It is time for
This year the event will be hosted by Snow Miku! Not exactly magical girls but close enough design wise.
Here is the magical girl media consumed on this blog this year:
(Delicious Party Precure, Futari wa Precure Max Heart, Magia Record s3, Machikado Mazoku s2, Tokyo Mew Mew New, Magic Users' Club! (OVA), Magic User's Club! (Tv), Tropical Rouge! Precure season movie, Futari wa Precure Max Heart season movies 1 & 2)
At first it looked like I barely read any magical girl manga this year, but then ended up reading a couple in the final few weeks of the year:
(Magilumiere co ltd, Time Stranger Kyoko (reread), The Life After Retirement of Magical Girls, No Match for Aoi-kun, Magical Lollipop)
Also I read a lot of magical girl webcomics!
(Magical Mom, Sleepless Domain, Cloudy Wondrous, Apricot Cookie(s)!, Miss Guillotine, Strawberry Seafoam)
Then let's go through the events that happened this year. We had a tournament for the favourite Precure, and Cure Milky was the winner! This time it has taken even longer to draw the celebratory art for the winners than last year and I'm still not done, but I guess nobody but me really cares about that so all is well.
We also had a poll for most/least favourite magical girl elements, which I used to compile the most liked and least liked magical girls (though I think the least liked one turned out to be more popular). I really liked this idea and would like to do something more with it one day, or at least just get statistics on people's opinions on different magical girl tropes for fun.
I also did both Mermay and Witchtober this year (and Adorkastock Draw Everything June which I've done every year since its inception), which included a lot of magical girl content. I like these monthly drawing challenges since I enjoy drawing a set of themed characters, and usually the results are a lot more varied than the stuff I usually draw. So next year I'd like to do some more, but I'll have to find different challenges so it won't get repetitive, this was the second Mermay I did and while it mostly involved characters I never draw otherwise, I'd still like to give that spot to something else next time.
Saban Moon was unleashed to the public this year, which did not affect me that much since I have very little relationship with Sailor Moon, but I can still appreciate unearthing a secret alternative version of a well known character (also it was my most popular drawing this year)
This year I started and exercise project by trying to motivate myself with the reward of buying a Miku Nendoroid each time I exercise a certain amount of times. It has been mostly successful, or there are breaks but they are a lot shorter than they would ever be without a prize looming in the future. Much recommended!
Finally one thing that's different from last year that I didn't draw a lot of characters for my magical girl chibi series, because I was busy drawing a different kind of chibi series (hundreds of Pokemon chibis on my other blog). And this chibi style spread to several of my other fandoms too, I used it on the Witchtober, and I've done four (I think) sets of requests in it.
Finally a mention to my frustration on the lack of green Precures culminating in a series of green Precure OCs.
Then onto the awards!
Best Henshin Design goes to Cloudy Wondrous! A solid design where everything works together (I’m especially a fan of the cloud motif used in different places), and the unique details (crown, wing eyepatch thing) make it more memorable.
Best Team Design goes to Tokyo Mew Mew New! Granted I think I like the original designs more, but TMM team design is still strong here as well, it's recognisable as TMM but highly customisable for OCs.
Best Powerup Design goes to Strawberry Seafoam! Or they should probably rather be called separate forms on the same level with different purposes rather than increasing in power, but who's counting. They are all pretty (as are the other mermaids' transformations) but let's say the jellyfish one is my favourite, it has such warm glowing palette (but also an illuminated dark mode!) and it creates a unique silhouette.
Also a shoutout to Cure Spicy's Party Up Style "hat".
Best Civilian Design goes to Amane's winter look from Delicious Party Precure! It just looks so comfy...
Best Hair goes to Sae from Magic User's Club! It's pretty simple compared to the usual absurd magical girl hairstyles, but I like how the angular shapes make it memorable.
Best Magical Item goes to Bijou's pen from Strawberry Seafoam! It looks pretty, and I like magic where you actually draw your spells. And it's fun to see her style evolve!
Best Henshin Scene goes to the dresser henshin in Magilumiere! Overall it has a lot of creative henshin and I really hope it gets animated some day!
Best Fan Creation is the catch-all award for everything that's not from, like, a big corporation, and this year the competition is really tough with all these highly polished webcomics, on a normal year any one of them would have been the winner but now I have to pick one. And it is also this year's Best Work, so more on that later!
Best Relationship goes to the group in Magic Users' Club! Their relationships feel very natural, and everyone has something different going on with the other characters. And while there is a little drama, the overall vibe is delightfully positive.
Best Mascot goes to Kome-Kome from Delicious Party Precure! Personality or plot-wise there's nothing that interests me about her, but it must be said that I'm a sucker for progressively aging designs and she's also stupidly cute.
Best Supporting Character goes to the 4th wall breaking Director of Darkness, from Apricot Cookie(s)! He just cracks me up every time he is on panel with his friendly and welcoming attitude.
Honourable mention to Mari-chan from Precure who is the best character in the season but who unfortunately doesn’t get to do much.
Best Visual goes to the art style of Strawberry Seafoam! Bold and unique glowing saturated colours that somehow feel nostalgic. Special mention to all the swirly magic.
Honourable mention to the art style shifts Apricot Cookie(s)!, sometimes the art goes to retro manga or anime or 3d idol dance models for fun. And another honourable mention to the visual presentation of the Apricot Cookies website.
Best Audio goes to the Shiny Luminous / Queen theme in Futari wa Precure Splash Star (not the henshin one but the one when she’s doing something epic). Feels very majestic.
For the Best Scene I don’t have anything specific that comes to mind over everything else this year, so let’s say Kuroe’s fate in MagiReco, Shiny Luminous in the Max Heart finale and Grandma’s fate in Apricot Cookie(s)! can share it.
Innovation Award is for honouring a work doing something new and refreshing for the magical girl genre. This year I read several webcomics (that generally get to be more innovative than commercial anime) and even one actual manga that focused on "magical girls as a job", but each with a little different angle. So a shoutout to Magilumiere Co ltd, Sleepless Domain, Cloudy Wondrous, Apricot Cookie(s)!, Miss Guillotine and Magical Mom! With this many of them it'd feel a little weird to pick any for the "innovation award" over the same topic, so let's reward Magical Mom, for having, well, the magical mom! Magical girls whose mother is also a magical girl are of course a thing, but this time the child is a boy, and the mother also is an active and prominent character (and not just a background mentor), so that is new to me.
Then the Golden Mana Award, that is the dishonourable mention awarded to one thing I didn't like this year!
This year it goes to Porun from Futari wa Precure Max Heart. Frankly he was probably more annoying in the original Futari wa but I had something else to complain about that year so now it's his turn. For the life of me I can't understand how this would be an appealing character concept even for children, like don't even 5-year-olds get annoyed at a toddler sibling's tantrums interrupting their big kid play? Even his less overtly irritating scenes don't do much for me, since they rely on "aww isn't it cute how the baby wants to be with you" mushiness.
Also another dishonourable mention to downgrading Pudding’s jumpsuit into a dress.
Best Character goes to Kuroe! (from MagiReco) I really like her design (especially how it mirrors Iroha’s), her quiet and hesitant personality and her melancholic story that felt fresh among all the magical girls who excitedly jump into saving every passerby. Or I don’t really like how she fit in the larger narrative, but in isolation I think her story was interesting.
Best Work goes to Apricot Cookie(s)! It's really funny and the art is great, and the character designs are memorable. The heroine is charmingly dumb and everyone in her family is great. And it took a while to grow on me, but in the end the weeb references make me feel at home.
Plans for 2023
I didn't manage to get any of the shorter mg shows from last year's list (though I did watch Magic User’s Club which wasn’t on the list) so those are still there. I'd also like to watch two series from the Precure backlog, this year I only managed one.
Art-wise I plan to do more for the chibi series, and do another "x colour Precure oc" series. And I'd really like to draw more art that has, like, a background or a mood or a composition, but let's see if that goes anywhere.
(also hopefully more Miku Nendoroids)

Dust Watched: Machikado Mazoku: 2-choume
Genres: Comedy, Magical Girls (and Demons), CGCDT // 12 episodes // S01 (x)
I did go into this one with the right expectations this time! @ my review of season 1
✧ story ✧
The story continues directly from season 1's so for an overall plot description please read my review of that.
It's now the summer break and both Momo and Mikan move into the delipidated apartment building where Yuuko lives, making their involvement in the story much easier now that we don't have the school for the characters to meet. The first half of the story is looking for clues about Momo's older sister, Sakura. This portion is definitely more tightly paced, while the second half kiiiiind of focuses on Yuuko improving her powers but that usually takes a backdrop in exchange for the comedy.
Speaking of the comedy, it's very safe, cute, ridiculous, and goofy, nothing that would have you on the floor wheezing but good for an occasional chuckle. They also got better at inserting the occasional "grounded moments" inbetween the comedy so it doesn't become too tired too fast.
✧ characters ✧
Yuuko has a pretty big revelation this season but she changes the least I'd say. Momo's change is more subtle but has a big impact on the story. She doesn't seem to feel the need to keep her defences up around Yuuko anymore and admits to herself that she actually really likes her and wants to spend more time with her and you know, in a perfectly straight way not at all in a "I invited you out on a date but you didn't realize that it was supposed to be a date and brought other people with you so I'll spend the rest of the episode sulking about it" kind of way. (Momo's pining is very cute is what I'm trying to say.)
Khm, anyway, there are 2 (well, I guess 3 but that's a spoiler) new characters, Lico, a Huli Jing, and her ever-suffering boss, Manager Shirosawa, a talking bipedal tapir. They are both demons, and work at Asura Café. They get involved in the story during the search for Sakura where they play a significant part but pretty much disappear in the second half. They're a nice little addition to the cast but don't make too strong of an impression.
And to my dismay, despite Mikan moving to this town, she barely gets any actual screentime. When her magical girl powers don't need using, or her curse isn't used for a gag, she makes no substantial appearance in the story until the last 2 episodes. Probably my biggest disappointment with the show.
✧ art ✧
It's very cute, the transformations are smooth and pretty, and the visual gags are great too. It goes a little wonky on faraway shots but nothing too distracting.
✧ sound ✧
The music is *also* very cute and fluffy, not particularly my style but went well with the CGCDT comedy vibes. Of course I need to mention how delighted I was when I heard Itou Ayasa's recognizable Kyoto dialect coming out of Lico's mouth (Revstar's Kaoruko). Everyone else did a great job too.
✧ overview ✧
This style of comedy is a bit too weak for me to fully appreciate but nevertheless I had a fun time watching this season!
My Rating: 7/10

Hapuriainen's animation, comics & games of 2022
It feels every year these get shorter and later... but better late than never!
Anime:
Ranking of Kings, Magia Record s3, Machikado Mazoku s2, Futari wa Precure Max Heart, Delicious Party Precure, Spy x Family (part 1), Tiger & Bunny s2 (part 1), Yashahime s2, Magic User's Club, Tokyo Mew Mew New
Overall Yashahime was a disappointment but at least the Moroha stuff was good. As for Tiger & Bunny it was a delight to have Kotetsu back since this was my number one series back when the first season came out, but the netflix release model really killed all momentum it could have had and I still haven't managed to watch the second half.
Webcomics:
Magical Mom, Cloudy Wondrous, Apricot Cookie(s)!, Strawberry Seafoam, Miss Guillotine
This year I read a lot of webcomics, which has been documented on my magical girl tumblr. On the manga front there wasn't anything new but I still continue with many series from past years. A shoutout to One Piece for having its worst year to date but at least the Wano arc is now finally over.
Movies:
Encanto, Turning Red, Lightyear, some Precure movies, Children of the Sea
Games:
Zelda Skyward Sword, Link's Awakening, New Pokemon Snap, Hyrule Warriors DE, Pokemon Let's Go Eevee, Pokemon Scarlet
Overall this has been a Game year (rather than anime or manga). I learned that nowadays games save on the console and not the cartridge so I could borrow games from the library and only buy them myself if I liked them enough (and then continue on the same save file). Unfortunately this was after I spent money on Skyward Sword which was not worth the 60€, meanwhile New Pokemon Snap and Pokemon Let's Go were enjoyable for the price tag of 0€ and Hyrule Warriors I had to get for myself and now I have over 100 hours on it. And Pokemon Scarlet was surprisingly fun too.
The awards:
Best work: I guess I have to give this to Hyrule Warriors since I've played it unexpectedly much, the story was dumb but I'm having a lot of fun in Adventure Mode.
Best music: Tal Tal Heights from Link's Awakening, Hyrule Warriors in general having a lot of good music, Area Zero music from Pokemon. Also the Bruno song.
Best visuals: Strawberry Seafoam for reminding me of retro girl shows
Best character design: Cloudy Wondrous, a very cute and creative magical girl look
Best OP: Spy x Family, the song is mellow and fun and the visuals are great
Best ED: Spy x Family for the visuals, no real standout songs this year
Biggest WTF: Children of the Sea overall, what even happened in that movie??
Best Girl: Kuroe from MagiReco
Best Boy: Ehh let's go with Bruno
Best Side Girl: the queen from Ranking of Kings being a surprising highlight of the whole show
Best Side Boy: Arven from Pokemon seemed super cringe at first sight but his bread storyline turned out to be the best part of the whole game. Also Groose from Zelda
Worst Girl: No total duds this year, let's go with Yui from Precure. Or Yuuko from Machikado Mazoku
Worst Boy: n/a
Worst Side Girl: Cia from Hyrule Warriors with her dumb outfit. Or (I'm sorry I know she's popular) Iono from Pokemon kind of annoys me... Oh right also Fi
Worst Side Boy: Trace from Pokemon Let's Go was a major disappointment for a final boss and it didn't really feel anything beating him. Also Porun from Precure
Best romance: For the first time in years I have a ship (botw Link and Zelda) but since I didn't play it this year, let's say that Loid and Yor are always a delight to see in how positive and respectful their relationship is
Best non-romantic relationship: the Spy x Family family stuff
Worst romance: Hyrule Warriors making it a plot point that the game's Link and Zelda will end up as a couple but giving them zero chemistry or development
Worst non-romantic relationship: Yashahime for keeping the new heroines separate from their parents 99% of the time
Plans for 2023:
Botw 2 can’t come out soon enough
Until then I’ll probably keep playing Hyrule Warriors
Pokemon Arceus
Hirogaru Precure
Overall expecting a very Precure year, since they revealed new sequel seasons and I have to watch the originals by then
Evangelion has been on my watch list since 2014, maybe I’ll eventually get to it if I keep including it.
Tiger & Bunny & Spy x Family part 2
TMM New s2

Tag 9 people you'd like to know better except I won't because I'm lazy
Favourite colour: I don't even know anymore. It has been, in the past, red, blue, and black, but currently not really too particular about it. Probably not green or yellow.
Reading: An excessive amount of law textbooks and articles about human rights and statutory interpretation in light of section 6 of the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act. Don't know what that means? I envy you intensely.
Last song: Oddloop by Frederic, the Chocobo riding theme from FFXIV, or random snippets of Jotaro's theme from Stardust Crusaders in a video compilation of Jotaro smiling that I was watching, depending on how you interpret the phrase "last song".
Last series: I'm currently catching up on Stone Ocean, does that count? The last series I finished would be Machikado Mazoku season 2, I think. Or BBC's Merlin, depending on how you interpret the word 'series'-
Last movie: ... The Kiniro Mosaic movie. The English fansubs, I tell you, were a thing of beauty. They somehow turned Karen saying "Bye!" in English into Karen shouting "Drugs!"
Sweet/spicy/savoury: Uh... sweet. Where do you think a certain cat's sweet tooth came from? Savoury second, spicy last. I can't handle spice, it cleans out my innards rather painfully.
Currently working on: a dissertation so I can finally graduate, catching up on MSQ in FFXIV, and making Nyalter a better character.
Tagged by: @hxroic-wxlls
Tagging: Nobody because I'm lazy! Steal it ya yobbos.
#ooc#((reading that through))#((my damn dissertation has made me obsessed with interpreting things))#((oh yeah this feels like hella oversharing))#((I am feeling rambly though))

What magical girls series are out right now ?
Hey there! The short answer is... :/// not a lot.
Healin Good Precure’s last episode is next Sunday, and will be followed up by Tropical Rogue Precure, plus the Healin Good Movie is set for March
Mewkledreamy is still airing at the moment
The Sailor Moon Dream Arc Movies 1 and 2 have just released in japan, and hopefully will find an easy way for a global release soon
I Guess? There’s a third season of Seizei Ganbare! Mahou Shoujo Kurumi airing right now which is a parody series (4 minute episodes)
Next season, so in about 6-7 weeks, Fairy Ranmaru: Anata no Kokoro Otasuke Shimasu starts which is a magical man series so take that how you will
Show by Rock really had more One character who fit the Magical Girl bill imo, but there’s another season of that on right now, and another series for Wixoss which is not a magical girl series but if you like Puella-level dark and card games, it’s a decent MG Adjacent series
America is also giving us Owl House and while the second season isn’t scheduled for a specific date yet, it is a fish out of water witch reversal series like Little Witch Academia and Tweeny Witches, rather than the classic ‘witch comes to human world’ plot of the earliest majokko series
Crunchyroll has also apparently finished High Guardian Spice which looked like a MG series to some from the trailer, but for dumb reasons the release is postponed until ???
Korea has Catch! Teenieping, and another season (series?) of Flowering Heart 년: 3기 - 우수하 구출 스토리
Miraculous Ladybug is still going
For live action, Police x Heroine Lovepatrina! is still airing at the moment and I wouldn’t be surprised if we got another Girl x Heroine series once that is complete.
Then for the future uhhh. There’s another season of Magia Record planned, Machikado Mazoku season 2, a third Yuki Yuna, a new Tokyo Mew Mew anime, and the Sailor Moon Crystal Stars ???adaptation all planned for... ?the future? And I would expect them to so a second season of Card Captor Sakura Clear Card when the manga wraps up
Oh and a second season of Etotama if you count that as a MG series? And Luminous Witches which is a more music leaning Strike Witches spin off? Still seems more MG than SW
It’s also the 10′th anniversary of Puella Magi Madoka Magica and they have a big ol website about with with. No real info on it but maybe? Perhaps? The big project for celebration is the follow up to the Rebellion movie? Maybe. Eventually. Maybe.
And then for manga except for the TMM special (not Au Lait) ending, I don’t think anything else has really changed from last year’s list of series
Of course. this is all a bit subjective since what Is a magical girl varies person to person (and country to country- do we mean Majokko or Henshin Heroine?). Generally, people are looking for The Aesthetics of fun outfits, Characters who are driven by helping people and/or bettering themselves (usually to become a good queen), and a Story that uses conflicts to improve the characters (be it a man vs self classic majokko episodic series, or a girls vs monsters sentai-inspired series) If you just want the aesthetics, there’s plenty of idol series like Aikatsu and PriPara which are still going strong. If you want a metaphorical story that feels MG even if the aesthetics aren’t, Wonder Egg Priority is very very good, as long as you look up the CW beforehand (suicide is the main theme). And then if you want magical girl type characters in a non magical girl series, well, I don’t think there’s any like that at this moment, but they crop up often enough, with varying results.
So uhh. Yep. There are the current and upcoming series. If I missed any, feel free to drop a line!

Regarding the new precure series controvery you mentioned in the ask, i agree, people jump the gun way to easily.
And thanks to this, I have become anxious and hesitant on watching this season. I'll only watch the transformations and the attacks; of course, they are a MUST.
Oh, well; guess I'll have to wait for the second seasons/cours of Mewkledreamy and Machikado Mazoku, and the newest Blue Reflection Ray.

breaking: local hater releases list of best anime 2019
I don’t think it was a particularly good year, and the top 5 is looking pretty thin. To put it positively, Fire Force, a very standard fightmens shounen elevated by great production, ALMOST made it on this list.
5. O maidens in your savage season
So here’s Mari Okada doing what she does best: Writing about herself. Out of all the #relatable anime that’s flying around these days, this one is uniquely, well, savage. Everyone’s a fucking disaster and the show doesn’t hold back on it either. Savage Maidens takes a genre that always tends towards the comfortable and makes it so real it borders on the surreal, and all without becoming dour. And it has an ending! Not a great one, to be honest, and the show in general gets less good as it goes on, but I’ll take what I can get.
4. Dororo
Instead of a modern shounen, how about a not modern shounen. What Dororo uniquely does well is having old-school sensibilities without being overtly retro, making it just an extremely competent update to a 60s Tezuka classic that still feels fresh today. Dororo is not particularly deep but with a few exceptions it’s always rock solid entertainment that simply lacks a lot of the lazy shortcuts this sort of story has grown over the last half century or so, and works for the payoff instead. It’s still not my favorite type of subject matter but I wouldn’t mind it being done this right more often.
P.S. OP1 rules OP2 drools, smash that like button if u agree
3. Run with the Wind
So various people are losing their shit over how great Stars Align is right now, but I’d rather look back on a show that does the whole thing far better and also doesn’t have an unintentionally hilarious ending. It could also have something to do that a marathon relay is pretty much the best possible sport for a show like this, because it’s both solo and team efforts playing well together without the need for constant tournament ladder plots (take note, Yuri on Ice). Run with the Wind is a stellar example of how to do a character drama masquerading as a sports show. Strong character writing, good pacing, going big without going stupid, competent production - this show delivers.
2. Senryuu Shoujo
No matter how weak a year is, you can always bet on getting enough cute at least. Honorable mentions go to Hitori Bocchi and Machikado Mazoku, which are both pretty good. Senryuu Shoujo is better though, because it’s more than just cute: It is extraordinarily cute. It is in fact so cute that it gets by by only adding a slight sprinkle of the funnies and cutting the runtime by half. It’s just so goddamn charming that it’s actually easy to forget that it’s ostensibly based around a pretty pedestrian gimmick, but that ends up feeling so natural that it somehow makes the show better. Sometimes you don’t need much more than Nanako making cute faces for 10 minutes a week.
1. Kaguya-sama: Love is War
You know, I hate anime comedy. Which is pretty interesting because I tend to like comedy in general. It’s just the specific ways that anime comedy operates that ticks me off almost every time. Well, imagine my surprise then that the best show of the year is indeed a real, no-buts-about-it comedy. Well, romantic comedy, I guess, but Kaguya-sama is still never not trying to be funny. There’s nothing worse than bad comedy, but Kaguya-sama indeed manages to be outrageously hilarious. I think it’s the way that its jokes tend to be big, constructed setpieces with actual progression instead of goofy faces and pratfalls. Add in to this a tendency to go full absurd with a direction to match, and you’ve got the best comedy at least since Nichijou (and I personally think it’s better than Nichijou anyway). And the characters are total goofballs, but still plenty strong enough to make me care about them - Chika alone would make the show worth watching. Second season’s coming, you guys. Can it win again in a year with possibly more actual competition?
ω. Miru Tights & Iya na Kao sare nagara Opantsu Misete Moraitai 2
But wait! Oh yeah, I went there. I think it’s safe to say that “throwaway shorts based on some fetish dude’s Pixiv account” is my new favorite genre, and it would have a 100% win rate too if Tawawa on Monday wasn’t so lame. Anyway, these just fucking deliver on their intentions and seem like they’re something someone actually wanted to make. I think I like Miru Tights a bit more, because it’s just this a very simple slice-of-life show that derives its spice from being sketchy as hell, almost puzzlingly so, and iyashikei shows need their spice to not become mindnumbingly dull. On the other hand, Iyapan 2 is the much more interesting show if you assume that it’s a tragicomic, absurdist, Beckett-like deconstruction of the human psyche - which it’s not actually trying to be, but you easily can read it that way if you’re a bad enough dude. Iyapan is a bold artistic statement that can stand on its own merits. Since they’re both shorts, I’m splitting the secretly best place among them.

Hey
You know how the entire first season (well, almost entire first season) of Machikado Mazoku was about Shamiko trying to beat Momo so she could get her blood and break a seal ? You know how Momo never let Shamiko take any of that blood and tried to take it back when Shamiko accidentally got some ? All because Momo’s magic depends on her blood and losing even a few drops makes her a lot weaker ?
Well, guess how fast all that flew out the window the second Shamiko was in trouble.
