September 2024, central Camacha in Madeira. Did you know Camacha was recognised as a parish circa 1680? Although it lost that status in early XVIII century, it regained it circa 1738. Central Camacha sits at 700 metres above sea level. It is renowned for its Folklore, which to date makes several appearances mainly in Santa Cruz county. It is said that the first football match ever in the whole of Portugal was held in Camacha, more precisely at Largo da Achadinha in 1875.

Setembro de 2024, centro da Camacha na Madeira. Sabia que a Camacha foi reconhecida como freguesia por volta de 1680? Embora tenha perdido este estatuto no início do século XVIII, recuperou-o por volta de 1738. O centro da Camacha encontra-se a 700 metros acima do nível do mar. É reconhecida pelo seu Folclore, que até à data tem feito várias aparições principalmente no concelho de Santa Cruz. Dizem que o primeiro jogo de futebol de sempre em todo o país de Portugal foi disputado na Camacha, mais precisamente no Largo da Achadinha, em 1875.

This section of Levada dos Tornos starts at Caminho Municipal dos Salgados bellow central Camacha, & takes you to Curral dos Romeiros above Funchal. It can take you to Monte or Botanical gardens cable cars, as well as the toboggan/wicker sledge/basket rides, after coming off the levada onto a trail however, we didn't go quite as far this time around. It takes approximately 4 hours at a semi comfortable pace. There are no high drops & only a couple of narrow passages along the way, making this trail family friendly/suitable for children. BEWARE of the tunnel bellow Nogueira neighbourhood as it gets shorter on the Funchal side, this can be noticed by comparing the height of the tunnel to the height of the door on the building right next to it in 1 of the pictures. You'll need flashlights or a bright light from a phone. I'm 6 foot 4 & I had to squat/shuffle out for the last 25 meters. Buses to Camacha can be boarded outside Funchal cable car bus station, bus service number 77 or 129. To reach or come from Curral dos Romeiros at the other end, there's a couple of bus stops bellow the levada, bus service 29. There are more clips & aerial footage taken allong this levada to be published on separate posts. There was barely any litter along this stretch, & we hope it is kept that way 😊😊

Este troço da Levada dos Tornos começa no Caminho Municipal dos Salgados, abaixo do centro da Camacha, e acaba no Curral dos Romeiros, acima do Funchal. Porém também vai até aos teleféricos do Monte ou do Jardim Botânico, bem como aos passeios de tobogã/trenó de vime/cesto, depois de sair da levada para um trilho, no entanto, desta vez não fomos tão longe. Demora aproximadamente 4 horas a um ritmo semiconfortável. Não há quedas altas e apenas algumas passagens estreitas ao longo do caminho, tornando este trilho familiar/adequado para crianças. CUIDADO com o túnel por baixo do bairro da Nogueira, pois é mais baixo no lado do Funchal, isso nota-se comparando a altura do túnel com a altura da porta do prédio logo ao lado numa das fotos. Vai precisar de lanternas ou de luz forte de um telefone. Tenho 1,93m e tive de me agachar para percorrer os últimos 25 metros. Os autocarros para a Camacha podem ser embarcados na estação rodoviária do teleférico do Funchal, serviço de autocarro número 77 ou 129. Para chegar ou vir do Curral dos Romeiros no outro extremo, existem algumas paragens de autocarro abaixo da levada, serviço de autocarro 29 . Existem mais clips e imagens aéreas tiradas ao longo desta Levada que serão publicadas separadamente. Quase não houve lixo nenhum neste troço, e esperamos que assim continue 😊😊
