"Y/N!"
"Yes Sir?" You asked, lifting up your gaze from the fascinating dead creature laying on your examination table. Your eyes met your superior's as he tilted his head towards the hallway, demanding you to follow him.
You sighed, not wanting to quit the dead monster, thinking of the amazing discoveries you could still make.
"Take over." You said to the little man assisting you. He nodded, watching you leave with your superior.
You walked behind him in silence for a while, until you realized he was bringing you to the medical bay.
"Is someone hurt?" You asked, curiously. "I'm not really a doctor."
"It's too late for him," He shrugged nonchalantly at the death of a man.
As you approached the door, your heart winced as you heard a deep couching burst. That sounded bad..
"So what am I supposed to with him?"
"Examine, that's your job." He said, slamming some files on your chest.
"On dead bodies!" You exclaimed as you grabbed the papers.
"He's barely alive anymore."
Your superior left you there, in front of the door, unsure of what to do next. You looked into the tiny window of the door and what you saw made your little heart shatter.
All you could see was a man, sitting on a hospital bed. If it wasn't for the wall behind him, you knew he would be laying down. A minute couldn't pass with him having a couching tantrum. His skin was sweaty and his whole body seemed shaky. But it if wasn't for all that and the impressive bags under his eyes, you would probably think he was the most handsome man you've laid eyes on.
You felt terribly sorry for the man, he looked in so much pain. One of his hands holding his stomach, the other one hiding his frowning mouth. And his eyes closed with all his might.
With a deep sigh, you picked up a mask beside the door and put it on before pushing the door open. As you slipped into the room, the man barely notice, stuck in another set of coughs.
He calmed down as you reached a chair in a corner of the room. You slowly brought it close to the bed and sat on it. You looked at the files for a while, flipping the papers and reading some of them, until you realized the couching had stopped. You quickly lifted your head, eyes widening as your gaze met the hazel eyes of the man in front of you. He was staring at you, his eyes filled with distrust, anger, and pain.
''H-Hi, I'm so sorry I should've said something! I'm used to working with a dead corpse...'' You muttered, looking away as you felt a blush blooming across your face.
''And I'm used to making those corpses, not being one.'' The man answered with a beautiful southern drawl that made your heart throb.
You glare back at him, knowing it was meant as a joke, but none of you were laughing.
''I'll do all I can so you don't get to that point...''
''Your friends aren't saying the same.'' He pointed.
''Well, they're not my friends.''
You missed his curious look as you went back into looking at the papers. You grabbed a pen in one of your pockets, ready to take some notes.
''I have to ask you a few questions I think.'' You told him.
''You think?'' He asked, a smirk growing on his lips.
You blushed even more at the view, loving the way his smirk made some light dimples appear on his handsome face. It made you forget abour your embarrassement for a moment. Sadly the view didn't last long, a burst of cough taking a toll on him once more.
You couldn't help but winced, seeing the man in pain. Working with corpses was a decision you made a while back when you realized you had a little too much empathy to work with living patient. You couldn't help but feel his pain through your whole body. As you waited for him to calm down and go on with your questions, you observed him closer. He had a nice build, after years in the army you weren't really surprised. Looking closely, you could clealy see his skin being a little too translucide and grey for it to be natural. His veins were too apparent in places they shouldn't be.
''To be honest,'' You started, leaving your observation as it hurted you too much to look at. ''They kinda threw me in there without any notice. As I said, I work with corpses, not breathing people.''
''That's exactly why they chose you.''
Your heart sank, understanding what he meant. You watched him as he laid back against the wall, his intense glare never leaving you. He thought he was a dead man, they all did. And you couldn't say you didn't think it as well after observing him from up close, but you couldn't help wanting to save him. For some reason, you didn't want this man to die. But being unable to know if you could even help him yet, you decided to stay quiet.
''Umm... Jason Kolchek?'' You read on the files.
He nodded.
''Nice to meet you.'' You said, giving him a gentle smile.
He hummed.
''You're a first Lieutenant?'' You asked surprised.
''What's to it?''
He raised his eyebrows at you, seeming already annoyed by the questionnaire to come and clearly taking your surprised look the wrong way. You felt the heat redden your face.
''N-nothing, it's just impressive. It says you've been in the Marines for only two years.''
Jason scoffed.
''I worked my ass off.''
You smiled at him, seeing how pride seemed to make him straighten. You let your eyes wander on him, taking sight of his luscious brown locks, softly falling down on his forehead. He had mesmerizing hazelnut iris, glittering with intelligence and wit. Your eyes follow the straight line of his nose, falling down to his pink lips. You stopped yourself when you realized you had been bitting your lips, heart racing as you took in the features of this handsome Marine.
Handsome dying patient, you reminded yourself.
As you looked back at his eyes, you realized he was avoiding your gaze. His eyes were watering, his lips smacked together and his face reddening. Worry filled your body until you realized what he was doing. You sighed, rolling your eyes. But you couldn't help a small smile to grow on your face.
''Stop holding it in, no need to impress me.'' You told him.
Jason instantly exploded into yet another loud couching tantrum. Holding his stomach from the pain it gave him.
''Don't do that anymore, it will only make it more painful.''
After he was done coughing, Jason cleared his throat and looked back at you, a sly smirk on his lips.
''I saw you staring, I had to look good.''
Your eyes widened, mouth opening as you searched for words. But the embarrassment you felt was too strong for you to find anything to say. You let a heavy blush heat your face as Jason exploded with laughter, quickly followed by a well-deserved cough.
''I was only examining my patient!'' You lied, a pout forming on your lips.
''Yeah right.''
You smiled at the man and felt warmth building up your body as he reciprocated. You felt strangely comfortable around him, even though he was basically a stranger. But you felt like you already knew him more than anyone else in this scientific camp. And you couldn't help but want to get closer to him.
The hours flew by as the two of you mostly talked about life outside the army. You learned Jason always wanted a dog but never had the chance to get the chance to adopt one since his family was poor growing up. Also that he never had coffee, he was too scared it would give him so much energy that he would go crazy and get addicted.
For hours, you laughed together about random silly things, enjoying light conversations. Something that was impossible to have in here.
It didn't stop you from taking notes about his state at the same time. Like how you noticed his coughing seemed more painful than a normal one. Or how his skin seemed to get paler with every passing hour. Or how he would try to hide subtly hide his hand from you after coughing some blood in it, and you tried not to look, letting him think you hadn't noticed. But you did, and every single time your heart would break a little more.
You jumped when your watch started beeping, alerting you that your shift was over. You had been so invested in your conversation with Jason, you never saw the hours pass. You smile at the man as you got up.
'''Shift is over, I should let you rest.''
Jason looked at you with a sad smile and nodded. You bit your lips, feeling the strong need of staying with him. Jason suddenly coughed again and you sighed, he really did need to rest.
''I'll come back tomorrow. Rest well.'' You smile at him and walked to the door.
As you were about to leave the room, you heard Jason call out to you. Your heart skipped a beat as you turned to look back at him, fighting the hope that he would ask you to stay.
''You never told me your name,'' Jason asked, curiosity filling his eyes, mixed with another feeling you couldn't recognize.
You laughed when you realized he was right.
''It's Y/N.'' You told him. '' Y/L/N.''
Your smile grew wider when you saw Jason mutter your name, trying to get the feel of it on his lips.
''I like it.'' He softly said.
You expected your heart to throb, to start racing with excitement as he complimented your name. But all you felt was hurt, a deep pain twisting your bowels as worry and determination rushed through your body.
Jason can't die, you won't let him. Whatever it takes, you'll find a way to help him.
''Good night Lieutenant.'' You quietly said as you stepped out of the room.
- - - - -
Mornings were always hard and a good dose of coffee was needed for you to function correctly.
You stepped into the cantine, trying to avoid people as much as possible. You weren't a morning person, and really not in the mood to talk. Or at least that's what you told yourself as an excuse instead of accepting you hated everyone here and had no friends. Not that you weren't a social person, quite the contrary. Back at home, you loved hanging out with some of your colleagues and you were one of the lucky ones who had kept in contact with some good friends from school. Here, the people were all scientists thinking of the Marines as test subjects instead of humans, it disgusted you. At least, you were only supposed to stay here only for a few months, and until you were back in your comfy home, you'll gladly stick to your music as a sole company. Well, that was before yesterday. Before you met the only man who had ever looked at you as a person instead of a freak because of your job. The only man that ever made your heart jump with a single smile. You weren't one to get easily infatuated, but you could feel a crush growing for the Marine. Dying Marine...
You shook your head, trying to disappear those unwelcome thoughts. You'll find a way to help him. You grabbed onto your mug when the machine finished filling it and as you walked by some food stands, you stopped. Your eyes fell on some tasty-looking pastries that your stomach growled for. Listening to your needs, you grabbed one for yourself and another for Jason. He'd probably be happy to get real food instead of the poor-looking meals they had been giving him. Your stomach was filled with butterflies thinking of how happy you'll probably make him.
''...ines is a dead man, I feel bad for him.''
As you were walking to the exit, you couldn't help but overhear a conversation between two guards sitting at a table. You stopped, your heart racing when you understood who they were talking about.
''I thought they found a way to help him.''
''Apparently, they did, but I overheard the chief scientist talking.'' The soldier leaned forward, whispering to his friend. ''They want to see if he's gonna turn, they're gonna let him die.''
''Damn, I feel bad for him.''
The conversation went on, but you had already stormed out of the room, rushing to your superior's office.
Blood rushed through your face, your heart beating in your ears as you reached his door. You were angry, but more than that, you were suffocating. Overwhelmed with knowing they could help him, Jason could be saved but they wouldn't do it. Those bastards were gonna let a man die, a good man that served his country countless ways for two whole years. But that meant nothing to them.
You couldn't let that happen.
A strange determination flooded your body as you calmed down. You put on your sweet assistant face and knocked on the door. It didn't take long for you to get invited in.
You slowly opened the door and peeked your head.
''Am I interrupting?''
Your superior barely muttered a no as you stepped in the room, he only acknowledge your presence and lifted his head to look at you when you put your coffee and pastries on his desk.
''I thought you could use a small break.''
At this point, you didn't need your morning coffee anymore, you were wide awake and ready to fake being a kiss-ass. The older man didn't bother to say any thanks and feasted on the pastries, sipping on the coffee in between bites.
''Any updates on First Lieutenant Kolchek's illness?'' You asked in such an innocent tone.
The man chuckled, and you had to force the smile to stay on your face as you watched him with disgust.
''He ain't ill, darling. He's turning. Or at least I hope so otherwise all of that would be a waste.''
''A waste?'' You couldn't help but ask.
''Oh yeah,'' He took another sip, reading something on the files in front of him. He seemed quite uninterested in you, which was working to your advantage. ''Some Scientist in division C made some kind of vaccine...''
The man was talking slowly, spilling out a few words before reading a little more. It made your blood boil having to wait for him like that, but you needed to keep your composure, you needed to keep him talking.
''Why work on a vaccine if we won't use it?''
Your superior lifted his eyes from his files for a second to smirk at you. He was proud of himself and happy to gloat.
''We'll see what the infection does to him, hopefully, turns him into one of those creatures. Then, we can use the vaccine on him, see if he turns back... Or dies.''
You forced your smile to widen as you felt your heart-shattering.
''This genius idea must've been yours!''
''Yes.'' He smiled, taking a sip of coffee and leaning back on his chair. The man was glowing. ''Yes, it was.''
''I won't keep you longer,'' You said while getting up. ''Enjoy the pastries, I have a patient to examine.''
Your superior waved at you, his attention already back on his files. You quickly rushed out of the room. You closed the door and pressed your back against it. Closing your eyes, you took a moment to catch a breath you didn't know you had been keeping, and fought back your tears.
Monster...
You let out a sigh. Your hand grabbing your painful chest. It was weird to say, but after just one day of talking, you felt incredibly close to Jason, but not only that. Everything your superior had just said went against your morals. You felt so close to puke.
- - - - -
It took you a while to calm down, but you managed not to break into tears as you walked to Jason's room. Or cell, you should say.
When you opened the door, Jason instantly straightened up on his bed. His sweet smirk on his lips. He seemed really happy to see you, it would've warmed your heart if you weren't so focused. It didn't take the Marine long to realize something was wrong. His smile faltered.
''What's wrong, love?''
A pet name? You probably would've melted in any other situation.
''How would you steal an important vaccine probably guarded in a scientific facility where you work?''
Jason's eyes widened at your question. His mouth opened in surprise. He was clearly out of words, but worry soon knitted his eyebrows together. You lifted your hand to stop him before he spoke.
''Hypothetically.''

Hey this is in no way meant to be rude or challenging so I hope I won't come off that way:
Could you (and anyone else who feels like responding to the post) please explain what's so bad abour season 2? Because it generally comes off to me as people just not liking Michael and Maria together, and I'm really hoping there's more to it than that. Again I'm genuinely just curious and would like a more detailed explanation, if possible🙏
This isn’t rude at all. That’s why I feel a little bad telling you that there’s no way I can relive the horrors of that season, and the last few episodes of season 1, without crying and losing hours or even another few days of my life over it.
I could suggest you look through my anti miluca tag. To put it in simpler terms, it all stems from crap writing and “strong female characters” that are apparently are only strong because they do whatever they want no matter who it hurts and never face repercussions.
I’m sorry because you’re being so polite about it, and I wish I could be of more help, but you have no idea the kind of mental strain They-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named put on me, and I can’t, I can’t, relive it.
If anyone else wants to give this anon their own explanation or thoughts, please just limit it to responding/reblogging to this post. I don’t want to go into a discussion about this in my inbox again or anything. I just don’t have the strength anymore.
