How to do Umrah on your own?
Umrah is the most blessed and rewarding pilgrimage to undertake. It is a profound and deeply personal experience. For many, it is a spiritual journey that keeps a significant amount of importance in their beliefs. At the same time, it's natural for Muslims to travel in groups. However, performing Umrah journey solo can offer an unparalleled choice for self-reflection and spiritual growth. Embarking on this sacred pilgrimage independently allows you to personalize your experience and engage deeply in the rituals. But, exploring alone needs more careful consideration to make sure you go on a safe journey and have a satisfying experience of your life.
Here we'll elaborate you on the question "How you can safely travel to Umrah as a solo pilgrim".
Practical Preparation
Equally important is practical preparation. Ensure your passport is useable for at least six months after your departure dates. Apply for a visa through an authorized travel agency or any online website well in advance. Consider taking vaccinations, which is depending on the Saudi government’s policy. Pack appropriate clothing, personal hygiene items, and a medical kit. Don't forget to carry a guidebook or app with detailed information about the rituals and prayers to recite.
Planning Your Travel
Booking Flights and Accommodation
Selecting the right flight and accommodation is vital. Also, booking flights in advance will get you the best package with discounted prices. Choose direct flights to Jeddah, if possible, to minimize travel fatigue and strain on your body. For accommodation, staying in the vicinity of Haram will help save you time and energy, allowing you to focus more on your worship. Compare hotels online and read reviews to find the best options within your budget.
Transportation within Makkah and Madinah
Navigating the cities can be challenging if you’re not familiar with them. Research transportation options from Jeddah to Makkah, such as buses, taxis, or private transfers. Once in Makkah, consider using the free shuttle services offered by some hotels to reach the Haram. In Madinah, most hotels are within walking distance of Masjid Nabawi, making it convenient to perform prayers and visit the Prophet’s Mosque.
Embrace Solitude and Reflection
Performing the Umrah as a solo offers you many opportunities for self-reflection and to worship without worrying about anything else. Take notes of the moments with solitude during your Umrah journey to renew your faith, commitment, and personal spiritual journey. Use this sacred time for prayer, and contemplation as you navigate the holy places and perform the rites of Umrah pilgrimage. Adopting privacy can improve your spiritual experience deeply and also your relation to your Allah Almighty (SWT).
Stay Safe and Informed
While performing Umrah as a solo make sure to stay safe from the dangers. Stay alert about the situation of your destination, involving any kind of health or security issues. Always keep the necessary documents and their copies for emergencies such as your passport, visa, and ID cards secure at all times. Stay in touch with your family, relatives, and friends back home, and share your experience with them.
Seek Guidance and Support
During your solo journey for Umrah, don't take a step back in seeking the guidance and help you need. Reach out to local authorities, travel agencies, or religious scholars for knowledge about any concerns you may have. Gua Hira' (1)
Tiba-tiba aku merindukannya, bunda Khadijah. Seperti apakah kehangatan jiwanya? Oh, Jabal Nur yang menyimpan jejak dan rahasia, beruntungnya dirimu pernah menjadi saksi kokohnya langkah bunda Khadijah.
Angin Makkah berhembus pelan. Aku melirik jam tangan.

You went, my friend.
I was halfway up from my sitting position for Maghrib with my phone in my right palm when the message came.
I sped read and immediately knelt down as I felt my eyes widened and my brain going into frenzy but I forced it to slow down so I could read the message one more time, to check if I have read it correctly.
I think my left palm clutched my sister's arm and I remember saying: "Oh my God" repeatedly.
My sister was concerned and I think she asked me why. As I held my phone out for her to read the message, I remembered my thumb could not stop moving.
While she read, my mind was going through a lot of thoughts in that few seconds.
"Where did this information come from?"
"Where can I get more information?"
"Who can I ask?"
"Facebook ada tak berita accident?"
Once Adik finished reading I rapidly texted my friend to ask more, but I think we were all just in shock and all I could repeatedly text was: "Oiii".
I could not talk anymore and I calm myself down enough to do my Maghrib. Was I able to khusyuk in that Maghrib? I can't remember...
I sat in silence again after prayer and I remembered my sister-in-law leaning toward my sister, I assumed to ask what happened. I think that is when I let some tears fall.
"Is this really true..."
Was all I could think about.
And then came the message that another friend would verify the news and informed us once she has it. So the waiting game began.
My best friends and I had arranged for a meet-up prior, and it was time to go. In the taxi, as much as I didn't want to talk, I think the driver's conversation was a needed distraction.
We were in mid-meal, when that "Salam guys" text came.
I had my phone ready.
"... typing"
Dila couldn't bear to read. I wanted to know the news. I waited for what felt like a long time only for the message to read:
"She really did not make it."
I thought I had gone over the initial shock.. But I guess this time since the news had been verified so this time, I felt my face scrunched up and I cried.
Cried in the taxi once I was alone, cried in the lift, cried in the bathroom, and I couldn't really sleep that night. I was thankful that I texted Asilah and planned for a meet-up, to see you for the last time.
I met with friends whom I have not seen for years, and I am glad I did. It was nice seeing them. It felt great having a support group, a place to share our grief. It gave me an outlet to share the sadness I felt and witnessed during the whole burial process. That play-by-play I did in our WhatsApp group was a good form of distraction.
* * *
Fad.. Life happened and we were not as closed as we used to be during our schooling days and that's okay.
You were trust-worthy and gave good advices. My last conversation with you was thanking you for your Makkah & Madinah highlights, as I was going through them in preparation for my pilgrimage.
Thank you for your friendship... It's time for you to rest, my friend.
