Sept. 2023 Apple iPhone Event
This year we are expecting the biggest change of all to be the transition from the Lightning port to USB-C ports on all iPhones and some iPhone accessories. The Pro models will see thinner bezels, a titanium frame, and the replacement of the mute switch for a new action button.
Let’s get started!!
Starters
Starting off with a typical video showcasing how Apple’s hardware improves lives, health and people’s connection to each other
Showing actual stories of people who’s lives have been saved by Apple Watch and iPhone features
Bets they show the people saved by the satellite feature during the Maui fires?
And right over to Tim Cook who confirms this event will revolve around iPhone and Apple Watch
Oh but first we’re starting with…
The Mac?
Recapping the introduction of 15" MacBook Air and Mac Pro earlier this year
macOS Sonoma launching on 9/26
Oh also mentioning the Vision Pro which still doesn’t have a launch date other than early next year
And that’s it I guess for Mac? Random.
Apple Watch
OH ITS pink
Oh HAND GESTURES TO CONTROL IT
SERIES 9
New S9 chip with faster CPU and GPU (this is the first actual big chip upgrade for the Watch since the Series 6)
Still sticking to 18 hours of battery life
Siri now processes requests on the Watch instead of relying on the Phone
Siri can also reference your health data for you on the Watch. Think “Siri, how long did I sleep last night?”
(Also reminder that Apple is removing the “hey” in “hey, siri”)
Watch can now more precisely tell you where your iPhone is using a new ultra wide band chip
Media suggestions pop up on the Watch when you approach a Homepod
Display is 2x as bright as the Series 8 and can get even darker for when you’re in environments like a theater
Double Tap
Series 9 can now recognize hand gestures to control the watch
Double-Tap controls the main button in apps. You can double tap your fingers together to answer or end a call. Scroll through widgets. Snooze an alarm.
It sounds like a small feature but actually expands the amount of time you can use the watch exponentially
Double-tap available next month
Series 9 Aluminum available in Pink, Starlight, Midnight, Silver and Product Red
Stainless Steel available in Gold, Silver, and Grahite
Starts at $399 for Aluminum model
Pre-Order starts Today, Available on 9/22
Environmentality
Environmental goals updatge. Starting with a cute video of Mother nature, played by the wonderful Octavia Spencer, visiting Apple Park and everyone (including Tim Cook) being very nervous.
Apple states they’re eliminating all plastic in their packaging by the end of next year.
No more leather in iPhone cases
Operating on 100% clean electricity in offices, data centers and stores
Y’all should watch this video once its uploaded just because the acting by Octavia is hilarious (2030 Status | Mother Nature | Apple - YouTube)
Net zero climate impact from Apple by 2030
Tim Cook and Octavia Spencer staring each other down for 30 seconds was not on my bingo card for today
Sport Loop is now 80% recycled materials
Apple will match 100% expected energy use of Series 9 with investments in clean energy projects
Series 9 packaging is 100& fiber based and smaller packaging so they can ship more with less effort
Claiming the Series 9 is apple’s first “carbon neutral” product
Apple no longer using leather in ANY of their products, starting today
New material called FineWoven that feels “suede-like”
Even Hermes is launching new environmentally friendly bands
Apple Watch Ultra 2
Also getting Double Tap feature
Display now goes up to 3000 nits, 1000 more than the Series 9
Very minor improvements across the board for this one
I think they mainly just needed to add the new chip and call it a day
Ultra 2 is 95% recycled titanium
Ultra 2 starts at $799
Pre-Orders available today; Available 9/22
All new models are carbon neutral depending on what band you get
iPhone 15
Dynamic Island makes its debut on the base model
6.1 and 6.7” OLED displays
Display can go up to 1600 nits of brightness for HDR Photos and videos, or 2000 nits in direct sunlight
Available in pink, yellow, green, blue and black
Now has c urved aluminm edges instead of the sharp edges of the 13 & 14 models
Has “ceramic shield” which is tougher than any smartphone glass so its built to last longer
100% recycled cobalt in the battery
They haven’t shown the bottom yet… it’d be hilarious if they just don’t tell people about the change in charging port
iPhone 15 Camera
New camera is 48mp. This was previously limited to the pro models last year.
Depending on the mode, it will be adjusted to 24mp
Pixels also allow for a 2x telephoto optical zoom option with 12mp resolution
Portrait mode getting improved colors and better performance in low light
If the camera detects a person or animal, it’ll automatically capture the data for a portrait photo without you switching modes. You can choose to make the photo portrait later on.
You can also switch the portrait photos subject after the photo is taken
Improved Night Mode & Smart HDR as well
iPhone 15 is getting the A16 chip, the chip used in last year’s iPhone 14 Pro; but with only 2 cores instead of last year’s 4 for the Pro
Battery size increased from last year but no specifics
OH TIME TO TALK ABOUT “CONNECTIVITY”
2nd Gen Ultra Wideband chip so it can connect to other devices that are farther away and make it easier to find your friends in crowded places
Better noise cancellation on phone calls so your voice stands out
Emergency SOS Satellite now available in 16 countries
Now adding Roadside Assistance via Satellite, partnering with AAA; free for AAA members
TIME TO TALK CABLES hehehehehe
Confirmed: iPhone 15 has USB-C
Earpods and AirPods Pro 2 also updated with USB-C
Confirming FineWoven iPhone and AirTag cases going on sale now to replace Leather accessories
iPhone 15 starts at $799; 15 Plus starts at $899
Pre-Orders start Friday 9/15; Available on 9/22
iPhone 15 Pro
iPhone 15 Pro now made out of titanium and Action button also confirmed
Lol “the most pro iphone we’ve ever created”
Titanium means these are the lightest pro models ever
New countoured edges and thinnest borders of an iPhone
Dimensions of phone smaller with the same display sizes as the 14 Pro models
“Toughest glass based materials in the industry”
Available in white, black, blue and “natural”
New architecture inside makes the device more repairable
Action Button
Still ring/silent switch by default but you can reprogram it to do things like open the camera, turn on the flashlight, start voice memos, etc.
A17 Pro Chip
The first 3nm chip in the industry
First iphone with USB-C speeds of 10gbps
They can do ray tracing on a phone now…
Kinda crazy to me how they always talk about how good gaming is on a battery driven iphone chip and they’ve made absolutely zero push to make gaming a bigger feature of the Apple TV
iPhone 15 Pro Camera
Camera time babbbyyyyy
Bigger 48 MP sensor to enable better low light performance
“equivalent of 7 camera lenses in your pocket”
Reduced lens flare (finally)
You can now choose a default lens size, including 24 mm, 28 mm and 35 mm focal lengths
2x better low light performance
Nightmode and Smart HDR seeing big improvements
15 Pro Max now gets 5x optical zoom; regular 15 Pro still at 3x optical zoom
Periscope lens utilized for the first time in Pro Plus to achieve that better zoom
USB-C allows faster transfer speeds and the ability to shoot video directly to an external device
The 15 Pro can record spatial video that you can then view only on your Apple Vision Pro… lol
New 6TB and 12TB iCloud plans announced to store more high quality photos and videos (at $29.99 and $59.99 per month, respectively)
iPhone 15 Pro starts at $999 for 128gb
iPhone 15 Pro Max starts at $1199 for 256gb
Pre-Orders start on Friday; Available on 9/22
Takeaways
That's a wrap on this event and rumors are saying it was Apple's last one of the year! If they do have anything else in store (there's a possible iPad Air refresh in the works or more devices with USB-C) it'll most likely just be done via press release.
For those following the rumor mill, there wasn't much surprising in this event except for maybe some of the camera specs. But if you're reading this you probably heard it all for the first time.
So now the question is, is upgrading worth it?
If you have any of last year's phones or watches my answer is short and sweet: No.
If you have older devices, the answer gets murkier. The iPhone 13 line from 2021 still holds up well against this lineup, but chances are you're noticing your battery doesn't hold up as long as it used to. The watch upgrades this year could be significant too depending on how old your model is.
Also chances are, there are no features on the Pro models of the iPhone or the Watch Ultra that you need. If you want to save money, chances are you won't notice much of a difference other than slightly better battery and display. A normal iPhone 15 model will last you a few years if you take care of it
Personally, I will not follow my own advice and will be upgrading my phone. I do it every year so please don't think this is anything special. I'll be getting the iPhone Pro Max in Blue with the base 256gb storage.
The watch is less of a sure fire thing. I think people tend to believe that I upgrade all of my Apple products often but the reality is I only splurge on a phone upgrade every year. My Watch is a Series 5 from 2019, my iPad is a 2018 iPad Pro and my laptop is a 2012 15" Retina Macbook Pro.
Four year seems like a decent amount of time between upgrades though and my watch's battery doesn't last as long as it used to so we'll see. If I do upgrade, it'll be the smaller silver stainless steel model.
OK. I think that's all. Let me know what questions or comments you have. Interested to see everyone's thoughts this year!!

Should You Upgrade The MacBook Pro M4? Things to Consider
MacBook Pro M4
Beginning in late 2024, Apple intends to update the MacBook Pro with M4 CPUs. This guide compiles all of the information Apple has available regarding their MacBook Pro M4 plans.
The M4 Update
Apple did not anticipate changing the M4’s node from the M3, which was constructed using a novel 3-nanometer technology. Although TSMC, an Apple supplier, may release updates to increase its speed and efficiency, it will still be a 3-nanometer processor.
There are rumours that Apple’s forthcoming products will have new features related to artificial intelligence; thus, the M4 will concentrate on AI. Apple is reportedly looking to enhance the M4 (as well as the A18 CPUs for the iPhone) to feature an improved Neural Engine with “significantly” more cores in order to boost performance for AI functions.
The 16-core Neural Engine found in all M3 chips has not been expanded by Apple in a number of years.
Entry-Level MacBook Pro 14-Inch
Last year, Apple discontinued the 13-inch MacBook Pro with the M3 chip. New 14-inch MacBook Pros with three chip configurations have replaced it.
A regular M4 chip will be added to the $1,599 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M3 chip. Current M3 chips have 8-core CPUs and up to 10-core GPUs; M4 chips may be comparable.
Luxury 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros
The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips, more powerful versions of the speedier M4 chip, will be upgraded for “pro” users.
The M3 Pro gets up to a 12-core CPU and 18-core GPU, while the M3 Max gets 16-core and 40-core. Unknown CPU and GPU enhancements for the MacBook Pro M4 and M4 Max.
Alterations to the Design?
No rumors of a MacBook Pro design change yet, and they are not due. After switching to Apple silicon in 2021, Apple redesigned the MacBook Pro design. Apple has updated the MacBook in 2012, 2016, and 2021, so expect another update in 2025 or 2026.
The MacBook Pro’s internals may get the M-series update this year.
MacBook Pro M4 Release Date
The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro revamp is expected in late 2024 to early 2025, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro may get an M4 CPU in late 2024.
Like the M3 chip range, Apple might release the M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max variations all at once or over several months.
Since the M3 MacBook Pro launched in October 2023, a refresh in October 2024 would signify a year.
iPhone 15 Pro/Max
Apple’s premium iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max have the most fancy features and bells and whistles. For iPhone power users, Pro variants are available.
A $999 iPhone 15 Pro and $1,199 iPhone 15 Pro Max are available. Size, battery capacity, and 5x telephoto lens technology distinguish the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which have similar feature sets.
iPhone 15 Pro Max features a 6.7-inch display, whereas iPhone 15 Pro has 6.1. The two models have the identical appearance, however the chassis and edge curvature have been somewhat updated from the ones from the previous year.
A “Ceramic Shield” front cover that provides improved drop protection, a pill-shaped Dynamic Island that contains the front-facing camera technology and Face ID hardware, and edge-to-edge OLED screens with minimal bezels are all features that are shared by both iPhones. Despite having an all-glass body, Apple added a titanium frame this year. Better than stainless steel, titanium is lighter and stronger.
Phone conversations, timers, Face ID, Bluetooth connections, and more are displayed on the iPhone’s Dynamic Island. New colour options for the two iPhones include natural, blue, black, and white titanium. Other colour options include stainless steel.
This year, the A17 Pro chip is only found in the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, which are the only iPhones to use it. Both of these models are equipped with the chip. The A16 chip, which was formerly utilised in the iPhone 14 Pro variants, is now included in the model lineup of the ordinary iPhone 15. Apple’s A17 Pro is constructed on the company’s 3-nanometer node, which brings about significant gains in both performance and economy. The processor supports console-level gameplay with hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading and up to 20% faster GPU performance.
A 48-megapixel Main camera with better low-light performance, a Telephoto lens, and an Ultra Wide camera remain, but the Telephoto lens has been improved. Apple has implemented Tetraprism technology in the iPhone 15 Pro Max to facilitate a 5x optical zoom. 3x optical zoom is available on the smaller iPhone 15 Pro.
Apple’s MacBook Pro M4 Specs
There isn’t an official announcement from Apple regarding the M4 MacBook Pro yet, but based on leaks and rumors, here’s a table of what to expectSpecPossible DetailsRelease DateLikely late 2024 (base model 14-inch) or early 2025 (higher-end models)ChipM4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max variants (possibly)Screen Sizes14-inch and 16-inch (same as current M3 MacBook Pro)Other SpecsNo information on other specs like battery life, storage, or RAM upgrades yet
Note: The data used for this was obtained from sites such as MacRumors [macaRumors M4 Macbook Pro]. Given the lack of an official notification, specifics may vary.

15 reasons why you should upgrade to iPhone 15 Pro if you are using iPhone 12 Pro
The upgrades that iPhone 12 Pro users will get when they “upgrade” to iPhone 15 Pro
Usually, users will upgrade their smartphones after using them for 2–3 years. Therefore, many iPhone 12 Pro users may be interested in upgrading their models to iPhone 15 Pro at the end of this year. It is known that Apple usually adds more new features when releasing the next generation of iPhones. So what new features will iPhone 12 Pro users experience when they upgrade? Let’s refer to the article below.
A17 Bionic on iPhone 15 Pro is more powerful than A14 Bionic
According to rumors leaked in recent times, Apple will equip the iPhone 15 Pro line with a new processor called A17 Bonic with better performance. Through the results of performance tests. Then the A17 Bonic chip was faster by up to 36% compared to the A14 Bonic chip on the iPhone 12 Pro. Therefore, users who upgrade will definitely be able to clearly feel the difference in this power.
USB-C charging port instead of traditional Lightning port
Rumors suggest that Apple will switch from Lightning port to USB-C port on new generation iPhones.
Specifically, users who upgrade to iPhone 15 Pro will experience Apple’s new USB-C charging port. It is known that this USB-C charging port will provide a more common charging standard. And allows faster data transfer speed than traditional Lightning charging port.
Titanium frame iPhone 15 Pro with thinner screen bezel
In addition to solid-state touch buttons. The iPhone 15 Pro models will feature a titanium frame design. Along with some other exclusive upgrades. This could be one of Apple’s biggest design changes. Changing the frame helps the body of the iPhone become lighter. And especially has higher durability than iPhone 12 Pro.
Compared to iPhone 12 Pro, 15 Pro is predicted to have many improvements in design. The most prominent is the ‘super scroll’ screen design with an ultra-thin bezel. iPhone 15 Pro is rumored to have a thin screen bezel of only 1.55 mm on the front. This makes it one of the thinnest bezel smartphones in the world.
Dynamic Island
Previously, Apple had replaced the notch with the Dynamic Island design on iPhone 14 Pro. And analysts also predict that iPhone 15 Pro will still keep this Dynamic Island design.
Specifically, this new iPhone series is expected to have a pill-shaped hole-punch that contains Face ID sensors and a round hole-punch to contain selfie camera. It is known that this feature allows users to quickly view notifications or control music player.
Screen with higher brightness
The screen of iPhone 15 Pro is expected to have a brightness level at maximum. It can be higher by up to 200 nits similar to the previous generation iPhone 14 Pro. Thanks to that, the smartphone will have better outdoor display capability than iPhone 12 Pro. At the same time, the device also brings users a better viewing experience.
Solid-state touch buttons
In addition, Apple is expected to remove physical buttons on iPhone. The iPhone 15 models will be equipped with solid-state touch buttons.
Replacing the physical power, volume and mute buttons. Unlike iPhone 12 Pro. iPhone 15 Pro will only have one common volume touch button instead of separate increase and decrease buttons.
It is known that these touch buttons will have the same function as trackpad on MacBook. It does not move physically but will connect to haptics of Taptic Engine to simulate the feeling of pressing by small vibrations.

Always On Display
Apple has introduced the Always-On Display feature when iPhone 14 Pro was launched.
According to predictions, the iPhone 15 Pro models in the future will still be equipped with this feature. This feature helps to dim the entire lock screen but still displays date, time, widgets, wallpapers and notifications.
However, when users touch the screen or press the power button on the side, the screen will return to normal.
Promotion on iPhone 15 Pro
This is one of the new upgrades on iPhone 15 Pro that previous iPhone 12 Pro models did not have. Promotion technology allows the screen to support refresh rate up to 120Hz. Users will have more vivid movie watching experiences, smoother web browsing or gaming with this technology.
iPhone 15 Pro with camera cluster with many new improvements
iPhone 12 Pro users who upgrade to generation 15 Pro will receive many cool upgrades on camera.
The camera cluster of iPhone 15 Pro will have many new improvements. Including a 48MP Wide lens rumored with a rear camera design that supports 8K video recording. Front camera integrated with many interesting features such as autofocus, optical zoom and iOS anti-shake technology, Macro shooting mode or Cinematic mode.
Emergency SOS via Globalstar satellite
Emergency SOS via Globalstar satellite allows users to send text messages to emergency services when the device is out of coverage area. This is one of the new features that iPhone 12 Pro users cannot experience. However, users will receive this free service for 2 years. From when activating the device when upgrading to iPhone 15 Pro.
Accident detection feature
Accident detection is one of the new features of the iPhone 14 line launched last year. This feature is designed to detect car accidents. And quickly contact rescue services via Emergency SOS if users do not respond. According to predictions, this feature will still be equipped on iPhone 15 Pro in the future
Wi-Fi 6E comes with 5G
Previous rumors suggested that Apple would switch to using 5G modems developed by Apple itself from 2023.
It is expected that the iPhone 15 models will be the first line to be equipped with Apple’s own 5G modem. To improve performance, compared to the Snapdragon X55 5G modem of iPhone 12 Pro. In addition, there are rumors that the models are also expected to be equipped with Wi-Fi 6E, a 6GHz band with faster speed, lower latency and less signal interference than standard Wi-Fi 6 on iPhone 12 Pro.
Battery life on iPhone 15 Pro
Recent rumors suggest that iPhone 15 Pro may be equipped with a larger capacity battery. With an energy-saving chipset, this new generation iPhone is expected to offer longer usage time. According to calculations, about twice as long as iPhone 12 Pro.
High RAM capacity option
iPhone 15 Pro is rumored to be equipped with 8GB of RAM. Higher than iPhone 12 Pro models. With this capacity level. Users will be able to open multiple applications in the background and store data comfortably.
iPhone 15 Pro with storage options up to 1TB
Unlike iPhone 12 Pro. iPhone 15 Pro will have more storage options, up to 1TB. With this storage capacity. Users can comfortably store data and download any application. This model will be a perfect choice for creators, photographers who often take photos and record videos on their phones.

You know what’s funny is whenever I make a tech post I get people going “this is blatantly untrue” and I get people going “this is really good information and everyone needs to know it” and the dividing line is how much time you spend with people who are tech literate.
Yep, I would tell my computer savvy friends where they could get keycaps and fix their keyboards; I don’t even have to bother telling my computer savvy friends how to run a fifteen year old laptop because we’re all pretty good at it.
But GODDAMN I just read a response to my “cheap computer season” post that claimed that it was totally reasonable to run a macbook from 2010 and
Look.
That’s not a reasonable thing to tell a student who needs a functional computer to do research and write papers. (have fun trying to find installation discs from when the OS was still named after cats and have fun trying to get a browser to get along with that OS)
You know why most people bring me laptops with missing keys? Because the key got ripped off by their two-year-old and damaged the soldering in the keyboard and I have no idea it’s going to be “oh, yeah, that’s a ten dollar fix” or “sorry, that’s going to be an hour and a half to disassemble and reassemble and we’ll have to order you a new keyboard specific to that model out of new old stock” and the thing is the second one is much, much, much more common in my experience than the first.
Do I think you need to replace a laptop when the bezel is cracked? No. I also don’t carry my laptop powered on in the bag with a flashdrive sticking out of the USB port. Customers do weird things that I don’t understand and when a customer tells me they want me to fix the bezel they think it’s a twenty-dollar snap-on repair because they have no idea how this works and then they get mad at me when I explain “no, you’ve gotta have this specific piece of plastic, these haven’t been made in five years, and you might be better off buying a used model online than trying to track down a new bezel.”
So here’s the thing: Can Macs get viruses?
There are three answers here.
“No, of course not, Macs are made to be virus-proof”
“Macs need antivirus protection because, while it is less common than infections for PCs, there are types of malware that can infect macs and it’s worthwhile to guard against that”
“tEcHnIcAlLy a virus has to be self-replicating and IOS’s file management system [or some other bullshit] prevents that so TECHNICALLY Macs can’t get viruses and what you need is anti-malware software if you need anything because you’re fairly likely to have security through obscurity”
I’m aware of the third position and voicing the second position to people who believe the first position.
YES TECHNICALLY YOU CAN KEEP A COMPUTER RUNNING INDEFINITELY AND YES IT’S TOTALLY POSSIBLE YOUR LAPTOP WILL LAST TEN YEARS.
“Well if you treat it right and run it well it’ll be in great shape for a long time”
YES THAT IS CORRECT DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MANY PEOPLE WHO DON’T WORK ON THEIR OWN CARS DRIVE AROUND WITH THE OIL CHANGE LIGHT ON FOR MONTHS?!?
Tons of people in the world today use computers. They use computers every day, they use computers at home and at school and at work.
Tons of people drive every day. They use cars for fun and for commuting and for their jobs.
That doesn’t mean that all (or even most, or even half) of the people using these things is any good at keeping them running, or even has the barest idea of how to start tracking down a problem.
Someone in the notes of that post described a green line on their screen and thought that was a symptom of hard drive problems. I don’t have the hours in the day to catch this person up to speed on why a display issue on a laptop isn’t indicative of hard drive issues.
Do you know how much people think it’s going to cost to get data off of a broken drive? Not “won’t power up” not “won’t spin” but “I dropped this and part fell off and now it won’t power up or spin and also the platter is chipped”? I’m going to have to send that shit to a clean room and the customer is *staggered* that it might cost more than a hundred dollars to get their data. “Outrageous, what kind of blackmail operation are you trying to run here, just plug it in and get my pictures.”
A year or so ago I was at Jiffy Lube (ew). I’d been shooting the shit with the mechanic when a parent and child rolled in in a panic. And they should have been panicking! They’d thrown a fucking rod because they’d been driving with no oil in the car for god knows how long because neither of them had had the oil changed in the two years they’d owned the vehicle.
*I* can keep a 30-year-old car running. I can put a belt back on an engine in a dark parking lot with a wrench and a headlamp. I can drop a gas tank and replace my fuel filter and thumb my nose at the mechanics who tried to upsell me on “replacing your old, worn-out air filter” the day after I’d popped a new one into my truck.
These folks couldn’t keep a new car running with three alarms telling them what was wrong.
*I* can power up my 2005 macbook running Leopard and use garage band to record a song or do some design work on my copy of Adobe CS3; I can kludge its FF3.5 browser into playing nice with the internet and accept that it’s going to be a slow piece of shit.
The lady who called me confused by the fact that the password to her email was different than the login information for her grocery store rewards account will not be able to function if she gets a pop-up that says she’s using an outdated browser and will think it’s a virus if her bank won’t let her log in on that browser.
And you know what, I’m kind of sick of this attitude.
I would *fucking adore it* if computers were actually easy to repair; I’d love it if you could run new OSs on old hardware (especially on macs because I think apple are kind of shitheads about planned obsolescence).
But you know what, no, most people *CAN’T* reasonably expect to use a ten-year-old computer and have pleasant experience of it. It’s going to run slow. It’s going to shut down when they don’t want it to. The battery is going to swell slightly with the heat and your touchpad is going to go nuts. Your USB ports will stop working. Standard wear and tear that most people don’t know how to protect against and don’t know how to repair is going to make it harder to use AND software requirements will outstrip the hardware capabilities of the computer.
If your old computer sucks it’s not your fault. If you can’t happily use a 10-year-old laptop to do your homework that’s okay, it wasn’t designed for you to use it that way and YOU SHOULDN’T FEEL GUILTY ABOUT IT.
Because that’s kind of what a lot of these “well anybody should realistically be able to run a laptop from 2010″ responses comes down to: if you need new hardware you’re just not doing it right. If you have to replace your computer you didn’t make good choices when you bought it. If your battery dies it’s because you didn’t take care of it.
No. No. No. No.
This shit is A) designed to fail and B) actually really hard to keep running (hey how many blown capacitors do you think someone has to have on their motherboard before you say it’s not their fault for wanting to replace the laptop)
ALSO SOMEONE IN THE RESPONSES OF THAT POST LITERALLY SAID THAT IF YOUR BATTERY DIED AT THREE YEARS IT WAS BECAUSE YOU WEREN’T DOING THE DRAIN CHARGE CYCLE RIGHT AND FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU. It’s discharge cycles and heat, motherfucker; they are going to fail at some point and people shouldn’t feel bad if their batteries stop working after a couple years.
UGH.
You shouldn’t have to be a mechanic. You shouldn’t have to be a computer technician. Yeah, your shit will last longer if you know how to take care of it but, fuck. Imagine you were still using internet speeds from 2010. Imagine all your devices still had USB 2.0. Imagine you couldn’t log onto your online bank because your hardware won’t run he software that your bank recognizes because the hardware manufacturer decided it won’t support the older hardware.
What I was trying to get across in that initial post was “computers fail, and they fail pretty frequently; your life will be better and you will save money if you plan on replacing them at a regular interval and have reasonable expectations in terms of cost and failure. So buy a cheap computer now because you’re probably going to need one at some point”
And now I’ve got to Do A Yell about how there’s no ethical consumption under capitalism and it’s unreasonable to expect tired, overworked, broke people to become experts in computer repair in order to do their homework or play the goose game.
FUCK THAT.
IT’S CHEAP COMPUTER SEASON MOTHERFUCKERS. LAPTOP FAILURE RATES INCREASE AT THREE TO FIVE YEARS AND DESKTOP FAILURE RATES INCREASE AT FIVE TO SEVEN YEARS. RIGHT NOW THERE ARE DISCOUNTS ON NEW COMPUTERS AND IT’S CHEAP TO GET AN EXTENDED WARRANTY.
LIVE LONG AND PROSPER AND WORK ON COMPUTERS IF YOU WANNA AND PLAN TO REPLACE REGULARLY IF YOU DON’T WANT TO WORK ON COMPUTERS.
ALSO CHANGE YOUR FUCKING OIL YOU’RE PROBABLY DUE.

The floppy drive
I was worried about the challenges this floppy drive would bring:
It has the rarer 26 pin connector which also delivers power.
No front bezel and the eject button is also very slim and bevelled (so it is more streamline with the case).
So a GOTEK probably won’t fit or will ruin the aesthetic.
Swapping over for a different floppy drive also probably won’t fit.
The drive belts are known to perish in to pieces.
Google searches for this Citizen U1DA-38A results in 0 results.
Upon visual inspection it seems ok. Maybe the drive belt is a little slack, but let’s see how it goes.
I don’t have any disks I can test this on except one that is failing to read. Hopefully it is a dud disk. Waiting on a USB floppy drive (for my modern MacBook) to arrive in the post so I can confirm that before I start dismantling the drive further.
My backup plan is to buy a newer Citizen floppy (hoping the eject button will be transferable) and using an adaptor to get to the 34 pin standard. My only concern then would be that if Amstrad continued with their CPC legacy and used the PIN-34 ready signal which most PC floppy drives dispensed with, although on some drives you get a jumper or solder bridge for that option.
Another option would be to rig up a GOTEK via a pin adaptor, do all my transfers whilst the case is open, then disconnect it.
This guy on YouTube is changing the drive belt in another similar Citizen U1DA drive. He claims the drive belt change was successful, although he messed up the head alignment in the process which made the drive useless:
Citizen Floppy Drive Belt Replacement DIY Guide
... he also conveniently doesn't tell us what size belt he used. But other sources and the eBay seller he references leads me to: 71mm x 0.6mm x 2.8mm and eBay seller modern-radio-bolton

A Detailed Guide Ob Best Laptop For Travel And Work.
After much criticism, Apple ditched the troublesome butterfly switch mechanism that's been present on its laptops since 2015 with the launch of its new MacBook Pro — the largest laptop Apple has built since it launched the now-discontinued 17-inch MacBook Pro in 2011.
The decision to implement a scissor-switch design in the new best laptop for work and travel which is MacBook Pro's keyboard instead of the butterfly switch comes after customers and critics alike reported issues with the keyboard. Some said that keys would respond twice when only tapped once, others said that keys simply wouldn't respond at all.
Apple has since launched a service program that allows customers with affected keyboards to get their laptop repaired for free. But the 16-inch MacBook Pro represents the company's first major shift away from the butterfly keyboard since it launched around four years ago.
The new MacBook Pro's larger display also makes it a more practical device for those who prioritize productivity but don't have the space for a desktop computer. By reducing the size of the bezels that frame the laptop's screen, Apple has enlarged the display without actually making the computer all that much bigger than its 15-inch predecessor. All the best working laptop is here so why pay more to anyone else.
Otherwise, the MacBook Pro brings all the advantages and disadvantages you'd normally expect from a MacBook Pro. That's to say it offers fast performance, a high-resolution screen, a sleek design that never seems to overheat, and boisterous audio. Now that the butterfly keyboard has been replaced with a new one inspired by the company's popular Magic keyboard, I can add a high-quality typing experience to that list as well.
But it also retains two of the complaints I've had about Apple laptops in years past: it's expensive and doesn't offer as much flexibility as competing Windows machines. While most high-end Windows laptops of the same price have the option to configure it with a touch screen, Apple has never offered this choice.

Vidia geforce g105m + intel gma 950
The laptop would feel more sturdy if they had done so. The screen hinges are made from shiny black plastic, and I would have appreciated it had HP made it from metal. As with the previous generation of HP Pavilions, nothing actually holds the screen lid down when you shut it there seems to be some magnetic attraction that allows the lid to snap shut. The finish makes this laptop feel more expensive than it actually is. It really feels sturdy and is quite nice. The palmrest and areas surrounding the keyboard are also made out of BRUSHED ALUMINUM. Because of the material, the case has virtually no flex. Of course, HP has its logo stuck on it’s laptop. If you already put one on the box, you don’t need another one on the case itself. The top part is entirely metal (BRUSHED ALUMINUM), but HP chooses to attach an Energy Star sticker to it, which really is quite tacky. This part is perhaps the cheapest part of the laptop, but whatever. The bezel of the screen is quite thin, and the screen itself is surrounded by shiny black plastic. I think HP calls this the Modern Argento or something like that. The dm3t, as I have emphasized before, features a brushed aluminum design.
The laptop was built after 5 business days (8 days including weekends) and took a total of 4 days to ship from HP’s laptop factory in Shanghai to the North Campus of the University of Michigan.īuild and Design, including ports and keyboard/touchpad The total came out to be $1,000 with free shipping.
Wireless 802.11a/b/g/n Card with Bluetooth (Dual Band).
13.3" diagonal High-Definition LED BrightView Display (1366x768).
Intel 160GB Solid State Memory Module (model number SSDSA2MH160G1HP, X25-M).
4GB DDR3 RAM at 1066 MHz (2x2GB modules).
Intel Core 2 Duo SP9300 processor with 512MB nVidia GeForce G105M + Intel GMA 4500 MHD (Intel Hybrid Graphics Technology).
In total, the call lasted for no more than 10 minutes and my order was placed. The rep was efficient, as he did not attempt to persuade me to add on options like warranty, and was courteous and accomodating-in fact, to the degree that he applied the $350 coupon even after it expired! Bravo, HP. My call was almost immediately received by a human sales rep (after going through an automated system) based out of the United States, which is really impressive considering the current trend of outsourcing. Why not? At this point I had nothing to lose but something to gain. Unfortunately, the coupon expired, so I instinctively picked up the phone and called HP. I weighed my options and, at the last minute, changed my config to have the upgraded processor. Unfortunately, I couldn’t really decide between having an extra 2GB of RAM upgrade and an Intel processor upgrade from the C2D SU7300 to the C2D SP9300. I had found a $350 stackable coupon, and since I’m a student with a tight budget, I was more than ready to order my laptop. More on that later.Įarlier this year, HP offered a multitude of stackable coupons, so I ordered online from HP Home and Home Office Store. The aluminum finish really is outstanding. What really won me over from the Sony CW was the build quality of the dm3t. I visited a Best Buy to check out some of the laptops, and I can say that I was absolutely repulsed by the build quality of the Dells these days.
My options were the HP Pavilion dm3t and the Sony VAIO CW. I had shopped for a while to look for a new computer to replace my aging dv6000t from back in the Windows XP days. Borrowing from design cues from Apple’s Macbook Pro line, HP launched the dm3 in late October and the tm2 earlier this month, with designs that feature a brushed aluminum finish. In less than 2 years, HP unseated Dell as the undisputed leader in PC shipments and maintains that lead today.ģ years later, HP is back again (perhaps) to change the game. In 2006, in an ambitious bid to gain market share, HP launched a massive and hugely successful marketing campaign known as, “The Computer Is Personal Again,” and redesigned all of its laptops with the extremely popular high-gloss Imprint finish. Apple specialized in design, and still does, and the PC industry won over customers by wooing them with the best bargain available-features for the price charged-and almost always at the cost of a pedestrian design. Prior to 2006, there was a distinct difference between Apple and the PC industry.

But if you're using it for a few hours every day, you'll only have to recharge it on the third or fourth day. When I tried to work off of it in one sitting, it lasted around seven hours. It's in no way a laptop replacement, but you can do some work on it in brief stints. Apps go into a resizable windowed mode here, so it feels a bit more like a laptop.

If you want to get some work done, Lenovo's Productivity Mode kicks in when it detects a Bluetooth keyboard (or you can snag Lenovo's keyboard and kickstand cover combo for just $60). It's slim and portable, yet large enough to watch TV shows, and the quad speakers sound great. The 11-inch LCD screen looks sharp thanks to the 2K resolution, plus it gets really bright. The MediaTek Helio G90T chip inside is powerful enough that the P11 Plus rarely feels slow-even games like Dead Cells run well. You do get a 120-Hz screen refresh rate, two extra speakers, 5G, Face ID, and a lidar sensor, among other perks.Įvery time I boot up the Tab P11 Plus, I spend a few minutes trying to figure out exactly how Lenovo managed to make this tablet for under $300.

It has Mini-LED backlighting technology, which outputs a brighter display with better contrast, though the Pro has the same level of performance due to the M1 chip. The large screen makes it even better for drawing. ★ The ultimate iPad: The 12.9-inch 2021 iPad Pro ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends) is much more expensive at $1,099, but it's more feature-rich. There's no Face ID, but Touch ID is integrated into the power button. That also makes this one of the best tablets for sketching, as the laminated display offers a more natural drawing experience. This slate delivers slim bezels around the 10.9-inch screen, USB-C for charging, and supports the second-generation Apple Pencil ( Amazon), which magnetically attaches to the top and recharges wirelessly. You can play demanding games, edit batches of RAW photos, render 3D designs, and so much more, but you'll likely start to feel limited by the iPadOS operating system, which isn't as convenient to use for desktop-grade multitasking as a MacBook. It's powered by Apple's M1 processor, which makes this the most powerful tablet for the money. If you want a more modern-looking tablet, try Apple's iPad Air ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends). Note: Apple is expected to announce a new iPad, rumored to have a nicer screen and a USB-C port, in September.
#GET FRIENDLY FOR FACEBOOK FROM OTHER THAN APP STORE UPGRADE#
If you need a slate for sketching, upgrade to another iPad. There's a discernible space between your fingertip and the actual pixels, which makes using the iPad feel a little less natural than its siblings. It supports the first-gen Apple Pencil too, but this is the only iPad with a larger air gap between the glass and screen. The latter is especially true if you hook up Apple's Smart Keyboard (or a third-party alternative). You also get Apple's class-leading ecosystem of tablet-optimized apps, which truly make this a slate capable of entertainment and work. The camera will ensure you're always visible in the frame, handy if you're cooking and FaceTiming with mom. The best addition to the 2021 model is the 12-megapixel selfie camera with support for Center Stage. It's the only iPad with this design anymore, and the only one that comes with an audio jack. Sure, it looks like an iPad from five years ago, with thick borders around the screen and a classic home button (with Touch ID), but maybe that's what you want. The ninth-generation model ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends) uses the same A13 Bionic chip that powers the iPhone 11, which outclasses similarly priced slates. It's surprisingly hard to find another tablet that performs as smoothly as Apple's iPad. Subscriptions help fund the work we do every day. com and our print magazine (if you'd like). Microsoft wedge keyboard battery life
If there's any feature Microsoft really should have improved, it's the dinky 720p webcam - it's average and a bump up to 1080p or an upgraded sensor for our Zoom reality would have been appreciated. And the touchscreen is responsive, as is the Alcantara-covered tactile keyboard and smooth trackpad. The magnetic Surface Connect port is as useful as ever. The rest of the Surface Laptop 4 is copy and pasted from the Laptop 3, too. Do razor-thin bezels really matter at the end of the day? But if that bothers you, look into an HP Spectre x360 or Dell XPS 13 - they'll have you covered.
Do razor-thin bezels really matter at the end of the day? I'll take better CPU and graphics performance or longer battery life over slimmer bezels any day. It's still a sturdy clamshell, but four iterations in, it’s looking a little dated, especially the thicker bezels surrounding the bright and high-res 13.5-inch 3:2 PixelSense touchscreen. For four straight generations, Microsoft's stuck with a CNC'd aluminum wedge design. Same outfitįrom a design standpoint, the Surface Laptop 4 hasn't changed, unless you count the new Ice Blue color. What I can say is that the version I've been testing is very good -again, not M1 MacBook Pro good - but by far still my favorite thin-and-light Windows laptop. I know, it's confusing, and I hate that Microsoft has made it harder for consumers to choose. Which version do you pick? It comes down to this: AMD is for most people doing basic computing things (web browsing, watching movies, working with documents, and light photo and video editing) and Intel is for that extra power. I've been using the $1,699.99 version with Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage.Īs you can see, there's a split between AMD and Intel (11th-gen) processors. The Surface Laptop 4 starts at $999.99, which comes with an AMD Ryzen 5 4680U chip, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. Microsoft doesn't rock the boat in any way. (Unless you're gaming on your laptop in which case it goes without saying that you should get something beefier with a discrete GPU). Like its predecessor, it remains the Windows laptop I recommend to anyone shopping for a new device. (If none of the ones above jump out, then clearly the Laptop 4 isn’t for you). Intel performance is good, but not M1 good, and battery life is solid, but not Apple god level.īut even without a chip that rivals the M1, the Surface Laptop 4 is a robust laptop with plenty of features to like.
The Surface Laptop 4 can't match either spec. The M1 MacBook Pro has none of these features.Īpple's M1 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro upped the ante with class-leading battery life and performance. It has a proper row of function / media keys instead of a Touch Bar.
There's an M2 SSD that's easily user-replaceable. I can login just by looking at the screen. It has a touchscreen with Surface Pen support, a magnetic port for charging, a USB-C and a USB-A port. The best thing about the Surface Laptop 4 is that it's not a MacBook.
