this is exactly how i got into supernatural. My ma was watching it on netflix in 2011 and got to season 2 before i stopped and went to see wtf she was watching.
I was trying to write my second book but i kept hearing awesome lines in the livingroom. What made me finally close the laptop and come out to watch was when Sam said "Ive got demon blood in me Dean. Im a whole new level of freak."
I started the series from the start but ma wouldnt wait up for me , she kept on truckin, so i had to binge watch faster when she wasnt home lol. Finally she started rewatching the episodes with me and let me catch up so we could watch together.
Been a huge fan ever since and we got half our family addicted to it too. I loaned out my dvds so much i bought a second set of each season so we all could rewatch them simultaneously in diff houses. I couldnt wait for them to finish disk 4 and they hasseled me for disk 5. We got some serious use out of them.
Ma and i literally watched the first like 9 seasons 16 times each and then about 5 times after that per ep. Everytime we finished the show we started back at the first season ep one.
Personally, i stopped rewatching since the finale. Mad how they ended it but also wanting to forget it. Never left the fandom. But they let us down with the finale. (Wheres Cas?!?!) 4 yrs later i started it over again and im back up to season 2 in less than a week. Onto disk 2!

do you have any recs for shows / movies that u like? i wanna binge watch some stuff once 2023 comes
bestie i've had this ask in my inbox for 3 days because i have no idea what to recommend. like because usually if i rec something it'd be based on someone's preferences but i have no idea who you are nor did you specify a genre. and my movie taste can be kinda controversial at times. there's some movies i see mentioned on tumblr all the time that seem universally loved that i either didn't particularly like or straight up hated (see the vvitch. i hated that fucking movie).
i love vampire movies and so for vamps i'd rec:
only lovers left alive
byzantium
thirst
but then those are my faves because they all have a very similar vibe, whereas someone else might prefer a vampire movie like the lost boys (which i liked don't get me wrong, i'm just really into that very specific slow & quiet vibe of those three movies and how they all have their own take on vampirism). a lot of people also like let the right one in but i fuckin hated that movie. like i straight up felt gross at the end despite it also being a slow & quiet movie. like i get what they were going for but some Choices were made. i haven't watched the american remake because like. there was no fucking need for an american remake.
same with gay movies, i hated call me by your name. i went to see it at the cinema with a then-friend who, you'll never guess it, is a cishet girl, and who predatory-lesbian-trope'd me irl when i told her i was bi because we went out together a lot. she was like i just wanna make it clear we're not dating. and i was like yeah that would require like. stated intent and consent we're literally just hanging out. she also gave me the "we're all a little bit bi" and absolutely clowned on me once for going non-verbal which is what made me break off the friendship. and like this is the target audience for call me by your name in my head. certainly not me. anyway moving on. my favourite gay movies off the top of my head are quand on a 17 ans and j'ai tué ma mère
more broadly, some all time faves in no particular order:
stoker
mad max fury road (i tried watching the first three ones i really did)
the green knight
the old guard
the ritual
predestination (my trans ass was like YOU CAN DO THAT???? also it blew my fucking mind in general)
the lords of salem (it sucks but also not at the same time. idk how to describe it otherwise)
daybreakers (another vampire movie. i remember really liking it when i first watched it but it's been years)
28 days later
also if you're a hannibal fan i recommend manhunter which is the first adaptation of red dragon. it's insane and it's another one of those movies that sucks and doesn't suck at the same time. will graham is so so so slutty & dark'n'brooding. they changed the ending of the novel to make him seem cooler. they yassified his scars. his scenes with hannibal are also gay. there's a scene where he runs off after speaking with hannibal and he just sprints all the way out of the bshci with this insane music & shaky camera and i think there was even a weird effect once he was outside. he smokes and bitches and talks to himself in public. please. please everyone watch manhunter

Steve doesn’t have too many hobbies. This came as a result of being sick all the damn time during his younger years at the height of the Depression. He was always in bed, and he never really knew when he was just going to keel over and kick the bucket.
Art, though, is something he’s taken with him from younger self to his Captain America days. Especially in this modern age, there’s so much more to sketch. Steve takes interest in the tiny things – glitter pens, microwaves, things that other people have taken for granted as ordinary parts of their lives. He didn’t have those in the Depression, but now he does.
It’s weird.
When he moved back into the Compound, he spent a lot of time outdoors. He wanted to talk to Tony, to apologize for his secrets, thank him for his work on the Accords, maybe clear the air a little, but Tony would just disappear into the lab where only he, Banner, Pepper, and the interns are allowed. So he just picked up the sketchbook Bucky bought him for his last birthday, some pencils, and a Dodgers hat, and went out to observe the city.
It took his fingers some time to figure out how to shade the way he did when they were slim, translucent things. They’re bulkier now, thicker and stronger, and if he isn’t careful, he sometimes snaps his pencils in half. But as the days go by, his fingers gain back some of the delicacy of touch that his younger, sicklier self had.
Art is how he can express himself, now. Even though Nat and Sam like to tease him (what is it that kids say now? Clown him? He thinks that’s it) for having a speech ready for every occasion, Steve finds himself tongue-tied a lot more often than he can admit. Art is how he finally confessed to Bucky – a simple portrait of his long-time best friend turned crush, done with the pencils he’d bought Steve for Christmas.
A lot of the Avengers deal in things that could be considered delicate – archery, knife-throwing, cooking – but only Nat really does any form of art. She dances ballet, but even that’s something very defined, very precise. It’s razor-sharp, the way she does it. And her art form carries a lot of bad memories for her, whereas Steve’s mostly brings back good times. The days where he felt good enough to go outside. The days before the war, when Bucky would bring him onto the fire escape of their shitty little apartment and they would just stare at the city in front of them.
Soft things and sharp things are very separate in Steve’s mind. Art is something soft. Something pretty, something beautiful, something nice. He hesitates to call fighting or sarcasm or weapons evil, exactly, but they aren’t very beautiful, either.
For this reason, he doesn’t understand, at first, how the two Stark interns ended up together. At first glance, they’re polar opposites – one a spitfire, the other always calm. Loud laughter and a cutthroat tongue coexisting with quiet words and a thoughtful mind.
It doesn’t make sense to him, until he walks in on a scene one day that almost makes his heart melt.
He’s on his way out of the Compound to go outside and maybe people watch. Sketch a bit. He has his pencils in one hand, sketchbook in the other, when the strumming of a guitar sounds from farther down the hall. Steve walks out to investigate.
Mark is sitting on the couch, guitar in hand. Steve briefly remembers Mark playing it before, but not too much. It’s beautiful, really, and he stops just at the end of the hall to listen for a bit. Mark’s hands strum the guitar in quiet chords. They’re delicate, Steve realizes – thin, lithe, graceful. Soft. Similar to his own when he was younger, just minus the boniness and sickly white tinge.
His eyes then focus on the girl sitting next to him, head leaning on Mark’s shoulder, typing with razor concentration on the laptop in front of her. Sharp, precise, focused.
But though Y/N’s eyes are steely, her body language is anything but. She leans into Mark with an undeniable softness, a pliability that lets her sink into the couch and his body. Mark, meanwhile, sits up, his back straight, though his hands move delicately over the strings of the guitar.
In this moment, Steve feels dumbstruck, almost. The interns combine sharp edges and rounded curves into something that, even to his eye, is truly beautiful. They’re not solely delicate and soft. They’re not solely refined and precise.
They’re both, jagged points fitting perfectly into smooth curves. And there’s beauty in that.
Quietly, he walks back to his own room, the image of the interns on the couch burned into his mind. His fingers start moving his pencils back and forth on a fresh page.
Neither of them will probably ever know, but they are the reason Steve now sees beauty in sharp edges and precision. Perhaps he still prefers the delicacy of sunsets or the gentle waving of leaves in the breeze, but he understands it, understands the way Y/N and Mark come together. He sketches more – one of Clint’s arrows stuck in a target, one of Sam’s wings slicing through a block of concrete, Natasha’s ballet.
There’s beauty in everything, Steve realizes. Not just aesthetics and pretty things.
He likes this point of view. He likes it a lot.
Smiling, he sketches some more.

ii.
Bucky Barnes has often showed his love through food. It was the way he knew his Ma loved him, even if her face was drawn in most of the time and she didn’t smile a whole lot. None of that mattered, not too much. Bucky knew he was loved in the way she scraped away from her own portions and put them onto his and Becca’s plates, in the way she would give them the best bits of bread and the meat on the few occasions they could afford it.
So when he found Steve, that was the way he showed his care. Showed his love. He shared his meager lunches with the sickly kid who had a penchant for art, bought him medicine and swiped apples for him. He cooked for Steve in their ratty apartment, made him something extra nice to cheer him up a bit when his mom died. And when Bucky went off to the war and couldn’t take care of Steve upfront anymore, he sent back his earnings with explicit instructions for Steve to eat as much as he could.
He wouldn’t say he’s really good at cooking, at least not at first. His meals on the front could barely be called meals – some bully beef, bread, and biscuits. He tried, sometimes, to make things look nicer, make them look more palatable. In the end, though, he gave up. There wasn’t any point.
Then Steve came, newly muscled and broad. He saved Bucky’s regiment and formed the Howling Commandos, and Bucky had someone to care for again. Someone to love. Because even though Steve was physically stronger, to Bucky, he was still the reckless kid from Brooklyn who kept getting up after he got knocked down. He needed someone to protect him.
So Bucky started cooking again, trying to put together edible meals from the few rations they had. He cooked not just for Steve, but for all the Commandos – Dugan, Morita, Jones, everyone. It was the best way he knew how to show he cared, something beyond slaps on the back and teasing jokes. He got better at cooking, at making food that wasn’t just edible but also tasted good.
Then he became Soldier.
After all those mind-numbing decades, he might have thought his cooking skills would have disappeared. Being a highly trained assassin who slept for long periods of time in a cryochamber after each mission didn’t usually leave much time for fucking around in a kitchen. But surprisingly, when the rogues went on the run and Bucky landed himself in various safe houses around the country, he found he could still work his way around a kitchen, even though his metal arm overheated sometimes. Wanda helped, then, using her telekinetic power to airlift things in and out of ovens. Slowly, his cooking skills improved. And when he made the old meals, better versions of the special things they sometimes ate during the depression, Steve would tear up. Because Bucky remembered.
Then he moved into the Avengers Compound.
Tony never really lashed out at him like he sometimes did to Steve. No, Bucky hadn’t hidden things on purpose from Tony. He knew what he had done as Soldier. But somehow, the silent, awkward treatment he got from Howard Stark’s son was worse than if he’d yelled at him.
So for the first few weeks, even though he was itching to cook something just to keep his hands busy, he couldn’t bring himself to enter the kitchen other than to get some snacks. Raisins, usually. Raisins are good. Bucky has no idea why Steve hates them so much. Or why Wanda calls him a grandmother for liking them.
Then Y/N comes into the picture.
Bucky’s been alone in cooking for so long that he’s almost forgotten that other people can express care in the form of food as well. None of the rogues can cook too well – Steve is terrible in the kitchen – and even during the war, he was the one who took care of the food.
So when he finds one of Tony’s interns in the kitchen, soup boiling on the stove, he’s almost blown away.
From his first impression, Y/N was snappy, quick-witted, and fast on her feet. That’s how she landed a black eye on Clint fucking Barton before Nat took her down with the thigh-hold. And yeah, now he knows she’s Silk, apparently, but her reaction time is scary.
That first impression changes the moment she smiles at Bucky and invites him to sit at the kitchen island. He comes in, a little scared (he feels like one of those characters in that game Wanda plays – Simps? Sims? Something like that), but she just laughs and tells him Mr. Stark won’t murder him for sitting in the kitchen. “I’ll give you some soup too, so you have an excuse to be here,” she grins.
Jokes like that don’t usually go over him that well (murder is a bit of a touchy subject, especially with regard to Tony), but the teasing glint in her eyes somehow gets him to relax. So he sits and listens while she talks.
As the soup boils, she explains that she’s making it for Mark, who has a slight headache. It’s samgyetang, a broth with chicken, garlic, rice, and ginseng. Her parents used to make it for him when he was sick and Aunt Mei had to work, and when they died, she took over the job.
Bucky listens mostly in silence, reforming his opinion on the abrasive girl he met a month ago. She’s less snappy now, and though she quips a little about how bad Mark is in the kitchen, she’s quieter. Softer, out of worry.
It hits him as she’s ladling the soup into bowls, one for her, one for Mark, one for Tony, and one for him. She’s expressing her love in a way that Bucky knows and understands – food. She loves Mark and she loves Tony, and though she probably doesn’t feel the same way towards him, she still cares. She cares enough to fill a bowl for him, to place it in front of him with a spoon and fork and not the chopsticks he isn’t accustomed to.
He almost cries, looking down at the bowl of hot soup. It’s nothing like the simple meals his Ma used to make for him and Becca, but the meaning is the same. “Thank you,” he says quietly.
“You’re welcome.” The smile on her face reminds him of Becca, and maybe what his Ma’s smile would have looked like if he remembered more of it.
The soup is delicious. Rich broth, tender meat, rice that melts in his mouth. For a moment, he forgets himself as he tells Y/N that she has to teach him how to make this. Then he snaps his mouth shut, afraid of having overstepped.
She just laughs in delight, promising that she will the next time she comes to the Compound. Then she traipses off with the other three bowls on a tray, reminding him that there’s more soup in the pot if he or anyone else is still hungry.
Bucky slowly eats the hot soup, savoring each bite on his tongue. He’s long expressed his care through meals of his own, but only now, decades after his Ma, has someone done the same for him.
It feels strange. But it feels good, to know that someone can understand him in this way. Even if that someone is an almost stranger.
(Later, she comes back out again with Mark, both of them talking quietly about something or the other. Bucky’s just come out of his room to find Steve, but he finds himself stopping for a moment just to see the worry in her eyes as she looks up at him, the love in Mark’s eyes as he kisses her cheek. In that moment, he knows – it is love. It’s true love, real love, even though the two are only in college. It’s the way he feels about Steve, and the way Steve feels about him. It’s something beautiful.)
He starts using the kitchen, at first while Y/N is in there, and then he starts venturing in on his own. With time, Tony starts coming in too, and accepts Bucky’s apologies in the form of soups and meals and desserts.
Y/N brings Mark into the kitchen too, eventually. Bucky worries at first that he’s intruding on time with her boyfriend, but he quickly realizes that isn’t the case. Somehow, the love between Tony’s interns isn’t something that isolates others, that forces people away. Instead, it’s something nourishing, something that brings him in and makes him feel comfortable and peaceful even as they bicker in the corner.
Through the kitchen, through Y/N’s loud laughter and later Mark’s petulant whining at how she clowns him too much when it comes to cooking, Bucky learns once again how it feels for someone to care for him in the language he knows.
The interns’ love is the kind that Bucky has always wanted, the one he hasn’t allowed himself to have. He loves Steve and Steve loves him, but Bucky’s always been terrified that something will tear him away from Steve again. So he’s kept his distance a bit, even though Steve keeps trying to pull him in.
But as he starts laughing with the interns as he and Y/N work on new recipes, Mark and eventually Steve acting as the taste testers, he allows himself to believe that he and Steve can have this love too.

iii.
Natasha’s spent her entire life reading people. She didn’t used to be so good at it, not in the Red Room (the knives Irina snuck into fights and the subsequent scars are proof of it), but she’s learned. She’s adapted. Reading people, she has learned, is a survival skill.
Most people she’s worked with wear masks. They don a smile, cordially shake hands and speak with pleasant words, but they don’t mean any of it. They’re always looking for something, whether that be power or wealth or whatnot. Natasha’s learned to figure out what that something is, very quickly.
She’s naturally suspicious of people. And though that might not be the nicest trait for someone to have, it keeps her safe. So she doesn’t care.
That’s why she keeps a close eye on the interns. It’s just for a bit, anyway. She’s curious how two teenagers got so close to Tony, even if they are Spiderman and Silk – after all, Tony has never been the warmest person to strangers.
But these kids, they’re so unapologetically honest (brutally so, sometimes, especially with Y/N). Natasha’s only caught them with little white lies, like who ate the last Oreo (that was Y/N) and that I’m not really injured, Ms. Romanoff, seriously (that was Mark). The only thing they’re really hiding from people is their alter egos as spider vigilantes, and that’s understandable. Natasha herself would really have liked to keep her Black Widow identity a secret, but, well, certain events made that impossible.
They’re honest in everything – their lives, which haven’t been the greatest, their studies, which are top-notch, and most importantly, their love. It takes a special type of courage to display their kind of love so freely, so openly, when they’re so close to the public eye. Sure, Tony’s gone to great lengths to keep the press away from them, but it demonstrates the trust they have in each other, to defend, to protect.
At first, Natasha doesn’t think it’s real. They have to be faking something. She’s seen too much of the world’s darkness to blindly believe their love is as deep as it appears to be. They’re so young. It doesn’t make sense.
Then the Stark gala rolls around.
Officially, it’s to welcome the rogue Avengers back to society. Unofficially, it’s a networking opportunity – people get to scope out new competition, maybe make some promises or some trades (or some bribes). Some people will get “poached” by other companies. Others will be doing the poaching themselves. Or losing employees to the poachers.
Natasha doesn’t particularly love this environment, but she does enjoy putting leering men in their places. So she’s going.
The interns are too, apparently. This will be their first time out in the open with reporters and journalists, and Tony’s been going nuts trying to make sure they won’t get harassed. Natasha knows this because FRIDAY sometimes bitches to her about her boss.
She wouldn’t worry too much. If someone gets too overbearing, she’s been teaching Y/N and Mark better self-defense. They’ll be fine.
It’s the night of the gala, and Natasha’s waiting around with the other rogues in the ballroom. A few people have approached, but nothing too terrible. In fact, as she holds a champagne flute between her fingers, she feels kind of bored. No one’s acting out yet.
Then the interns walk in.
The first thing Natasha registers is how they’re just looking at each other. To Mark, it’s like Y/N’s a piece of gold and glass, a star pulled down from the sky to rest in his hand. Meanwhile, Y/N looks at Mark like he hung the moon in the sky, plucked the stars from the galaxy and put them in her eyes.
Natasha won’t lie – Mark cuts a striking figure in the suit of Pepper’s choosing (because Tony is a fashion disaster, if left alone). Pepper’s stylist has put together Y/N’s look in a way that makes her literally shine. But the way they look at each other isn’t just admiration for each other’s beauty – it’s something much, much more.
Hm. She still doesn’t completely believe it, though, and as reporters start swarming into the ballroom, she loses sight of them anyway.
Several glasses of wine and champagne later, Natasha feels sufficiently loosened up to tolerate more human interaction than the minimum. She slips away from the rogues, indulges a politician or two in a dance, and eats all the hors d’oeuvres off of a platter. If anyone wants to point that out, they can get a six-inch heel to the face.
(Fights almost always break out at a Stark event. Either physical or verbal. Tony’s used to it. He probably wouldn’t care, especially if she was fighting some asshole like Ross.)
Somewhere in the pleasant slight muddiness that comes with her tipsy state, Natasha sees the interns again. Neither are twenty-one yet, so Tony’s forbidden them from imbibing any alcohol (and has probably told the servers not to give them any). Knowing them, though, Natasha expects Y/N will probably find a way to steal a glass of wine or something at some point.
But they’re not drinking now. They’re not eating, indulging reporters, or fending off over-curious business owners. They don’t look tired from the evening. They don’t even look bored, like Bucky does on the other side of the room.
Natasha watches them idly, fully ignoring the conversation that she’s supposed to be participating in. Dr. Phelps can talk to the Surgeon General. She’s not interested, especially when Mark drags Y/N, protesting, to the dance floor.
Really, Natasha would have thought Y/N would be the one dragging Mark there. She’s always been the more outgoing one, the more confident and mouthier one. But as Mark starts leading her in the figures of the slow dance, she can see why the roles have been switched.
Mark is a natural dancer, not the best Natasha’s seen, but good enough to not bump into anyone around him. Y/N, on the other hand, is barely above having two left feet.
It’s strange. Y/N has always had faster reflexes in training and is far lighter on her feet. But it’s not too weird. Yelena was always better at fighting than Natasha, after all, but Natasha was always better in ballet. She supposes this is something similar.
Dancing, to Natasha, has always been something precise, something sharp. In the Red Room, one leg an inch too low merited a slap on the backs of the thighs. But Mark, even though Y/N’s stepping on his toes every two seconds, is only smiling. There’s no sign of irritation on his face, just pure, utter adoration and awe as he looks into her embarrassed expression.
That’s when it hits her. She might not have believed it before, but this is the love she’s read about in story books. Plain and simple, intricate and complex. It’s just love. That’s it.
So it is possible, she muses over her latest glass of wine. It is possible to love someone so deeply that it doesn’t matter how they inconvenience you. It is possible to love someone so much that their faults just become things to love, not things to hate.
Y/N accidentally bumps into some important-looking man in a business suit who snaps something at her. She bites right back before turning to Mark again, the snark on her face melting into adoration.
Mark looks like he’s never been happier.
Natasha smiles, slipping away from her boring conversation with the excuse of needing more wine. She’s happy for the spiderlings.
Because if anyone in the world deserved this happiness, she thinks, it would be the two pure hearts stumbling gracelessly around the ballroom floor.

iv.
Wanda misses Pietro. But it doesn’t do anyone good to lie around missing someone, does it? So, true to herself, she takes the pain, buries it deep in her chest, and does what she believes is right – she follows the rogues.
Her sense of right and wrong has been askew, before. She will admit that. Blinded by her desire for revenge, she allowed Hydra to experiment on her. She ignored the dozens of other dying experiments, focused only on hers and Pietro’s survival. She sided with Ultron, wrought havoc in the world until she found his true plans.
But then she joined Stark.
Wanda may never admit it, but she thinks that was the single best choice of her life, aside from keeping Pietro alive with her for sixteen years. Her moral compass righted itself when she joined the Avengers, when Clint Barton took her aside in Sokovia and told her to choose – stay a child, or become a hero. Because she couldn’t be one or the other.
(A child who has seen war becomes an adult overnight, after all, no matter how young they are.)
Sure, Stark essentially imprisoning her in the Compound was a factor in her choice to join Cap. But she also remembered Sokovia, remembered the death and destruction of her home country, and knew how much more would have taken place had the Avengers not had free reign to do what they must. The Accords were drawn in a time of necessity, she knew. But they were too strict. Too harsh.
The world has made (relative) peace with the rogues, now. She’ll take it. Cap’s team has more or less earned their place again among society, after all, what with taking down most of the Hydra bases left in the world.
But she doesn’t feel comfortable in the Compound, not at first. Stark’s renovated it, made it look very different from the prison it used to be for her, but she still doesn’t harbor the kindest feelings towards the man. He’s changed – there’s no doubt about that. She believes he truly means to stay out of the weapons business that killed her parents and wrenched her life in the opposite direction. However, the fact still remains that he took it upon himself to decide what was best for her, without taking her opinion into account at all.
There isn’t much to do. There’s only so many times she can spar in the training room, even after meeting Dr. Strange (she’s very thankful for him, of course, but he’s also kind of mean even if he means well). Hydra didn’t neglect her schooling too much when it became clear she and Pietro were going to survive, and she’s smart, so Stark enrolls her in online college, just for a couple of years. “You can transfer to a physical college if you want, then,” he promises.
Online school is boring, though. She’s responsible, of course, but pre-recorded lectures suck and the homework is more or less a breeze.
And what is there to do during her non-busy hours besides curl up on her bed and try not to think of her deceased twin, her other half, her older brother by twelve minutes?
(By God, she wants to hear him say that to her one more time. Just once more.)
She knows Dr. Strange worries about her on the days she walks into his mansion on Bleecker Street, eyes downcast and face pale. She knows Clint sends her concerned looks when he visits with his kids. Stark even awkwardly mentions therapy, and though she brushes away the offer, a part of her wonders if she should’ve taken it.
Then the interns crash into her life. Literally.
She met them, briefly, that first time Stark forgot to inform the rogues of his interns and forgot to inform the interns that it was moving day, but the fight was a blur and then she was busy trying to get her life together for a couple of months, so she never got to meet them properly.
They meet properly when Mark trips over one of Morgan’s toys on the floor, sending his tray of foam coffee cups splattering to the floor. A spray of liquid lands on Wanda’s feet as she’s walking into the living room.
“Shit,” Y/N says eloquently. Then – “Mark, you idiot.”
“Sorry.” Mark hastily stands up, sending Wanda a very apologetic look. “Let me get a napkin or something. Burn cream?”
Wanda waves away the offer. “It wasn’t too hot,” she says. “Here, let me help.”
“No, no.” Y/N snatches the napkins from Mark before she can take them. “You’re the victim of Mark’s clumsiness, we can do the honors.”
Then she slips on a puddle of coffee and lands on her ass.
Mark starts snorting. Wanda doesn’t know if she should be calling for an ambulance or laughing.
A pained “I think I broke my ass,” rises from the floor.
Wanda settles for laughing and decides in that moment that she likes the interns very much.
It’s the right thing to do, she thinks, liking Mark and Y/N so much that she starts feeling like her life has a bit of meaning again.
(She’s never the third wheel – it’s always the three of them. Together.)
They run around Stark Tower, playing harmless pranks on the Avengers who can take it – not Bucky, not yet, and Natasha would probably hunt them down – but Clint and Steve are fair game. Y/N and Mark make her listen to their favorite songs, playing them until two a.m. on the nights they stay. With their help, she finishes her coursework even faster than she used to, but even though she’s got more free time now, there’s so much more to do. Read books, play games, go thrifting (and teach Y/N how to have a better fashion sense, Jesus). There’s so much, now.
There’s even more when Y/N and Mark slowly introduce her to their other friends. Haechan is a sarcastic piece of shit but Wanda loves him for it, while Jaemin’s a little quieter but definitely far more affectionate. Yeri is a beautiful specimen, out of this world (yeah, Wanda definitely has a crush on her), and Jihyo has the best sense of humor.
Wanda doesn’t know how she lived before she met the interns, really and truly. From them, she sees that her existence with Hydra was just that – existence. Not living. Even when threats hit New York and they all have to fight together, it’s still living. Because Wanda now has something to protect, to defend again.
(Privately, she admires them, wonders how such pure-hearted people could be friends with someone as broken as her. She admires that their first instinct is to protect, not to destroy. In battle, the spiderlings take the job of protecting the civilians, evacuating them, using their abilities to defend.
Wanda can’t. Her power is more destructive than protective, and many people balk at her ability to see into their minds. So she focuses on tearing down buildings, breaking apart killer robots, throwing aliens onto the ground and twisting them so they won’t be able to hurt anyone anymore.
Y/N and Mark are Avengers, though they sometimes joke that they’re not really true Avengers. Avengers work out the large-scale events, Y/N says. She and Mark just look out for the little guys. That’s how Spiderman and Silk got their start, after all, and even now, they haven’t left behind their day-to-day duties in Queens.
Wanda thinks that makes them truer Avengers than the rest of them. She and the others? They only destroy, sworn to protect Earth at all costs. But if Y/N and Mark weren’t there to protect the people? Well, Earth wouldn’t be Earth without the humans who populate it.)
The rest of the Avengers hate them. Sam relentlessly yells curses when another bucket tips over and douses him in freezing water. Clint groans when he finds his arrows covered in webbing (“I thought I hid them well this time!”). Dr. Strange loathes it when the interns come to pick Wanda up from training (“Put that down, Ms. Y/N, or so help me –”). Steve literally leaves the room whenever the three of them are together because he knows they won’t stop making references to his old Captain America PSAs (the day Y/N and Mark sat down to show Wanda all of them was the greatest day of her life).
Oh, but Wanda loves it. She loves the life that the interns have given her once again, the freedom to act her age and not so much older. With them, she learns to cope. She goes to therapy at their suggestion, citing the help they received with their own troubles. She gets better.
Sometimes, though, she feels guilty, that she’s enjoying life so much when Pietro is gone. She still has bad days where she lies on her bed, unblinking, thinking these thoughts, staring at her ceiling plastered with little glow-in-the-dark stars, wishing with her entire heart that her other half was still alive. And even on her good days, where she and Y/N and Mark and Haechan are fucking around at a coffee shop or something, she’ll look out at the sky and think, I wish you were here, Pietro.
But it’s okay. In the end, she knows that he’s there. Watching, listening, smiling down on his baby sister by twelve minutes.
(By God, she can still hear his voice saying that.)
And he’s happy for her.

v.
Tony, by nature, is a forgetful person. Or at least he likes to say so. It might just be the result of purposely forgetting too many family dinners or Stark events, to the point that he’s just become forgetful. And who can blame him for not wanting to see Howard Stark any more than he actually had to?
It’s not too bad when it comes to the science stuff. He’s got a pretty good head for remembering what needs to go where, whether or not DUM-E needs greasing again, and oh fuck, I need to put this thing in before that thing otherwise the house will explode. Sometimes there are minor accidents, but he doesn’t talk about those.
(His interns do. They’re terrible teenagers, those two, in particular Y/N. Mark’s a little nicer. But he loves them anyway, even though they give him gray hairs.)
But when it comes to people? Social situations? Telling other living human beings things?
Yeah, he’s not the best at that.
To be fair, he’s been making progress. Every single year he’s managed to remember that Pepper is deathly allergic to strawberries (he doesn’t need a repeat of that time he fucked up and brought them as an apology, which only made things worse). He remembers date nights, he remembers (more or less) when he has to attend a meeting about the Accords, he remembers when Pepper sets up dinners with him, Rhodey, and his interns’ families.
So he’s been doing better. And if he “forgets” one or two meetings with Fury or that nitwit Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross, no one gives him too much shit for it. It’s not like he’d care, anyway.
But sometimes he still forgets extremely crucial information, and the aftermath makes him suffer dearly for it. Like now. It’s been months since The Incident, and he already thinks he’d like to be six feet under.
Because ever since the newly pardoned no-longer-war-criminal Avengers moved into the Compound, Tony has had a permanent headache (not that he didn’t already have one, what with Morgan learning to walk, but now it’s worse) in the form of his interns mixing with the newly reinstated Avengers.
In all honesty, he should’ve known this would happen since the day he forgot to inform the new freeloaders that he had two new interns and consequently forgot to tell the interns that it was moving day for the former rogues. But since he was woefully shortsighted, the ensuing chaos resulted in a broken table, a knife in the wall, a chokehold, a thigh hold, a black eye, and an arrow embedded in a bookcase.
Well, the table needed replacing anyway. And the most important thing at the time was that somehow, amidst the chaos, Morgan didn’t wake up.
After that disastrous first meeting, though, they’re all getting along surprisingly well. Sam likes to rib on Y/N, who just snaps right back. Steve likes to draw while listening to Mark play guitar. Nat and Clint have taken it upon theirselves to teach them both more self-defense, Barnes sometimes cooks with Y/N (and the food is surprisingly good), and Wanda gets along with them like a house on fire, which results in far too many pranks and broken items around the Compound.
(It’s not even just the pranks. It’s the sheer chaos that the three young adults bring when they put their minds together. They yell the randomest shit even when they’re beating off attackers and it drives him and the others nuts.
Example A. After Wanda enrolled in the kids’ university, they had a chemistry test at some point and got called to battle immediately after.
“WANDA, WHAT DID YOU GET FOR QUESTION TWELVE?” Mark yells as he rounds up a group of civilians.
“298!” she screams back.
“WHAT THE FUCK?” Y/N pauses in webbing an alien to start yelling. “I GOT 312!”
Tony thinks his brain is going to explode. “Kids, please focus on the fight –”
“Y/N, DID YOU FORGET TO CONVERT CELSIUS TO KELVIN?”
There’s a beat of silence.
Then a loud “FUCK” sounds over the comms, and Tony isn’t kidding when all the Avengers wince or flinch at the pure chaotic rage exuding from Y/N’s person.
Scott Lang, who literally just came by for a visit, later asks Tony if it’s going to be like this when Cassie gets older. Tony just pats the poor man on the back and wishes him luck.)
It’s part of the spiderkids’ charms, Tony thinks. Despite their different personalities, they fit together like positive and negative, like two opposite poles. And in this, they drag other people into their bubble of laughter and joy. Like they did with him.
There’s been a lot of bad in Tony’s life – Howard, the party years, his parents’ deaths, all the death threats he’s gotten from others (and himself – that palladium wasn’t doing good things to his blood). But there’s also been a lot of good – Jarvis, Rhodey, Pepper, Badassium, the other Avengers, and the latest additions: his interns, and now Morgan.
There isn’t anything specific that Y/N and Mark do that make him feel good about life, he thinks. It’s just the way they fit together so well, the way they bring a sort of comfort to his own fucked up existence. It’s there in the way Mark will hold out a hand for a tool in the lab and Y/N will immediately hand the correct one over. It’s there in the way Y/N makes soup for Mark when he gets a headache. It’s there in the way they play with Morgan, two college students laughing and smiling with a babbling baby with sticky, messy hands.
Tony hasn’t always been able to recognize love. It took him a long while – his childhood didn’t have a lot of it, and what little he got was from either Maria, who was often cowed by Howard’s presence, or Jarvis. Rhodey was the first to introduce him to something other than distant familial care – love between friends. Then Happy came along. Finally, with Pepper, he found someone he wanted to wake up to every single day.
That’s how he zeroed in on his interns, the day he drove up to their little apartment and flipped their lives inside out. He was taking a break with Pepper, but he could recognize the aura between them. The way Y/N looked at Mark, the way Mark squeezed Y/N’s arm when she started getting agitated.
Tony knew, from the start, that these were two kids who had seen each other at their best and worst points in their short lives and had made the conscious decision to keep caring for each other, to keep loving each other. And from the biographies he’d pulled together when he first started searching them up, they had had a lot of bad points in their lives to see each other at.
He couldn’t believe they weren’t dating. It wasn’t possible. But at the time, that hadn’t been the point, so Tony had just assumed that they’d figured things out and finally gotten together sometime after Germany. They certainly looked it – even through the dark circles and stifled yawns and half-lidded eyes, they never strayed from one another.
Imagine his surprise when they told him months later that they were finally fucking dating.
Honestly, Tony thought he was going to have a fucking aneurysm, but he stayed himself. But after the panic attack (and the resulting scene where he nearly cried in front of his two high school interns, one of whom had just had said panic attack, what a fucking mess), he’d immediately gone off to Pepper to rant. When she kicked him out a half hour later, he went to Rhodey, who was much more obliging (mostly because he ignored Tony the whole time).
And as the years passed, as he watched them transition from awkward high school students to awkward college students, their friendship and love only grew into something more beautiful that Tony never actually thought he’d see. Two brilliant minds who stayed geared on kindness and love and protection even after years of heartbreak.
What more could Tony ever want to see?
(Well, Morgan growing up. That, he wants to see more than anything ever. But that’s beside the current point.)
Tony walks into the living room to his favorite interns sitting at the piano. Mark’s holding the guitar Tony got him for his nineteenth birthday after finding out his old one broke and Mei couldn’t afford to replace it. Y/N has her hands on the piano that Tony got her for her twentieth after she mentioned she used to play, but Johnny had to sell their keyboard when money got tight. Wanda’s flicking through her phone on the couch, Johnny’s trying to keep Mei from experimenting in the kitchen, while Clint plays with Morgan and Nathaniel in the background.
Despite this, Y/N looks at Mark like he’s the only person in the world, while he looks at her like she hung the stars in the sky. The living room is quiet, broken only by Morgan’s and Nathaniel’s babbling, but it could be silent for all his interns cared.
He just watches them with a smile on his face as they begin playing in tandem. Tony knows Y/N is primarily a classical pianist, while Mark likes to learn pop tunes on his guitar, but when they come together, it really is something beautiful. Neither are perfect players, but when they begin a song, it’s like everything else disappears, and only two things exist – the music and them. Even Morgan and Nathaniel stop babbling to listen.
Eventually, they’ll finish the piece. Maybe they’ll play another one together. Y/N might show off the latest Chopin she’s been working on, or Mark will play a song he’s just finished composing. They’ll look at each other with those dopey smiles and star-crossed eyes, and they’ll kiss.
Wanda and the kids will probably groan in mock disgust. Johnny and Mei will exchange smirks. His interns will just laugh it off, maybe start a tickle fight with the kids or a brawl with Wanda. There’ll be a lot of kicking and yelling and laughing, and then they’ll tire and raid the cabinets for snacks.
It’s Y/N and Mark’s world, Tony thinks, and the rest of them are just living in it. It’s a messy existence, and Tony knows his headache isn’t going to go away anytime soon. In the face of this chaotic peace, though, he can’t bring himself to care at all. He can only be grateful to be a part of it.
The love between his favorite interns brings people together. And as he watches them smile at each other across their instruments, listening to the music they make under their fingertips, Tony wouldn’t have it any other way.

hi :) i hope you're not too overwhelmed with all the TGM ship requests! may i request a top gun ship? please and thank you!!
pronouns: she/her
personality: i'm quiet and reserved when i don't really know people, but when i open up, i can be quite loud and enthusiastic. i love making the people i care about laugh. i'll even make it my mission when am with friends who are introverted and on the quieter side. i'd say i'm a bit of a nerd in a sense that i like to learn fun, useless, facts, but more importantly, i like to learn things to affect change. i was a poli sci major in undergrad and am currently in grad school pursing an MA (and possibly will pursue a PhD but who knows). i gotta say, i'm terrible at setting boundaries but i'm working on it. it's a problem bc i often feel the need to help my friends with stuff but it gets draining. totally a secret but when i'm alone, i absolutely do karaoke as if i'm a famous singer and will sometimes imagine what my life would be life if i was a celebrity (yikes that sounds shallow). and although embarrassing to admit, i sometimes imagine myself doing interviews with talk-show hosts lmaoo
interests: big marvel/mcu fan; avid NBA fan
hobbies: singing; guitar; piano; painting; embroidering; reading; writing; gardening
likes: staying home; enjoying food and drinks; watching TV shows and movies; quick-witted people; meaningful and vulnerable conversations
dislikes: bigots; clear injustices; close-minded people; camping (i'm very much a city gal)
pet peeves: having a know-it-all attitude and a my-way-or-the-highway attitude because damn is it frustrating to converse with someone like that; people who can't communicate because helloooo, i can't read your mind!
ideal date: nothing in particular, as long as i'm spending it with the right person (lol corny i know)
favourite music, colour, season: i think my music taste is all over the place, but i'd say i mostly listen to pop, R&B, hip hop, and jazz. my favourite colour, hands down, is yellow. and lastly, my favourite season is fall because are you kidding? when the leaves change colours, it's gorgeous.
~ 🐞 anon (i hope this emoji isn't already taken haha)
lmao i may be getting a smidgen overwhelmed with ship requests, but it's fine! thank you for asking for one though! also, you are such a cool person i love your vibes.
anyways, you and fanboy would be great for each other.
mickey isn't necessarily an outgoing person, but he isn't a complete introvert either. when you're struggling to set boundaries, he will definitely help you with them and remind you that you deserve a break from taking care of your friends and to focus on yourself for once too. i've mentioned this multiple times, but i definitely think mickey is an actual nerd and fanboy about things. you two would definitely geek out over marvel content or anything else you two are interested in. imagine going to whatever new marvel movie comes out in the theatres on the premier weekend! anyways, besides this, i can definitely imagine the both of you staying home one night, eating some kinda takeout food, having drinks, and a karaoke night singing to all kinds of songs since you two enjoy similar music genres.
#also you're the first emoji anon i've gotten! thank you for that#topgun#top gun maverick#mickey fanboy garcia#🐞 anon

Ghostbusters
I’ve read a lot of film books and they’ve taught me a few things about how film books should be written if they are to be taken seriously, and these are lessons that I feel are as useful in life: 1. Drop in random French phrases wherever possible so it looks like you’re quoting from the French film magazine Cahiers du Cinéma, because even if you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about, nobody will be able to tell; 2. When in doubt, start waffling on about Godard; 3. Never describe a film as your “favorite film.” This looks unprofessional and childish. Instead, claim—in ringing tones comme les écrivains de Cahiers du Cinéma—that it is the Greatest Film. Zut alors! Malheureusement, not all the French in the world could convince any- one that I am more interested in Godard than The Goonies, so that’s a non- starter. But I shall make use of one of these handy life lessons and state that the best, most brilliant, most extraordinary, the most deftly created piece of au- teur film work of all time is Ghostbusters. For pretty much most of my life, I’d assumed that this was a fact accepted by everybody: Ghostbusters is the greatest movie ever made. Sure, people tend to say random words like “Citizen Kane!” and “Vertigo!” when asked by Cahiers du Cinéma for their favorite film.
But I thought they did this just as, when asked who they’d like to have at their dream dinner party, they say, “Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela!” as opposed to who everybody would actually like, which is, obviously, Madonna and Bill Murray. Now, one could take my massive assumption that my tastes reflect those of everyone else on the planet two ways: 1. I have an ego the size of Asia coupled with a narcissist’s complex and incipient sociopathic tendencies; 2. Ghostbusters is so good that even if it’s not everyone’s FAVORITE movie, it is probably in their top ten and so whenever I mention my love of Ghostbusters people say, “Oh yeah, everyone loves Ghostbusters.” For the purposes of this chapter, we will go with option 2. I never thought of my Ghostbusters obsession—and it is, I fully admit, an obsession—as remarkable. If anything, I saw it as a perfectly natural response to a great work of art. Devoting an entire shelf to books and articles by or about the people involved, however tangentially, in the making of this movie? Com- mendable intellectual curiosity. Spending two hundred dollars on a book about Ghostbusters that came out the year the film was released, just because it finally explains why the character of Winston is squeezed out of the movie? Hey, that’s an investment piece! Refusing to go on a second date with someone be- cause they failed to recognize a completely random (and not, to be honest, wildly relevant) Ghostbusters quote over dinner?I Well, why waste time with losers? It wasn’t until I found myself awake at 2 a.m. at the age of thirty-three on a Tuesday scrolling through eBay in search of a rumored copy of Bill Mur- ray’s original Ghostbusters script, which obviously was not going to be on eBay, that I felt it might be time to look at what, precisely, was going on here and why, after all this time, Ghostbusters still feels so special, maybe even more spe- cial, to me. There is sentimentality, for sure, not exactly for my childhood but for the city of my childhood. Ghostbusters is as much a love letter to New York as any- thing by Woody Allen, and a less self-conscious one at that, showing New Yorkers reacting with relative normality to an invasion of the undead.II Many of the jokes in Ghostbusters stem from the idea that, ghosts aside, Manhattan it- self is an out-of-control Wild West place, a Gotham city where a man could collapse against the windows of the Tavern on the Green, the ritzy restaurant that used to be in Central Park, and the diners would simply ignore him. Trash is piled on the sidewalks and Checker cabs whizz around corners: this re- creation of New York, 1984—the New York of my childhood—is still how I think of the city, even though it has, for better or worse, changed a lot since then. Even the hilarious anachronisms give me a sentimental frisson: Louis being mocked for his love of vitamins and mineral water; Ray and Peter snarfing down cigarettes while toting nuclear reactors on their backs; Larry King in a cloud of cigarette smoke while chatting drily on the radio; the bad guy being the man from the Environmental Protection Agency. These all look particularly out of date in the Manhattan of today, and I can’t help but feel the city is a little poorer for it. But my absolute favorite New Yorky moment in the film is at the end, when a doorman brings Ecto1 round after the Ghostbusters have saved the world—or at least Central Park West—from destruction. Despite having battled a giant marshmallow man, Dan Aykroyd still has a couple of dollar bills in the pocket of his ghost uniform with which to tip the doorman. You cannot get more New York than that. But there is something else in Ghostbusters that makes me sentimental, something else that I love in it that doesn’t exist anymore. That is, its depiction of how a man should be. • • • Just in terms of sheer variety, one could do a lot worse than turn to eighties movies for lessons in how to be a man. When most people think of mas- culinity in eighties movies, they probably think of that strange genre that sprouted and bulged up in that decade like Popeye’s biceps after eating spinach, consisting of men who look like condoms stuffed with walnutsIII speaking their lines in confused accents and emphasizing random syllables, strongly suggesting they’d learned the words phonetically: Schwarzenegger, Lundgren, Stallone,IV and, toward the end of the decade, Van Damme. Chuck Norris, too, can be included here, despite his lack of walnutness, but he earns membership in this group with his similar lack of obvious acting talent and strong fondness for right-wing messages in his films.V But there is more to eighties men than that. For a start, there are the men who raise babies and children (Mr. Mom, Three Men and a Baby, Uncle Buck), which some feminist critics argued at the time was a backlash against femi- nism because the films seemed to mock the idea of feminized men. In fact, in retrospect, these films look more like movies awkwardly coming to grips with feminism (Tootsie, too, can be included here, with a man pre- tending to be a woman, and occasionally looking after a child, and becoming a better person for it). Mr. Mom (1983), in which Michael Keaton loses his job and looks after the kids while his wife works, is clearly none too sure what to make of this “feminist” thing: the movie’s message is that the swapping of traditional gender roles will probably destroy the marriage and almost certainly the house (somewhat dismayingly, the film was written by John Hughes). But by 1987, Three Men and a Baby was getting much more of a handle on things. The men (Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg, and Ted Danson) are unex- pectedly lumbered with a baby girl and, by the end of the film, very much want her to stay with them in their bachelor shag pad, even after the baby’s dippy English (foreigners—tchuh!) mother turns back up. It turns out that, unlike Mr. Mom, they are capable of looking after a baby without causing havoc to domestic appliances (men—amirite??). The men in Three Men and a Baby are
notably much less obnoxious than les mecs in the original French version, Trois Hommes et un Couffin, who have a pact never to let a woman stay more than one night in their flat and have a tendency to call the baby “a swine” when it has an accident on the sofa. Ahh, les Français—ils sont tres masculins, ooh la la!VI Which is not to say that the American version is without its anxieties. Three Men and a Baby goes to such lengths in order to reassure audiences of the übermasculinity of the three guys, despite their TERRIFYINGLY FEMINIZED baby-raising skills, that they become hilariously camp. Peak camp is reached, for me, when Selleck goes out jogging wearing little more than a tiny pair of shorts and an enormous mustache, and he picks up a sports magazine full of photos of muscled-up half-naked men. Now, if that isn’t the definition of throbbing heterosexual masculinity, I don’t know what is. Yes, the eighties were a different time and American movies in that era seemed to think that homosexual was merely Latin for “psycho killer or flouncy interior decorator.” But nonetheless, whenever I watch this movie (which is more often than I’m going to commit to print) I think it’s a shame the director (who was the late Leonard Nimoy, very pleasingly) didn’t just go with the obvi- ous option here and make the guys gay, living in a happy yuppie ménage à trois. After all, this would explain why three apparently very solvent guys in high- flying careersVII in their thirties would choose to share an apartment in mid- town Manhattan as opposed to getting their own American Psycho–style bach- elor pads. And for heaven’s sake, have you looked at that Broadway-themed mural Steve Guttenberg paints of the three of them in the atrium of their apart- ment? No amount of references from Selleck to his love of sport can obscure the fact he and his two friends are living in the campiest New York apartment north of Fourteenth Street. These guys—the actor! the architect! the car- toonist!—are basically the eighties yuppie version of the Village People. And let’s talk about that homoeroticism! Accidental homoeroticism is yet another one of the great joys of eighties movies, and it was the last decade that would be blessed with the pleasure because from the nineties onward, gay cul- ture and references would be too mainstream and recognizable to slip past studios unnoticed. The plethora of eighties buddy movies easily and frequently tip into acci- dental homoeroticism, with the female characters being explicitly excluded from pretty much the whole film and all sorts of intense emotion between the two male leads. Lethal Weapon is one example and an even more obvious one is Stakeout, in which Emilio Estevez and Richard Dreyfuss spend an entire movie living together in faux domesticity and, in the case of Estevez, voyeuris- tically spying on his male partner’s sexual encounters. The Lost Boys is the most blatantly homoerotic mainstream movie ever made for teenage boys. In this film, young Michael (charisma vortex Jason Patric) is initiated into the manly life of a new town by going into a cave with Kiefer Sutherland and his male buddies (none of whom seems the least bit interested in the fact that a half-naked Jami Gertz is wandering around drunk- enly in front of them) and drinking their body fluids. Sure, why not, right? Vam- pires are inherently homoerotic and the director Joel Schumacher (who later homoeroticized Batman—not difficult, admittedly—by sticking nipples on the batsuit) revels in the connection in this movie in a way Twilight later deter- minedly, somewhat dismayingly avoids. Michael does at some point have what looks like deeply unsatisfying sex with Jami Gertz, but the person he gazes at with the most intensity is young Jack Bauer. And I haven’t even mentioned that Michael’s little brother Sam (Corey Haim), who dresses like he’s trying out for Wham!, has a poster on the door of his closet of Rob Lowe lifting up his shirt. Because sure, why not, right?

Melvin Feller MA Discusses Advantages to Reading More Books
Melvin Feller MA Discusses Advantages to Reading More Books
According to Melvin Feller an Associated Press poll revealing that 1 in 4 adults read no books last year. Yes, that is 25% of the adults out there are reading zero books. This is sad. Melvin Feller knew intuitively that the number of books read each year had gone down to zero.
Melvin Feller then asked about the adults who are reading more than zero books a year. How many are they reading in all? One? Five? Actually, the same poll reveals the average adult reads only four books per year. Half of those people read less than four.
If you are one of the non-book readers who feels you “don’t need no stinking books”, here are Melvin Fellers great reasons to start the habit.
Reading is an active mental process – Unlike TV, books make you to use your brain. By reading, you think more and become smarter.
It is a fundamental skill builder - Every good course on the planet has a matching book to go with it. Why? Because books help clarify difficult subjects. Books provide information that goes deeper than just classroom discussion.
Improves your vocabulary – Remember in elementary school when you learned how to infer the meaning of one word by reading the context of the other words in the sentence? You get the same benefit from book reading. While reading books, especially challenging ones, you will find yourself exposed to many new words you would not be otherwise.
Gives you a glimpse into other cultures and places – What is your favorite vacation spot? I would bet you read a lot about that destination. The more information the better. Books can expand your horizons by letting you see what other cities and countries have to offer before you visit them.
Improves concentration and focus – As I pointed out before, reading books takes brainpower. It requires you to focus on what you are reading for long periods. Unlike magazines, Internet posts or e-Mails that might contain small chunks of information. Books tell the whole story. Since you must concentrate in order to read, like a muscle, you will get better at concentration.
Builds self-esteem – By reading more books, you become well informed and more of an expert on the topics you read about. This expertise translates into higher self-esteem. Since you are so well read, people look to you for answers. Your feelings about yourself can only get better.
Improves memory – Many studies show if you do not use your memory, you lose it. Crossword puzzles are an example of a word game that staves off Alzheimer’s. Reading, although not a game, helps you stretch your memory muscles in a similar way. Reading requires remembering details, facts and figures, and in literature, plot lines, themes and characters.
Improves your discipline – Obviously, if 1 in 4 people do not read one book per year, then there is a discipline issue. There are many causes for people not reading books, such as the “quips” of information you can get on the Internet. TV is also a major distracter. Making time to read is something we all know we should do, but who schedules book-reading time every day? Very few… That is why adding book reading to your daily schedule and sticking to it, improves discipline.
Learn anywhere – Books are portable. You can take them almost anywhere. As such, you can learn almost anywhere too.
Improves creativity – by reading more books and exposing yourself to new and more complete information, you will also be able to come up with more creative ideas. As a personal example, I read many, many books on real estate and every business subject. So often, when my clients are stumped with a problem, I can come up with a creative solution that is not written anywhere. However, the reason I can do that is that I have read so many books on the subject; I can combine lessons from all of them into new solutions.
Gives you something to talk about – Have you ever run out of stuff to talk about with your best friend, wife or husband? This can be uncomfortable. It might even make married couples wonder if their marriage is in trouble. However, if you read many books, you will always have something to discuss. You can discuss various plots in the novels you read, you can discuss the stuff you are learning in the business books you are reading as well. The possibilities of sharing are endless.
Books are inexpensive entertainment – What is the average price of a movie ticket these days? $18 – $10? You can buy a paperback for that price and be entertained for many hours more. If you have a used bookstore nearby, you can get them even cheaper.
Tip: Once you make reading a habit, you will enjoy reading the books in your chosen career as well.
You can learn at your own pace – Where formal education requires time commitments, books have no late-bells or hourly commitments. So you can learn at your own pace when you read books.
New mental associations – I touched on this above. As you read more books the depth and breadth of your knowledge expands and your ability to form new organizations increases. In reading a book to discover the solution to one problem, you find the solution to others you may not have considered.
Improves your reasoning skills – Books for professionals contain arguments for or against the actions within. A book on cooking argues that Chili powder goes well with beef and goes poorly with ice cream. A book on building a business argues that testing an idea for profitability before setting up is a smart strategy and argues against just barreling forward with the idea without testing.
You too will be able to reason better with the knowledge you gain. Some of the arguments will rub off on you. Others you will argue. Regardless, you will have better reasoning ability.
Builds your expertise – Brian Tracy has said one way to become an expert in your chosen field is to read 100 books on the subject. He also said by continuing the same for 5 years you will become an international expert. With the Internet and blogs, you could hone that time down to 2-3 years if you follow through.
Saves money – Apart from saving money on entertainment expenses. Reading books that help you develop your skills saves money. Reading books on how someone went bankrupt will be a warning to you against repeating their mistakes. Reading a book on how to build your own backyard deck saves the expense of hiring a contractor.
Decreases mistakes – Although I would never suggest putting off an important goal because you fear making mistakes, it is still important to sharpen the saw. When you gather the deep and wide wisdom that books can provide, you are less apt to make mistakes.
You will discover surprises - As you read more books as a source of information, you will learn stuff you were not looking for. I have read many great quotes on life and love by reading books on marketing. I have learned facts about biology from reading about chemistry. Heck, I have picked up some facts about history while reading about business and real estate. Since so many subjects intertwine, it is almost impossible not to learn something other than the book’s subject.
Decreased boredom – One of the rules I have is if I am feeling bored, I will pick up a book and start reading. What I have found by sticking to this is that I become interested in the book’s subject and stop being bored. I mean, if you are bored anyway, you might as well be reading a good book.
Can change your life – How many times have you heard of a book changing someone’s life? For me, it was Your Erroneous Zones by Wayne Dyer, which is the first self-development book I read. It opened my eyes to a completely new way of thinking that was not depressing and dull. It was the first step in my path of choosing my own life and being free of old habitual thought patterns.
Can help break a slump – Being in a slump is uncomfortable. If you are a writer, you call it writer’s block. If you are a salesperson, it is called not making a sale in 23 days. However, a slump can be a crossroads. It might be you are wavering on your commitment to a particular project or (with marriage) person. On the other hand, a slump can be simply a lack of new ideas. Books are a great source of ideas, big and small. So if you find yourself in a slump, pick a book on the portion of your life you are slumping.
Reduces stress - Many avid readers, including myself, unwind by reading. Compared with the person who gets home from work and immediately turns on the TV news, you are going from work stress to crime stress. However, it is not just news. TV as a source of relaxation is too full of loud commercials and fast moving and very often violent images. If relaxation is something, you want, turn off the TV or computer and pick up a book.
Gets you away from digital distractions – If you, like many others, feel overwhelmed with the flashing lights, beeps and ring-a-dings that burn up our computing lives, then give books a chance. When you find some good books, you will find yourself drawn into the subject matter. You will want to spend more time reading. By spending more time reading books, you will have less time for the plethora of the digital gadgets begging for our attention.
You will make more money - If you make a serious effort to read in your chosen career, your expertise in that specialty will increase. As you become more specialized and learned you join a smaller group of more qualified people. By being part of the small, few with the highest-level knowledge your pay will increase. It is simple supply and demand.
The bottom line is that there is a reading genre for every literate person on the planet, and whether your tastes lie in classical literature, poetry, fashion magazines, biographies, religious texts, young adult books, self-help guides, street lit, or romance novels, there’s something out there to capture your curiosity and imagination.
Step away from your computer for a little while, crack open a book, and replenish your soul and your brain for a little while.

11/8 questions tag??
okay, so I was tagged by both bambam’s girlfriend @sadradmom (don’t fight it) and the sweet angel @sambashua, but I guess there are like different versions because one requires eight questions and the other eleven, so I’m just gonna do all of them and come up with eight (because there’s only so many original ones I can come up with lolol)
destiny’s questions~
1. Character that you would beat the shit out of and they can’t do anything about it? for any of my moon lovers/scarlet heart: ryeo fans, my target is queen yoo :)
2.What ending pissed you off the most? (in anything books, movies, tv shows?) hm, I don’t think I’ve ever watched anything with a super terrible ending? at least to the point I’m pissed. but, even though this show didn’t end and it was just the completing of a season, I was heartbroken by season three of Sleepy Hollow and I haven’t touched that show since because of it.
3. are you kinky? lmao ( if your comfortable list your kinks? i’m nosey af) I usually don’t feel comfortable talking about sex (at least in detail and for a long time) but I’m becoming better at it (hey! I posted a smut the other day, I’ve leveled up). I will say I have a plethora of them and I’ve always known this, but I’ll leave it at that ;)
4. zodiac sign and mbti type? virgo and infp (I feel like infp fits pisces more, but I like that infp fits my inner thoughts better. and I just love being a virgo)
5. are you better with animals, adults, old people, people your own age or kids? I’ve always felt most comfortable around animals. I befriend them easily and they bring me calm like no other living being. I also feel comfortable around adults (friend-wise) and I like to see their lives and philosophies and try to mature with their advice. I also, for some reason, really disliked kids when I was younger but now that I’ve gotten older, I see so much potential and creativity in these little humans and it’s such a nice break from the ugly of the world. Kids deserve love and everything good tbqh
6. Do you like holding hands, kissing, hugs or none? All of it. Every bit. I love physical affection (from the right people anyway)
7.something you’ll always have a soft spot for? (bands, movies, shows, people, etc.) I think I’ll always have a soft spot for Michael Clifford from 5SOS. He was open about his mental health and just represented someone I could look up to as a freshman in high school trying to understand everything about who I was and who I wanted to be. I had a huge crush on him but when I stopped listening to his band, I drifted away. I found out recently he’s got a girlfriend and is doing well, and it made me really happy :)
8. do you have small, big or average size hands? Small to average. I don’t think my fingers are particularly long, I just know a lot of people with smaller fingers haha. Almost everything about me physically is tall or big lol
9. have you had your first kiss? did you like it or regret doing it with that person? I haven’t
10. Do you want kids? Yeah, if I do have them I’ll probably aim for one but I might give them a sibling along the way.
11. What do you usually get attracted to in people? (romantic or just in generally or both) Romantically, I get attracted to their aura and the way they act/react. I’m cautious about who I surround myself with because other people’s lives and things ultimately affect how I feel. If my friends are annoyed, I’m annoyed. I try not to befriend/hang around people who get angry often or quickly because that’s one of my peeves, and it just ends up making me angry in the process. Also, this is totally a virgo thing but I look for things in that person that I could help them with? not deliberately, but I just notice like “oh, maybe I could comfort them about that” or “i’m similar to them with this situation, we can lean on each other for that”. relatability and solidarity is something I really like between people romantically or not
mir’s questions~
1. What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream? (shoutout to sicheng ma boy) (shoutout to winwin lol me 2) it’s always been strawberry. I love eating the lil strawberries in the ice cream cause they always tasted better to me than normal strawberries (prob the sugar its been sitting in, majo)
2. If you could achieve one thing without working for it what would it be? unimaginable wealth or maybe fame?
3. A picture that describes your aesthetic? goblin is my whole aesthetic
4. What’s a song that’s always stuck in your head? EH EH DODAECHE NAN WHY WHY WHY MAEIL BAM (listen to i’m serious by day6 and save your life)
5. Do you have a video you always find yourself watching? Which one? there’s this... cursed vine of sungjae from btob where like another member is introducing himself in chinese and they pass the mic to sungjae and he just sTARTS YELLING HIS CHINESE INTRO AND IT’S SO FUNNY??? LIKE I DIE EVERY TIME
6. What’s one thing you love about yourself? (and don’t say nothing bc imma hunt you down bc you gotta love yourself okay bc ily) (pls don’t hunt me down mir) I guess... I really love that I’m a peacemaker. I like that I can be something of a safe haven or a break from the stressful for people. It makes me feel like I have a reason to meet the people I do and do the things I do.
7. If you could live anywhere in the world where would you live? Why? Paris or Hawaii. Paris because I’ve always loved Paris and have been fascinated with the city for a while, and it just feels like it’d be such a dream to be from there. If not Paris, I would say Hawaii because I think truthfully my soul needs some sun and water. I think living on an island would bring me some peace, and Hawaii just looks like a really nice place to live the rest of your life at
8. If you could spend a full day with your bias what would you do? Where would you go? What would you talk about? Oh boy, it depends on the bias? But I’ll say wang puppy for now. I’d take him to an amusement park because I love amusement parks and we would just go wild on the rides, get wet (if there’s like a mini water park area), eat tasty amusement park food and when the day winds down and the sun is setting, I’ll just sit with him and talk about everything about ourselves. I’d probably get up and dance with him to the music playing in the park and just end the day on a warm, fulfilled note
now, to what you skimmed through all my answers to get to, my q’s!
1. What’s the worst movie/tv show you’ve ever seen, and why?
2. If you could either live as the only person in the world in another garden of Eden (basically, everything is provided for you and grows on its own accord so you can just laze and live) or bring world peace to the world we have now, which would you pick?
3. What song resonates with your soul?
4. You’re given a plane ticket to any place in the world, the entire trip free of charge. Where are you going?
5. Name a bias of yours that you wouldn’t marry. Why?
6. What type of people piss you off?
7. What genre of movie would you think would be the most fun to live in?
8. Do you prefer fantasy or reality?
tagging: @calemiel @marktuansflip @maydayjyp @jingogi @jisoft @laysekai @svthansols @dabguk
#i tried to tag out of my usual people but i still tagged some usual people lol#you don't have to do it but I'd love to know y'all's answers!#majspeaks

Compiled Web Forums On Magical Traps (Mahou Shounen)
Greetings!
I've Googled and Binged this search term and constantly end up with scattered partial and often mislabeled references. I'm seeking any listings of boys/men who transform into Magical-Girls/Traps in Anime or Manga to compile a complete one. If anyone can direct me to such listings I'd be most grateful.
Thanks for any tips!
Location: Two Steps from Hell.
Kampfer - I'm a bit skeptical to calling this a true magical girl show but it has elements of that. It's largely a comedy.
Gonna be the Twin-Tail! - I actually haven't watched this show so I can't provide any thoughts.
There's also a show this season that is what you're looking for but I can't recall its name. . .
Ohg, there's also KoreZom (known affectionately as Korean Zombie Desk Car to fans) which is more a parody of the magical girl genre. It's not exactly a Magical-Girl/Trap thing but crossdressing (purposefully!) as one.
Location: Indianapolis, IN (formerly Mimiho Valley)
The one this season is Magical Girl Raising Project.
There's also Is This A Zombie? which may be the most infamous case since he still looks like a guy but is dressed like a magical girl.
Location: Frisco, TX

I don't know if the moderators will want us to post information/thoughts on the shows but I know of two (maybe a bit more). In the case they do want us to avoid listing, I'll edit this post later.
It's fine. It's not like we see very many requests for "recommendations, so opinionate away! Back to top
DuskyPredator It...it's not like I post for you or anything!

No mention yet of Cute High Earth Defense Club Love!, a parody anime which has a group of boys transform into girly magical girl like forms?
As mentioned above there was Kampfer and Gonna be the Twin Tail which had gender swapping with a transformation. Plus the big gimmick mentioned of with the main character of Kore wa Zombieturning into a magical girl with the costume to get power, but still looking like a dude.
I might count some jokes in Baka Test of a male character an magical girl transformation (plus guy who looks like a girl). I can't remember if it specifically had some, but I know that there is some crossdressing cute boy character and parodies including magical girls in Ebiten, but someone else would have to confirm it. Not sure if you would count it, but Gatchaman Crowds has some similarities to magical girls, although a bit more shounen, and Rui is a male character who almost always dresses as a girl. Chuunibyou's second season had a male character dress up as a magical girl, being noted as pretty I think. The short form Himegoto has a lot crossdressing, a male character does get dressed as a magical girl. The title male character from Hayate the Combat Butler has been made into a magical girl before.
There are a few others I am aware of that have crossdressing but not necesarilly anything that looks like a magical girl, or another that has a magical girl like transformation sequence but does not end up looking particularly feminine. Back to top

Thanks to you all! Your recommendations are just the leads I'm looking for to create a complete summarized list of this niche genre so don't doubt how accurate your suggestions were! You're hitting in the ballpark! Thanks all!

loathe to admit it, since it was such a horrible change from the manga, and Sensei herself hated it as well, but Sailormoon Stars.
The male pop idols the Starlights transform into female Senshi (note that their original form is female, the male human forms are the false forms). Back to top

I vaguely recall one where there's a guy who's being chased by enemies of a warrior princess who he's the reincarnation of but not sure if she was magical. Back to top

Personally, I think the Stars anime arc was WAY better than the one in the manga. Everybody had more personality and the last battle was just amazing.
What's horrible about that change? Unless you're a yuri fan. Which I'm not.
Three women tricking EVERYONE into thinking they are a boy band simply by crossdressing makes zero sense....besides, that's the opposite of what girls like. lol

@OP: Since magical girl transformations are usually magical, are you interested in anime about boys that become female while they are magical girls? There are a couple manga titles (or perhaps more) fitting this description but in one of them the author never specifically reveals whether he actually becomes female or not. Back to top

I'm avoiding from limiting the field and taking in the total concept that if the male appears to the public as a magic girl, whether via real transformation (finding surprisingly beautiful guy into magic girl henshin sequences like Twintails) or trapping it, it goes. Granted, there're more difficult plot reasons just why a guy would super-trap it though I do dimly recall reading from far back - and I'm sure the anime concerned was "Princess Knight" -- that one of its original concepts was a martial artist/swordsman boy who does Zorro trap style to evade any suspicion. (It harkens to my Eng Lit days when I learned the original Victorian-age manuscript of the "Blue Lagoon" novel had sibling main characters, not more conventionally palatable cousins...)
If there were a m-f counterpart to "1/2 Prince", that'd make one nice TG "henshin" show with more serious plots and deep characters; with VRMMO anime so hot I'm surprised this character device hasn't played out more by now like in Log Horizon. There're quite a few transgender henshin one scene gags in a few older anime that's very difficult to catch -- it'd mean literally viewing every anime made because such scenes were never "indexed" for the web. But whether via magic or VR, it'd like to see a TG henshin story played straight that would involve all kinds of personal and social complications than shy them.
Anyway thanks for the input!! Back to top

While I don't want to say that any fanservicey or silly show about magical girls with traps represents the transgender experience in any way, Jun is without a doubt a boy who'd rather be a girl. In one episode where Jun is magically transformed into a girl it basically answers the question "What would happen if the prettiest girl in school, who is actually a boy actually became a girl?" Besides how could we not mention Jun Watarase in this thread? One of the epic traps in anime before traps became a thing. Back to top

Good tip! Your lead that Jun did a magical girl gig (if only briefly in a OVA) made the list! Personally, I really believe that was really meant as a trial balloon to such a spin-off... By real-life experience I can see a trap being so insufferably cute that he becomes as popular to boys as girls. I recall a mention in Brazil where the teen trap was a mall lizard who got treated to movies and free video parlor games by schoolboys and it was (supposedly) a totally platonic date thrill thing. I think we're going to see similar here as social tolerances keep rising. Also your mention also prompts me to wish a show with a kind of "magical-girl guy" secret/clueless alter-life romance angle to stir the pot with, or even a club of magical-girl traps (secretly of ages up and down the scale) who uniquely have other things to do besides bumping another off. Works 4 me!! I think this is kind of what Mayo elle Otokonoko was supposed to be. A proposed anime series that never saw the light of day other than a PV that came with the opening song release. As far as I can tell it is either about a school comprised entirely of traps or has a trap club and permits male students to wear the girl's uniform but doesn't seem to have any sort of magical element.
Btw the song is totally cute and sung by the same person who sung the ending songs for other shows featuring traps such as Happiness! Otoboku and Steins;Gate.

Great catch! Thanks! La Pucelle about personified the ideal magical girl-guy philosophy. It's a shame La Pucelle skipped a Henshin sequence. (I'm seeking well done and tasteful guy into magic chick Henshin scenes on the side too.) I like Magical Girl Raising for bringing up the point that if the worlds inside anime/manga truly reflected their populations' sentiments and fantasies that there ought be a heck of lot more magical girl-guys than they portray. (Or maybe Kyubey doesn't know the sex switch trick like Favv does! ) Back to top

Thanks for the really useful heads' up tip even though Mayo doesn't appear magical. It just seems peculiar to me that when yuri and yaoi and even sibsex are so pervasive in manga and anime that there's relatively so little dedicated work or even fan forums in the traps cuter than girls genre in general. Seems to me there's just as much meat for creative comedy and drama and offbeat variations there, especially when you include the VRMMO realm which kind of straddles reality and magical. (I have a gut feeling that SAO [and Log Horizon] willfully nipped any VR-trap storylines in the bud in the very first ep which I think was a mistake, as Magical Girl Raising shows can work well). An aside; I wish VR people educated people more that just attaching goggles to something optical doesn't make it "VR". There are pre-Xmas sales here in NYC of View-Masters and even binoculars being sold as VR devices.) Well, here's wishing for a anime trap convention OVA! Back to top

The second season of Log Horizon actually had something interesting with the character spoiler[Tetra]who could come as a surprise, but some like myself picked up the clues, that the characterspoiler[most like a magical girl, was originally a man]. Although the series kind of was always on the cusp of saying something. Back to top

Yea, missed that! Luv s/he! Are VR traps like that way too flirty to really be straight? Back to top

Greetings; I checked out DuskyPredator's Log Horizon tip and must say she-he is an interesting character, which brings up the fascinating psychology of how long and what a soul sealed up a different avatar over time will begin evolving into beyond their original personalities, maybe even becoming a new "backstory" to that character. To more directly answer Newbie, I'd guess the Log Horizon character in question was likely originally gay because I can't imagine someone else teasing and wildly flirting guys like that, though as I mentioned over time maybe that avatar and its social standing there will shape a new persona. Not really a magical girl-guy issue -- unless we have one trapped in Log Horizon to start with. VRMMO is the one "reality" way to have true magical girls and magical girl-guys. So the list goes on. I've just watched this show. Birdy the Mighty has a school boy who shares his body with an alien female law enforcer. Normally he has the boy's appearance but, when necessary, transforms into the girl in order to deal with sundry villains. The show combines action and comedy. The transformations cause confusion for his family and his prospective girlfriend. They two personalities also hold internal conversations.
I haven't seen it yet, but I assume the remake - Birdy the Mighty Decode - has the same premise. Back to top
ChibiKangaroo Birdy the Mighty is quite good. I'm not sure if it falls in this category just because i think boy + girl merging into one being or sharing a body is kind of its own thing, but it is similar.
Thanks for this head's up! Though not magic related the gender swapping aspect makes a list. Errinundra wrote: I've just watched this show. Thanks, a good mention, though not exactly a magical-girl theme, more like the "science girl" trap that's Twintails, but gender duality theme makes the honorable mention list. I'm kind of getting inspired to try doing a magical trap short myself, only I'm a lousy artist! Back to top
GoddessOtome I was gonna say La Pucelle from Magical Girl Raising Project.

You mean Magical Girl RAZING Project!
Happy New Year All!
I need help in an accurate translation for the titles of my listings for magical girl-guys and virtual girls/women. I'd appreciate any sage knowledge of whether the Japanese term "Mahou Shounen" actually literally translates out as either "male magical girls" or "males who transform into magical girls," and if there's a more accurate one please tip me. I found quite a few "male magical girls" are actually traps in magical girl guise which to me isn't quite the real deal though legit enough in topic.
Also for a parallel listing this topic has inspired, I'm seeking Japanese terms for "VR women who are men" and "VR trap" or "VR TG". I'm trying to discriminate in that you probably wouldn't qualify a male trapped as a female avatar in Log Horizon as actually being a trap which to me is more of a "lark adventure" situation (as originally happened in the 1st SAO ep) than a involuntary trapped "TG" situation as occurs in LH.
Thanks for any assist! Back to top

Well "mahou shoujo" is literally "magic" and "girl", so "mahou shounen" should just be "magical boy". I think that I have seen it used to refer to a character like Chrono from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, who is really a male version of what the titular character is. I think that if a male character turned into a girl they would be a full magical girl. But I still feel tempted to call Ayumu a magical girl despite his gender not changing.
@DuskyPredator
Some things in regards to KoreZom, I don't think they referred to themselves as Magical Girls (mahou shoujo). Instead the term was "masou shoujo" and the English equivalent translation of it, from the fansubs I've seen, was Magiclad Girl. So, yes, he's not a magical girl in many senses since he just, err, wears their garments.
@maxlance
I don't know of any Japanese equivalence for the terms you're looking for but the term I've seen used in papers and such is "gender swapping*" so hopefully that will aid you in finding a Japanese equivalence of the term.
*This terms refers to playing as the opposite gender in games.

Oh, you're just splitting hairs here.
Ayumu *is* a magical girl in every sense of the term. He's got a bloody HENSHIN SEQUENCE. Back to top
maxlance Greetings all and thanks for the feedback!
Can those in the lingo know straighten me out on phase usage? Google Translate is almost useless in providing me what "trap" (as in crossdresser) is In Japanese, never mind the full term "Magical Trap", or "Virtual Woman Man" like a guy's fem-VR avatar in LH, unless they have to be made up which ought be fun. Maybe some another language might be plastic enough to possess such terms! My listing does distinguish between true biologically changed guys into real magical girls (like Twintails) and those becoming "magical traps." I am also coming around to accepting fully mind swapped magical girl dudes as the real deal (say a brother mind-swaps his sis's to kindle her magical bod) if the situation calls it, along with multiple personality magical girl traps as being legit as well. Another category I might consider splitting off are "techno-magical magical traps" as in Twintails, as opposed pure magic magical traps as La Purcell in Magical Girl Raising. Supposedly there's a Sailor Moon magical girl guy in the works but have to dig that out.
Thanks for your input! Back to top

Writing/Reading and Loving/Hating Different Series by the Same Author
Recently, I got a lovely review for the Dawn Warrior by the amazing Mrs. Y on twitter. And in her review, she stated that she isn’t going to review the Lone Prospect because she didn’t like it as much and she doesn’t want to hurt my book sales. (The very few of them that I have.) Mrs. Y likes books with very limited “breathable/ma/quiet” moments. The Lone Prospect is full of those types of moments. The Dawn Warrior has a few but is a much tighter book action wise.
This is deliberate. I wrote these books for two very different audiences. The Dawn Warrior is more of an old school romantic fantasy a lah Mercedes Lackey and her Elemental Mages or 500 Kingdoms Series. While, The Lone Prospect (Rodeo’s Run and Serpent’s Smile) is a more modern style fantasy a lah Anne Bishop’s The Others Series. So, if you like Mercedes Lackey, you’d probably prefer the Dawn Warrior. And if you like Anne Bishop, you’d probably enjoy the Lone Prospect more.
That’s okay. That’s fine. I accept that. Because I wrote them that way on purpose.
The themes of the Heaven’s Heathens MC and the Dawn Series are very similar. I’m tackling them in different ways. Also, the worlds are very different. In The Dawn Series, I’m relying on standard fantasy world tropes. Roxana is a Princess who has been cursed with a traditional curse. There are standard Grimm (and others) tales that I’m working off of, there are well known rules and guidelines that crop up in fantasy over and over again that adults who love fantasy know already. I don’t have to explain myself! I don’t have to go “here are the rules.” That would bore everyone to tears.
If you’ve seen a Disney movie, enjoyed How to Train Your Dragon, played DnD, or read Narnia, Tolkien or Grimm’s Fairy Tales, you’ve got a basic idea of how the Dawn Series works. It’s your basic standard fantasy world just a bit more broken up. The Sleeping Princess happens to be a Warrior and is helping a Beauty and the Beast to keep their daughter from becoming a Rapunzel. Oh, and there’s a dragon. He’s a teenager. He’s also very powerful and a bit of a magic nerd. He’d be excellent at CinemaSins.
But, Heaven’s Heathens MC isn’t like that at all. I’m working against genre and against common knowledge. Heaven’s Heathens is set in a post-World War 3 future, where there are flying cars and huge towers offset by tiny towns and huge expanses of wilderness reclaimed from cities and mega-farms. And the main characters are werewolves that ride motorcycles. Motorcycle culture isn’t well known. I can’t assume that everyone who reads my books has watched Sons of Anarchy. I’m a big fan of showing things rather than telling things.
This takes pages.
This takes making breathable, quiet moments where the characters interact and it doesn’t look or feel like it’s effecting the plot at all. I’m making the rules. It’s science fiction, but it’s not space opera science fiction with aliens and star fighter battles where everyone knows the rules because of Star Trek, Asimov, Weber and to some extent Star Wars. It’s more Minority Report. It’s Dredd. It’s a touch of Mad Max.
Those are very niche science fiction types.
So why do this? Why make this hard for myself? Why not write a straight up contemporary urban fantasy about a werewolf biker club that has adventures? Wouldn’t that be easier? Whelp, A, I don’t want to offend REAL biker clubs. I value my life and if I wrote contemporary I’d have to mention REAL clubs. That is a recipe for disaster so, I’d really rather not. B, for the past 60 years, science fiction has been always about the perils of technology and fear of the alien. We have been stuck in this Cold War and then the Vietnam War mindset.
It’s time for Science Fiction to move onwards. There can be more to science fiction than aliens and ray guns and space ships. There can be more to urban fantasy than mysteries and really bad toxic abusive relationships. There can be more to fantasy than women only throwing magic and dragons being ‘evil.’
This may make my work non-commercial. Perhaps, retellings of fairytales are overdone. (Though Lackey is the only one I see mixing them up instead of doing them straight.) Seeing the same things on shelves over and over with just the names and the “jobs” being different is leaving a rather large gap in the market that is thirsty for new things.
However, experimenting is risky. That’s why I have the Dawn Series. My Heathen’s series is an experiment. It’s an experiment that is probably not going to get huge. (I mean, it’s my baby and all but I’m more than well aware of how complicated it is to sell ‘biker werewolves’ that are pushing ‘family themes.’) The Dawn Series is something simple. It’s different but still easy to understand. It’s an introduction to my writing style more than anything. It’s me. But it’s me edited.
I really do feel that Heathens is more ‘what I do’ than the Dawn Series. As much as I love the Dawn Series and the idea of breaking up fairytales and stitching them back together, Heathens and that type of writing, where I put in a lot of character and family type moments, is really my first love. Yes. It’s longer. Yes. It at times may seem to drag if all you want is fighting and explosions.
Now, I love fighting and explosions. That’s why they turn up in every book!
At the same time, I love the quiet moments. I love when characters are picking on each other. I love when they’re doing things together that prove they are human. I love characters with hobbies and flaws and friends. There are many series I’ve put down because despite them being over 125K words, I get to the end of the second or third book and still know nothing about the characters.
It’s easy to keep your books short if your characters don’t have friends or family or a life outside of their work. But that’s not healthy and it’s not realistic. But if you want something that’s no friends, no family and no life outside of their work, go read the Dawn Warrior. Roxana is pretty stubborn that way. But if you want to see a bunch of people being a huge family with siblings that squabble, go read the Lone Prospect.
You can like both. You can like one or the other. It all depends on your taste. It’s okay to like one series by an author and not another one. Different series allows writers to reach different audiences, play with different themes or tropes and dabble in different writing styles and worlds. You can like Pern without liking the lesser known Talents series. You can like Valdemaar and not like the Elemental Masters or the Jousters Series. You can like Dresden but not like Codex Alera. You can like Heaven’s Heathens and not like the Dawn Series. It’s FINE. It’s okay!
We accept this. (I mean, as long as you like something. J/K!)
Diversifying our range of books is how authors make money. It’s how we grow our audience without sacrificing our current audience who many not like certain tropes or genres. Your hardcore fantasy reader probably isn’t going to jump into your steampunk fantasy right away. (I loved the Black Jewels. Ephemera didn’t do anything for me at all. So I was very leery about the Others books. They were good until Book 4.) It’s okay. It’s fine. It’s normal.
What isn’t normal would be telling the author and being put out that they didn’t write something exactly to your tastes all the time. That’s entitlement and not cool. So, I’m grateful to Mrs. Y for her being honest and saying “Heathens isn’t my cuppa, so I’m not going to officially review it.” That’s classy.
Writing like this can make it hard for authors because we can’t always say, “Well, you like this series so I’m sure you’ll like my other series.” Because we know that’s not the way it works, especially if the only thing they really have in common is werewolves. Not everyone who loves werewolves is going to love what you do with the werewolves either!
Shortly, we write different series because we have different things to say that appeal to different people. And if you don’t like what we say to other audiences, that’s fine. As long as you aren’t rude to us when you say so. Because we love all our of readers no matter what series you read. So, stay classy everyone and read what you love.

Girls’ Last Tour 8
Why do I get the feeling the girls will lose the camera soon?
I noticed the names on the drawers before the girls did. I just never mentioned it.
That snow transition to Chi was…weird…
I think at least a small part of the problem with this show is that it’s drab. Another part is that your appreciation of the show depends on how you view it as relaxing or mind-numbing when you watch it week-to-week. Yet another aspect is that it rides upon, also, your appreciation of the philosophical content that you’re allowed to wade in as part of the show.
“Pumped up” doesn’t seem to be the right word, subbers. I don’t know why (maybe context?), but I don’t feel pumped up when I see the moon. The moon, to me, would be motivating if I were in their situation, but it sure wouldn’t pump me up…
“Magic power”? Judging from the mouthflaps, the word was mahou which just translates to “magic”, and would’ve done decently here too.
Please don’t ship the lolis…
Please don’t make the lolis drunk, either…
Underage drinking! Censor it, censor it! (half-joking tone)
Huh? There’s a small after-credits segment. Keep watching…
Uhh…*thinks about a compulsive habit involving hair eating* Yeah, no thanks.
Girls’ Last Tour 9
If humans are the only living things left, what about the fi-yeah, spoke too soon.
Why did a robot want to protect a fish anyway?
Yuu has discovered the human capacity to float after kicking.
Chi’s favourite conversant is a box. A grey box. Amazing… (sarcasm dripping)
Chi has discovered the thing from One Piece known as Super Drowning Skills.
As they said in Finding Nemo, “fish are friends, not food”! Hahaha.
These robots look like something out of a Shaun Tan book, yeeps. (Didn’t see the construct-o-bot too clearly the first time he appeared.)
It’s like a mother talking to a daughter, only this time it’s in robot-speak. All 1s and 0s…
I did not come here to watch robots explode. But these robots exploding…cool! Like an action movie!
What was that last part with the robot communication circles and patterns for? I guess it made more sense with the volume on, huh…
Houseki no Kuni 8
Why do I get the ominous feeling the biting “ice floe” was Aculeatus or someone like that (and not Ventricosus, the king)?
I love how grumpy Antarc is when they’re like, “Tha failure is all mine” and they’re just holding their hand like it’s no problem. The hand really is no problem, especially in contrast to Phos, come to think of it.
It’s hard to convince someone when you literally have no hands to do it with…
“I raise my hands in defeat.” – Phos in on my level of puns. I was going to make a hand pun and then they come up with this, which is much better than what I could think up on the fly.
Notice Phos is the only colour in this winter world…
I knew gold was soft and platinum too, but…what does that have to do with-oh wait. Never mind.
It’s like something out of a horror film…it’s sheer genius.
Oh dear. It seems I’ve fallen for a sensei-only yandere. What a problem…
Hey, doesn’t this look familiar? Like a kagune, for instance?
U---uwahhhhhhhh…My boy Antarc was taken and now he’ll be Lunarian weapons…Plus with those cracks, Phos looks sadder than usual…
Huh? ED change? “Liquescimus”?...Oh, I see.
This next ep preview…is weird. Especially because you see Kongou-sensei smash his head into a wall…
Houseki no Kuni 9
When they said spring was a time for change, I’m betting they didn’t mean this…(what happened to Phos)
Interestingly, the gold looks like a rapier. Or some other old-timey sword. Then it becomes a spider lily, which is a symbol of death.
Phos’s eyes look like Antarc’s used to…plus they’ve gained a personality like theirs too.
Crying? A defect? No, no…
A bit of a mess? No, Phos, you’re more than a mess.
Phos is still wearing the old uniform, huh. Mourning clothes.
Ah, so that’s where Phos mentions it’s gold and platinum. No wonder Karandi knew…
So it’s not “with great power comes great responsibility?” Or is it just the subbers having fun?
Cinnabar seems to be a lot like Bakugo. Just without the extreme “I’ll beat you up!” stuff.
Phos’s jerk face, LOL. Haven’t seent that in a while…
Netjuu no Susume 8
I’m really unsatisfied with the fact I’ll have to say goodbye to this show in 2 episodes…It’s been my favourite for this entire season, and when the competition is strong, that means this show – with all its fluff and misunderstandings – has done itself more than enough to deserve a spot on my favourites list.
This is Netjuu no Matome (Summary of an MMO Junkie). Honestly, my translation works a lot better than CR’s this time don’tcha think?
Hayabusa (Falcon) Moving Company. Makes sense if Amazon is its RL counterpart…
…then it turns out they wrote Hayabusa backwards on the moving van (Sabuyaha). LOL wut.
The ep title seems to be “[I] took a step forward”.
Harth? Well, spoilers. You just ruined my life…sort of.
I half-expected Yuki’s hat to blow off, but hey, this is an MMO. Hats don’t blow off unless you want them to.
Notice Sakurai uses keigo. You use keigo with people you don’t really know, by the by.
Dammit! Sakurai’s hot but Harth is better! Argh, such a simple artstyle. I shouldn’t be worked up over hot guys when there’s such a simple artstyle…
The eyecatches are so good. Why would you get rid of them in this episode, of all episodes???
T-They could’ve been lying to each other, like in And You Thought There Is Never a Girl Online? ??? Gah, but this show is so sweet, I’ll forgive it.
As soon as Sakurai’s battery died, I swear I just heard The Entertainer in my head. As if it’s all some big dream I’m bearing witness to. But of course, it’s fiction. It’s basically a shared dream for the lot of us who know about it. A sweet shared dream we can access anytime.
Every time I look at that credit list and see Maeno as Harumi…yeah…not gonna think about it. But it seems double-Sakurai even got Harth as a role. Wowee, Sakurai!
Netjuu no Susume 9
One episode and one OVA to go before these guys are gone…
“I Call That Feeling Marble” – Why “marble”?
Sono Kimochi Ma-buru…so they weren’t quite lying when they said “marble”, eh? Sono Kimochi would translate to “that feeling”. However, ma-buru could be “marvel”, so it could be “I Call That Feeling [a] Marvel” (which makes a lot more sense).
I swore Morimori-chan would’ve asked to be partners! The fact that she didn’t was so disappointing…
There were some ducks drifting along in the foreground of one shot.
What happened to Harumi, come to think about it?
Is there an equivalent to TGIF in Japanese???
*Morimori-chan jumps out of chair* That’s me whenever I get a text, hahaha.
The show shows its Comico roots – that park background looks like it came out of a visual novel, which is a sort of trademark of Comico series like ReLIFE and it. Nanbaka, on the other hand…if you’ve seen it before, you’ll be aware of what that show’s visual quirk is.
So the woman’s name isn’t Sendai, but Yashiro? Okay then.
I want a Fujimoto-centric thing now. Please, someone? Do it for me?
I feel like Sakurai and Tenya Iida would be good brothers in an AU. They act in similar ways to each other.
Mahoutsukai no Yome 8
The shot to the head (Cartaphilus received) was so brief, I actually found it funny.
“This girl [Chise] has strange taste.” – Indeed, she does. But that’s why we follow her.
“But you don’t hate it, do you?”
Joseph…?
Mahoutsukai no Yome 9
(looks at shop sign when Chise sits down) Someone can’t spell “biscuits”…
How did Ruth learn the familiar binding spell anyway? Does Elias have a familiar, too? Or does he not have one since he’s part fairy?
It’s really hard to see what Elias’s monster form no. 3 (or is that no. 2?) looks like.
The humour in this show is somewhat unwarranted. It doesn’t always work, either. (I like a majorly consistent show best. Incongruous mood whiplashes don’t always work, after all.)
Is it Silver or Silky? I still don’t understand…
These roses must mean something in flower language…
Apparently there used to be an old trend of lesbian vampires. It’s a pretty old-fashioned trope, so it feels quite at home here. Update: Scratch that, a Leanan Sidhe is apparently more of a succubus, which was the exact vibe I was getting from her. Lesbian succubi? That’s a new concept.
That dragon!!!
Juuni Taisen 9
I think I’ve seen some spoilers saying Rabbit dies. I already knew everyone bar one *eyes Rat* will die anyway, but the game is in seeing how they die.
Were CGI models the best for this moment? Probably not, but there was some good movement from Usagi there.
Did you notice the shining light when Ox repositioned his sword (after he jumped)?
100-person…that reminds me of the SekaTsuyo “Hundred Throws” thing, but please don’t talk to me about SekaTsuyo…
Of course Kanae’s backstory has drinking in it. Her tagline has to do with “drunken rage”…(half-sarcastic)
Hey, this episode is titled after Rabbit. Isin’s genre-breaking strikes again. Also the scribbles on the faces is a nice touch, but not as good as the marionettes from Rampo Kitan.
I swear they’re relying on CGI models for the Ox and Tiger in this episode...
I’d like to headcanon Eiji is good at soccer. Not as the Ox, but just as himself.
Well, “CGI models” was definitely true right there when the Tatsumi bros attacked.
Those ice effects got put to good use, at least.
If you sit a bit of a distance from the screen, you can see they really are CGI models, the Ox and the Tiger. Graphinica’s really pulling out the stops – after all, didn’t they just say “don’t do what you’re unused to doing”?
Juuni Taisen 10
*as some insigificant sniper falls to his death* Yeah, let’s ignore the bad quality of that…
Dangit, Ushii hasn’t been given a birth year! No, why Isin??? Why??? (But does Kanae use Chrome on her iPad?)
Slicing the bridge is a bit much, y’know, Ushii - even for my suspension of belief.
Who knew a stab to the heart could be more touching than any other death in this show? Maybe it’s a stab…to my feels. (You’re all groaning now, aren’t you?)
So…no explanation for home boy Usagi, then?
I think two of the kanji from “To Treat A Man Beef From His Own Cow” (the title, not the episode) are from Gobouken (the name of Ushii’s sword, and the name also means “bayonet”), which is interesting.
