Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka Manga
Tumblr media
"Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka" follows the gripping and intense journey of Asuka Otori, a former magical girl who is forced to return to her duties when Earth is suddenly invaded by ruthless supernatural beings known as Disas. Witnessing the devastating loss of her close friends during their initial battle against the Disas, Asuka reluctantly joins a special military unit named M Squad, composed of other previously retired magical girls turned soldiers.
Asuka soon discovers that being a magical girl isn't just about cute outfits and extraordinary powers; it comes with an immense cost. Suffering from psychological trauma, survivor's guilt, and PTSD due to her past experiences as a warrior against evil forces, Asuka must confront both inner demons and real-life monstrous enemies in order to protect humanity.
Guided by Ryouko Takamachi, their commanding officer and also a well-respected veteran magical girl, M Squad excavates buried secrets within the world of magic while facing unimaginable horrors from the Disas. Each member of the squad brings unique abilities and skills honed through painful sacrifices made during their time as warriors. Together, they delve into dangerous missions where friendship is tested, loyalties are questioned, and sacrifices become inevitable.
Amidst this dark warzone lies poignant explorations of redemption, trauma's lasting impact on mental health, bonds forged among comrades rising above adversity, but most importantly—the strength found within oneself even in the darkest moments. "Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka" is an unforgettable tale combining elements of fantasy, action-packed combat sequences intertwined with emotional depth and complex character arcs—unveiling a unique perspective on what it means to be both a superheroine and human.

I was thinking that Crunchyroll is a really bad site for kids anime because it lacks any good age filters or categories but now that I'm browsing the site it's just dogshit for anime fans in general imo??
Tumblr media
this is the genre tags we have, it's extremely small and general tbh The shows also aren't properly tagged all the time so you might click on something and not see it in there because it wasn't tagged.
For example A Sign of Affection is tagged with "Romance" ONLY. so you can't find it in the shojo tag at all. The way they're defined is up to god as well because they have shows that aren't shojo under the shojo tag and whether or not a show even gets tagged with it seems based on if they remember it exists cuz you might argue maybe My Love Story isn't tagged shojo cuz the protag is male and there's a misconception that shojo = female protag, but Super Lovers is a BL and it IS in there.
It's not based on the magazines they ran in (Skip and Loafer is under shojo but ran in a seinen magazine) and it's not based on the protagonist's gender because Super Lover's is a BL and tagged shojo, and its not even based on like, whether or not the demographic is female regardless of if it's magazine (Precure is a girls anime first series and IS tagged shojo but Brother's Conflict targets girls as well and ISN'T tagged as shojo.)
Under shojo is a subcategory for magical girls which you already see a large glaringly obvious problem here right off the bat, only the very first precure is even in it.
Tumblr media
Since MG is a subcategory of "shojo" it means that any non-shojo magical girls aren't in it, not that it matters since it's utterly lacking in shojo magical girls as well, this is NOT their only selections, they have for shojo magical girls, they have a bunch of Precure of course, Creamy Mami, Fancy Lala, Minky Momo, a few Pretty series shows, and Acro Trip off the top of my head.
Magical Girl IMO shouldnt be a subcategory at all, it should be it's own genre category and they should include everything under the umbrella in there regardless of demographic and then have subcategories such as shojo, ecchi, or idol underneath THAT. Madoka, Spec-ops Asuka, and Boueibu SHOULD be possible to locate under the same category as Sailor Moon and not just by digging through a massive generic tag like "Fantasy"
Mecha is a similar problem where it's a sub category under Sci-fi instead of it's own genre tag, I do think Mecha makes sense as subtag way more than MG does and at least it has a healthy amount of shows in its subcategory but it really should be it's own thing with it's own subtags, doesn't have to be just like, super and real robot it could be for stuff like whether it has heavy romance or the settings like if the battles primarily are in space like Gundam 79 vs in a fantasy isekai world like Escaflowne.
There isn't a tag for BL or Yuri at all, Super Lovers like I mentioned before is tagged as Shojo but Junjou Romantica is tagged as Drama and Romance and Love Stage is only tagged with Romance.
These shows are all way too hard to find if you don't know where to look or what to look for, and a fan who wants to find something new to watch will have little luck since their favorite genres either don't exist or aren't tagged properly, you can't really search unless the genre is in the name and you still get irrelevant shows in the search. So looking for "Yuri" gets you "Yuri on Ice" and not Strawberry Panic, and the "more like this" carousel is hit or miss on if it shows anything relevant. I saw Quintessential Quintuplets and Rent-A-Girlfriend under the recommendations for Citrus and I imagine anyone watching infamous yuri anime Citrus is not interested in a het harem with a male lead or whatever the fuck is going on with rent a girlfriend.
like its one thing imo for Hulu and Netflix to just slap a bunch of anime under one tag and call it a day but a site targeted specifically toward nerds that's trying to be THEE one stop spot for all things anime and japanese media? this is fucking embarrassing.

that makes sense. as for spec-ops asuka, it felt like the closest comparison for the early parts of my-hime due to the two of them sharing a similar... very shounen style of humor. and more broadly it feels like the extreme of the military take on magical girls that shows up in nanoha, symphogear, and yuki yuna
Tumblr media
attempting to chart the evolution of different types of dark magical girl anime
I don't know if anything actually goes in that spot that connects nanoha, day break illusion, and blue reflection ray, but I feel like it represents a distinct branch regardless

Note
spec ops asuka is the actual worse grimdark mg show imo, not only is it one of the most shameless torture porn anime out there but it doesn't even try to adhere to the magical girl aesthetic, everything from the colors to the designs looks ugly af
Really? I'd say Mahou Shoujo Site is much, much worse.
Tumblr media
If I were to make my own ranking of worst Seinen MG series, Mahou Shoujo Site would definitely take first place, while Spec Ops Asuka comes in second.

I promise I have a plan
In canon Yuu is a passive individual, a normal student who has to learn how to handle magical disasters. C!Yuu does often guide their friends to victory, but their main value is in how they can provide a new perspective for the boys who have spent their entire lives being pushed by circumstances beyond their control into villainous roles.
C!Yuu’s empathy pushes them to understand the reason behind the student’s suffering, and their charisma allows them to nudge the boys towards self reflection and healthy solutions.
In the magical girl au I want to explore a story where Yuu isn't a calming presence. Despite having taken on an heroic role since the age of ten this Yuu is used to being active. This may or may not be a good thing. We already have C!Yuu gently takes people by their hand and tugs them towards a brighter future. I want a story where the boys are confronted head on by M!Yuu  and are pushed into a faster overblot  and are shoved off a metaphorical cliff. That they might happen to land on a good solution doesn’t change the more violent nature of M!Yuu’s approach.
M!Yuu can easily take care of magic disasters, but is drastically less capable than C!Yuu when handling non-combat related stress. I will admit to being somewhat inspired by deconstruction series such as Madoka Magica (considered by many to be the magnum opus of magical girl deconstruction) and Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka (I don't recommend this unless you like watching anime ironically. I like how they took a militaristic view on magical girls, but think they were excessive on the gore and fan service). This Yuu has baggage. I've probably spent an unreasonable amount of time brainstorming M!Yuu’s home world and what kind of person it would create.
I still want to keep the bits of personality we’ve seen from canon. C!Yuu is blunt with their friends and somewhat impulsive. The voice lines show us that Yuu will initiate friendly physical contact and invade personal space. We also know that they are a bit of an airhead, as seen from the way Hornton’s identity managed to stay a mystery right up to ch5. Seriously, they got a card signed with the initials M.D. and hand delivered by the Diasomnia vice dormwarden, but it took six people calling Hornton by his full name for Yuu to finally take a hint.
!CYuu is resourceful, which I feel is a skill they have honed due to being magicless in a magic school full of delinquents, so in that regard M!Yuu will come up short. A big difference is that M!Yuu has magic that, while not the same as what is used by the locals, will still put them in a better position when it comes to negotiations. C!Yuu has to put up with a lot of bullshit from Crowley and the students, but M!Yuu is more of a physical threat and her protests can’t be so easily ignored. Overall I hope to make a somewhat absent-minded sledgehammer with occasional episodes of PTSD.

Never thought I'd see the day when fucking Magical Girl Spec Ops Asuka has a better costume design than something in the Madoka franchise, but here you go:
Tumblr media
Still a tad skimpy for my liking, but still miles better than what we got.

Yes magical girl shows have often had dark themes and moments before, but there is one fundamental difference you fail to grasp.
Hope.
There were some heavy, painful moments even in Sailor Moon, but the theme was never just constant despair and suffering, it was about overcoming that darkness.
Working together, defeating the darkness and pain through friendship and love.
If you think the likes of Spec Ops Asuka and Site are comparable to that, you need serious help.
