"LOOKING BACK, THE LEWD WAS PROBABLY THE FIRST HARDCORE BAND IN SAN FRANCISCO..."

NO IDOLS: "What were some of the first bands in the area you would consider Hardcore?" 

JAKE SMITH (CRUCIFIX guitarist): "Looking back, THE LEWD was probably the first hardcore band in San Francisco that I was aware of. Stylistically anyways. They were from Seattle originally. At a certain point, certain bands, both older (DEAD KENNEDYS, NO ALTERNATIVE, FLIPPER) and newer, came to be associated with the term Hardcore. Dead Kennedys were just "punk" before they were Hardcore. They were really more of a surf punk band the way Ray and Klaus play. D.H. Peligro was the hardcore guy in that band. But then a new crop of bands came up. So you had FANG from Berkeley, DEADLY REIGN from Orinda(!), FREE BEER from Concord. RIBZY from San Jose. LOS OLVIDADOS. Just a bunch of great, young, teenage bands. SOCIAL UNREST. BAD POSTURE."

NO IDOLS: "What attracted you to the Hardcore thing in the early 80s? And on the other side, what made people dislike the Hardcore thing coming around?"

JAKE SMITH: "It was partly the generational thing, wanting to be a part of something that was more "ours" and not already played out. And the bands spoke more to our concerns. Many of the older people in the scene didn't appreciate a bunch of drunk 14 yr olds puking in the alley or whatever. There's no question hardcore had less musicality, was rawer, and more emotional. "Punk" was for someone in their 20s, in college, studying art. "Hardcore" was for pissed-off teenagers."

HAPPY HEAVENLY BIRTHDAY to the legendary Nico: Actress, model, musician, and singer-songwriter. Born in Germany as Christa Päffgen, her career is well documented—from being cast in Fellini’s LA DOLCE VITA and singing on the landmark first Velvet Underground album, then embarking on a long career as a Teutonic chanteuse. Her reputation as “Andy Warhol’s eye candy” couldn’t limit her as she went on to create music with a compelling future-primitive goth-folk quality—eerie and gauzy yet somehow endearing. Her best-known albums were produced by John Cale and Eno, but her 80s recordings are well-worth seeking out as well. She died suddenly and tragically at age 49 after a bicycle accident. 

In late 1978 she performed a series of shows at Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco. It was just her voice and her harmonium— an enigmatic set considering The Mab mostly staged rowdy punk/New Wave bands. I met her briefly, recorded her shows for my own enjoyment, then uploaded them on reel-to-reel tapes. A few years later I loaned the tapes to an associate who never returned them. Many years after that, my recordings mysteriously appeared on a French bootleg series. Those tapes got a lot of mileage. HB Nico and thank you for your spirit. SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO “She’s Not Some Animal”—An Urban Beauty & The Beast Story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSVaTWkXpb4 The lyrics combine street-wise romanticisms and observations from when I was working as a bicycle messenger on the streets of San Francisco. When I wrote this “old fashioned love song” I was dosing heavily on Beach Boys, 60s British Invasion, and late 70s New Wave. On a cosmic jukebox it would play next to Badfinger, “Marcella” (Beach Boys), early Elvis Costello, and klassik Kinks. This track went through 3 studios before I finally got a proper mix from Rusty Richards (who’d mixed for Brian Wilson and Julie Miller). I made this video in 2023 with my Babe and Soulmate Uma Robin Mackey as “the star.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSVaTWkXpb4

When I wrote this “old fashioned love song” I was dosing heavily on 60s British Invasion and 70s New Wave. On a cosmic jukebox it would play next to Badfinger, “Marcella” (Beach Boys), early Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, and klassik Kinks.

The track went through multiple takes (there’s another nifty punk-speed demo version made in Florida with drummer Mark Jones, once lost in the New Wave Twilight Zone). This take was final-mixed by Rusty Richards, a Grammy-winning engineer who worked with Brian Wilson and Julie Miller. Thanks to everyone who keeps requesting this tune.
