falling | joel miller x fem!oc (part iv)
MINIMUM VIABLE HOPE—The smallest form of belief, enough to go on.
summary: It's a day out on the town, and Jackson has much more to offer than just a home and traded goods. Perspective, comfort, and a nice helping of lovesickness—all of which catch Joel's eye.
a/n: did you know you can only mention fifty people in a post? that's just plain boring. and no more than five people in a comment? RUDE. and did anyone else see that SNL episode with Pedro and his hip thrusts, and just fucking die? yeah, me too. also - i had so much FUN writing this chapter, the feels, the angst, the yearning, the loooove. thank you all so much, and I hope you like this long ass chapter!
Tumblr media
Joel didn’t like looking in the mirror for too long.
It wasn’t vanity—never had been—but it showed too much. Told the truth in ways he didn’t much care for. The deep lines, the greying scruff, the years stacked on top of each other like weathered wood, each one heftier than the last. He preferred the delusion, the easy forgetfulness that came with living day to day, not thinking too hard about the good ol' days or how much he wished time hadn't gotten his hands on him. But today?
Well, today he damn near felt good in his own skin.
The clothes, that Leela generously offered, helped. Goddamn, they smelled amazing. Fresh. Worn but not ragged. The denim was sturdy but soft, the fleece underlayer warm and snug. The shearling jacket fit like something out of another life—one where he had more time, where he cared about how he looked. Even his boots, though a little tight, made him feel like he was standing taller. He couldn't even pronounce the brand of the damn thing—French apostrophes, all that fancy bullshit—but whatever it was, it smelled nice, felt nice.
Oh, for sure: Ellie was bound to give him shit. Tommy even more so.
But really... he couldn't give a flying fuck. Today he felt like he was Joel from Texas again. Like he wasn’t some worn-down relic with a bad knee and a worse past.
On the note of Leela, the big, white house across the street was officially back in order. Finally functional after hours of wrestling with the complex fucking wiring, one of the few cons of such a massive home. Not that it had been much of a fight after the resident brainiac showed up—Leela had already pinpointed the problem in minutes and quietly rattled it off like it was second nature. All he had to do was be her muscle, follow along and weld it. It was more attractive than any love or sex this world had to offer.
Catching his reflection again in the front mirror of Leela's home, Joel ruffled the front of his hair, combing down the longer strands at the back, brushing at his jaw, at the scruff that had grown heavier these days, adjusting the collar, smoothing out the sleeve.
He hadn’t meant to get this caught up in it, hadn’t meant to feel this—what, good? Yeah, good. Christ, what a joke.
He’d just turned to grab Maya's baby blanket off the couch, the breathy voice from the stairs made him stiffen.
“Jesus, Joel.”
He looked up.
Leela was halfway down the staircase, cradling Maya against her chest. She wasn’t wearing the usual loose nightgowns or sweats she’d holed herself up in for months. No, this time, she was in clean, fitted jeans, and a long-sleeved shirt in that same soft blue he liked on her. Her hair was brushed smooth down her back, tucked behind her ears, not tangled and loose like usual.
For the first time, he really saw her. Not just the soft, exhausted mother. Not just the lonely woman who never let anyone too close. Her. Tall and breathtaking. Arch calves, thighs, the swell of her hips, the softness at her love handles that hadn’t quite gone away after childbirth.
And because life had a twisted sense of humour, because the moment was already damn near suffocating from seeing her, she had to go and hit him with—
“I thought you were my dad from the back.”
Joel took that one like a sucker punch straight to the gut. He had to fight the instinct to wince, to let it show. At least she didn’t say granddad, he reasoned, trying to patch up what little was left of his dignity. Small mercies.
He exhaled, fixing his fist into the coat pockets, forcing himself to smirk. “Yeah? He must’ve been one hell of a good-lookin’ guy.”
Leela huffed out a laugh, resting the baby’s cheek against her shoulder. “He loved suede. A huge show-off.”
“Well,” he drawled, tugging at the sleeve, “that's where we disagree. At least the man had taste.”
“He also loved polka-dots,” she pointed out.
He clicked his tongue. “I take the fifth, thanks.”
That earned him another laugh, light and easy, like he’d actually said something funny. He didn’t think too hard about how that was probably all he was to her—just some seasoned guy lending a hand. A reliable acquaintance. Nothing more, nothing less.
But then, feeling excluded, Maya let out a breathless little giggle—one of those soft, airy sounds she always seemed to save just for him—and he feared for whatever was left of his soul, crushing.
Maya was grinning up at him, tiny fists wriggling in her mittens, legs kicking against Leela’s side, looking like a baby worth a thousand pictures in a camera. Bundled up in a white cotton onesie, all warm and snug, her beanie perched on her head with those stupid little ears sticking up like a baby bear. Everything was a size too big like she was still growing into the world.
Joel clutched at his chest, mock-staggering back. “You’re breakin’ my goddamned heart, doll,” he murmured, unable to resist a toothy grin, as he held out his arms for her. “Look at you. C’mere, beautiful girl. G'morning.”
Maya squirmed excitedly, tiny mitten-clad hands grasping the air, and as Joel habitually pressed a warm kiss into her cheek, tempted to steal four more, he caught a glimpse of the gold ‘L’ embroidered on the chest of the onesie. Leela’s old hand-me-down that had survived the test of time.
“Lost an eardrum trying to get her into that,” Leela admitted.
She shook her head but passed Maya over, cracking her knuckles absently as she stretched out her arms, unease becoming her. He adjusted Maya against his side, settling her little weight against him. That was her seat for the rest of the day today.
Then, as if debating something, she asked, “Do you really think it’s fine? Bringing her outside? I'm worried she'll fall sick or...”
Joel arched a brow. “I told you. You’re not goin’ there without me, and Maya’s not goin’ anywhere without either of us.”
Leela chewed on that, still unsure.
Maria had been insistent about her showing up, about giving her insight into the lightning harvester with workers—the innovation she’d designed, the one they were planning to station right outside the dam. The whole quadrant was already in progress, groundwork was being laid, and people getting involved. The biggest project Jackson had taken on in a long while.
Even after Joel had warned Maria that Leela was banged up and still on the mend, she'd cherry-picked the argument and cornered him by labelling him an 'overbearing son of a bitch who was getting on her last nerve'. He'd essentially shut up after that since Maria still scared him witless.
"Look, I've got the kid. You do your thing," Joel said, adjusting Maya as she wriggled against him. "I'll just hang back at the square with Tommy and the rest, stay close by. I'll check up on you after."
Leela pressed her lips together, clearly thinking it over.
Joel tried his hand at persuasion. “Y'know, you've been holed up here for three months.”
Leela blinked. Like she was only just realizing it. Her brows furrowed, fingers lifting as she counted—one, two, three. Each number dropped a new rock in Joel’s stomach.
“More, actually.” Her voice was distant like she was doing the math in real time. “I delivered Maya at home. Nearly... eight months now.”
Eight months. Eight months since she’d stepped beyond these walls, since she’d breathed fresh air, and been around people.
He hadn’t let himself think about it before—hadn’t wanted to—but now the image was there, unshakable. Leela, alone. Covered in sweat, spasming in pain. Bloody, weak, feeling like she was dying, like the walls were closing in, like no one in the world could help her. The raw struggle of it.
His stomach turned. No—Maria would’ve made sure she had someone. She had to have. Someone must've heard her.
Joel was aware of what that kind of loneliness did to a person. How it made you shrink, made you start believing that was all there was—that the world outside didn’t need you anymore. And she’d stayed in here. For eight goddamn months. That wasn’t living.
He cleared his throat, forcing the thought away. No use stewing in it.
“Well,” he muttered, his hand reaching for the door handle, “’nuff said. Let’s get this show on the road.”
X
People in Jackson knew Joel Miller.
Same as Maria. Same as Tommy. They knew him for his angry brow, the way his mouth rarely broke from that grim, set line. They knew the sharpness in his eyes, the way he cut through a room without saying a word. They knew he was a hardass bastard. He didn’t make small talk. Didn’t go out of his way to be liked. He knew he scared off plenty of folks just by standing there, arms crossed, expression set like granite. And that suited him just fine. People left him be.
So seeing him now—walking through town cradling a baby instead of a rifle, with a woman most thought was a ghost at his side—that was gonna be the topic of the damn day.
He could feel the looks, hear the murmurs, the way conversations stuttered as he passed. And he did not give a shit. Let ‘em talk. Let ‘em wonder.
It wasn’t like he was breaking news—his neighbours saw him come and go from her big white house as he pleased. Enough times that people could put two and two together. But this? Out in broad daylight, baby in tow? Now what the hell was going on?
Joel wasn’t the kind of man people expected to be carrying a baby. Much less one that looked at him like he hung the damn moon. And yet, here was Maya, snug against his chest, her tiny fingers curled into his fleece collar, drooling on his coat like it belonged to her.
And Leela—well. She was another matter entirely. She wasn’t just quiet. She was tense. She kept close, but not close enough to touch. Her shoulders were drawn up, her hands flexing and unflexing like she was trying to shake off the feeling of being watched.
And it wasn’t hard to guess why.
People hadn’t seen her in months. Half of Jackson had probably forgotten she even existed. The other half had started whispering about why. Joel had heard it in passing, plenty of rumours. Theories. That she was still sick. That she was holed up with her baby because she was too ashamed to be seen alone. That she was broken, not quite right in the head.
He knew better. He knew she was just trying to get by. Trying to put herself together while holding onto a child that didn’t feel quite like hers yet. And this? Being out here? This was the most out of her comfort zone she’d been in a long time.
Joel kept a steady pace, letting Leela take in what she hadn’t seen in months. He pointed things out as they walked—the grocery store with the fresh carrots now, thanks to the greenhouse. The bar with the good music. The repair shop he visited often. The little barbecue place that always smelled so mouthwatering it was damn near criminal.
He did it all for her. To keep her focused on something else—something that wasn’t the way people watched her. Wasn’t the way she was already winding herself up, bracing for something bad that wasn’t coming.
Joel kept a close eye on her, shifting Maya in his arms, pretending not to notice the way her breathing went uneven. The way she stiffened every time someone got too close. The way she gripped Joel’s elbow a little tighter like she had to remind herself he was still there.
Then, like it was nothing, like this was any other day, he muttered, “Y’ever had barbecue before?”
Leela blinked, like the question startled her. “Yeah?”
“Yeah?” He echoed with a smirk, shifting Maya higher in his arms who was listening to his voice drum in his chest. “That didn’t sound real confident.”
She let out a breath, still gripping his jacket tight. “I have, just… not in a very long time.”
“Well,” he drawled, eyes on the path ahead like this was already settled, “when you’re done with work, I’m takin’ you out. Get you a nice smoked brisket. A big slice of pecan pie with cream. How 'bout it?”
Leela glanced at him, agape. “I don’t... you don’t have to—”
“I know,” he cut in. “I want to.”
She didn’t say anything. A moment later, he felt her hand slip lower, brushing against his wrist. Just a light touch, nothing much. But Joel knew what it meant. The world around her was too much, too fast, too loud. Drowning in the noise of it all.
So, soft and low, he asked, “D’you wanna head inside for a bit?”
Leela barely hesitated. Just nodded once, fast, reaching for Maya like she needed something to anchor herself.
But Maya wasn't having it at all. She whined a stubborn noise, little hands grasping at Joel’s coat, face burrowing into the material, refusing to be handed off when she had just gotten cosy.
And maybe Joel imagined it—but he thought he saw something in Leela’s eyes splinter, that little rejection cutting deeper than it should’ve. A flicker in her dark eyes she buried quick. It looked a hell of a lot like hurt.
But she didn’t say anything. Didn’t react. Just let her hands fall, face blank and turned for the closest door.
Joel followed without a word, close enough, an arm outstretched around her, never touching, his presence simply a buffer between her and the rest of the world.
Inside, it was quiet. The clothing store, he quickly realized. The shelves were full but mismatched, stocked with whatever could be traded, salvaged, or repurposed. Nothing had price tags—Jackson ran on barter. Jackets, boots, canned food, and old records. Everything was up for negotiation. You talked it out with the shopkeep and settled on a fair deal.
Leela didn’t say a word. Just let out a slow, shuddering breath, stepping into a corner aisle, hidden away, and pressing her slick palms against the wooden shelf.
Joel watched her quietly, stroking Maya's back. Eight months locked up in that house, barely speaking to a soul. Now, she is back in the thick of it, remembering how to breathe in open air. No wonder, she looked like she was trying to find her footing. It made sense; people forgot how to be around people.
It was something he'd seen before. The way a person stepped out of the dark after too long, how the world suddenly felt like it could swallow them whole. Some folks got jumpy. Some shut down. Leela was somewhere in between—standing still, silent, stiff as a board, like she was trying to keep herself from bolting.
He’d seen that before, too.
Her fingers curled into the edge of the shelf at her back, grip tightening, knuckles white. She shut her eyes, breathing slow, deliberate—like she was trying to disappear inside herself. Trying to access some space within herself where the world wasn’t pressing in on her.
Yeah. He knew that look all too well now. She was trying not to cry.
Joel shifted his weight, glancing down at Maya, who was blissfully unaware, busy gumming the edge of a scarf she’d pulled off the shelf.
He cleared his throat. “Hey.”
Leela flinched—not much, just a little twitch of her shoulders—but it was enough to tell him that, for a second, she’d forgotten where she was. She blinked, pulling back from wherever she’d gone in her head, and looked at him.
Joel didn’t do the whole let's-address-this-nonsense, so he reached for the first thing that might pull her back. He grabbed an old record from the shelf and held it up. “Wanna put that fancy record player to use?”
Her expression softened instantly. She reached for the record, fingers tracing the edges like she was handling something precious. He eventually noticed the label—The Beach Boys, Wild Honey. What was with him, her and the sixties music?
“I have this one,” she mumbled.
An unsurprising turn of events. “’Course you do.” Joel sighed, sliding it back onto the shelf. "Hard to spoil a rich girl.”
She huffed out a laugh, tired, but at least it was real. She picked up a cloudy snow globe next, giving it a shake, eyes tracking the upending snow inside. “Don’t care for money anymore.”
Joel watched her, watched the way her fingers moved over the glass, trying to wipe away the dust. The way her shoulders had started to relax, just a little. He figured now was a good time for a distraction.
He tipped his chin at her. “You’re sittin’ on a gold mine, darlin'. You got salt. Basil or whatever.”
Her head tilted. "Seasoning makes me rich?"
"You ever eaten twenty years’ worth of QZ ration packs?" He scoffed, thumbing through the record covers. "Tryin’ to remember what real food tastes like while chewing expired crap they call 'dehydrated bolognese'?"
She actually laughed at that—not a breathy little huff, but a real laugh, short and amused. Then her eyes picked up that spark, a sharpness brightening her. “I make my own salt, actually. It’s a chemical reaction. It's fascinating, the sedimentation from caustic soda and—”
Joel lifted a hand to interrupt her, making a 'whoosh' motion over his head. “Alright, you lost me at ‘chemical.’ But if you got some to spare, I'd love to start saltin' my eggs in the morning.”
Her grin widened, but before she could respond, the door clattered open.
Maria swept in like a windstorm, hardly stepping inside, just enough to hold the door open. Clipboard in hand, she scanned the shelves, eyes flicking from one thing to the next, already onto whatever task she had next.
When she finally spotted Leela, she barely paused. “C’mon, kid, people are waiting for you. Let’s go.”
Leela stiffened, a shallow breath catching in her throat.
Joel caught the way her fingers tightened around the snow globe. The way her gaze flickered toward the door, then away just as fast—like she couldn’t look at it too long like it was something too bright, too overwhelming. She had just started breathing again.
He was about to say something—tell Maria to give her a damn minute, at least—but Leela nodded at her before he could get a word out. “I’ll be right there.”
But he saw the way her throat worked, how her hands wouldn’t quite let go of the shelf behind her. Then, she glanced back at him. A flicker. Hesitation. Like she was searching for something—a push, a reason to stall.
Joel had no goddamn clue what to do with that. Flash her a thumbs-up? Offer some dopey, generic shit like, “You got this”? None of it seemed right.
Maya—still happily oblivious, still gnawing on that damp, probably filthy scarf—grinned up at her mother with a gurgle, all gums and trouble. Her small hand finally reached out to her mama like her own little vote of confidence.
Leela’s expression softened, melting at that. She pressed a kiss to Maya's mitten, cupped her cheeks, and pressed another kiss to her head, lingering for a moment, breathing her in. “Don’t miss me too much, baby girl.”
And Joel—who was just holding the kid, who had nothing to do with that kiss—felt it all the way to his goddamn toes, until he curled them tight.
His throat closed when Leela straightened, and before he could react, she reached out, squeezing his shoulder. A quick thing, warm, shocking and grounding, there and gone.
“Take care of her, Joel,” she murmured.
She didn’t wait for a response. Didn’t hesitate this time. Just turned and walked toward the door, already steeling herself for whatever was waiting outside. Maria scarcely gave Joel a second glance as she hooked an arm around Leela’s shoulder, guiding her down the street, toward the dam.
Joel let out a slow breath through his nose, shifting Maya in his arms. Take care of her. Like that was even a question.
X
So, this was it. Joel hadn’t done something like this in a long time.
Running errands. Moving through town without it being about work, about survival, about making sure no one was about to freeze or starve. Just walking, going slow, letting himself ease into the rhythm of a day.
It was stupid how much he liked it. Maybe it was Maya in her room that was his arms, the warmth of her little body tucked up against him, the soft sighs and quiet sounds she made as she drifted in and out of sleep on his chest. Maybe it was the feeling of just being—going from place to place with no rush, no urgency, no reason to keep his hand near a weapon. It had been a while since he felt this liberated.
And yet, for all that, it was also the most uncomfortable he’d ever been. Because everywhere he went, people noticed him.
Or more specifically, they noticed her.
Maya was the newest baby in town, and in a place like Jackson—where everyone kept track of every fucking thing—that meant she was an instant celebrity.
It started at the main square. Joel had barely stepped inside before an older woman behind the counter lit up, clasping her hands together. “Oh, well, would you look at that.” She leaned forward, peering at Maya like she was a new puppy. “Aren’t you just the prettiest little thing?”
Joel braced. He was never good at shit like this—casual conversation, polite interactions. But he was prepared to nod, maybe mutter something noncommittal. Didn’t get the chance.
Before he could step away, the woman moved in.
“Can I see her?” She was already reaching like she might touch her, and instinct had Joel stepping back, moving Maya’s weight against his chest, his free hand flexing at his side.
The handsy woman noticed, laughing lightly. “Don’t worry, hon, I won’t take her from you.” But then she looked up, past Maya and her face dropped like a corpse wearing boots. “Oh. Joel.”
Yeah. Exactly. People never approached him. They let him pass, they let him do what he needed to do, and they didn’t ask for more than what was necessary. But now? Now he had her snug to his chest, and people suddenly thought they could get in his space, that they could smile at him like he was one of them.
“Right,” Joel muttered, clearing his throat. He took a step back, putting more space between them. “Gotta—uh. Got things to do.”
And he left before she could say anything else.
But it kept happening. Like having a baby made you instantly likeable. Erased everything that people deemed you unlikeable for.
A pair of young women on the street whispered to each other behind their hands. The Miller baby. Even some guy he didn’t know—a carpenter or a repairman or something—told over his shoulder to his friend while passing him, “Is that the little Miller baby?”
He didn’t answer. It wasn’t. But he hated how the words stuck to his skin, how they lingered. Feeding him false truths.
Maya, for her part, handled the attention in the same way she handled everything. She stared, wide-eyed, for a few seconds before burying her face in his chest, hiding against him.
Which—fair. Joel had the same damn instinct.
After a while, he just stopped slowing down, stopped making eye contact, and stopped acknowledging the people trying to grab his attention. By the time he hit the shop that traded in home goods, his patience was running thin.
He bartered for his coffee first. Priorities. He was low on supply, and he didn’t feel right starting a morning without it. Then, a stop at the shelf where he found some candles. The kind that a hifalutin name, like lavender or some other flower he couldn’t name. He wasn’t proud of what he’d had to trade to get them, but if they helped Leela sleep, he figured it was worth it.
Then, while shifting the baby bag on his shoulder, he saw it—some worn-down, wooden playthings on one of the shelves, a sad little collection of toys no one had much use for.
The kid had nothing. Leela didn’t seem to know enough to engage her in play. Honestly, Maya’s biggest laughs came from him, from just seeing him come in through the door and the way he bounced her when no one was looking. She didn’t have a stuffed animal to chew on, a rattle to shake, nothing. That sat wrong with him.
He reached out, fingers brushing over a carved horse with rounded edges. But before he could test it in his palms, Maya twisted in his arms, a tiny frown forming on her face.
The warning signs.
Joel sighed. “Ah, shit. Really, sweetheart?”
The fussing started slow—grunts, little unhappy noises, fidgeting with her mittens. It was hunger, he knew that much, and he hadn’t exactly planned on stopping somewhere good for it.
He glanced around, eyes landing on the worst place he could think of to feed a baby. He looked up to the sky instead, hoping for some cosmic assistance. Test him, test him, and test him again.
The fucking bar.
Well, then. It should be empty at this time of day. He'll take what is given.
Joel stepped in, scanning the dimly lit space for judgmental stares, the door swinging shut behind him. No one. It smelled like old wood and stale beer, the kind of place that felt settled into itself, like it had been standing for a hundred years and would stand for a hundred more. Even Tommy was behind the counter, rummaging through shelves, looking for something that clearly wasn’t there.
Joel exhaled sharply and shook his head. “Caught you at the right time.”
Tommy barely glanced up. “Look who it is. Papa Joel.” Then he did look, properly this time, and his smirk widened. “And look at you. Hell, you wearin’ cologne?”
Joel grunted, shifting Maya higher in his arms. “Shut up.”
“Not my fault you look—” Tommy gestured vaguely at all of him, “—like you popped outta Sears catalogue.”
Joel scowled. The swanky clothes. Right. But leave it to Tommy to make a damn thing of it.
Instead of answering, he settled onto a stool, already halfway to getting Maya’s bottle ready. She'd gone quiet, watching him move, which was never a good sign. Not for long, anyway.
Joel gently adjusted her in the crook of his arm, tucking the bottle against her lips, and that was it. The instant it was him feeding her, the second she got comfortable, her hands started roaming. She did this thing every single time. Feeling. Grabbing. Claiming.
And today, like always, they landed on the scar on his wrist. That big, pale line that ran jagged up his wrist into his forearm, from a blade that had nearly done more than nick him. A raider that he'd shivved in less than two seconds once the bleeding started.
In cruel irony, Maya was obsessed with it. She smoothed her tiny mitten over it, again and again, like she was trying to figure it out, her hand bare speck against the scar. Then she started digging her little hand into it, gripping it like she could peel it off him like it was something separate from his skin.
If Joel took his arm away when she got her claws in, her hands floated after it, waiting. A small whine, and she even gave up on the bottle.
“What?” he asked her, a single brow arched. “Aren't you hungry?”
She moved her head when he tried to push the sipper against her lips. Little smartass. A small, give-it-back-coo, brows furrowed, fists still waiting within her mittens. He missed seeing those little fingers already.
“Yeah, yeah. I ain’t goin’ anywhere, baby girl,” he sighed, letting her have his hand again. His voice was barely above a rasp, more to himself than anything. Not like she could understand, anyway. But talking to her—talking at her—had become something natural. Like breathing.
Immediately, she latched onto it again, tiny fingers curling around the scar like it belonged to her. Just let it happen. Couldn’t do a damn thing with her around. She had all his attention.
The silence between them stretched, like something Joel could settle into. Maya kept her hold on him, even as she finished eating, even as her round eyelids drooped with sleep.
His free hand, the one that had been absently nursing the cold whiskey glass, came up to trace down her nose. That tiny little twitching nose. She scrunched it at the sensation, gave the smallest little sigh—then she was out. Just like that.
Ahead, Tommy took a sip of his drink, still watching. Not saying anything. Not yet.
Then, after a beat, he sighed. “So, you’re really gonna do this?”
Joel blinked, caught mid-motion, his fingers coming up against the cool glass of his drink. He knew what Tommy's 'this' implied, he didn't even have to point it out. Joel hadn’t thought about it, not in words. Not in the way Tommy was asking. But the question hung there between them, waiting to be acknowledged.
His first instinct was to scoff. Shake his head. Deflect. Like he always did.
But instead, he just sat there.
Maya was still curled against him, warm and impossibly small. Her fingers had loosened in sleep, no longer gripping his wrist so fiercely, but every now and then, she’d twitch, like she was reaching for him even in dreams. Like she knew exactly where she belonged, in the arms that were always ready to catch her.
Joel swallowed, jaw working, eyes fixed on the grain of the counter. He could feel Tommy watching him, waiting.
Then came the shrug. That half-assed, useless shrug. A non-answer, because he wasn’t ready to say it out loud.
Tommy snorted, shaking his head. “Bullshit.”
“Ain’t that simple. You know how it is with her mom.” The words came out rougher than Joel intended like he was trying to shove them between himself and whatever his shitty brother was about to say next.
Tommy, of course, wasn’t buying it. He leaned against the bar, arms folded, giving Joel that look—the one that said he was already ten steps ahead, already seeing straight through the seven layers of crap. Joel hated that damn look.
“It’s already simple,” Tommy said, voice even. “You just don’t wanna admit it.”
Joel scowled, shifting Maya higher in his arms, adjusting her like it was nothing. Like she wasn’t the thing anchoring him in place.
“The hell does that mean?”
Tommy huffed a laugh, shaking his head. Then he just gestured—a lazy flick of his fingers toward Maya, toward the way she was curled into Joel’s chest, tiny and warm and completely at home.
It made Joel pause. The way Tommy was looking at him. The way he didn’t say what he meant, just let the silence speak for itself.
Joel swallowed, jaw tightening.
“It means you already decided,” Tommy finally said. “You’re just waitin’ on someone else to say it first, you pussy.”
Joel’s fingers curled tighter around his drink. A muscle jumped in his jaw. Because Tommy wasn’t wrong. He fucking hated that Tommy wasn’t wrong.
This was what he did. This was how it always went. With Ellie. With Sarah. He didn’t decide—he just let it happen. Let them carve out their space in his life, let them claim him before he ever had the guts to admit it. Because once you said it—really said it—that was it. No taking it back. No pretending you could walk away.
And Maya… she was already there. Already in. And fuck. Tommy must’ve caught the shift in his expression, because his posture eased, his voice dropping into something quieter, something real.
“Y’know,” he said, softer this time. “I’ve missed seein’ you like this.”
Joel exhaled sharply through his nose. “Like what?”
Tommy tilted his head, studying him. “Like you still give a damn.”
Joel scoffed. “That’s real cute, Tommy.”
“I’m serious.”
And Joel knew he was. Could hear it in the way Tommy’s voice had lost its usual sharpness, in the way he wasn’t teasing anymore.
Tommy wasn’t just looking at him now—he was seeing him.
The way Joel had melted into this. How he hadn’t put her down, hadn’t even tried. How his hand, scarred and mangled, still rested against the small of Maya’s back, gently rubbing circles as if he needed to make sure she was still there.
Joel looked away. Something crawled up his spine, sharp and unnameable. He didn’t like being seen. Not like this. Not even by Tommy. So he went for the easiest thing—the simplest way to cut the tension.
A half-hearted mutter. A low, unconvincing, “Yeah, well.”
Tommy’s smirk returned, slow and knowing. “Poetic,” he drawled.
Joel shook his head, finally taking a drink. “You talk too damn much.”
Tommy chuckled, tapping his fingers against his glass. “Yeah, well,” he mimicked before his voice softened again. “You don’t gotta say it, Joel.” He gestured toward Maya, still curled against his chest, safe, home. “You’re already doin’ it. Even if you got fuckin’ old.”
“Guess I had to, didn’t I?” he muttered, adjusting Maya against his chest, making sure her head rested easy against his chest.
Tommy didn’t argue. Didn’t need to. They both knew the truth of it.
Joel had aged in ways Tommy never would, in ways no one who hadn’t lived what he lived could understand. His life had been gunpowder, dirt and blood. But still—there was something about this, about sitting here, not rushing anywhere, not killing anything, not surviving, just existing.
Something about her. She had her little hands on his shirt, curled tight in sleep, and he knew without a doubt that when she woke up, she'd reach for him again.
Yeah, this was what getting old was.
X
It wasn’t so abnormal anymore, Joel thought, being here like this. A weekend evening, in nice clothes, at a restaurant, beer in hand, sitting around a table with family. Nothing left to rock the boat.
For a long time, this kind of thing had felt impossible. Something for other people. Other lives. Even in Jackson, even after all these years, he still sometimes caught himself expecting the old rhythm—always waiting for something to go wrong.
But here he was. Sitting in a booth at the barbecue joint, letting the warmth of the moment settle in. Maria was talking a mile a minute, Tommy was stretched out beside her, looking half in disbelief, and across from him—Leela cradling Maya, quiet as ever.
Joel took a slow sip of his beer, tearing his eyes off her, half-listening as Maria went off, excitement lighting up her face.
“—seriously, I’ve never seen anything like it,” she was saying, gesturing so wildly she nearly knocked over Tommy’s drink. “Fixed the whole irrigation backup in minutes, Joel! Got the system running smoother than it ever has, and on top of that—this little Einstein somehow managed to work out a whole fucking ration adjustment in the same damn hour.”
Leela’s face went warm. She waved a hand, dismissing it. “It wasn’t that complicated. The whole system just needed a pressure bypass to reduce cavitation in the main feed lines. And the rationing—honestly, it was just a matter of optimizing caloric allotments based on intake efficiency per household.”
A stunned hush.
Tommy blinked. Joel just stared in amazement. Maria narrowed her eyes like she was trying to do the math in her head.
“Right,” Tommy finally muttered, dragging his drink closer to safety. “I totally knew what all that meant.”
Joel huffed a laugh, shaking his head. And a little proud of her. “Christ.”
Leela frowned, looking between them. “It's all just calibration.”
Maria snorted, nudging Tommy. “I think that just proved her point.”
She was surpassing expectations with Maria fuckin' Miller. That had got to count for something. It was rare, too, to watch her this spirited, this excited. Even rarer that Tommy wasn’t the loudest one at the table.
"Well," Tommy said, smirking as he raised his glass. "Guess it's good to have a genius in your corner sometimes."
Joel smirked too, but his gaze flickered sideways again, back to Leela. He couldn't help himself to another look, and another, and another. Total headcase conduct.
But she wasn’t looking at any of them. She sat beside him, holding Maya close, not engaging much, just keeping her eyes down, drifting between the door and Maya in her bouncing lap. Every now and then, she’d offer a thin, polite smile—one of those distant ones, not real, not reaching her eyes. Present, but not fully there.
Joel noticed it all. The way she sat just a little too stiff, the way her fingers fidgeted lightly against Maya’s back. The way her shoulders didn’t fully relax, even though she was surrounded by people she trusted. She was clearly still agitated with something. Maybe the attention? The restaurant? The smell of the food? Perhaps Maya? Or was it himself?
Joel sipped his beer and let his eyes linger on her for a second longer, about to change the subject, before Tommy—that big-mouthed bastard—broke the moment.
“Leela’s birthday’s comin’ up in a few days, right?” he said, nodding toward Joel like he expected him to confirm. “You two got plans?”
Joel damn near choked. He shot Tommy a glare so sharp it could’ve gutted a man. Wanted to kick him square in the balls. What was this little shit implying? And her birthday? He didn’t even know. Then again, he wasn't big on celebrations anyway.
Leela, to his relief, didn’t seem to care much. She just shook her head. “No plans.”
Maria, of course, had other ideas. Plans. To put that unused, exquisite dining room in her home to good use.
“Dinner, then,” she announced, already scheming, her face bright with it. “Your place. You don't have to lift a finger, the menu’s on me.”
Leela hesitated. “Um...”
Joel was ready to witness Maria take a licking for the first time ever. He could see the wheels turning in Leela's head, the way her fingers curled into Maya’s blanket. She looked down at the baby, who was happily slapping her little hands against the table, amusing herself, laughing that hiccuping laugh, at the sound.
Joel couldn’t help but smile. He reached out, brushing his knuckles over Maya’s chin, and she let out a delighted squeal, and tried to catch his hand before he returned it to his glass.
Leela exhaled, barely a smile on her lips, blindsiding him with: "I think that'd be nice. I could make something, too. With seasoning." And she flashed a knowing grin at Joel.
He bit his smile into the rim of his beer glass, meeting her eye. "Amen."
“Sweet,” Tommy grinned. “I’ll let Ellie know.”
When the food arrived in a leering waitress's arms, Joel didn’t touch his plate right away. He was too busy looking at Tommy’s. A full rack of ribs, juicy, glistening with sauce, looking like the best damn thing on the table. Regret burned in his gut.
Tommy, the smug shithead, was already smirking, rolling back his sleeves. “Something wrong, big brother?”
Joel grunted, reaching for his beer instead of dignifying that with an answer. His brother had no one to impress, Maria was well-versed in Tommy-isms. Joel had played it safe. Ribs were messy. Hands-on. Fucking delicious. If he were alone, or if it was just Tommy, he’d be going to town on them.
But with Maya switching from his lap to Leela's lap half the time? With Leela, this smart, stunning girl, sitting beside him, barely eating, her shoulder brushing his every now and then? He’d gone for the safe, decent option. A nice slab of brisket. Neater. Quieter. Civil. Less of a goddamn spectacle.
Across from him, Maria was already chatting about something—town expansion, hydroponics for the greenhouse, that kind of thing. Leela was listening, but not really. Not engaging entirely. Her gaze stayed down, distracted.
And then there was Maya. For all her adorableness, she was being an absolute menace. Squirming. Reaching. Grabbing. Her big eyes were all stubborn, yet curious. Joel felt her shifting in Leela’s lap, wiggling against her arm, determined to smack her little hands onto her mother's plate.
“Maya, please,” Leela whispered, exasperated, nudging her hands away. Even positioning her farther on her lap.
Of course, it didn’t work. Maya let out a loud, insistent whine—real dramatic-like. Another scream of objection, fists squeezed like she was throwing a fit, and smacking for the plate again.
Maria chuckled. “Kid’s got some lungs on her.”
Leela huffed a small, tired laugh, but Joel could see her struggle even if it was hilarious. Trying to keep handsy Maya at bay while attempting to cut her steak one-handed. She wasn’t doing a great job of it. Fork in one hand, knife awkwardly angled in the other, barely making progress.
Joel didn’t think about it. Didn’t need to.
He just reached over and swapped their plates. Simple. Quiet. Didn’t make a thing of it. Just slid his brisket—already cut—toward her, nudging it a little farther from Maya’s reach.
Leela stilled. And glanced up at him, astonished.
Joel kept his eyes on his own plate, reaching for his knife. Shrugged, like it was nothing. “Go on,” he urged. “The best thing you'll put in your mouth.”
Tommy cleared his throat, catching onto the innuendo. Joel imagined sticking his knife into his eye.
Leela hesitated. Then, after a beat, he heard the soft clink of her fork against the plate as she speared a piece. A grateful smile came alive on her face while she chewed, a genuine one. He'd learned to tell the difference now.
“Thank you, Joel,” she nodded.
Joel nodded back, a tight smile stretching on his lips. Took a bite from his plate. There was nothing else to be said. The message was clear: I've got you.
Oh, Joel didn’t miss the looks either. Maria’s subtle smirk behind her glass. Tommy’s full-blown, shit-eating grin. The two of them watched like they were studying a goddamn exhibit every time Joel so much as glanced at Leela or reached out for Maya.
Fuck them. He ignored it all, chewing through another bite of steak, keeping his focus where it needed to be. Maya was calm now. Full belly, busy little hands—playing with his own hand now, like it was her favourite toy in the world. Leela, finally eating without interruption, though still too quiet.
Joel didn’t say a damn word about any of it. Even when Maria started up again.
“What I'm saying is, that the town’s growing,” she said, wiping her mouth. “More people settling in every month. It’s getting to the point where we’re running low on homes.”
That got Joel’s attention. His chewing slowed, a sliver of suspicion creeping in. Tommy wasn’t looking at him. That was the first red flag that he'd learned from one of the more recent dinners in the Miller household.
“Couple of new families coming in next week,” Maria continued. “One’s got three kids. You believe that? Haven’t had that many young ones in Jackson in a long time.”
Joel grunted. More people. More mouths to feed. Meant the town was growing, sure—but also meant more risk. Running this place with a tight ship was already starting to show. And Maria wasn’t done.
“Thing is, if we keep expanding at this rate, we’ll have to start repurposing old homes.”
There it was. Joel was halfway through his beer when he heard more of this.
“You know, Joel,” Tommy started his tone too goddamn casual to be anything but questionable. “If push comes to shove, we could always put your place up for new tenants.”
Joel’s grip tightened on his glass. He didn’t blink. Didn’t look at Tommy right away. Just kept chewing slow, steady, like he hadn’t heard a thing.
Because he knew what this was. He knew Tommy and that arrogant little edge in his voice, the way Maria was staying too quiet, swirling her drink like she wasn’t waiting for impact.
It was a set-up. Fishing. Looking for a reaction. Confirming some inside hunches. And Maria took the shot before he could load his own.
“We’d put you up at ours, sure enough,” she said, breezy, easy.
“No kidding. You're family, can't just chuck you on the street as much as I want to,” Tommy added, mockingly, grinning like a jackass.
Joel set his drink down with a little too much pressure, the sound a noisy thud. Finally, finally, he levelled a look at Tommy. He didn't need to say a damn thing. Because whatever was on his face? It was enough.
Tommy coughed, glancing away as if he felt the heat of it. He knew what would follow if he spoke another word. Maria, to her credit, held his stare, only raising an eyebrow.
Joel’s jaw flexed, real slow. The urge to tell them both to go straight to hell was right there, burning at the back of his throat. And he would have. Would’ve shut the whole damn thing down, hard. But before he could, Leela beat him to it with—
“I have spare rooms in my place,” she said, casually. Like she was discussing the weather. “If that happens, Joel could take one. Stay as long as he wants.” She used Maya's arm to motion a wave. “Maya would love that, too.”
More silence. She was just full of surprises today, wasn't she?
Tommy, who had been bracing for impact, looked like he’d tripped over his own damn feet. Maria, mid-drink, paused. Chewed on her cheeks. Like she was recalibrating the entire situation.
And Joel? He didn't even know what to do with that. For a second, all he could do was stare at Leela, completely gobsmacked. What she'd suggested was to take it to the next level, in the most casual way. Yeah, just stay with me and my kid, forever, I guess. Doesn't matter.
Leela didn’t look up. Didn’t seem to notice what she’d said. She just kept wiping at Maya's mouth and hands who'd started to entertain herself by blowing raspberries, and bouncing her gently like it was the most natural thing in the world.
Joel exhaled through his nose. A slow, heavy thing. “It's all a big 'if',” he muttered, edged with finality.
Maria recovered first. Pulled a face that said she was perfectly fine with it. “Yep.”
Tommy, still catching up, pressed his lips together. “Just wanted to make sure of something,” he muttered. “Pretty sure now.”
Joel didn’t ask what. Just picked up his beer again, and took a slow, measured sip. His glare at Tommy, though? Firmly in place.
They left the restaurant together, in cackles of laughter that was at the expense of Joel's face, making their way up the same street where their homes resided, boots crunching against the frozen dirt road. The air was sharp, biting, but Joel barely felt it.
Maya had run herself ragged. After all her theatrics inside—her constant wriggling, the battle for the damn steak, the way she’d made herself known to the entire damn restaurant—she’d finally given in.
“You feelin' cold, baby?” he murmured.
She was in his arms now, bundled up and warm, her bunny-ear beanie snug over her head. Her tiny nose was red from the cold, her cheek pressed against the fabric of his jacket, picking at a loose lint on his sweater. He tucked closer, safer, pressing a warming kiss into her sleepy head.
Joel caught up with Maria before she could reach Tommy and Leela ahead. His breath came out in slow, even puffs, but inside, he felt a little less steady. Hadn’t planned on asking. Hadn’t even realized it was sitting there, coiled tight in his chest, until the words were already forming.
"Hey," he said lowly, his voice carrying that weighted kind of hesitation. "Can we talk?"
Maria arched a brow before smirking. "If you’re about to chew me out, it was Tommy’s idea. You know we haven’t had new people settle in for months."
Joel barely registered it. Just shook his head. Not about that.
His gaze flicked toward Leela’s back—small, quiet steps beside Tommy’s like she wasn’t all the way there. His jaw tightened before he spoke. Carefully.
"At the dam today." He paused, feeling the words thick on his tongue. "Did she seem… alright to you? Seem a little off?"
That smirk faded. Maria exhaled, her face shifting into something more careful. "Wouldn’t stay in the room with all the workers," she admitted. "Spooked her out. After that, I just let her stick by my side in the office."
Joel frowned.
"Must’ve been a trigger," Maria added, quieter now.
He only nodded. He didn't need to say what they both already knew.
He watched Leela a little longer, the way her hands stayed tucked inside her coat sleeves, the way she wasn’t engaging much with Tommy’s easy conversation. There was something… too still about her.
"She’s been quiet all night," he muttered, mostly to himself.
Maria nudged him lightly. "She’ll be fine, Joel. Baby steps."
Joel pressed his lips together. He wasn't a believer in the process of baby steps. Either you healed or you rotted in the filth of guilt or devastation for the rest of your life.
Maria gave him a sideways glance, one of those knowing looks. "You look good together."
Joel let out a breath. Not quite a scoff. Not quite anything. "Thought lawyers didn’t bullshit," he muttered.
Maria shrugged easily. "I don't. Sure, you’re," she cleared her throat, shooting him a look. "Let’s say ‘well into your prime’—and she’s… not. But I can tell she trusts you absolutely."
Joel said nothing. Only bit down the small grin that broke through his lips, staring at his boots. Coming from Maria, point-blank like that, it meant a lot.
Up ahead, Tommy was acting like he hadn’t just pulled that shit back in the restaurant, talking easy, hands in his pockets, like he was the picture of innocence.
Joel narrowed his eyes. Yeah, alright. That jagoff needed to be put in his place.
He picked up his pace, stepping just ahead of Tommy, and without breaking stride, swept his leg out.
Tommy didn’t even get a chance to balance before he was airborne—arms flailing, momentum carrying him forward—a sad, "What the fuck!"—then crashing face-first into the snow with a solid thud.
Maria burst out laughing. Full-on, bent-over, hands-on-her-knees laughing. Leela, though—she gasped, her eyes going wide, clearly more horrified than she needed to be.
Joel just kept walking, adjusting Maya, who let out a startled little giggle like she understood the exact kind of justice that had just been served.
"Fuckin' deserved it," he grumbled.
X
Maya was bawling at the big white house’s door, tiny fists clutching his shirt like letting go might break her little heart. And maybe it would—maybe that’s why Joel hesitated, his hands hovering at her back, torn between unwinding her grip and holding her tighter. Damn it, he didn’t want to go, either.
If he peeled her off him and stepped away, she’d do the sweetest thing that always got him—cover her eyes with her hands like she’d seen her mother do, weeping like his leaving was the greatest tragedy of her small world.
“He’ll come back tomorrow, Maya,” Leela tried, rubbing absently at her belly. “He has to sleep, too.”
Maya wasn’t convinced. She wriggled in her mother’s hold, stretching her arms out toward Joel, demanding, no—pleading—to be held. Then she wailed, loud and unrestrained, the kind of cry that could bring a whole street to a standstill.
Joel exhaled, a smile creeping onto his face despite himself. God, this girl was breaking his heart.
Leela shifted Maya against her chest and patted her back. “Do you want to stay a while?” Her voice was softer now. “Until she falls asleep?”
Joel didn’t even pretend to hesitate. His arms were already reaching for Maya, lifting her effortlessly out of Leela’s hold. The moment she settled against his chest, her tiny hands fisting into his shirt, her cries turned to hiccups, then sniffles.
“Gonna be a handful when she gets older,” he muttered, pressing a kiss to her damp cheek.
Leela rubbed at her eyes with the heel of her palm, stifling a yawn. “Gosh, please don’t remind me.” She nodded toward the stairs. “I’m gonna get changed. Help yourself to anything.”
Joel watched her retreat up the steps, back hunched with exhaustion. At the landing, she disappeared into the hallway, and he found himself standing there a moment longer than necessary, listening to the creak of the floorboards as she moved through the house. He liked that about her—the way she kept reminding him to make himself at home like she knew he hadn’t quite figured out how to.
Maya was still sniffling, the last remnants of her earlier tears damp against Joel’s shirt. She stirred against him, adjusting in his arms like she was making herself right at home. Safe. Where she belonged.
Joel smoothed his palm over her back and felt the way she breaths puffed against his collar, her little chest rising and falling in a slower rhythm now. She was alright. He did that.
"You missed me already?" he murmured, rubbing a thumb under her damp eye.
She didn’t answer, just breathed out a soft, shuddering coo.
Yeah. That was about what he thought.
He bounced her gently as he moved through the living room, shifting his weight as he glanced around, looking for something to keep her mind off whatever had gotten her so worked up in the first place. His eyes caught on something up on the shelf, half-forgotten.
That record player he'd been gawking at for weeks. Not just any old thing, either. Glass case. Dark mahogany. Expensive. Fancy, like the rest of Leela’s place.
There was already a record inside. Percy Sledge. Gold, fucking gold. The glossy cover sat neatly on the side like someone had meant to come back to it and never did.
Joel exhaled, dusting off the lid before flipping it open. “Haven’t heard this in a long time,” he muttered, mostly to himself. Then, glancing down at Maya, "You wanna hear some music, baby girl?"
Maya blinked up at him, her earlier tears forgotten, and let out that breathless little panting laugh she did when she was excited. Her small hands clapped together in that uncoordinated, barbed motion that made her look like she was still figuring out how her own fingers worked.
Joel grinned. “Yeah, me too.”
He brushed away the dust, set the needle down, and let the music cut through the quiet.
The room filled with the low, honeyed croon of Percy Sledge, velvet-smooth, drifting through the air like something out of a different time.
Joel felt her still in his arms, eyes going wide as she stared at the record player, completely awestruck. Like she was trying to make sense of where the sound was coming from.
He poked a finger into her squishy thigh. “Never heard real music before? You like it?”
Maya was so curious, watching the record spin, producing music, head tilting in that goddamned adorable way of hers, like she was putting all her baby brainpower into figuring it out.
Joel’s chest ached. It was a deep, familiar thing, the kind of ache that came from having too much and knowing it was, perhaps now, all his to keep.
He shifted Maya in his arms, kissing the top of her bunny-eared beanie. She smelled like warm blankets, like home, even though he’d never had a home quite like this before.
"You wanna dance with me, darlin’?"
She gasped, her whole body jerking in excitement, arms flailing like she couldn’t believe her luck. Then came that breathless, hitching laugh—the one that made her whole face crinkle, her tiny chest heaving like she could barely keep up with herself.
He’d never heard her laugh like this before. Was that the first?
So he lifted her high into the air, listening to the way she squealed, legs kicking like she was soaring. That same laugh again—bright, bubbling over, pure sunshine—rang through the room as he pulled her back into his chest, then did it again. Twice. Thrice. Oh, his back was going to pay the piper, but for that laugh, it was fucking worth it.
She was weightless, and for a moment, so was he. The world didn’t feel so heavy when he had her in his arms like this.
His eyes caught on something in the doorway.
Leela. She was watching.
She had changed into that same white nightdress, the one with the pearl buttons he liked more than he should. Loose fabric brushing just above her ankles, a sleeve slipping off her shoulders. She was leaning against the doorframe, arms folded, fingers touching her lips like she was trying to trap the smile already there.
Joel didn’t stop moving, just slowed a little, swaying Maya in his arms, pretending like his chest didn’t feel too goddamn tight at the look on Leela’s face. If he stopped, the moment might end, and he wasn’t ready for that.
Leela wasn’t looking at him, not exactly. Her eyes were on Maya, wondering, at the way she was still laughing, still catching her breath, little fingers clinging to the fabric of Joel’s shirt like her whole world was nothing but him and the feeling of flying.
He'd never had anything like this. Something whole, real, his. Could this moment get any more perfect? And then he had the thought—
He wanted to dance with Leela.
It settled deep in his chest, curling between the cracks. Maybe he’d wanted that for a while now. Maybe that was why his hands always hoped to reach for her when it was without Maya, why his pulse kicked up when she got too close, why he always noticed when she was around—soft, careful, like someone who didn’t want to take up too much space.
He huffed, dipping his head down to whisper against Maya’s temple, his voice all low and warm—"Gotta give your mama a turn, huh?"
He lowered Maya onto the couch, kissing her nose, making sure she was snug, and safe between the sunken cushions. She was already grabbing for her baby blanket, nibbling on the edge of it, still watching him with that shining little grin. That was enough confidence to power him up.
Joel knew better than to ask Leela. Knew better than to want. She’d probably turn him down. Politely. And somehow, that would hurt worse. Brushing him off like a stranger.
But he asked anyway.
He turned around and didn’t say a word—just held out his hands, just a little. Not a grand gesture, nothing obvious, just enough. Just enough that she’d see it, that she’d know. He wants her close.
Leela’s gaze flickered, something changing. Her lips parted, just barely, and for a moment—a long, slow, aching moment—he thought she might step forward, might meet him where he stood. A silly pipedream.
Joel was too goddamn old for his heart to be pounding like this. Like some stupid kid, all restless hands and reckless hope, hoping the girl he liked would share that feeling with him. It had been a long time since someone made him feel like this. Hell, he wasn’t sure he ever had—not like this. Not with something this soft, this easy, this whole.
He blamed that when she looked away, the moment unravelling.
Blamed the gap, the years that stretched between them, the life he’d already lived, the losses already burned into his bones. The grey in his hair, the angry brow, the lines on his face. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Not for him. Not anymore. But then—why did he still want? Why, after all these years, after everything, did he still feel this?
The way his chest clenched when she hesitated. The way his palms itched, waiting, wanting. The way he caught himself hoping—hoping—like some love-struck fool that she might actually step forward.
He exhaled slowly, telling himself it was fine. Telling himself he was being ridiculous. She didn’t owe him anything. He should’ve known better, should’ve kept his hands where they belonged... anyways, what else could he offer her?
And then she did. She moved a little. Leaned off the doorway. A few slow, quiet steps forward. Hands knotted behind her back, shoulders tense, reluctant to give in.
His breath caught in his throat.
She wasn’t looking at him—not at first. Her eyes dipped downward to the boots on his feet, flickering uncertainly, almost like she was working up the nerve to do something.
And then she glimpsed his hands. The callouses. The mangled skin. The years of work, of war, of violence. Of a life that had been anything but easy. The way his fingers curled just slightly like he wasn’t sure if he should be offering them in the first place.
For a moment, she hesitated. And he thought, yeah, that’s about right.
And then—slowly, so slowly—she slipped her hands into his. Her fingers were slender against his, swallowed within his own, cool and soft where his were rough, ruined. It had been so long since anyone had reached for him first.
He didn’t move right away. Just felt it. The way she fit there, the shape of her hands in his, like it wasn’t a mistake. Like she wasn’t regretting it.
All those lifetimes, chipping away parts of him, making space for her hands to be there. And fuck, if that didn’t scare him more than anything.
The scratchy record spun on, Percy Sledge’s voice melting into the room, velvet-smooth. What am I living for, he sang on, if not for you?
Joel swallowed thickly.
Slowly, he guided her hand to his bicep, barely pressing down. She was tense, wound tight like she’d bolt if he moved too fast. So he didn’t.
"You good?" he checked in.
She nodded, glancing up, baring a gentle smile.
His own hand skimmed her hip—ginger, careful—before settling there. He let her other hand hang from his grasp, mid-air, not forcing it, not demanding more than she was willing to give. Leela was stiff against him, like this was too much for her. Like it had been too long for her, too. Like she was afraid of him. Of this. My god, it burned.
So he eased. Dipped his head, rested his nose against her hairline, and just swayed. Joel couldn't cut a rug or shake his hips to save his damn life, but he could feel. And shit, he felt so good.
She was right there. Right where he wanted her, but not as close as he wanted, although he completely dwarfed her. He could feel the tension in her frame, that deep-rooted hesitance like she wasn’t sure she was allowed this.
Joel knew that feeling all too well. So he let her lead without leading. Let her find the pace. Even if it was fucking killing him.
Even though his body ached to pull her closer. Even though his fingers twitched where they rested against her hip, wanting to dig in, to hold, to keep. He wanted her warmth pressed tight to him, her weight resting against his chest. Wanted to feel her relax, not just in body but in heart.
He’d spent years running on instinct, on gut, making quick decisions with deadly precision. But he’d never been this meticulous about anything before.
And then—he felt it. The shift. It wasn’t big, not something he would've noticed a while ago. Now he did. The way her breath came just a little easier. The way her grip steadied, not quite clinging but not pulling away either. She was letting herself be here.
And for the first time in some time—Joel wanted to feel, too.
So he let himself move with her. Not well, not smooth, not anything he’d want anyone else to see. But with her.
She laughed like he'd cracked something open in her, when he pulled her in, twirling her under his arm, snaring her against his chest before she could stumble. She laughed again when he spun her out, her head tipping back, black hair spilling like a dark halo.
"Never been spun around, my ass," he muttered against her hair as he spun her back into him, arms curling around her waist, anchoring her to him. "You're a natural."
Leela laughed, breathless, cheeks flushed. "Practice. Mom and I used to spin around for hours when it got lonely."
Joel stilled for just a second. He could picture it then—little Leela, small hands clutching at her mother’s as she twirled, all giggles and untamed joy. A warm, glowing memory, but edged with something else. The kind of happiness you cling to when there’s nothing else.
He hummed low in his throat, muffling a smile. Leela’s fingers curled against his back.
"Joel?"
"Mhm?"
She hesitated, just a beat. "I think you look really handsome today."
He stopped moving altogether. A strange, sharp thing twisted behind his ribs—surprise, confusion, something too damn soft to name. Handsome. Not tired, not rude, not old. Joel was handsome to her. The prickling memory from that morning, her mistaking him for her father went up in smoke.
For a second, he considered brushing it off, making some dry remark, giving himself an out. He wasn’t careful about much. Wasn’t the kind of man who tiptoed around what he wanted. Life had burned that out of him long ago. But right now? Right now, he was careful.
So, Joel did what he could; he held her tighter. Not much. Just enough. Just enough that she’d know he’d heard her.
And when he finally spoke, it was quiet, low, a little rough around the edges. "Thank you, darlin'."
Leela smiled up at him. And Joel—God help him. He let himself smile back.
As Percy crooned about his love growing stronger and his lover becoming a habit, they actually danced. However slow it was, there was a wildness to the way she moved, arms outstretched, the hem of her nightdress catching air, cheeks catching the low lamplight. The sharp pivot of her foot against the floorboards, the way her body dipped and twisted, loose and natural. She looked so young, so different from the woman he’d met all those weeks ago, that quiet, anxious thing who always kept herself tucked away.
This was the Leela he was falling for.
And he was so fucked. But for the first time in a long time—he was glad he was.
Joel barely had time to react before she was in his arms, knocking the wind out of his chest. Not swaying anymore, not laughing—just holding.
Her arms locked tight around his waist, cheek pressed firm against his chest like she was bracing herself. Like something in her had finally tipped over, finally let go, and she needed something to catch her.
And Joel—goddamn it, Joel wasn’t sure what to do. How to process this. She didn’t do things like this. Not the Leela he’d come to know. She was careful, always. Kept her distance. Kept everything measured. Even when she let people in, it was guarded. Always one foot out the door, always ready to pull away.
But now?
Now, she was holding on. Holding onto him.
Joel hesitated, feeling all of her against all of him, the heat, the muscle, the softness, the realness.
Then, slow and steady, he let himself move. One arm curled around her waist, the other settled at the back of her head. His fingers slid into her hair, pressing her close—not just to comfort her, but to reassure himself. She was here. He was here. They were here.
She wasn’t trembling, but she was tense. Her grip on him was firm, almost desperate. Holding onto something bigger than just this moment, nails digging into his sweater, something that must’ve been clawing at her for God knows how long.
"I needed this a lot," she muttered, voice barely above a whisper, muffled against his chest.
Joel swallowed. Shifted just enough to angle his chin over the crown of her head. "Anytime."
That was all he could say. Because what else was there?
He didn’t know how to tell her that she could stay like this for as long as she wanted. All night, all day, That whatever had been weighing her down before—whatever had kept her small, kept her afraid—it wasn’t going to touch her here. Not while he was holding her.
Although he wished the song could last forever, reality came a-knocking, and they answered. There was nothing awkward left to pick up, just a dreaming baby girl on the couch cushions.
After placing Maya in her crib and squeezing three deep goodnight kisses into her head, Joel left to cross the street. He turned around to see Leela by the big oak door, watching him go, a meaningful smile alive on her face. She waved him goodnight.
The heat in his cabin hit him first as he entered, sighing. Thick and suffocating. The fire in the hearth had burned too hot again, filling the place with a sticky kind of warmth that made his skin prickle.
Joel shrugged off that expensive shearling jacket, tossed it somewhere, and rubbed a hand down his face. It was too damn quiet. No soft breaths ghosted across his skin. No little palms clung to the fabric of his shirt.
Just the crackle of fire. Empty arms. The twisted sheets on his bed. And himself.
Joel sat down at the edge of the mattress, forearms braced against his knees, head in his hands. A million hazy thoughts swirled, smouldering, yet all he could look upon clearly was wanting to close the gap and kiss that girl in her living room.
Was this what he wanted? Would he really go through with it? If it all went to shit—if he fucked it up, if they got hurt, if she regretted letting him in—there’d be no one else to blame, but him. He would have done this to himself, some sort of screwed-up self-sabotage he thought he earned. Someday, when he kicks the bucket, all he is going to leave to that family is grief. Or not even that? Was he worth the suffering? Would they spare him a thought?
His fingers unconsciously drifted down, brushing against the cracked leather of his watch strap. That old, broken dial. The last thing Sarah had ever given him, the last vestige of her memory, hanging off his defeated body.
The hands were still stuck in place—frozen, unmoving. Just like he’d been for all those years. Until now.
Joel exhaled, slow and heavy, dragging a hand down his face. He was already in too deep.
And maybe—maybe he didn’t want to climb back out.

───── ABOUT the heavy rain doesn't seem to stop anytime soon, so why not just make a run for it?
⋆ 𝒈𝒆𝒏𝒓𝒆: fluff, est. rs, humour ⋆ 𝒑𝒂𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈: bf!jeonghan x f!reader ⋆ 𝒄𝒘: skinship, kissing (lmk if more) ⋆ 𝒘𝒄: 0.7k
A/N: part of @bella-feed's 100+ followers event!! <3 so glad to be a part of it, tysm bella! This was pretty rushed, since I've been busy with alot of things at once, but I did my best! I could've written a full fic if it weren't for my schedule :( | @sanaxo-o @dokyumms
Tumblr media
You watch as Jeonghan shivers in the cold, his t-shirt—that looked so good on him just a moment ago—now drenched in rainwater.
“I told you we should’ve brought an umbrella,” you sigh, rubbing his shoulder to provide some sort of comfort even though you were almost completely wet by the rain too.
“I thought it wouldn't rain,” he mumbled in a pouty voice, putting a hand over yours. “They said the same thing yesterday but there wasn't a single drop of water from the sky.”
“Okay, now, that isn’t the problem, hannie.” You say, moving your hand away gently to pinch the drenched t-shirt he wore. “You’ll get cold if you stay like this.”
“Well,” the corners of his lips curled into a sly smile, his eyes gleaming with mischief. “It's already drenched, so making a run for it wouldn't hurt.”
Clicking your tongue, you hit his head gently with a faint smile. “Are you sick in the head?”
“Maybe, but it's either this or we are stuck here in this rusty bus stand for the entire day.” He sighs dramatically.
His words did make sense. The bus stand you both were stuck in due to the sudden heavy rainfall wasn't the best, but it did protect you two in some way. If only Jeonghan had listened to the weather forecast and brought an umbrella, you wouldn't have to suffer standing here now. The worst thing was the fact that your shared apartment was just a few blocks away, but it wasn't possible to reach there without splashing rainwater all over your lower body and drenching yourself in the rain.
But your boyfriend's suggestion didn't sound so bad either.
Biting your lower lip and folding your arms, you squint your eyes at him, considering his words.
You sigh, unfolding your arms. “That’s a good idea bu—”
“That's it!” Jeonghan chirps, already grabbing your hand.
And before you could realise, you two are running in the rain, water splashing everywhere. The raindrops fell on you almost harshly, but the excited grin playing on his lips made up for it. You laugh along with him, gripping on his hand tighter.
“Slow down! We’ll fall down!” You had to shout as the loud noise of the rain and splashing was deafening.
“C’mon, we're almost there!”
After what felt like two more minutes of giggling and running in the rain, you two finally reached the front porch of the apartment, coming to a halt.
Both of you were still laughing while panting to catch up with your breath.
“Do I look handsome like this?” Jeonghan asks, smiling slyly while flexing his plain white shirt that was drenched in the rain.
You look at him as if he was insane, but couldn't fight the smile. “Can I say no?” You joke, causing him to pout.
“You can't,” he says, then leans forward, puckering his lips. “But you can kiss me as a reward for being so smart.”
That made you laugh, and you reached up to cup his cheeks. “That wasn't so smart, but I'll do it since you're so desperate.”
He didn't bother to argue back, but leaned into your touch and waited for you to kiss him. But as you press your lips against his, his arms immediately wrap around your waist, pulling you in for more than just a peck.
You smiled into the kiss, but decided to kiss him back anyway.
A few seconds later, he slowly pulled back and grinned.
“This is so romantic, we should run back there and run back here again.” He says, but bursts into laughter when you hit him in the shoulder.
“You're crazy, Yoon Jeonghan.”
“You loveee me~”
“You're unbelievable.” You chuckle, pecking his lips.

Hello, I hope your day goes well as you're reading this!
If your request is still open, can I request touch deprived! Arlecchino and Touch deprived! Reader? Like reader is very clingy and affectionate to her closest friends because she's been deprived of physical affection since she was younger, and Arlecchino who's also touch deprived but unlike reader who has no problem with physical affection, she finds it hard to do it, but when she meets reader who's hugs are so comfortable she's grown addicted to it and craves her gentle touches more and more, thank you! Have a great day or night!
Tumblr media
(I realise I’m apologising on every post for the late ones, but I’m almost caught up to a reasonable delay) hi anon!! I feel this hard, I am so affectionate because I was touch starved as a child. Though, I focused this writing piece more on Arlecchino. I love exploring her and her being in character and slightly OOC too. (She’s my comfort character, can you guys tell?) thank you for the ask!
Word count: 1k
Content: fluff, Arlecchino is touched starved, she loves you
Nsft utc!
Tumblr media
Arlecchino and you have come from completely different backgrounds (that are unfortunately all too similar as well). You worked well together even so, your routines matching each other, the same sense of humour. By that, I mean, you joked, her lips barely turned up, and she hummed in response (which is equivalent to your wheezing on the sofa over.. a silly cat?). The point is, you worked. You both made sense together. Except one, tiny little detail.
You loved physical touch, and she despised it. Once you discovered how it felt, you were obsessed. You loved the way your body was enveloped by arms that seemed like they’d block out the whole world for you.
Arlecchino hated physical touch. She isn’t used to it, she grew up with her horrifying excuse for a Mother, and physical affection was used often as manipulation rather than anything else, she saw that much with what happened to her dear, dear friend (who haunts her dreams).
The first time Arlecchino held you was a year into your relationship. She awoke during the night to an empty bed, and when she made her way towards the living room, she saw you, in tears on the sofa. A bad dream, you had said, and nothing more. Arlecchino saw the way your body was almost aching for some sort of touch, and despite the discomfort, her arms wrapped around you. Awkward, clumsy, and a little bit forced, but she hugged you. She had not hugged someone since she was sixteen. Without a word, her thumb stroked against your arm, and she felt the way your body slumped against her body. She felt like a burning fire, you realised, most likely due to the flames running through her veins, but you welcomed it nonetheless.
She began to notice that holding you in her embrace was not as torturous as she assumed. Arlecchino held you until you fell asleep.
Her embraces were few and far between, reserved only for special moments or moments where she can see you need them. Her facial expression never changes, but over time, she becomes slightly more comfortable with every hug. She ended up craving your embraces, the way your hand gingerly caresses her cheek and your lips on her skin, the gentle squeeze on her arm when you go past her. She wanted so desperately to associate touch with you instead, someone she knows could never hurt a spider.
Eventually, she begins allowing it more and more, and even begins silently hinting when she wants one by sighing slightly louder, or grumbling a bit when things go wrong, only to feel a fuzzy warmth inside when you smile at her and give a gentle touch. Both you and Arlecchino wonder if she will one day make the first move.
Arlecchino does not know why she dislikes physical affection so much. She enjoys buying gifts she knows you will cherish and love instead, doing things at a distance. This was never supposed to be anything more than a fling, she didn’t want investment, she didn’t want any affection to be returned, but she fell for you, and hard. She dislikes how vulnerable she has become around you, but a part of her deep down inside of her likes it too. Arlecchino is scared you will leave, that you will ruin her one day, and she feels like it won’t happen if she doesn’t let on how hard she has fallen. (Everyone knows and says nothing.)
Perhaps she prefers affection the way she does, unrequited and with little investment, is because some part of her craves a love so great that it would tear her apart, and that frightens her. She does not know how to receive love, yet she still wants a love that will consume her entire being and burn hotter than the flames that course through her veins with every beat of her slowly-thawing heart. You are thawing her, she knows that much.
The weather chills the way her touch grows warmer, and winter comes quickly. The winter in Snezhnaya was cold and biting, and despite her accommodating her home for you (she clearly does not need it) by lighting the fireplace and leaving you blankets, the cold still finds its way into your bones, leaving you shivering. One night, when it is the coldest night of the year, you find yourself unable to sleep at all. You lay awake in the dark, thinking about your past the way you always do at night, shivering so hard you’re practically vibrating.
At some point, you hear her stirring, and you try to quiet yourself, to make sure she can continue sleeping. She noticed the second she opened her eyes, though. Doesn’t she always? She is glad you are pretending to sleep so you do not see the hesitation in her eyes before she snaps herself out of it and does what you both want her to. Wordlessly, she shuffles a few inches closer and her arm wraps around your midsection, dragging you closer until her body is wrapped around yours. Arlecchino, being the attentive person she is, notices your smile and sigh of relief and the way your shivering stops. She notices the way you nestle further in once you know she’s okay with it, and she notices when your breath falls into a deep rhythm.
It is her turn to stare at the wall, her heart beating faster than usual, the only giveaway of any of her feelings. Slowly, her arms snake around you until she’s holding you so tight you can’t move even if you wanted to. Her breath is visible when she exhales, when she lets her body finally relax in the company of another. Arlecchino buries her face into your hair, smelling your shampoo. The smell makes her drowsy, she tells herself (it is not the smell, it is that after so many years, her walls have crumbled completely), and she finds her eyes drooping until she, too, falls into the throes of sleep.
Arlecchino sleeps the best she ever has. Arlecchino has her first night of no nightmares since she became the poor, mad, cursed knave. Arlecchino does not feel so cursed when you are beside her.

"Tim, look at me, baby."
You softly said to Tim. Tim turned his eyes away from his computer to face you. He had been so absorbed in a case he had neglected to notice the time.
You gestured for him to join you on his bed, which he reluctantly agreed to lie down with you. The case can wait, cuddling with you cannot.
You held him and played with his hair gently. It's become a bit of a tradition for you to bring him to bed. You set a bedtime that he still has not quite yet figured out the pattern of nor cared to. (it ranges from 11 pm until 2 am and never the same day-by-day), and you know exactly how to get him to fall asleep.
"Talk to me, my love."
Tim grumbled in your ear. He was already feeling sleepy, but he loved to fall asleep to the sound of your voice and heartbeat. It soothed him to hear your soft voice
"Baby, you need rest."
Tim mumbled while burying his face in your neck,
"Humour me, my love. Tell me why you love me."
You smiled. A tired Tim was an adorable Tim. You were so weak for your Timmy. You softly explain,
"I love the sea blue colour in your eyes. I always want to visit the ocean when I look at the waves of blue in your eyes."
He kissed your shoulder from his comfortable location. He was partially on top of you with his arms lazily wrapped around your torso and one of his legs wrapped around your waist. He blushed when you kissed the top of his head.
"There's my pretty boy."
You murmured and captured his lips in an unhurried kiss. You always loved to tease him. To you, he's the stars in the night sky. He is embarrassed now but you said warmly,
"My beautiful boy. I love your timid smile that your silly brain seems to hate."
You kissed his blushing cheeks then his forehead. His eyes flutter shut, and a sleepy smile crosses his face.
"I love your constantly freezing body that needs at least ten blankets to warm you up."
Tim hummed. It's true. He feels bad warming his hands on you, but you never complain. You laugh when he borderline wraps himself around you to soak up your warmth. You call him a warmth vampire with such a fond tone of voice. He swears he falls in love again every time you wrap him in blankets and offered to cuddle because you know he's freezing and needs your heat. You continued,
"I love your kindness and compassion. You managed to befriend Kon when he hated everyone and everything, and you made a group with friends who all have troubles with the goal to help make the world a better place."
You kissed his forehead and pulled him closer to you. You want his full weight on top of you.
Tim, sensing your desire, rolled to lie fully on top of you and relaxed into your warm body. You both love this position. He felt like a weighted blanket to you, and you felt like a crackling fireplace to him.
You snaked one of your arms around his waist while your other hand massaged his scalp. You felt him physically melt into your body.
"I love your silky hair that falls in messy strands every time you run your fingers through your hair."
Tim yawned and nestled his face in the crook of your neck. You smiled fondly at your partially sleeping boyfriend.
"I love listening to your thoughts when you gush over something you are passionate about."
Tim pressed his hand gently against your chest, over your heart to feel the steady pulse.
"Baby, I love everything about you. You would give me the stars if you could, and I'll always love you. You mean the world to me."
Tim fell asleep pretty quickly. He was wrapped around you like a tangled string. His legs wrapped loosely around yours, and his arms securely circled around your waist.
You loved him deeply, and he loved you. You kissed his forehead gently. Tim sleeps like the dead, so you aren't worried about waking him.
You held him with a smile on your face. He was so adorable; the relaxed expression on his face made you want to kiss him all over. He mumbled in his sleep,
"I love you."
Your hold on him tightened as you whisper softly back to his sleeping body,
"I love you, baby."

authors note: NOT PROOFREAD AT ALL! The formatting is a bit all over the place but these are straight-up taken from Discord chats I had with Elias, pls. I hope they're not too hard to understand. These are all basically "what ifs" and alternate universes + one section for Heian Period Ryomen Sukuna with a (L/N)'s ancestor! " " = means straight-up copy-pasted so I guess they kinda act as a foreword for each drabble
Tumblr media Tumblr media
starting off with some HCs of (Y/N)’s high school years!
(Y/N) thinks Satoru must understand the pain of being the next head of the clan, get trained vigorously, and deal with aching bones and sores. Nope! Satoru’s never dealt with that much less dealt with (Y/N)’s father.
Shoko has a dark sense of humour so she laughs at his dark jokes but (Y/N) does notice the three of them end up pampering him more often.
Satoru buys him food most of the time. Drinks and snacks and ice cream, if (Y/N) gazes at something too long Satoru just tosses it into his cart.
Suguru tends to help him stretch or massage him. He’d even fix (Y/N)’s hair, almost motherly in his actions. He makes sure (Y/N) is presentable, makes sure he doesn’t have to worry because; “Su-Su will fix it~”.
Shoko makes sure (Y/N) is always wound-free. From buying antiseptics to burn relief gels (they all have a travel-sized bottle on their person to be fair). She buys him cigarettes when he needs them and always pokes him in his sides or the back of his head, she made it a habit to use RCT on him just in case he’s in pain but can’t feel it.
Tumblr media
"You'd come back to me"
"What if Nanami Kento and (Y/N) survived the Shibuya arc?"
Kento stroked your bangs away and then pressed kisses with every compliment he gave. Your chuckles give him this feeling that if you ever told him "please" he'd give up everything just to hear it again. Kento lightly pushes you away but slips a hand underneath you, tugging his (Y/N) closer. “Kennnnnny."
Usually, Kento doesn’t enjoy nicknames but every time you say it, the world seems bright and sweet. So he noses at your jaw and relishes in the giggles.
“You’re beautiful,” he says with so much sincerity.
“You’re not too bad yourself.” Kento grins and presses a searing kiss to your lips.
You are both covered in scars. Nanami’s still pinkish and healing even with the help of socerery and yours still aching and bruised. But nothing about you could be wrong. Because that wasn’t possible. The ring on your hand is cool on his neck as you tilt his head to deepen the kiss. Kento turns and chuckles as you yelp, straddling him now.
“Kento!”
“Yes, my (Y/N)?”
Your eyes soften, and he kisses you again.
"The beach will be more cloudy. We can sit on the porch and I'll make you that milky tea again." He thinks it's a shame the two of you are stuck inside the house. It cannot be helped; his skin was far too sensitive for Malaysia's unapologetic sunny rays and dry heat and although you comfort him by saying your scars are still healing too, he wants nothing more than to pick you up and wash away all the remnants of Shibuya in seawater. "I can make it," he says. "Kento," you press your finger onto his lips, tracing it until you're cupping his face and stroking over his cheekbones. "Let me take care of you." Kento frowns and places his hand over yours, tracing the shape of your healing knuckles and raised scars. "Only if you'll let me do the same, my (Y/N)."
Tumblr media
Kento who survived the Shibuya arc is left with a very sensitive wound all over the left side of his body. His hearing is unbalanced and his depth perception is fucked but (Y/N) helps him through all the transitions he goes through.
(Y/N) feels guilty for using his curse technique when it’d been fire that hurt Kento. Who doesn’t use it around Kento or if he does use it, he makes sure the smell is gone and washes his hands, and makes sure Kento can hold him without fear. But Kento doesn’t fear him! Kento figured it out and he just tells (Y/N); “My love, you never need to hide yourself from me…”
Yuji helps Kento with physical therapy. Kento grunts but allows Yuji to hug him when he regains consciousness. Kento who asks Yuji if he’d like to be his ringbearer during their wedding.
(Y/N) who is so nervous to meet Kento’s parents. He knows non-sorcerers and sorcerers don’t have many differences in their daily lives outside of exorcising curses but worries nonetheless. Kento’s mom is bright and jovial, and his father is even more so! (Y/N) is honestly taken aback by how soft-hearted they are and how they thank him for saving Kento. He finds himself loving them so much because they remind him of his mother and how gentle and kind she was.
When he asks for their blessing? He bows but is surprised when Kento’s father blocks his forehead from meeting the floor, blinking away tears when his mother holds his face.
“We’ll gladly take you in as your son, (Y/N),” and they all start crying because (Y/N) is crying, LMAO.
Kento tells (Y/N) he asked for his parent's blessing and he's confused because Kento should never do that - he doesn’t need to ask his father for his blessing but Kento simply says:
“I visited your mom’s grave. I asked for her blessing. I talked to her about how much I love you.”
At their wedding, there are empty seats in the crowd. Seats for their fallen comrades, their loved ones, seats for Tsumiki, Principal Yaga, Yū, Satoru, Suguru, (Y/N)'s mom… (blame Elias for this one)
In regards to (Y/N) seeing Geto Suguru's "body" as he descended into madness: Kento who spots him muttering to himself or staring into space. (Y/N), who after surviving the Shibuya arc, still sees Suguru and now Satoru as well. At times, he even sees Yū, Kento, Megumi, Tsumiki, Yuji, Nobara, Maki, or -His brain constantly makes it hard for him to decipher reality or fiction.
A HC based on Katniss and Peeta: (Y/N) asking Kento, “Real or not real?” when he can't tell reality from fiction.
“You’re alive, real or not real?” “Real.”
“Megumi is still breathing. Real or not real?” “Real, my love. He’s just healing. He’ll wake up soon.”
"...You love me, real or not real?" "Real, my love."
When Fushiguro Megumi wakes up:
When Megumi recovers he cries. Openly cries, sobs, and wails as he begs for forgiveness from everyone around him. (Y/N) literally rushed into the room which made Megumi flinch, yelling at him to stay away because he killed his father (Satoru), his sister, and everyone else Ryomen Sukuna had killed. But (Y/N) just holds him and holds him and holds him. Megumi finds it hard to piece his brain together after what Sukuna has done so Yuji helps. Yuji asks Kento for advice because Megumi and (Y/N) are lowkey in the same boat-ish.
Megumi who begs for forgiveness because Sukuna had done unspeakable things to (Y/N) just to make him his concubine and (Y/N) just comforts his son.
When Megumi is strong enough they go to Suguru and Satoru’s graves. There are no bodies but they buried the things that they treasured. Their wedding ring rests where Satoru would have along with Megumi and Tsumiki’s childhood drawings, pictures, and Suguru’s hairband and button. The flip phone was full of memories and high school photographs - his wedding picture too. He rests beside Geto Suguru, whose grave is filled with his daughter's belongings and the flip phone he kept too, the creased photograph of himself with Satoru, (Y/N) and Shoko. Tsumiki, Nanko and Mimiko are next to their fathers. Megumi cries as his knees give out, his only family left, his dad; (Y/N), just comforts him as much as he can. His precious boy, his beautiful son... They visit as often as they can, telling tales of their days, their weeks, and their months. Soon enough, it will be less painful for them to visit that hill. It'll be scenic and they'll no longer curse at the heavens for all this loss. They'll hate that they're no longer the same person their loved ones had seen, hate the wrinkles and the greying hair and the way they couldn't grow old together. Hate that they've been alive longer than them when they feel like they don't deserve to be. But one day it'll stop and they'll take it as a blessing to grow this old, knowing they'll see their family soon enough with so many stories to tell.

"And isn't it just so pretty to think? All along there was some invisible string, tying to you me?"
"You know - in every universe, Satoru falls in love with Suguru and (Y/N). In a few universes, their love is not tragic. In this special few, Satoru does not use (Y/N) for honor. Suguru comes back after his betrayal,l and (Y/N) and Kento defend his rights as a human. Satoru has (Y/N) help him with Suguru’s rehabilitation, and Kento helps Suguru with his clashing ideology. In the special few, Megumi is still beloved by YN but he doesn’t fear betrayal, and love just needs love to be perfect. Uncle (Y/N) cherishes Tsumiki and Megumi and Uncle Kento who teaches them how to be kind and responsible. Mimiko and Nanako learn how to befriend Tsumiki and Megumi!”
(Y/N) would've become a teacher like Satoru! Kento sends him to and from. He pouted so much when Kento knew Yuji was alive but forgave him. (Y/N) invited Yuji to eat homemade lunch and dinners in their home, and Yuji pretended not to feel himself tremble; a homemade meal was eaten around a dining table.
Yuji, who never had such an experience before; and who craves familial bonds; can’t stop shoveling food in his mouth because he keeps grinning too hard -
And when Junpei is brought back alive? (Y/N) takes to him like a moth to a flame. He volunteers to help Junpei, to house him, and bares his teeth at the higher-ups who dare take the boy from him.
Junpei wakes up to Kento cooking breakfast and (Y/N) who makes tea. Junpei gasps as (Y/N) opens up a movie and invites him to watch with him. Junpei relishes Kento’s words of advice for his newfound curse technique.
Junpei cries into the pillows and gets surprised when (Y/N) comforts him, telling him he misses his mother too, and lets (Y/N) hug him.
Junpei stares at himself in the mirror when Shoko heals his cigarette scars, brushing back his bangs confidently for the first time.
Junpei who bonds with Megumi about having shikigamis! Who Nobara (affectionately) bullies and toughens up! Maki is reminded of Yuta every time, and Inumaki chuckles at her face. Panda just loves being his senpai but keeps pushing Junpei away from him when Junpei tries to touch his fur -
Satoru and Suguru come over with Mimiko, Nanako, Tsumiki, and Megumi to their home. Yuji and Junpei picked out the movie (it’s obviously Human Earthworm - all 4 movies). The Gojo-Geto’s brought snacks and drinks, and the Nanami’s made their home so cozy and warm.

"Tell me you belong to me"
Heian Era Sukuna and the ancestor of the (L/N) clan, his only male concubine which he adored so much it caused his unending.
As a foreword (just a fan theory I adored not canon at all): "The theory that Sukuna keeps CTs within his Malovent Shrine (hence, in my fic, it’s why the (L/N) clan never flourished. Sukuna took their innate technique and left them with a CT so strong none of them had enough will-power to master). It’s not confirmed but in the Jogo fight, he says “open” and all of a sudden he can use a flame CT???" "This is basically an AU of (Y/N)'s ancestor, lmao."
They sacrificed (Y/N) to Ryomen Sukuna and gave him their prince who came to him with a sharp glare and dirtied with bruises and cuts.
“You wrap my gift so carelessly?” Sukuna drawls out.
(Y/N) is bound and gagged. His hair must have been in an impressed top knot, now a mess that spills from his shoulders.
Uruame shifts next to him and they grip (Y/N)'s cheeks to inspect him.
What a beautiful man, they think with mild surprise, it was no wonder he was chosen as a sacrifice.
But, Sukuna wants him. So, he adds his first male concubine to his harem. (Y/N) is scrubbed clean, dressed to the nines, and made to look like a doll. His face was painted, his hair brushed, his nails trimmed, and his skin moisturized.
Ryomen Sukuna is a monster with a picky tongue. Despite his greed, he only eats refined meats and fights the strongest sorcerers.
Sukuna doesn’t “love” his concubine but he favors him. That much, (Y/N) can tell. When he plays the biwa or recites sutras and haikus, Sukuna is ever so attentive. When (Y/N) bows and sits next to Lord Sukuna to feed him his meals, he finds those big hands holding him in one way or another.
When he takes (Y/N) as a “woman”, he is not gentle. Uruame is the one to prepare him. They provided him with oils and aromatic smoke to ease him, not out of the kindness of their hearts but for their Lord’s pleasure. (Y/N) swears he nearly rips taking his size but Sukuna spreads his legs and pushes in deeper and (Y/N) gasps, his tears like diamonds as he pleads for his Lord to grant him mercy.
Sukuna does. It surprises himself. But he does.
Maybe Sukuna will never understand the word love because he tells himself he’s never loved. Or maybe, he confuses it with ownership and cruelty - because it’s obvious he loves (Y/N).
He’s unfair to all but him.
He is still the King of Curses, a cruel tyrant, but (Y/N) is someone who calms his wrath with ease.
When they made that Binding Vow for (Y/N)'s curse technique to be given to Sukuna in exchange for Sukuna not being able to kill off his clan. He had thought to give YN another curse technique. But then, after (Y/N) learns Sukuna murdered a huge chunk of his clan, (Y/N) plans for his betrayal.
(Y/N) seeing the shock on Sukuna’s face as he gets sealed away, feeling the God's disdain weigh on his bones as he breaks the Binding Vow - he weeps for Sukuna despite knowing how horrible he is.
(Y/N) marries and his bloodline continues on, but there’s this terrible desire to be loved. It persists in every one of them. This ache that the King of Curses had left. This magnetism that power holds over the (L/N) clan.
In another universe, where (Y/N) finds no love in Satoru nor Kento, but Sukuna?
How delighted would the King of Curses be to see his concubine so willing for him? The King of Curses would have a harem of women. But the one man? Oh, he’s beloved. His room is closest to Sukuna’s, his appetite always filled and his bookshelves overflowing. Uruame enjoys his presence, tending to him personally and making him food as well.
(Y/N) who takes a liking to human flesh. Who finds himself ignoring the screams of tortured men and women, and only curls his nose in distaste when Sukuna wants to consume “soft” flesh.
Who grins so serenely in his King’s lap, who can’t decide which mouth he prefers on him or which hand is his favourite. Sukuna loves to be fed by (Y/N) and does the same to him.
Who learns how to please Sukuna’s cocks all by himself. Who has servants prep him open only to be killed right after - but what a privilege they had, to have Sukuna’s concubine mewl around their fingers.
Sukuna loves watching him ride, loves seeing the bulge in his stomach, the twinge of pain on his face. He loves sticking his tongue out (the one on his stomach) to lick at (Y/N)’s cock and (Y/N) yelps every time.
At times, you’ll find his precious concubine so stunning after a night of pleasure you’d stare. Each time, Uruame is there to gauge their eyes out.
Their master's toy is his alone after all.
Tumblr media
"What must it be like to grow up that beautiful? With your hair falling into place like dominoes"
polycule of satosugu x yn!
Satoru thinks he’s selfish. He knows that marrying (Y/N) fulfills duty and honour but in doing so it would be cruel for the boy. On the other hand, marrying Suguru was completely out of the realm of possibilities no matter how hard he insists.
His personal feelings about them both confuse him too.
Satoru loves Suguru. Satoru loves (Y/N).
You could imagine the relief 16-year-old Gojo Satoru felt when (Y/N) blushed at Suguru’s soft-spoken voice or when Suguru caught himself staring at (Y/N)’s lips for too long in a conversation.
In this AU - Satoru never dated Suguru, he instead gathered the two of you and just announced his feelings.
It was choppy waters to navigate through, among the political aspects of a marriage and teenage emotions and deadly missions.
But the three of you made it work. This relationship was among three men who fulfilled honour, duty, and love. Who only needed each other to feel filled.
A polyamorous marriage wasn’t taboo, it was just outdated, still with Gojo Satoru and Gojo (Y/N) both insisting that Geto Suguru would be their husband after Satoru became the head of the Gojo clan. It wasn’t as though they could be refused now.
In this AU, Suguru would not betray his husbands though not without thinking of it. He simply tightened his hold on the rings before he brought the twins back home and his heart softened as he saw them tend to the girls.
What a rowdy household. The children are so loved that they cannot fathom love doesn’t exist.
Satoru who will sigh and embrace his husbands out of the blue.
“You’re beautiful,” he’ll tell (Y/N) as he cups his face while the poor man is simply reading some document at the dining table. “Our husband is beautiful, Suguru!”
Suguru immediately gets drowsy whenever your fingers thread through his hair, and chuckles when you trace his features as he’s about to wake.
Gods, seeing you and Satoru hold onto your children’s hands as all of you walk together in a park makes thoughts of those dark summers dissipate into nothing.
Satoru sleeps in the center of your California king-sized bed. He simply refuses any other spot.
The Tokyo School has its hands full of the Gojo’s. From the husbands to their 3 children with rambunctious abilities.
When Tsumiki got cursed...it was an emotional day for everyone. Suguru swore he’d do anything to break it while Nanako and Mimiko yelled and yelled, Megumi just sobbing into your chest.
The girls visit her often, talking to her as they fix her hair and ensure she’s comfortable. Megumi appreciates their care as he silently stares from the corner.
Oh, breakfasts are always bustling.
The children are spoiled just as much as Satoru’s husbands are.
What a terrifying trio you are - abilities powerful beyond the curve!
Shoko always takes a few shots before heading over to celebrate holiday dinners, lmao.
She understands that you three enjoy asking about her love life though all three of you were made to kneel in apology as she glared after Satoru and you “accidentally” found the woman she’d been seeing.
Suguru rolls his eyes every time Satoru and you stroke the dragon spirit's snout or compliment the spear-wielding spirit.
While they bring burn-relief medication for you, Satoru and you ensure to bring snacks to wash away the foul taste of curses for Suguru and Suguru and you always have extra blindfolds and painkillers for Satoru.
Yuta grew flustered as he found out the three of you were together. He had honestly thought Suguru was cheating on Satoru with you but Maki’s scoff of “disgust” and her brief explanation made his face bloom into fifty shades of red.
Yuji would honestly not care - he’d be surprised at first but bounce back rather quickly (although Ryomen Sukuna would certainly have his comments).
ANGST TIME!
The Shibuya arc would be very different of course, though wouldn’t it just be delightful if Kenjaku managed to grab (Y/N) and force his husband to see Ryomen Sukuna not only take over their son’s body but see their husband get claimed by another?
Delicious angst, me thinks.
Tumblr media
"But I just wanna stop right next to you, if I could my dream? I just wanna stop right next to you."
polygamous marriage (?) of Satosugu and kentoYN!
In this AU, (Y/N) and Satoru would feel so guilty for letting their eyes wander to their significant future husbands.
It’s not as though they don’t love each other but there’s this societal norm of monogamy and despite never getting physical with Suguru/Kento the emotional aspect still makes them feel like they’re doing something dirty.
It wasn’t fair to anyone.
Shoko dryly mumbling about polygamy had Satoru and you instantly perking up.
You loved Suguru and Satoru liked Kento - but neither of them wanted to be in a relationship with each other. So this arrangement of Satoru’s boyfriend and (Y/N)’s boyfriend honestly worked. It was confusing at first but it worked.
When Satoru married Suguru and you married Kento, it was a joyous event. A double wedding!
A rowdy household once again, Satoru insisted on living on the same land just with multiple “sections”. Even if this was a polycule, I’d imagine solitude from one another is still appreciated after all. The house was built from the ground up and it was a labour of love to ensure all four of you (and your kids) would have their own slice of heaven.
Kento adores you, the rings on your fingers, and the home you share.
Satoru adores you as well, never once making you feel as though this is a competition.
Both Satoru and you are fair to each other and your respective husbands. Never favouring the other or anything that would make them feel like a “glorified side chick.”
The kids aren’t confused at all.
Although they did have to adjust to call which father what.
They settled with Dad (you), Papa (Suguru), Pa (Kento), and Father (Satoru - only to annoy him.) Sometimes the four of you will have to play it by ear since they just use “daddd!” interchangeably.
Shoko still takes shots before she heads over to go to holiday dinners.
The students are also not confused. Yuta got a bit flustered but Suguru just informed him about it and Yuta felt less anxious - he genuinely thought Satoru was cheating on (Y/N) when he walked in on Satoru and Suguru making out in an empty classroom.
You’d honestly just giggle at Yuta’s face when he told you this which made him more confused while Suguru gave him the mercy to pat his head.
Yuji would think it’d be so cool that such a dynamic worked.
Nanako and Mimiko as Tokyo High students make my heart soar - Megumi has his older sisters tease him relentlessly whenever their schedules overlap (they always do).

Max Unravelled
Unravelling Max's Mystery (Max Verstappen x Online Friend!Reader)
Series Masterlist
Summary- Max accidentally made an account on google plus in 2013. He came across a poetry page and enjoyed reading them. He ends up friends with the poet. He loved the normalcy she brought to his life. He didn't realise when the comfort he felt for her turned into love.
Tumblr media
{Max's POV}
2013
I was searching for something on my gmail account when a pop up for google plus came through; without much thought I clicked on it. Some how, I'm yet to figure that out, I ended up with a google plus account. One of the few accounts I got recommended was a poetry and story account. They wrote very eloquently; I could feel the emotions in every word. I started reading all their posts in my spare time and even commenting on the ones I liked. I found my self constantly checking back to their page to see if they posted something. Their poetry was relatable and understandable. I hope they always have a good day since their words always pick me up when I'm down.
The poet I had been enjoying so much is a girl, and her name is Y/N. She's around my age; I guess that's why I related to her work so much. We spoke for the first time ever on her birthday. She made a post about it being her birthday so I wished her. She was sad about not being able to enjoy her birthday, I felt bad for her so we talked for a while until dad called me to practise. That was the start of our friendship. We ended up talking on google plus a lot. We shared the same sense of humour and best of all, she didn't know about racing. It was like a breath of fresh air to not talk about racing. She doesn't even seem interested in it; so I can live as Max for a while now.
My birthday was shit but talking to her made everything better. I can't believe I got excited about talking to someone and that someone made me feel good even on one of my shittiest days. She's one of the nicest people I've had the pleasure of talking to. I really do wanna talk to her on phone, typing everything I want to say out feels tedious.
2014
I've gotten busier since this year with Formula 3. We barely get to talk anymore. She did send me her number and we chat on Whatsapp whenever we can. But obviously it is not the same. I've suggested talking on call a few time and she finally agreed; I just need to find the perfect time to get away from everything to talk to her. I felt so nervous to talk to her for some reason, what if she thought I was weird and didn't enjoy talking to me? What if she heard me and decided I wasn't fun? What if we had nothing to talk about? I called her while sitting in my driver's room, she picked up quite quickly after 2 rings to be exact.
Max- Hi, Y/N! Y/N- Hey, Max!! How are you? Max- I'm good, what about you? Y/N- Yeah, I'm good too. haha!! This is so weird talking to you. Max- yeah, you sound pretty. Why would I say that? That sounds so fucking creepy, I face palmed myself so hard. Y/N- You sound nice too. I mean....you have a nice voice. Max- haha, thanks, this is the first time some one has said that. She thinks I have a nice voice, do I? Y/N- soooo, what have you been up too?? You've been so busy lately. I could hear people outside the driver's room. I quickly locked the door before answering her question. Max- yeah, I've been busy with stuff. I'll be done soon for a while now. Y/N- That's great I need my best friend back! Did she just call me her best friend? I've never had a best friend before.
We ended up talking on calls a lot more. I would have her contact ringer saved with a separate ringtone so that I would know to answer it. She usually called at reasonable times, where ever I travelled as if she knew my schedule.
2015
I got signed with RedBull Racing's junior team, making me the youngest driver. It was such a surreal feeling. But this also meant I couldn't talk to Y/N as much as I wished I could. Training and the races kept me very busy. But she was very understanding and would always welcome me back, no matter how long I was gone for.
2021
The first time I'm regretting not telling what I do to Y/N was today when I won my first World Championship. I was surrounded by my team, my girlfriend and my family as I got out of the car after I finished P1 at Abu Dhabi but it felt strange; like I was missing someone. I wish I could share this win, the biggest in my life yet, with the person who makes me feel so special yet so myself.
When I asked her about Formula One, she didn't know about, she didn't even know the prominent figures. So, I wasn't as worried about her finding out but I did worry now; since my win was controversial according to the media. However, she never asked. Was she really unaware or playing dumb? I wasn't sure if I should be grateful I get to be just Max or sad that I can't share a huge part of my life with my best friend.
2023
Y/N and I have been friends for the past 10 years. Time really flies. I've gotten a lot better at balancing my personal and work life. Y/N is my well kept secret; like I'm the only one who knows her. She moved out for college and we've only video called since. She is still funny and still writes. I think it's so cool of her to stay passionate about what she loves and keeping at it. She loves my cats more than I love them sometimes, she get's so excited when I send pictures of them. She says they cheer her up and that Jimmy and Sassy are her virtual pets. They loved her too honestly, they would always recognise when she was on call and jump into my lap or the phone to see or hear her. She still doesn't know what I did for a living; we've kept that a 'secret' you could say. But really I just didn't know how to tell her I was a Formula One driver and a 2 time World Champion.
Today was like any other day, I hadn't spoken to Y/N at all. Whenever I called her, I would usually close/lock the door depending on who was at home. My girlfriend didn't know about Y/N. I didn't even know how to bring it up, honestly. I sat down on my SimRacing chair after I switched the livestream off. Her phone rang for a few times and then stopped ringing but she didn't answer the call. I tried again thinking maybe she was busy or didn't hear it. I called a couple times before texting her; no reply. I was freaking out. This was the first time in 10 years that she hasn't answered my calls. She won't even reply to my messages. I found myself pacing around the house. The door to the room opened to my girlfriend's daughter standing in front of me, "Maxie, why are you walking in circles?" She asked after observing me for sometime. "It's nothing" I said, trying to calm myself down more than give a reply to her question. All these horrible thoughts swirled through my mind; what if she was in an accident and no one knows? What if she got robbed? What if she hurt herself and can't get help? What was I supposed to do? I didn't even know where she lived. I just couldn't think straight. My hair was a mess with how much I was running my fingers through it, a few stands coming along when I almost pulled them out of frustration.
After 7 hours, she replied to my text. I had almost given up hope, but she said that she was fine and that her phone was about to die. I felt relieved knowing that she was ok. But the text was so out of character for her. I texted her everyday after that in hope of talking to her. We always spoke everyday and it had been years since we didn't speak for so long. Almost every text was left on delivered. I had a race this weekend which I won and went out to celebrate with everyone because they wanted me to tag along. I didn't see the text Y/N sent me a while after the race since I was at the club. I only saw it when I got home. As soon as I saw it, I called her. She answered after a few rings.
Max- Schat, how have you been? Haven't heard a word from you in days. You could clearly hear the worry in my voice. Y/N- I've been busy, school year ending and stuff. Why didn't you sleep yet? Max- You know my sleep schedule is non existent. Y/N- Yeah, I guess I do. What did she mean by that? Her voice seemed hoarse, was she sick?Y/N- You know how I do freelance editing Max- You've told me about it Y/N- The latest author I'm working with is a sports author. I was hoping you could help me since you are a walking encycylopedia. Max- sure schat, but what's up with you? You know I'm always there for you Y/N- Yeah it nothing, just stressed. Max- Take off, you deserve it I wish she took care of herself instead of working so hard without breaks. Y/N- The summer break is here soon, I'll be fine. So about that author... Max-Yeah, what sport does she write for? Y/N- Formula One. I don't really like reading lengthy articles and I'm sure one article wouldn't do a sport any justice. I felt the ground slip from under my feet. My palms had gotten sweaty suddenly. Max- You did not go through google yet, right? (I stammered out) Y/N- Oh no, what do you take me for? I got excited to learn about something new. Do you know who the reigning champion is? I felt like I was about to lose everything. I didn't know what to say, my mouth was dry. No matter what I said, I don't think I could fix this situation. Y/N- Some dude named Max Verstappen. You guys share the same first name. He has 2 cats too; named Jimmy and Sassy, who look exactly like your bengals. I mean he even looks like you, with horrible sleep schedule just like you. He even sounds like you. There was horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach and my lungs felt like there was no air in them. Watching her tear up was the worst feeling.
Max- Schatje, I can explain. Y/N- You don't have to Max. I never asked you what you did. You don't have to explain anything. Max- I wanted to tell you, it just never came up in conversation. Y/N- I get it, it's difficult to tell your friend who has amounted to nothing that you are the World Driver's Champion, best of the best in Formula One. Max- Y/N, it's nothing like that. You're great, you're kind, you're funny. She laughed, but that stung my heart for the first time when her laugh was my favourite sound in the world. Y/N- Those are character traits I possess, they don't describe my career goals or achievements. I know I work 2 jobs to stay afloat while you make millions, I know I wish I was an author and not their editor, I know you probably thought I was too stupid to understand your rich and fancy world. Max- No, no, you're so talented. I've read your work and I'm sure the right publication will pick your work up. Y/N- I got rejected for the sixth time today. All of this is fine except that you lied to me about being single while having a girlfriend for years and having the happy family you dreamt off. You didn't have to introduce me to her; not like my boyfriends met you. But it would've been nice if I knew. Max- It just never came up. (I held my head in shame) Y/N- I...we joked about setting you up with someone all the time. Please don't. I get it, we didn't tell each other about work goals or what we did as a job but personal life; I literally told you about every guy I've ever been with. I felt bad telling you thinking you were single. I feel stupid right now. I wanted to reach out and wipe her tears but I couldn't. Max- I'm sorry,Y/N. I promise I won't hide anything anymore. Please, don't cry. Y/N- My name is Y/N Y/L/N. I majored in literature in Uni and now work as a primary school teacher and freelance editor. I'm trying to get my book published soon. I broke up with my boyfriend 2 months ago. This fucking hurt, everything she said and the way she said it. Max- Please don't do this. Y/N- I believe at least one of us should be honest. Max- Let me fix this. Y/N- Don't worry. There's nothing to fix. Max- Please don't say that. You mean a lot me. (I felt tears in my eyes.) Y/N- Me too. That's why, I need time. I'll talk to you when I'm ready. Max- Please, I can't lose you. I felt like my world was crashing. Y/N- You won't. I'll always be there for you. I just need time. Take care Max I was crying as she said it. Max- Bye, take care Y/N. I'll always be here. And the screen blacked out, I could see my reflection on the screen, tears streaming down my face.
After I was able to clear my head I texted her telling her that I would always be there for her and I would like to clear up the misunderstanding when she's ready. I spent the next few months thinking about her. It was starting to affect my relationship. I couldn't really give my girlfriend time when my mind was occupied with thoughts of Y/N. When my girlfriend brought it up how we were growing apart; I had a fight with her. I don't know what came over me, but not talking to Y/N or not knowing what was up with her was making it very difficult for me to focus on anything. The fighting became a constant after that. I didn't understand why she couldn't let me be. I missed my friend but she wouldn't get it.
I was SimRacing when Y/N's name popped up on my phone asking me to call her. I guess she was ready to talk it out. I really wished that this wasn't the end of our friendship. I really hoped that we could get over the misunderstanding and still be friends. I told the team I had some work and called her immediately. She answered like always; I waited for her to speak with baited breath. She started talking and we cleared everything up. I apologised for hiding the truth from her. I told her how much of a constant she was for me in my ever hectic life; how talking to her made everything better. She listened to me, I listened to her and then finally asked her to come to my home race. I wanted to meet her. I couldn't live knowing that I had the resources but didn't meet the one person that mattered to me the most. She was hesitant at first but I offered to get her the tickets and insisted on her joining me at the biggest race of the season for me and finally she agreed. I was over the moon. As soon as we ended the call, I sent her the tickets. I found myself counting down the days to the race for the first time.
I was waiting for her at the airport when she got here. My heart was beating very fast as I waited for her to come out. When I saw her; she was beautiful, shorter than I expected but she looked cute with her bag in one hand and a back pack on her shoulder, her hair in a low bun, a small smile graced her feature. I don't think I've noticed anyone with such detail ever before. Our conversation flowed easily. It didn't feel like it was the first time we were meeting. I dropped her at the hotel and went off to do media duty's at the paddock when I came back she was still asleep, traveling must've tired her out. She got dressed while I waited for her to get ready, even giving my 2 cents on what she should wear. She looked gorgeous, I couldn't help myself, staring at her. The black satin dress hugged her curves in all the right places. Her hair flowed down her back, the jewellery sparkling against her body. We went to have dinner at a fancy dutch restaurant. She loved the food especially the apple tart. The moan she let out as she devoured the dessert made blood rush downwards. I found my cheeks heating up, thankfully the whole place was dimly lit. We walked around for a while after the meal, she made fun of my name but I couldn't care less. I apologised and she accepted it and hugged me. Her arms were soft and the embrace warm. I found myself wrapping my arms around her, my face buried in her neck. I was scared I was gonna lose her, forever. I've never been scared to lose anything but a race until now and the thought of not having her in my life seemed scary. She consoled me and we headed back to the hotel.
The rest of the weekend was uneventful except for my girlfriend being pissed; she fought with about Y/N. I don't get what her problem is, she's just a friend I've known since forever. I'm just showing her around. I was giving interviews when I saw her talking to Lando, I saw them laughing along in the corner of my eye. It made me feel strange, there was this feeling in the pit of my stomach and I didn't like it. When I got back, Lando had left since it was his turn. She found Lando cute and it irked me, I was annoyed hearing her ask me to set her up with him. We got back to RedBull hospitality when my girlfriend asked me to talk to her, I left with her reluctantly leaving Y/N with Checo.
"Listen Max, I get it, she's your childhood friend and all, but it's so weird how she suddenly cropped up when I or for that matter any one knew nothing about her. People are saying stuff about us since she stepped on the paddock and the way you are dragging her along." my girlfriend spoke. "What are people saying? I will not stand any slander against her" I cut her off. She laughed dryly. "WOW, they are saying stuff about us, Max, us, that you are cheating on me with her. You've been so distant for months until a month ago, I didn't know what went wrong and you wouldn't talk either." she said running a hand through her hair. "It's nothing really. She just knows me as Max and not Max Verstappen and that's why I'm closer to her. Nothing more." I said. "It's pointless talking to you" she said turning around. "If we're done, I'm leaving, Y/N doesn't know anyone here except me." I said leaving for the door. She huffed before she followed me out. Y/N looked worried about what was going on between me and my girlfriend but I calmed her down and we spent the day together. She tagged along during quali too. I saw her praying before quali, it made my heart swell. I was starting pole and we spent the night watching a movie even though Y/N wanted me to rest before the race, I wanted to make the most of the little time we had.
Y/N hugged me before the race wishing me. I wanted to win so bad, I'd won here twice before but this was different. I wanted to win in front of her. I raced like a mad man and then I heard it. I crossed first and my happiness knew no bounds; knowing she was watching. I got out of the car and immediately ran to her; hugging her. It was cathartic. Y/N said my girlfriend looked annoyed, but I couldn't care less. I watched my girlfriend leave, annoyed. When I received the trophy at the top step of the podium knowing she was watching me from below made it so much more worth it. Y/N wanted to go out to celebrate my win and I wasn't one to say no. I went back to the hotel to get cleaned up and ready for the night.
I was greeted by my girlfriend in the room, it was dimly lit as she was sat at the corner of the bed with tears streaming down her face. "HOW COULD YOU DO THAT MAX?" she screamed at me. "Am I a fucking joke? I let it slide, you said you were friends but the first person you go to after winning your race was her, what do you think people were whispering when you did that?" she said in between sobs. I didn't get what she was saying. "Do you like her?" she asked. "What? We're friends" I stated. She shook her head, "No, Max, you aren't. The way she looks at you is how I look at you. The way you look at her" She cried, "You've never looked at me like that" she lamented. "It's nothing like that" I began. "You should've respected me at the very least and broken up with me if you liked someone else, I'm not gonna be some girl's place holder till you can have her." she cried out. "You're not a place holder for her" I said. "Feels exactly like that" she said wiping her tears. I felt nothing my 2 year long relationship might be ending and I didn't care. I didn't even try to correct her, did I really like her? Was Y/N really more important to me? "We're through Verstappen, if you can't even fight for us, I'm not about to fight for us" she sighed dejected. I walked towards the bathroom to wash up while she packed up to leave. When I got out she was gone. I went to pick Y/N up.
She kept asking me about my girlfriend but I never told her that we broke up. I didn't want her to feel responsible for my decision. At the club, she got close to everyone pretty quickly. She was unstoppable, downing one drink after another. I hadn't touched alcohol since I was driving. The others kept handing her drinks much to my dismay. She asked me to come dance with her but I had the others to look after too. She was busy dancing surrounded by too many guys, one of them going as far as to touch her and grind against her. All I saw was red, I bid the guys good bye and stormed the dance floor to drag a reluctant Y/N with me; I ended up carrying her out on my shoulder. She wasn't very happy, screaming and hitting me till I put her down. She puked as soon as I put her down and joked about missing my expensive car, I didn't really mind if she hadn't since she was more important than the car. I got her medicine and left them at her side after putting her to bed.
We spent the next few days after the race sight seeing. Y/N brought up my girlfriend a few time and I ended up avoiding her. When we were cuddling while watching Barbie I felt my heart beating out of my chest as she scooted closer to grab tissue. When her hand brushed against my skin, it burnt and a weird feeling erupted in my chest. She seemed completely unaware of how she was making me feel. We fell asleep on the couch that night.
I wasn't able to avoid the girlfriend question any longer and told her that we broke up without making any eye contact on the way to drop her to the airport. My eyes stung and there was a lump in my throat; I wasn't sure it was because of my girlfriend or Y/N. I bid her farewell, she would turn back towards me to wave after every few steps; my eyes were blurry after sometime trying to prevent the tears from falling. I ended up crying after she left.
All the races after, I ended up going shopping after or before every race to collect some trinkets or stuff that was special to that place and mailing it to her with small notes attached. She would graciously open them in front of me on video call; the smile she gave me the first time she received was unparalleled. It made my stomach turn over. I wanted to make her smile every chance I got. That's how I ended up sending her a package after every race from every country until I got reprimanded by her for the excessive amount of gifts. She asked me not to send one after every race and stick to one or two in total; I was forced to agree to that request.
We were planning on spending Christmas and New Year together; she wanted to leave after Christmas but I was able to convince her to stay until I had to leave for pre-season training. I couldn't wait for the season to end and to spend the year end with Y/N. We celebrated me winning the championship on video call; even though I had hoped she could be present in person but it wasn't possible with her schedule. This championship felt better than the last two since I was able to celebrate it with her. 2021 me wouldn't believe me right now.
Y/N flew in as soon as winter break started for her. I had cleaned up the house as much as possible. I had told my cats about Y/N visiting who seemed excited. I picked her up from the airport and when we got home the cats were very excited to meet her; a lot more receptive than the other guests I've had over. We spent the next few days going to places and the Monaco GP circuit. She cribbed about walking the entire time we walked the path. It made me laugh.
The night before Christmas we fell asleep on the couch cuddling; I hadn't slept this well in a very long time. When I woke up, Y/N was no where to be seen. I sat up waiting for her to return when she came back, she looked so cute in her jumper and shorts with her hair a mess. We opened up presents after some time. She had gotten me a Sid plushie, an ugly sweater and perfume. I got her a Formula One book with my face, a coffee mug and a pendant. I wanted to get her more stuff but I was sure she would make me return it if she saw every thing. I think the house would be over run with the amount of stuff I wanted to get her. Then she brought the matching sweater she got with me; I put it on immediately. I wanted to match with her all the time. We had a bit of back and forth on the dinner but agreed on Turkish kabab.
New Year came too quickly, which meant Y/N would be leaving soon. We went clubbing on New Year eve. She didn't drink like the last time we were at the club but made friends with some of the guys there. Having a social butterfly for a friend was a bad idea. We counted the time down to midnight as the clock struck 12 and I turned towards her to celebrate I saw she was kissing one of the guys she had befriended when we entered. If the club was quite you could hear my heart shatter. That's when I realised that all these weird feeling and all the times I couldn't stop thinking about her was because I liked her, no scratch that, I loved her. I felt my heart constrict when she turned towards me and hugged me later. I didn't want to talk about it, this would ruin our friendship.
All I could think about was how it felt to watch her kiss another man. I hated it, the worst feeling, worse than DNFing or not winning. I hated knowing another man could touch her and feel her. I wasn't even sure how to bring it up since what were we if not just friends. I put myself into training for the upcoming season but those feelings I felt when she kissed another man were still fresh in my head and I couldn't get rid of them even if I tried.
I was able to convince her to join me during her spring and summer break. We had fun, I loved having her waiting for me at the end of the race. I didn't really enjoy all the media questions that had cropped up about Y/N when she was seen with me, before or after the race. During my summer break, I spent it at her place. When I got there, it was a small apartment; but it had a homely feel. She would cook food for me and we would watch movies; I had a few commitments with the team and would leave for some time but then be back. It was so nice to have some one to come home to. When she was having her book launch, I went to meet her at her launch with a bouquet of flowers. "Congratulations" I said while handing her the flowers and giving her a hug. "Thank you" she replied, a smile playing on her lips. We had celebratory dinner after. Immediately after that, we were on the news. It read that I had a girlfriend, she kept apologising but it didn't matter. It made me a little warm, I'm not sure what emotions I felt hearing people speculate that she was my girlfriend.
I flew back to Netherland for the race early, she would only be joining me on the race day due to work. It dampened my mood but there wasn't much I could do about it. She flew in the morning of the race; it made my day watching her walk out of the airport. We talked all the way to the hotel where she got changed and we headed to the paddock. I had thought it through; after the qualifying, I had planned on telling her how I felt. I was gonna win this race and confess to her. Knowing that I can't hold her while someone else can was eating away at me and I wanted to take the chance before it slipped away from me.
I started the race P2 and finished it at P2. In the final laps, the only thoughts running through my head were, I really wanted to ask her out as a race winner, I can't do that now. She probably doesn't even like me like that, did I really want to ruin everything I had with her. I stumbled out of the car towards her, a big smile on her face. And suddenly I said it; "I wanted to ask you out as a race winner" emotions were running high. She insisted me to continue and when I did, she agreed to go out with me. I was over the moon, my head was reeling. This race ending was not what I hoped for but Y/N's answer was something I really was hoping for.
She waited for me in the driver's room. I couldn't help but not touch her. Her skin against mine send electric shocks through me, I couldn't help but smile at the feeling of her against me. I wanted to have this feeling for the rest of the life. I wanted to have her next to me; it took me a while to figure that out but now that I had, I didn't want to let go. I loved her and I wanted her.
We were both in the hotel room at the end of night in each other’s embrace, "Can't believe you're my boyfriend" she exclaimed. "Can't believe you're my girlfriend either." I exclaimed back. "I've liked you since I've known you" she mumbled. "What?" I asked shocked. "Yeah, I've always had a crush on you. Teenage me would lose it right now if she saw" she said. "I'm sorry it took me so long" I muttered pressing a kiss against her lips. "better late then never" she laughed wrapping her arms around my neck, flipping me to straddle my hips. She bent down to kiss me again.
I could spend the rest of my life like this, if it meant I could have her forever.
Hope you had fun. Thank you for enjoying the story!!

Feeling Like I Do
neighbour!yunho x reader
best friends to lovers au
word count: 5k (bulletpoint headcanons this time)
genres: fluff, absolute fluff, a little crack, a little angst, some suggestive jokes thrown around, just wholesomeness and yuyu
synopsis: you and yunho have been best friends since forever and neighbours for a while, and you find it harder with each passing day to hide your feelings for him.
manager-nim: @eightmakesonebraincell (this took way too long to finish considering the deep yunho brainrot we've been in)
special thanks to @hwaightme your guy.exe triggered this hehe
Tumblr media
being best friends with jeong yunho was not as simple as it sounded
especially when he was your neighbour
like, right next door. the very next apartment
so you couldn’t avoid him even if you wanted to
honestly, you brought this upon yourself, if you think about it
ever since you were kids, you had been inseparable
from going to the same school and bonding over a similar sense of humour
from pranking the rest of your friends together to making fun of each other
to knowing each other’s deepest secrets
except for the one that really mattered- that you had the biggest, fattest crush on your best friend
honestly, you do not recall when exactly it happened
if you think back, you can’t pinpoint it to one moment
it is a number of moments, the years you spent together, the memories you shared that you are now a grown up and still hopelessly in love with him
though you would not admit it
never. ever. over your dead body.
you just have one fear that has stuck with you and it is that you do not want to ruin things between the two of you
he has known you since forever. he knows you inside out.
he’s too precious to lose over something as stupid as your feelings
because if he does not feel the same, you will never be whole again
but if by some small chance he does and you mess things up later? you would never recover
this is why you think having feelings for your best friend is so messed up
and this is the reason you always dismiss his flirty actions as jokes between two best friends who are super comfortable with each other
like when he casually enters your unlocked apartment and asks for a pinch of salt and spots you in the ugliest fit you’re wearing
he will go “wow you look beautiful”
and you will make a face, knowing he is joking, and ignore the butterflies in your stomach
and you respond with “you don’t look too bad yourself” when he himself looks like he nests a squirrel in his hair
his casual touches and occasionally flirty gazes do not bother you anymore
you’re made of steel now
so when he hugs you out of nowhere or swings you around just to hear you squeal, you know it’s just what friends do
or when he finds you too adorable and kisses your temple, you let it pass. you don’t read too much into it
though occasionally, you like to blur the lines too. he might know at this point
like what friend runs to their other friend only to jump in their arms and bury their face in the crook of the other’s neck?
what sort of friend casually zones out while staring at the other and wonders what they did to deserve them?
you
perhaps, this was a teenage crush that would have quelled with time- but that was if you had parted ways for college
no
by some evil play of the fates, you two ended up in the same city, quite close to each other
and as soon as you two had enough savings, you both decided to be neighbours
you just didn’t have it in you to be apart from each other
and funny thing was, no one batted an eye. it was so natural
though they did question why you weren’t housemates
you and yunho would always share a grin and respond with ‘to protect the last shred of privacy’
which was an inside joke now
so when you both started living together- because that’s exactly what it was
from going grocery shopping together
to knowing each other’s door locks
dropping in stuff for the other without their permission
privacy? ha. what privacy?
sure, you almost once walked in on him showering
and he almost walked in on you changing your clothes (your fault you didn’t shut the door, right?)
but that wasn’t a big deal at all
you would slide notes under each other’s doors- cute reminders to take an umbrella or a good morning/good night
or an ugly doodle or a ‘u stink’
you did not collect all those notes in a jar. you did not
he once bought 10 rubber duckies and hid them around your apartment and you would find them in the most odd places
like inside a pot you rarely use
one was even in your underwear drawer
whenever you’d find one, you would take it with you whenever you went to yunho’s and hide it somewhere there
and so the eternal game of hide and seek began
you have never talked about it out loud by the way
the more memorable things were just making yourself at home at the other’s place when one of you did not feel like being alone
which was most of the time, if you were very honest with yourself
you would watch tv together while you had dinner and have a heated discussion about whatever you were watching
or you would play games with him
or he would help you pick out your fit for the night
or you would style his hair
or you two would stay up all night talking about stuff
about anything and everything
emptying out your hearts
yet still you would always have more to talk about
it was never a boring moment with yunho
and you could go on about why you loved him forever
every day, you woke up glad that he was so close to you and still with you
he was the only person who did not judge you
you could say something nasty and he would still try to understand your perspective
which just made him 100000x more precious
but he would call you out when you did or said something wrong/bad but in a very gentle manner
which you appreciated so much
and the best thing was, he always stayed. he was always there
his arms were your eternal safe space
and he knew
it was like he knew the look in your eyes, whenever you needed a hug
and he would spread his arms and you would walk to him and wrap your arms around his waist while he embraced you
and tell you that it would be okay, no matter what was going on
he would always offer to hear you out or simply be there, physically
he was just… so easy to be with
he was your personal ray of sunshine, your little fluffy cloud, yours
he was yours- oh, how you wished he could be yours in all the ways
because whenever he talked about someone he noticed with you
or just looked at someone different and then find you staring at him
he’s respond with “i just like their outfit” or “i think their hair is nice”
and you would wonder if it’s really just that
you two do have an unspoken promise to tell each other whenever you start dating someone or fall in love
but that’s mostly because you both know your dynamic would have to change a bit
because you two wouldn’t be each other’s priority anymore- not like you are now anyway
and it hurts to just think about it
you asked him, “what would really change?”
and he responded with, “i would appreciate it if you do not connect your bluetooth to my speakers when i have someone over and play some unholy audio”
which turned into an argument because he has literally done the same to you and you had a friend over
you had to explain yourself and explain yunho and tell the traumatised friend that this was just him pulling a prank on you
but you responded with “you know what i will also appreciate if the person does not find a potato instead of a soap in the sink”
you two are always out for each other and after all these years… you two never know each other’s next move
but you both know your dynamics would change in more ways than that
you wouldn’t be able to stroll in his apartment so casually and make breakfast for the two of you because you ran out of ingredients
neither would he be able to come and take a shower in your apartment because “i ran out of hot water” or “i want to smell like strawberries today”
you wouldn’t be able to go and sleep on his couch or bed because you felt lonely
neither would he be able to do the same
and you both would have to tone down the physical affection because you two have heard enough about people mistaking you for a couple
honestly, sometimes you wonder if those people gaslit you into seeing him as something more
but… it was yunho. how could you not?
especially when he cared for you like no one else?
and maybe, maybe, just maybe
he thought of you like that sometimes too
it was probably wishful thinking but oh, how you wished he did anyway
because you couldn’t take it sometimes
you couldn’t take how he would zone out while listening to you talk and look absolutely adorable
you couldn’t take how when you’d hold hands while walking he’d caress them absently
and you couldn’t take how he’d play with your hands when you’d tell him about your day or some gossip
you couldn’t take it when he’d sneak up on you and wrap his arms around you in a back hug and make you feel so small and safe
or when he’d rest his head on yours as you hugged
you couldn’t take it when his gaze would linger on you a fraction of a second longer when you were too close
or when he would always search your eyes before he would plant a chaste kiss on your cheek or forehead
you really, really couldn’t take it anymore
perhaps you needed therapy now
you couldn’t afford slipping in front of yunho tho
or anyone of your mutual friends for that matter
because you knew if someone found out they would somehow let yunho know
and you weren’t ready for his answer
what if he distanced himself from you if he ever found out? you couldn’t have that
perhaps you should have physically distanced yourself from him
perhaps being neighbours made it worse
tho, could you call it worse when it was literally a blessing to have him so close to you?
you’re starting to question it tho
bc one night when you were out drinking late with your friends
you came back to your apartment complex, feeling so low
and when you were about to cross yunho’s door to get to your own, you paused
you paused and stood outside his door for the longest time
and then you sank down and rested your back against his door
wishing he wouldn’t find you
you just needed to cry a little and lighten the weight on your heart
except, another evil play of fates and yunho somehow just knew to look for you
he almost opened his door but heard the faint sound of your cries
at first he thought it was a lost kitten or something but then he opened his door a fraction and found your figure on the floor
and his heart broke
“y/n? can you please move a little so i can open the door?”
you froze
until he called your name again and you wished you could dig the ground and bury yourself under it
but you moved and not a few seconds later, he was next to you and rubbing your back
“what’s wrong?”
“nothing,” you replied
except there was a lot
you just couldn’t tell him
just like the various times he found you crying alone and no matter how much he insisted, you wouldn’t tell him
he wondered who hurt you sometimes
he wondered who it was so he could punch that person or do anything, something, to make it all right
because he hated it so much when you cried
it made his chest feel tight and he’d always get confused about what he was feeling
a number of things is what it was- anger, longing, pain, confusion
but this time? he wasn’t going to let you go
because just how long had you been crying like this? why didn’t you just come inside? why didn’t you find him?
he asked you that
you couldn’t reply yet again
so he decided to bring you inside
he made you drink some water
he wiped your face with the sleeves of his black shirt
and you finally looked at him
oh goodness. he was wearing those black rimmed glasses again
the ones that made him look so, so good.
but he looked angry
“you’re going to tell me who made you cry. or else we’ll be sitting here just like this all night while i wait for your answer”
you bit your lips, looking away and cursing yourself internally
you should have cried in the shower or something
“can i rest? my head is spinning- i might have drank too much-”
“no.”
you locked eyes with him and he didn’t look away
“do you have any idea how much it hurts me to see you like this? and how much it hurts me that you stayed outside? why didn’t you come to me?”
you looked away again, wiping the fresh stream of tears
it was getting harder now, to not give in. to not answer his questions and put an end to this once and for all
especially with yunho so close to you and caressing your bare knees that you put between the two of you
“tell me”
“i can’t”
“why not?”
“because…” you sighed deeply. you looked at him
if you weren’t drunk, every cell in your brain would have screamed at you to shut up
but because you were, it was now your heart tugging that did it for you
“don’t look at me like that, yunho.”
yunho only cocked his head, refusing to look at you any other way
you snaked your hands up your knees to meet his hands, locking your fingers
“you can’t distract me this time-”
yunho’s words got caught in his mouth when you started to lean forward and he drew back reflexively, looking at you questioningly
but you weren’t going to stop
he wanted answers? he would have them
so you continued to lean forward until you were on your knees and almost in his lap
you looked down at him, meeting his very confused eyes
“do you ever think about why i don’t come to you at these times? do you really not know the answer?”
you watched his ears flush
he knew
he must know
he must have a hint, at least, of what you felt for him
“is it really me?” he whispered
you didn’t answer this time
you couldn’t
you simply dropped down with a sigh and pulled your hands from his
he was so confused- he had no way to navigate through this without your help
but you were drunk right now
he decided you should at least be sober when you talk
and perhaps, you decided that too
so you resorted to climbing in his lap and holding him in a hug
he didn’t waste any time wrapping his arms around you
and planting a kiss on your head
just like he had done a thousand times now
“i’m sorry for making you worried,” you mumbled, burying your face in his sweatshirt, hearing his heartbeat
“i’m sorry for sounding angry- i didn’t mean to.”
“i know,” you assured him. “can i sleep here?”
“of course-”
“right here?”
yunho wished you would say such things with a warning because his heart dropped dangerously and he couldn’t help but let out a flustered laugh
“am i that comfortable?”
“you’re literally my human pillow”
and just like that, you were both back to normal
but yunho made sure not to let you forget about this
in the morning when you woke up before him and noticed him sleeping in a painful position to accommodate you on the couch
you watched him for the longest time
and snuck out to go back to your apartment and really panic this time
because boi, did you mess up this time
and it was the weekend. yunho would be up and asking questions in no time
you had nowhere to hide
perhaps, you should stop hiding now
the doorbell rang and for a moment you wondered if it was someone else
but when you opened the door to yunho with a bowl of soup in his hands, you knew he rang the doorbell for a reason
he would be asking you questions today
so you let him in, wondering how he would initiate the conversation
“i bet you have the worst headache now,” he goes, grinning like everything is normal
you didn’t realise he was being normal so you would lower your defences while you ate and chatted like normal
until he finally asked, “are we going to talk about what happened last night?”
“what happened last night?” you ask back
it was perhaps the wrong thing to say
because you see yunho’s gaze darken
you immediately sigh to let him know that yes, you know exactly what he is talking about
you did not like to see him angry so you decided to face what was next
but… anxiety started to creep in your chest as you looked at him, waiting for him to say something
“can you please tell me why you were crying last night? why did you not come and find me?”
you sigh deeply again, pursing your lips as you look at him
because you could feel it
this was it
it would never be the same again
you spend a few minutes staring at him, opening your mouth to say something but stopping, and then looking away and recalling exactly where you fucked up
and he’s so patient. he keeps waiting
he’s not even fiddling with anything right now. he’s just… there and watching you and waiting
you finally lock eyes with him and say, “have you ever wanted something so bad that in order to gain it, you risk losing it completely?”
yunho thinks it’s really cryptic, what you just asked him
because… yes, he’s wanted something that bad too
he didn’t realise it until the first summer he did not spend with you a few years ago
and he felt so lost until he saw you and everything started to make sense
and everything has made sense since
he’s wanted to make you smile every moment you spend with him
he’s wanted to embrace you eternally every moment you find home in his arms
he’s wanted to make you laugh because of all the sounds in this world, your laugh was his favourite
even tho it sounded like windshield wipers
he’s wanted you so, so bad
but how could he ever admit it
suddenly, he understand you
and he finds himself nodding slowly, his heart beating with an urgency indicating the arrival of a change
it could make or break you both
so he says, “yes… yes i know exactly how that feels”
you both watch each other for a few moments, afraid to take the next step
but yunho won’t give in now- he doesn’t want to see you cry like that ever again
“is that why you were upset? you’ve been mulling over something like this?”
you’re hesitant but you nod
so he leans forward as if to hold your hands from across the table but he stops himself
and asks, “why have you been so afraid to tell me this?”
it’s silent. very silent
only the sounds of your breath in the room
and the sound of your heart in your ears
with a gulp, you manage to say, “because… because i’m afraid of being selfish and losing you in the process.”
for a few seconds, yunho is frowning in confusion as he tries to make sense of what you said
and you see exactly when realisation hits him
when his features relax and his gaze clears and his mouth parts as he look at you
you don’t look away. you’re waiting for him to say something, to respond, to hurt you with what he’ll say next, anything
but he looks away and lets out a flustered laugh and you can’t help but let out your own nervous laugh as well
you watch his ears flush and his lips curl downwards as he stifles a smile
and you finally cry out, “say something, you idiot.”
yunho puts a hand over his mouth as he stares at you
and suddenly, you feel hot all over. the embarrassment is catching up to you
“are you telling me, y/n, that you like me? that you… actually want me?”
you blush furiously and you’re almost sweating now but you manage to nod
and yunho is laughing in disbelief again and you’ve had enough
you get up, muttering about getting a drink but yunho is quick to catch your wrist and pull you towards him
and you’re suddenly too close
he’s searching your eyes
“you want me?”
you give him a pleading look and he understands
he brings an almost trembling hand to your face, tucking your hair behind your ear first
“i need you to say it, y/n. because i-”
“yes,” you nod, “yes, i want you. is it too much to ask for? have i ruined things?”
yunho shakes his head and lets go of your wrist only to cup your face and you try to decipher the look in his eyes
it is not the first time he has looked at you this way but this time it’s a bit different
“do you have any idea how much i’ve wanted you since forever?”
you think you’re hearing things
because there is no way
there is absolutely no way
that jeong yunho- your best friend- wants you
“you’re not joking, are you?” is your response and yunho laughs a bit before he leans in, watching your breath get caught in your throat when he gazes at you
and then his gaze is stuck on your lips and he’s waiting
and now your hands are moving out of their own accord, snaking up to his chest to fist his black sweatshirt
his nose brushing against yours undoes something in you
“yunho, please,” you manage to whisper
and then he finally pecks your lips
it’s cautious, it’s soft, and it’s nothing like you imagined it to be because you’re feeling a number of things
he scans your face briefly before he pecks your lips again, this time longer
and then he does it again and you’re finally moving your hands and tilting your face up so he can properly kiss you
and there’s no need for words anymore
the unspoken actions are enough
you open your mouth and he dives right in, kissing you eagerly
your knees were already weak so you struggle to stay upright but he’s quick to catch you
his arms are holding you to him and you’re the one cupping his face now as you kiss
it is years of longing and love poured into this kiss and none of you want to stop
but you eventually break apart for breath and then you realise exactly what position you both are in
and suddenly, you’re both laughing, too shy to look at each other and you hide your face in his chest
he’s caressing your back while you recover and when you look up, he’s got the most loving look in his eyes
“what took you so long to do that, y/n?”
“i could ask the same,” you respond. “i could cry right now.”
yunho laughs, planting a kiss on your forehead. “well. how do you feel?”
you hug him, taking deep breaths
“i think we should really talk,” you laugh
he steers you to the couch but he makes you sit in his lap so he can caress your face or play with your hair while you talk
and you can’t because he’s looking at you with the softest gaze ever
so you just ask him since when he started liking you- does he like you?
he tells you about how he, too, has been afraid to ruin things
and talks about how he thought you liked someone else
you ask him if he never got the hint
but you both know how wary you two have been, especially lately
never reading too much into things
perhaps one of you should have
“i’m sorry i made you suffer like that,” yunho finally says to let the weight off his shoulders. “i never realised you were hurting because of me.”
you tell him it’s not his fault and that if he did not like you back you would have been hurt, yes, but you would have dealt with it
except you are so lucky that he feels the same way about you
you can’t believe it, actually
you trace the curves of yunho’s face
it’s like you’re looking at each other for the first time now
“i’m yours,” he whispers when you finally look him in the eyes. “i’ve always been yours.”
you can’t help the tears now
they are tears of relief and sheer happiness
and yunho understands because he’s pretty sure he will cry soon too
he lets you pepper kisses on his face
and holds you when you hug him again
“good thing it’s the weekend, right? we can stay like this all day long.”
and you do
you have nothing you’d rather do
you stay in each other’s arms, talk about everything and anything, caress each other’s hands (mostly you bc you love his hands), makeout in between
and it’s so natural
nothing has changed- it’s just like before but better
you’re still joking around and teasing each other like before
he still passes a ‘ur ugly <3’ or a ‘what a mess’ note under your door
and you still respond with an explicit drawing
the suggestive jokes have levelled up tho
he always catches you off-guard with them and you either blush furiously or send something flying at him
a few things have changed tho
like when he finds you in the kitchen and gives you a back hug
this time he’s quick to sneak in a kiss and maybe nibble at your neck
sometimes it turns into a heated makeout session
other times you ask him to stop so you can focus on cooking but he keeps distracting you until you’re running after him with a wooden ladle
and you two can’t stay away from each other now- you couldn’t anyway but this time it’s different
this time when you crawl in his bed at night time, he is quick to spoon you
and now he does not hesitate to find you in your apartment too, at night
earlier he used to keep a distance for the sake of you both- you realise how now
now he doesn’t sleep in the corner of the bed with the excuse that he likes it
he has to hold you while sleeping
and he has to mutter dirty little things to rile you up too
when your friends find out, they’re not surprised at all
they’re disappointed it took you two this long
they call you both dumb and dumber and perhaps, they’re right
but perhaps… this was the right time
there is a time for everything, you realise
and it took you and yunho years of being together to realise that yes
you are meant for each other and no one else :’)
he’s your best friend, your other half, and your soulmate
he is yours <3

spencer reid x morgan!reader
note: i got carried away with this one...
warnings: Sarah calls Spencer 'freaky' (lovingly), murder, eating/food

Spencer was showing the girl’s his ‘physics magic’ when he got a little too comfortable and almost hit Hotch on his way into the bullpen. The girl’s pretended to not be involved as Hotch picked up the ‘rocket’ and looked at Spencer, “Physics magic?” “Yes, sir.” “Reid, we talked about this.” “I’m sorry, sir.”
The tense air in the room dissipated when Hotch placed the ‘rocket’ on the young man’s desk and said, “You’re starting to get some distance on those.”
The girls gathered back around the desk seemingly to have forgotten whatever they were doing that made them innocent to the physics magic happening.
“So he does have a sense of humour?” “Sometimes.” Spencer replied back to Emily, him and Y/n always seemed to be able to get him out of his usual stoic nature.
“So hey. Where’s the Morgans?” The brunette woman asked, Spencer once again had the answer, “Chicago. They go every year for their mother’s birthday.”
-
Derek and Y/n were walking out of the corner store and they got a couple things for their older sister, Sarah, before heading back home.
“You really think she’s got enough butter?” “Hey, y’know Sarah, if she doesn’t put it on the list, she doesn’t need it. She doesn’t make mistakes.” The younger girl said sarcastically, before they turned the corner to see Rodney and his guys.
“Y/n! Lookin’ good. I mean, damn, you’ve filled out in all the right places since you left.” “Step off, Rodney. Y/n/n get in the car.” “C’mon, D.” “I said get in the car.” Y/n accepted the defeat, whenever they got back to Chicago it was back to when they were kids, Y/n was a young helpless girl until big brother Derek came to the rescue.
“That’s okay, baby, I’ll get with you a little later, huh?” “In your dreams, Rodney.” “Most definitely. All night long, baby girl.”
Big brother Derek made his presence known, “You better step off before I make you wish you never walked up on me.” “Oh what? You two some bad-asses now ‘cause they pay you to wear that gun, Mr and Miss F.B.I?” “Rodney, he’s proved before he doesn’t need a gun to take you out.” “Past history? That’s a dangerous thing for you to count on, baby.” “Rodney. Walk away.”
Rodney laughs in Derek’s face, “Y/n/n, I’ll get at you a little later.” “Go to hell.” Rodney and his guys left around the corner, Derek motioned with his arm to get in the car, “C’mon, I’ll take you home. Then there’s something I gotta do.”
-
The five of them sat around the dinner table as Desi brought the cake in from the kitchen and Derek counted them in. “One, two, three” And they all sang happy birthday to their mom.
Their mom, of course, couldn’t have a moment just about her, even after Derek said ‘Go ahead, momma’ she didn’t blow out the candles before praising her second youngest’s effort.
“Did you make this yourself?” Desi replied, “Oh, Sarah and Y/n helped me.” “Momma, they wouldn’t let me help so I don’t know how good it’s gonna taste.” Derek said, teasing his sisters. But Sarah always made sure to put D in his place, “Oh, no, no, you remember that Christmas fiasco of 1994?”
“I remember that.” “The fire!” “Oh, that was bad.”
“Whatever, that was 12 years ago! Let it go!” “No, no, no, we still get cards from the fire department.” “Serious?” Y/n asked from her spot next to her older sister.
“Mama, you see how they treat your baby boy?” “You be good to your brother.” “Uh-huh, what she said!” “You got the ‘baby’ part right at least.” Y/n mumbled, intended for Sarah to hear but she spoke a little loud.
“Okay you know what?” “Hey!" “You better watch out!” The siblings fought over the table. “What? What?” “All right!”
Their fighting could only be put to rest by their mom. And when she did, they got back to her blowing out her candles, “Okay, wish, a wish..”
And cheering began as their mom finally blew out her candles.
-
“What is it?” The siblings laughed from their scattered places on the couch, watching their mom open her gifts. It was Derek’s turn and he explained to their mom what he got her and how she can use it. After some teasing Sarah and Desi started cleaning up a little so Y/n and Derek could catch up more with their mom since they don’t get to see her as much.
“We miss you two around here.” “I know.” Y/n leant her head on the older woman’s shoulder as she was holding Derek’s hand. Derek usually covered this for them, he knew Y/n felt guilty for not being around more so he was always the one to explain it to their mom.
“You’re careful right? I lost your dad. I can’t lose you two.” “You won’t.” “And watch after this one she was always the trouble maker.” “I do.”
She patted her son’s hand before she got back to the teasing, something the Morgan’s were very good at, “Good, cause you owe me some grandbabies.” “Look at her, she’s got the genius wrapped around her finger.” “D, give that up!”
This was not the first time their mom had heard about Spencer. Derek loved bringing it up to deflect questions off of him.
"That Doctor you work with? Are you two together now? Why didn't you mention it, baby?"
But suddenly a loud and persistent knocking on the door broke the family from their chatter. “Saved by the bell! Get it, D, you’re closest.” Detek swatted at his little sister before getting the door. And it was Sheriff Gordinski.
“Gordinski?” “You armed?” “Excuse me?” “Are you wearing a gun?” “No, not right now.” “Then turn around.” Derek laughed, he’s an FBI agent who does Gordinski think he is? Was all Y/n could think.
“You’re under arrest, Derek.”
-
“C’mon Wally, you got to tell me something, my team is on the case!” “I don’t answer to you, Morgan.” “You called in FBI? I’m FBI.”
The woman was standing, towering over Wally as he sat on his desk not giving her a second glance, he never respected her and he wasn’t gonna start now.
“Special Agent Hotchner, FBI, I’m looking for-” He brilliant and stoic voice of her boss, Hotch, cut through the background chatter of the station.
Y/n quickly discarded Wally after seeing the team making her way over to them and interrupting an officer at his desk that Hotch originally asked, “Oh, Hotch- Chuck, I got this.” She liked Chuck. He was one the alright guys, he’d helped her get out of a lot back in the day.
“How’re you guys doing? I’m Wally Dennison, CPD.” “Unimportant. The only reason he’s left hand man is ‘cause he does whatever Gordi tells him to.” Hotch seemingly moved right past the comment, “Where’s Agent Morgan?” “Detective Gordinski’s in with the suspect now.” “I need to see him.” And for the millionth time, Wally gets in over his head and has no idea what and where his place is. As he walked away the girl mumbled, “I don’t like them calling D a ‘suspect’” into JJ’s shoulder as the older woman gave her a side hug.
-
Gordinski finally came out from wherever he was, letting Hotch go in to talk to Derek. Gordi went on to tell Gideon how helpful his profile was in arresting Derek. Worst part was he never cared to hide his distaste for the man, calling Derek a ‘son of a bitch’. That racist bastard! Was all Y/b could think.
Spencer could see the signs of anger in Y/n the way she was scratching her skin, he always hated it when she did it. Luckily she only did when she was mad, which was not a lot, but right now she was really mad. Spencer cut her off when he saw she was going to say something that definitely shouldn’t come out of an FBI agent’s mouth.
“Detective, a profile’s just a guide.” “This one guided me to him.” “They’re really more useful in the elimination of suspects-” “Not the inclusion. Gordi, you got the wrong guy.” She mumbled, not quietly.
Gordinski walked the team through his flawed work, he showed them the coincidences he’s found and the circumstantial evidence he’s collected.
Spencer reached down and grabbed Y/n’s hand from where it was scratching her skin and brought it towards him to hold, biether thought too much of the gesture, but JJ did and made sure she’d tell Garcia about it when this was all cleared up.
“There are key pieces of the profile that don’t fit, Detective. The age, 25-35, Morgan was 15 or so at the time.” “Also says that age is the hardest to predict.” He had a point there, “-And I should never exclude someone simply because of a discrepancy with the age.”
“What about the speculation that since he didn’t manage to leave any evidence at the scene of the crime that he most likely has a criminal record or previous law enforcement knowledge? Derek wasn’t even in the bureau yet when the first body was found.”
She knew Gordi was gonna break the news so Y/n did it for him, maybe that in some way will she Gordinski that Derek wasn’t hiding that, “Derek, had a criminal record.”
-
Gordinski was back at his desk now, the team had a quiet discussion without his input. Finally.
“Y/n, you bring Prentiss and Reid to talk to your family. Learn all about him, especially at the time of the first murder.”
“I don’t have a car, one of the cops brought me down.”
“I can take you.” Wally seemed to cut in out of nowhere, and with how much he annoys Y/n she was quick to jump on him for it, “Wally, we don’t need-” “No, actually, that’s not a bad idea.” Gideon said. “Right. Lead the way, Walls.”
-
“Is Derek alright?” “He wouldn’t let us go down there, Y/n luckily convinced him to let her go.” Y/n’s mom added on to her older sister's initial question “He’s fine. Our boss is with him.” “He’s okay, momma.” Y/n reassured further after Emily.
“Did they he and Y/n tell you Gordinski’s been harassing him since he was a kid?” “Whys that?” Spencer asked, innocently, not realising he was asking Sarah, “You’d have to ask the bastard.” Y/n was sat in the chair in front of him, reaching her hand back and patted Spencer’s arm in sympathy, as their mom shared her disappointment with Sarah’s harsh words.
Wally had some things to say that only made Sarah more riled up, “What are you even doing in my mother’s house?!” “They asked me.” “Not really.” Spencer mumbled, eating the piece of cake.
“I don’t understand how they could think he did this.” “Someone may be trying to make it look like he hurt those kids.” “And the police believe it?” “But he’s an FBI agent.” Desi cut, Y/n was about to gently tell her sister that in an investigation that doesn’t really matter, but of course Spencer cut in with his ever present knowledge.
“Actually, law enforcement officials are just as probable statistically to commit a crime as anyone else.” Y/n placed her head in her hands, she loved hearing Spencer talk about what he knows but sometimes- he just can’t read a room “Look at the cross-section of a society, there’s a general population and a small fraction of this percentage is-” “Momma, he’s not saying they believe D is involved in this.” “Oh, no, no! Yeah, not at all! I’m merely speaking theoretically.”
Sarah almost looks at him like he’s crazy, and Desi speaks up from where she’s standing behind their mom, seemingly only talking to embarrass her little sister. “You're Dr. Reid?” “Mhmm.” “Derek and Y/n have talked about you.” And her head falls back onto her hands. “Really?” Spencer says, smugly from his spot above his best friend.
“Derek loves kids. Every time he’s here he goes to the youth centre.” “Youth Centre?” “The Upward Youth Centre.” “Does that have some sort of significance for him?” Spencer cut into Emily and Mrs.Morgan’s conversation to ask, “What are you saying? There’s something in it for him, other than giving back to poor kids of your neighbourhood?” “Sarah, these are me and D’s friends. They’re only here to help. When they ask a question, it isn’t to denigrate or demean anything Derek’s done.” “We just have to know everything so we can figure out where to look next. Does The Youth Centre hold any special significance to him?”
“The Youth Centre saved his life.”
Sarah and their mom explained to Emily and Spencer and maybe even Y/n, since she was too young at the time, the history between Derek and the law and Gordinski.
After hearing about Carl, Emily decided she was headed there next, leaving Y/n and Spencer with her family.
-
Spencer and Y/n were left at her mom’s house till the case eventually closed, and Derek got closure and justice for the boys. But until then,
Y/n knew what the team was doing with this, Y/n was too connected to the case and Spencer stayed with her because he could keep her at a level head.
They continued looking through old stuff of Detek’s and some of all the siblings, Spencer loved seeing the pictures of when Y/n was a child. At this point their job was more so to keep Sarah from freaking and keeping her mom from worrying too much about Derek.
“What’s this one?” “Aww, that was Y/n the week after Derek left for college.” The photo was of a young Y/n with a pout on her lips, it was Spencer’s favourite, she still made that same face from time to time. It was cute.
The women slowly left the dining table and made their way to the living room, watching how the two at the table didn’t even notice. Spencer was too busy looking for more adorable photos and Y/n trying to gather the incriminating ones.
“I thought Derek was just teasing her, but she really does like that freaky genius boy that much.”

the bump in the night ; rick flag x reader
Tumblr media
summary: someone made Mrs Flag cry, and her family is not having it.
warnings: tooth-rotting fluff, shadow-magic f!reader, reverse comfort & humour!
a/n: this AU is based on this piece I made a while back, 'cause you already know I can't do this special without hubby Rick and the kids! hope you enjoy it & don’t forget to leave some sugar! ᐠ( ᐛ )ᐟ
» wanna know what I have in store this fall? come & check out my m.list for 'reve's quirky reverie 🕷️'!
Tumblr media
'For now, they had a plan, hoping it could bring a smile to your face.' ;
Coming home to his daughter's hugs had become an everyday thing if Rick didn't have to work overtime, but if the flicker of sadness in her eyes was anything to go by, something had to have happened while he was away.
“Mrs Bedford was saying bad stuff to mama while we were at the park.”
It was the same thing she told her brothers when they got home from school, and just like them, it was enough for Rick to get the whole picture.
Ah, Mrs Bedford. Or as the neighbourhood youngsters, children and teenagers alike, like to call her 'the modern witch of the road', and not in the cool way. Her husband was no better, always bugging you at any given opportunity. The worst part was Mrs Bedford always antagonized you for it, even if she knew you didn’t entertain her husband’s behaviour. It was also extremely hypocritical of her, considering she herself has tried to make her move on Rick. A lot. Only to be met with disappointment each time.
Her children were just as bad, too, to put it lightly.
“What did she say?” It was the green light Irene needed before she explained what had happened to a T, courtesy of her father’s eagle eye. Unlike most days, it was just you and Irene visiting the park since your sons had football practice.
The two of you were feeding the ducks when Mrs Bedford came up to you.
“You on your own?” Was the first thing she asked you before you questionably said ‘yes’, despite Irene being there too, and the little girl realized Mrs Bedford wouldn’t have gone off on a tangent about you and your ‘possibly tainted history’ if her father or brothers were around in the first place.
“I don’t know what you did but I can see it in your eyes, Flag. You’re no saint. You can fool the others with your little flower shop and your so-called angelic kids, but not me.”
Though Mrs Bedford knew nothing about your powers or your time in Belle Reve, instead, spewing hate out of jealousy and hatred for you for being the favourable neighbour, she wasn’t completely wrong. You have hurt people, you’ve even killed some, but they were for the greater good. Since your freedom from hell on earth, you’ve barely used your umbrakineses. It wasn’t until the birth of your children, to which all three of them gained your abilities did you realized you couldn’t run from who you really were—it wasn’t right nor fair to them.
Then, telling them your story as a criminal and how their dad was once your enemy was another thing. You weren’t sure what reaction you were expecting, but it was certainly not amazement and sparkles in their eyes. As they grew older, they began to make sense of how their parents somehow knew people like Aunt Harley, Uncle Robert and hell, even Nanaue.
And at that point in time, Mrs Bedford reminded you of Waller, turning you into submission as you could do nothing but listen to her make a mockery out of you for turning over a new leaf. Irene had to watch your face drop as the woman insulted you, and she knew she had to tell her family about it.
Irene insisted that she was fine about heading home early, even if you tried to convince her otherwise. She wanted nothing more than to do something about that glazed look in your eyes.
As soon as you stepped foot into the living room, a tear rolled down your cheek. You couldn't help but apologize to her, to everyone if they were with you then. You weren’t entirely sure if it was because you seemed weak over a bunch of words or their fate of ending up with you as the wife and a mother of their family.
Irene shook her head, hugging you with her face in your tummy.
"You're not a mean person, mama. You're the nicest and coolest mama we could ever ask for, and we love you."
It was simple, something you've heard of thousands of times in your lifetime, but you very much needed it today.
Ever the sweet girl, she accompanied you as you lay in your bed, telling you random stories about what she painted during art class or what she ate at lunch, anything but the time Mrs Bedford’s son, Kyle pushed her off the swing while his older brother, Blake laughed and praised him for doing so. You didn’t need to know that.
Not yet.
You listened with a warm smile, embarrassed but nonetheless thankful for how observant she was of your feelings before eventually dozing off.
Irene was careful yet quick to jump off the bed, running downstairs to shush Richie and Ethan as they returned home.
The more she explained, the brighter their eyes unnaturally glowed. Richie was starting to look like their father as he crossed his arms, listening to her like a police officer, while Ethan seemed like he was already thinking of ways to counter the Bedford’s undignified acts.
Basically, the Bedfords were not the greatest people. Each and every one of them.
Though they had a myriad of ideas, they weren’t sure how much their father would appreciate it, even if it was for your sake. Still, they thanked Irene for being there for you, promising that something would be done, no matter what it would be.
For now, they had a plan, hoping it could bring a smile to your face.
After an unexpected nap, you came down to find your kids huddled on the couch, whispering and hushing each other. Curious, you approached them.
Ethan was the first to notice you, offering you a grin before showing you what was in their hands, “Look, ma, I think we got it.”
You leaned in to take a closer look, only for your breath to hitch at the sight of life on their palms. There, they showed you the differing mass of shadows they conjured, a tougher one you just taught them about a week ago. You have always loved this trick as a kid, and it only aided your sanity when you were by your lonesome in the penitentiary. In a way, you were replacing what life truly was by making your own, even if they were temporary because there was no telling when or if you’d ever be free.
Yet, here they were, prompting joy and pride as they held the wispy animals of their choice; Richie with what seemed to be an adorable little puppy, Ethan creatively emulated a bioluminescent jellyfish and Irene…
Oh, Irene.
She scarcely remembered how much you loved making her laugh by conjuring butterflies when she was still very little if not for the twins confirming it.
The butterfly was as small as her hand, but the wings were majestic, idly flapping before flying over to you, leaving cloudy black trails and landing on your outstretched finger.
You stared at their creations ever so lovingly, already on the brink of tears. You were just as mad at yourself for doubting your worth, and your potential, just because of the things you had to do in the past, for the sake of the person you were now.
You embraced Irene in a tight hug before pulling your boys in as well. You sniffled, absolutely joyous and blessed to be surrounded by the most loving people. Nothing could deter you from this, not even as the shadow puppy yipped and chased the jellyfish and butterfly in excitement. Your cat, Tofu, must’ve heard the commotion, too, as she came from the kitchen to check, only to be frightened and jump on the couch with you as the puppy came running to her.
Rick finally arrived about two hours later, coming home to hear laughter before he saw Irene running across the room, followed by Tofu and the shadow puppy in tow. The jellyfish laid on Richie’s head like a nest whereas the butterfly decided to make Ethan’s shoulder its home as they hung out with you on the couch.
“Daddy!” Irene greeted him before running over to him. He didn’t question the questioning look she gave him just yet and instead, hoisted her up, laughing as Tofu and the puppy pawed at his bootlaces.
“What’s going on here?” He raised his brows, amused by what could be described as a fever dream of a sight.
“The kids learnt how to make little lives.” You giggled, allowing Rick to sit next to you as you scooted over.
“And I got a new hat,” Richie gestured to the jellyfish, who he has now dubbed as Jelly. As if it understood, Jelly immediately floated away, leaving Richie’s hair flattened, “Never mind.”
You shared a laugh as he deadpanned before you turned to Rick, “Was work okay?”
“Yeah, the usual. Decorated the place today, actually.” He took his phone out of his pocket, opening his gallery and showing you and the kids the spookily tacky decor that furnished his workplace.
“Did you really paint ‘dead inside, don’t open’ on the entrance door?” The twins gawked.
“Fitting, ain't it?” Rick joked, prompting smiles and chuckles from you once more before falling back on the couch, “But at least I’m off tomorrow, so I was thinking we could eat out for dinner.”
“Oh! We should head to Pop’s since they’re also offering their apple betty.” Ethan suggested.
“Well, I think that’s a good idea, so,” Richie trailed off, raising anticipation from the rest of you before jumping off the couch and running up the stairs. Ethan and Irene simultaneously gasped before the former took his sister out of Rick’s arms to chase their brother together. You and Rick could only watch with delight as Tofu and the shadow creatures followed them too.
“Everything okay?” He wanted to know, but he wouldn’t pry if you weren’t ready to tell him.
“Yeah,” You nodded, gazing down for a moment before continuing, “Something happened earlier but…”
“Richie! You better not lock the door or I swear to God!” Ethan’s voice rang out from upstairs, followed by Irene’s ‘language!’, and you couldn’t help but shake your head in amusement.
“It’s all good now.” You reassured him. You knew you could’ve told him, but it wasn’t worth dwelling on. You had children to nurture and a husband to take on the world with.
“The Bedfords?” He guessed. If it wasn’t them, then it had to be Mr Walker.
“The Bedfords,” You confirmed with a tight smile, “I’m just more upset that Irene was there to hear it.”
You didn’t explain any further and Rick took it as a sign to drop it. If they were able to make you this upset, then it was best to ask the kids instead.
“I’m sorry,” He pulled you to his chest, planting a slow and gentle kiss on your forehead. He rubbed your back, sighing at the very mention of that family. Rick loathed that they were influential enough to be one of the higher-ups of the school’s PTA, though he was confident that money was involved in it too. He hated that they were reasons why you’d come home ranting about how Mrs Bedford bugged you again, or when he had to make sure Mr Bedford knew he was making a promise and not an empty threat whenever it involved their kids and his, "You know I can talk to them."
It would do no good, but it was worth trying.
"No, you know how the Bedfords are. Don’t worry, okay? Not now,” You kissed the inside of his palm before pressing your lips against his, soft, sensual and safe. Rick moved forward, deepening the kiss as held the nape of your neck. You pulled away but not before nuzzling his nose, “We should be celebrating.”
He nodded, though he knew it would only linger in his mind for a while. Still, he adhered to your wishes, standing up before offering you his hand to get ready, “Right, right. Shall we?”
You snorted, placing your hand in his the way a princess would when a prince asks for a dance. Unexpectedly, he twirled you around, wrapping his arms around you he pulled you in, chest to chest. You playfully smacked him, though it did very little to wipe off the pleased look on his face as the two of you headed to your room.
Tumblr media
You and the boys were the first to head out to the front yard, chatting and evaluating the decors of the houses while waiting for Rick and Irene.
“What happened today?” He asked his daughter quietly as they stood at the front door, helping with her shoes while she slid on a jacket.
“Mrs Bedford was saying bad stuff to mama while we were at the park.” She whispered back, swinging her arms as she watched her father tie her shoelace, “Like, really mean stuff. No one was around except us so she was kinda loud, too.”
Rick fumed, clenching his jaw as he could already hear and picture whatever nonsense she loved to spit out.
“Mama got kinda quiet when we came home, and then she started crying. About how she’s sorry she was a criminal and how we’re ‘stuck’ with her powers.” She added. If anything, she and the boys thought your abilities were the coolest thing to have ever happened to them.
He shook his head—who wouldn't crack after being subjected to their ways for so long? He hummed, hiding the seething resentment by ruffling Irene's hair.
"Can you help me distract your mother while I talk to the boys for a bit?" She nodded diligently, skipping over to you before Rick called out to his sons, "Need some help, boys."
They rushed over, glancing at you before Ethan spoke up first, "She told you?"
"Yeah." Rick replied as he locked the door.
"Can't we do something about it?" Richie asked with a frown.
"You boys are not punching Blake again." Rick reminded them with a small smile.
"You didn't seem to mind it," Ethan mirrored his father's amusement, "He was yelling at our teammate and encouraged his troll brother to push Irene off a swing."
"I'm mad, too," Rick was more than mad, but he couldn't let his emotions run wild, "Look, we'll think of something, alright? For now, just make sure she's happy."
That's all they ever wanted.
The drive to Pop's was a lively one, and so was the dinner itself. Though you knew you'd be thinking about Mrs Bedford's words every once in a while, the smiles and laughter of your family were already a welcoming distraction as it is.
Tumblr media
Midnight rolled around, and everyone had returned to their rooms with sore cheeks and a full stomach. You were the first to slip under the covers after a shower, hoping you wouldn't be too tired as you waited for Rick, though it didn't work.
By the time Rick got out of the bathroom, you were peacefully asleep, your face just a breath away from your husband's pillow as his scent soothed you like no other.
Rick smiled to himself, changing into his PJs before sitting on your side of the bed. The dip roused you from your slumber just a little.
"Rick?" You murmured, fluttering your lashes tiredly.
"Forgot to get some water," He caressed your cheek before bending down to kiss it, "I'll be back."
You mustered a closed-eye smile and before you knew it, you drifted off once again, lulled by the way he patted your back.
Once the coast was clear, he moved off the bed, silently slipping out and closing the door before heading over to the twins' room. He knocked on the door, just enough for them to hear before doing the same with Irene's door and headed downstairs.
Rick sat down at the dining table with a glass of cold water, arms crossed and lost in his own thoughts before hearing light footsteps approaching.
Richie, Ethan and Irene carefully pulled their chairs back before taking a seat, and just like that, the discussion began.
But it didn't seem like they were getting anywhere and at some point, they just started shit-talking.
"Man, I wish coach would just kick Blake out." Ethan groaned, his head falling back.
"Tell me about it. He's shit at quarterback." Richie clicked his tongue.
"Boys." Rick warned them, partially because his youngest was listening.
"Sorry." They apologized but Irene didn't seem to mind.
"How about…" She chimed in, tapping her finger on her chin, "We scare them?"
"Like…?" Richie cocked his head, hoping she'd say more than just that.
"I don't know, I just thought it'd be cool since it's Halloween and stuff. And, well, maybe we could use our powers, but I know mama and daddy wouldn't want that." She shrugged, pouting because she hadn't thought it far enough.
"It would be a miracle to scare them without using our powers in the first place," Richie sighed, looking over to his father, "What do you think, dad?"
No reply.
"Dad?" Ethan followed suit as the three of them raised their brows.
“How far are you in your shadow puppet practice?” Rick asked out of the blue, staring ahead as though imagining whatever idea he had played out.
“Uh, pretty far, I think? Ma taught us how to merge our shadows into one if we wanted to make a bigger animal.” Richie answered, earning affirmative nods from his siblings.
“How big?”
“Like, this big!” Irene opened her arms wide to let him know just how big of a monster they would be able to make if they wanted to. They haven’t, there was no reason to, but the more their father asked, the more it piqued their interest.
Rick thought it through for a moment. It has been a while since he has seen you make that one particular lifeform, but it was worth a shot. If it were able to render Waller speechless, then it’ll definitely make the Bedfords piss their pants.
No actual attacks, and definitely no killings. But he’ll make sure they shudder at the mere thought of Halloween. Put the fear of God in them. They had it coming, too, stomping on other neighbours’ happiness for years just for the fun of it.
He just had to play it safe.
He slowly broke into a sinister smile.
“You three ever heard of a hellhound?”

Sims In Bloom: Generation 2 Pt. 58 (Adopted by Another Stray!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On a rainy autumn night, Mayor Whiskers started scratching feverishly at the front door. Heather got up to let him out, but a small, soaked black cat raced through the opening and into the bedroom at the end of the hall.
This black cat was nervous and aloof, and it took several attempts to lure her from under the bed with treats. But she liked Buttercups as much as any pet, and Heather slowly earned her trust.
Tumblr media
"She's cute," acknowledged Conrad. "But we've already got two cats and Gord!"
Heather smiled at the untrained stray. "She needs a good home, and she seems comfortable here," she said. "I know our life is always busy and our upstairs hallway looks like a cheap greenhouse right now, but one more cat won't hurt!"
Conrad wasn't going to seriously argue against adding another pet to their household, and Heather took their new black cat to her clinic next door for a check up. One x-ray made clear why she suddenly wanted a warm roof - she was expecting kittens. There was no way Heather would turn her out again in her condition.
Tumblr media
"What we name her?" Ash wondered as he watched the cats play together outside.
"What do you think we should name her?"
"Cupcake!" he shouted. "I love cupcakes!"
Heather smiled. "Just Cupcake?"
Ash shook his head, grinning. "No, mommy. Queen Cupcake! Like King Tut!"
Tumblr media
With that, Queen Cupcake had her name, and their new pet started to make herself at home. To celebrate, she picked a fight with Mayor Whiskers(!), but it wasn't long before Whiskers and Cupcake were nuzzling, as enamored with each other as Heather and Conrad! Heather was relieved the cat was already pregnant, but she made a note to have her spayed as soon as the kittens were born.
She was far more aggressive than any of her other pets, but Heather hoped this was a side-effect of her maternal instinct, hoping it might fade once she'd safely delivered.
"Training bad habits out of you might not be easy, huh?"
Queen Cupcake's responsive meow sounded distinctively like a 'yeah,' but cat-loving Heather was ready for the challenge.
Before long, Queen Cupcake delivered two small black kittens, the spitting image of their mother, named Duchess and Lady. Their house was overflowing with pets!
Tumblr media
Heather's son was almost as friendly with cats as his mother, and loved spending time with Queen Cupcake's tiny new kittens.
"These kitties small like me, mommy." Ash could pick up Duchess and Lady, who fit in the crook of his small arm, to pet their fuzzy black fur. "They soft."
They bought a self-cleaning litter box to try to handle the influx of felines, but all five cats still preferred to use the old one that needed manual cleaning, much to their dismay.
"What if we just got rid of it?" suggested Conrad. "Then they'd have to use the new one, right?"
"I know we should," said Heather. "I have a feeling the Watcher keeps meaning to do that, but you and I are both neat so we just keep cleaning it and she forgets."
"Are we talking about the Watcher Watcher making changes while we sleep, or are you saying the Watcher made you forget to throw out the old one?"
Tumblr media
"Maybe both?" She laughed as their conversation bordered on ridiculous. No one got her sense of humour as much as he did. "What if the cats are just attached to the old one?"
Conrad considered this. "The old one does have a certain smell... Should we be worried about a Watcher who's so disorganized?"
Heather shrugged. "She helped the doctors save my son, so I won't begrudge her one smelly litter box."
"Fair point," agreed Conrad with a smile. "I'll go get the scoop."
Active full-time jobs, five cats, a dog, and a toddler kept Heather and Conrad busy, but they still carved out every moment they could together - which usually meant crashing on the couch to watch their favourite shows until they fell asleep.
Tumblr media
They worked hard, but their life together was a perfect fit. ->
<- Previous Chapter | Gen 2 Start | Gen 1 Summary | Gen 1 Start
NOTE: Me, writing about how stressed and busy they are as a slightly meta dig at my own gameplay this gen, proceeding to add 3 cats. Honestly it's for Heather because more cats don't stress her out at all. She also always needs to have 2 cats per the challenge rules and Boomer is getting up there, so I'm game. I might not keep all five forever but Queen Cupcake is here to stay.

Bad Dog? Ft. Hybrid!Nicholas
A/n: I have an obsession with andteam these days. I mean, I always have, but we'll. It's super evident recently. Idk Nicholas just screams doberman or were werecat 🥹✨️
Here it iss
Genre: Fluff, angst, hybrid au, humour
Pairings: Nicholas x fem reader (oc but name not mentioned)
Warnings: None really
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hybrid centre smelled like cheap air freshener and broken promises. You stood at the front desk, arms crossed, listening to the owner—a middle-aged man with a receding hairline and an even more receding sense of honesty—explain why the hybrid you had already booked and paid for was… gone.
"I know this is inconvenient," he said with a practised, customer-service smile that screamed, 'Trust me, I’m lying', "but the tiger hybrid, uh, ran away last night. Must've slipped right past security. Real shame."
You squinted. "A tiger hybrid? Just vanished?
The owner nodded too quickly. "Yup. It happens all the time."
"Psst."
You blinked. "What?"
The owner stiffened. "What?"
"Psst. Down here," the voice whispered again.
You glanced toward the holding cells, and that’s when you saw him—Nicholas. His nameplate was bolted onto the thick metal bars, which immediately made you suspicious. The hybrid centre’s website had promised bright, open living spaces for their hybrids. Not… this.
Nicholas lounged lazily against the bars, amber eyes gleaming with amusement. His cropped Doberman ears flicked, and his tail gave a single lazy wag.
"Why is he in a cell?" you asked, side-eyeing the owner.
The man chuckled nervously. "Ah, well, he's a bit of a troublemaker. Doesn't get along well with others."
Nicholas sat up. "Heyyy—" He paused. Thought about it. Then shrugged. "Actually, that is true. I bite them."
The owner pointed at him, exasperated. "See?! This is why he’s in a cell!"
Nicholas rolled his eyes. "Oh, please. They deserved it." Then he turned back to you, voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "By the way, that tiger hybrid? He didn’t run away. This guy sold him to someone else ‘cause they offered more money."
Your gaze snapped to the owner. He went stiff as a board.
"T-That’s ridiculous!" he stammered, tugging at his collar like it was choking him. "He’s just saying things—he bites people! You can’t trust him!"
You crossed your arms. "You promised a comfortable life for hybrids. But he's literally behind bars."
The owner let out a weak laugh. "W-Well, it's for his own safety! And others'!"
Nicholas smirked. "He's not wrong, sweetheart. I do bite." He leaned against the bars, chin resting on his folded arms. "But only when they deserve it."
The owner looked like he was seconds away from a nervous breakdown.
You sighed, rubbing your temples. "Okay. We need to talk."
Nicholas let out a low whistle. "Ooooh, someone’s in trouble."
The owner was sweating bullets, probably trying to figure out how to lie his way out of this mess. Meanwhile, Nicholas was watching the drama unfold like it was his personal entertainment.
Then, as if remembering something urgent, he perked up.
"Hey. Hey." He rattled the bars to get your attention. "Look at the board."
You followed his gaze to a large pricing sheet on the wall. A handful of hybrids had price tags next to their names. Nicholas' name stood out—because right next to it was a big, bright, 50% OFF sticker.
You turned back to him, unimpressed. "Wow. What a deal."
Nicholas grinned, ignoring your sarcasm. "Right?! Half-off ‘cause they hate me." He shot the owner a knowing look. "Tell her, boss. You despise me, don’t you?"
The owner made a choked noise. "I—I wouldn’t say despise—"
Nicholas leaned forward, voice deadpan. "You locked me up like a criminal."
The owner threw his hands up. "You bite people!"
"Heyyy—" Nicholas paused, then sighed. "Okay, yeah. But only when necessary. It’s called self-defense."
You pinched the bridge of your nose. "I came here for a tiger."
"Pfft. Cats are overrated. Get a dog instead!" Nicholas gestured to himself proudly. "We're stronger. More loyal. Funnier. And we don’t sleep 16 hours a day."
"That last part is debatable," the owner muttered.
Nicholas ignored him. "Did you know that Dobermans are one of the smartest breeds? I can learn commands faster than a cat could decide whether or not it likes you." He held up a finger. "Also, fun fact: I can run up to 32 miles per hour. That’s, like, twice as fast as a tiger."
You frowned. "That’s… not true."
He waved a hand. "Okay, fine, technically not true, but close enough! And let’s be real—are you gonna be riding a tiger into battle? No? Exactly. So my speed is more useful."
You stared at him. "Who said anything about battle?"
Nicholas smirked. "I dunno. You look like the type."
The owner groaned. "For the love of—please stop talking."
Nicholas gasped, mock-offended. "Wow. Silencing me? Unbelievable." He turned back to you. "Okay, okay, I get it. You want a deal, right? What if I told you… you could get me for free?"
You raised an eyebrow. "Free?"
He grinned. "Yup. You were scammed, remember? Kinda messed up that this guy took your money and then sold your hybrid to someone else, right?" He gave the owner a slow, smug glance. "So, as a totally reasonable solution, I propose he lets you take me instead. Y'know, as compensation."
The owner turned red. "ABSOLUTELY NOT—"
Nicholas clicked his tongue. "Wow. No integrity. Scamming and refusing to make it right? Unbelievable."
You exhaled. "This is ridiculous."
Nicholas grinned wider. "And yet… you're thinking about it."
You hated that he was right.
Nicholas was a genius.
A mastermind.
A visionary.
Because if he played his cards right, he was getting out of this cage today.
And hopefully with her.
See, it wasn’t just that he wanted to escape (though, obviously, yes). It was also because this girl? This girl was pretty. And sure, he’d been around plenty of humans before, but none of them had this… this vibe. She looked cool. A little intimidating. And definitely like she liked dogs.
Nicholas squinted at her. Yeah. No doubt about it. This was a dog person.
Her arms were crossed, her expression skeptical, but he could see it—the little crack in her resolve. Oh yeah. She was thinking about it.
He needed to seal the deal.
Time for maximum charm.
He widened his eyes just a little. Not too much—he wasn’t a chihuahua. Just enough for effect. Then he let his ears droop ever so slightly and leaned against the bars with a tiny, forlorn sigh.
"Pwease," he said, voice soft and dramatic. "I'm just a wittle guy. A wittle guy who got wrongfuwwy impwisoned—"
"Oh, shut up!" the owner snapped.
Nicholas immediately dropped the act. "Jeez, man, ever heard of theatrics? No wonder your business is flopping."
"It is not flopping—"
"Yeah? Then why am I half off?"
The owner turned red, looking like he wanted to strangle him, but Nicholas ignored him. Focus. Mission: Get Adopted.
Nicholas turned back to the girl and gave her his best puppy-dog eyes. "Listen. You and me? I think we'd make a great team."
She sighed. "I literally came here for a tiger."
"And yet... you're still here." He smirked. "Because deep down, you know I'm the better option." He flexed dramatically. "Look at these arms. Look at this jawline. I am built for protection. You want a tiger? Cool. But what happens when you need loyalty? What happens when you need someone to glare at people menacingly in public so no one even thinks about robbing you?"
"You do look like you'd be good at glaring," she admitted, eyeing his sharp features.
He perked up. Progress. She was considering it.
Time to go in for the kill.
"AND!" He suddenly wagged his tail a little—just enough to be endearing.
She blinked. "What?"
"I have so many more fun facts!" He grinned. "Did you know that Dobermans were originally bred to protect tax collectors? That means I have a rich history of intimidation. Also, my fur is low maintenance! You won’t have to deal with all that pesky shedding like you would with a tiger." He gasped dramatically. "OH! And I can sense when you're upset and will offer emotional support immediately. Do you think a tiger's gonna do that?"
She looked mildly amused now. "So you’re saying I should pick you because you’ll stare at people, not shed, and be a therapist?"
"EXACTLY." He nodded sagely. "I am the full package."
The owner groaned into his hands. "I can’t do this anymore."
Nicholas smirked, knowing he was winning.
"You remember? You could just take me for free."
The girl actually considered it for a second.
The owner, looking one step away from a mental breakdown, exhaled sharply. "Fine. Fine. Take him. Just—get him out of here. No refunds, no take-backs. Deal?"
Nicholas' ears shot up. His heart nearly leapt out of his chest.
OH MY GOD, IS THIS HAPPENING?
The girl raised an eyebrow. "You're really that desperate to get rid of him?"
"YES."
Nicholas had never seen a man so emotionally exhausted in his life.
The girl looked back at Nicholas, arms crossed again. "You bite people, though."
Nicholas beamed. "Only the ones who deserve it."
"...Fine. I’ll take him."
Nicholas froze.
Did she just—
OH MY GOD, SHE PICKED ME.
His tail thumped against the bars before he could stop it. "You won't regret this!"
She sighed. "I already do."
Nicholas just grinned. This was the best day of his life.
You stared at the hybrid centre doors—triple-locked, bolted, and possibly blessed by a priest—then turned to Nicholas.
"Okay, explain." You gestured to the absurd celebration that just took place. "Why were they acting like that?"
Nicholas grinned, tail wagging. "Oh, y’know, the usual. I was their favorite."
You gave him a flat look. "That was not the reaction of people losing a favourite. That was the reaction of people winning the lottery."
Nicholas let out a dramatic sigh, adjusting his mysteriously acquired suitcases. "Alright, alright. Tragic backstory time."
You raised an eyebrow but said nothing.
"Picture this," he started, voice lower like he was about to deliver the saddest tale in history. "A young, handsome, charming hybrid, full of life and excitement, enters the world. He is placed in a prestigious hybrid center. Hopeful. Naïve. Ready for his forever home."
"You’re talking about yourself in third person."
"Shh, don’t interrupt the art."
You sighed, crossing your arms.
Nicholas cleared his throat. "And then—the tragedy."
You waited.
"I was adopted," he said, placing a hand over his chest dramatically. "Again. And again. And again. But every single time—they brought me back."
Your expression softened slightly. "...That’s actually really sad."
"Yeah, yeah, I guess," he said, waving a hand. But his tail stopped wagging for a second.
Something about that made your stomach feel… off.
"Why did they return you?" you asked.
Nicholas rolled his eyes. "Because I might have been a little too much for them. Apparently, I was ‘destructive.’ ‘Too energetic.’ ‘Didn’t listen to commands.’ Blah blah blah." He waved a hand. "One guy even called me ‘the embodiment of chaos.’ Like, dude, that’s kind of cool—"
You gave him a look.
He coughed. "Okay, yeah, I did chew his couch into confetti, but in my defense, he had horrible taste in furniture."
You pinched the bridge of your nose. "Nicholas…"
"Hey, relax! It's fine." He grinned, too wide, too quick. "I don’t really think about it anymore."
But then, before you could respond—
His ears twitched. His tail stayed still.
And in a voice so casual it almost sounded like a joke, he said, "Eventually, you might get sick of me too and return me."
Your stomach twisted.
Nicholas, of course, didn’t let it linger.
"ANYWAY," he said, snapping back into his usual self, "you won’t return me, right? Right? You don’t look like a quitter."
You hesitated for a second too long.
He noticed.
For half a second, his expression flickered—something unreadable - something too quick to catch.
But then, like always, he covered it up.
"Pfft, kidding! Kidding. Obviously, you and me? Great team. You won’t get tired of me." He grinned, but this time it didn’t quite reach his eyes. "Buuut if you do, at least let me keep the suitcases. They make me feel fancy."
You frowned.
You weren’t sure what annoyed you more—the fact that he was obviously deflecting or the fact that now you actually felt bad.
This dog was a menace.
A menace with a weirdly sad past.
"...Come on," you sighed, finally turning away. "Let's go home."
Nicholas perked up immediately, tail wagging again as he followed you. "YES. HOME. I can't wait to see my room!—Wait, I get a room, right? If not, I call dibs on the biggest bed."
You sighed and smiled.
You were in so much trouble.
You felt like you were gonna regret this.
But also… you didn’t.
Definitely making a part 2 for this!
I hope y'all enjoyed it 🥹

Hello!!! =D
This follows from Part 1
Warning: long post 😊😅
Tumblr media
Oh you're still here 😶
Honestly, I was really liking his character right up till he said this. He was nice, friendly, and yes, a little invasive, but as long as Peem didn't mind, I was okay. But we all know how a love rival saying these words go in BLs, so when he said this, alarms went off in my head. And he continued flirting. Which is not okay. I know Peem doesn't really mind, but still. Kluen, you are a mostly decent human, but please take a rejection as it's supposed to be taken.
Also, when he says he's handsome and rich, and Peem jokes about how much he's willing to "invest", Peem says "Phum is handsome, too." No mention of his money. If Phum heard this, he'd be jumping and squealing, but it also tells us that Peem cares fuck all about how rich Phum is. Which will probably help Phum gain more confidence in this love.
Tumblr media
Who the fuck cares. 🙂
Listen, as I said in my previous post, I'd decided to ignore the parents because they didn't deserve any attention, but when he stopped Fang from going after Phum, I was furious. That is nothing compared to what I felt in this scene. You ruined his childhood, gave him trauma that he'll never be able to fully leave behind, gave Fang trauma too, and then you dare to ask him why he doesn't talk to you? You have the audacity to keep pestering him even after he says he has something to do? And now you're ruining his adult life too. With all due respect, which is absolutely none: fuck. off.
@almayver I'm really thinking of writing that fic. 🙂
Tumblr media
I love this friend group so much.
The moment Q says Peem is sad they all barge into his house to cheer him up, no hesitation. They don't demand to know the whys and hows (Q does, but he already knows), just settle in comfortable and loudly, and be their chaotic selves. This reminds us that despite all the flirting and cheesy lines and hugging and kissies, friendship will always be a priority for these group of friends.
And let's be honest, Peem expected Aunt Pui, and we all expected Phum. This was a very nice surprise.
Tumblr media
All this time, Peem wasn't upset Phum was late. He was worried about Phum.
This was the scene that made me cry. We Are was supposed to be a simple romcom. WHAT IS THIS THEN.
I just- I really have nothing to say here, they said it all.
Tumblr media
They both did what they did and are feeling what they are because they're important to each other.
Phum did it because he didn't want to ruin Peem's big day again. And Peem is upset and worried because he thinks he might not be Phum's safe space anymore.
Peem's reaction tells me that maybe he was over the moon last episode when he could provide comfort to Phum. And he's very very glad that at least with him, Phum can be himself. This incident makes him question that, which leads him to questioning their entire relationship. Phum himself said (many times in various ways) that Peem makes him feel good and warm and comfortable, and he's not lonely anymore. But... if Peem isn't that to Phum anymore, then what is he?
Tumblr media
This is one of the best love confessions Thai BL has ever given me.
I have nothing else to say. This has already given us all enough emotional damage.
Tumblr media
This reminds me of that textpost: "Caught giving a fuck. Embarrassing."
Love that Q has already accepted Phum hehe. You know your man is good when he's bestie-approved.
Love even more how he's giving the cold shoulder to Phum and then defending him to Peem 😭
Tumblr media
Well he did, but apparently your ears were "muffled".
Also- love this scene.
Tumblr media
HE SAYS IT.
I mean, I get him though, who the hell would be able to say no to Phum's "please? 🥺"
Tumblr media
Just putting this here 'cause I happened to pause at the right moment and this scene is beautiful and very pretty. <3
Tumblr media
I missed Matt (JJ) and his impeccable sense of humour so bad
Every group is incomplete without a Matt hehe
Tumblr media
If I had a rupee for every time a couple kissed at this booth, I'd have two rupees, which is nothing, but it's strange it happened twice.
Another very beautiful scene. <33
Tumblr media
He says that as if he isn't squealing and giggling inside. But. FINALLY. OUR PATIENCE HAS BEEN REWARDED, THEY'RE FINALLY DATING!!!!
Tumblr media
OOH flower bouquet kiss hehe
Reminds me of QToey tote bag kiss
Next ep:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Portrait drawing?!!
"KHUN FAEN"??
SOFT TANFANG KISS???
HOW DO THEY EXPECT ME TO SURVIVE THIS?!!
*sigh*
Anyways, that's all for this week, see you next ep!
If you got this far, thank you so much for reading! 😊
Here, have some ice cream 🍨

in sickness
who?: seungkwan x (f)reader
word count: 1562
genre/s: fluff, humour, idol!au, established relationship
warnings: references to flu/illness and food
synopsis: while you might not want to bother your boyfriend amidst his busy schedule, a surprise visit forces otherwise
a/n: yay first seungkwan fic! and I fixed my laptop battery today! all by myself!!!
Tumblr media
You feel like death warmed up. Everything hurts and even though you swear you can smell how bad you are despite your blocked sinuses, you don’t have an iota of energy to move. Obviously you’ve caught the flu that was going around town - some idiot must’ve had it on the train. You’ve already rainchecked your movie day with a couple of girlfriends and you really wish your boyfriend was here to sass and coddle you. But, alas the life of an idol meant he was booked back to back with variety schedules from the come down of BSS’s most recent comeback last month. Sure he would be a little less public soon, but that meant it was the cycle building up to a Seventeen comeback - recording, dance practice, fittings. You needed to stop thinking, it was hurting your head.
You roll over on the sofa to change the channel to a nice mindless cooking show, something you didn’t have to listen to, only hear. Hmm, sure that made sense. You groan loudly for yourself. You hate being sick.
It’s sundown and you’ve made some ramen you didn’t want and a bottle of water on the coffee table next to the myriad of syrups and pills to combat illness. You are in a blanket-burrito position, comfortable but not happy. You tip your head up but nothing else when the keypad beeps and the door opens unexpectedly.
“Baby, I’m home! Surprise, the schedule finished up earlier than I thought and - oh my! What happened?” He gapes, backpack in one hand, takeout bags in the other.
Seungkwan slings them up on your kitchen bench and wades over to you. The back of his hand presses to your forehead before raking your hair from your face. Instantly you’re in pout-mode. You knew how much of a baby you were when you were sick. If anyone else acted the way you did, you’d have told them to rub some dirt in it and get it together. So you kept quiet over text - it helped his days were so packed to say much.
“Flu. I’ve been sick for like the last 2 or 3 days and I hate it.” You whine, raspy and clogged. “I didn't think you would be coming by. No trouble.”
“Why didn’t you say anything? You know I would have dropped it all to come by to take care of you.” He frowns, cradling your cheek with a smooth palm.
You burrow deeper and shake your head. “You’re busy. I’m being a baby about this.”
His bottom lip juts out and he reaches for you to wrestle you out of your blanket and hold you up by your armpits like a stubborn kitten. “Don’t be silly. I’m never too busy for you, my baby. Don’t try to be some hero and keep quiet about it - don’t hide it.” His scolding, nagging tone softens as your head droops and your eyes turn glassy. “C’mon now, up you get. I’m here now. Let’s take care of you, hmm? Get you in the shower - the steam will help your sinuses.”
He guides you down your own hallway and plops you on the toilet seat with the lid down while he starts up the shower, darting his hand under the spray to test the temperature. You slouch, leaning your head on the bathroom bench unable to combat the weight it adds. You’re just too tired. When he’s satisfied, shaking his fringe from his face he helps you undress and briefly brushes your hair, knowing you prefer to do so to prevent any extra knots when you come out. You whine wordlessly aloud for no reason but discontent and step in. Seungkwan nods resolute, ducking to press a quick kiss to your bare shoulder.
“Okay I’ll come back in with a fresh set of pajamas and we’ll dry your hair too. I’m gonna clean up out here.” He says softly. You turn to protest but he shuts his eyes and tips his chin away from you. “Ah! None of that. Keep the door open in case you feel faint. Let me take care of you, remember?”
He’s right - the steam eases the weight and ache in your face and you even turn the heat up some more to scalding, putting your face directly under to warm and dislodge it further. At one point, he slips back in, laying out a fresh set of towels and your matching Sanrio sweatpants and sweatshirt. Finally you turn the water off and dry off, violently blowing your nose with a frustrated groan. Everything about this sucked. Well, almost everything.
Now he’s back in, with one of your kitchen stools and your hairdryer. He smiles, molten and honeyed.
“Hey baby, feel better?”
Seungkwan’s nagging is over - he seems to have called it off on you in pity.
“Yeah, a bit.”
“Oh good. Sit and we’ll dry your hair. Then it’s soup, medicine and rest.” He’s very no nonsense about it all and you can’t help but roll your eyes and smile.
The warm air is amazing but you’re still pretty much limbless, standing for so long under the shower spray wearing you out. He catches your eye in the mirror and nudges your shoulder to lean back on his hip.
“Rest, lean on me. I’ll work around you.”
So you shut your eyes and droop your cheek to his waiting palm. You wished the hairdryer wasn’t so loud - you really wanted to hear about his day. Really, you just wanted to hear his voice warm, melodic and animated. He could talk about fishing or astrophysics and you’d listen.
When the air is too scalding against your neck and your hair lighter, Seungkwan switches it off. Your cheek is still in his hand and he laughs fondly.
“Hey, do you have the effort to do a little skincare? You’ll break out otherwise.” He says, light as a feather.
You hum and nod again, an effort to sit up properly. “Together?” You pout.
Seungkwan dramatically rolls his eyes. “Oh the effort - of course, honey.”
He leans down over the sink next to you to quickly wash and cleanse his face, getting the concoction and water on his dark shirt in droplets. Then it’s a gentle drip and dab of serum. Night cream, the pads of his fingers sweeping lightly and finally your eye cream, the cool metal roller a soothing massage on your nose bridge and under eye. He’s quick with his, but not haphazard. Every step done with care and precision even as he lets each serum and tonic soak and set. You can’t help but sigh and stare for a little too long, lovingly. You reach to rest your arm across the small of his back over his navy tee, fingers swirling absent patterns over the soft cotton. He perks up at that, twisting to eye you.
“Hmm?”
You shake your head and smile. “Just you.”
Skincare complete, he slides you off the stool to pick it up, following after you back to the sofa.
Most nights, except Thursday, Friday and Saturday, both you and Seungkwan agreed to always eat meals at the dining table. Yours was pissy and small, lacquer dented and scratched - his large and sleek, something befitting the clean, spacious place he and Jeonghan lived in. It was a way to make a little routine and be a bit more put together. But tonight it was sofa-dinner. There was another blanket from your linen cupboard draped over the arm of the sofa. A trash bin, new bottle of water and a myriad of vitamins and medicine on the coffee table. He settles you down and bundles you up in one of your faux-furry throw blankets.
He frowns and holds up your half a roll of toilet paper. “Why was this on the coffee table?”
You cringe. “I - well I sort of ran out of tissues first day in and couldn’t be bothered going or ordering any more.”
“No wonder your nose is all red! You’re rubbing it raw!” He scolds you. “I’ll get you settled then go to the convenience store.”
You cry out and whine, reaching for him. “I’ll be okay. Just, please stay for a little bit.”
Seungkwan concedes, fussing and wrapping you a little tighter in your throw blanket.
“Fine, but I will be going out soon to get you some fruits and tissues. I pulled that soup out of your freezer since I didn’t know you weren’t well - it’s warming up over your cooktop.” He says soft yet brisk.
You’re back in pout mode and nod. “Thank you, ‘Kwan.”
Again he sighs and squeezes you, dropping a multitude of kisses into your freshly washed hair. You’re more at ease than you have been in days, fuzzy and clean. He reaches for the remote to change it to another food channel, the better of the two for this time of night, instead of the news like usual.
“Take your medicine while I go check on your soup.” Seungkwan murmurs, twirling a strand of your hair as he pulls away.
“Then tell me about your day?” You ask in a small voice.
He stops to turn and smile like you’re the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen. A smile so warm and hazy you’re sure it might burn.
“If that’s what you want, of course.”
Goodness, you loved him.

Ireland Headcanon Masterpost
Tumblr media
Artwork drawn by @nordickies
Part three of creating master posts for my interpretation of certain characters & nations. This time we’re doing the lovely miss Ireland! Who has been occupying my mind a lot recently. Before we get into it, I want to say that I have not been developing Ireland for even half as long as I have been every other character I have. She’s been a floating concept in my mind for years, but I only actually started to develop her properly last month. For most of the time I’ve had her, she’s just been a pretty face and a name, and I’ve been having so much fun actually exploring her. If you enjoy reading her information, I’ve also made posts for Scotland and my OC of Northumbria, both of those posts are going to be much longer than this one is.
I want to emphasise that I am no history expert, and I do not even wish to be associated with historical hetalia. However, as I am from England, it means I am treading a very fine line with my portrayal. That being said, if anyone from Ireland sees this post and takes issue with anything I say here, I encourage you to reach out and correct me! I am still learning, and, as I’ve said before, my portrayal is still very new.
PHYSICAL
Ireland stands at about 5’5, or about 165cm. Making her about the average height for an Irish woman. She still gets teased by Scotland for being “short.”
She has pretty small features. Small, green eyes, a tiny little button nose, and a small mouth with thin lips. She is very pretty, but she still looks quite approachable.
She has long, beautiful ginger hair. It’s pretty wavy, her natural texture is 2c, but she styles it pretty often. Her siblings have always loved to tease her about her hair- the colour and texture- so she’s pretty insecure about it.
She’s very good at styling her hair because of this, though she’s no longer a massive fan of fancy up does. She insists she’s no good on hair that isn’t her own, but she taught most of her siblings how to do at least a plait growing up.
Ireland is covered in freckles, from head to toe.
Her skin is naturally very pale, but it’s also very sensitive, and can turn red pretty easily. She always has to be careful about the stuff she puts on, or else she’ll come out in a rash.
She has a tooth gap between her two front teeth, it represents the River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland.
She has a rectangle body shape, although she used to be a bit curvier when she was younger.
Once rounder and softer, her body still hasn’t returned to how it looked before the potato famine of the 1800s. Her size is far healthier now, but she’s still quite thin and boney. Ireland is not her ideal size, and wishes she could gain a bit more weight to feel more comfortable.
That being said, her bottom is actually pretty plump. Representing the mountains that lie around the edge of Ireland.
Whilst she does like to wear make up every now and then, she’s actually pretty bad at it. Her application can be patchy, and she’s not the best at matching shades. It’s nothing you’ll notice straight away, however, and she genuinely does feel prettier when she wears it.
She has the Triskelion, or the Celtic Spiral Knot, tattooed on the inside of her upper, right arm. The symbol has different meanings depending on who you ask, but she had it tattooed to represent the continuous of life, and moving forward. It was also just a way for her personally to show that she will never, ever let her culture be stripped from her.
PERSONALITY
Ever the extrovert, Ireland is friendly and welcoming to everyone she meets. She has a natural ease about her, and a remarkable ability to make people comfortable around her quickly. Within 2 sentences, you could easily feel as though you’ve known her your entire life. Like you’re laughing and joking with an old friend.
Much like her brother, Scotland, Ireland is remarkable at comedy and making people laugh, she firmly believes a good sense of humour goes a long way. Her humour is a bit more lighthearted and witty than the rest of her siblings.
Ireland shows her affection through teasing and sarcasm. It’s how she jokes with her friends, and the more she teases you, the more she likes you. It could come across as mean, but her tone is usually playful enough to not cause harm.
Her culture truly means everything to her, and she loves sharing it with people. She actually loves meeting tourists, she loves telling them stories of her people, and she actually isn’t opposed to sharing her past with them. She will proudly gives them ideas of other places in Ireland to visit, and things to do, she hopes that everyone who takes the time to come visit leaves happy and smiling, having had a fun, interesting and informative experience.
However, she is also extremely protective and defensive of herself, her culture and her past. After years of oppression, being ignored and spoken over, who can blame her? She isn’t too appreciative when someone speaks on her behalf, she doesn’t like other’s sharing information without consulting her directly. She is vocal, and not afraid to step up and correct people, and put them in their place.
Empathy is where Ireland truly shines. Easily feeling and immediate connection with and understanding for those going through hardship. She will always be an advocate for the underdog, for those whose voices are not being properly heard. She longs to provide the compassion, and the feeling of having someone in your corner, that she lacked when she was suffering.
That being said, she can be very judgmental, and she’s a huge gossiper. She usually attempts to soften it by saying something like “and, god love them” or “god, bless their heart” or “but who am I to judge?” as though she’s not just been talking shit for the past hour.
Ireland cannot hide her feelings, and she doesn’t see the need to. She’s very open when she’s happy, upset, angry etc.
For as open a person as she can be, she still hasn’t quite processed her hurt and her negative feelings correctly. Choosing to brush it off, and pretend she no longer cares. She can grow very resentful because of this, but she absolutely refuses to accept this may be a problem.
Ireland can be feisty and fiery if need be, she knows how to defend herself and she will! She’s never been shy, no matter what, and she won’t let someone walk all over her. She never has, and she never will go down without a fight. She prides herself on this.
Ireland is extremely laid back, she’s not prone to jealousy or possessiveness, and she’s certainly not over-protective about anything. She doesn’t see the point of trying to cling onto someone, it all just seems pointless.
HOBBIES
Ireland is creative mind, and one of her best skills is gold-smithing and her ability to work with metals. She prefers to make her own jewellery, and she loves making fancy and intricate broaches especially. However, she mainly does smaller projects now, as her workshop is merely a cleared out space in her basement. She’d love to find a bigger place to rent out.
You will rarely ever find someone who’s a better storyteller than Ireland, she truly has a way with words. Be it short stories, poems or songs, she excels at it. She absolutely loved to share her stories with her siblings when they were growing up.
Music means a lot to Ireland, she wouldn’t know who she is without it, and as well as writing songs, she also sings. She doesn’t have the best voice, but it’s pretty and melodic. It’s soft and calming, and she has fine technic. But it’s certainly nothing special.
She also plays the harp, which she’s very skilled with.
Ireland loves a party and celebration, and she always goes all in. She seemingly never gets tired, or never needs to go home to rest, she can just keep going.
On a calmer note, she also loves just sitting in a pub and having a few casual drinks. Doesn’t need to be a celebration. She especially loves a proper Irish bar, and she almost has a sixth sense where she can find one wherever she goes.
Speaking of bars, Ireland is pretty good at snooker. She’s no hobbyist though. She and Scotland are at pretty much an equal level, and they’re the only two in the family who stand a chance of beating one another.
She loves a good walk around the countryside, and she’s always driving out of the city to have a stroll. Though she will constantly complain about the sheep blocking the road.
She does boxing, though she’s still a very low level beginner, and definitely not good enough to go up against anyone yet. It was a hobby she picked up a few years back, to try and help her build some strength and muscle.
As well as sharing her own, Ireland absolutely loves taking the time to learn about other cultures of the world too. Every time she has a meeting in a foreign country that she doesn’t visit too often, she tries to see and do as many cultural things as she can outside of work. She absolutely loves travelling.
She adores animals, she firmly believes they’re smarter than humans give them credit for, and she loves to draw them! She’s not the most skilled artist, she really only does sketch work in a sketch book. She rarely attempts to colour in, or smooth out the lines.
Ireland’s favourite, and her comfort show, is Father Ted, she puts it on whenever she’s upset. Without fail, it will always make her laugh, even if she’s seen every episode about 1000 times already.
Ireland enjoys knitting, alongside some of her other family members. She pretty much exclusively knits all of her own cardigans herself.
LIFESTYLE
Ireland uses the human name Saoirse O’Reilly, spelt as Saoirse Ní Raghallaigh in Irish.
However, Saoirse hasn’t always been Ireland’s preferred name. She used to use the name Aoibheann, but during English rule she was forced to take on the name Evelyn Kirkland. After Ireland gained its independence, Saoirse started being used more and more as a name because of its meaning being “freedom”. She has used Saoirse as her name ever since.
Irish is her first language, and she is determined to help keep the language alive. She offers tutoring lessons for people (Irish or not) to learn the language. Unfortunately, she’s not the best at teaching.
Alongside Irish, she also knows English, ISL (Irish Sign Language), Latin and BSL (British Sign Language). She knows a little bit of Manx and Scottish Gaelic.
Saoirse currently lives in Dublin. She used to own a farmhouse, but following independence she decided it’d be best to move to the city. She sometimes misses her old house, and you’ll catch her reminiscing on it. She doesn’t hate city life, though.
She is incredibly family oriented. If you ask Saoirse, family always has and always should come first. As the oldest, she helped raise all her siblings the best she could. She always felt closest to Northern Ireland and Scotland when they were growing up, and whilst she & Scotland are still close to this day, things with N. Ireland have been better. Their relationship has recently been… strained, to put it nicely. Saoirse is still waiting for the day when they can be close again. She never has and never will stop reaching out.
Ireland does not have any pets. However, for most of her life, she had a Wolf friend who would always find its way back to her no matter where she travelled. She did not own this wolf, it was free and was part of a pack, however, it was supposedly immortal, like many hetalia pets. It was killed in the 1700s. Ireland has a picture of it that she drew herself hung up in her living room.
In terms of religious beliefs, Saoirse would describe herself as “Catholic Pagan.” She might get some strange looks from foreigners who hear this term, but her religious beliefs combine both Catholicism and Celtic Paganism. She believes in the Lord, and in Jesus, but also believes in and sees traditional folk creatures. She seeks guidance and truth in tales from both religions.
Out of all of her siblings, Ireland is probably the worst driver. She usually is not in front of the wheel when someone else is in the car, because they don’t feel entirely safe in the car when she drives.
Saoirse is so bad when it comes to procrastination. She’s perhaps too laid back in that aspect. She doesn’t like to rush anything, and will continue to push back things she needs to do until she can actually be bothered. If anyone calls her out on it, she’ll blame the weather, saying something like, “have you seen how it’s raining out there? It’s not fit to do anything!”
She has a small fairy friend who lives at the bottom of her garden, named Órlaith, who likes to sneak inside the house and cause trouble when Saoirse isn’t in. Otherwise, you can sometimes see her fluttering above her shoulder. It’s not uncommon for the pair of them to gossip together about certain people they meet.
You’ll never not see her without a cup of tea. She perhaps has too much of it, drinking multiple cups at home, and taking some out with her in a travel mug if she’s going somewhere. If she’s visiting someone, she’ll be sat waiting to be offered a cup of tea. She drinks the most out of the whole family, which drives england nuts. She’ll get grumpy if she doesn’t have a cup of tea on a morning.

With the Impala's engine purring beneath them, Dean and Castiel set out on a journey that promised adventure, camaraderie, and the open road stretching before them like an invitation to freedom. The first rays of dawn began to break over the horizon as they drove, casting a soft, golden light across the landscape.
Dean glanced over at Castiel, who was gazing out the window with a serene expression. The sight of the angel bathed in the warm glow of the sunrise made Dean's heart swell with an unspoken emotion. He turned his attention back to the road, a small smile playing on his lips.
"Looks like it's gonna be a beautiful day," Dean said, his voice breaking the comfortable silence.
Castiel nodded, his eyes still on the horizon. "Yes, it is. The beginning of something new."
They drove in silence for a while longer, the Impala's steady hum the only sound. The sky shifted from deep blue to brilliant shades of orange and pink, the sun climbing higher with each passing minute. Eventually, Dean pulled the car over to a scenic overlook, the perfect spot to watch the sunrise in all its glory.
"Thought we could use a little break," Dean said as he killed the engine.
Castiel nodded in agreement, and they stepped out of the car. The air was crisp and fresh, carrying the promise of a new day. They leaned against the hood of the Impala, side by side, as they watched the sun rise over the rolling hills.
"It's beautiful," Castiel remarked, his voice soft and filled with awe.
Dean turned to look at him, the sunlight catching in Castiel's blue eyes and making them sparkle. "Yeah, it is," he agreed, though his gaze was fixed on Castiel rather than the horizon.
For a moment, they stood there in silence, soaking in the beauty of the moment. Dean felt a sense of peace he hadn't experienced in a long time. The burdens of their past and the uncertainties of their future seemed to fade away, leaving only the present moment and the quiet companionship they shared.
Eventually, they climbed back into the Impala and continued their journey. Their decision to take a break from hunting was a welcome respite from the constant battles against the supernatural. As they drove through small towns and vast expanses of countryside, they found themselves drawn into the rhythm of life on the road.
Their first stop was a quaint diner on the outskirts of town, where they indulged in greasy burgers and thick milkshakes. Amidst the clatter of dishes and the chatter of patrons, they shared stories of their past adventures, swapping tales of triumph and tragedy with equal parts humour and nostalgia.
As they continued their journey, they encountered quirky roadside attractions that sparked their curiosity and ignited their imaginations. From the world's largest ball of twine to a museum dedicated to the paranormal, each detour brought them closer together as they marvelled at the world's wonders.
But it wasn't just the sights that brought them closer; it was the conversations they shared along the way. In the quiet moments between destinations, they delved into profound and mundane topics, discussing their hopes, fears, and dreams for the future.
Dean opened up to Castiel in ways he never had before, sharing his insecurities and vulnerabilities with a rare honesty that surprised him. And Castiel, in turn, revealed glimpses of his humanity, showing a depth of emotion that belied his angelic nature.
One afternoon, as the sun began to set and painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, Dean pulled the Impala over by a secluded lakeside. The air was warm, and the sounds of nature filled the silence. They spread a blanket on the car's hood and lay back, looking up at the emerging stars.
"Dean, I think you should take a break from driving," Castiel suggested with a small smile, his eyes reflecting the starlight.
Dean chuckled. "Cas, you know I love my baby too much to let anyone else drive her. Besides, what could be better than this?"
Castiel's gaze softened. "I suppose you're right."
Dean's hand reached for the radio as they settled into a comfortable silence, tuning it to a station playing classic rock. The familiar strains of "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor filled the air, and Dean's face lit up with a mischievous grin.
"Oh no," Castiel said, recognizing the look in Dean's eyes.
Dean jumped out of the car and started singing along dramatically, using an invisible microphone. "Risin' up, back on the street! Did my time, took my chances!" His voice was strong and enthusiastic, if not exactly on key.
Castiel watched him for a moment, a smile tugging at his lips, before he, too, joined in. Though his singing was awkward and stiff, the joy in his eyes was unmistakable. Together, they belted out the lyrics, their voices mingling with the night air. They laughed at how ridiculous they must look, but it didn't matter. The moment was perfect.
As the song ended, they collapsed onto the blanket, laughing and breathless. Dean turned to Castiel, their faces close under the starry sky. "You know, Cas, we make a pretty good team," he said softly.
"Yes, Dean," Castiel replied, his voice equally soft. "I believe we do."
Their laughter faded into a comfortable silence, and their bond was stronger than ever. They lay there, side by side, the warmth of their bodies a silent reassurance of their unspoken feelings.
Eventually, the night grew calmer, and they retreated to the Impala's front seat. Dean turned the engine on, letting it idle as they reclined in their seats. The soft hum of the engine was a soothing background noise as they talked about everything and nothing.
As the hours passed, the conversation dwindled, and a peaceful quiet settled over them. Dean glanced at Castiel, who was staring out the window, lost in thought. He reached out and placed a hand on Castiel's shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze.
"Thanks for being here, Cas," Dean said, his voice filled with genuine gratitude.
Castiel turned to him, his blue eyes warm and earnest. "Always, Dean."
They drove on through the night, the road ahead uncertain and filled with challenges. But as long as they had each other, they knew they could face whatever the future held with courage and conviction. Two souls bound by destiny and a love that transcended time and space, their hearts united in the endless expanse of the open road.
