of 90 million euros (around Rp. 1.71 trillion).

The offer was still rejected by West Ham United because Rice's transfer price was only £ 75 million (around IDR 1.43 trillion).

Roberto Firmino is closing in on a move to Al Ahli, according to Fabrizio Romano. The 31-year-old is set to become a free agent when his contract expires with Liverpool this week, departing Anfield after eight years and 111 goals in 362 appearances. Leicester City are pushing hard for a deal for Conor Coady, according to the Mirror. Rabiot, 28, has been locked in talks for weeks over a new deal as his current terms expire at the end of the month. The France international made 32 Serie A appearances last season, scoring eight goals, and has spoken in the past about his desire to play in the Premier League.

United have been chasing a £55 million deal for Chelsea's Mason Mount, but sources have told ESPN the club are considering other options including Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo, Ajax's Mohammed Kudus and Taylor Booth at FC Utrecht.

"Liverpool want him," Dorgu's agent told Bold.dk. "Liverpool have been watching him and interested in him for some time, but if he goes there he will have to play in the U23 team. It's not the best for him, so I advise him not to do it. They can offer him a lot of money, but that's not what we're looking for right now. We focus on his career, development and playing time.

"Liverpool is of course not the only club that wants him. There are many clubs here in England who are keeping an eye on him. Manchester City kept an eye on him when he played against England for the U19 national team in Hobro in Denmark.

"Lecce's scout has also told me that Barcelona is also keeping an eye on Patrick, because he is a huge talent."

13.55 BST: Borussia Dortmund are considering a deal to re-sign Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho, according to Sport Bild.

Sancho, 23, left Dortmund to join United for €85m in 2021. However, the England international has struggled to assert himself, with 12 goals and six assists from 79 games, and injury has played a part too.

Dortmund are considering a bid of €50m to bring Sancho back to the Bundesliga but have other priorities, namely a central midfielder to replace Jude Bellingham after he left to join Real Madrid for €103m.

Koulibaly Al Hilal

Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly has joined Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal from Premier League side Chelsea, the two clubs announced on Sunday.

"We'll continue to make history together," Al Hilal said on Twitter, alongside a short video featuring Koulibaly.

The four-time Asian Champions League winners said Koulibaly's contract would run until 2026 without giving any financial details. British media reported that the Saudi club would pay around £17 million ($21.61m) for the centre-back.

"I'm here with those who make the glory in the present and the future," the Africa Cup of Nations winner said.

Koulibaly, 32, scored two goals in 32 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea after joining them from Napoli last July.

He is the second player moving to Al Hilal from the Premier League after Portugal midfielder Ruben Neves signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday.

The Saudi Pro League has become attractive to Europe-based players since Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Al Nassr in January.

League champions Al Ittihad signed Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema earlier this month, while the club has also confirmed that former Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante is joining them.

Al Hilal are the most decorated club in Saudi Arabia and Asia, having won 66 trophies, and they hold the record for league and Asian Champions titles with 18 and four, respectively.

Boosting their squad is a priority for the Riyadh-based club; they have lost their league and Asian Champions crowns.

Spanish media report that they are also keen to secure the services of Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva.

Kalidou Koulibaly has become the latest Chelsea player to move to Saudi Arabia after the defender completed a transfer to Al-Hilal for an undisclosed fee.

The centre-back, 32, joins Ruben Neves at the Saudi Pro League side following the Wolves midfielder's £47m switch.

Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante has also agreed to sign for Saudi champions Al-Ittihad, while team-mate Edouard Mendy is close to joining Al-Ahli.

Koulibaly signed for Chelsea from Napoli last July on a four-year deal.

He arrived at Stamford Bridge with European and international experience, after helping Napoli win the Italian Cup in 2020 and Senegal claim the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022.

But he played just 32 games for the club in all competitions, scoring two goals in 23 Premier League appearances.

"From my first game to my last, it was an honour to wear this badge," Koulibaly said on Twitter.

"Last season wasn't the one we wanted, but I want to thank the fans and everyone at the club for your support."

Chelsea did not disclose how much Al-Hilal have paid for Koulibaly - but reports suggest it could be as much as £20m.

Koulibaly's arrival in Saudi Arabia follows a recent trend from European clubs that started with Cristiano Ronaldo's switch from Manchester United to Al-Nassr in January.

Karim Benzema followed from Real Madrid to Al-Ittihad at the end of the season, while Arsenal's Thomas Partey and Manchester City's Bernardo Silva have been heavily linked with a move in recent weeks.

The trend underlines the league's ambition to be one of the top five in the world and follows a decision in June by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), which owns Newcastle United, to take over four leading clubs in the country.

There is uncertainty over whether PIF holds a stake in Chelsea's ultimate owners, the private equity firm Clearlake Capital, although club sources have rejected suggestions of any direct involvement.

Despite this, the club could well see four of its players join the Saudi Pro League by the end of the summer, with Morocco winger Hakim Ziyech also linked with a move.

These departures are part of a wider process going on behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge as new manager Mauricio Pochettino reshapes his squad.

Germany forward Kai Havertz is due to join Arsenal in a £65m deal and Manchester City have had a £30m bid accepted for Croatia midfielder Mateo Kovacic.

The Chelsea rebuild has also seen the arrival of France forward Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig, while Villarreal's Senegal striker Nicolas Jackson reportedly had a medical in London this weekend before a move.

Mbappe to Madrid

While the English Premier League started on June 14 (read our preview here), the transfer window opens on July 1 across the rest of Europe and clubs have been planning their business after a long season interrupted by the 2022 World Cup in November and December.

ESPN writers have everything you need to know about the top teams' hopes and delve into deals that might be in the cards. Who will come in? Who will depart?

Budget? Barca start with a budget of zero and will only be able to spend 40% of any savings they make through reducing the wage bill or raising in transfer fees. LaLiga's updated financial fair play regulations mean there can be no palancas -- selling off more club assets to generate spending room -- pulled this summer.

What does the team need? Xavi Hernandez's team are coming off the back of a first league title since 2019 but the coach has been clear improvements are needed if they are to compete in the Champions League. A replacement for midfielder Sergio Busquets has been deemed essential by Xavi, who also wants to add creativity in midfield. A right-back, an understudy to Robert Lewandowski up front and, depending on outgoings, a left winger are all on Barca's wishlist, too.

Who are the major targets? Both Xavi's preferred options to replace Busquets -- Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi and Bayern Munich's Joshua Kimmich -- appear unattainable within Barca's budget. Other alternatives do not convince everyone at the club, with president Joan Laporta and sporting directors Mateu Alemany and Deco also involved in the recruitment process.

Ilkay Gundogan will join once his Manchester City contract expires this month and should add goals from midfield, with Villarreal's Alex Baena also being tracked, among others.

At €40m, Brazilian youngster Vitor Roque is the player lined up to play backup -- and eventually replace -- Lewandowski, while Barca also have an option of between €15m-€20m to sign Atletico Madrid winger Yannick Carrasco.

There are countless other players being considered, but it all depends on how much money Barca can generate. At right-back, Man City's Joao Cancelo, Real Valladolid's Ivan Fresneda and Villarreal's Juan Foyth are all liked. Athletic Club centre-back Inigo Martinez will also sign as a free agent.

Who could be leaving? Veterans Busquets and Jordi Alba will both leave the club at the end of the month. Clement Lenglet, Samuel Umtiti, Sergino Dest, Abde Ezzalzouli and Nico Gonzalez, all players returning from loan, will also be allowed to leave if offers arrive. From there, it gets more complicated, but Barca are encouraging offers for Franck Kessie, Ferran Torres and even Ansu Fati, although none of them want to leave. Eric Garcia is in a similar position.

Any new contracts? Left-back Alejandro Balde, 19, who was the revelation of the past season, will be handed a new deal once Barca can guarantee the terms can be registered with LaLiga. Winger Ousmane Dembele is also in talks over a new contract. His deal expires in 2024. Beyond the first-team, Barca are desperate to get 15-year-old forward Lamine Yamal, who made his senior debut in April, to sign his first professional contract.

Budget? Atletico's spending will be limited, and they will first focus on moving on several high-earning senior players before looking at making any further signings.

What does the team need? A central defender, especially given that coach Diego Simeone often favours playing three at the back. There would also be room for an extra central midfielder and a full-back, depending on those departures.

Who are the major targets? A deal has already been agreed with Leicester City centre-back Caglar Soyuncu, who arrives on a free transfer, as well as young Uruguayan defender Santiago Mourino, who will be assessed in preseason to determine if he's ready for the first team. As for that midfielder, names linked in recent days include Spurs' Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Fiorentina's Sofyan Amrabat.

Who could be leaving? A new home must be found for wantaway Joao Felix, after his inconsistent loan spell at Chelsea. Winger Yannick Carrasco is waiting to see if Barcelona choose to exercise their option of between €15m-€20m to sign him, agreed as part of the Memphis Depay deal. Atletico would like to move on midfield trio Saul Niguez, Thomas Lemar and Geoffrey Kondogbia -- although the first two may be difficult to shift, given their high salaries and slump in value -- while full-back Renan Lodi could leave after his loan at Nottingham Forest. Forward Alvaro Morata is another player who has reportedly turned down an approach from Saudi Arabia to sign a new deal.

Any new contracts? An agreement to extend Morata's deal until 2026 -- on a reduced wage -- is close to being made official. Otherwise, senior players Koke, Stefan Savic and Mario Hermoso all have contracts which expire in 2024, and extensions will need to be sorted. There will be no issues with captain Koke or Savic, while Hermoso went from being transferable to essential as his form improved in the second half of last season.

Budget? Madrid have already spent big this summer, splashing out €103m plus €30m in variables to sign England midfielder Jude Bellingham, but there's more money available for the right player. Last year's accounts showed a cash balance of €425m.

What does the team need? A world-class centre-forward. Karim Benzema has gone, and while Spain international Joselu -- who has arrived on loan from Espanyol -- is an excellent plan B, he's not a Benzema-level replacement. Madrid's No. 9 shirt has been left vacant for a reason.

Who are the major targets? Kylian Mbappe, if Paris Saint-Germain are willing to let him go for €150m this summer and the 24-year-old is happy to leave a year early. Otherwise, a number of forward options have been looked at -- notably Tottenham's Harry Kane -- but all of them have drawbacks, Kane's being his age (29) and €100m-plus transfer fee. The signings of Bellingham, Joselu, winger Brahim Diaz and left-back Fran Garcia have already been confirmed.

Who could be leaving? Benzema, Marco Asensio, Eden Hazard and Mariano Diaz have left already. Alvaro Odriozola, Jesus Vallejo and Andriy Lunin would be allowed to leave if the right destination can be found.

Any new contracts? Defender -- and now club captain -- Nacho Fernandez and veteran midfielder Toni Kroos have already signed one-year contract extensions until June 2024, while midfielder Dani Ceballos has agreed a four-year extension. Luka Modric has said that he wants to stay, but there's been no official confirmation of a deal yet, and he's also received interest from Saudi Arabia.

Budget? The group of decision-makers around new chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen are willing to spend €150m, plus any income from player exits.

What does the team need? Bayern need reinforcements at the back, a holding midfielder and at least one striker. But it is likely that the club address almost every area of the squad. Two centre-backs and a right-back are needed, as Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez are expected to depart and Cancelo's loan spell from Man City will not lead to a €70m permanent transfer.

Manager Thomas Tuchel has also made clear that he wants a defensive midfielder who can play the No. 6 role instead of Joshua Kimmich. The interest in West Ham's Declan Rice has underlined Tuchel's intention, as the manager personally spoke to the England international before Bayern decided against engaging in a €100m-plus bidding war with Arsenal.

The Bundesliga champions are also adamant about signing a No. 9 striker, as Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is the only current squad member who can serve that role effectively.

Who are the major targets? Bayern have targeted Villarreal's Pau Torres and Napoli's Kim Min-Jae as potential additions to the back four, while the club have already started talks with Man City right-back Kyle Walker, as his contract runs out in 2024.

Brighton's Moises Caicedo and Fiorentina's Amrabat have been the major targets for the holding midfield role, though both may end up at other clubs. Bayern have already signed midfielder Konrad Laimer from RB Leipzig and are also close to signing left-back Raphaël Guerreiro whose contract with Borussia Dortmund expires this summer.

The major targets for the striker department are Eintracht Frankfurt's Randal Kolo Muani and Juventus' Dusan Vlahovic. Bayern might even try to sign both if enough income is generated through exits.

Who could be leaving? Pavard and Hernandez are both expected to go; the latter is likely to join Paris Saint-Germain, while the former has been linked to a host of top clubs.

Forward Sadio Mane might leave after only one year at the club, as Tuchel has not put his trust in the former Liverpool star. Also, 21-year-old midfielder Ryan Gravenberch is likely to depart after a disappointing year in which he voiced his disappointment about his limited playing time. Liverpool's scouting department have watched him closely.

Any new contracts? Other than two veterans, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and forward Thomas Muller, all key players possess contracts that run beyond the summer of 2024.

LaLiga fixtures

LaLiga's fixtures for the 2023-24 season (stream all games live on ESPN+) were released on Thursday and the new campaign is already bubbling with promise after some busy transfer market activity.

As Real Madrid look to reclaim the title from rivals Barcelona, they have spent €103 million to sign England midfielder Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund and might not be done yet, with a possible €120m-plus move for either Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe or Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane after star striker Karim Benzema left for Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile financially stricken Barca, who won the league for the first time since 2019 last season, are closing in on the free transfer signing of Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan as they attempt to build on that success while balancing their books.

Atletico Madrid, who were perhaps the best team in Spain in the second half of the campaign, led by the impressive Antoine Griezmann, will be hoping to break up the Barca-Madrid duopoly, as they have managed to do twice under Diego Simeone in the past decade.

Elsewhere, Real Sociedad, Sevilla, Villarreal, Real Betis and Athletic Club are among the teams who will start the season with hopes of finishing in the top four. At the other end of the spectrum, Granada, Las Palmas and Alaves have all returned to the top flight after brief spells in the second division.

With the fixtures now published and managers, players and supporters able to plot their path to glory -- or otherwise -- here are the talking points.

The new LaLiga season gets underway on Aug. 12, with Barca and Madrid both starting on the road. Barca face a difficult trip to Jose Bordalas' Getafe, where they have often struggled in the past, and coach Xavi Hernandez moaned about the length of the grass after drawing there last season.

Madrid also have a tough start, away at Athletic, while Atletico face newly promoted Granada at home. Sevilla vs. Valencia and Villarreal vs. Real Betis are both fixtures to keep an eye on in the opening weekend of the campaign, too.

Barca step slightly into the unknown this season as they move away from Spotify Camp Nou while renovation work is carried out on the stadium. In the meantime, for around 15 months, they will play at the Olympic Stadium in the Montjuic area of the city, which sees their stadium capacity slashed from 100,000 to 50,000. Xavi has said it will be difficult to get used to but is hopeful it won't affect the rebuild he is carrying out at the club.

First up in Montjuic will be Cadiz in the second week of the season (Aug. 20), but Barca face three of their first four games away from home. After Cadiz, they have challenging matches at Villarreal (Aug. 27) and Osasuna (Sept. 3), two teams that finished in the top seven last season, in the run-up to the September international break.

That tough run is followed by three home games out of four, with Real Betis, Celta Vigo and Sevilla all due to play, before an awkward-looking October. At a time when Champions League fixtures are coming thick and fast, Barca face Athletic (Oct. 22), Madrid (Oct. 29) and Real Sociedad (Nov. 5) in the league.

Like Barca, Madrid also start with run of away games as work continues on the redevelopment of the Santiago Bernabeu. After facing Athletic, they travel to Almeria (Aug. 20) and Celta (Aug. 27). However, unlike Barca, they will be back in their home stadium by September when they host Getafe (Sept. 3) in a Madrid derby.

If Madrid can get a positive result at Athletic's San Mames on the opening weekend, they should be in good shape come the first international break with those fixtures. Tougher tests await them after, though, with Real Sociedad and Atletico to come in back-to-back games in mid-September and consecutive away ties against Sevilla and Barca at the end of October.

Atletico's form in the second half of last season allowed them to make significant ground on Madrid in the table, although they eventually came up just short in their pursuit of their city rivals, finishing one point behind them in third -- with Barca 10 ahead of Madrid in the end. However, with 53 points from 24 games post-World Cup they had more than anyone else in LaLiga (Barca had 51), so Simeone will be hopeful of getting involved in next year's title race.

A home game against Granada is the perfect start to the campaign, although away matches against Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano follow. It's then Sevilla at home and Valencia away before the derby against Madrid. By that point, we should have a good idea about what sort of shape Simeone's side will be in.

Real Sociedad took fourth place last season and will have to manage Champions League football with domestic games this time around, but they could not have asked for a better start. Girona, Celta Vigo, Las Palmas and Granada are four winnable fixtures and there is no reason why they can't go into their game at Madrid (Sept. 17) with 10 or even 12 points. They have often started seasons very strongly under Imanol Alguacil.

Sevilla will be hoping they can continue their revival under Jose Luis Mendilibar, too. He took them from relegation candidates to Europa League winners -- and a spot in next season's Champions League as a result -- but expectations will be raised now. A trip to Atletico aside, they will be happy with their opening five games, which also include Valencia, Alaves, Girona and Las Palmas.

Villarreal, Betis and Athletic will be among the other clubs looking to finish in the top four. Athletic could take advantage of not having to compete in Europe on Thursdays, with Villarreal and Betis both in the Europa League.

Kante join Saudi

French World Cup winner N'Golo Kante has agreed to join Saudi Pro League champions Al Ittihad on a three-year contract when his Chelsea deal expires this summer, the club announced on Tuesday.

Kante, whose Chelsea deal officially expires June 30, will join Karim Benzema at the Jeddah-based club and becomes the latest big name to move to Saudi Arabia following Cristiano Ronaldo's transfer to Al Nassr in January.

French World Cup winner N'Golo Kante has agreed to join Saudi Pro League champions Al Ittihad on a three-year contract when his Chelsea deal expires this summer, the club announced on Tuesday.

Kante, whose Chelsea deal officially expires June 30, will join Karim Benzema at the Jeddah-based club and becomes the latest big name to move to Saudi Arabia following Cristiano Ronaldo's transfer to Al Nassr in January.

"Kante's addition to Al-Ittihad is considered one of the most high-profile and impactful signings in the club's history. It is part of the club's efforts to establish itself as a top choice for world-class players in the Saudi Professional League."

The 32-year-old's deal will see him paid around €86 million ($109.78 million) per year, according to reports.

February that Kante was close to signing a new contract with Chelsea, but no deal was finalised and the midfielder has now decided to end his seven-year stay at Stamford Bridge.

After playing a key role in Leicester City's shock Premier League title win in 2016, Kante moved to west London, where he became the first player since Eric Cantona in 1993 to win back-to-back English top-flight titles with two different teams.

Further success followed when lifting the FA Cup in 2018 and winning the Europa League the following year before landing the Champions League crown in 2021. But injuries limited him to just nine appearances in all competitions during a turbulent last season for Chelsea.

Despite spending more than £600m on new signings since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over the club last May, Chelsea finished a lowly 12th in the Premier League. Thomas Tuchel and replacement Graham Potter were both dismissed as managers during the campaign before the season ended with Frank Lampard in interim charge.

Following the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as manager last month, it is set to be another summer of upheaval at Chelsea with several players -- including Christian Pulisic, Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount -- looking likely to depart.

Hakim Ziyech, check. Édouard Mendy, check. And now, Kalidou Koulibaly, check.

Chelsea have agreed three transfers with three different teams in the Saudi Pro League in short order — obviously negotiated all at the same time, with the Saudi PIF backing all three of those clubs — with Koulibaly’s move to Al Hilal now also agreed, as per reports earlier today.

There’s not been much, if any noise around Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, so perhaps that one’s off the table.

Still, Chelsea are shedding some big contracts here, which is the real benefit to our bottom line from these moves. Koulibaly’s transfer fee is set to be around €20-25m, and that appears to be the highest of the three. Ziyech’s fee is just about half that, at most, while Mendy’s somewhere in between the two. All told, it sounds like we’ll be getting about €50m, which is decent enough.

That, combined with the expected £150m or so incoming from the transfers of Havertz, Mount, and Kovačić will make our books look a lot better. Now, about that better-looking football.

Ronaldo 200 caps

Cristiano Ronaldo has once again reached a big milestone as the veteran Portugal captain made the 200th cap of his long and distinguished senior international career.

Heading into the June international break, Ronaldo had accumulated 198 caps since his senior debut in 2003, meaning he had already played more times for his country than any other man.

But after featuring against both Bosnia-Herzegovina on Saturday and Iceland on Tuesday in Portugal's Euro 2024 qualifiers over the past week, he now has a double-century of caps to go with his scoring record in men's internationals (at 122 goals and counting.)

While few can doubt the grandeur of his achievements in the men's game, the 38-year-old forward is still way, way off matching the outright records in either of those categories. In fact, he'd have to play on for another decade or more and score at least another 70 goals if he wanted to claim them.

That is because while Ronaldo might comfortably preside over both records -- most international appearances and most international goals -- in the men's game, there are more than two-dozen female players who have won more senior international caps than him to date, as well as six footballers in the women's game who have scored more goals for their country.

Here's a look at just how much Ronaldo is left in the shade when it comes to the international caps record.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a stunning late goal as Portugal beat Iceland 1-0 on Tuesday to extend their perfect record in Euro 2024 qualifying Group J on an historic night for the forward who became the first player to make 200 international appearances.

Ronaldo already held the record for most international appearances when he surpassed Kuwait's Bader Al-Mutawa's, who held the record of 196 matches, during Portugal's Euro 2024 qualifier against Liechtenstein in March.

Portugal struggled to break the deadlock against Iceland but stepped up the pressure after Willum Thor Willumsson was sent off for a second yellow card after a rough tackle on substitute Goncalo Inacio in the 81st minute.

Ronaldo had to wait two minutes to celebrate the winner as the referee first ruled out his close-range strike in the 89th minute for offside, but the goal was given after the VAR replay showed he was fractionally onside.

It was Ronaldo's 123rd goal for Portugal, extending his record as the all-time leading international goalscorer.

The result left Portugal top with 12 points, two ahead of second-placed Slovakia, who won 1-0 away to Liechtenstein earlier on Tuesday.

Portugal started more aggressively but Iceland slowly took control and had two great chances to lead in the first half through defender Victor Palsson and full-back Hordur Magnusson.

But Portugal responded after the break and gradually got into the game, with Ronaldo's goal securing the points.

England Win Euro 2024

England's Bukayo Saka scored a hat trick in a 7-0 rout of North Macedonia as they tightened their grip atop Group C in Euro 2024 qualifying on Monday with a fourth consecutive victory.

Captain Harry Kane, with his 57th and 58th goals for his country, Marcus Rashford and Kalvin Phillips all scored at Old Trafford in a game the hosts dominated as predicted.

"This is a feeling I can't really put into words. There's nothing I can say to describe it. I'm just so happy," Saka said after the match.

Manager Gareth Southgate revealed that Saka's tremendous performance had come despite a nagging Achilles injury.

"He's had it for a few weeks," Southgate told a news conference. "It is an injury that just needs managing. When you've had one of the best nights of your life, it's a reminder that it's worth going through these things."

England look set for next year's finals after amassing a perfect 12 points having also beaten Ukraine, who are second on six points from three matches, Italy and Malta.

Saka's scoring heroics came in a flurry straddling half-time.

His first goal in the 38th minute was an angled shot into the top corner. His second just after the break came after he chested the ball down and struck a left-foot volley.

Saka completed his treble in the 51st after running onto a through ball from Kane and then was swamped by joyous teammates. Southgate then wrapped the grinning 21-year-old in a bear hug when he was substituted minutes later.

Saka, who left the pitch after the final whistle clutching the game ball, is the first Arsenal player to score a hat trick for England, and the youngest since Theo Walcott in 2008 against Croatia.

However, Joselu’s performances have earned him a move to Real Madrid this summer. Just a few minor details remain before he replaces Karim Benzema and Mariano Diaz at the Santiago Bernabeu. And with Real Madrid unlikely to sign another striker, he might be the first-choice centre-forward for Los Blancos next season.

As for his displays for Spain, Joselu has brought his form to the international stage. And he scored the match-winner as Spain eked out a narrow 2-1 win over Italy in the semi-finals. Another such display will help Spain win the UEFA Nations League for the first time. So an important game beckons the 33-year-old.

After finishing the season with three titles — the European Super Cup, the Club World Cup and the Copa del Rey — Real Madrid have already embarked on a summer of change.

Greece boat disaster

At least 78 people have died and more than 100 have been rescued after their fishing boat sank off southern Greece.

But survivors have suggested as many as 750 people may have been packed on to the boat, with reports of 100 children in the hold.

Greece says it is one of its biggest ever migrant tragedies, and has declared three days of mourning.

Authorities say their offers of aid were refused but they are facing claims of not doing enough to help.

The boat went down about 80 km (50 miles) south-west of Pylos after 02:04 on Wednesday morning local time, according to the Greek coastguard, which lowered an earlier confirmed death toll of 79 to 78.

The EU's border agency Frontex said it had spotted the boat early on Tuesday afternoon and immediately told Greek and Italian authorities. The coastguard said later that no-one on board was wearing life jackets.

In a timeline provided by the coastguard, it said that initial contact was made with the fishing boat at 14:00 (11:00 GMT) and no request for help had been made.

It said the Greek shipping ministry had made repeated contact with the boat and was told repeatedly it simply wanted to sail on to Italy. A Maltese-flagged ship provided food and water at around 18:00, and another boat provided water three hours after that, it added.

Then at around 01:40 on Wednesday someone on the boat is said to have notified the Greek coastguard that the vessel's engine had malfunctioned.

Shortly afterwards, the boat capsized, taking only ten to fifteen minutes to sink completely. A search and rescue operation was triggered but complicated by strong winds.

Alarm Phone, an emergency helpline for migrants in trouble at sea, complained that the coastguard was "aware of the ship being in distress for hours before any help was sent", adding that authorities "had been informed by different sources" that the boat was in trouble.

It added that people may have been scared to encounter Greek authorities because they were aware of the country's "horrible and systematic pushback practices".

Jérôme Tubiana of Médecins Sans Frontières told French radio that European and Greek authorities should both have intervened earlier. "It's really shocking to hear that Frontex flew over the boat and no-one intervened because the boat refused all offers of help… an overloaded boat is a boat in distress."

The boat is thought to have been going from Libya to Italy, with most of those on board believed to be men in their 20s.

They had been travelling for days, according to local media reports, which added that the boat had been approached by a Maltese cargo ship on Tuesday afternoon that supplied food and water.

Survivors spoke of as many as 500 to 750 people on board and regional health director Yiannis Karvelis warned of an unprecedented tragedy: "The number of the people on board was much higher than the capacity that should be allowed for this boat."

One survivor told a hospital doctor in Kalamata that he had seen 100 children in the hold.

Coastguard Cpt Nikolaos Alexiou told public TV that the boat had sunk in one of the deepest parts of the Mediterranean.

Madrid sign Mbappe

Real Madrid are ready to bid for Kylian Mbappe this summer rather than waiting to sign him as a free agent when his Paris Saint-Germain contract expires next season, sources have told ESPN.

Mbappe's future is uncertain once again after the France captain released a statement via AFP on Tuesday to confirm he would not exercise his option to extend his deal by another year, meaning his contract will be up in June 2024.

"The board has been informed since July 15, 2022 of my decision not to extend beyond 2024, and the letter sent was only meant to confirm what I already told them," Mbappe said.

Sources have told ESPN that PSG would be willing to listen to offers of around €150 million ($161.5 million) for Mbappe this summer to avoid losing him for free a year later.

Mbappe also dismissed the links to Madrid as "lies" in response to a report from Le Parisien.

"LIES…At the same time, the bigger it is, the more it passes," he posted on Twitter. "I've already said that I'm going to continue next season at PSG where I am very happy."

Mbappe said after PSG secured the Ligue 1 title that he wants to stay in Paris next season, but sources close to the club dressing room have told ESPN that he informed teammates he wasn't ruling out leaving this summer, either.

Sources have told ESPN that Madrid are the player's preferred destination if he were to leave PSG this summer. Sources added that Madrid president Florentino Perez has been in touch regularly with Mbappe's camp and both parties were in contact again recently.

Madrid are now on alert, sources said, as they look for a centre-forward to replace Karim Benzema, who joined Saudi Arabia's Al Ittihad last week.

ESPN reported last week that Madrid view Tottenham's Harry Kane as the best available option to act as Benzema's successor, but there are doubts within the club about paying a high transfer fee for a player who turns 30 next month.

Madrid's original plan this summer was to sign a backup for Benzema -- such as Espanyol's Joselu -- before pushing for Mbappe or Erling Haaland in 2024.

The LaLiga club have already brought in left-back Fran Garcia from Rayo Vallecano and playmaker Brahim Diaz -- returning from a three-year loan at AC Milan -- and agreed to a deal worth €103 million plus variables with Borussia Dortmund for midfielder Jude Bellingham.

Sources told ESPN that it's still too early to know what will happen with Mbappe, but Madrid are ready to move for him if PSG are willing to seriously consider a deal.

Madrid suspect that PSG would do whatever they can to see Mbappe join another club rather than Los Blancos, and any negotiations between the parties would not be easy.

Mbappe has been a long-term target for Madrid and Perez.

Mbappe was widely expected to move to Spain on a free transfer last summer -- after Madrid failed with several bids worth up to €200 million in 2021 -- before a U-turn saw him choose to renew with PSG until 2024 with the option of an additional year.

When does the summer transfer window open and close?

PSG's season has been a disappointment despite the club winning Ligue 1, after they were eliminated from the Champions League round-of-16 stage by Bayern Munich.

Mbappe finished sixth in the 2022 Ballon d'Or rankings, well behind winner Benzema.

PSG have also seen Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos confirm their departures, while the club's search for a coach to replace Christophe Galtier continues.
