Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Review

It's the weakest entry in the rebooted series but still better than most other movies coming out nowadays.

Visually, the film is gorgeous. Serkis' films got the visuals better with each entry, and this may equal or top them. With so many big budget movies coming out looking half baked, and too many of them coming from Disney, it's nice to know that Hollywood can still do amazing visuals. All the apes look real. The ruins of human society slowly being reclaimed by nature are amazing. It has some of the best visual shots of someone walking through nature on a quest since Lord of the Rings. It has the best looking talking animals since The Jungle Book. The only minor quibble is that some of the apes look too similar to each other making it hard to know who's who at the beginning.

The cast is good all around. There's no new version of Andy Serkis, who brought a lot extra to the role, but again the movie doesn't try to just copy what worked before. Owen Teague's Noa goes through the classic hero's journey. Kevin Durand's Proximus chews the scenery and has some great dynamics and motivation, though he's introduced far too late. Though it's Peter Macon's Raka who has the best lines and most meaningful moments.

The story mostly works, though there's some glaring issues. The story takes a while to get going and the main conflict isn't even introduced till the third act. It continues having several Easter eggs for longtime fans, like having all the female humans named Nova though they don't know why. It's set hundreds of years after the fall of man, with our civilization being treated as a myth while Caesar has become a legend. It offers an interesting look at religious zealotry, with Proximus twisting Caesar's teachings to further his own selfish ambitions. Some of the best parts are the apes learning about the failed human society through old airports, apartments, vaults, etc.

In fact, it would have been better to just have the humans be the primitive tribes seen by Charlton Heston because the human in the story is the weakest part, at times being completely unnecessary. Freya Allan's Nova is obviously out of place, maintaining her model good looks and wearing modern clothes more appropriate to a weekend of camping than post-apocalypse surviving. At least the original movies tried to make Linda Harrison fit in. She also fits that annoying girlboss trend Disney is pushing so hard by being good at literally everything, knowing everything, manipulating everyone, and getting exactly her way. Thankfully, this comes pretty late in the movie and is used to further divide apes and humans. Her story is also used to very obviously set up a sequel and has little payoff. William H. Macy appears for a bit, though he phones it in and it seems they brought him on just because the previous three movies had big names as humans.

It would have been better to just get rid of the humans and rely on the strength of the apes' story alone. The last one did an excellent job wrapping up humanity's story and this could have easily just been about the ape society before Heston crash landed.

The Andy Serkis trilogy was something special that would've been difficult for most to follow. Luckily, this one doesn't try to top or even match it, just going its own way and doing a pretty good job in the process.

Tuskegee Airman Captain Richard D. Macon (August 21, 1921 – October 9, 2007) was born in Birmingham. He earned a BS in mathematics from Miles College. He joined the Army Air Forces and graduated from flying school at Tuskegee to become a fighter pilot. He deployed to Italy with the 302nd Fighter Squadron.

He was part of an escort mission to Toulon, France, to destroy radar stations. The target was destroyed, but the fighters drew ground fire. He was hit by flak, flipping his plane upside-down before it burst into flames. He passed out, falling against the control stick. His plane was thrown into a loop, tossing him from the P-51 Mustang. He woke 45 minutes later, he was lying in a field, surrounded by three German soldiers. He was taken to a field hospital, where he was diagnosed with a broken shoulder and broken neck.

He was in bad shape and appeared to have a fractured neck because every time he moved abruptly, he passed out,” Jefferson wrote in his book, “Red Tail Captured, Red Tail Free.” “We braced his neck and head to make them immovable. When we got him up the next morning, he had to walk very slowly, trying not to move his head.”

He was sent to the hospital where his neck was finally X-rayed and set. Before he could recuperate, Russian troops forced the Germans out of Sagan. His neck in a cast, was taken to Stalag XIII-D at Nuremberg. He was moved to Stalag VIIA at Moosburg.

Promoted to captain, he was honorably discharged. He was awarded an Air Medal and a Purple Heart for his military service. He organized a flight school in Birmingham. He learned that multimillionaire Howard Hughes controlled three hangers at the Birmingham Airport, and set up a meeting. Hughes permitted him to use part of a hanger for his flight school.

He earned an MS in Math from Indiana University before returning to Miles College as an associate professor. He accepted a teaching position at Detroit Public Schools; he retired in 1987. As the Trump campaign continues to crumble and the Harris/Walz ticket gains in the polls, especially in the all-important swing states, it's worth speculating just what Donald Trump will do in the increasingly likely event he loses his presidential race in November.

Back in October 2020, he mused to a rally crowd in Macon, Georgia: "Could you imagine if I lose? I'm not going to feel so good. Maybe I'll have to leave the country, I don't know." And that was even before he was convicted of 34 first-degree felonies, with more criminal prosecutions — including (among other charges) for conspiracy, racketeering, filing false documents, obstruction and espionage — in his future when he loses.

At a Las Vegas rally in early June, Trump told an adoring crowd of MAGA morons that they would meet in Venezuela next year, "Unless you make me President." The falling of one raindrop causes all drivers to immediately forget all traffic rules. If a single snowflake falls, the city is paralyzed for three days and it's on all the channels as a news flash every 15 minutes for a week. Overnight, all grocery stores will be sold out of milk, bread, bottled water, toilet paper, and beer.

I-285, the loop that encircles Atlanta, has a posted speed limit of 55-65 mph but you have to maintain 80 mph just to keep from getting run over and is known to truckers as "The Watermelon 500."

And 285 has wonderful directional signs that advise towns like “Augusta, Greenville, Chattanooga, Birmingham, Montgomery, and Macon” depending which part of the Circle of Hell you are trying to enter. BUT, 285 does NOT take you to any of those cities. It merely points you in a general direction that might lead you there eventually on other highways.

Hell, 285 won’t even take you to Atlanta. Just ask Pascual Perez.

Don't believe the directional markers on highways: I-285 is marked "East" and "West" but you may be going North or South. The locals identify the direction by referring to the "Inner Loop" and the "Outer Loop ." If you travel on Hwy 92 North, you will actually be going southeast.

Never buy a ladder or mattress in Atlanta. Just go to one of the interstates and you will soon find one in the middle of the road.

The last thing you want to do is give another driver the finger, unless your car is armored, your trigger finger is itchy, and your AR-15 has a full magazine.

Haleh was born in a small town outside of Istanbul, yet she remembers very little of her early years before moving to America with her mother and brother. Since she was only four years old when they left, what has lingered with her of the experience is rather watching the devastation and sorrow on her fathers face as he told them goodbye at the airport. Her parents' marriage was not a good one, and her mother wanted a fresh start in another country. Still to this day Haleh wonders what her life would have been like if she had not been moved across continents to a new and large country. As the youngest and only girl with quite the temper and a wilful mind, she was a handful for her mother to raise once they were on their own. Had it not been for her brother stepping up as man of the house once they moved then god knows what would have become of the stubborn child. She knew what she wanted and she rarely took no for an answer. To make matters more difficult, she was highly inquisitive and adventurous, which often led her to find both trouble and unwanted situations as a kid. Growing more into herself as a teenager, Haleh found the security she had grown up with to slowly vanish as her brother distanced himself and then went to college. The fact that he seemed to get into trouble with the law made her more conscious of her own actions, seeing the impact it all had on their mom. 

Yet a new world opened for Haleh once her mom allowed her to travel to visit her dad in Turkey. She felt at ease there, enriched by the culture that had colored her family for generations. Sure, some of it was a tad too old fashioned to her liking, like how her father frowned and forewarned her each time she mentioned a boyfriend or became strict and overbearing in terms of her becoming a woman with urges. But she still loved every second of her visits to her homeland. There she found her life’s passion, dancing. She learned traditional Turkish dances, and went home to Louisiana to enroll in dance school and compete with her dance team in High school. It was during one of these competitions that a scout from one of the largest Dance Academies came to offer Haleh a scholarship. Despite the fact that the school was in New York, far away from her small town Louisiana life and her mom, Haleh accepted. Her dreams were all coming true. Besides, Evren was distancing himself more and more from them, making her feel like if she didn’t get out herself she would be stuck in a small town without any future. Her brother had broken away from them, and while she partly resented him for it, she felt as if it was a sign that she needed a life of her own. Even if it meant leaving her mom behind for a while. 

After four years taking an extensive bachelor degree at the academy, Haleh went on to accept a job with one of the largest dance companies in the country. They toured all over America, and even went to Europe every now and then. The training, dieting and focus required of her was brutal, demanding all of her attention. Still, she loved what life had brought her, and she was able to visit both her parents quite often. The only person who brought her constant heartache and who she both was angry at and missed equally, was her older brother. Evren chose prison to protect his so called friends. People who had dragged him into the ultimate type of trouble to begin with. And then he took care of the same people’s child.. Her mother could not stand by his choices, and neither could Haleh. How could he choose them over his own family? How could he neglect them yet devote all his time to those peoples kid? The estrangement only grew in the wake of those choices. Yet Haleh spent nights in tears, feeling as if she had lost her brother to strangers. Been left behind and overlooked in place of what she could only assume was his chosen family. Many an argument was had, but eventually Haleh accepted that she had to move on with her life as best she could. If he wanted to be in it, then the ball was in his court. But if he didn’t then that was his choice. For a while, she visited her mom less. The memories of her childhood, and the person who was no longer present in their family was too painful for her to be reminded of. She tried to get her mom to come see her instead, but the woman was too involved with her work and friends at home, and didn’t want to leave the comforts of home. Then the brutal phone call came. Her mother had advanced heart disease, and would need extensive treatment and care. The kind that required Haleh to resign from the dance company and move back home. 

In the beginning, Haleh was too scared to think much on the sacrifice she had made for her mom. This was the woman who had raised her, nurtured her, always supported her. Of course she was going to be there in her time of need. And god forbid she died.. Then she would not be anywhere else but at her side. But the treatments soon cost more than her moms savings could cover, and her insurance was not sufficient either. Haleh quickly realized that if she didn’t act now, her mom would not get the treatment she needed, and the consequences would be fatal. In her mind, she had no choice but to search for some type of job that would come with a high salary and quick cash. An old college friend, one of the ones that had dropped out of the academy was working as an escort. She offered to introduce Haleh to her boss, and before she knew it, she was selling her company, but always at the end of the night, her body, to men who could afford to pay for it. Her boss, sensing that Haleh was desperate and would do anything, talked her into selling cocaine to her customers. In her worst moments, Haleh relied on the drug herself, to feel better about the situation she suddenly found herself in. 

But it was all worth it to her, because she could buy her moms house and when she needed more specialized care at a bigger hospital, lease an apartment in New Bellevoux where they could both stay. She could also pay for a live-in nurse to help her mom when she wasn’t present and make sure she got to all her appointments and treatments. Her mother worries where all this money is coming from, though Haleh has been elusive about her new jobs. She doesn’t want her mom to know what she’s doing, nor does she want to talk about it in detail. She’s ashamed of it, but also stubborn enough to convince herself it is her only solution to the problem. It's not as if her brother, who she hasn’t spoken much to in the last five years, is going to help.. 

Facts about Haleh ;;

Haleh has several Nazar(Evil Eye) symbols about her apartment, as well as a lot of other trinkets and foods that are Turkish. She makes sure to stay in contact with her culture, as it makes her feel grounded and safe. 

When she was younger, she used to playfully refer to Evren as baba whenever he was acting like her dad rather as her older brother. 

Haleh mixes Turkish and English, especially when she is upset or angry. She will rapidly switch between the two languages. 

Since the moment she was old enough to notice the opposite sex, Haleh has been chasing boys, only occasionally being the one chased. She’s always had a boyfriend or a lover in the wings. For the first time in her life, she is single. 

Haleh is and has always been a very girly girl. She wears a lot of bright colors, but since passing her teens she’s gone for the more bold and deeper tones rather than pastels which she used to wear. She loves using make up to make an impact, but because she has naturally large eyes and defined lips(and generally is confident in her looks) she does not wear a lot of make up in her every day life. Putting on make up has also a connotation to doing dance performances for her, which means it is a relief to not wear too much when she isn’t on a stage. 

Briefly, before ending up as an escort, Haleh taught modern dance and ballet at a dance school in the local community where her mom’s house/childhood home and neighborhood is located. 

She has a female Turkish van cat named Göz, which means ‘Eye’. 

Haleh has kind of taken the best from Islam and Christianity and decided on her own kind of religious beliefs. She isn’t very strict on it or pious in any sense, but she prays to a higher power when she feels she needs support that only a God can offer, and she thinks values that revolve around family and loyalty are important. She also celebrates both Id and Christmas, but also easter. The importance to her during these is being with your loved ones and appreciating what you have in life. 

When she can’t deal with something, she becomes very sarcastic and sardonic. It is a warning sign to those who know her well to either switch subjects, or risk her exploding entirely. When she first gets angry it can be quite hard to make her calm down or listen. 

The situation she is currently in makes her fairly bitter and resentful. She feels as if the world is sitting on her shoulders and as if her brother is the lucky one who does not know about their mom being sick, and gets to have his own life when she’s had to give up hers. 

Deep down, all Haleh want’s is for her family to be whole again, and to have her brother back in her life. She misses how close she and Evren used to be when they were younger.

Good news everyone! Georgia has federal passenger train study funding!

In combination with some great news about funding a lot of sorely needed railroad projects and studies at the federal level, Georgia’s U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock announced new grants to explore three new Georgia passenger rail corridors, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The new rail routes would connect major economic centers in Georgia and neighboring states, providing additional public transit options, increased mobility, and a sustainable, clean-energy future.

Starting from Atlanta, the routes being studied are:

A route heading northward with stops likely in Marietta, Cartersville, Dalton and points north into Tennessee that would connect with Chattanooga and efforts in that state to create a line from there to Nashville.

Extending south and eastward, a route that would likely have intermediate stations in McDonough, Macon and end in Savannah with a connection to the Amtrak route linking Florida and DC on the east coast. There’s also the potential to create a branch that would go due south out of Macon, through Valdosta and link with Tampa or Orlando. It would be nice to get some two-state talks going with Florida on doing something together since Brightline is already plying the rails down there and its now a known quantity.

Perhaps the most interesting and likely first to get going is a high-speed line between Atlanta and Charlotte. The in-state routing on this one is not known, but it’d be very strange if Athens was missed. The growing South Carolina towns of Greenville/Spartanburg definitely and perhaps Anderson/Clemson would get stops depending on routing.

Another point of discussion is where exactly in Atlanta would these routes be emanating from; ATL’s current train station for Amtrak service on the thrice weekly Crescent service from DC to New Orleans is basically a glorified waiting room with rails and stairs that lead to Peachtree Rd just north of Midtown. There were some efforts to build a new multimodal station Downtown right across from the Five Points MARTA station, right where a bunch of railroad tracks pass through a trench. While we do need a world-class rail terminal for a world-class city like Atlanta (especially to help get a commuter rail service off the ground — more on that later,) let’s not ignore our 900-pound gorilla lying 8 miles south: Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Literally the World’s Busiest Airport for 20+ years definitely needs to be tied into any long-distance (and commuter!) rail options here. The catchment area of passengers includes not just the entire state but anything that would beat a car ride from an area of about 200 miles in diameter around us. Every time I’ve been in one of Hartsfield’s parking garages, I’ve seen cars with South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee tags that are definitely not rentals. With frequent enough service, it could be very possible to simply leave the car and take the train to the airport and catch a flight. Most Americans can’t realize this convenience right now but take it from me after living in Japan for almost 20 years, being able to just hop a train even in the most remote parts of the area and get to Haneda, Narita, Kansai and Nagoya Centrair airports without worrying about long-term parking or begging for a ride from friends is a great thing.

According to Axios, how much of the $8.2 billion will wind up in Georgia for its rail project — or the timeline for the project’s start and completion is a big question mark. One thing I’d like to know is does some of this money help look into a regional rail solution here around Atlanta that’s desperately needed. Just like NYC, LA and Chicago, whatever helps the commuter rail network, would ultimately be good for the longer distance trains as well since they could share the tracks. That ATL Trains idea is still the best idea I’ve ever seen and really, REALLY needs to be formally studied with this money. Check out the 146-page prospectus yourself, it’s that good!

Just like the Eisenhower Interstate Highway projects of the 1960s, the US really needs a rail renaissance in order to help face this brave new world of climate change, population and demographic shifts into sunbelt cities that didn’t keep up infrastructure-wise (building another lane isn’t cutting it Chief!) and the simple paradigm shift of decentralization in our metro areas in general– How many people do you know BEFORE the pandemic that worked “downtown?” OK, now how many people actually even go to an office every day? Our transportation network needs to be more dynamic and flexible to account for these shifts and overlaying a decent rail network, both nationally and locally, is paramount. This is in addition to dealing with improving road and air travel; those need to be sorted as well.

This post is devoted to the concert appearance in Macon, GA.  Elvis arrives at the airport in the early morning hours of June 1 and is then seen entering a hotel via a rear entrance.  Then we see him later the same day, dressed in the Mexican Sundial jumpsuit and leaving the hotel with girlfriend Ginger Alden, Sam Thompson in the red jacket and road manager Joe Esposito.  Dick Grob is wearing the white shirt with blue inserts.  Leaving the hotel for the show involved almost getting his clean white costume dirty while jumping down into a filthy loading dock at the back of the hotel.  After a limousine ride, we then see The King on stage in Georgia for what would later be the last time.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN

At 3:29 ET on August 30, 2021—early on the morning of August 31 in Afghanistan—the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan ended. It was the longest war in American history.

Among the last to come home were the 13 Americans killed in an ISIS-K attack last Thursday. They arrived at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware Sunday morning from Germany. President Joe Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley, and 8 aides attended the dignified transfer between the plane and a waiting vehicle.

In the last 17 days in Afghanistan, U.S. troops evacuated more than 120,000 people, making up the largest airlift in our history. For comparison, as Jennifer Rubin of the Washington Post pointed out, the U.S. evacuated no Americans from the civil war in Yemen in 2015, and only about 167 from Libya in 2011.

While critics have suggested that America’s withdrawal from Afghanistan will hurt American credibility abroad, President Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken have called for combatting terrorism through financial sanctions, bombing, and drone strikes like the one they used to retaliate against ISIS-K for the attack on the Kabul airport that killed more than 160 Afghans and 13 Americans last Friday, and by strengthening democracy at home.

There is plenty of work to do on that last front.

Last week, Peter Wehner, who served in the Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush administrations, pointed out in The Atlantic that the right wing has moved to such extremism that former president Trump, whose behavior seemed so shocking in 2015 and 2016, is now being sidelined by lawmakers and pundits who are even more extreme.

Yesterday, in an event hosted by the Macon County Republican Party, Representative Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) insisted that the January 6 rioters are “political hostages” and said he wanted to “bust them out.” When someone in the audience asked “When are you going to call us to Washington again?” he said, “We are actively working on that one…. We have a few plans in motion that I can’t make public right now.” He called for removing Biden from office under the 25th Amendment and added, “when Kamala Harris inevitably screws up, we will take them down, one at a time.” He concluded by saying: “The Second Amendment was not written so that we can go hunting or we can shoot sporting clays…. The Second Amendment was written so that we can fight against tyranny.”

Increasingly, right-wing agitators are calling for violent overthrow of the government.

Today in Pennsylvania, Steve Lynch, a candidate for Northampton County executive, said: “Forget going into these school boards with freaking data. You go into these school boards to remove them. I’m going in with 20 strong men and I’m gonna give them an option—they can leave or they can be removed.”

At a protest in Santa Monica yesterday before a vote on a mask mandate, a man held a sign with the names and home addresses of each Los Angeles City Council member and said protesters would go to the homes of anyone who voted for the mandate and, if it passed, “Civil War is coming! Get your guns!”

This sort of street-level violence is known for radicalizing individuals as they get swept up in it and then later embrace the larger political arguments behind it. It also forces more reasonable individuals out of government positions as they conclude that their position on a school board, for example,  is not worth threats against their families and their lives.

Far from trying to tamp down this violence, right-wing leaders are egging it on. Tonight, on the Fox News Channel, personality Tucker Carlson told his audience that no leader had apologized for “these terrible decisions” in Afghanistan. “This can’t go on,” he said. “When leaders refuse to hold themselves accountable, over time, people revolt…. We need to change course immediately… or else the consequences will be awful.”

The images on the screen behind Carlson were of President Biden, Secretary of State Blinken, Defense Secretary Austin, and Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Milley. Carlson often tries to undermine the current leadership of the military, suggesting that he would welcome its replacement by officers he finds less objectionable.  

Republican offense may be an attempt at defense.

Today, Representative Bennie Thompson (D-MS), chair of the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, announced that the committee has demanded that 35 major communications companies preserve their records from April 1, 2020, to January 31, 2021, for people involved in the January 5 and January 6 rallies in Washington, D.C., or “potentially involved with discussions” about stopping the electoral vote count on January 6 or otherwise  “potentially involved with discussions" in planning the January 6 insurrection. According to CNN, the companies affected include cell phone giants Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, US Cellular, and Sprint. Social media companies covered under the request include Apple, Google, Facebook, Signal, Slack, YouTube, Twitch, and Twitter.

CNN reports that members of the committee have requested preservation of the records of representatives Cawthorn, Lauren Boebert (R-CO), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), Jim Jordan (R-OH), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Paul Gosar (R-AZ), Mo Brooks (R-AL), Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Jody Hice (R-GA), and Scott Perry (R-PA). They have also asked the companies to preserve the records of former president Trump; those of his children Ivanka Trump, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump; and those of his daughter-in-law Lara Trump and Don Jr.’s girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle, who worked on the campaign.

Those determined to regain control of the country from the Democrats also have to contend with continuing good news from Biden’s policies. A new study from the Center on Poverty and Social Policy at Columbia University shows that the first child tax credit payment kept 3 million children from falling below the poverty line and that the child poverty rate dropped from 15.8% in June to 11.9% in July. Coronavirus relief measures kept another 3 million children from poverty. Families are using the money to buy food and pay off debt.

The administration is also coordinating aid to the states hit hard by Hurricane Ida, which brought up to 15 inches of rain to parts of Louisiana and knocked out the state’s power grid. The administration deployed more than 3,600 employees of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, who prepared more than 3.4 million meals, millions of liters of water, more than 35,700 tarps, and roughly 200 generators in the region before the storm hit. They have moved ambulances and search and rescue teams into the area and have opened shelters. The Army Corps of Engineers has mobilized personnel to remove debris and to provide temporary roofing and housing.

The administration is shifting its focus from unilateral military might to multilateral alliances to deal with common problems. Tomorrow, Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry will leave for Asia, where he will meet with leaders from Japan and then China to bolster international cooperation on climate change before the meeting of the 2021 U.N Climate Change Conference in early November.
