The knock on your apartment door had never felt more damning than it did in that moment.
A knock on the front door was always a nightmare for someone who struggled with their mental health but that was on good days. Today, a knock on the door was definitely not something you were prepared to handle.
So you ignored it. Pulled your covers even further up over your head and hoped that whoever it was would just go away.
No such luck.
You hear the muffled sound of the deadbolt turning and then the seal of the door breaking as it inches open. “Hellooooo?” Is the familiar echo out into the empty space of your place. “Anybody home?”
“She’s gotta be here, her car is out front.”
Fuck it’s both of them. Every hope you had of just hiding and Eddie leaving got thrown out the window the moment you heard Steve was with him. On their own, either might be disheartened by no response – decide they were invading your privacy and leave before venturing too far inside.
Together, encouraging each other, it’s only a matter of minutes before they knock at your bedroom door.
Your pigsty of a bedroom that is covered in dirty clothes and dishes and probably smells weird and they can’t see–
“Don’t come in,” you rasp from your bed, voice tired from disuse as you break your silence for the first time in who knows how long.
“Sweetheart, where have you been?” Steve’s voice comes through the door, obviously right outside it. “We've been calling and calling for days.”
“I… I’ve been sick.”
“Sick? Why didn’t you say something, angel? Could’ve brought you some soup or something,” Eddie adds, sounding concerned. You can clearly picture the wrinkle between his eyebrows.
Eyes closing from their stare at the ceiling, you take a deep breath to force down the sickness that is threatening to rise with every lie that leaves your mouth. “I’m contagious. Don’t want to get you sick.”
“Oh, come on. We’re big strong men, right Harrington? We can fend off a little stomach bug, no problem.”
“Super human immune system, baby,” Steve confirms, and you can hear the smile on his face. It nearly breaks your heart. “No chance you’ll give us anything. So can we come in?”
“No!”
Neither of them say a word after your quick and forceful denial, leaving it to feel like it’s echoing out around the room and grating back into your own eardrums. Just to get it to stop, you softly add, “Please don’t.”
While you’re worried it might’ve been too soft for them to hear, you’re proven wrong by Steve saying, “Then will you come out here?” It’s a soft plea, warm and velvety in its concern and compassion, and it feels like a knife in the chest. “Tell us what’s really going on?”
There’s no way to get out of this. You haven’t showered in days, you probably smell rough and look even worse. You’ve been wearing the same sweatpants and hoodie for a week. And you’re going to have to open your door and face your two closest friends like this.
If you don’t go out there, they will come in here. And that’s too much, it’s safe in here, they can’t come in here–
“Okay, okay. I’m… Just gimme a minute.”
“Take your time, we’ll go hang out on the couch,” you hear one set of footsteps away from your door after Steve’s confirmation.
“Not too long though,” Eddie teases, “I’m gonna raid your fridge and eat all of it if you don’t stop me.”
The threat means nothing as he walks away too. There’s nothing in your fridge left that’s edible.
Anxiety from them being here and wanting them to be gone is enough to get you out of bed for the first time today, picking through the remaining pile of clean clothes to find a different pair of sweatpants and a top that isn’t as marinated in body as your current set, slapping on some deodorant and changing your underwear at the same time. You do the bare minimum to make your hair look less like a greasy, horrible mess and gargle some mouthwash because it’s easier than trying to brush your teeth. This already feels like so, so much effort and you haven’t even faced them yet.
This shouldn’t be this hard. Why the fuck is being a normal human being so hard for you? What is wrong with you–
As soon as you’ve even cracked the door open, their murmuring to each other stops and they turn toward you, looking small and unsure in your doorway. Two pairs of brown eyes staring holes into you, seeing right through you, and it feels so fucking painful that you want to just slam the door shut again. They’re looking at you so softly, with so much warmth and openness.
Because they pity you.
“What do you want?” Your voice is colder and softer than you meant it to be, not moving from your spot that blocks the view of your room from them. You could step out into the living room and close the door behind you to hide your shame, but leaving the safety of your bedroom isn’t something you’re willing to do yet.
“Your fridge is empty.” Eddie’s voice is as soft as yours but the corners of his mouth are turned down in a small frown. “The dishes in your sink have started to smell. Your trashcan and your mailbox are both overflowing.”
Shame and embarrassment presses hot behind your eyes, looking down at your feet. “If you’re just here to point out everything that’s wrong, you can get the fuck out of–”
“Sweetheart.” Steve cuts you off, not cruelly but enough to make you stop anyway. “When’s the last time you ate anything?”
Your heart drops into your stomach when he slowly stands, starting to slowly walk toward you like you’re a skittish animal. “I dunno… I’m not hungry.”
“Shit,” Eddie mutters from the couch, head falling to look at his clasped hands as he leans forward on his elbows.
“When’s the last time you showered? Left your apartment?” Steve continues, looking like his heart is breaking.
“Steve…” You whisper, a croak in your voice again while you shake your head at him. “Please, don’t… Don’t make me answer that.”
Eddie’s head raises again, drawing your attention. He looks just as heart broken as Steve. “Why didn’t you say anything, doll?”
A humorless laugh leaves you, sounding more like a choked gasp. “What the fuck was I supposed to say, huh? ‘Hey, sorry guys, I can’t even get myself to go to the fucking grocery store like a normal human being, can you help?’”
“Yeah,” he answers, sounding almost angry, shaggy hair falling off his shoulders when he nods, “for a start.”
“Eddie.” Steve looks back at him sharply, giving him a warning look that makes him soften again. When he looks back to you, still a safe few feet away, he asks, “What happened, sweetheart? What’s got you…?”
“Hurting?” Eddie offers when the other falters, pushing off his knees to stand as well.
“It’s just…” Your voice cracks, tears you haven’t been able to find in days suddenly pushing at your eyes without warning. You squeeze them closed as your breath catches to try and stop them.
What are you gonna tell them? ‘Oh everything’s so hard.’ Just tell them you’re a fucking child who can’t handle being alive? Might as well push them out the door now–
“Hey,” Steve’s soft voice interrupts your mental berating, taking another few steps closer. “It’s okay. You can tell us anything.”
“No judgement,” Eddie adds, an echo of one of the first things you said to him when the two of you met. It’s been a constant in the relationship you have with both of them. Anything any of you say – no matter how stupid, or fucked up, or wrong – no judgement. Maybe some teasing, depending on how stupid. But they’ve never judged you for anything and there is no reason for them to start now.
But this? Trusting someone, opening up to someone, letting someone in about this? The idea is terrifying.
“Everything’s just…” You trail off again, looking off and down the hallway away from them as you bring your arms up in a sort of hug for yourself. “It’s all just a lot, right now.”
“Will you…” Eddie shoves his hands into his pockets as he kicks out his boot like he’s kicking a rock. “Will you let us help you?”
You’re shaking your head before he can even finish the sentence. “I– I can’t ask you to do that.”
Steve’s fingertips brush your elbow, the first human touch you’ve had in longer than you can remember, and it has your head whipping toward him. “You’re not asking. We're offering.”
Hot tears increase the pressure in your head, now starting to pool at the bottoms of your eyes as you struggle to make eye contact with either of them.  “I don’t even know how you could help. It’s just… I can’t…”
“How about this,” Eddie walks up, moving to rest his shoulder on the wall beside the door frame you still occupy. “I’m gonna run to the store and stock up, plus grab us all something to eat on the way back.” You open your mouth to protest but he holds up his hand, “Ah, ah, ah.” It’s enough scolding to close your lips again in a tight line before he points at Steve. “Mr. Mom here can get started on cleaning up the kitchen so it’s nice and easy to cook in. And you tell us what you want to do.”
I want to curl into a ball on the floor and wait to die–
Your teary eyes finally look back and forth between them, begging for an answer – for them to put you out of your misery for even just a moment. “I can give you a couple of options to choose from, if that would help?” Steve offers, fingertips still lightly resting on your elbow.
Squeezing your eyes shut, both to let some of the tears fall and to push back the shame that wants to explode out of your mouth, you give him a stuttered nod of your head. “Okay. Door #1: While we do that, you go and try to take a shower.” The immediate pain must show on your face, because he quickly moves on. “Door #2: You come out here and lay on the couch while I start to clean up. You can take a nap, or we can talk, or we can listen to music – whatever you want. And Door #3, you go back and curl up in bed and we come back to get you when Eddie has some food for us.”
Door 3, door 3, door 3, every bone in my body wants to get back in bed and never get up–
A shaky breath in and out, you open your eyes to look at them. Eddie’s face is forced casual while Steve offers a small and supportive smile. You know they wouldn’t judge you if you picked Door #3 and got back into bed. If you went back to the indent you’ve most likely made from all the hours and hours spent in the same spot. But you want to try. Even if it’s just a little bit. Even if you end up back in bed right after anyway.
“If… If I pick Door #2,” Eddie’s mouth tilts up slightly and Steve’s eyebrows raise in interest, “then can I have a hug?”
“Oh angel,” Eddie presses a hand to his chest, right over his heart. “If you thought you were going to get away without a hug in any of those options, you’re sorely mistaken.”
You exhale a small laugh out of your nose, a teary smile on your face as they both step up to sandwich you between them in a tight hug. Eddie’s face presses to your ear, curly hair tickling your nose as he rests his mouth on your shoulder. Steve settles higher, resting his cheek on the side of your head as he tucks you closer to his chest. Both boys are warm, solid, and alive on either side of you – almost crushing you with the force of the embrace. But it’s the best crush you’ve ever felt, one that tells you that you’re alive and that someone cares. It makes the tears come through faster, falling down your cheeks with more force as you shudder in a breath.
Steve presses a kiss to your temple, squeezing you just a little bit tighter. “We’re here for you, sweetheart.”
Eddie’s hand fists in the back of your shirt, forcing you an inch closer. “As long as you need us. Not going anywhere.”
-
now I live in a place that feels smaller by the day four walls closing in from months spent inside them there is too much grief packed into this small place packed into this bed with unchanged sheets packed between these ribs that somehow are still unbroken and no one has ever been here not in this space, not in this bed, not between these ribs they are too full of my own grief for there to be any space I wish I had those tall ceilings to hold all of these things that are too much somehow, I've become the specter that haunted those halls

Happy Christmas eve! Quite a few hairs to finish us off here, however in all this month I still didn't entireley finish off my list of hairs under 2400 poly that I liked. So I've got a nice little backlog of low poly hair that I can retexture at a later date, and now I'm not self confined to under 2400 poly specifically I could maybe add some more to that list from the under 5000 category, which should be fun.
I tried to save some seasonal and fun accessory styles for today! Free 11 is probably the best fit for a christmassey style, the alpha edit isn't my own, it's actually just the alpha that Peggy originally made the greys in for this hair. The bows are a few Aelia colours. Trinity has the distinction of being the *only* 4t2 hair I did this whole month; @antoninko actually did it in the original Afterglow post, but this version is actually a recoloured version of @loosiap's V2 version with added gingham pattern on the scarf (which was not easy to make look decent, as the scarf texture is tinie, but I just didn't care for plain scarves), which sits closer to the head and the texture is blended with Nouk textures. Flora 28 also has hats in Aelia colours. I kind of followed the same logic as Flora with 59, with no pearls on unnaturals, but I made naturals with no pearls, too. Ulker 6 has polkadot headbands- I really wanted to do it as it reminded me so much of Mikako's mum in Neighborhood story! FInally, the tiara on F13 isn't part of the mesh, it's a seperate accessory and the necklace is attached to it. I've included it in the zip so you don't have to go find it yourself.
Additional credits: Peggy, Simcelebrity00, Rose, MYOS, Ulker and XMS Flora for the meshes and original textures, @rascalcurious for the 4t2 conversion, Antoninko for the afterglow textures and actions! check @the-afterglow-archive for more Afterglow ₊˚⊹♡

Hormones & Weight loss (part 2) : Insulin
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Insulin is a key hormone that regulates blood sugar levels by helping your body store and use glucose for energy. It plays a critical role in maintaining energy balance, but elevated insulin levels, often caused by overconsuming refined carbohydrates or poor lifestyle habits, can promote fat storage and lead to insulin resistance. This makes weight loss harder and increases the risk of metabolic conditions like type 2 diabetes.
💛 Signs & Symptoms of Imbalance:
• Strong cravings for sugar and refined carbs
• Difficulty losing weight, especially around the abdomen
• Energy crashes after meals
• Persistent hunger, even after eating
💛 How to Support:
• Balance your meals: Include a mix of lean protein, healthy fats, and high-fiber foods to keep blood sugar levels stable and reduce insulin spikes.
• Reduce sugar intake: Limiting refined carbs, sugary beverages, and processed snacks can lower insulin demands.
• Exercise regularly: Both aerobic exercise (e.g., walking, cycling) and strength training improve insulin sensitivity and help muscles efficiently use glucose.
• Improve sleep quality: Poor sleep increases insulin resistance and disrupts metabolic hormones. Aim for 7–8 hours of consistent, restful sleep.
• Use timing to your advantage: Consuming carbohydrates post-workout optimizes glucose uptake by muscles, reducing the risk of fat storage.
💛 Supplements that may help:
• Berberine: A natural compound that supports blood sugar control and enhances insulin sensitivity (Source).
• Chromium: An essential trace mineral that aids in blood glucose regulation.
• Magnesium: Plays a crucial role in glucose metabolism and insulin signalling.
• Inositol (Myo-inositol): Especially beneficial for insulin sensitivity in people with metabolic syndrome or PCOS.

Tumblr media
Dottie invites you to decorate an easter egg with them!
That's right! All you have to do is design an easter egg! It can be as complex or simple as you want! The important part is to have fun!
Every person that submits an egg from today Thursday 28 to the next Thursday 4 will get a free basic MYO slot!
What does that mean?
Each person will be able to design their own milagro! With two rules in mind, milagros should be based on the egg submitted, so be sure to think abt that when decorating! And they may only have basic traits as per the guide below:
Tumblr media
Now three winners will be picked! Three on here and three on Toyhouse!
Those six will be able to include rare traits in their design! But don't worry, there'll be plenty more opportunities!
Lastly, you can submit your egg as a reblog! Just remember the deadline!

Some of the free bicorn designs I've given away. I do a giveaway about once a year, with Patrons having access to pre-claims as well as the opportunity to grab more than one design. Additionally, there is a MYO base available on Itch, if you'd like to make your own.
Tumblr is a little silly about including links with new posts, so I will try to go back and add them later. Until then, Patreon and Itch can be accessed through my pinned post. <3

The Essence of Buddhist Mantras
The philosophy behind Buddhist chanting
Buddhist chanting is not merely a ritualistic practice; it's an exercise that connects you to the universal truths of existence. Rooted in the teachings of the Buddha, these chants drive you away from negative energies, emotions, and states of mind that guide you towards a deeper understanding of yourself and the universe.
The role of mantras in meditation and enlightenment
Mantras play a vital role in Buddhist meditation, aiding in concentration, mindfulness, and inner transformation. By repeating a specific Buddha mantra, the practitioner can enter a state of focused awareness, transcending the chatter of the mind. When you chant this repetitively, it creates a frequency that aligns with the natural vibrations of the body and mind and leads to a state of harmony and enlightenment. Whether it's the calming "Om Mani Padme Hum" or the empowering Buddha mantra for success, each chant has a unique purpose and effect.
The essence of Buddhist mantras lies in their ability to cultivate compassion, wisdom, and mindfulness. These three virtues are central to Buddhist philosophy and practice. Mantras like the Tara mantra are chanted with devoted love and compassion, while others like the Buddhist mantra for protection invoke wisdom and insight. he focused recitation of mantras fosters mindfulness, the practise of being fully present and involved with the present moment.
9 essential Buddhist mantras for life concerns
There are various Buddhist practices for specific purposes. It may help you in case of various needs, from healing and prosperity to love and spiritual growth.
1. Om Mani Padme Hum
Known as the "Universal Mantra," "Om Mani Padme Hum" is one of the most recognized Buddhist mantras that focuses on giving and receiving compassion, contributing to a mantra for happiness and contentment. This in turn, helps you be happier in life and fosters a sense of contentment and overall wellbeing.
2. Om Tara Tuttare Ture Soha
The Tara Mantra, "Om Tara Tuttare Ture Soha," is a chant dedicated to the female Bodhisattva Tara. It helps to get through obstacles of relationships, be more emotionally balanced and find deep connection with your inner self. The Tara mantra benefits include emotional healing and spiritual growth.
3. Buddhist Kuber mantra
Regularly chanting the Kuber mantra, "Om Zambala Zalendhraye Soha" or the Buddha mantra for success, helps you attract wealth, prosperity and abundance in life. It is not just about attracting wealth; it's also about developing financial wisdom which means you can make smarter decisions related to money.
4. Tayata Om mantra
Chanting the Medicine Buddha Mantra, “Tayata Om Bekanze Bekanze Maha Bekanze Radza Samudgate Soha” cleanses negativity, helps you heal from past trauma as well as serves as a way to detach yourself from disturbing incidents and clears you way to enlightenment.
5. Amitabha Buddha mantra
Chanting the Rebirth Mantra, "Om Ami Dewa Hrih" mantra helps to clear mental clutter, get clarity of goals in life so that you can focus on what really matters and take action to achieve them more effectively.
6. Vajra Guru mantra
Chanting "Om Ah Hum Vajra Guru Padma Siddhi Hum" not only helps you gain inner sense of peace and calm but also it deepens your meditation practice which enhances concentration and helps you be more mindful in your daily life. It clears away negative energy that may impede your success amd protects you against physical, emotional and spiritual harm.
Additionally, it might also help you in losing weight as it may promote mindful eating. However, it's important to note that this will be effective when you combine it with lifestyle changes, discipline and regular exercise.
7. Lotus Sutra mantra
The chant, "Nam Myo Ho Renge Kyo" captures the essence of Buddhism, it has the ability to transform any suffering in life, be it regarding sickness, old age or something else. It helps you overcome fear and gives you strength to face any problems or difficulties.
8. White Tara mantra
'Om Tuttare Ture Ture Ayush Punya, Mama Jnana Kuru, Pushtim Svaha' is a Tibetan mantra which is linked to a good health and long life. It is frequently sung with good intentions for the benefit of others and spreads positivity.
9. Shakyamuni mantra
Chant “Om Muni Muni Mahamuni Shakyamuniye Svaha Om” as it shields you from harmful energies and negative emotions, fostering a sense of safety and protection. Additionally, it soothes the mind and helps you get over anxiety and stress.
Understanding the life of Buddha and his teachings is central to appreciating the depth of Buddhist mantras. His journey to enlightenment and the principles he taught provide the foundation for the various chants and their applications in daily life.

MINA Harper's BAZAAR June 2024 issue
© Minami Myo Weibo
translation by MarisaTheCube
"Mina of TWICE poses against the shutters on a balcony offering a wide view of Paris, with a line of Hausmann-style buildings.
“I’ve wanted to try doing a fashion shoot for a magazine overseas. And the setting is Paris, which I love! The city’s buildings and the townscape are so beautiful, so it would make for a wonderful shoot, so I’ve been really looking forward to it.” When looking at a photo of herself dissolving into the Parisian scenery, a happy expression comes over her face. As the shoot continues, Mina changes into countless outfits and quickly captures their design, moving actively or standing still with a mature mood. Her movements are widely varied, just like a top model.
“Paris is known for its classic cityscape, but the people living there are also wonderful. There’s a calm atmosphere, and I admire the way people spend time at cafes, use chic fashion in their own ways, and dress up at night to enjoy the nightlife. When I first visited Paris, I was looking forward to sightseeing. I was able to go see the outside of the Louvre, but there wasn’t time to go inside, so I was looking forward to going there the next time. If I had an opportunity to stay longer, there are so many other plans I would want to do, like getting up in the morning and going to a café, going to the market if the weather was nice – spending time here as though I lived here,” she says with a sparkle in her eye.
In order to embody Mina’s dream plan, the shoot this time is themed as if Mina was studying abroad in Paris for a short time during the summer season. She wears Fendi’s summer collection in a bourgeois-chic apartment to express the feeling of spending time freely in the summer.
“The Fendi summer collection that I wore for the shoot this time has a fresh style of Western clothing and swimwear. When you think of swimwear, you often get the image that it’s only worn at places like the beach or the pool. But if you wear a jacket and skirt or denim pants over it, you can wear it around town, and it’s very new and cool. My personal favorite is the combination of a short jacket and striped skirt with swimwear.”
Mina travels around the world as a member of TWICE. In 2023, the group embarked on their fifth world tour, becoming the first girl group to perform at stadiums in Japan, and set records for days in a row, including setting the record for the first girl group to hold a sold-out performance at LA’s SoFi Stadium. The group’s tour is ongoing, and they are currently scheduled to hold a performance at Nissan Stadium, where they will be the first overseas female artists to perform. Mina is enthusiastic, saying, “It will be a challenge for us.”
Furthermore, last year, she began unit activities with MISAMO. “The three of us - Sana-chan, Momo-chan, and I – have been working as hard as we can to support each other. This year, we hope to go on tour for the album we released as MISAMO.”
Mina shows off her beautiful new faces one after another, both as a member of the world-famous girl group that captivates audiences with their amazing live performances, and as a model participating in fashion shoots as a brand muse. In January of this year, she attended Fendi’s couture collection as a guest, and made her show debut. She expressed that she was nervous about going to the show alone, but said, “Personally, I love Fendi, so I was even more excited for that. I bought my first knitwear a few years ago, and thought it was really cool and comfortable. After that, I bought a bag, and now I use it regularly. Personally, I like the “Peekaboo” collection. Fendi generally has very feminine collections, but they also debut some very imaginative items, so I’m always looking forward to surprises.”
As mentioned, this was Mina’s first time coming to Paris alone for a fashion shoot since her debut. She gave the impression of a female image that was simultaneously cute, intellectual, and elegant. What kind of expression will she show in her next fashion shoot? We can’t take our eyes off Mina as she continues to put forth effort and gain experience to update her form.
Mina is a member of the nine-member girl group TWICE, who are scheduled to perform at Nissan Stadium this year. Also, last year, she formed MISAMO with fellow Japanese members Sana and Momo and began unit activities."

Two loudspeakers, as big as the men carrying them, are brought to the rocky hilltop. Some 800m below, in the town of Hpasang, lies a sprawling Myanmar army base.
It’s a blisteringly hot day - above 40C - and behind, on bamboo poles, more young resistance fighters carry a large, heavy battery pack and amplifier. Leading the ascent is Nay Myo Zin, a former army captain who, after 12 years in the military, defected to the resistance.
With his dark green camouflage jacket draped over one shoulder, he has the air of a performer about to take the stage. He is here to urge the soldiers in the base below, who are loyal to the country’s ruling military, to switch sides.
In this jungle deep in Karenni state in the east of Myanmar, two forces face each other in a fight that has, in one way or another, been going on for decades. But the rapid advances by the resistance in recent months indicate that this time they may have the advantage.
The South East Asian nation is at a crossroads - after decades of military rule and brutal repression, ethnic groups, along with a new army of young insurgents, have brought the dictatorship to crisis point.
In the past seven months, somewhere between half and two-thirds of the country has fallen to the resistance. Tens of thousands of people have been killed, including many children, since the military seized power in a coup in 2021. Some 2.5 million have been displaced, and the military facing an unprecedented challenge to its rule and in an attempt to thwart the growing resistance regularly bombs civilians, schools and churches from its warplanes (the resistance has none).
Before Nay Myo Zin’s sound equipment is switched on, the army opens fire on his position.
Undeterred, with a flick of the switch and microphone in hand, he bellows: “Everyone, cease fire! Cease fire, please. Just listen for five minutes, 10 minutes.” Somewhat surprisingly, the barrage stops.
He tells them of the 4,000 soldiers who surrendered to the opposition in northern Shan State, and the recent insurgent drone attacks on military buildings in the country’s capital Nay Pyi Taw. The message is, we are winning, your regime is falling, it is time to give up.
Here in Hpasang and across Karenni state, across much of the country, battles and stalemates have taken hold as a great rolling rebellion threatens the rule of the military junta. The military coup in 2021 brought an end to the elected civilian government, and its leader Aung San Suu Kyi remains imprisoned, along with other political leaders.
Yet this is an under-reported conflict - with much of the world’s attention on Ukraine and the Israel-Gaza conflict. There is no press freedom, foreign journalists are rarely allowed to enter officially and when they do are heavily monitored. There is no way to hear the resistance side of this story through government approved visits.
We travelled into Myanmar and spent a month in the east of the country living alongside resistance groups fighting across Karenni State, which borders Thailand, and Shan state, which borders China.
We travelled on jungle tracks and backroads, to front lines where the military has been cut off and surrounded for weeks, where like in Hpasang, the fighters have the high ground. In others, such as Moebye, further north, the opposition has suffered heavy losses as it attempted direct assaults across heavily mined ground. There, and in Loikaw, the state capital, the strength of the rebellion and its limitations are in plain view.
In Hpasang, the resistance has been playing a waiting game, confident that they have the upper hand. Some 80 soldiers have been trapped inside the base for more than a month, with about 100 more believed to be dead or injured.
Up on the hilltop, via his loudspeaker, Nay Myo Zin makes the case for surrender: “We have surrounded you. There is no possibility of a helicopter coming. Ground troops support? No. You have time today to decide whether to switch to the people’s side.”
There’s silence from the military camp below.
Nay Myo Zin urges them to abandon Min Aung Hlaing, the general in charge of the ruling junta.
“All your lives will surely be spared. This is the highest promise that I can give. So, don’t be foolish. Would you rather protect tyrant Min Aung Hlaing’s unjustifiable wealth until your last breath? Now, I am waiting to welcome you.”
Moments pass, there is only the sound of flies buzzing on the hilltop, as perhaps the junta forces are considering their response. It is no easy decision, if they surrender and are returned to military-controlled areas, they will probably be sentenced to death.
Their answer comes loudly; definitively. They again fire on the rocky outpost, the insurgents begin to duck for cover. There will be no surrender today.
Nay Myo Zin continues broadcasting, regardless. To his side, on a radio, the commander of the operation to capture the base adopts a different approach. On the same frequency as the military men, he exchanges insults with them.
In an onslaught of slurs, he accuses them of being Min Aung Hlaing’s guard dogs, and of being unfaithful to their country.
The soldiers respond with insults of their own. Cut off from the resupply of men and food, they stand their ground, firm in their belief that it is the military’s right - its destiny - to rule the country.
The ideological gulf between both sides is unbridgeable.
The carrot and stick approach continues for another 30 minutes or so, before the resistance fighters withdraw.
In his enthusiastic appeal for surrender Nay Myo Zin has inadvertently given away the men’s position (“I’m 400 yards away beside the loudspeakers,” he said), and they are worried about an artillery or mortar strike. Later that evening, the hillside takes a direct hit, without injuries.
This is more than just an ideological battle, it is a generational war. The young against the establishment, a new order fighting to break free from a tenacious old order. The connected versus a disconnected elite. The same youth who heard tales of failed revolutions and who have decided now is their time.
After half a century of military rule, Myanmar enjoyed a brief experiment with democracy starting in 2015 under Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy.
For many young people those years, though not without deep problems, marked an all-too-short golden age of freedom. The ballot box had failed them, then peaceful protest in the wake of the coup was met with killings and arrests. Many of those fighting told us there had been no alternative but to take up arms.
Thousands have abandoned studies and careers in major cities such as Yangon - doctors, mathematicians, martial arts fighters - and fled the cities to join established ethnic and resistance groups that had long opposed military rule.
On this front, all the fighters are under 25.
Nam Ree, a 22-year-old with the Karenni Nationalities Defence Force, KNDF, explains why he joined the resistance.
“The dogs [a commonly used insult for the military] have been unjust. They carried out an unlawful military coup. We, the youth, are discontented with it,” he says.
He is wearing flip flops, blue nail varnish, faded combat trousers and ammo belt across a Barcelona FC top. Unlike most of the men around him, he has a ballistic helmet. No-one has body armour.
The KNDF are a new force of young fighters and commanders which appeared after the coup. Ethnic armed groups have been fighting against the military in Karenni - also known as Kayah state - for decades. But the KNDF has brought them unity and battlefield success.
The tide turned against the junta on 27 October last year when an alliance of groups in the north of the country overran military positions and border crossings. Dozens more towns across the country have fallen since then into the hands of the armed opposition. The military still controls the main cities, but is losing control of the countryside and Myanmar’s borders.
The KNDF says it, and other insurgent groups, now control 90% of the Karenni state. It may be the smallest in the country but it has become a hardcore centre of resistance.
Under the shade of a mango orchard sits the powerfully built, tattooed KNDF deputy commander, Maui Pho Thaike. An environmentalist who studied in the United States, he first picked up a gun three years ago.
He doesn’t recognise the military junta as a government, it is the oppressor of the country’s many ethnic regions, he says.
He says the whole country is now fighting the army.
“The strategies are changing. All the attacks are now co-ordinated,” he says.
The KNDF has no lack of fighters, but ammunition and weapons are in desperately short supply. Mostly the insurgency is funded by donations from the country’s diaspora.
“We do have enough heart, we do have enough morale, we do have enough humanity. That's the way we're going to defeat them,” Maui says.
A tattoo on his hand reads “free thinker” - from another time, when Myanmar was briefly on its thwarted move to democracy. Are you still a free thinker, I ask him. “In this uniform, no,” he replies. “But without this uniform, I’m a free man. And that’s our dream. We’ll create it again.”
To enter Myanmar is to travel not just to a forgotten war, but to country severed from the outside world. Much of the mobile phone network, internet and electricity has been cut off in Karenni state. The military may be on the back foot but their remaining bases control the main roads through the state.
A 60km (37 mile) drive from Hpasang further north to the town of Demoso took more than 10 hours across rutted dirt tracks, over hills and through rivers and valleys.
We arrived to the aftermath of a failed assault on a military base in the nearby town of Moebye, in which 27 members of the resistance had been killed.
In a jungle hospital, young men from the KNDF lie on hospital beds on dirt floors. Some smile and give a thumbs up, most are missing limbs.
Aung Ngle, 23, has a horribly swollen left leg after taking shrapnel to his femoral artery in the attack on the base. He is too ill to talk, but as he begins to weep, three of his comrades come to him, holding and comforting him. They won’t be able to operate. He will have to make the long journey to Thailand for further treatment. I ask a doctor if he will survive. “He will be fine,” he says. “But right now I think he’s depressed because he can’t fight anymore.”
In many respects, this is a conflict from another age, brutal and intimate. The fighting in Moebye lasted for days, at close quarters, with uphill frontal infantry assaults on the military’s bunkers.
One man has multiple injuries to his hands, legs and stomach. They were caused by a hand grenade, he says. They had gone to retrieve a commander who had been hit in the leg when it came in. “It was at close range - about 30ft,” he says.
The war has a slow ferocity, as we saw for ourselves when we travelled further north into southern Shan state, towards the town of Hsihseng. Near there, a counter-offensive was underway as the military tried to capture the route to Loikaw, the state capital, which also remains contested.
It is not their state, but the KNDF is in the lead under the command of a fighter called Darthawr. He, like many of his men, has been injured in previous attacks and a dark red scar peeks out from under the arm of his T-shirt.
“Defending this place for us is like defending our home,” he tells me. He is in shorts and flip flops and neither he nor his men have body armour. Nor do we.
As we stand on a low hilltop by a banana grove, he points out the military’s positions, 1.5km (0.9 miles) away. Shells begin landing nearby and there is a scramble to some shallow trenches. The shells, likely mortars, keep coming in, getting closer. A sustained exchange of automatic gunfire can be heard at close range - it sounds like the soldiers are far closer than previously thought.
It quickly becomes apparent that a group of soldiers is making its way through a minefield to our position. We leave, driving at speed as the shelling continues, a mortar striking the road directly ahead of the vehicles.
“Their troops got injured, and that’s why they are randomly shooting everywhere,” Darthawr explained.
At a graduation ceremony on a baked-hard dirt parade ground cleared in the jungle, rank after rank of new recruits march past in formation. They salute the KNDF leadership, their rubber-soled canvas boots stamping up the dust. The young men and women - many just turned 18 - march to the beat of a song in English, “Warrior”. Its lyrics:
I am last to leave, but the first to go
Lord, make me dead before you make me old
I am a Soldier and I'm marching on
I am a warrior and this is my song
There are more than 500 - a record number of recruits. The ranks have been swollen after the junta, running short of men, enacted a conscription decree which sent young people in their hundreds fleeing to insurgent territory to join the revolutionary cause.
The last time I saw the troops, they were training with bamboo rifles. Now they have the real thing.
Their commander, Maui tells me that there isn’t much time for training. “Our strategy is like, we organised one month training, intensive training, then we go to fight.”
As the ceremony ends the mood is wild. A young rapper, MC Kayar Lay, who also graduated that day sends the fresh recruits into a frenzy of dancing and celebration.
It is difficult to predict where the uprising will lead. For both sides, this is an existential war and one increasingly marked by bloodshed and bitterness. There appears to be no going back.
After three and a half weeks, we were back in Hpasang. The army base, which had been about to be stormed by the resistance when I left, remained standing.
The military had tried to send in reinforcements - some 100 men - but in a battle with the insurgents, 57 were captured, the rest fled or were killed.
The army failed to resupply the base but the encounter with the opposition forces had another consequence. It meant armed revolutionaries' ammunition was depleted - and they no longer were able mount an attack on the outpost.
The day before we arrived, army war planes had bombed the hilltop overlooking Hpasang, killing three of the young fighters we had met earlier, and injuring 10.
Before, there had been music and singing from their positions on the banks of the wide Salween River, an almost relaxed willingness to wait out their enemy.
But now the mood had darkened - more appeals for surrender seemed unlikely. It would now be a battle to the death.

Vibez got banned from Terras for telling the mods they shouldn’t be posting art of characters who are related to BDSM (talking about smile demons, of course)
Couldn’t access the original work Tycho posted bc I’m not in the server anymore but here’s the compiled screens https://imgur.com/a/RWCH5KZ
yeah this is fucking crazy
first of all, CW for sexual/suggestive themes, BDSM, latex, smile demons, the links provided in this post show receipts of the claims made here and thus have NSFW/BDSM imagery. this is your warning.
link provided
my own imgur link with more screenshots (includes everything linked here and more so dont just rely on the images linked in the text body tyyy)
so, somewhat recently a few terra staff have been getting pretty invested with smile demons, including xil, florian, keldeosknight, and tycho (xil is apparently even on staff in smile demons!)
smile demons has a huge and sordid history, there's a PSA on them somewhere that i dont feel like digging for, as well as accusations they dont take reports of harassment seriously
as for actually verifiable stuff, smile demons have pretty sexual connotations in general, even down to the original MYO art featuring leather gear and several smile demons having leather and BDSM features (in imgur gallery), as well as one of the species fucking mascots having some pretty big sexual themes!
so this is all fine and dandy until tonight, when xil posts an emoji of their smile demon that has BDSM themes and Tycho shortly after posts a drawing of that smile demon. notably, a minor originally replied to xil's emoticon knowing the character by name
public enemy #1 vibez takes issue with this and DMs Tycho, taking issue with the fact that smile demons are allowed to be freely posted yet reference images are deemed too unsavory
Tumblr media
this leads to a back and forth where tycho sends vibez to talk to xil directly about it, and xil tries to argue that leather fetish gear totally isnt sexual guys and smile demons are perfectly fine to talk/post about in terra server despite all the fetish shit heavily associated with it (seriously, check the imgur and look at this whole argument its completely idiotic)
something i find especially funny to note, xil says in the back and forth that they "dont use the masked version" and "dont use it anywhere, its just on her th," however, they have linked the character's toyhouse profile in the lounge (with a minor even replying to them in this screenshot!) and within this toyhouse profile, NONE OF THE IMAGES ARE MATURE LOCKED
another fun side note is that florian (at age 17) commissioned another minor (age 16) to draw the BDSM demon, including the masked version as a reference. im not gonna paint this like a grooming thing because thats incredibly stupid, but i will say that this just really goes to show how unsafe this species is for minors that theyre able to participate with a species and own characters that heavily feature these themes.
so after vibez' chat with xil, tycho says that actually vibez was harrassing xil and boom. thats the straw that broke the camel's back and allowed them to swiftly smack them with a ban. feel however you wanna feel about vibez, but i think its a bit crazy for them to get banned for rightfully pointing out that smile demons shouldnt be posted in terras. even vibez admits they were pretty aggro about things lately
and i think thats where the story ends for now, moral of it all is stay the fuck away from smile demons and that terra staff continue to be incredibly irresponsible with their community, especially around minors.
