So, here's the problem: the longer I work in gardening and landscaping, the more I care about the ecological impacts of native plants, and the less I care about aesthetics. Which is a problem, when most clients' primary concern is that their yard looks nice. Which, fair, I just don't care as much about it as they do and I feel like I could be making a bigger impact than I currently am.
So I'm thinking of quitting this job and going one of two entirely different directions, and for some reason it's rather hard to choose.
Option A is starting my own native plant nursery, which would focus on small (4 inch and gallon pot sized) native plants, with a focus on plants that are most important for native pollinators (especially those that are endangered or threatened where I am). There's some competition, but mostly at selling-to-landscapers level and not retail, and I'd want to focus on retail sales.
Option B is to get a job with the state doing some kind of ecological restoration work. The problem with that is my bachelor's degree is over a decade old and I don't actually have the kind of experience to put on my resume that would likely convince them that I can do the work (unless a combination of teaching and being self-employed as a gardener that helps people incorporate native plants and removes invasive species counts, which maybe?). So I'd probably have to take a lower level job and one that's further away to get in, and then work my way up.
Option A has the upsides of: completely setting my own schedule, getting to work with plants most of the time, getting to work with my partner, flexibility to decide I want to start teaching classes again or something. It has the down sides of having to do taxes multiple times per year, and not being guaranteed to work, and either needing to take out a business loan to get started or work at a day job to fund starting it up. Also if it fails I'll have to get another job without have professional references again, which yikes.
Option B has the upside of once you're in state work, it's way easier to get other state jobs so if I burn out of one job, I can hop to another relatively easily, will almost certainly make more money, comes with health insurance and retirement savings, and is likely the more stable option. On the down side, it would mean working 40 hours a week without getting to pick my schedule and it would be harder to take time off than it is now, I'll have to work my way up to a comfortable salary, and there's a lot less autonomy than when self employed. But I'll also have professional references out the wazoo, so finding new jobs should be easier?
One of the things that concerns me is I have ADHD and up until teaching, the longest I ever stayed in one job was almost 2 years. I taught for 4 years, then was self-employed as a gardener for 4 years, and now I've worked for this landscaping company for just over a year (and am grumpy about a) not making much money and b) aesthetics and only providing services to people who can afford us, rather than say, improving the environment for everyone). So I'm actually kinda afraid that if I started the native plant nursery, I would get sick of it after less than 5 years and be starting from scratch again. Whereas with a state job, I can pop over to a new job fairly easily. On the other hand, maybe I'm just doubting myself too much because all of those other jobs were actually really bad matches for me.
Anyway, my brain is going in circles over this. I mean, really, part of me thinks I should stay at this job even though it doesn't pay much compared to what I could make elsewhere (I have learned a lot though, which can be transfered to other jobs) just because it's so low stress compared to any other job I've had in the last decade & because the people are great and the work isn't bad. It just galls me that occasionally clients have ideas that I strongly disagree with, like cutting down a very nice magnolia tree because "it's too big" and I just have to do it because I'm an employee now. Ugh.

Black History Facts!!!
#Happy90th
#NAACP
Born Myrlie Louise Beasley on March 17, 1933, in her maternal grandmother’s home in Vicksburg, Mississippi. She was the daughter of James Van Dyke Beasley, a delivery man, and Mildred Washington Beasley, who was 16 years old. Myrlie’s parents separated when she was just a year old; her mother left Vicksburg but decided that Myrlie was too young to travel with her. Since her maternal grandmother worked all day in service, with no time to raise a child, Myrlie was raised by her paternal grandmother, Annie McCain Beasley, and an aunt, Myrlie Beasley Polk. Both women were respected school teachers and they inspired her to follow in their footsteps. Myrlie attended the Magnolia school, took piano lessons, and performed songs, piano pieces or recited poetry at school, in church, and at local clubs.
Myrlie graduated from Magnolia High School (Bowman High School) in 1950. During her years in high school, Myrlie was also a member of the Chansonettes, a girls’ vocal group from Mount Heroden Baptist Church in Vicksburg. In 1950, Myrlie enrolled at Alcorn A&M College, one of the few colleges in the state that accepted African American students, as an education major intending to minor in music. Myrlie is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority. On her first day of school Myrlie met and fell in love with Medgar Evers, a World War II veteran eight years her senior. The meeting changed her college plans, and the couple later married on Christmas Eve of 1951. They later moved to Mound Bayou, and had three children, Darrell Kenyatta, Reena Denise, and James Van Dyke. In Mound Bayou, Myrlie worked as a secretary at the Magnolia Mutual Life Insurance Company.
When Medgar Evers became the Mississippi field secretary for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1954, Myrlie worked alongside him. Myrlie became his secretary and together they organized voter registration drives and civil rights demonstrations. She assisted him as he struggled to end the practice of racial segregation in schools and other public facilities and as he campaigned for voting rights many African Americans were denied this right in the South. For more than a decade, the Everses fought for voting rights, equal access to public accommodations, the desegregation of the University of Mississippi, and for equal rights in general for Mississippi's African American population. As prominent civil rights leaders in Mississippi, the Everses became high-profile targets for pro-segregationist violence and terrorism.
In 1962, their home in Jackson, Mississippi, was firebombed in reaction to an organized boycott of downtown Jackson’s white merchants. The family had been threatened, and Evers targeted by the Ku Klux Klan.
In 1967, after Byron De La Beckwith's release in 1965, she moved with her children to Claremont, California, and emerged as a civil rights activist in her own right. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Pomona College. She spoke on behalf of the NAACP and in 1967 she co-wrote For Us, the Living, which chronicled her late husband's life and work. She also made two unsuccessful bids for U.S. Congress. From 1968 to 1970, Evers was the director of planning at the center for Educational Opportunity for the Claremont Colleges.
From 1973 to 1975, Evers was the vice-president for advertising and publicity at the New York-based advertising firm, Seligman and Lapz. In 1975, she moved to Los Angeles to become the national director for community affairs for the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO). At ARCO she was responsible for developing and managing all the corporate programs. This included overseeing funding for community projects, outreach programs, public and private partnership programs and staff development. She helped secure money for many organizations such as the National Woman’s Educational Fund, and worked with a group that provided meals to the poor and homeless.
Myrlie Evers-Williams continued to explore ways to serve her community and to work with the NAACP. Los Angeles mayor Tom Bradley appointed her to the Board of Public Works as a commissioner in 1987. Evers-Williams was the first black woman to serve as a commissioner on the board, a position she held for 8 years. Evers-Williams also joined the board of the NAACP. By the mid-1990s, the prestigious organization was going through a difficult period marked by scandal and economic problems. Evers-Williams decided that the best way to help the organization was to run for chairperson of the board of directors. She won the position in 1995, just after her second husband’s death due to prostate cancer. As chairperson of the NAACP, Evers-Williams worked to restore the tarnished image of the organization. She also helped improve its financial status, raising enough funds to eliminate its debt. Evers-Williams received many honors for her work, including being named Woman of the Year by Ms. Magazine. With the organization financially stable, she decided to not seek re-election as chairperson in 1998. In that same year, she was awarded the NAACP's Spingarn Medal.

Mr Choi reported corruption of UC officials, then his car tire was slashed
edited computer translation:
▶ Following the attack of a deliberately punctured tire... If Mr Choi had driven down the road at speed, it would have been attempted murder
Religion and Truth | December 6, 2024.  08:29
▲ The suspect enters the hospital to check if the victim was receiving treatment in the emergency room.
Following the violence at the scene of a one-man protest to report corruption of Unification Church officials, an incident occurred where a sharp tool was used to puncture the tire of a parked car.
The crime was committed against Mr. Choi, who had raised suspicions and reported the embezzlement and breach of trust of Unification Church officials on the ‘Unification Church Corruption Eradication Monitoring Committee’ cafe [website].
When he posts articles exposing suspicions of corruption by Unification Church officials on the cafe [website] he runs, it is continuously blocked within 30 minutes.
Mr. Choi was assaulted by a security guard near the Cheonju Cheongpyeong Training Center in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province, and was injured. While receiving treatment in the emergency room of HJ Magnolia International Hospital, a Unification Church hospital, someone used a sharp tool to damage the front tire of a car parked in the parking lot in front of the emergency room.
The victim, Mr Choi said: “I was driving, but the car felt so heavy to drive that I stopped the car and saw that the right front tire had lost air and was deflating. I requested an emergency dispatch from my car insurance company. The driver who was dispatched spent a long time looking for the place where the front tire had lost air. He finally confirmed that the side of the wheel had been ripped. He explained to me that if it took less than 5 minutes for the tire to go flat like this, it must have been ripped in the parking lot.”
▲ Flat tire on the victim’s car parked in the parking lot... deliberately done
Mr. Choi arrived at the emergency room around 3:00 PM that day and was receiving treatment. However, in the meantime, someone approached the car parked in the parking lot and intentionally damaged the tire with a weapon.
Later, CCTV footage showed that Unification Church members were involved. The suspect first called someone, then approached the victim’s vehicle, worked on it for a few minutes, and then leisurely left the parking lot.
What would have happened if Mr Choi had driven down the road with a flat tire?
A tire blowout on the downhill road of HJ Magnolia International Hospital or on the Gyeongchun Line Expressway could have caused a terrible traffic accident.
The suspect must have known that other accidents could have occurred.
While the victim of the assault was receiving treatment at the emergency room, the suspect confirmed that he could not leave right away, went to the parking lot, checked the victim’s vehicle, and committed the crime. He also showed his initiative by avoiding having his image recorded on the vehicle’s black box.
Did he talk to someone before the crime? Who was it?
Mr. Choi reported that the suspect was not alone and sued the high-ranking members of the Unification Church’s Cheonmuwon for instigation of violence and property damage.
If he had gotten in without noticing the tire damage, it would have been an extremely dangerous act of terrorism that could have resulted in casualties. That's why there's even a community post that says this act is attempted murder and property damage.
Puncturing a tire on someone else's car is considered a 'special property damage crime' and can result in up to 5 years in prison or a fine of up to 10 million won.

Why Choose Local Experts for Concrete Projects in Magnolia, TX?
Tumblr media
Concrete is a vital material for many residential and commercial construction projects, offering durability, versatility, and aesthetic appeal. Whether you’re building a new driveway, patio, or foundation, choosing the right contractor is essential for quality results. For homeowners and businesses in Magnolia, TX, working with local experts is the best way to ensure your project is completed efficiently and meets the area’s unique requirements. If you’ve been searching for concrete Magnolia TX services, here’s why hiring local professionals is the smartest decision.
The Benefits of Hiring Local Concrete Experts
1. Knowledge of Magnolia’s Climate and Soil Conditions
Local experts understand Magnolia’s hot and humid climate and how it affects concrete. They tailor their materials and techniques to withstand temperature fluctuations, heavy rain, and soil shifts. For example, Magnolia’s clay-rich soil can cause cracking if the wrong concrete mix or reinforcement techniques are used.
2. Familiarity with Local Regulations
Construction projects in Magnolia must comply with city regulations and building codes. Local contractors specializing in concrete Magnolia TX are well-versed in these requirements. They handle permits, inspections, and other legalities, saving you time and ensuring your project meets legal standards.
3. Quicker Response and Turnaround Times
Proximity matters when you need fast and efficient service. Local contractors can visit your site quickly, provide accurate estimates, and begin work promptly. This responsiveness is particularly valuable for repairs or urgent projects.
4. Community Reputation
Local businesses rely on word-of-mouth recommendations and positive reviews to thrive. Contractors specializing in concrete Magnolia TX are motivated to deliver exceptional results to maintain their reputation in the community.
Types of Concrete Projects in Magnolia, TX
Local experts handle a wide range of concrete projects, including:
1. Driveway Installation and Repair
A professionally installed concrete driveway enhances curb appeal and provides a durable surface for vehicles. Magnolia’s contractors offer custom designs and finishes to match your property’s style.
2. Patios and Outdoor Spaces
Transform your backyard with a concrete patio designed for durability and beauty. Local contractors offer options like stamped concrete, exposed aggregate, and stained finishes for a unique look.
3. Sidewalks and Pathways
Functional and visually appealing sidewalks improve accessibility and safety. Magnolia experts design concrete walkways that withstand heavy foot traffic and weather conditions.
4. Concrete Repairs and Maintenance
Cracked or damaged concrete is not just unsightly; it’s also a safety hazard. Local contractors specialize in repairing driveways, patios, and sidewalks to restore their strength and appearance.
How to Choose the Right Local Concrete Expert
1. Research and Reviews
Start by searching online for concrete Magnolia TX services. Platforms like Google, Yelp, and Angi provide reviews and ratings that help you identify reliable contractors. Look for companies with positive feedback about their punctuality, professionalism, and quality of work.
2. Verify Licensing and Insurance
Ensure the contractor is licensed to operate in Magnolia and carries insurance. This protects you from liability during the project and ensures compliance with local building codes.
3. Ask About Local Experience
Choose a contractor who has completed multiple projects in Magnolia. Their familiarity with local conditions ensures they’ll use the right materials and techniques for long-lasting results.
4. Request a Portfolio and References
Ask for photos of completed projects and contact information for past clients. A strong portfolio and positive references demonstrate the contractor’s expertise and reliability.
5. Get Detailed Quotes
Request itemized estimates from multiple contractors. Compare their prices, timelines, and included services to choose the best option for your budget and needs.
The Value of Customized Solutions
One of the biggest advantages of hiring local contractors in concrete Magnolia TX is their ability to provide tailored solutions. They work closely with you to design concrete features that match your vision and complement your property’s architecture. Whether you’re aiming for a sleek modern look or a rustic aesthetic, Magnolia’s experts have the skills and materials to bring your ideas to life.
Tips for Maximizing Your Concrete Investment
To ensure your concrete projects last for years, follow these maintenance tips:
Seal the Surface Regularly: Sealing protects against moisture, cracks, and stains.
Clean the Concrete Frequently: Remove dirt, debris, and spills to maintain its appearance.
Address Damage Early: Repair minor cracks and chips before they worsen.
Limit Heavy Loads: Avoid parking heavy vehicles on concrete surfaces to prevent stress and cracking.
Trim Nearby Trees: Prevent roots from lifting or damaging your concrete structures.
Avoid Common Mistakes When Hiring a Contractor
1. Choosing Based on Price Alone
While affordability is important, don’t sacrifice quality for a lower price. Cheap contractors may use inferior materials or rush through the job, resulting in costly repairs later.
2. Failing to Check Credentials
Always verify a contractor’s license, insurance, and local experience before hiring them. This protects you from potential legal and financial issues.
3. Neglecting Reviews and References
Reading reviews and speaking with past clients is crucial for understanding the contractor’s reliability and quality of work.
Why Local Experts Outperform National Chains
While national chains may have name recognition, local contractors specializing in concrete Magnolia TX offer personalized service and a deeper understanding of the area’s unique needs. They focus on building long-term relationships with clients and are committed to delivering exceptional results that benefit the community.
Conclusion
For any concrete project in Magnolia, TX, hiring local experts ensures superior results tailored to your property’s needs. Their knowledge of the area’s climate, soil conditions, and regulations, combined with their commitment to quality, makes them the best choice for driveways, patios, sidewalks, and more. By choosing experienced professionals in concrete Magnolia TX, you’ll enjoy durable, beautiful, and functional concrete features that stand the test of time.

HGTV Real Estate and Real Life!
Tumblr media
Chip and Joanna Gaines. They’re a dynamic duo: builder/contractor, real estate agent, interior designer/decorator — all in one delightfully friendly couple! They show prospective homeowners three house options. They help them through the budgeting process. They plan and implement the redesign and renovation and then furnish and decorate it beautifully. They finish the job in a relatively short period of time — and on time.
On tv, this all happens in 30 minutes. Amazing progress is made during commercial breaks. Few surprises. Happy new homeowners.
Home & Garden Television  — now known as HGTV — launched in the early 1990s and focuses on real estate, renovation, home décor and house flipping. Before that, the only show dedicated to home improvement was the PBS series “This Old House.” But HGTV’s popularity exploded and now viewers have many binge-watching options.
And these reality shows have turned real estate agents, builders and interior decorators into household names and empires: Fixer Upper’s Chip and Joanna Gaines, Property Brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott, Flip or Flop’s Tarek and Christina, to name a few.
Let’s get real
How realistic are these scenarios played on tv? They’re popular and addictive, but do they set up unreasonable expectations for homeowners, home buyers and home sellers? What are the biggest misconceptions that these shows promote when it comes to home renovations?
“There are sooo many,” says Stacy Allwein, an agent with CENTURY 21 Redwood Realty. Her husband runs the renovation side of their business and together they have been investing and selling homes since 2006, “long before the popularity of the tv shows.”
Stacy has watched the evolution of home buyers as HGTV has soared in popularity.
“The biggest thing I see is that HGTV makes it seem like it is easier than it actually is to renovate and flip houses,” says Stacy. “They do not include many of the costs when they show purchase price, reno costs and sales price. Rarely do you see monthly carrying costs (insurance, loan payments if a lender is involved, etc.). In reality, the profits are not what you see on Flip this House.”
Buyers’ standards in décor have also risen considerably as they are inundated with picture-perfect homes, not only on television, but also on social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest. Joanna Gaines is one example of a reality tv star becoming an enormously popular design influencer with her sophisticated upscale farmhouse aesthetic. The finished homes on Fixer Upper feature her company’s (Magnolia Market) furnishings and décor, not the homeowners’ real possessions, which might be worn and vintage. If the buyers want to keep the house looking as lovely as Joanna has created, they must purchase the items, which typically isn’t included in the budget mentioned on the show.
“Some buyers expect their homes to look like an HGTV home and if it doesn’t they are not willing to make concessions on their ‘must have’ list,” Stacy says. “When there’s a low inventory in the market like there is these days, buyers have to have more realistic expectations.”
The shows also have their share of purported behind-the-scenes shenanigans including allegations of faking scenes, shoppers hunting for a house that in actuality they have already purchased, staged scenarios and fabricated tension between couples.
And that annual HGTV Dream Home Giveaway? Sounds fabulous! Unfortunately, since the contest began more than 20 years ago, only a few winners have been able to actually keep these luxurious homes once they realize the tax burden. In order to live in the lap of luxury, you need to already be wealthy!
More Misconceptions
Timeline
When it comes to home renovations, the timeline is probably one of the most unrealistic expectations that viewers may walk away with. Your real-life contractor is probably juggling multiple projects, not just yours. The television contractors have a vested interest in solely focusing on a single project for the show.
Cost
Not only do real estate costs vary widely depending on location, but so do renovation costs. And keep in mind, these tv contractors’ rates may be reduced in exchange for the exposure they are getting by appearing on television.
Budget
Those outlandish budgets for seemingly commonplace people have become a running joke. “Ted is a part-time turtle rehabilitator and Marie blogs about invasive plants. Their budget? $1.3 million.”
Market
If you like to binge-watch reruns from the past, keep in mind your current real estate market, factoring in fluctuations. Is it a buyer’s market or a seller’s market? This is important to understand when shopping for your next home.
Location
On television, the value of the area in which the house is located is shown as secondary to the sparkling new kitchens and bathrooms and that amazing patio. When house-hunting, keep in mind that bathrooms and kitchens depreciate in value, but the land under the house should increase in value. Without continued investment, your house will eventually become dated; make sure its location is tried and true, or obviously up and coming.
Another thing about location, location, location: Those adorable Waco-based Fixer Upper homes would cost five times as much in Washington, D.C. As a comparison, the median price of a home that sold in Waco, Texas (where Fixer Upper is filmed) in October 2020 was $132,000. The median price of a home that sold in the Washington, D.C. region in October of 2020 was $675,000.
Search
Unlike the 30-minute shows you watch, you probably won’t find the house of your dreams after looking at just three houses. Buckle up and enjoy the ride.
On the bright side
Despite the misconceptions, HGTV remains hugely popular. Have these shows been at all helpful to the real estate and home renovation industry?
“In my opinion, HGTV has made things a little more exciting for buyers, as long as they are realistic,” says Stacy.
“They also help sellers have great ideas to get their homes prepped for sale. I have one client who has redone a house in one year that could be on HGTV.  I am so proud of this young teacher and her husband. They could have their own tv show: How to Redo a House on a Budget!”
The bottom line: Enjoy the entertainment. Tune in to HGTV for inspiration, but set aside unrealistic expectations.
Contact me so we can find your dream home!

Interesting Facts about Takoma Park MD
Have you been searching for homes for sale in Takoma Park MD? But do you know everything about Takoma Park? Take a look at some of the interesting facts about Takoma Park MD that you must know before buying a home there.
Takoma Park is a suburb in Maryland but did you know there are two Takomas? And these two Takomas share several cultural similarities along with a Metro station and town center. Moreover, these two have celebrated their 50th, 75th and 100th anniversaries jointly. Besides that, there are some other things that you probably didn't know about the neighborhood. Let's take a look:
Tumblr media
● Takoma in DC and Takoma in MD were one once Initially, both the Takomas were part of a single development established by Benjamin Franklin Gilbert in the year 1883, which was then known as Takoma Park. It was planned to be named "Brightwood" after the train station that anchored the development, but Gilbert wasn't happy with the name so he named it Takoma after a fellow guest suggested the name. Later he added Park with it and changed the name of the station to Takoma.
● Gilbert Was a Teetotaler The first business venture of Gilbert was a restaurant known as the Temperance Dining Room in downtown D.C. anti-alcohol stance also got spilled into his new Takoma Park development with every action issued for the development that includes a clause that prohibited the sale or manufacture of spirituous liquors.
● Once Takoma Had a Lot of Natural Springs Takoma was once abundant with natural springs that attracted Gilbert and several other developers before him to this land. However, Gilbert highlighted the feature in his advertisements with a quote stating - "the water is simply pure". Even at a point of time the spring water was bottled and sold by the Takoma Park Springs Company. Two main springs were there that provided drinking water to the residents, i.e. Little Spring and Takoma Spring (Big Spring).
● One of the Original Takoma Park homes is Still Found Here The Cady-Lee home built in 1887 by Henry Cady, an insurance and real estate salesman and his wife Lucinda. The home was designed by the same architect who designed the current residence of Vice President Mike Pence i.e. the Admiralty House. The Cady-Lee home is a three-story building with 22 rooms that was one of the grandest homes built in Takoma Park development at the time. The Cady-Lee home was included in the National Historic Register in 1975.
● The Takoma Park Public Library opened its doors in 19tk for the first time The Takoma Park Library was funded by Andrew Carnegie. It was the first neighborhood library in DC. Carnegie decided to fund the construction of the first central library of DC after he had encountered with a member of the DC Library Board. Carnegie put forth another $350,000 towards the construction of a series of neighborhood libraries. Takoma Park won a bid for one of those library locations, along with Mount Pleasant and Southeast.

J. H. Harvey & Co.
5 West Broad Street (Office & Sales Rooms)
301 North Barton Avenue (Residence), AKA 2401 Barton Avenue
West of Brook Avenue & Admiral Street (Nursery)
West of Reservoir Street, AKA South Harrison Street (Farm)
Tumblr media
[CHRV] — looking towards J. H. Harvey & Co.’s greenhouses, circa 1893 — the photograph identifies this as Barton Heights, but based on available map data, it’s hard to say precisely where
A tangled tale of men who grew flowers.
J. H. Harvey, florist, of 5 West Broad street, has his greenhouses at Barton Heights, a suburb of the city. They cover three or four acres of ground there. He has 60,000 square feet under glass. The greenhouses are heated with hot water. There is a bored well for the water supply of the place, two steam pumps and a wind-mill, hydrants and water-plugs throughout, and the equipment of the place is unquestionably as fine as anything of the kind in the South, and certainly the most extensive here.
Tumblr media
(Ancestry.com) — advertisement for J. H. Harvey & Co. — Richmond, Virginia, City Directory, 1891
The specialty of this establishment is the trade in cut flowers and ornamental plants. These are shipped by it to all parts of the State. The gardens were established in 1870, and three generations of the Harvey family were interested in them. They were founded by the grandfather of the present proprietor. [CHRV]
A little confusing that, since J. H. Harvey’s grandfather was James Harvey, and he died in 1857 (Find A Grave). Perhaps he was responsible for the family’s interest in the flower business, but what became known as Magnolia Nursery was the province of James’s son, Levenous James Harvey.
Tumblr media
(Newspapers.com) — advertisement for Magnolia Nursery by L. J. Harvey — Richmond Dispatch — Saturday, November 15, 1873
He had been in the same line in New Jersey before he came to this city. Mr. J. H. Harvey, the present proprietor, is a young man, but one of enterprise and sterling business character. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and as such is a participant in all the projects set on foot by it to further the interests of the city.
His down-town office and sales-rooms, on Broad street, are in the heart of the city and on the principal business street, easily accessible from all quarters of Richmond. [CHRV]
Tumblr media
February 2021 — looking towards 5 West Broad Street, former location of J. H. Harvey & Co.
Sadly, the original 5 West Broad Street store no longer exists, having been replaced in 1924 with the present building, architected by Hunt and Amrhein. [AOR] It was also the Harvey family’s 2nd store on Broad Street, after moving a few doors east from 11 West Broad Street when the company was run by J. H.’s brother, Jacob Jones Harvey.
Tumblr media
(Library of Congress) — Beers Illustrated Atlas of the Cities of Richmond & Manchester, 1877 — Plate E — showing J. J. Harvey & Bro. Magnolia Nursery
By 1877 Magnolia Nursery was a well-developed enterprise, consuming a considerable piece of land in North Side along Brook Avenue. This of course was back inna day before Lewis Ginter gobbled up the dirt that would eventually become Bellevue, Sherwood and Ginter Parks, and before Brook Avenue would be demoted to the rank of Road. Chamberlayne Avenue would be the new front porch to the north, at least until 95 was built.
J. J Harvey had at this point taken over the family business from L. J. Harvey, who seems to have been stricken with wanderlust in his autumn years. He died a considerable distance from Richmond in 1880 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. (Find A Grave)
Tumblr media
February 2021 — looking west of Brook Road towards the former Magnolia Nursery
Today, the former greenhouse grounds is Hovey Field, home to the Virginia Union University Panthers.
The funny thing is that A City on the James describes J. H. Harvey & Co. as having greenhouses in Barton Heights, which is not quite where Magnolia Nursery was located.
Tumblr media
[MTBH] — Map of the Town of Barton Heights in Henrico County, Va. — James T. Redd and Son, 1896 — showing “Garden Tract” to the northwest — (full-size image)
James H. Barton was a real estate speculator, who in 1890 found success crossing a small residential community with a new streetcar line that connected the area north of Richmond with the city. The allure of suburban living found an audience, among them the J. H. and J. J. Harvey families, and it became the Town of Barton Heights in 1896.
The 1894 Barton Heights Directory lists the Harvey’s were living at 301 North Barton Avenue. It would have been their second at that location. [BHD]
Tumblr media
[BHPSR] — Map of Barton Heights and Brookland Park — Showing the System of Numbering — 1894 — showing 301 North Barton Avenue at the northwest intersection of Barton & Kersting — (full-size image)
Just two years prior, disaster had struck.
The handsome residence at Barton Heights of Mr. J. H. Harvey, the florist, was totally destroyed by fire last night.
Mr. Harvey was at his brother-in-law’s, across the street, engaged in a game of dominos, and happening to glance at one of the windows he discovered flames bursting from the front of his house. When he reached it the hall was a roaring furnace, and it was with difficulty he rescued his children, one of whom was asleep, from the building. There was a large tank of water on the premises, but this proved practically of no use.
When news of the fire reached Chief Puller he sent over Truck No. 3, and would have sent a steamer also, but could not learn whether there was an available water supply. The truck men did splendid service, and it is due to them that the flames did not communicate to Mr. Harvey’s stables and green-houses. [RD11061892]
Tumblr media
(Library of Congress) — Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from Richmond (1908) — Index Plate — showing Barton Heights at right & the location of Magnolia Nursery at left
Apparently the Harvey’s need for greenhouse space was such that they were needed on-hand at their home. However, this was smack in the middle of a residential neighborhood, so it’s hard to imagine it as substantial as the operation off Brook Avenue, itself far removed from Barton Heights. Google Maps calls the distance between the house and main nursery at 1.3 miles—not exactly in the neighborhood.
Tumblr media
March 2021 — looking towards the former 301 North Barton Avenue
Like any good success story, Barton Heights ignited the acquisitive fires of its larger neighbor to the south, and it was annexed by the City of RVA in 1914. (”Manchester today! Tomorrow... Barton Heights!)
Changes followed. The former Kersting Street was renamed to Graham, and the houses were renumbered to fit the city’s scheme. Today, the former 301 North Barton Avenue is now 2401 Barton Avenue, and the residence that used to sit on the corner is gone.
Tumblr media
(Stadium Journey) — undated photo of Hovey Field, Virginia Union University — formerly Magnolia Nursery
As for Magnolia Nursery, by 1896 J. H. Harvey & Co. company was winding down. The Richmond Dispatch reported its dissolution by mutual consent, and later a Deed of Assignment for all of the Harvey properties. [RD04091896] [RD04181896] The former nursery was  eventually acquired by Virginia Union University in 1907 for their athletic grounds.
Tumblr media
[CHRV] — looking southwest towards J. H. Harvey’s Reservoir Branch Barton Heights, circa 1893
The location of Harvey’s other principal property, Reservoir Branch, is more difficult to pin down. It was it was identified as being “west of the reservoir beyond Richmond's suburbs”, which places it in the general vicinity where two cemeteries exist today. [HCO]
Tumblr media
(Library of Congress) — Beers Illustrated Atlas of the Cities of Richmond & Manchester, 1877 — Plate O — showing the south terminus of Reservoir Street and the Marshall Reservoir at lower right
The reservoir in question was Marshall Reservoir, constructed in the early 1800′s, and which was located just southwest of Hollywood Cemetery. It stood near the intersection of two streets, Ashland and Reservoir, since renamed Colorado and Harrison respectively.
Tumblr media
February 2021 — looking towards the entrances to Riverview & Mt. Calvary Cemeteries
The 1877 Beers map shows the area west of Reservoir to be undeveloped, with no sign of any property assigned to J. H. Harvey. Twelve years later, the 1889 Baist map shows the addition of Riverview (1887) and Mt. Calvary (1885) Cemeteries, along with a burgeoning neighborhood to the west, yet still no trace of Harvey’s farm.
Tumblr media
February 2021 — looking towards former location of Marshall Reservoir — the intersection of Harrison & Colorado shown at left where the white truck is parked
On face, it seems reasonable to think that the farm existed on or near the present-day cemeteries, since it was named for a nearby landmark capable of providing the necessary water for a nurseryman, and accessible by a city road of the same name.
Unfortunately, while available maps depict the Harvie name, the Harvey name is absent. Add to that the fact that those cemeteries predate the publication of A City on the James, which depicted the photograph of said farm, makes it hard to place a pin down.
(J. H. Harvey & Co. is part of the Atlas RVA! Project)
Correction
The first version of this post speculated that J. H. Harvey’s competitor W. A. Hammond, who had his own greenhouse operation east of Brook Avenue at Sherwood, may have had a connection to the Harvey properties. This misguided notion was corrected by the discovery of the Barton Heights Directory and Barton Heights pamphlet. It seems more probable that North Side had great land for growing flowers, just ask Lewis Ginter.
