speaking of the games: nightmares! his nightmares dont happen as often as katniss' but they do happen. usually, its some variation of you being reaped instead of katniss and him trying his best to save you from all the horrors that the gamemakers thrust upon you but ultimately failing

he wakes up and immediately pulls you into his lap and just. holds you. he needs the warmth and the weight to remind himself that you're here, you're with him, you're safe

anyways here's more sad stuff

when the capitol got him and hijacked him, they attacked his memories of you. they made it seem like you hated him and used him and just were a terrible person.

when he first sees you after he gets rescued, he backs into a wall and just stares at you, crying. he whispers, "please. don't hurt me." and your heart breaks into a million pieces

after they un-hijack him (is that what it is?) he realizes that you never would hurt him. it was all the capitol. you two sit together on the steps of his house in the victors village and play real or not real one last time.

"real or not real. you love me." peeta's warm hand over yours chases the cold away. you look into the eyes of the boy who's been through so much and still made it out pure and sweet. the boy who still believes in kindness and give the softest of love. the boy who loves you, despite everything that the capitol forced him to believe. you lean up and press a soft kiss to his temple.

"real. always real."

How old was Katniss when she gave birth to her daughter?

I know that canon is somewhere around 30-32 but my soul wants it to be 35. Probably because I personally consider 35 to be the best age to get pregnant by. I also like the idea of K&P having elementary-aged kids while they're in their 40s. 40 is such a hot age, its also such a good age to be parents IMO. 40 is just great.

How many years apart are they in age?

I picture them as being 4 years apart at the maximum. I think that makes sense for the epilogue ages we get hinted at. Toddler is 1-3 so the boy is somewhere in that range while the girl is between 4-7. I think that makes sense.

Your headcanon for their name?

I'm a strong believer in Willow and Rye. Those names just sound so Twelve to me. There's also something 'traditional' about those names, in that they're callbacks to Katniss and Peeta's own families (that is assuming the baker names all the kids after bread/bread-related/adjacent items). It's a way of honoring the dead, which I think is extremely important to them.

Who gets the singing and art skill from their parent?

I'm the controversial everlarker. I don't love stories where one kid is super Peeta-like and the other is super Katniss-like. In my experience kids aren't like that, they don't typically take after their parents' talents/hobbies/skills. I think each kid might have a special bond with either parent surrounding one of these skills but I think it's unrealistic to expect one of them to be super artsy and the other to be super outdoorsy. I just don't see it. I also think Katniss and Peeta would love it if their kids pursued other interests that are in no way connected to their own just because that is something they never got the chance to explore at all. I might be biased by my own family (my family has lived through war and military occupation), but because of that context I see Katniss and Peeta being those parents who go all out for every single interest their kids have. Oh, this summer little Rye is into swimming? It's swim world now baby. Little Willow wants to do soccer? The whole family has jerseys now. I don't think there's anything wrong or bad about the kids doing their parents' hobbies or anything like that - I just think it's unlikely they would inherit so much from their parents. I think both kids have wonderful memories of baking and painting with Dad as well as hunting, camping, and singing with Mom. I don't think either of them is necessarily amazing at those skills nor do I think Katniss and Peeta push them in that direction because one way or another all those skills were cultivated from a need to survive. Peeta bakes for work but also paints for therapy. Katniss hunted to survive and also sang for the emotional value she got out of it. These hobbies/skills have their baggage to them. I think that's something to keep in mind. Hell, my grandpa is a hunter, grew up a hunter, and used to hunt during the war so my family could eat something other than rations. None of us know how to hunt. It's something he decided he didn't want to trouble us with. There's baggage there.

Bonus question: please give recs of your fav everlark post-Mockingjay fanfic.

I am the worst for fic recommendations because I never remember the titles of anything. Rn I can recommend my friend @vasilissadragomir 's fic Us Among The Living (it is very good and she puts so much love and care into it!!) and my own growing together fic which is (I swear) going to be updated soon. Other than that I'd have to go on a hunting spree myself to figure out the names of stuff lol.

Buffys a huge fan of Wonder Woman: Amazonia bc she's an academic little dweeb and really likes alternate history stories! Second Genesis is also a favorite of hers. She really likes stories that especially focus on how Diana is often torn between two worlds, wanting to be true to her Amazonian nature but also her role as an ambassador to humans. It makes Buffy feel very seen and she compares it to her own frustrations a lot!

She tells her cheer friends her favorite movies are Clueless and Can't Buy Me Love. She tells the boys her favorites are Batman Returns and Turtles: The Original Movie. She tells neither group of her love for The Crow, Tank Girl and The Craft.

Her favorites shows are Wonder Woman, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Buffy the Vampire Slayer!

She has an issue of Wonder Woman signed by Lynda Carter, courtesy of her dad from a show he was working on

Her favorite food to cook is roast chicken over veggies, but her favorite to eat is pasta with homemade sauce ( preferably vodka sauce ) and crusty bread. She hates pudding and anything with an overly "gloopy" texture and she likes the taste of things like Cheetos, but hates the sensation of dust all over her fingers so she rarely eats them.

FUN FACTZ

She's anemic and has a tendency to shove her death cold hands up her friends' shirts to scare them ( and siphon heat )

She's a flyer on her cheer squad and actually writes a lot of the cheers, but especially the taunts and battle cheers. It's a good outlet for her to get out her negative emotions

She's kind of a doormat and it's ironically being friends with the boys that starts to remedy that for her, in a way. Yes, they can be shitty, but they also make her feel more comfortable in her own interests and sometimes they're SO intolerable that she HAS to snap at them. This also leads to her standing up to her cheer friends more!

At the start of the story, she's dating Mitch ( one of the guys that yeeted the boys out of the theater, also a football player in this ) as part of a set up with two other cheerleaders, Brittany and Britney. She's not really into him. He's not really into her. They eventually break it off when they realize this because they'd been protecting each other's feelings the whole time.

Certified Parent Charmer. If any of her friends are ever worried that their parents will say no to them, send in the Buffy. She'll butter em up into saying yes.

Loves slumber parties, they're her favorite activity ever. She gets pizza money from her dad, bakes cookies, decorates, she really goes all out

Smells like you just walked into a Victoria's Secret. Fruity, lightly floral, sweet. Overall very nice

She gets her license at 17 and saves up to buy a red pick up truck with a bench seat. It's practically a death trap, but it's her baby and she loves driving people around in it. She named it Lady Macbeth!

She's incredibly smart and a straight A student. She lets people assume she's dumb because she's pretty and a cheerleader, but she's really not! She's genuinely very passionate about her academics.

so, couple things that come into play here that i think are interesting

warning: beyond this point will contain lengthy unnecessary, unasked for, unwarranted & disorganized reaching, theories, wishful delusional thinking & dissection. i am a swiftie at heart so it’s a reflex to look too much into cryptic behavior lol

i’m also aware that omens x chase fans are very niche & nobody actually cares what i have to say about this topic but whatever 🥲💔 i just need to get this out 🥲

1 - i have known for a while that at least noah knows about / is a fan of chase atlantic. i believe he liked a tweet about them a while ago, when chase was doing a livestream i think? & he’s posted about them before, example here:

whether or not chase knows about bad omens i’m not sure but they probably do now at least

2 - Omens & Chase are under the same management company! They’re both under MDDN, so they’re at least in the same circles

3 - as much as i’d KILLLLL to hear chase feature on bad decisions i unfortunately don’t think noah would be down for it (i think he’s stated before he’s not open to features on bad omens’ discography ?? but i could be mistaken) - so the more likely scenario in the realm of (unrealistic) features would be noah featuring on a chase song

4 - the Bad Omens official tiktok account has only reposted 6 videos total, besides cas’ & the other 5 were specifically about the band - with how they handle their social media i find it interesting that they’d do that

also

obviously Kras is in CA so them reposting it isn’t out of the ordinary BUT both band accounts reposted the same day (even tho the video itself was posted 6 days ago, they both reposted the next day) - again just interesting

5 - the audio on the tiktok was mamacita so that begs the question that if there WERE to be a collab … would it be noah featuring on mamacita …………. bc the thought of that …. makes my head spin 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 (we also been knew that noah’s music taste is vast, so him being interested in / open to featuring on a different genre track, especially of a band he likes, isn’t THAT crazy to imagine)

6 - however the caption cas’ tiktok was something like “christian said that if you use this filter he’ll show you his verse on mamacita” so that could mean a couple things IF a collab is being teased

a - it’s not actually kras’ verse it’s noah’s

b - kras’ verse could be first & noah’s 2nd (😵‍💫)

c - they’re hinting at a feature on another song on chase’s upcoming album

d - there is no collab & i’m a clown for believing that there could be (it’s this one)

7 - we know chase is open to having features from different genres & are pretty lax about who they work with (& lax in general)

8 - i’m unsure how well the collab would be received - i think noah featuring on chase would go over significantly better than the other way around but still idk - chase’ fanbase seems a lot more chill than omens

REGARDLESS i fear for chase if they collab bc [a lot of] bad omens fans are mean, judgy & ruthless especially about artists outside of metal/metalcore. chase’s fandom is fairly chill (in my experience) & unfortunately i honestly think any interaction with bad omens would bring a lot of unnecessary drama & hate to them :///// and i can smell the “bad omens is selling out” accusations from here

9 - again i think the repost was really interesting & unusual for their normal social media activity/strategy & so the fact that it’s so out of the ordinary + subtle + sneaky ON TOP OF ALLL of those other factors ^ has got me extremely intrigued

10 - that all being said ……. unfortunately as you touched on, Noah is a troll at heart, so he could very well just be causing mischief - for what reason, nobody knows - also choosing that tiktok was so random ?? so ?? [especially since it was cas’ tiktok, not chase or even their members??]

i’m interested to see if there’s any other sneaky interactions between them moving forward - noah loves taylor swift so he may be taking a page or 2 from her book & starting to get more cryptic as their fanbase expands ?? lol

here are my notes from reading chapters 6-10 of tbosas <3 this includes quotes I particularly picked out/thoughts as I read! if you want to discuss anything, pls send any thoughts!

CHAPTER 6

"Besides the poor thing is already attached to me." (Pg. 76) - CORYO! This is him talking to Sejanus when Sejanus mentions trading tributes. This is a crazy thing to say.

I just wrote down that Sejanus' eyes fill with tears in this scene and it made me feel sad.

"It's built into us as human beings...," (Pg. 76) - Sejanus about protecting children. So it's just really blatant (it was already but this strengthens it) how different Sejanus views the world in comparison to Coryo, but like there are definitely moments Coryo's thoughts align to Sejanus' ideals? Hm.

Bread Pudding was one of Coryo's fav foods.

"your own father used to say those people only drank water because it didn't rain blood," (Pg. 77) - That's fucking wild. Ouch! Grandma'am to Coriolanus, here.

Crispus Demigloss - History Professor

"With the exception of Livia Cardew who made it clear she thought he had cheated and should be dismissed as a mentor immediately..." (Pg. 79) - Livia just has a bone to pick with Coryo, I can't believe he marries her like I get it but god, she's annoying.

Festus is in Coryo's inner circle 'since birth.'

"Always so loud, always socking people..." (Pg. 82) - this is about Arachne and I just thought it was funny.

I really loved the classroom scenes and seeing more of the other mentors/Coriolanus' peers, I think that would've been helpful in the film in terms of understanding the type of environment Coriolanus is in since he's known them all pretty much his whole life.

"He wanted to reach out and touch her face, to tell her that things were going to be all right," (Pg. 86) - Coriolanus about Lucy Gray.

Lucy Gray says she had two older siblings! She also tears up when talking and says bread pudding is also her favorite. Something I've had in my mind as I read is how genuine Lucy Gray is being, like...I feel as though she really is a bit of a mystery? I think she finds Coriolanus amusing at this point but also leans into the fact that he's the only one that can truly help her in this scenario? So she's using that to her advantage as well? Idk, someone talk to me on that hgdghd

'"Married?'" "'Why? Are you asking?...Because I think this could work.'" (Pg. 86) - GOD THIS KILLED ME, their flirting in the book is honestly so much better. Tom and Rachel have the chemistry to pull it off in the film, but some of this dialogue is way too good, I wish they kept this exchange closer to the book. Also he blushes.

Coriolanus ignores her flirting which is hilarious.

Coriolanus refers to Lucy Gray as 'my girl,' in the discussion to Gaul and the class. (Pg. 92)

"He was tougher than he looked, Sejanus Plinth," (Pg. 93) - I believe Coryo thinks this after Sejanus is basically talking back to Gaul about the inhumanity of things and here's this rare moment of Coriolanus admiring him.

"He was no common citizen -- he was a mentor!" (Pg. 95) - funny coryo, just this little bit of a role and superiority is already getting to his head.

"He gave a wink and a wave of the hand, " (pg. 95) - Coryo does this to get a little boy to come over and give food to Lucy Gray. Found it endearing and hilarious.

Mother of Pearl handled knife is what Arachne has (and is killed with?) what does mother of pearl symbolize hmmmm

CHAPTER 7

"He remembered the cameras streaming live to the Capitol audience," (Pg. 100) - this is at the moment of Arachne's death and wow. This part and Coriolanus' attempt at helping comes off so much more heartless here than compared to the film. In the film, it just feels like it's his instinct to help, but here he is actively thinking about how he's gonna be seen and how he doesn't want to be seen as weak for being terrified and staying back.

Coryo walks Clemmie home after this all :(

"That's how it was with him: The wash of blood, the whiz of bullets, the screams in the crowd all caused flashbacks to the worst moments of his childhood. Rebel boots pounding through the streets, he and the Grandma'am pinned down by gunfire, dying bodies twitching around them...his mother on the bloodstained bed...the stampedes during the food riots...the smashed faces, the moaning people...," (Pg. 101) - this entire section is crazy and really adds so much weight in the context of scene, why he handles it the way he does. Feel like it's this type of stuff that makes it so easy to connect him to Katniss. Idk, I feel like this passage is insanely important in understanding his trauma and that's been clear before this but wow.

Man he HATES Livia.

"near scalding water...," (Pg. 103) - hot shower Coryo to deal with anxiety, same!

"A painful sobbing made his chest ache, but then it passed, and he wasn't sure if it had to do with sorrow over her death or unhappiness over his own difficulties," (Pg. 103) - ouch! I think it's both reasonings, but even Coriolanus is unaware of his actual feelings.

"He felt strangely detached from the action, as if all his emotional reserve had been depleted by his brief outburst in the shower," (Pg. 105) - his handling of Arachne's death really shows how desensitized he is. He can't handle his more overwhelming feelings well.

Hippocrata Lunt - School Counselor

"In rhetoric class, she'd once attributed his inability to decipher the deeper meaning of a poem to the fact that he was too self-absorbed. The irony, coming from Livia, of all people!....Coriolanus to the rescue, Livia to the nearest exit," (Pg. 105) - funny Coryo but also this feels like a slight foreshadow as to how Coriolanus interprets Lucy Gray's songs?????

"It seemed pretty cold to scratch her name off the list like that," (Pg. 108) - am glad you have this moral view Coryo.

I really like Clemmie & Coriolanus' friendship, I wish we got more in the film. She's so nice to him :(

Also they nailed how the snakes look in the film, like that is OFF THE PAGE

"Hello there," (Pg. 110) - funny coryo

Interesting that Coryo puts his hand in first in the book! Also little to no hesitation! Huh.

CHAPTER 8

"Pus dyed bright pink, yellow, and blue dripped down her fingers," (Pg. 114) - That's cool tbh, wish they did this in the movie!

Coryo barely thinking of Clemmie right after the bite is a little funny.

I think Coriolanus learns about never lying from Dr. Gaul (like later once he's being mentored by her)

"Ghoulish section of the lab where the glass cases housed humans with animal parts grafted to their bodies," (Pg. 115) - I kinda wish this was more included in the film, there's so many grotesque things Suzanne describes that are so cruel and I wish they had the balls to include them in the film(s) because...wow.

Coryo dropped to the curb after getting out of the lab :(

"It was like the Hunger Games. Only they weren't district kids," (Pg. 116) - SUZANNEEEE THE IRONY THIS IS FUCKING INSANE, this is Coryo about how his classmates are getting hurt/dying and I just. The layers in this small statement are crazy.

Coryo pockets the hospital crackers.

He goes to the hospital for Clemmie, but I can't tell if it is out of his guilt or own kindness over Clemmie? Like it feels definitely like a mix, but he's also deeply overthinking about being blamed.

"Afraid of Dr. Gaul. Afraid of the Capitol. Afraid of everything," (Pg. 116) - see stuff like this is where you can come back to the base idea that Coriolanus is a product of his environment. He is just a kid too. I was taken aback a little over the afraid of the Capitol line. I'm coming to understand that when Coryo is experiencing more overwhelming emotions, he's somehow more...moral? At least right now. He feels the most 'normal.' I don't know there's a lot to say on this quote but this is what I have rn.

The only person he wants to talk to about what happened is Lucy Gray.

Pg. 120 is very interesting. He's with Lucy Gray, he's apologizing for the situation she's in, wishing he was like Sejanus, worrying that she's hating him. I'm conflicted, like does he mean this? I think he does because of the emotional state he's in, i'm just always questioning him fdkghdj. Lucy gray tells him not to quit, but obviously that's stemming more from her need of him to survive this, I assume?

"'You matter to me,' he insisted. The Capitol may not value her, but he did. Hadn't he just poured his heart out to her?" (Pg. 122) - Coryo has a sense of entitlement here, like what I'm gathering is he does mean those words towards her, but he's almost expecting something in return?

And with that above in this section Lucy Gray is described as seeming distant. She's not giving in to his admission? Idk, this whole part was odd!

Grades or Glory, Coryo they go hand in hand for you.

"Usually he avoided Persephone altogether, because he could never help wondering if she had known the ingredients of her wartime stew," (Pg. 123) - funny coryo

CHAPTER 9

"'Snow lands on top,' he said with so little conviction they had to laugh. It made him feel a bit more normal," (Pg. 126) - oh! Coryo and Tigris :(

He only starts to eat his food because it would please Tigris :(

Grandma'am pokes Coryo in the ribs while he practices singing for Arachne's funeral. Literally leaves bruises.

"'Tigris? I just remembered, I can't really sing.'" - (Pg. 127) - FUNNY FUCKING CORYO

"Coriolanus thought it was quite a display for Arachne, disproportionate to both her life and death, the latter of which could have been avoided if she'd refrained from being such an exhibitionist," (Pg. 128) - this really shouldn't of been funny but I did laugh.

Brandy's body on a crane is absolutely wild and again, should've been in the film! idc how dark it is, it gives such a direct message.

"He tried to imagine conducting himself under those circumstances, until he realized this was undoubtedly what Sejanus was doing, and snapped out of it," (Pg. 130) - that's crazy. Also this is the first Sejanus mention in a bit and it being this is so funny and also extremely perceptive of Coryo. He understands Sejanus through the general lens of 'empathetic, passionate but weak through that,' way.

"Maybe her gravestone could read, 'Casualty of Cheap Laughs,'" (Pg. 130) - CORYO

"Several people took the pained look on Coriolanus' face as sorrow at Arachne's death, when ironically, he felt like killing her all over again," (Pg. 131) - CORYO!!!!!!! That's actually really insane of him.

"'I hear we're having pie,'" (Pg. 131) - OH EVIL, this is Highbottom to Coriolanus, like this is after Highbottom ruined him eating pie at the reaping, WHAT THE FUCK

"Let the poeple talk. The chief mourner needed sustenance," (Pg. 131) - this is funny, but it's also really sad because he's justifying filling his plate more to himself than others.

"His usual gift for self-control was eroding," (Pg. 131) - yeah this is. Important.

"He wasn't crazy about the guy, but he didn't particularly want to see him punished,"" (Pg. 132) - this is about Sejanus and I can't help but think Coryo is really like. Always reiterated he's eh about Sejanus, he doesn't want to be like Sejanus, like it feels like he's repeating this a lot? And that's interesting. Like he's trying to convince himself of this.

"This further display of Dr. Gaul's callousness made him feel mutinous.He glanced over at Sejanus's plate," (Pg. 133) - oh my god, the immediate sentence about Sejanus after 'mutinous'????? Insane.

Coryo trying the turnstile back after he's gone through it (Pg. 135) man is so perceptive.

"Jittery mentor on a questionable field trip," (Pg. 136) - this is funny.

The ENTIRE page 138, Lucy Gray and Coryo's dialogue is just so good. Their flirting. He's so flirty! Coryo making fun of her silly expressions and Lucy Gray making fun of his vocab like.

"For a moment he laughed, forgetting where they were, how depressing the backdrop. For a moment there was just her smile, the musical cadence of her voice, and a hint of flirtation. Then the world exploded," (Pg. 138) - this is a beautiful little passage but god. The lightness in some of these convos with Lucy Gray and Coryo was missing from the movie. They got it in a few but the book really hammers in their flirtations so much better.

CHAPTER 10

"As the horrifying realization that he was burning to death overtook him...," (Pg. 141) - thought of Katniss.

Also he knew on instinct how to react to the bombs :(

Lucy Gray went back for him. the mental implications of her literally saving his life...that thing about him wanting to feel a certain love again...

"I'm not alone, he thought. I'm not in the arena. I'm safe," (Pg. 142) - Ironic a bit.

"'You missed bomb time,'" (Pg. 142) - CORYO

God the amount of deaths from the arena explosion hits so much harder here, much more gruesome in description too, ofc.

Coryo sticking up for Lysistrata when Grandma'am makes comments (Pg. 144).

"It's just the kind of story that catches fire," (Pg. 145) - HAHAHHAHA SUZANNE!!!

Vet for the tributes...yikes!

"If Clemensia died, would he disappear as well, the only witness?" (Pg. 148). Oh. Okay this feels very foreshadow-y as to what happens with Coriolanus later.

Sejanus brought him meatloaf sandwiches :(

"People were always saying he resembled his handsome father more every day, but for the first time, he could really see it," (Pg. 149) - Just jotted this down because of the father mention.

Pg. 150-151 - Coryo's thoughts bleeding from caring about Lucy Gray's state to himself and if he looked weak, that's all literally showing his mental complications through his stream of consciousness. It's a long quote, so I can post it separately but yeah. Interesting!

Sej's Ma sent casserole :(

"The truth was, he owed her everything," (Pg. 153) - I think that makes him uncomfy. Idk. But he says it multiple times that it's like...owing her.

"Chained girl, boy offering food," (Pg. 153) - This honestly made me think about Peeta giving that burnt bread to Katniss.

"He would always be in her debt," (Pg. 153) - Yeah, this is interesting, I don't know what to make of it yet. But I think he means this.

Lucy Gray says "I hope so too," in regards to Coriolanus saying he hopes he can repay her. and I just felt. hm.

"You could start by thinking I can actually win," (Pg. 153) - Lucy Gray is a lot different in this scene, she's almost impatient, to the point, not playing around and not as jokey or flirty as earlier. It's difficult to analyze her character through the eyes of Coriolanus but my perception at this point is that Coriolanus amuses her, and she's maybe intrigued by him, but of course she's more thinking about the games. And how he could help. He's an advantage. He's proved that without even trying.

Yes I’m taking the fact Nishinoya bit someone once and making it his thing fight me (actually please don’t) when he does bite you it’s in the comfort of just y’all two and he’ll nibble or just bite you softly it’s basically his version of a kiss. But don’t worry he has plenty of normal kisses which he’s completely fine with doing in public. Always holding hands. And always hugging. After a win or lost he’ll just walk or run depending on the match up to you and hug you and basically hold your hand all the way until you get back to Karasuno. Black Mass and AtYD are two of fav Remu stories, also. Tbf, nothing really beats Black Mass for me, though. I haven’t read the other ones you mentioned but I’ve added them to my TBR! (Just now realizing I haven’t read very many fics solely from Remus’ POV, which is a real tragedy.)

Here’s a couple others I really enjoyed:

Sweater Weather: I love this Remus so much. I haven’t read another fic where he’s physically the smaller one. His personality is just so sweet and very different from some of the other fics I’ve read.

Wading in Waist-High Water: baking Remus? Yes, please. He’s so completely oblivious and I can’t get over it. This fic had me giggling and kicking my feet the whole way through. I related a lot to some of the stuff Remus experienced and it was just a really cozy story.

(see? ffs) I'll re-read this one forever. the sweetest. I'm really looking forward to this writer's WIP too, my friends @industrations and @assclaptherapy have been violently and aggressively threatening @solmussa and i to read it on a regular basis.

Sweater Weather is genuinely my ultimate comfort fic. found family vibes to the extreme, everytime i read it i feel like I'm there, in the kitchen with them all or supporting them with a tub of ice cream in the living room watching a game, y'know? and honestly, there's nothing that i love more than feeling safe and happy when I'm reading something. so its perfection.

have you read Not another band au by thelovelyzee? that's a good one for a Remus POV - i cant remember if i mentioned that one before but there are some fantastic moments in that, plus the playlist is top top top tier.

I just finished making an animatic about Haymitch w the song “Bug Like an Angel” by Mitski, but Alight Motion is being fucking stupid and won't let me export shit. So in the meantime I’m gonna be breaking down the lyrics of the song and how it connects back to everyone’s favorite sad clown.

There's a bug like an angel stuck to the bottom of my glass with a little bit left

If we wanna follow the religious themes of this song, this could connect to Lucifer, a fallen angel, and the singer. They were both good and well-adjusted people, but became gross and bad or smth after “falling into temptation” (in the singer's case, becoming addicted to alcohol). Haymitch is a very smart dude and could've had a good life, especially with the influence given to him as a victor, but having gone through some insane trauma, he became a joke and “screw up” instead. Also I drew this part of the animatic with a bug literally being in the drink instead of under the glass like Mitski intended lol. 

As I got older I learned I’m a drinker. Sometimes a drink feels like family 

In my HC, Haymitch's descent into crippling alcoholism sort of crept up to him throughout a long span of time instead of the usual “diving head first into a sea of alcohol the moment his family dies” thing I see a lot of people portray it as. He’d try to deny he’s an addict, but as he grows older and his addiction becomes debilitating, he accepts it. He does jackshit about it tho because drinking and being drunk brings him comfort, probably a similar sense of comfort that his (you guessed it) family or community brought. The lyric could also be referring to the singer’s family being prone to addiction, and since I’ve got a HC that Haymitch’s alcoholism was hereditary (cuz why not), it also fits really well with this interpretation in mind.

As a kid, Mitski was a huge sticker collector, and the thought of her beloved stickers being abandoned and mistreated on a random floor made her feel sad. A mitski-less interpretation is the singer's heart or even the singer itself being the sticker, getting stuck in a place where they’re getting hurt. Again, both interpretations fit Haymitch. For the former, it relates to him by how he cared about his community, so watching them die every year in horrible, brutal ways made him feel a little sad to say the least. For the latter, it relates to him in the way he’s stuck being a mentor, watching kids he’s expected to look after die year after year.

Did you go and make promises you can't keep? Well, when you break them, they break you right back

This is my fav, mostly cuz this can have 3 completely different meanings if you see this song with him in mind.  1. the original meaning, aka swearing to be sober but end up relapsing, making the singer feel like dookie 2: Haymitch “promising” the loved ones of his tributes that he’ll bring them home, only for them to be consistently killed off. The responsibility of so many lives and families weighs on him, and it makes him feel hella guilty for letting so many people down. If you wanna get hella angsty, maybe D12 felt the same. They thought Haymitch could be a huge help to bring more kids back home compared to the 40 years of D12 tributes not having a mentor, but he couldn't, and it makes some people resent him, making him feel even MORE shitty!! 3: Here’s my favorite version: HIS PROMISE TO KATNISS AND PEETA!! He promised that he’d save one of them over the other, especially swearing to Katniss that he’d prioritize Peeta. In the end, he couldn't and saved Katniss instead because she’s a more popular figurehead for the rebellion. It obliterated his relationship w Katniss for a while, and I can imagine it fucked Haymitch up too that he couldn't save his precious bread boy. I can probably go for another hour defending Haymitch over this decision, but that’s another yap sesh for another time!!!

When I’m bent over wishing it was over—making a variety of vows I’ll never keep—I try to remember the wrath of the devil was also given him by God.

This lyric has 2 meanings. 1) the singer’s suffering is part of God's plan to make them more resilient and 2) God is being a dick and screwing them over so there's really no point in begging. And guess what? BOTH MEANINGS APPLY LOL I’ll start off with the latter. God in this case is the government, especially Snow, since he has a similar kind of power that God holds. Haymitch believes that all his misery is unending, unstoppable, and meaningless, so there's really no point in being optimistic. He should just lie down and wait for liver failure to take its course. THEN Katniss and Peeta come along, which flips his entire world upside down. This could connect with the optimistic interpretation. Haymitch’s 23 years as a victor were given meaning because of how integral they were to the rebellion. Maybe K&P had to show up at just the right time for their impact to be its greatest and for the rebellion to spark (timing that God would have planned), so all that waiting around and suffering was worth it. Haymitch probably doesn't know who tf God is anyway but it's still a fun thought.

In conclusion, Suzanne Collins possessed Mitski in her sleep to write a song about Haymitch and only I’ve been able to decode it because I’m obsessed with him and Mitski’s music in equally deranged levels. Y’all should listen to the song btw its great. Honestly, it took me a couple listens to warm up to it but it really is one of my favorite Mitski songs :>

Oh boy hahaha. So I'm a multicrafter kind of person. I embroider (cross stitch), sew, knit, crochet, and plenty other stuff. When I don't draw, I usually do one of those.

I've always made art since I was a little kid, I made comics, tried to join zines when I was a teen (that didn't work out but I still have the pages somewhere lol), and then my mom asked me to stop art to go into science. So I stopped drawing for 6 years, then fell into Undertale and started drawing fanart like there was no tomorrow and joined animation school for 3 years. (If you're curious you can watch my thesis film here, but be warned, all of it was done by myself so that's why the animation sucks ass lmao. I gave all my focus to rigging to land a job in this area of the industry. Which I did, thanks to this film!!!) That school burnt the living hell out of me and gave me hand injuries, so I can't draw trad anymore or even write more than two minutes without having to stop because of pain. So when I graduated in 2020, I stopped drawing almost completely. Then Käärijä happened and I'm back at it I guess??

Realistic art is my fav thing in the world, transcribing reality in 2D dimension is really my first passion in art. My dad introduced me to charcoal on paper at an early age, and I just never grew out of it I guess haha. People are my fav thing to draw. I find it so relaxing, I'm not a creative person whatsoever as in I don't like to INVENT stuff, so just transcribing shadows without thinking about it gives me peace of mind.

CHAPTER 6

"Besides the poor thing is already attached to me." (Pg. 76) - CORYO! This is him talking to Sejanus when Sejanus mentions trading tributes. This is a crazy thing to say.

I just wrote down that Sejanus' eyes fill with tears in this scene and it made me feel sad.

"It's built into us as human beings...," (Pg. 76) - Sejanus about protecting children. So it's just really blatant (it was already but this strengthens it) how different Sejanus views the world in comparison to Coryo, but like there are definitely moments Coryo's thoughts align to Sejanus' ideals? Hm.

Bread Pudding was one of Coryo's fav foods.

"your own father used to say those people only drank water because it didn't rain blood," (Pg. 77) - That's fucking wild. Ouch! Grandma'am to Coriolanus, here.

Crispus Demigloss - History Professor

"With the exception of Livia Cardew who made it clear she thought he had cheated and should be dismissed as a mentor immediately..." (Pg. 79) - Livia just has a bone to pick with Coryo, I can't believe he marries her like I get it but god, she's annoying.

Festus is in Coryo's inner circle 'since birth.'

"Always so loud, always socking people..." (Pg. 82) - this is about Arachne and I just thought it was funny.

I really loved the classroom scenes and seeing more of the other mentors/Coriolanus' peers, I think that would've been helpful in the film in terms of understanding the type of environment Coriolanus is in since he's known them all pretty much his whole life.

"He wanted to reach out and touch her face, to tell her that things were going to be all right," (Pg. 86) - Coriolanus about Lucy Gray.

Lucy Gray says she had two older siblings! She also tears up when talking and says bread pudding is also her favorite. Something I've had in my mind as I read is how genuine Lucy Gray is being, like...I feel as though she really is a bit of a mystery? I think she finds Coriolanus amusing at this point but also leans into the fact that he's the only one that can truly help her in this scenario? So she's using that to her advantage as well? Idk, someone talk to me on that hgdghd

'"Married?'" "'Why? Are you asking?...Because I think this could work.'" (Pg. 86) - GOD THIS KILLED ME, their flirting in the book is honestly so much better. Tom and Rachel have the chemistry to pull it off in the film, but some of this dialogue is way too good, I wish they kept this exchange closer to the book. Also he blushes.

Coriolanus ignores her flirting which is hilarious.

Coriolanus refers to Lucy Gray as 'my girl,' in the discussion to Gaul and the class. (Pg. 92)

"He was tougher than he looked, Sejanus Plinth," (Pg. 93) - I believe Coryo thinks this after Sejanus is basically talking back to Gaul about the inhumanity of things and here's this rare moment of Coriolanus admiring him.

"He was no common citizen -- he was a mentor!" (Pg. 95) - funny coryo, just this little bit of a role and superiority is already getting to his head.

"He gave a wink and a wave of the hand, " (pg. 95) - Coryo does this to get a little boy to come over and give food to Lucy Gray. Found it endearing and hilarious.

Mother of Pearl handled knife is what Arachne has (and is killed with?) what does mother of pearl symbolize hmmmm

CHAPTER 7

"He remembered the cameras streaming live to the Capitol audience," (Pg. 100) - this is at the moment of Arachne's death and wow. This part and Coriolanus' attempt at helping comes off so much more heartless here than compared to the film. In the film, it just feels like it's his instinct to help, but here he is actively thinking about how he's gonna be seen and how he doesn't want to be seen as weak for being terrified and staying back.

Coryo walks Clemmie home after this all :(

"That's how it was with him: The wash of blood, the whiz of bullets, the screams in the crowd all caused flashbacks to the worst moments of his childhood. Rebel boots pounding through the streets, he and the Grandma'am pinned down by gunfire, dying bodies twitching around them...his mother on the bloodstained bed...the stampedes during the food riots...the smashed faces, the moaning people...," (Pg. 101) - this entire section is crazy and really adds so much weight in the context of scene, why he handles it the way he does. Feel like it's this type of stuff that makes it so easy to connect him to Katniss. Idk, I feel like this passage is insanely important in understanding his trauma and that's been clear before this but wow.

Man he HATES Livia.

"near scalding water...," (Pg. 103) - hot shower Coryo to deal with anxiety, same!

"A painful sobbing made his chest ache, but then it passed, and he wasn't sure if it had to do with sorrow over her death or unhappiness over his own difficulties," (Pg. 103) - ouch! I think it's both reasonings, but even Coriolanus is unaware of his actual feelings.

"He felt strangely detached from the action, as if all his emotional reserve had been depleted by his brief outburst in the shower," (Pg. 105) - his handling of Arachne's death really shows how desensitized he is. He can't handle his more overwhelming feelings well.

Hippocrata Lunt - School Counselor

"In rhetoric class, she'd once attributed his inability to decipher the deeper meaning of a poem to the fact that he was too self-absorbed. The irony, coming from Livia, of all people!....Coriolanus to the rescue, Livia to the nearest exit," (Pg. 105) - funny Coryo but also this feels like a slight foreshadow as to how Coriolanus interprets Lucy Gray's songs?????

"It seemed pretty cold to scratch her name off the list like that," (Pg. 108) - am glad you have this moral view Coryo.

I really like Clemmie & Coriolanus' friendship, I wish we got more in the film. She's so nice to him :(

Also they nailed how the snakes look in the film, like that is OFF THE PAGE

"Hello there," (Pg. 110) - funny coryo

Interesting that Coryo puts his hand in first in the book! Also little to no hesitation! Huh.

CHAPTER 8

"Pus dyed bright pink, yellow, and blue dripped down her fingers," (Pg. 114) - That's cool tbh, wish they did this in the movie!

Coryo barely thinking of Clemmie right after the bite is a little funny.

I think Coriolanus learns about never lying from Dr. Gaul (like later once he's being mentored by her)

"Ghoulish section of the lab where the glass cases housed humans with animal parts grafted to their bodies," (Pg. 115) - I kinda wish this was more included in the film, there's so many grotesque things Suzanne describes that are so cruel and I wish they had the balls to include them in the film(s) because...wow.

Coryo dropped to the curb after getting out of the lab :(

"It was like the Hunger Games. Only they weren't district kids," (Pg. 116) - SUZANNEEEE THE IRONY THIS IS FUCKING INSANE, this is Coryo about how his classmates are getting hurt/dying and I just. The layers in this small statement are crazy.

Coryo pockets the hospital crackers.

He goes to the hospital for Clemmie, but I can't tell if it is out of his guilt or own kindness over Clemmie? Like it feels definitely like a mix, but he's also deeply overthinking about being blamed.

"Afraid of Dr. Gaul. Afraid of the Capitol. Afraid of everything," (Pg. 116) - see stuff like this is where you can come back to the base idea that Coriolanus is a product of his environment. He is just a kid too. I was taken aback a little over the afraid of the Capitol line. I'm coming to understand that when Coryo is experiencing more overwhelming emotions, he's somehow more...moral? At least right now. He feels the most 'normal.' I don't know there's a lot to say on this quote but this is what I have rn.

The only person he wants to talk to about what happened is Lucy Gray.

Pg. 120 is very interesting. He's with Lucy Gray, he's apologizing for the situation she's in, wishing he was like Sejanus, worrying that she's hating him. I'm conflicted, like does he mean this? I think he does because of the emotional state he's in, i'm just always questioning him fdkghdj. Lucy gray tells him not to quit, but obviously that's stemming more from her need of him to survive this, I assume?

"'You matter to me,' he insisted. The Capitol may not value her, but he did. Hadn't he just poured his heart out to her?" (Pg. 122) - Coryo has a sense of entitlement here, like what I'm gathering is he does mean those words towards her, but he's almost expecting something in return?

And with that above in this section Lucy Gray is described as seeming distant. She's not giving in to his admission? Idk, this whole part was odd!

Grades or Glory, Coryo they go hand in hand for you.

"Usually he avoided Persephone altogether, because he could never help wondering if she had known the ingredients of her wartime stew," (Pg. 123) - funny coryo

CHAPTER 9

"'Snow lands on top,' he said with so little conviction they had to laugh. It made him feel a bit more normal," (Pg. 126) - oh! Coryo and Tigris :(

He only starts to eat his food because it would please Tigris :(

Grandma'am pokes Coryo in the ribs while he practices singing for Arachne's funeral. Literally leaves bruises.

"'Tigris? I just remembered, I can't really sing.'" - (Pg. 127) - FUNNY FUCKING CORYO

"Coriolanus thought it was quite a display for Arachne, disproportionate to both her life and death, the latter of which could have been avoided if she'd refrained from being such an exhibitionist," (Pg. 128) - this really shouldn't of been funny but I did laugh.

Brandy's body on a crane is absolutely wild and again, should've been in the film! idc how dark it is, it gives such a direct message.

"He tried to imagine conducting himself under those circumstances, until he realized this was undoubtedly what Sejanus was doing, and snapped out of it," (Pg. 130) - that's crazy. Also this is the first Sejanus mention in a bit and it being this is so funny and also extremely perceptive of Coryo. He understands Sejanus through the general lens of 'empathetic, passionate but weak through that,' way.

"Maybe her gravestone could read, 'Casualty of Cheap Laughs,'" (Pg. 130) - CORYO

"Several people took the pained look on Coriolanus' face as sorrow at Arachne's death, when ironically, he felt like killing her all over again," (Pg. 131) - CORYO!!!!!!! That's actually really insane of him.

"'I hear we're having pie,'" (Pg. 131) - OH EVIL, this is Highbottom to Coriolanus, like this is after Highbottom ruined him eating pie at the reaping, WHAT THE FUCK

"Let the poeple talk. The chief mourner needed sustenance," (Pg. 131) - this is funny, but it's also really sad because he's justifying filling his plate more to himself than others.

"His usual gift for self-control was eroding," (Pg. 131) - yeah this is. Important.

"He wasn't crazy about the guy, but he didn't particularly want to see him punished,"" (Pg. 132) - this is about Sejanus and I can't help but think Coryo is really like. Always reiterated he's eh about Sejanus, he doesn't want to be like Sejanus, like it feels like he's repeating this a lot? And that's interesting. Like he's trying to convince himself of this.

"This further display of Dr. Gaul's callousness made him feel mutinous.He glanced over at Sejanus's plate," (Pg. 133) - oh my god, the immediate sentence about Sejanus after 'mutinous'????? Insane.

Coryo trying the turnstile back after he's gone through it (Pg. 135) man is so perceptive.

"Jittery mentor on a questionable field trip," (Pg. 136) - this is funny.

The ENTIRE page 138, Lucy Gray and Coryo's dialogue is just so good. Their flirting. He's so flirty! Coryo making fun of her silly expressions and Lucy Gray making fun of his vocab like.

"For a moment he laughed, forgetting where they were, how depressing the backdrop. For a moment there was just her smile, the musical cadence of her voice, and a hint of flirtation. Then the world exploded," (Pg. 138) - this is a beautiful little passage but god. The lightness in some of these convos with Lucy Gray and Coryo was missing from the movie. They got it in a few but the book really hammers in their flirtations so much better.

CHAPTER 10

"As the horrifying realization that he was burning to death overtook him...," (Pg. 141) - thought of Katniss.

Also he knew on instinct how to react to the bombs :(

Lucy Gray went back for him. the mental implications of her literally saving his life...that thing about him wanting to feel a certain love again...

"I'm not alone, he thought. I'm not in the arena. I'm safe," (Pg. 142) - Ironic a bit.

"'You missed bomb time,'" (Pg. 142) - CORYO

God the amount of deaths from the arena explosion hits so much harder here, much more gruesome in description too, ofc.

Coryo sticking up for Lysistrata when Grandma'am makes comments (Pg. 144).

"It's just the kind of story that catches fire," (Pg. 145) - HAHAHHAHA SUZANNE!!!

Vet for the tributes...yikes!

"If Clemensia died, would he disappear as well, the only witness?" (Pg. 148). Oh. Okay this feels very foreshadow-y as to what happens with Coriolanus later.

Sejanus brought him meatloaf sandwiches :(

"People were always saying he resembled his handsome father more every day, but for the first time, he could really see it," (Pg. 149) - Just jotted this down because of the father mention.

Pg. 150-151 - Coryo's thoughts bleeding from caring about Lucy Gray's state to himself and if he looked weak, that's all literally showing his mental complications through his stream of consciousness. It's a long quote, so I can post it separately but yeah. Interesting!

Sej's Ma sent casserole :(

"The truth was, he owed her everything," (Pg. 153) - I think that makes him uncomfy. Idk. But he says it multiple times that it's like...owing her.

"Chained girl, boy offering food," (Pg. 153) - This honestly made me think about Peeta giving that burnt bread to Katniss.

"He would always be in her debt," (Pg. 153) - Yeah, this is interesting, I don't know what to make of it yet. But I think he means this.

Lucy Gray says "I hope so too," in regards to Coriolanus saying he hopes he can repay her. and I just felt. hm.

"You could start by thinking I can actually win," (Pg. 153) - Lucy Gray is a lot different in this scene, she's almost impatient, to the point, not playing around and not as jokey or flirty as earlier. It's difficult to analyze her character through the eyes of Coriolanus but my perception at this point is that Coriolanus amuses her, and she's maybe intrigued by him, but of course she's more thinking about the games. And how he could help. He's an advantage. He's proved that without even trying.
