You're worried about explaining multiverse theory and you just go shooting magic!
That did not mean anything.
Blue Moon narrows his eyes at rattler's comment. Changing his finger gun into a wide palm. Thousands of small runes appearing across the warehouse. Blue Moon only raises an eyebrow. Mouth still stuffed with a metal muffin.
All right, maybe it does mean something.
Can we please stop playing with magic!

It is your first week of basic training at Great Lakes on the north side of Chicago, and as you lie in the top bunk of your assigned bed you wonder what the hell youâve done. You enlisted right out of high school, eighteen, no driverâs license, no work history, never been more than fifty miles outside of Soft Shell, Kentucky. The drill sergeants are always yelling and youâre bad at push-ups; you canât understand the recruits from big cities like Los Angeles, Miami, Las Vegas, Detroit, Houston, and they donât seem to get you either, and arenât interested enough to try. Sometimes you wish you hadnât signed that five-year contract, but where would you be if you werenât here? Home is not words but textures, colors, fumes that still burn in your sinuses: cigarette ash on rose pink carpets, red embers glowing in the wood stove, Hamburger Helper and Mountain Dew, coffee creamer in Hungry Jack potatoes, laughter and heavy footsteps and slamming doors, scratch-off games, dogs barking, collecting coins from couch cushions for gas money, scrubbing clothes in the bathtub when the washer quits, Mama taking gulps from her favorite cupâplastic, Virginia Beach, filled with equal parts Hawaiian Punch and vodkaâwhen she thinks no one is looking, blue shows flickering on the television, Family Feud, Maury, Good Morning America, WWE SmackDown. For as long as you can remember youâve known you couldnât stay. Now youâre getting out, but nothing in life is free.
You are at Class A Technical School in Gulfport, Mississippi, and even though itâs hotter than some noxious, volcanic hellscapeâMercury, Venus, Ioâyou are beginning to like it. You taste the salt of sweat when you lick your lips, sugar in the sweet tea they serve in the chow hall. Thereâs a magic in building something where there was only empty space before, in patching roofs and painting walls. Here being quiet and watchful is exactly what they want from you: head down, hammer striking nails, measurements and angles and long hours under the sun with no complaints. Youâre not just running away anymore. You are creating something new.
You are sitting beneath swaying palm trees and a full moon on Diego Garcia, draining cans of Guinness with Rio, and heâs telling you things he shouldnât, too personal, too honest: Sophie wants to try for a baby next time heâs home on leave, and part of him wants that too but heâs terrified. As thunder rumbles in the distance and raindrops begin to patter on the waves of the Indian Ocean, you tell Rio you think heâd be a good father. He wonders how you figure that, and you say because heâs not like any of the men from home. He gives you one of his crooked smilesâa flash of teeth, knowing dark eyesâand doesnât ask what you mean.
But of course, when you swim up from the inky currents of sleep you are in none of these places. You are curled up on the floor of a bowling alley in Shenandoah, Ohio, cheap worn black carpet peppered with stars and swirls in neon green, pink, blue. You stretch out with a yawn. Someone has left a Lemon Tea Snapple within reach; you twist it open and guzzle it, hoping to extinguish the pounding in your skull, a rhythmic thudding of warm maroon, half Captain Morgan and half misery. The music isnât helping. From the green Toshiba CD player, a man is singing in Spanish. Aegon and Rio are sitting at the nearest table and playing Uno.
Aegon says as he ponders his cards: âYou know Enrique Iglesias, right Rio?â
âYou are so racist.â Rio puts down a wild. âAnd the new color is red. Racist.â
âSo whatâs he saying?â
âAegon, buddy, I told you, I was born here. My grandparents came over in the 60s. I donât speak Spanish.â
âYou canât understand any of it?â Aegon is skeptical. He plays a skip, a reverse, and a seven. âMy dad never taught me a word of Greek but I can recognize plenty of phrases. VlĂĄkas means idiot. SpatĂĄli chĂłrou is a waste of space.â
Rio sighs, relenting. He puts down a two. âThe song is called SĂșbeme La Radio, Turn Up The Radio For Me. Bring me the alcohol that numbs the pain⊠I donât care about anything anymoreâŠYouâve left me in the shadowsâŠâ
âDamn, now Iâm sad. Draw four, bitch.â
âWhen the night comes and you donât answer, I swear to you Iâll stay waiting at your doorâŠâ Rio studies his cards. âWhatâs the new color?â
âGreen.â
âYes!â Rio slams down a skip. âFleeing from the past in every dawn, I canât find any way to erase our historyâŠâ
Everyone else is awake already. As muted late-morning daylight streams in through the small tinted windows, Aemond is weaving between tables, pointedly checking on each person. He glances at you, says nothing, turns around and walks the other way.
âThatâs tough,â Rio says sympathetically, popping open the tab on a can of Chef Boyardee and shoveling ravioli into his mouth with a plastic fork.
Aegon gives you a smirk. âYou want to fake date now?â
âIâll think about it.â No you wonât.
Helaena appears, a prairie girl vision in a modest blue sundress and with her hair tied back with a matching scarf. She reaches into her burlap messenger bag and offers you a choice between a ranch-flavored tuna pouch or a silvery pack of Pop-Tarts. âStrawberry,â she tells you.
âIâll take the Pop-Tarts.â
Helaena gives them to you and then shakes a bottle of Advil. Youâre so groggy it takes you a few seconds to figure out what she wants, then you obediently hold out a hand. Helaena lays two tablets in the center of your palm and moves on, soundlessly like a rabbit or a spider.
You wash the pills down with Snapple. As you nibble half-heartedly on a Pop-Tartâtrying not to look at Aemond, multicolored sprinkles falling down onto the carpetâyour eyes drift to the tattoo on the underside of Aegonâs forearm. Itâs not over âtil youâre underground. Youâve spotted it before. Only now do you remember where you recognize the lyric from. âIs that Green Day?â
âYeah,â Aegon says, enthused that you noticed. âLetterbomb.â
âI love that whole album.â
âMe too. I could sing it front to back if you asked me to.â
âIâm not asking.â
Aegon cackles and resumes his Uno game with Rio. Baela is wearing denim shorts and a crop top, slathering her belly with Palmerâs cocoa butter from Walmart as she chats with Rhaena and eats Teddy Grahams. Daeron is waxing the string of his compound bow. Jace is gnawing on a Twizzler as he scrutinizes Aegonâs map, annotated with Xs and circles and arrows in sparkling gel pen green.
âIâm going to be a thousand years old by the time we get there,â Jace mutters.
Aegon hits the table with his fist. The discard pile collapses and cascades, an avalanche of Uno cards. Rio, undisturbed, continues contemplating his next move. âYou know what, Jace? The cities are full of zombies, the interstates are blocked by fifty-car pileups, if we bump into anyone else whoâs still alive theyâre just as likely to rob and murder us as want to be friends, and on top of all that Iâm trying to do you the favor of preventing you from getting so irradiated you turn into Spider-Man. If you have a better route in mind, Iâd love to hear it.â
âSpider-ManâŠ? Youâre such a dumbass, what are you talking about?!â
Luke says from where he stands by a window: âAemond, someoneâs outside.â
âWhat?â Aemond stares at him. âZombies?â
âNo. People.â
Aemond bolts to the doors, the rest of you close behind him. Rhaena turns off the CD player. You, Rio, and Aegon squeeze together to peer out of one of the windows. There are menâthree of them, no, four, all appearing to be in their fortiesâpassing by on the main road through town. They are armed with what are either AR-15s or M16s, you canât tell which.
Rio whistles. âIf you get shot by one of those, the exit wound will be the size of an orange.â Everyone looks at him. This was not an encouraging thing to say.
You elaborate: âThirty-round magazines. Semiautomatic, assuming theyâre AR-15s for civilian use. I guess they could have gotten ahold of M16s somehow. Those have a fully automatic setting.â
âSo regardless, weâre out-gunned,â Jace says.
âIf they know how to use them. Some men think guns are wall decorations, like deer heads or fish.â
Aegon recoils. âFish?! What the fuck. Iâm glad the colonies left.â
âMaybe theyâll keep walking,â Daeron says hopefully. One of the men stops and points at the bowling alley, saying something to his companions. They laugh and begin crossing the small parking lot. They are less than two minutes from the door. âOh, greatâŠâ
âThereâs an emergency exit in the back,â Baela says.
Aegon snorts. âYeah, that we stacked about twenty boxes of bowling pins in front of to zombie-proof.â
âWe wonât be able to get out before they hear us,â Aemond says. Then he abruptly orders: âGrab your guns, letâs go. Helaena, Baela, Rhaena, youâre staying here.â Aemondâs remaining eyeâbriefly, reluctantlyâskates over you as Rio, Aegon, Jace, Luke, and Daeron scatter to obey him. âYou too.â
âBut Iâm the best shot.â
âI donât want them to know we have women with us.â
âIâm of more use to you outside.â
Aemond rips his Glock out of its holster, pointing it at the floor. His frustration is palpable, an electric shock, heat that refracts light rays until they become mirages on the horizon. âYouâre going to stay here, and if a stranger comes through those doors youâre going to kill them. Okay?â
His urgency stuns you; his eye is blue-white summer storm lightning. âOkay.â
âNow get back.â
You soar to the nearest table, duck under it, reach for your Beretta M9 and double-check the clip, fully loaded. You click off the safety.
âAemond, wait, let me go first,â Aegon is saying by the door. âIâm better at de-escalation, Iâm lessâŠuhâŠintimidating.â
âLess socially incompetent, you mean,â Jace quips.
âIâll lead,â Aemond insists. âAegon can talk. Rio, youâre up front with me.â
Rio pumps his Remington 12 gauge. âIâd be delighted.â
Jace is amused. âIâve been demoted, huh?â
âHeâs bigger,â Aemond replies simply, then opens the door and vanishes through a blinding curtain of daylight. The others follow closely; Daeron, the last one outâhis compound bow in hand, the strap of his Marlin .22 slung over his shoulderâshuts the door behind him.
Very faintly, you can hear Aegon: âHey, guys! Whatâs happening? Howâs the apocalypse treating youâŠ?â
Baela, Rhaena, and Helaena are under the table with you. They deserve to have options. You tell them: âIf you want to go hide behind the lanes or try to get out the back door, nowâs your chance.â
Helaena shakes her head, clutching your t-shirt: black, Star Wars, pawed off a shelf at the Walmart. âI want to stay with you.â
âSame,â Baela says determinedly, gripping her Ruger. She barely knows how to use it, but sheâll try. Rhaena is shaking, her eyes filling up her face, small fragile bones like a birdâs.
You canât hear voices from outside anymore, but there are no gunshots either. You keep your M9 aimed at the doors, your breathing slow and deep, your heart rate low. Your hands are steady. Your eyes hunt for the slightest movement, for the momentary shadow of someone passing by a window. Against your will, your thoughts wander to Aemond. I hope Aegon is on his left side. Aemond canât see there.
âRhaena, get your gun out,â Baela says sharply. âCome on. Turn the safety off. What if you were alone right now? What if we werenât here to protect you?â
Rhaena nods, fumbling to free her revolver from its holster. âIâm sorryâŠIâm tryingâŠâ
Now there is a strangerâs voice, gruff and deep. He must be just beyond the door, the farthest one to the right. There is a creak of hinges, a sliver of sunlight. âThatâs just too damn bad, fellas. You got a nice little hideout here, and youâre gonna have to share itââ
The door opens. Two unfamiliar faces, too shellshocked to raise their rifles in time. You close an eye, line up your sights, fire twice, and thatâs all it takes: one headshot, one in the throat, blood like a fountain, spurting scarlet ruin, thuds against the carpet strewn with neon stars, gurgling and spasms as their brains send out those final electrical impulses: danger, catastrophe, apocalypse. Rhaena is screaming. Helaena is covering her ears with both hands.
You run to the doorway; there are more booms of gunfire out in the parking lot. You cross into the late-morning light to see the other two men on the pavement: one with an arrow through the eye, the other with a gaping, hemorrhaging hole where his heart once was. Rio is admiring his work, holding his shotgun aloft. He scoops a handful of Cheddar Whales out of his shorts pocket and shovels them into his mouth.
âGoddamn, I love Remington Arms Company.â
âOh, that was awesome,â Aegon says, wan and panting, hands on his waist. âYeah, that wasâŠthat wasâŠâ He bends over and vomits Snapple and Cool Ranch Doritos onto the asphalt.
âEveryone okay in there?â Rio asks you.
âYeah.â Behind you, Baela, Rhaena, and Helaena are stepping through the doorway. Your thoughts are whirling sickly: I killed someone. I killed someone. âThey wouldnât leave?â
âWe told them the bowling alley was ours,â Aemond says, not looking at you. âWe asked them very politely to keep moving. They chose to try to intimidate us into letting them stay. They werenât good people, and these are the consequences.â
You click on the safety and re-holster your M9. Youâre wearing Rioâs on your other hip. They seem to weigh so much more than they did ten minutes ago. Iâm not supposed to be a killer. Iâm a builder.
âAegon, are you okay?â Daeron asks, a palm on his brotherâs back.
Aegon retches again. âShut up. You canât even buy fireworks.â
âZombies.â Luke is peering through his binoculars. âNot many, just two. Way up the road.â
âThere will be more.â Baelaâs cradling her belly; you donât even think sheâs aware of it. âThey heard the gunshots, the sound carries for miles.â
âWeâre leaving,â Aemond says. âRight now. Everyone get your things.â
As backpacks are hastily zipped and Daeron and Aegon stand guard in the parking lot, you kneel down beside the men you murdered and check their rifles. They are M16s, either stolen or illegally purchased: thereâs a little switch by the trigger to choose between semi-automatic or the so-called machine gun mode.
âThey barely had any bullets left,â you tell Rio. Just like us when we were trapped on that transmission tower.
âYeah, same story for the other two guys. Four bullets in one magazine, a half dozen in the other. But it only takes once. We donât have any ammo that will work with M16s, do we?â
âNo, we definitely donât.â
âFantastic. Well, weâll throw them in a Walmart cart and take them with us just in case.â
Youâre staring down at the man you shot through the head. His eternal resting place is a puddle of blood and brains in a bowling alley in rural Ohio; surely no one deserves that. âHe was a real person,â you say, dazed. âNot a zombie. Just a person.â
âHey.â Rio grabs your shoulders and spins you towards him. From where he is helping Luke gather up the remaining food, Aemondâs head snaps up to watch. âYou hurt him before he could hurt us. You did the right thing.â
âSure.â
âI killed a dude too. I blew his heart right out of his chest. You think Iâm going to hell for that?â
âNo,â you admit, smiling. âAnd if youâd be there with me, I guess I wouldnât mind so much.â
Rio grins, wide and toothy. âWell alright then. Letâs finish packing.â
The ten of you depart from Shenandoah, Ohio heading northwest on Route 603 just like Aegon marked on his map, Jace chauffeuring Baela in one shopping cart, Rio pushing another loaded high with food and M16s.
âIt looks like rain,â Helaena says.
Everyone else peers up into a clear, cerulean sky, wondering what she means.
~~~~~~~~~~
Youâre a few miles north of Shiloh when the storm rolls in, cold rain and furious wind, daylight that vanishes behind dark churning thunderheads, jagged scars of lightning in an opaque sky. The road is only two lanes, surrounded by fields of wildflowers and ravaged crops and untilled earth; it would look like the patchwork of a quilt if you were gazing down from an airplane, but of course the FAA grounded all flights over a month ago when the world went mad: Revelations, Ragnarök, the fabric of the universe unweaving as death burned through families, cities, nations like a fever, like plague.
âMaybe we should cut across one of these fields,â Jace says, pointing. He is soaked with rain; it drips from his curls, runs into his eyes. Baela is in her cart again; each time she tries to get out and walk, sheâs gasping and canât keep up within half an hour. Youâve all taken turns pushing her, much to Baelaâs dismay. Sheâd be humiliated if she wasnât too exhausted to keep her eyes open.
âHere, let me do it,â you offer, and Jace gratefully relinquishes the cart. Baela gives you a frail wave of appreciation.
âWe stay on the road,â Aemond insists, flinching as rain pelts his scarred face. âFarmhouses have driveways and mailboxes, weâll pass one eventually. If we lose the road, we might not be able to find it again. Weâll end up wandering around in circles in the woods.â
âJust like the Blair Witch Project,â Aegon says glumly, his Sperry Bahama sneakers audibly soggy.
âThere!â Luke announces, spotting something with his binoculars. âUp ahead on the left. Past the bridge.â
You canât see what Luke does until there is an especially brilliant flash of lightning: a farmhouse, old but seemingly not derelict, and with a number of accompanying buildings, guest houses and stables and barns and towering silos.
âHome sweet home!â Rio says. âAnd I donât care if I have to kill a hundred of those undead bastards to get in, itâs mine.â
âWell, hopefully not a hundred,â you reply, in better spirits now that a sanctuary has been found. Aemond keeps glancing back at you as you push Baelaâs cart. If he wants to say something, heâs doing a good job of resisting the temptation. âWe donât have that much ammo.â
There is a concrete bridge over a river, probably unremarkable and only five or ten feet deep normally but now torrential with rain. Water rushes by beneath, a muddy incline on each side as the earth rises back up to meet the road. A reflective green sign proclaims that you are only two miles from Plymouth, which Aegon plans to skirt along the edges of. Itâs a decent-sized town; he thinks you might be able to find a car to steal there, something with gas in the tank and keys on a hook just inside the house.
âI call the master bedroom,â Jace says craftily, rubbing his palms together. Youâre near the center of the bridge now, another ten yards to go. âNice big bed, warm cozy blankets, and I was up for half of last night keeping watch so tonight I am off duty, I am a free man, itâs going to just be me and my girl and eight glorious uninterrupted hours of sleepââ
Rhaena shrieks, and then you hear it over the noise of the storm, pounding rain and rumbling thunder: moans, growls, hisses like snakes. Not one zombie. A lot more than one. Theyâre crawling up from under the bridge, from the filthy quagmire at both ends. There was a hoard of them waiting, aimless, dormant, almost hibernating. But now they are awake. They are grasping for you with bony, dirt-covered claws. They are snapping with jaws that leak blood and pus and bile as their organs curdle to a putrid soup.
âGet off the bridge!â Aemond is shouting. He has his Glock in his right hand, a baseball bat in his left. Heâll shoot until heâs out of bullets, and then, and thenâŠ
Rio helps you get Baela out of the cart, then opens fire. His Remington doesnât just pierce skulls, it vaporizes them. When heâs out of shellsâthere are more in his backpack, but no time to reloadâhe yanks the M16s out of the other Walmart cart and empties each of them, mowing down zombies as the rest of you scramble across the bridge. All around you are explosions of gunshots, thunder, lightning, zombie skulls crushed by bullets and blunt force trauma. Baela is firing her Ruger as you half-drag her, one arm hooked beneath hers and around her back. When the last M16 is empty, Rio starts clubbing zombies with the butt of it. Youâve all reached the north side of the bridge, exceptâŠ
âFuck off, you freaks!â Jace is screaming. Theyâve backed him up against the guardrail, a swarm of ten or more. His Remington shotgun is out of ammo; heâs swinging it wildly, but he doesnât even have enough room to maneuver. There are still more zombies emerging from under the bridge. You can hear them snarling and groaning. You swipe an M9 off your belt and put a bullet in the brain of a zombie as its fingers close around your ankle, then you start picking off the ones mobbing Jace. You arenât fast enough. As they lean in to bite him, teeth gnashing at the delicious throbbing heat of his jugular, Jace throws himself over the barrier and into the surging water below.
âNo!â Baela cries. She careens off the road and into the field, running parallel to the river as swiftly as she can. You are helping her, steadying her, firing at any zombies you have a clear line of sight on. The others are here too: slipping in the muck of the flooding earth, shouting for Jace. He surfaces through the frothing current, flails pitifully, disappears beneath the water again. You glimpse a white hand, a shadow of his dark hair, a kicking shoe. There are more zombies on the opposite side of the river, trailing after Jace, lurching and slobbering viscous, gory saliva. They cannot swim, but they can follow him until he washes ashore.
Jace bursts up through the waves, gasping. âHelp! AemondâŠAemond, for the love of God, help meâŠâ He blubbers and then is dragged under. Aemond and Luke are continuing frantically after him. Baela is hysterical, sobbing, trembling with adrenaline. Aegon is yowling as he swings at zombies with his bloodied golf club. Helaena is darting around almost invisibly, always cowering behind Daeron or Aegon or Rio.
You glance north towards the farmhouse, growing not closer but farther away. We canât leave shelter. We canât leave the road. You lock eyes with Rio. Heâs thinking the same thing.
âAemond, we have to go,â Rio says, but in the midst of the rain and the turmoil it barely registers.
âJace, weâre coming to get you!â Aemond swears. The ground is increasingly sodden, deep, difficult to trudge through. Jace resurfaces, coughing and sputtering.
âJace!â Aegon wails. He caves in the skull of a zombie who was once a registered nurse as Helaena crouches behind him. âJace, Iâm sorry! Iâm gonna miss you, man!â
Jace splashes in the rising river, his arms flailing helplessly. He is being swept away far faster than any of you can move on foot. âAegon, you dumb bitch!â Jace manages, then slips beneath the water and doesnât reappear.
âWhere is he?!â Baela is saying. âAemond, whereâŠ?â
You are trying to soothe her, to bring her back to reality. She was always so pragmatic before; you have to wake her up. âBaela, listen, we canât stay here, he would want you and the baby to be safeââ
âAemond! Aemond, we have to go!â Rio catches him, wrenches him around, roars into his face as driving rain pummels them both: âWe have to go, or weâre going to die here too!â
It hits Aemond all at once; he understands, horror and agony in his sole blue eye. âWe have to go,â he agrees. And then louder, to everyone: âGet to the farmhouse!â
Baela collapses into the mud, howling, tears flooding down her face. âNo, heâs still alive, heâs still alive, we canât leave him!â
You and Rhaena are trying to haul Baela to her feet. Now Aemond is here, pulling you away from herâhis fingers tight and urgent around your wristâas he and Luke take your place. âGo,â he commands. âYou run. Donât wait for us. Rio?â
âI got her,â Rio replies, grabbing your free hand with an iron grip. Gales of wind rip at you; every millimeter of your skin is soaked with rain. As you flee across the fields towards the farmhouse, dozens of zombies pursue you. More are still staggering along the banks of the river, swept up in the hoards chasing Jace and the promise of his waterlogged corpse when it reaches its final destination. Daeron has run out of arrows and is shooting with his .22, which is very much not his preference. Aegon trips, getting covered in mud as he rolls, and Rio stops to help him. While he is distracted, you look back at Aemond. He, Luke, and Baela are moving quickly, but not quickly enough. A drove of zombies is closing in on them. You have a spare few seconds at last. You yank your backpack off, grab a box of ammo inside, and reload your M9.
âChips?!â Rio calls over his shoulder.
âIâm fine.â
He knows you well enough to listen. The world goes quiet as your finger settles on the trigger. Thereâs a rhythm one slips into, an impassionate lethal efficiency. Itâs easier to keep going than to stop and have to find it again. You fire over and over, dropping eight zombies. You sheath your M9 and whip Rioâs out of your other holster, the sights finding grotesque decaying faces illuminated by lightning. You pull the trigger: blood, bones, brains, corpses jerking and convulsing as they fall harmlessly to the mud. Aemond is here; when did he get here?
âI told you to run!â heâs shouting through the storm, furious. Heâs shoving you towards the farmhouse. You resist him.
âLet me kill as many as I canââ
âGo! Now!â Aemond orders over the clashing thunder, and then sprints with you all the way to the front porch to make sure you listen. Everyone else is already there. Helaena has fetched a spare key from under the doormat and is turning it in the lock.
Daeron observes her anxiously. âWe donât know if itâs safe in there, Helaena.â
âNot in,â she says, insistent. âThrough.â Through this building, and maybe through the next one too. The average zombie is not terribly clever. If they lose sight of you, without the benefit of the momentum of a hoard they are lost. Helaena opens the door. The living rush inside, and she locks it behind you. As you are bursting out the back door, you can hear zombies pounding their rotting palms against the front one. You soar through a stable full of dead horses and donkeys, leaving the doors open; this should keep the zombies distracted if they make it this far. Then you race to the farthest guest house. Luke, swiveling with his binoculars, spies no zombies approaching as you steal inside. There is no spare key this time; Rio punches out a first-floor window for you to climb through. Once everyone is inside, he and Aegon move a bookshelf to cover the opening.
You all stand in the living room, gasping and shivering, dripping rain down onto the rug and the hardwood floor. The air is dusty but clean of any trace of vile, swampy decay. Outside, thunder booms and lightning flashes bright enough to illuminate the lightless house. The sky is so dark it might as well be nightfall. Baela sinks to her knees, clamping both hands over her mouth so she wonât sob loudly enough for a zombie to hear. Rhaena and Luke are beside her, both weeping quiet rivulets of tears, trying to comfort her in whispers. Helaena is rummaging around searching for candles; she has already taken a lighter out of her soaked burlap messenger bag.
âDaeron, bro, come over here,â Aegon chokes out. He embraces Daeron, clutches him tightly and desperately, doesnât let go. Rio is reloading his Remington 12 gauge.
Jace is dead. Jace is dead.
Aemond says to you, his voice low but seething: âWhat the fuck was that?â
You blink the raindrops out of your eyes as you stare at him, bewildered. âYou needed help.â
âI told you to run.â
âIâm an asset, I have skills that can keep you alive, why am I here if Iâm not going to be usefulâ?â
âYouâre not in the fucking Navy anymore!â he hisses. âWhen I tell you to run, you run, you donât stop, you donât look back, because I canât worry about you and take care of everyone else.â
âNobody asked you to worry about me.â
âBut I do.â
âAemond,â Aegon pleads, waving him over. Aegonâs plump sunburned cheeks are glistening with rain and tears. âMan, it doesnât matter. Nothing else matters now. Please come here.â
âIâm going to clear the house,â Aemond says instead.
Rio raises an eyebrow at youâthis is one fucked up guy, Chipsâand then pumps his shotgun. âMe too.â He sweeps with Aemond through the main floor and then vanishes up the staircase.
Helaena is lightning candles she found in the kitchen and arranging them around the living room. Daeron starts gathering food from the pantry. Rhaena and Baela are murmuring to each other softly, mournfully. It doesnât feel like something you should intrude on. Luke is peeking out of a window with his binoculars, vigilant for threats. Aegon sniffles, wanders over to you with large, sad, shimmering eyes, pats your shoulder awkwardly.
âHey, Chocolate Chip. You doing okay?â
âNo,â you answer honestly.
âYeah. Me either.â Then he flops down on the hideous burnt orange couch and lies there motionless until Daeron brings him a can of Dr. Pepper. Aegon pops the tab, slurps up foam, and then begins singing to himself very quietly, a song so old you can remember your grandfather saying it was one of his favorites as a boy: A Tombstone Every Mile.
When Rio comes back downstairsâheavy footsteps, he canât help thatâyou meet him at the bottom of the steps. âThe house is good,â Rio says. âAnd Aemondâs in the big bedroom on the right if youâd like to go up there and talk to him.â
âI donât think he wants to see me right now.â
âI could not disagree more,â Rio says with a miserable, exhausted smile. Then he goes to the couch to check on Aegon.
You pick up one of the flickering candles, white and scentless, and ascend the staircase. You find Aemond in the master bedroom, the same accommodations that Jace laid claim to when he was still alive. He is sitting at the edge of the bed and staring at the wall, at nothing. Tentatively, you sit down beside him, placing the candle on the nightstand.
âAemondâŠwhat happened to JaceâŠit wasnât your fault.â
âCriston said I was in charge, thatâs the very last thing he told me. They might be the last words I ever hear from him, and I justâŠâ His voice breaks; he wipes the rain and tears from his face with open palms. âI really wanted to get everyone home.â
âIâm so sorry about what I said at the bowling alley,â you confess, like itâs a dire secret. âI donât want to fight with you, Aemond, IâŠI want to help you. I can see what youâve done for everyone here, me and Rio included, and I believe in you. I want to be a part of this.â
He nods, an acceptance of peace, but he still doesnât look at you.
âCan we start over? Iâll never bring it up again, okay? I wasnât trying to guilt you or upset you or anything. I should have just dropped it. I overreacted. And I understand why being with someone like me maybe wouldnât beâŠsuper appealing.â
âItâs not about that.â
âThen whatâs it about?â
Aemond wrings his hands, shakes his head, at last turns to you, golden candlelight reflected in his eye, his scar cloaked in shadows. His words are hushed, clandestine, soft powerless surrender. âIâm already so afraid of losing you.â
He cares, he hopes, he wants me too? âIâm here right now, Aemond. I donât know what else I can say. Iâd promise you more if I could.â
He reaches out to touch you, to ghost his thumb across your cheekbone, wet with rain. Then he kisses you, so gently you cannot help but imagine the wispy borders of calm white summer clouds, the rustle of leaves as wind blows down the Appalachian Mountains. You donât have to ask him what heâs thinking, what it feels like. You can read it in the startled, firelit wonder on his face.
You taste like the beginning of something, here at the end of the world.
Happy New Year, everyone! I thought it would be fun to do a little retrospective on the game's progress over the last year... Shepherds of Haven has grown so much from the little demo I posted in January 2018, and it continues to steadily build and flourish in so many different and exciting ways! Here's a look at just some of the things we accomplished in 2023!
I added 143,151 words to the game (2.5 main chapters, 8 new character interludes) in 2023: the equivalent of writing the longest Lord of the Rings book in one year! We also broke our huge 1 million word milestoneâwithout including codeâmeaning Shepherds of Haven is now officially twice as long as War and Peace, and almost as long as the entire 7-book Harry Potter series... and all in a single game!
A lot goes into game creation behind the scenes, including the coordination and creation of visual assets for the gameâlike character cards, codex entries, maps, portraits, and backgroundsâfun stuff for the fans (like the MC info template we created), and songs for the official soundtrack. As the game creeps slowly and determinedly towards its initial completion, that also means learning new things as a solo developer to prepare for the future, like learning to build an official website, researching business and tax practices, and beginning to think about how to conduct testing, publishing, and marketing down the road. Much of what I enumerate here hasn't been made public yet and will continue to cook in the background for a while, but I'm very proud of the work I've gotten done this year and will be excited to unveil more in the future!
And of course, for even more Shepherds of Haven content, I've added and completed even more stories for our little library on Patreon (which also has sizable word count at this point): The Bridge of Bones (a Trouble and Riel murder mystery), O Happy Dagger (a dark adventure featuring Briony, Chase, and Red), and The Hunt (a wild tale involving Tallys, Halek, Shery, and new kinds of spirits, fey magic, and Elves) were all serial stories completed in 2023, while Some Kind of Virus is a cyberpunk zombie apocalypse AU that will continue to be updated with new chapters monthly.
A full list of the Shepherd short stories and serial novellas (with links) can be viewed here!
I hope you enjoyed this session of Shepherds of Haven Wrapped! Honestly, this doesn't actually cover everything I've been working on, but some things can't be packaged and listed out neatly, or otherwise won't seem very interesting to anyone else but me! đ As we inch through Chapter 9 and get more interludes done (only a few more main chapters to go), I'm hopeful that I'll also be able to find time to work on my next novel, but we'll see if the Shepherds schedule ends up ramping up or settling down as we work steadily towards finishing the main story!
One important thing before wrapping up is to acknowledge your guys' role in this wonderful, wild journey. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for your invaluable contributions to the development of Shepherds of Haven. Whether you took the time to share links to the game, supported its growth on Discord or Patreon, left encouraging messages or asked interesting questions, reported bugs, or showcased your remarkable works of fanfiction or fanart, I am sincerely thankful for the unwavering support from this amazing community! Your collective efforts have played a pivotal role in shaping the world of the game into what it is today. Words cannot adequately convey my gratitude for your support, and I am truly blessed to have such a passionate community surrounding this project.
As we step into 2024, I am filled with anticipation for the developments awaiting Shepherds of Haven. Big things are on the horizon, and I am so excited to share these experiences with you! Thank you for being an integral part of this journey, and here's to the continued growth of our shared little world. Cheers to 2024âmay it be a year filled with creativity, adventure, and joy! đ
Hali's Fic Superlatives
Welcome to my fic superlatives, where I hand out absolutely unasked-for awards to some of my favorite characters and stories from fics that I read this year. I was going to wait until the end of the year to do these, as I still have plenty of time to read, but honestly, if I don't do them now I'm going to forget that I planned to do them at all!
Please do not take these too seriously - I did not read a ton this year but I always tried to review what I did read! My goal next year is to try and read even more and give myself time to find new writers instead of just reading what I happen to see on my dash.
This list by no means was limited to what was written this year - some of these fics were written previously but I either read them this year or re-read them for joy and I felt like they went well on this list!
CONGRATS TO THE WINNERS OF THESE UNASKED-FOR AWARDS! YOU GET MY LOVE AND ADORATION SORRY THATS IT!
While all of the chapters for Of Ruin are not yet posted, Iâve had the pleasure of being able to beta read this chapter ahead of the general public and it is absolutely the fic of the year for me. It is a robust story full of romance, action, intrigue, beautiful storytelling, and world-building, and it touches every single one of these categories above. It is a knockout.Â
Thank you to all the amazing authors who wrote these works and had the bravery to put them into the world. If anything is tagged wrong, please do not hesitate to correct me!
Best Underrated Shows
Saving MeÂ
Saving Me is about a lonely old guy who invents a time machine so he can go back to his child self and fix all his past mistakes. I learned about this show from this video titled Watch THIS instead of Hailey's On It by M!n!mal M!ss Art. Despite this video, I was still very excited to watch Hailey's On It. It seemed like a story with a cool premise and cute art style (and ultimately I do really like the show) But Hailey's On It wasn't gonna be out for weeks when I came across this video and this video really sold me on giving Saving Me a try. I never would have even heard of this show without that youtube video which would have been a real shame because Saving Me is fantastic! I hope this show reaches more people and I'm dying for a season 3!!!!!
House of Anubis
Mystery is my favorite genre and House of Anubis is chuck full of it. I used to be obsessed with this show back in high school. I had so much fun coming up with theories and live-blogging my thoughts and opinions about each new episode. Some of the acting & dialogue could be a little cringe sometimes but the story is just so good that it doesn't matter. I've heard that Het Huis Anubis (the Dutch version of the show that House of Anubis is based on) is even better, though I haven't gotten around to watching it yet.
Over the Garden Wall
Those of us who have seen Over the Garden Wall seem to agree that this show is amazing! Which makes it feel a little weird to call it underrated. But it seems like so few people have actually seen it. Maybe because it was a mini series, it couldn't reach the same level of popularity as other shows of similar quality. If you like Gravity Falls, you'll likely enjoy Over the Garden Wall as well. (Wirt is even voiced by the same guy who voiced Dipper!) I would highly recommend anyone that hasn't seen it already.
Dead End: Paranormal Park
I feel like it's pretty rare for animated series to exist in the horror genre for some reason. It truly is an untapped market. But if you love horror and animation, Dead End is the show for you! (Of course it's kid friendly horror since the target audience is children) The two main characters, Barney and Norma get jobs at a haunted park and work together to fight ghosts and demons. Dead End has a super cute animation style, in my opinion, and a very diverse set of characters. I encourage everyone to watch it!
Just Add Magic
Just Add Magic is based on a children's book by the same name. It's a show about three girls who love to cook and basically discover that they can use cooking to do magic. It's a pretty interesting take on how magic works in their universe. It's very fun to watch. All of the actors are also so talented! And one of those actors is Zach Callison (the voice of Steven Universe)!
The friendship between the trio is awe-inspiring! They have so much chemistry. It's a pretty fun watch.
The Last Kids On Earth
Based on a comic of the same name, this show is about a group of kids who have to survive on their own when a zombie apocalypse breaks out. And other various creatures start to threaten them (or even become their allies) It's basically a cute found family story. The premise is pretty simplistic but that's what I love about it. The animation style of The Last Kids On Earth is so beautiful as well!
I'm still waiting for a season 3!!!!!
Code Lyoko
I remember as a kid being aware of this show and thinking it looked kind of interesting (and I always loved the theme song!!) but I never ended up watching it back then because I let peer pressure get the better of me. I remember I met someone who brought up how much they loved the show. When I heard them express that interest, I was at first excited to ask them more but before I had the chance, everyone else started making fun of him for liking Code Lyoko.
I guess it was like the nerd show or something? I don't really know why it was considered cringe to like Code Lyoko but upon seeing my peers act this way, I decided I can't like Code Lyoko if I want to fit in. So, I avoided watching it. But earlier this year, when I was flipping through channels, they were showing old episodes of Code Lyoko! I was intrigued since I remembered it from childhood and thought I'd actually give it a chance this time. And it's actually a pretty good show! It can be slow at times but overall I enjoy it.
If you're like me and avoided watching this back then due to peer pressure, I highly recommend leaving that in the past and just letting yourself enjoy this show!!
Slugterra
Slugterra is honestly pretty similar to Pokemon, except it's slugs! And the entire series takes place underground. Basically, there's a whole underground world called Slugterra, home to slugs, trolls, moles, etc. And all the slugs have cool powers so the people collect & befriend slugs so they can use them as weapons ("slugslinging"). If you like Pokemon, you're sure to like Slugterra!
Detentionaire
I discovered Detentionaire randomly while I was searching through Amazon's library of cartoons. I was looking for a new show to watch and just stumbled upon this one. It looked pretty interesting and I was surprised to see it was a show from 2011. I don't know how I missed this show back then. Idk if maybe it only aired in Canada or something? (cuz it's a Canadian show) But anyways, Detentionaire is such an intriguing show where the main character, Lee, discovers some grand conspiracy and has to try to expose it to prove his innocence so he can get out of detention. It's such an interesting concept. And, as I mentioned earlier, mystery is my favor genre, so I had a lot of fun with this one.
The only problem though is, of course, it ends on a cliffhanger. The show got canceled before they had the chance to conclude the story in a satisfying way (or any type of way) so watch at your own risk.
Catscratch
I honestly don't even remember what this show was about but I do remember enjoying this show and being excited when I saw a new episode was out. I remember thinking it was so funny. I just don't think enough people know about this show.
I just had a dream that was basically a zombie apocalypse AU of obey me, where sometime after the extange programa a virus breaks out in the human realm and MC and Solomon desperately try to find a cure with both necromancy and science. (In my dream, they used somesort of necromancy type magic, so it'd only affect the dead) MC returned to the Devildom to research more magic and be safer while doing it; but MC (still being mortal) works themselves to the bone, barely sleeping or stopping to eat. So Mammon (and the rest of the brothers but mainly Mamms) are desperate to get MC to take a break, which MC (due to stress) kinda snaps at him because 'humans as a species are in danger' which in response (instewd of backing down) he brings up that if MC doesn't stop and take a break they'll probably end up stressing to death (because humans are fragile) and leave Solomon alone to try and fix this so MC tales a break but all they can think about is the literal apocalypse happening in the human realm.
ALSO, in my dream, whenever MC had to go to the human realm or were ever in danger, the brothers would bust ass and kill any zombies trying to kill/bite/get to MC.
Anyway, I thought that was interesting đ€·ââïž
Three Hearts As One | C.S, J.WY
AO3 Link | Masterlist
Summary: It had been a good day. That should have been the first warning sign that something was about to go horribly wrong. After all, how much peace can you expect in an apocalypse?
Pairing: Choi San x F!Reader x Jung Wooyoung
Genre: Zombie apocalypse AU, angst
Word Count: 2k
Warning(s): Major character death (so sorry)
A/N: Despite being short and sad, this is one of my personal favorites! Based on a dream I had that was way too realistic and also Wooyoung saying that if a zombie apocalypse happened and San turned into a zombie, he would want San to bite him because that would be less upsetting than being on his own.
It had been a good day. The traps you had set the night before were filled with game, and you had full stomachs for the first time in forever. Wooyoungâs ankle was finally feeling better after he twisted it running from a horde a few weeks ago. San even found a creek that ran off into the most beautiful lake, and the three of you bathed and played around in it for hours. Things almost felt normal, as if you were just three people in love on a beautiful summer day, enjoying each otherâs company.
That should have been the first warning sign that something was about to go horribly wrong. After all, how much peace can you expect in an apocalypse?
You stare at the bite with wide eyes, blood turning to ice in your veins. This canât be happeningânot to one of you, not after you have made it this far. Youâre three days away from what is supposedly the safest compound in the nation, armed with soldiers and doctors working towards a cure. A cure! But that wonât help you now. Not when it only takes a few hours to turn. Despite the freshness of the wound, itâs obvious the infection has already begun to spread. Sanâs skin is marred with greenish-purple bruising, and black veins pulsate around the outside of the bite, pumping the toxin further into his bloodstream.
The swarm came out of nowhere, ambushing the three of you in a pharmacy where you were looking for supplies. One of youâyou canât even remember who at this point, it doesnât matterâopened a door that set off an alarm. It didnât take more than a minute for your good day to become hell on earth. You tried to get out the same way you got in, but the runners had already blocked it off. You had no choice but to try to climb up one of the pharmacy shelves and squeeze out through a window. San made sure that you and Wooyoung went first, taking care of you the way he always does, and thatâs when it happened.
He didnât even notice at first, too focused on trying to get everyone to safety, too much adrenaline pumping in his veins. The bite shouldnât have been able to reach his skin, but the duct tape he had wrapped around his forearms was too old and worn; you had been looking for a new roll for weeks and couldnât find one. Youâre not sure how long it took, but eventually, you made it to a house that was strongly barricaded, and the horde lost track of you. After checking the house for threatsâwhether that be other zombies or hostile survivorsâyou finally had a chance to catch your breaths.
Now, San stands frozen, cradling his arm to his chest. He hasnât taken his eyes away from the bite since he noticed it, not even blinking, pupils blown wide. Wooyoung whimpers, looking between the two of you frantically as if hoping that one of you might magically have a solution that doesnât involve a bullet to the brain.
You instinctively reach for your gun, and Wooyoung grabs your hand.
âNo! No, you canât.â
âWooâŠâ
âNo! Stop it, please. Heâs going to be fine.â He gives you one last stern look before moving away from you and towards San. He moves slowly, with a gentleness he only ever exudes in the most serious of situations.
Lightly stroking the side of Sanâs face to wake him from his daze, Wooyoung murmurs, âDarlingâŠâ
San snaps to attention, backing away from Wooyoung and pressing himself against the wall. He curls into himself, trying to make himself as small as possible. You feel as if your heart is being torn out of your chest, watching him physically try to distance himself from the both of you.
âDonât⊠donât come near me. You should both stay away from me.â
âSannie, please, donât be like this. You should let Y/N clean the wound, at least.â
He shakes his head. âNo, donât waste the supplies.â
âWasteâŠ? No, stop it. Youâre going to be fine; we just need toââ
âWooyoung.â You hug him from behind, partly for his comfort but mostly for yours. You can feel his body shaking, the way heâs barely holding himself together.
âPlease,â his voice trembles. âPlease, I need one of you to tell me that it will all be okay. Please, please.â
You squeeze your eyes shut, wishing it was enough to block out the reality unfolding before you. San has been the glue keeping Wooyoung together since everything first started. How are you supposed to make him accept what has to happen without breaking him completely?
Despite the situation, San still manages to smile, though it doesnât reach his eyes. âBaby, itâs okay.â
âWhat? No, itâs not. Nothing is okay! We are so close! Letâs just get to the compound and they can fix youââ
Your voice is muffled against Wooyoungâs back. âWeâre too far away, and we donât even know if the cure is ready yeââ
Wooyoung jerks himself out of your hold, stepping closer to San who flinches away from him and slides further down the wall, burying his face in his knees. âStop! Stop combatting everything I say! Do you want him to die?!â
You know heâs speaking from a place of desperation, of fear, but the words hurt you just the same. âWooyoung, how could you even say that? Of course I donât, I love him! Iâm justââ
âPlease stop fighting. Please.â Sanâs voice is weak, yet he still manages to stop the both of you in your tracks. âI donât want my last memory of you to be⊠to be something so angry.â
Wooyoung looks at San and his gaze immediately softens. âThis will not be your last memory. There has to be another option, we are not killing you!â
âIâm already dead, baby.â
Both you and Wooyoung freeze, the fight completely draining out of you. Those four words break whatever resolve Wooyoung had left, and he lets out a heart-wrenching sob. He stumbles over to San, and this time San lets him approach, looking at him with sad eyes. He doesnât resist as Wooyoung forces himself half onto his lapâall he does is make sure his injured arm is hidden safely behind his back so that there is no risk of contamination.
Through tears, Wooyoung asks, âWhat if⊠what if we just let it happen? We just let him turn, and he can turn us, and we can all stay togetherââ
San stops him short. âWooyoung, no. I wonât become one of those things. I wonât lose my humanity, and I wonât hurt you. Either of you.â He meets your gaze over Wooyoungâs head, eyes shimmering with unshed tears. âI need the both of you to survive. You deserve to make it. To finally live safely, happy, and free of worry.â
You let out a shuddering breath. âYou deserve that too, Sannie, as much as either of us. Itâs the three of us against the world, remember?â
âThree hearts as one,â Wooyoung whispers.
âMy heart will always be yours. That wonât change, even when Iâm gone.â
Wooyoung grabs the hem of Sanâs shirt, crumpling the fabric in his fist. He holds onto it so tightly his knuckles turn white, as if heâs lost at sea and itâs his only lifeline. He opens his mouth to say something but nothing comes out except choked sobs, his chest heaving with panicked breaths. San pulls him close, burying his head into his chest and placing a kiss on his temple.
You finally break down and move to join them, slotting yourself against Sanâs opposite side and throwing one of your arms around Wooyoung. San looks at you with adoring eyes, a tear finally escaping. You reach up and brush it away with your free hand before leaning forward to kiss him for what may very well be the last time. However, he turns his head, so your lips hit his cheek instead. For a moment, youâre heartbroken, but San quickly notices the hurt clouding your expression and explains.
âYou can get infected through bodily fluids. Thereâs no way of knowing ifââ his voice cracks, and he clears his throat, but he can no longer stop himself from crying. âWe canât risk it, as much as I want to. God, do I want to.â
A few moments pass in silence as the three of you cry together in a heap on the floor, your bodies touching wherever they can. It is so hard to accept that this is the last time you will feel each other like this, the last time you will feel the warmth of Sanâs body and the steady beating of his heart. Youâve been together since the start, falling more deeply in love with every passing day. Luckily, you and Wooyoung will still have one another, but neither of you will ever be whole again.
Wooyoung finally speaks again, words muffled against Sanâs chest. âYou canât leave, please⊠you always take care of us.â
San laughs through his tears. âYou have taken care of me too, you know. You will be okay without me. Both of you will.â
Sanâs laughter turns into coughing, and he pushes the both of you away, covering his mouth with his elbow. You quickly stand, pulling Wooyoung up with you and farther away. Surprisingly, he doesnât resist. When San moves his arm, his sleeve is dotted with blood. He shuts his eyes and takes a deep breath before pulling out his gun. He empties the barrel, except for one singular bullet, and rolls the rest towards you.
âTake them; theyâre the same ones that you use.â
You reach down to pick them up, but your hands shake so much that it takes you a couple of tries. Wooyoung begins to pace behind you, repeatedly muttering, âno, no, no,â under his breath.
âI want you both to leave me here, okay? Neither of you has to see this.â
âNo, absolutely not.â You speak firmly, with no room for argument. âYou will not die alone. I wonât let that happen. Iâll take Woo to another room andââ
âNo!â Wooyoung yells. You and San shoot him a look, the both of you still worried about potential lurkers outside despite the situation. Wooyoung quiets his voice and continues, âI will not leave. We are in this together, just like everything else so far. And Iâm not⊠I wonât let you do it yourself, are you kidding me?â
Sanâs eyes widen. âNo, I canât ask you to do that.â
You crouch in front of him, caress his face, and tell him, âYou donât always have to be strong, you know?â He instinctively nuzzles into your hand, just like he always does, before backing away from you and your touch.
âIâŠâ He looks at both of you and, for the first time, he lets the fear show itself on his face. âOkay. Please stay. Please donât leave me alone.â
âNever, my love. Never.â You kiss his forehead before taking the gun from his hand and backing away.
Wooyoung mimics you and places a lingering kiss on Sanâs forehead, murmuring a soft, âI love you,â and joining you at your side.
âI love you too, baby. I love you both with everything I have, until the end of time.â He wipes his eyes with the back of his hand and then nods. âIâm ready.â
You raise the gun, shaking so badly you can barely hold it steady. Wooyoung comes up behind you and wraps his arms around you, giving you the support you need to straighten your aim. He buries his head into your neck and you can feel tears against your skin. You make eye contact with San over the barrel and he is looking at you with nothing but adoration and love, just like always.
âI love you so much.â
He smiles and mouths, âI love you more.â
And then you pull the trigger.
Bella, the once successful druid honed in to the sun circles magic, was at first stranded in Golden Hills. Well, stranded isn't really the right word, her home was there. She helped anywhere she could, becoming one of the more reliable people in the community, despite her worsening mood and overall declining health. And so, one day, she simply vanished from the village. Now she travels alone, save for her steed, Seto. She's since ceased suppressing her magical nature, and refuses to hide it again. While her physical health recovered, her mental state seems to be far gone, seeing herself as an "executioner," attacking quite literally everything she comes across, zombie or not. It's almost like she believes she can single-handedly bring this apocalypse to an end. Some believe she stopped being Bella a long time ago, some argue she was turned all those weeks ago and only has a sliver of her ghost guiding the shell of who she was, some believe she's a grim reaper. Truth is, she's just lost her mind. It's a miracle she's still standing.
Rowan is a little less extreme. She was on a business trip to Jorvik Stables during the initial outbreak, and is therefore stationed in Jarlaheim. As she used to work with Farah in crafting, and had started to learn the basics of the moon circle, they became responsible for gathering materials and crafting resources. Normally, Rowan is a nervous wreck, but their sense of duty and desperate need to be helpful is keeping their mind in check. Somewhat, at least. They'll push herself to leave the safety of the walls to help the community. She'll also happily skip the next patrol by mending clothes and reinforcing defenses. At first she just wanted to survive. Then she wanted to help. Now, they just want this madness to end. Lately, as Jarlaheims resources are dwindling, they've been thinking of leaving the community and travelling to the Dark Riders in the Valley, to help them figure out a way to find a cure, or anything, to make everything go back to normal. She just wants things to go back to normal.
am i late out? maybe. did i want to do this anyway? yeah.
what kind of lore is Eureka working with, gimme the rundown
Well, as mentioned in a previous post, Eureka is essentially half setting-agnostic, with the intention of being able to run anything from the present day all the way back to the mid-1800s. It could do zombie apocalypse, 1930s Noir, Wild West, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Call of Cthulhu modules, Delta Green modules, SCP Foundation, Monster of the Week modules, etc.
But the other half is where the basis for supernatural player characters comes from. This half is actually heavily based on the lore of my own horror-comedy literary work, working-titled American Vampire, which follows eventful âlifeâ of an eight-hundred-year-old vampire named Yvette as she navigates life in the 1990s and 21st century after nearly a hundred years in hibernation, and finally, finally accepts and embraces her own vampirism. The lore and tone are so similar that Eureka could almost be called an American Vampire TTRPG. (But it cant be called that, the name American Vampire has already been taken by another literary work.)
Here is the lore that Eureka and American Vampire share:
the background of this lore is a normal, everyday contemporary setting. The âreal worldâ, not some other planet or completely alternate universe.
There are real supernatural creatures and people, but there is no âmasqueradeâ. No worldwide global conspiracy/pact binds supernatural creatures to secrecy.
There is no secret worldwide vampire government or even a vampire community, supernatural creatures cant even usually pick each other out in a crowd.
Despite there being no worldwide agreement to keep all of this a secret, belief in vampires or ghosts or werewolves or anything of the sort is still widely considered baseless superstition. This is partially because actual supernatural creatures are so incredibly rare that 95% of people will never meet one in their lifetime, and even a supernatural person may never meet another of their kind. In American Vampire thereâs canonically only, like, about one-hundred vampires in the entire United States. Also, on an individual level, the vast majority of supernatural people have a pretty serious incentive to keep their own identity a secret because they, like, eat people. If they admitted that to the world then at best they would get arrested.
The other reason the existence of supernatural monsters remains widely unknown is because people who do encounter this kind of thing tend to rationalize it and find normal explanations for it. If you saw somebody with huge fangs in real life, youâd probably assume that they got them surgically done instead of assuming theyâre a real vampire. In fact, Yvette in American Vampire is âoutâ to the world by the mid-2010s. She does almost nothing to hide her vampirism, and is even a mid-level career streamer, all with the âgimmickâ that she claims to be a real vampire. People tend to think sheâs just acting, or that sheâs just completely delusional. Many other supernatural creatures live similar lives, working normal jobs, wearing a hat to cover up their horns or sunglasses to hide their weird eyes, and only revealing their true nature to very close friends, if anyone at all.
Monsters are magical and rarely adhere to modern scientific understanding. And most importantly, they have magical weaknesses. The most interesting thing about a monster is usually their weaknesses, and the most interesting, challenging, and fun thing about playing a monster in Eureka is trying to work around those weaknesses while keeping oneâs true nature a secret, even from the other party members and their players.
Supernatural player characters in Eureka must be hidden from everyone except for the player that is playing them and the game master. You arenât supposed to tell anyone else at the table. There are gameplay consequences for if a monster gets discovered, even by other monsters, and it usually involves a lot of Composure damage. (Composure is like an emotional HP system in Eureka, and you lose points of composure from extreme fear and/or stress. It is NOT, however, a sanity system.)
This Composure damage also affects other monsters because, like I said above, monsters eat normal people, but 99% of a monsterâs friends are also going to be normal people. You may never even consider eating your buddies, but this guy would chow down on them without a second thought, heâs got to go!
Of course, you could play Eureka without this monster character lore, especially if you wanted to use it for, say, a completely contemporary murder mystery on a train where none of the mystery solvers are secretly vampires, and Eureka works perfectly fine for that, its core gameplay is designed to be able to totally stand on its own, but we have found that the possibility of any party member being something horrible in disguise can really spice up just about any mystery.
Last minute note in case it wasnât clear: The party members that are secretly monsters are not usually opposed to the main goals of the party, they arenât secret villains, theyâre protagonists just like everybody else, and they want to solve this mystery just as badly. They just have to do it with the added risk that somebody might notice they donât cast a shadow.
Ace Attorney AU August (halfway progress update!)
Okay technically it's the 16th (lol, 17th by the time this is done) so a little over halfway actually, but still I thought since I haven't had anything finished to post the past few days this would be a fun alternative!
I've been going a little nuts (affectionate) over @augustwritingchallenge's AU-gust prompts list this year so August has been a wild ride (about 40k words of one, in fact. so far.) but seeing as I will get attached to even the jokiest of AU ideas instantly, I've completed* a whopping 5 whole fics of 16, lol. Considering the shortest of those is over 3k and the longest is over 12k, I think the problem with not finishing these in a timely manner is entirely on my verbose foolish thick skull, haha, but I'm still having a blast with it.
Here is my ao3 series where I'm posting!
And a rundown / progress report / quick teaser of all the AUs including those I've yet to finish, if anyone's interested:
(*by "completed" I should note two of the already posted fics are basically assuredly going to be continued past the challenge, but let's say "completed enough to post and be on theme")
1. Canon Divergence - complete - 4.5k words ("For the Murder of Mr. Wrong" link)
Mia POV, gen. What if Dahlia succeeded in poisoning Phoenix and framed Doug Swallow instead (and then Mia defended him in court)? Basically a 3-1 rewrite. Fun Fact: I only came up with this AU because before I even remembered AU-gust existed at all, I'd come up with like 4 totally separate AUs in which I poison Phoenix in various ways With Real Consequences because it amuses me, lol, but he survives all those other ones and I eventually realized I hadn't even considered straight up killing him off yet so I figured I should try it at least once, haha.
2. Colorless - complete 1st chapter - 3.2k words ("Grey Matters" link)
Phoenix POV (for 1st ch --prob alternating after), wrightworth. "You can't see color until the first time you touch your soulmate"-soulmate AU. 1st chapter is their first meeting as kids (skipping the class trial itself). Fun Fact(s): I really love a color soulmate AU! Big fan of the "only see the color of their eyes" type of one too but uhhh on top of that working better for things that have wild anime eye colors, you could not pay me enough to try to figure out what the HELL is going on with Ace Attorney eye colors at any given time lmfao. (Also--spoilers for what i haven't written yet but hey if you're here you earned it--this IS one of my very many "teehee what if i poison Phoenix just a smidge as a treat for me" fics. NOT my fault the man ATE GLASS. That's on him.)
3. Dark Academia - complete "1st chapter" - 4.4k words ("The Spirit of the Laws of Magic" link)
Mia POV, lanamia. Magical boarding school setting featuring corruption and missing-student conspiracies and a most likely overthought system of magic with hierarchies and prejudices in societal views of academic/formulaic vs folk/innate magic. Fun Fact: I really thought for SURE i was going to skip this day entirely, lol. (foolish.) I don't think i've actually ever personally read anything "dark academia", technically--so if this doesn't read EXACTLY that way, there you go, but i did my best. I also then thought I could live with keeping this vague but I accidentally thought about it too long so... plus at least two people on top of myself at this point have expressed interest in more of this and so I have some semi-concrete Plansâą now.
4. Zombie Apocalypse - conceptualized (but not started)
Concept: probably gen and Phoenix POV, but also because I'm me and they're them, at least a little bit wrightworth even if it isn't necessarily explicit in any meaningful way bc they are Not Normal about each other lol. A little sketchy on how much of an "AU" this counts for, since it could probably be argued to be canon compliant somehow, but basically just: Universe where they make a Pride and Prejudice and Zombies-type Steel Samurai reboot movie thing (featuring, you guessed it, zombies), and Miles comes over and forces Phoenix to watch it with him just to have someone to bitch about it at, and then during that time Maya blows her way into Phoenix's apartment as well with the exact same intentions except her "day job" isn't quite as time-sensitive-strict so she's already finished watching it earlier and knows all the spoilers. Honestly a good chance Phoenix and Pearl (who came with Maya) end up hiding out in the kitchen together to let Maya and Miles rile each other up in front of the TV, but I'm never exactly sure where they'll take me once I wind them up and set them loose on the page, so who knows. I also hadn't necessarily determined the exact time frame yet but for it to make sense as a reboot-type movie/special episode/whatever it probably should be 7yg-or-later so Trucy may or may not be there as well. (That said, in my struggles to complete an actually short one-shot, I probably shouldn't even include Pearl let alone Trucy, lol.) Fun Fact: I also thought I'd skip this day bc I'm not the biggest zombie guy in the world, and to be fair, I managed to do Way Less with it than the dark academia prompt so, yippie?
5. Chess Players - incomplete (currently 3k word WIP)
Miles POV, wrightworth. Miles is a chess grandmaster and back in Japanifornia for the upcoming world cup tournament, but his greatest challenge is actually to FINALLY best Franziska in their annual who-can-get-the-best-Christmas-gift competition. Luckily, he just so happened to hear of an artist who makes bespoke chess sets, so the plan is to get a custom board made for Franziska without her finding out. The plan is not to get trapped in a weird art collective labyrinth with some model-photographer named Cindy who keeps hitting on him but also happens to be protective of the artist he's there to see because "she and her boyfriend kinda-sorta owe him big time", but this is what he gets for coming here without doing any extra research into the artist besides seeing his work and hearing only "his name is White, or, eh, something like that, you know how those artist types are" from Mr. Amano. (AU where we replace law with chess and no I don't think Phoenix could necessarily hack it in the top-world-grandmasters-level of chess tournaments HOWEVER have you considered he DID go to art school so what if he just tries selling custom chess sets until somehow that reconnects him with Miles. Is that somehow a more insane plan than studying law? Maybe. Did Manfred still shoot Gregory but now it was over fucking chess? Maybe. Idk. But I did let Greg live this time at least!) Fun Fact: we can all DEFINITIVELY blame my lovely, terrible, very wonderful friend Ben (shameless friend plug! she's an outstanding writer and has some AA fics of her own too!! @kindlystrawberry on tumblr!!) for making a total joke about "well what about au where they make chess pieces instead" while i lamented not knowing enough about chess to write an actual match and spawning this ENTIRE concept. It is her fault. 100%. She is the guilty party. (I want to finish this one VERY BADLY. Save me.)
EVIDENCE!!!!! Guilty.
6. Reality Show - incomplete (currently 700 word WIP)
Phoenix (& Franziska) POV(s), background wrightworth wedding planning going on as set up but it's also definitely just one of my many excuses to set Phoenix and Franziska up as bitchy worsties who can't admit they enjoy each other's company and will cut you down if you suggest it as such. So far I've only written the quote "set-up" section which is in Phoenix's POV, but that was SUPPOSED to be like 5 paragraphs and cut away and then lead into my actual plan for the main body, which was to be in Franz's instead, so. This is very similar to the zombie one in that it's them watching reality tv instead of being contestants on a show (I don't personally like or watch a lot of reality tv so my creative well was somewhat dry on how to make that work) and then I accidentally thought about Phoenix and Franziska watching something just to judge and tear apart the decisions of every person on it and that was too fun to not consider further, haha. Basically the plan is just they get left alone together and don't know what to do with that and end up wine-drunk and making fun of some reality dating show of some kind and Miles and Trucy come back to them losing it together over something stupid and are like "......uh. what's happening." Fun Facts: I really love the thought experiment of Franziska somehow discovering how often Phoenix's internal dialogue/reads on situations and especially people can be So Bitchy And Judgey despite his affable complexion, and her unfortunately finding his opinions to SOMETIMES be somehow slightly okay. Moderately correct, even--occasionally. I know the section she follows you-as-Phoenix around in T&T is really not long at ALL, but I adore it. There's something about it that so badly makes me want to force them into proximity more (to both their chagrin, I'm sure).
7. Farm/Ranch - complete - 12k words ("Two Little Dickey Byrdes" link)
Gumshoe POV, gumbyrde (tho i still think dickeybyrde is a funnier ship name). 5+1 things--except more like maybe 7-or-8+1 to be honest--so it's more: over 5 times Dick and Maggey sit on a wall together and 1 time they find someone else there instead. AKA: Dick runs his family's small farm (think fantasy farm like in a farming sim or maybe horse girl novel type of thing that has nothing to do with what a real farm is like lol don't worry about it) and Maggey starts working at the next farm over as the latest of her many odd jobs. Fun Fact: oh god this one got so far away from me. it was not supposed to be this long lmao. it's literally the elaborate set-up to a very silly Nursery-Rhyme-I-Didn't-Even-Know-About-Prior-To-This -based punchline!?! still, i was pleasantly surprised by how happy i was with this once it was done... two sittings and about 16 total hours later. haha).
8. Nomad - incomplete (planned/outlined)
Apollo (or possibly Klavier) POV, klapollo. Sort of Jove-Thalassa swap adjacent, but basically: AU where Jove survives the Khura'in fire but loses his memories for [contrived convince sake reasons]. (And also possibly loses some or all of his eyesight just to really go for the parallels?) Therefore: Jove and Apollo stay with Dhurke and Nahyuta and the Defiant Dragons for a time, while Jove recovers, but eventually they leave and head out on their own, just the two of them, and do the traveling musician thing, both because it's dangerous in Khura'in and Dhurke already canonically didn't want Apollo to get caught up in it and potentially get hurt to begin with and because with a functioning actual parent Apollo doesn't need to be taken in by him--and also Jove from what little we know seems like he prefers to be on the move and was already a world traveler anyhow, so even amnesiac maybe he gets a little antsy stuck in one place too long. And so like amnesiac Thalassa, Jove thusly becoming a renowned mysterious musician--and then Apollo, sweet tone deaf Apollo, becoming the sonager of all time (like a momager but...you get it) because he's not that into music but he IS into arguing for better conditions/making deals (contracts!! international legalese!! woohoo!!) with venues and promoters and stuff. And then--oops dang Lamioir still exists and now they have a meet-cute (2 electric bugaloo) (but by then it's later enough Trucy still exists because it will be a cold day in hell when I don't find a way to make her work) and they do music collabs or join up to form a group or whatever and OOPS this means now that Apollo and Jove are with Lamioir when The Gavinners / Klavier specifically meet her and get her to come to do the Guitar's Serenade concert eventually. And Apollo and Klavier ofc thusly also have a meet-cute and then talk and bond etc etc. AND THEN the au STOPS THERE and I DON'T think about how without Apollo Phoenix is totally getting convicted of Zak's murder because there's no way that trial works out as well for him with some other attorney and I also don't think about how reasonable it would then be that maybe Trucy ends up helping Valant with his work setting up the trick for the concert afterward on account of the one father in prison and the other being dead and having left behind a notarized confession clearing Valant's name of suspicion, etc. AND I DEFINITELY do not think about how i could then still so easily get everyone in one place at the concert for Turnabout Serenade and/or any possible funny Sibling (And Thalassa) Reveal that could happen i dont i dont i do not--
9. Accidental Baby Acquisition - conceptualized (not started)
Gen, possibly my weakest / least defined idea on this list, but basically: Phoenix kind of already lives this in canon, lol (insomuch as an 8yo counts as a baby) so I thought, well, how to take it a different direction, then? And I thought, I don't usually go for a Phoenix Fey kind of au because I personally really love the relationships he has with all the Feys as-is in canon and so it's not quite as funny to me as, say, a Miles Fey AU where like Misty and Gregory are married, or any of the ones in that bent, because I'm sorry but that's just SO funny (and sad, but mostly funny) any way you slice it--plus his NAME is RIGHT THERE mia-miles-maya he FITS--anyhow, that completely aside, there are just a lot of reasons I really love the platonic relationships the Feys already have with Phoenix and I don't think it NEEDS to be made specifically familial to still be so very important, y'know? BUT. That said. AU where Phoenix is idk abandoned as a baby or maybe his parents die young or something and it's like a Thing to leave babies at temples or churches or whatever, right? So like--Phoenix adopted by the Feys AU but only because the more i considered it the more i thought it would be WILD for him to literally know Maya her entire life, and it's fascinating to me to consider a Maya who ISN'T basically left all alone to her own devices (and Morgan's) and who has someone absolutely in her corner in the village the entire time even after Mia leaves (who isn't a baby when Mia leaves, love you tho Pearls), AND also and perhaps more importantly, the ships-passing-in-the-night-ness of a scene where, like: Morgan does something sketchy or whatever and Phoenix wants to keep Mia updated but for whatever reason decides to go down to the city and actually tell her in person and so he's waiting outside the courthouse or something (possibly part of or perhaps Most Of the reason he goes in person is because he knows her first courtroom trial is that day and he wants to see her + hear how it went) and when he gets there she's in a heated argument with some asshole in a fancy over-embellished jacket and once that guy leaves Phoenix is like "Sheesh, what's his problem?" You know???? And maybe he really would never even know!!!! Bc he grew up in Kurain!!!! And has no reason to care!!! About some random prosecutor who was mean to Mia!! Aaaah!!! So that, and on top of that, Diego would be there too ofc at that point, and I feel like he would ALSO be quite a funny interaction in this scenario. ("Wow, someone's popular, kitten, you have all sorts of guys waiting on a chance to talk to you, heh?" "Uh.--I'm sorry, WHAT did you just call her")
10. Enemies-to-Allies - incomplete (currently 370 word WIP)
Ema POV, faraskye. Cyberpunk AU where Lana is still under Gant's thumb and Ema, with no other way to stay close to her and getting rejected from any of the sorts of jobs she really wants to do, decides to just join the security force (or cyber police or w/e I decide to call it) and is tasked with hunting down the Yatagarasu, guerilla hacker supreme who is threatening the sanctity of the capitalist overlords. Except Ema's squad gets ambushed and she's captured and tied to a pole, and with her useless fop partner seemingly not coming to rescue her (if he even noticed her absence), she does some quick cost-benefit analysis and decides she didn't really like that job anyway and maybe there's another way she can get her sister back in her life. So she breaks free of her own handcuffs (which she definitely didn't modify into incidental ineffectiveness she's still testing for bugs) and helps fix the "Little Thief" device her captor seems to have broken despite how obviously valuable and impressive the tech is, and they eventually come to something of an agreement. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em, and all that. Either Ema as the hardware-engineer one and Kay as the software-programming one as the two sides of the tech coin, or else Kay can just be like doing the physical sneaking kind of spy stuff only--or maybe she knows a little about software but not so much she's a pro the way she is with infiltration and such. Possibly toying with the idea Kay herself is just completely an android, but if not, I think she has some cybernetic cyborg things going on regardless. Possibly from or inspired by her father? I also like the idea that Gant did something maybe more drastic with regards to having dirt on Ema to get Lana to do his bidding--like maybe Ema has a whole cybernetic hand because instead of just her handprint on a leather jacket, Gant has some sicko jar with her entire hand in it in his office safe, or something. I don't know why this would be useful to him but it is certainly an image. I also find it funny if Miss Fingerprint Powder Enthusiast doesn't actually have any fingerprints of her own anymore somehow in this AU, lol.
11. Retail Worker - complete - 6.7k words ("The Bake Anything Boulangerie" link)
Apollo POV, gen. Phoenix gets a job at a bakery instead of the Borscht Bowl Club during the 7 year gap, and Apollo happens to stumble across it and ends up meeting the Wrights while he's still in high school. He becomes a regular at the bakery and is already close to them by the time "Shadi Smith's" murder comes around. And also, yes, sibling reveal right away--at least as soon as Phoenix realizes and can reveal it. As a treat. (Other reveals, though, I might put poor Apollo through on a delayed basis. Also as a treat, lmao, just not one for him.) Fun Fact: I'm being redundant bc this is also in my a/n, but, Baker Phoenix lives rent-free in my brain because Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright was in fact the very first Ace Attorney game I ever played, technically, and Maya and Phoenix semi-brainwashed in that bakery was literally one of my first impressions of them. ........followed immediately by starting a let's play of Justice for All (which i watched through the first case, after which I was like oKAY fine maybe i DO need more context here, i should probably figure out what the actual first game is, and went back to start the series properly at the beginning hahaha). What do you MEAN i have a disproportionate fascination with amnesiac Phoenix, even if I have yet to finish and publish one of my myriad AUs that utilize stupid, unrealistic, plot convenient re-temporary amnesia?? Hm???? Idk what you're talking about. Also everyone who complains about 2-1 is wrong lmao it's objectively (okay subjectively is what i'm saying yes BUT objectively) such a funny place to start without knowing broad plot strokes, it's great. I both knew so much and absolutely shit-all nothing about Maya after PLvPW and 2-1, LMAO. god.
12. Animagus Wings (Joker) - incomplete (planned/outlined)
Miles POV, wrightworth. Angel/Demon AU, except I'm playing super fast and loose with the rules on that because all my knowledge of Christian-mythos comes from firstly and unknowingly the Chronicles of Narnia and more recently and cognizantly Lucifer (Netflix) and Good Omens. I know that's probably more or less what we're all doing with this kind of AU but still, I'm not even sure I want to refer to Heaven and Hell here, I'm kinda on the fence about maybe just keeping it all very vague? I also accidentally semi-worldbuilt more than i intended incidentally on account of "But Then How-Why Names If Angelic Creatures?" Format-wise it would semi-follow gomens s1 where it's hopping through some meetings between long stretches but also a kind of pre- and post- Fall type of thing? And potentially Ă la Lucifer becoming, like, these are My Mortal Humans and i will be Spending Time With Them, screw you celestial duties, I'm making my own Free Will, etc. And i mean i guess Lucifer is also a crime procedural lmao maybe they still solve crimes in the end too. Fun Fact: I didn't want to do the original prompt for several reasons, and sure fuck jkr is one of them but even before I knew about her I still wasn't really the biggest hp person in the first place? So i wouldn't know/don't remember at all the way it works without having to do the specific research and i...don't want to haha. Hence. And I know the prompt seems to be using it loosely / might just be borrowing the word and not actually referencing hp specifically but tbh either way human-animal shifter things just in general I can be somewhat picky about haha. (Okay okay plus full disclosure the ONLY idea I have for this sort of thing actually ties into my day-3-dark-academia-extended-au-verse and i COULD make my life simpler by just connecting the two days but Heh who would I be if I simplified things for myself... *sigh*) All that to say: I saw "wings" on the wild card list and I thought, ooh, well that's still sort of a related concept! Let's tag that one in! So it's still kind of day 12 prompt-adjacent, if you squint.
13. Found Footage - incomplete (planned/outlined)
Video Transcript POV? Is that a thing? Possibly capped by a little Phoenix POV (but i don't want that to get too long), wrightworth. Larry's new girlfriend of the month bakes weed brownies and Larry does not realize this and swings by the Wrights' apartment to beg some kind of help off Phoenix and forgets the whole tray there somehow (because it's Larry) and they leave to deal with Larry's thing and by the time they figure the brownies out, in some twist of fate Miles and Trucy have been hanging out (last minute babysitter/adult supervision? but she's at the very very least 14 or 15 here and most likely older, and Nick clearly isn't the most strict about like uhhh supervision in general lol sooo idk. he's helping her with a project or smth. it doesn't really actually matter; he's THERE, that's the important thing.) The point I'm very clearly getting at is they accidentally get incredibly high (not dangerously so because I'm not going that far haha but also, neither of them has actually been high before, so they are Affected) before Phoenix finds out what was in the brownies and tries to warn Trucy and hurry home to like, dispose of them or at least put a warning label on them or whatever, but he is too late lol. By a lot. Definitely an underage drugs tag on this bad boy because it's definitely sometime 18-or-earlier for Trucy, let alone 21. (idk about other places but as a Californian I can tell you Japanifornia "LA" could theoretically have it legalized at 21 for anyone (like alcohol) and 18 with Dr's permission--which Trucy definitely does not have in this AU lol.) Basically, Phoenix grabs Trucy's phone to get photo evidence so he can let them never live this down (after making sure they're okay lmao), but he ofc doesn't get technology so he doesn't realize he leaves the phone still recording when Trucy asks him for something / needs his help, so the recording just keeps going and captures a lot of tomfoolery and eventually some inebriated-to-Extremely-sober Feelings-Adjacent confessions (or maybe more like allusions). Idk, this was actually a fic I thought of before August and wanted to use as an excuse to try a Weird Format for fun, but then i saw this was a prompt on the list and...well. Fun Fact: Cannabis was legalized in California on November 8, 2016 (the first election I could vote in!!! ......uh, rip. lol. but yeah babey I helped legalize weed at least!! gotta remember the positives), which means it was legal right in time for Miles' case(s) / Turnabout Goodbyes!!! Yay!! I mean, I suppose that's genuinely seriously one way to try to mitigate nightmares and manage insomnia--not that I think Miles Edgeworth would ever deign stoop so low as to use an aid to manage his severe PTSD and trauma symptoms, psshaw, who do you take him for? (Get these people some help lol. They all need so much therapy.)
14. Princes & Princesses - conceptualized (not started)
So I've been reading a lot (a LOT) of isekai and/or revenge reincarnation romance fantasy manhwas lately (like, oh, too many, hahaha. they're quite good and they're VERY popular in webcomics at the moment.) Soooo. Soft pitch: Apollo already gets slapped into so many wild backstories he's constantly trying to dodge in an effort to be just a Normal Guy, he's honestly, like, the PERFECT protagonist for one of these lmao. And tell me Kristoph doesn't make a perfect "Upstanding Duke" kind of persona, and Klavier couldn't be the "wild rake" younger brother no one expects much from, and all I'm saying is it wouldn't be that hard to contrive a reason Apollo tries to get Klavier to agree to a contract marriage the way all these stories go, lol. And also, something something, Apollo from the "real world" is an orphan/has an absent family (also like so many of these manhwa protagonists, lol) but then he gets to actually have one in his second life!! I'm such a sucker for that shit. Slightly harder pitch, and the reason I did not let myself actually start writing anything (...yet): so what if the actual plot of the "original romance novel" Apollo is familiar with from the "real world (Earth)" is actually about the slightly older generation and something something instead of admiring Phoenix as a defense attorney, it's just that he instead was Apollo's favorite "love interest" character (not, like, for himself, just the one he most liked to read about) in every way except what a blithering idiot he became when the author had him fall for the female lead--but BEFORE that, he's a cool information guild leader guy who seems like he's trying to work toward some way to improve conditions for commoners in the kingdom (but abruptly there are no more mentions of this after he gets involved with the lead, which is annoying). Aaaand... I guess what I'm saying is, Dahlia is the original female lead because she REALLY fits the whole White Lotus trope, and I'm thinking Klavier is the original male lead because A) hilarious, B) fits in with the idea there's more going on in the ACTUAL world Apollo ends up in that is written in such a way as to make things seem different in the novel (like, that Dahlia and Klavier are actually as nice as they seem and that the terrible things that happen around them are just the trials and tribulations of being main characters and not anything they're directly involved in). And Apollo, the character in the novel Apollo, is an adopted prince of Khura'in, but he's the sickly younger prince and of course not actually of the royal bloodline (and also a man, considering Khura'in is matrilineal), so Rayfa and Nahyuta are the ones the public and other nobles actually know and care about and deal with. But wait! As it so turns out, The Wright Anything Information Guild (I feel like the actual guild name CAN'T have their freaking name on it front and center lol but you get the idea) happens to know some other things that aren't really expanded on in the original novel, and might be key to preventing Apollo's death so he doesn't follow the path of the original story, and also idk maybe Apollo and Trucy are half-fae or something like that and instead of like Aw Yay Bracelet in this AU it's more of a secret Iron Shackle Tool That Will Hurt I Mean Totally-Definitely-Help Us Later (still, in a way, passed down to him by Thalassa, but more as, like... she's kind of a secret hostage and does not manage to hide pregnancy number one so Apollo's now also a secret hostage, but she manages to escape so they don't know about Trucy, only she didn't tell Apollo basically anything to "keep him as safe as possible" or w/e, and......) Well, anyway. It got away from me before I even really wrote anything, that's all.
15. Secretly Alien - unfinished (currently 2.6k WIP)
Trucy POV, gen. Apollo gets sick of very consistently always losing the card games they play at the Wright Anything Agency (usually and in the specific instance the fic starts, Bullshit/BS) and in a stroke of inspiration somehow ropes everyone into playing Among Us instead. ("What! It's still a game of trying to lie/trick everyone else--like you like!--but I actually stand a freaking chance, so we're playing this or I'm going home.") Yes. This is my Among Us AU. Hi. They play Among Us. I'm justifying this one as prime AU territory however because A) Among Us has to exist in this universe, and even more pressingly, B) I found a way to force Phoenix to have--for at least a period of time if not moving forward in perpetuity--an actual smartphone instead of a Nokia-type brick cellphone. Which even under the wild but somehow plausible considering Ace Attorney circumstances I contrived, is just automatically a complete AU lmao. Fun Fact: I am so mad this one wasn't just totally finished day-of, lol. Why I ever thought I could give myself run of an entire WAA 4-person conversation and NOT get instantly derailed is beyond me. (And I want to get the prosecutors there, too?? Someone take the characters away from me.) Anyway. No, I have not written ANY of the actual Among Us part yet. Sigh. Also I haven't personally played amogus since like, 2021? maybe? And I know (now) that it's been pretty updated since then, but, ehhh, I'm just gonna run off like, lockdown-era amogus rules and vibes, lol. If I can get to the game part.
16 - Hobby Drama - conceptualized
I'm going to go out of order this time to say: Fun Fact: I have ALWAYS wanted to write a Reddit-style fic!!! I absolutely love them and I've read some REALLY, really good ones, so I've always wanted to try my hand at it. So theoretically this is the perfect time to make that a reality and write a r/HobbyDrama subreddit fic, buuut I got stuck before starting because I'm torn on two possible routes to take it (I can easily foresee myself caving and just doing both lol). - Option 1: Steel Samurai fandom discourse, always a fun/funny thing to think about, definitely would enjoy having Maya and Miles post some stuff for that. - Option 2: courtroom law fandom discourse, because come ON, how are those galleries ALWAYS SO FULL. The little wiggling rabba-rabba onlookers have GOT to have investment in this shit. And why WOULDN'T they, honestly. I've seen those trials and I have, in fact, spent a Lot of time thinking about them, not that any posts I've made lately would reflect that in any way or anything. Like I know it's hard to tell, but if I can be invested in the Lawyers Fandom, who's to say the people in the courtrooms aren't????? And I LOVE an outsider POV fic actually, I think they're so fun. So anyway. Reddit fic. You will be mine. Just as soon as I can hone my energy
And, what the hell, since it's so late now by the time I complete this "Heh This'll Be So Quick To Throw Together" post, I'll include today's, too:
17 - Flower Shop - conceptualized (at work earlier today. lol)
AU where Daddy Hawthorne is like, 97% less shitty. And the Hawthornes have a flower shop instead of like a gemstone industry or whatever. And he takes both Dahlia and Iris with him instead of dumping one of his daughters at a fucking secluded mountain temple and seemingly forgetting about her forever. On second thought, maybe what I actually mean is he's like 999% less shitty, lmfao. Anyway, Iris POV, but Dahlia (while not a "nice" person by any stretch) is not pushed to such extremes or nearly as desperate as canon, so Valerie lives, Terry Fawles lives, Doug Swallow lives, and Dahlia gets to live a good life overall--because as much fun as I love using her as a villain, she's really such a product of the absolute worst circumstances and I really do find her interesting so I've been kind of wanting to explore her in a less cartoonishly evil light, haha. (Don't get me wrong, I do love the cartoonishly evil light too, but I like spicing things up sometimes.) Like, she does (more) normal teen rebellion things ("Look at my inappropriately older boyfriend, Dad" "I'm going to talk my way out of speeding tickets and petty shoplifting as a bid for attention" etc.) and she still totally orders Iris around and Iris still totally does whatever she asks very much to her own detriment and has to learn to break away and be her own person. Fun Fact: I have a very passionate love for Iris/Adrian Andrews. Is that. Um. Is that a ship anyone else has ever considered before? Is that just me? I'm not sure but very possibly I'll just make this a rarepair fic as a treat, for me alone, teehee. (Like... it's about the becoming the master of your own destiny it's about breaking out of codependent cycles it's about how I genuinely honestly think they'd be each other's type and have chemistry even though they've obviously never interacted lmao... idk what to tell you.)
AND THATS MY AU-GUST UPDATE POST!!!
If you made it this far, take a sprinkle of my undying affection, and may you be blessed with AU inspiration if you so desire it!! (If you do not desire it, hopefully you are not cursed with it. I do not take refunds if you are. Sorry.)
Wish me luck with completing some more fics soon!!! Unfortunately weekends are actually my least free time because I work the most and the earliest hours so I have less time and am more tired, but also on Wednesday I'm leaving for a family vacation, which will either be the BEST thing to happen in regards to AU-gust or the WORST thing lmfao. If nothing else I have 2 flights, and I actually Love writing on an airplane, so fingers crossed for it being Good. <3
EDIT: Now with part 2 for the rest of the month here!
My take on the "infection" au, basically back to the original zombie apocalypse vibe uwu I'm not a fan of the creepy infection stuff its a little much but I saw an artist making angsty trolls next gen stuff and I wanted to do somethings similar ^^
The first character is a broppy child.
Basically the idea is the bergens get sick and star eating trolls again and act liked zombies, they are completely mindless. Broppy have an egg and it hatches and Bridget doesn't come to the shower so they go to see her and realise she sick, Poppy is the first victim ^^
After losing Poppy Branch as the king (through marriage) gets all the trolls into the bunker and they live there for years. The broppy child is called Begonia, begonias are a flower that mean warming and danger is coming heh but they also mean good communication which is something very important to broppy since poppy sucks at communication in the second movie ans then its branch in the third movie. They both learn and over come it so I believe the name suit their kid for this au well.
After years of living in the bunker begonia gets tired of it and when she turns 14 she snaps at branch who never talks about poppy or the outside ans she sneaks out. Alarms go off and branch goes to find her, he get to her just as she's about to get eaten. History repeats ans Branch saves her at the coast of his own life. Just like his grandma rip ^^
Begonia escapes back to the bunker and has to step up as queen now, unprepared Creek helps her. Creek is good and has actually been helpful, he put his differences aside with Branch and helped him a lot now he helps Begonia.
Somewhere else in mount rageon floyd is living in the sewers with the few trolls who also lived there. Only trolls don't get infected because of their magic ( they seem to have some special magical abilities when they sing no other creatures posses) some of the mount rageons get infected and those that don't flee to the sewers with the trolls because they are in the big city there underground would be the sewers. Some mount rageons notice the trolls are completely unaffected and ask if they can run COMPLETELY human experiments and with the consent they work together to try and come up with a cure.
Floyd also became popular after the scandal with v and v and thats why he returned to mount rageon to finally succeed in his solo career but it was short lived.
Floyd is now a sewer troll and Creek and Begonia are Bunker trolls ^_^
Begonia if she wasn't grey and all the important details uwu
Also creeks hair drooped because he's saaaaad this is something I've noticed in the first movie ? Or it might have been tbgo series, I remember it was am old detail i loved
Response to âThe Magic Trick You Didnât Seeâ / The Coffee Theory
I, like many people in the Good Omens fandom, have already read the big essay âThe Magic Trick You Didnât seeâ âwhich blows up the coffee theory thatâs been circulating on my twitter page to greater heights and big claims. I have some thoughts.
First of all: I think that the original essay has a few details wrong, essentially because it falls into a kind of utilitarian perspective with the whole magic show metaphor. The thing is âsometimes details which are left hanging, or themes which are shown to be important, donât always tie up somewhere. Sometimes theyâre there because theyâre interesting, or poking at intrigue âtrying to get you to notice and note down for later, rather than evidence of one ultimate solution thatâll be revealed as a holistic great plot. Also âI didnât think the writing was good in this momentâ isnât very convincing to me, Iâm sorry.
But âI do think that they were onto something. I hesitate to make any grand claims, like âMaggie isnât real,â or âThe Metatron is editing the book of life,â because -to be honest- I donât trust myself to put my name to something as big as that, and I donât want to erase my favourite thing about Good Omens: its whimsicality. But I will say that there are themes and notable elements which I think will be important later and hint at some larger fuckery (if youâll excuse the OFMD reference) going on, so consider this a kind of rejigging of the theory to be a more thematic approach that lays out things I just thought were interesting under an more open-ended (or flip-floppy, depending on how you take it) idea:
Something was going on this season which will be revealed as a Heavenly plot to split Aziraphale and Crowley up by the end. It worked. And the person to reveal the greater plot will be Muriel.
Iâll write down first of all a list of things that have been introduced to the world of Good Omens which I think are important, and highlight why one of them sticks out to me. Then Iâll work on a thematic basis of what things are shown to be worth narrative focus/presuppose S3. The first two themes are very much commentary drawing on the essay Iâm responding to, and the second two are more my own ideas âcertainly the fourth.
Okay, so: there are introductions to the Good Omens-verse which are clearly there to expand our world for later use. I donât know if all of these things will come up again, but by the end of this season we know:
There are Nazi (and possibly more) zombies running around London.
There is a gun in Aziraphaleâs bookshop -in case itâs needed.Â
Heaven is interested in keeping things quiet, and they will fiddle with memories to do so. Erased memories can be âstoredâ in things/creatures.
There is a thing called âThe Book of Lifeâ that if youâre written out of, you NEVER EXISTED. (It can be edited, too, presumably.)
Crowley is possibly the most powerful being in the show. âHalf a tiny miracleâ ends up being enough to resurrect someone 25 times over, and his attempt to stay calm after a little tiff with aziraphale results in draining the street of electricity. Also he created the entire universe. (coming back to amend this with the fact Neil said he got going just "that tiny corner of space" -but I still feel there is significant evidence to say he is very powerful:) )
I lay these out because theyâre just good to have noted down, really, and because theyâre definitely GOING to be important. ALSO because the last one makes sense for the greater aim to be breaking up the ineffable husbands. Emphasis on Crowleyâs power âand for their shared powerâ sets up a REAL threat for what we KNOW will be the basis of s2: The Second Coming. If youâre Heaven, and you want the second attempt at an apocalypse to be successful, youâd be stupid to let the two celestial beings who were meddling in the whole averted-apocalypse ordeal last time to just be AROUND for it. Especially when one has the ability to stop time!!! Youâve GOT to break them up.Â
Theme 1: Investigation (Muriel!)
Investigation is a fun little theme in s2: Aziraphale goes full detective mode. He loves the clues, heâs in his little trilby investigating. All the marketing was very investigative and invites the audience to pay close attention. And there are SO many little easter eggs. From The Colour of Magic appearing to Gabriel reading the first lines of Good Omens âeven as small as a Terry Prattchet impersonator speaking over the tannoy in Hell, or the film in The Resurrectionist being chosen specifically to play because thereâs a scene where Jimmy Stewart talks to a fly.Â
So! Investigation is fun! Itâs important. And my favourite part of the essay Iâm responding to is definitely that about Muriel. I think that all this build up to the detective-vibe is going to cumulate in their s3 role. Essentially: I entirely agree that they are coded as the one to blow open this whole case in S3. The police costume and giving them The Crow Road are certainly suggestiveâbut more than anything, leaving them in charge of the bookshop (full of Aziraphaleâs diaries and books and everything) props them up perfectly to earn the promo they got for s2. Because Iâm not sure about you, but my mutuals and I were shocked that the NYCC scene (âhello hello hello, Iâm a human police officer!â) didnât happen until episode three. From the way the promo was going (character profiles, trailer etc.) I thought Muriel would be in s2 WAY more.
They also make a HUGE point of how Muriel is considered ânobody.â They say it themselves, theyâre called âthe dull oneâ by Metatron.
They set them up perfectly to solve this later.
Theme 2: Memories and Stories:
Memory! Another theme! âmemory that can be tampered with, contained, erased and returned.
Heaven is willing to meddle with and erase memories if necessary. They are, then, SUBTLE.
There is no God narrator.
There is a statue immortalising a very real Gabriel (somehow/for some reason âGabriel was also involved in its making?)Â
My favourite part of season 2 was definitely the minisodes. The costumes, the settings âI was so surprised to find the horses and carts in ep 3 were CGI in the X-Ray! They look so good! I loved how every single flashback was incredibly vital and interesting to expand on Aziraphale and Crowleyâs relationship âthat convo on the rock in ep 2? WOW. Stunned. Anyway, not to go on.
I completely disagree with the conviction that these were edited. I think that, to the contrary, these memories are (IF thereâs something going on with temptation/persuasion (more on that later) and The Book of Life) are ENTIRELY real. And the reason for that is highlighted in the very essay: each memory is tied to a physical record of it happening. The Book of Job; the Polaroid in â41, and Aziraphaleâs diaries. This is not to say that there arenât still gaps: where was the âIâm sorryâ dance of â41? If Aziraphale wasnât drinking in 2500 BC then when did he start? Just little things like this.
This is the thing: stories, words, are vital. The challenge that they gave the guy who did Sherlock (I canât remember his name Iâm sorry!) âitâs talked about in the X-Rayâ was to have words pop out in 4 different ways across S2. This a fun stylistic choice, but it also gives words narrative attention, so ties in with all this. Without God to narrate, narratives and accounts are left to the characters within the world. Itâs fun and important both. So is the spelling stuff. Maggie canât spell, neither can the demons. (She may be a demon herself âIâm not entirely convinced itâs this simple, tbh, but Aziraphaleâs miracle not working on her in ep5 is definitely a red flag.) Anyway â itâs also interesting.
With all this, my idea that Heaven/Metatron had been planning the aziracrow divorce from the beginning might mean theyâre tampering with The Book of Life âit also could mean that theyâre ABOUT to do something weird with Aziraphaleâs memories, or all these pieces are going to become very very helpful for Murielâs investigation.
I really do wonder what this role of records, memories and narratives will come to, but I have a feeling itâll bleed into s3.
Theme 3: Food
Crowley was the reason Aziraphale tried food in the first place. I just wanted to put that down because of course he was, but also it is deeply INSANE that he INTRODUCED AZIRAPHALE TO THE CONCEPT OF EATING. God, David was right. They really don't exist without each other.
This is kind of the point I make with food here: itâs a HUGE theme in s2, largely just to emphasise the fact that itâs powerful.
For some reason (jokey or otherwise) eccles cakes can âcalm you down.â
Aziraphale becomes significantly bonded to Crowley by eating the Ox in ep2. Later, Crowley is âas strong as an Ox." âfun little echo.)
They drink the same wine as always in â41 âthey share no wine in s2, just the sherry and whiskey respectively. They also donât share a meal, which seems interesting. I personally think that itâs to do with consumption being a metaphor for queer desire, and the absence of it being a sign of C/A being on âtheir own sideâ in s2. Crowley abandons temptation as Aziraphale abandons attempts to âsaveâ Crowley. â-Or it may mean something else!
Crowley drinks laudanum and it makes him go lala. It ALSO makes him turn tiny, then giant, and he does something kind âkind enough to get him dragged off to hell and tortured so badly that heâs asking for holy water as âinsuranceâ 40 years later.
That fucking oatmilk almond coffee. Okay. So if food is powerful, this has weight. From the colour of it being weird against the background to the fact (to quote my dear friend Jey) ânobody fucking drinks almond syrup!!â âIâm sure youâve see all this going around. Almonds are obviously very poison-coded, and considering the above point I smell something strange. (I donât believe it was quite a case of drugging per say, but more metaphor: Aziraphale is being tempted. Heâs being manipulated, and drawn back into the culty office world of heaven.)
So what we know here is that food is powerful. An important metaphor and force (especially for aziracrow.)
Theme 4: Resurrection
OKAY: so, this is the most original of my listing in these themes. I am so interested in this resurrection thing theyâve got going.
The Resurrectionist pub: where Gabriel and Beez come to their plan. We see that The Dirty Donkey is a lift to heaven (which NOT enough people are talking about) âso what about The Resurrectionist? What power does it hold as a space? Why is the legacy of Mr Dalrymple important?
Why did (wee) Moragâs eyes glow briefly? Is she a zombie now?
Zombies exist. We know this. Theyâre also tied to the concept of consumption, which is cool.
Heaven measures miracles by Lazarii.
Gabriel, in one of his flashes of prophecy, says: âthere will come a tempest (...) the dead will rise from their graves and wander the earth once more.â
These are all cool. Thematically, it seems that being raised from the dead is going to be something big. Iâm interested in this, considering that after Gabriel said the above mentioned prophecy my good friend Jey said âhold on, is this going to be about The Rapture?â
Now: we know that â668: Neighbour of the Beastâ was supposed to be set in America. Whether it actually is or not, I donât know, but I think that if it is about a second coming on American soil, The Rapture feels VERY pertinent. The dead are the first to rise and be with God in The Rapture, but all believers join them: and they join them permanently. In some versions, there is a period in which Christ rules the earth. All very fun and interesting prospects for s3!
Where this leaves us:
S2 is the âbridgeâ between 1 and 3, in Neilâs words. Itâs the âromantic fillingâ of the sandwich.
I would argue that some seriously tough bread started with âoh Crowley, nothing lasts forever,â but hey ho, thatâs the very ending of the season. I just want to talk about coded language/draw on what Iâve just said to talk about how weâre set up for the structures of s3:
Heaven is a CULT. A serious cult. From the (temptation) manipulation of the coffee, to the man at the pub calling Gabriel a âmasonâ âwhich Iâm assuming he means freemasonâ to the frankly INSANE smile on Michael Sheenâs face as the credits roll (also sickening lighting there)â they are a big threatening cult, and that is going to be important. I think itâll just get increasingly so.
FurFur and Shax have it OUT for the ineffable husbands. Like they are NOT fans. And they seem to also be buddies now so⊠not great news.
In The Scene </3 Crowley stops himself short of saying heâd like to spend eternity with Aziraphale, and instead asks him to âgo off together,â just like s1 âI think their language is going to develop hugely in s3. Itâll go back to being the space they âcarved out for themselves,â only further.
And finally: a bet. The last time we see Crowley, heâs in a car full of plants because heâs carrying âtheir sideâ away with him. I am willing to bet ânot that this is a hottake or anythingâ that itâll end, as it began: in a garden. S3 will end in the garden of their South Downs Cottage !!!
In the TFP Zombie Apocalypse AU, what would happen if during a rather intense raid or mission involving the dead, one of the kids quietly walks up to the bots privately to show them a fresh bite mark on there arm?
-Optimus feels defeated. He feels like he's failed another innocent soul and this time, someone so young. But for all the despair he's feeling, Optimus promises to stay with the kid until the very end, to keep them company and provide them the comfort they deserve until they... he can't bring himself to finish the sentence. He will express his sadness, his feelings of guilt, but he will stay strong for the child, because he knows that they need him. He tells them about Cybertron, the legends of old, weaving magnificent tales full of wonder and magic. He knows that he's only distracting them (and in certain extent, himself) but he does not want them to spend their last moments afraid. It's only afterwards that Optimus will allow himself to break down, to grieve.
-At first, Ratchet considers amputation of the arm. It's a fresh bite, it might not be too late. If this does not work, he still refuses to give up. He becomes determined, almost obsessed, with finding a cure and saving the kid. He can do it, he just needs to work harder, needs a little more time, more resources- It's only when the symptoms progress to a stage that any potential recovery is impossible that Ratchet breaks down, forced to accept reality. He hates himself, hates how despite all his proclaimed knowledge and skill as a medic, he still can't save them. He apologizes to the kid, tells them how sorry he is that he's so useless. Will stay with them till the end, making sure that they are comfortable and in as little pain as possible, and afterwards he doubles down on his research into a cure.
-For a few seconds, Bumblebee is in denial. This is not funny, stop that, you're not bitten, shut up, you're ok! But he's quickly forced to face the truth when he sees the expression on the kid's face. He races back to base and begs Ratchet to please, do something! Bee knows that there is no cure but he's not ready to accept it, still in denial about what's going on and what's going to happen. When Ratchet tells him that there is no cure, Bumblebee breaks down. He holds the kid close and he wails, begging them for forgiveness for not being able to protect them. Knowing that they only have a short while left before they succumb to the infection, Bee takes the kid out on a ride. It doesn't feel right for them to stay in base, in some sickbed and just waiting to die, so he turns on the radio and plays their favorite music the entire time. He only stops driving and lets them out after its over.
-Bulkhead feels powerless. He's used to problems he can confront and solve with his fists, to powering his way through any situation and using brute force to save the day. There's no fighting his way through this. There's no enemy he can beat that will save the kid. He can't do anything so help them, he's helpless to do anything but watch. Bulkhead talks to the kid, expresses his remorse but dares not yet to grieve, not while they are still alive because grief is for the dead and gone. So he asks them, is there anything they want to do? Maybe shoot one of his guns, blow up a building, or maybe just talk? Whatever they want, he'll do it. Anything so he won't be reminded of just how useless he's feeling. When the time is close, Bulkhead will put them out of their misery. They will die human and with the peace of mind that they won't hurt anyone.
-In a way, Arcee had always suspected that things would turn out this way. The people she care about, those she tries to protect, always seem to die the saddest deaths. Now the kid is just the latest in a long line of people that is probably going to grow even longer. It doesn't make this any easier though, maybe because she expected them to have more time. Arcee makes it clear that she's sad but stays strong and takes the kid to a location with a nice view. If they're lucky, maybe there's a sunset or a clear night sky. She will talk with them, really talk with them, honestly answer every question they have and open herself up in a way she's never done before. And then, she will ask them if they want her to put them out of their misery. If they don't want to, then she will just resume talking. But if they do... she will tell them just how much she'll miss them before ending them with a single shot. Afterwards, Arcee grieves the only way she knows, through violence and revenge, which manifests itself as her going out of her way to kill as many zombies as possible.
FAQ
What is this?
Itâs a Sam Wilson fan event.
Is there any pressure?
No pressure at all. Fill one prompt. Fill all the prompts on for the month. Do however many you please.
Can I fill more than one prompt with one piece of art/one fic?
Yes! You can fill one prompt with one piece of art or fic. You can try to fill all 30 prompts at once with one piece of art or fic. If you can fill every single prompt from every single day in one fill, thatâd be wild but itâs okay by the rules. You can do any number in between.
Are there any prizes for making anything for this event?
Just the satisfaction that you made something cool.
Should the work I make be Sam Wilson-centric?
Yes. You can make a gen work or a piece with any ship with Sam Wilson in it, but the main focus should be Sam Wilson.
How long will this event run?
It will run from September 1st to September 30th.
I heard there are badges I can use for each fill?
There will be! They will come out daily.
Do I have to post my fic for the prompt on the day of the prompt?
You can if you'd like, but it's okay if you post a piece on a day other than the day of the prompt.
RULES AND GUIDELINES
What are the guidelines for the event?
I will be borrowing some of this from the MYSU Valentineâs Day Bingo 2022 Guidelines, since they were fantastic.
For Everyone:
1. Remember to tag @samsseptember in the post as well as #samtember2023.
2. Please also tag the prompt youâre using (for instance, if the square is âRedwingâ, use â#redwingâ as one of your tags when posting about it on Tumblr).
3. If youâre uploading to AO3, please:
a ) Say somewhere which prompt youâre filling.
b ) Add it to The Samtember Collection (under Samtember2023).
For Artists:
1. Create at least one piece of new art that canât have been posted anywhere else before this.
2. All visual art forms are welcome:
a ) Gifsets or photosets, at least 3 gifs or photos.
b ) Aesthetic boards or moodboards, at least 4 images each.
c ) Drawing/painting, that is not a sketch.
d) Fan video.
e) Graphics edit.
For Authors:
1. At least 500 words.
2. Posted on Tumblr or AO3.
3. Can be part of a series, but should work as a standalone.
For Podficcers:
1. The podfic should at least be 10 minutes long.
2. It should be posted on either Tumblr or AO3.
3. The podfic can be of a fic made for the event, a fic not made for the event while still adhering to the prompt, or a notfic.
Things to be mindful of when creating:
For Sam
Avoid framing Sam only as a caretaker or emotional support for Bucky. Be mindful of Sam acting angry or aggressive in an out-of-character way and falling into the angry/sassy Black man trope (check out the MCU source material to help with character traits).
Avoid decentering Sam as a main character and refrain from focusing entirely on Bucky.
In art: avoid whitewashing Samâs skin and research drawing Black characters.
General disclaimer: Race affects every aspect of his life, including interacting with police/government and the white structures of the world when it comes to performing his duties as Cap and simply being a Black man that lives in the U.S.
Specific Tags:
Avoid tags in AO3 like âSam Wilson is a Giftâ and âSam Wilson is a Saintâ.
Have fun and we look forward to your Samtember 2023 works!
Note
2, 7, 10, 15, 16
greedily takes up five of the options
I'm actually going to answer these for both lokius and spideypool to be fair to what fandom you read for and also to what I'm reading for right now.
2. đ A fic youâve re-read several times
There's a clear theme in these.
i could show you by jilliancares
I think this was the first real gender-affirming trans porn I had ever read and kept on re-reading. It's so good. It's very hot and I love everything about the smut and the dynamics but it's also just - a trans guy talking about oral sex and his disappointing experiences with it and there's a lot of intimacy in the way that's handled. It's just very real so the fantasy of it is even realer. I have read this one many, many times.
Turnabout loop - Mirilya
The Mobius coochie fic. It's great. I could say that I love the idea of Loki using his magic for shapeshifting his partner in bed and the genderbending of it, which I do. It's also just hot. Objectively. I think there needs to be more fics with this exact thesis of Mobius getting eaten out. I support it.
7. đŻA fic that makes you think #writergoals
morning in the burned house by antivenom
Just a really stunning character study and piece of prose. It's such a complicated, nuanced approach to Wade Wilson as a character and his relationship with Spider-Man. It has my favorite approach to a backstory I've seen for in the fandom. This just really sits with him as a character and explores the side roads and back alleys of his brain and the reason he is who he is. It's beautiful. I think anything that sits with you afterward is something I am inspired by, and this sits with me.
The Shapeshifter's Guide to Butt Stuff by comrade_bucket
I just recommended the first part of this series (and the whole series is #writergoals) but this one is so conceptual, so out there, so fucking weird and strange and beautiful that every time I read it I'm struck at what a piece of art it is. The way this work addresses genderfludity, god-hood, the human experience, love, gender conformity, and compromise is just so wonderful. I would love to write something as strange and shocking and daring as this! Again, both installments of this series including The-Infinity-Year-Old Virgin are both something I love to re-read and also get inspired by every time. The endings on both of these are something I've taken notes on.
10. đœ A fic that isnât prose (poetry, text fic, etc.)
I got really into the Wickerman tag the other day and this AMV is one of my favorite things I've ever seen.
Lovely Day (Good as Hell) [Favid] periru3, Tafadhali
hare toss, check my nails, baby how you feeling? feeling good as hell!
15. đ A fic you wish you could display on your bookshelf
They're both by the same author, surprise. (I think it's funny that @primewritessmut wrote two masterpieces in my favorite genres.) I also have told them before that I would book bind them both, and I am extra serious about doing it for the second one.
Songs for the Zombie Apocalypse by zerospoons_onlyknives
I love zombies. They're my favorite horror genre and I have read and watched as much of it as possible but it's so rare to find the good stuff because no one goes far enough. (Prime goes farther.) It's dark, demented, violent, gloriously unwell and erotic. It's not a love story, it's something so much more interesting, and each chapter I got to read in advanced had more and more tangled in it. The ending is unbelievably glorious. It was one of those things that I was like "this feels written for me" and it wasn't (and it kind of was) but I enjoyed it so much. It deserves to be bound in a book that looks suspiciously like human skin.
Midori Sour - oprime
This is the hallmark rom-com bait and switch psychological thriller family drama slice of life romance of all time. It's so good. It really has no business being as good as it is. The idea is so fun and the dynamics are great and the setting and side-characters are so lived in but the underlayers of this. I want this book bound so I can just re-read sections and underline the lines that stick through onto the other side. I love this thing so much. It's so human and compelling and deliciously deep. The depth that Prime goes in on with this one is just unbelievable. I love it very much. I would bind it in green leather and put a little fruity drink in the middle of it and highlight the whole thing in a green neon with red on the cherries.
16. đ A fic that led to you making friends with the author
I think it's funny that these are both series.
Bad Things - wanderingflame
I was so, so obsessed with this when I first read it. I remember sitting in a car outside a thrift store just binging through it (and then I re-read it at least two times.) I also think @in-my-loki-feels is the first person I have ever asked to write inspired work for (and also, found out we both share the same feelings on inspired work lmao) because I was just so enchanted by this story. It's so fresh, thoughtful, compelling, and just the right hint of dark. Their passion for these characters and the nuanced groves of their natures is just - god, it's so good. We have a very "writers who like each other's work" friendship in a way I really appreciate.
gunpowder triology - periodicallypuzzled
It's rare for me to find a writer with such a personality through their work. I couldn't get enough of this series when I first read it - the humor, the personality, the characterization, the heart juxtaposition with the grit. I don't often say "I really want to know the person who wrote this" but I remember thinking that after reading that. @periodically-puzzled read something of mine and offered to exchange discord handles and after that we became friends. I should also re-read this, now that I'm thinking about it again.
#ask game#fic recs#lokius#spideypool#mailbox#dude I love that you asked so many it was great to go back and talk about some of the greats
